00:00:24Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and Troy Aikman are an offensive force found on no other team
00:00:29than football.
00:00:30He has been the Cowboys quarterback for the past seven years.
00:00:33Troy Aikman has taken them to two Super Bowl titles, and now this season he is the NFL's
00:00:37leading passer.
00:00:38The Cowboys have won seven of their first eight games, and Aikman is having his best
00:00:43year ever.
00:00:45Michael Irvin has, for the past five seasons, been one of the NFL's most prolific receivers.
00:00:49With 58 receptions this year, he reached the midway point of 1995 as the NFL's leading
00:00:56pass receiver.
00:00:57Strong, fast, fearless, and confident, he is the NFL's prototype wide receiver.
00:01:03No man has gained more yardage carrying the football in the past five years than Emmitt
00:01:06Smith.
00:01:07He has won the league's rushing title in three of the past four seasons, and this year he
00:01:11leads the league with a rushing total that could approach the magical 2,000 yards by
00:01:16season's end.
00:01:17The Pro Football Hall of Fame awaits Emmitt Smith.
00:01:20Coaching these three stars and the rest of the Dallas Cowboys is a job to be savored,

00:01:33outstanding players.
00:01:34I wouldn't want to coach any other players in those positions than those three players.
00:01:39They're exceptional, great leaders, great competitors.

00:01:46Three league-leading performers, but their sights are on the Cowboys' team goal, a return
00:01:51to Super Bowl glory.

00:02:13Well, it's Monday night and we're ready to rock.
00:02:16Time to get all the hits, the bangs, and the blocks.
00:02:19It's the game of the week that's coming your way.

00:02:28The Eagles and the Cowboys are coming on tonight.

00:02:42On Monday Night Football, we got Frank and Al and Dan.
00:02:48They're going to get it tick-started.
00:02:52Yeah, and the crew's all set.
00:02:54The crowd is psyched, because all my rowdy friends are back for Monday night.
00:03:04The skyline of Dallas, Texas, and Texas Stadium northwest of Dallas by about eight miles.
00:03:10A capacity crowd tonight, always here lately at Texas Stadium, 60,000 plus.
00:03:15Good, and it's the East matchup.
00:03:17The Dallas Cowboys taking on the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.
00:03:22Hello again, everyone.
00:03:23Frank Gifford with Al Michaels and Dan Dierdorf, happier with us.
00:03:25Good matchup tonight.
00:03:26Dallas coming in tonight, 7-1, Philadelphia 5-3.
00:03:29And Dallas, maybe the best football team ever put together here in Dallas by the Dallas Cowboys.
00:03:34They are on a big-time roll.
00:03:36They have great talent.
00:03:37They are a healthy football team.
00:03:38All the distractions off the field doesn't seem to bother them on the field at all.
00:03:42I mean lawsuits, suspensions, none of it seems to affect them.
00:03:45Meanwhile, Philadelphia on a pretty good roll.
00:03:47They won their last four games under rookie head coach Ray Rhodes.
00:03:51And as they come into tonight's game now, they don't have the roll call of great names,
00:03:54but they are playing some pretty tough football, particularly defensively.
00:03:57And they've done it with an entirely new cast of characters in essence, Frank.
00:04:0132 of the 53 Eagles on the roster were not here last year.
00:04:05Ray Rhodes in his first year, and his entire coaching staff, brand new to Philadelphia.
00:04:10This is a team that began the season 1-3, but after the loss to Oakland when they blew a 17-0 lead,
00:04:16Rodney Peay became the starting quarterback, and he has guided them to four straight wins.
00:04:21They don't expect Rodney to win the game, just keep them in the game.
00:04:25So how do they have a chance against a clearly superior Dallas team?
00:04:29Number one, they are number two in the National Football League defensively in yards per game allowed.
00:04:35So tonight they need a superior effort on that side of the ball,
00:04:38and a few turnovers created wouldn't hurt either.
00:04:40Secondly, their rushing game has been very good.
00:04:42They are second in the league in rushing.
00:04:44Ricky Waters and Charlie Gardner spearhead that attack,
00:04:47and tonight they'll work against a very depleted Dallas defensive line.
00:04:51And Dan, that's about the only part of the Cowboys that is depleted,
00:04:54because everybody I know expects this team to get to and win the Super Bowl.
00:04:58Including their owner Jerry Jones, Al, who said anything less than that is not only a disappointment,
00:05:02it's just downright unacceptable.
00:05:04This is a superior football team, any way you look at it.
00:05:07In our opening, we documented the triplets.
00:05:09Aikman, Irvin, but really the guy who killed the Super Bowl.
00:05:13Really the guy who kills the Eagles is running back Emmitt Smith,
00:05:16who's averaged nearly 154 yards per game the last five times that they have played the Philadelphia Eagles.
00:05:24Now they have a very good athletic and rangy defense.
00:05:27We all know about Charles Haley and these people.
00:05:29But the best part of the Dallas Cowboys is their offensive line.
00:05:33If you appreciate the game of football,
00:05:35if you appreciate what it takes to be physical and to be tough and to move people around,
00:05:39watch this Cowboys offensive line.
00:05:42They are sensational.
00:05:44Somehow this team is able to maintain focus and strength
00:05:47with everything going on around them.
00:05:49Tonight I think we'll see another good example of just that.
00:05:54Each team beginning the second half of its season.
00:05:58An overhead shot of Texas Stadium and Irving with a hole in the roof.
00:06:02Capacity a little in excess of 60,000.
00:06:06And sold out, as has been the case now for a number of years,
00:06:10Gary Anderson, the longtime Steeler.
00:06:13Spent 13 years with the Steelers, now an Eagle.
00:06:17Kevin Williams and Brock Marion are back to receive the kick for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:06:23And here we go from Irving, Texas.
00:06:26Good, deep, angled kick that is down in the end zone.
00:06:32And the Cowboys will come out to the 20-yard line.
00:06:36Well, Smith and Irving are having great years
00:06:39and so you lose sight of the fact that Troy Aikman just keeps rolling along.
00:06:43But look at that touchdown-interception ratio.
00:06:46He has been picked off only twice in half a season.
00:06:50Smith and Johnston in the backfield.
00:06:52Irving and Williams are the wideouts.
00:06:54And Novacek, another great year at tight end.
00:06:56Up front, they're huge.
00:06:582 and A, Newton, Donaldson, Allen and Eric Williams.
00:07:02Donaldson replacing the longtime center, Mark Stepnowski,
00:07:07who opted for free agency and plays now with Houston.
00:07:10And they begin on an ender round with Kevin Williams.
00:07:14And he loses the football and is lucky that it bounced out of bounds
00:07:18as the Eagles read the play perfectly, stopped him for no gain
00:07:22and almost came up with a fumble recovery.
00:07:24Fuller and Zordich in on the stop.
00:07:26Now defensively for the Eagles, Fuller, Andy Harmon just signed a new contract.
00:07:31He's had a brilliant season.
00:07:33Ronnie Dixon and Mike Pamula was their number one pick out of Boston College.
00:07:36Romanowski is the X-49er.
00:07:38Gouveia, the ex-redskin.
00:07:40And William Thomas having a good year.
00:07:42McMillan is only 5'7". Taylor's a rookie.
00:07:44Zordich and Jackson are the safeties.
00:07:47And they will have their hands full tonight with Michael Irving.
00:07:50Credit William Fuller, guys.
00:07:52That last time around, he's the guy that strung out that reverse and killed it.
00:07:55Here's Emmitt Smith looking for room and finds very little
00:07:59and takes it up to the 22-yard line.

00:08:28It appeared as if one official came in and pointed to the ground
00:08:31as if to indicate the ground caused the fumble.
00:08:33Next thing you know, Mark McMillan, the cornerback, recovers it.
00:08:38William Thomas, he forces a lot of turnovers.
00:08:41He had the hand in there.
00:08:44Very close.
00:08:46The ball was loose, but it looked like the knee might have been down.
00:08:50So the Cowboys fumble on their first two plays.
00:08:53And here is Ricky Waters over the right side taking it to the 19-yard line.
00:08:58So can the Eagles, getting a huge early break,
00:09:01capitalize at the beginning of the game as Waters picks up three?

00:09:08Another look at the fumble.
00:09:10At first, it looks like Emmitt Smith goes down.
00:09:13You would think he's down, but I think, look at him here.
00:09:16His knee does not touch the ground.
00:09:19And that ball, microscopically, looked like it came loose
00:09:23before his knee touched the ground.
00:09:25But boy, that's really, really close.
00:09:29It may have been Romanowski who got his hand in,
00:09:32and then it simply dropped as Rob Carpenter
00:09:35had it right at the numbers and couldn't hold on.
00:09:38It will be third down and six.

00:09:45As we go back to Emmitt Smith, he's handled the ball so many times,
00:09:49and that is all in traffic.

00:09:53He is not a fumbler by any stretch of the imagination.
00:09:57Fred Barnett has a full muscle, will not be in action tonight.

00:10:22and just joined the team at outside linebacker last week,
00:10:26seeing his first action of 1995 covering.
00:10:28And he made a superb play on that,
00:10:31forcing the receiver to stay to the outside.
00:10:34It would have had to have been a perfect throw.

00:55:41750 million dollar anti-trust suit against the NFL, NFL Trust and NFL
00:55:47Properties. A countersuit to the original suit filed by the NFL against him.
00:55:51Smith picks up too. The NFL you'll recall filed a 300 million dollar suit and there
00:55:56is Jerry up in his box as the owner and general manager of the team. He was sued
00:56:02by the league for 300 million. He has filed suit against the league and the
00:56:06individual owners. The papers will be served to the owners tomorrow. What I
00:56:11think is very fascinating though is he sues every team except the Oakland
00:56:15Raiders and Al Davis individually. They are excluded from the suit.

00:56:26Smith picks up three but it's amazing how this team despite every distraction
00:56:32imaginable just keeps rolling on the field. Aren't you a little disappointed he

00:56:43hate to see is that the NFL is a partnership. This is a partnership and
00:56:47you hate to see partners have to settle their differences through the courts.
00:56:53It would really be preferable to see Jerry Jones, Al Davis and the other 28
00:56:58owners go behind closed doors and settle their business that way. I think
00:57:02everybody would prefer that.
