00:00:00The wads of A's and we are underway, it goes over Kevin William's head, out of the back of the end zone, touchdown, and Troy Aikman and the Dallas Cowboys will come on offense for the first time.
00:00:11Aikman, as Pat said, yet to be shot. Three touchdowns, one interception and wins over the New York Giants on a Monday night and then last week against Denver back at Texas Stadium.
00:00:22And he will run behind a huge offensive line.
00:00:25And Vern, I think early in the game that this is an important defensive series for the Minnesota Vikings.
00:00:31Jack Del Rio said to us yesterday, my dream, my vision of this game was to have a three and out. This is an important early defensive series.
00:00:42Watch Esther Attua, 98, at the no tackle spot defensively. Here's the handoff, it's hit behind the line.
00:00:50Andrew Smith loses right edge and McDaniel leads the defensive charge.
00:00:54Just the kind of start you want.
00:00:57Yeah, the Vikings must make this a fourth quarter game. And the way you do that, you stay in it against the Cowboys in the first quarter.
00:01:06Number 58 is Ed McDaniel. He is the backside linebacker. He should make a lot of tackles.
00:01:11Just going to blow right through Daryl Johnson. And that's the start, the defense won.
00:01:17To give you an idea of how difficult the pass facing Minnesota is, the Cowboys have had the ball 21 times this year.
00:01:23Only once have they been held with three downs and a punt.
00:01:298-12. Got him. First sack of the season. Roy Barker.
00:01:41Yeah, they're still trying to fight for that three and out, believe me.
00:01:55But you spend so much time worrying about John Randall, there's some other guys that can put some pressure on the quarterback as well.
00:02:01Number 92, Roy Barker, has had a big start to the season in rushing the pass through and stopping the run.
00:02:11Three wide receivers. Third and 20. Aikman lobs it to Andrew Smith.
00:02:19Harlan Barnett gets him. Three and out for Minnesota.
00:02:26You know, Vern, that's good defense. The Cowboys coming into this game only had five negative plays in their first two games.
00:02:33And they had two in that series. So Tony Dungy's defense set the exact tone they wanted to get done early in this game.
00:02:42John Jett is on the punt. There's Tony Dungy.
00:02:48Defensive coordinator extraordinaire, at least for the moment.
00:02:56That's a shank you very much.
00:03:00It's just a cowboy roll, however. It does go out of bounds near the 48-yard line.
00:03:07So for John Jett, a poor punt, but a little bit of a break at the end of it. 37 yards, including about 15 on the roll.
00:03:1538-year-old Warren Moon. Two touchdowns, one interception. Going with more high-percentage passes this year.
00:03:23They want to cut down on the interceptions, but he said to us yesterday, Vern, that we have to play a perfect game to beat these Cowboys.
00:03:32Which begins and ends with no turnovers. First and 10.
00:03:41Robert Smith, the long setback. Here's the long pass to Jake Reed. It's behind him.
00:03:47Arguing for offensive pass interference. It'll go for an incomplete pass.
00:03:54Jake Reed had 85 catches last year. Robert Smith, with 111 yards, last week surpassed his season total for 1994.
00:04:03And up front, Todd Stusie and Corey Stringer. A second-year tackle and a rookie tackle.
00:04:09They're going to be tested heavily tonight. With Haley and Talbert coming at them.
00:04:15Second and 10.
00:04:19Charles Evans stays in the backfield. He's the lead blocker for Robert Smith, who squeezes yardage of the right tackle.
00:04:26Corey Stringer moves the pile, and they cross the 50 to the 47-yard line.
00:04:31Defensively for the Cowboys, familiar names now. Talbert and Haley at the defensive ends. Maryland and Leon lead at the tackles.
00:04:39Robert Jones, a resuscitated career at the middle linebacker spot.
00:04:43Aaron Smith, a holdout. And Godfrey Miles is occupying his spot.
00:04:47And this may be the weak part of the Cowboys' defensive unit, if there is one.
00:04:57Third down. Shotgun. Tied off Ampley. First down, Minnesota at the Cowboy 41.
00:05:03What a lead block by Randall McDaniel. I mean, you know, the defense did their job. They forced a three and out the punt.
00:05:10They got good field position. And then that first third down, it's kind of a change-up play.
00:05:16It's a passing down. Number 64 is Randall McDaniel. What can lead the play here?
00:05:22Ampley is more of a receiver than a runner. McDaniel dominates his guy.
00:05:27Ampley follows that block, and they pick up a first down. So kind of a change-up call on third and five.
00:05:33First and ten, McDaniel back in his spot. Now they're going to reset the game clock. Or the play clock, rather.
00:05:42Our referee tonight, by the way, is Ed Hockley.
00:05:48From the 42, first and ten, one time and seven. That's Chris Carter.
00:05:54Heading in motion, top of the screen. Robert Smith, he's bounced backwards as he crosses the 40 to the 38.
00:06:01Leon Lett got him. He got stunned. He was stunned. And Woodson got him, too.
00:06:06And Robert Smith is hurt.
00:06:09The one thing about Robert Smith, we've said there are not too many running backs like him.
00:06:14He is tall, he is angular, and he is a big target at 6'1".
00:06:19Most of the good running backs you see now, Berner, that 5'8", 5'9", 5'10", 200 pounds,
00:06:24he goes 6'1", although he looks taller than that, and he presents quite a target.
00:06:31Denny Green went way back in NFL history. To compare him to a running back, Lenny Moore,
00:06:36the outstanding running back of the Colts in the 50s.
00:06:39What about this Dallas defense? They have a lot of guys that can make up some ground quick.
00:06:44Oh, boy, and that is Darren Woodson, the strong saver.
00:06:47And that is the helmet in the stomach.
00:06:54Ouch.
00:06:55That's going to be ribs. And that's going to hurt. Time has been called.
00:07:03Robert Smith resting himself and his ribs on the sideline.
00:07:06No official medical report, but Scotty Graham has taken his place.
00:07:10It's good to see a bit of a smile for Robert Smith. And there's Darren Woodson.
00:07:14Darren Woodson has been a force. He's noted now for all the big plays he made a year ago,
00:07:18but he makes a lot of the little plays, like that one.
00:07:21Stuffing a hole when you had a big gain on your hands.
00:07:24Scotty Graham is in the backfield now. He started the season in a tailback.
00:07:28Robert Smith with a contract holdout in preseason.
00:07:32Here's a fake reverse that Scotty Graham has done as he gets down to the 37-yard line.
00:07:37That will bring up a third and a fat four or five.
00:07:41And it will bring in the nickel defense of the Dallas Cowboys.
00:07:45It would be a great lift for the Vikings if they could score first.
00:07:49Now, you know, we're still very early in this ballgame, but the thing about Dallas,
00:07:52they're the best front-running team, I think, in the NFL.
00:07:55And you play it at home, you'd love to get that first score,
00:07:58but to be able to do so, you have to convert this third down.
00:08:02The Cowboys are going to go with four down runners and seven defensive backs.
00:08:07Greg Trimble has come in. Bill Bates, the 13-year back in the middle.
00:08:15The kind of mistake Warren Moon said they could not have.
00:08:18And the snap was catchable. It was a little off.
00:08:21It was a little off to his left, but it was catchable.
00:08:24Should have been caught.
00:08:27Very good. Looks like he actually started backing up before the ball got there.
00:08:31And kind of short-armed on it.
00:08:34Second in history.
00:08:36Dave Craig leads that distinguished group with 132.
00:08:41My buddy Dan Fouts retired at 106, and he's going to love me bringing his name into that conversation.
00:08:48Nice high punt.
00:08:52And it's going to be down at the 1.
00:08:56Whoa, Mike Saxon, the former Cowboy, leads the league and puts down inside the 20.
00:09:02And fifth one.
00:09:04You catch it, Vern. This thing was up there.
00:09:09And again, they had a good defensive play and a good special teams play.
00:09:14I mean, so the defense did their job, the special teams have done their job,
00:09:18and now the Cowboy offense for the second time has backed up.
00:09:22Cowboys at their own 1.5. No score, 10.04 to go first quarter.
00:09:27Already two negative plays from Dallas on the opening drive.
00:09:31That's Johnson and Emmitt Smith.
00:09:34Behind Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith.
00:09:38Look at him dance. Look at him go.
00:09:42Look at him get the Cowboys out of jail.
00:09:44Kind of reminded me a little bit of a 99-yard run a guy made in a Cowboy uniform a number of years ago.
00:09:52Right down from that same spot, as a matter of fact.
00:09:55Exactly. I guess his very same team.
00:09:57Tony Dorsett.
00:09:58Absolutely.
00:09:59You know, look at Emmitt Smith, and he always seems to know where he wants to go,
00:10:04and he doesn't waste any steps getting there.
00:10:08He doesn't see people, he feels them, and makes them miss.
00:10:11Game of 14 for Smith. Novacek starts in motion.
00:10:15First and 10, Dallas. They hand it to Smith again.
00:10:18He gets a little bit of a thrust back from Michael Irvin,
00:10:21and is knocked out of bounds by Charles, missing number 21.
00:10:25There is a flag down on the far sideline.
00:10:33Again, the referee tonight is Ed Hockley.
00:10:36Hockley.
00:10:41Here's Charles Mincy, grabs a little face mask.
00:10:45And the official's right there.
00:10:47That seems to be the junior variety, the adolescent ball.
00:10:50Yes.
00:10:51Not the adult.
00:10:53Personal foul. Face mask by the defense.
00:10:55Number 21, 15-yard penalty for 15.
00:10:58Boy, I thought it was a junior variety.
00:11:00Yeah. That was a 13-year-old. That wasn't a 21-year-old.
00:11:03That thing couldn't vote.
00:11:05Dallas backs and receivers, Kevin Williams, Michael Irvin,
00:11:08Novacek, Emmitt Smith, and Johnston.
00:11:10And look at the size of this offensive line.
00:11:13And they have just dominated the first two games.
00:11:18And the Cowboys have moved out of trouble now.
00:11:21They're at their own 25, first and 10.
00:11:26Johnston comes wide right, Aikman will throw.
00:11:29Deep left side, Michael Irvin is short and in front of him.
00:11:35Defensively from Minnesota,
00:11:37a unit that held Barry Sanders to 35 yards last week.
00:11:41Barker, James Harris, Tuaolo, and John Randall,
00:11:4412 and a half sacks last year.
00:11:46Thomas, Del Rio, and Ed McDaniel, the linebackers.
00:11:50And Barry Switzer feels if they can protect Troy Aikman,
00:11:53this secondary is vulnerable.
00:11:55Yeah, they think they can work on four,
00:11:58and they think they can work on both of those safeties.
00:12:00Donald Frank was a starter last week.
00:12:02Troy Fuller is a rookie getting his first part in left corner.
00:12:06Smith.
00:12:09At the 36.
00:12:198.45 to go first quarter.
00:12:22Troy Aikman, I think he can beat you with fewer passes
00:12:27than any quarterback in the league.
00:12:29He's not a stat guy.
00:12:31He's not going to throw for 35 touchdowns
00:12:33or have a lot of 300-yard games.
00:12:35Not a fantasy football guy.
00:12:36He is not.
00:12:37But he will slice you, and he will dice you,
00:12:39and he will beat you with a few passes.
00:12:43Yeah, Vegematic.
00:12:44Right.
00:12:45Third down.
00:12:46Into the flag for Smith.
00:12:48That's a block from Johnson.
00:12:50Oh, dandy block.
00:12:51That is going to be short of the first down.
00:12:53But Moose Johnson leveled Del Rio.
00:12:56Yeah, you know, Daryl Johnson's one of those guys
00:12:58you don't appreciate really until you watch the tapes on Monday.
00:13:02You know, he's the kind of guy that will make blocks like this.
00:13:05Good coverage here as Aikman looks downfield first.
00:13:09Then he's going to try to go to Johnson and dumps it off.
00:13:11And that's the kind of confidence he has in Emmitt Smith on third and long
00:13:15to try to give him a chance to run for him.
00:13:17But Del Rio got smoked.
00:13:19Actually, it was Robert Griffith.
00:13:20That's my mistake.
00:13:2124.
00:13:22He's the guy that got popped.
00:13:23Okay.
00:13:24And then Jack was down, and he got up having been leveled.
00:13:28The thing about Johnson, though,
00:13:29in so many subtle ways he can help your team win.
00:13:33John Jett's second punch.
00:13:35David Palmer back to return it.
00:13:37This will go over.
00:13:38Oh, he's got it at the 10.
00:13:41He's dangerous.
00:13:43Tiny All-American at Alabama had a disappointing year a year ago.
00:13:47But don't forget about him tonight.
00:13:49Earlier in preseason, he had seven punts returned against Kansas City
00:13:54for 201 yards.
00:13:56That'll keep you up at night.
00:14:00First team to die.
00:14:02Take you back.
00:14:03A young anyhow.
00:14:04And he said he's going to score.
00:14:06I thought, well, that'll go in the archives.
00:14:08You were right.
00:14:09You were right.
00:14:10Oh, dear.
00:14:11I had a few more here to say.
00:14:14In the backfield, Robert Smith is popped by Charles Haley.
00:14:20And Charles Haley is a guy that's just going to blow right by
00:14:24Todd Stussy, number 73.
00:14:26I mean, he tries.
00:14:27It's almost a Nolan Ryan no-hitter.
00:14:29I mean, he puts the hands out there, and Charles Haley gets a little ole,
00:14:34and he makes the stop.
00:14:36We chatted with Robert Smith yesterday, the young man from Ohio State,
00:14:39and talked about running right at Haley.
00:14:41He said, well, he's an exceptional pass defender.
00:14:45He's a good left defender.
00:14:48He's pretty good on that one.
00:14:54None will run.
00:14:55Whoa!
00:14:56Whoa, man!
00:14:59Cowboys have it.
00:15:00Leon left.
00:15:02That's twice now Warren has lost the ball.
00:15:05Once in the shotgun formation,
00:15:07and this just comes right out of his hand without a problem.
00:15:09And mind you, this Minnesota team is not good enough to win tonight
00:15:15by making mistakes.
00:15:16They must play an error-free game.
00:15:19And this is their first significant error of the evening.
00:15:22I mean, that's just losing the handle.
00:15:27Again, they're not a – the Vikings are an average football team.
00:15:31They're not a dominant team.
00:15:32And to stay with the Cowboys, you can't turn it over.
00:15:36Unfortunately, that's going to make its way to the football follies.
00:15:39Yep.
00:15:40For Warren, I say, unfortunately.
00:15:42It just slipped.
00:15:44And here are the Cowboys at the Minnesota 20.
00:15:47This is a situation.
00:15:48You may want Michael Irvin on a post pattern.
00:15:53There goes Michael Irvin.
00:15:55Got it.
00:15:57Touchdown, Dallas.
00:16:02I believe it was a post pattern.
00:16:04You know, they were going to –
00:16:06Michael Irvin runs that skinny little post pattern.
00:16:10I mean, he is the wide guy,
00:16:12and all they're trying to do is create a matchup with the corner in the safe.
00:16:16He's the wide guy, number 88, top of the screen.
00:16:20The inside receiver ties up the free safety.
00:16:25Michael Irvin makes a great adjustment to the ball in the air,
00:16:28and they add the touchdown.
00:16:32Michael Irvin is tied in a number of 100-yard receiving days for the Cowboys with 26.
00:16:38Last week, he came six yards short of holding the record by himself.
00:16:42He wants to get it tonight.
00:16:44Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:16:45Wow.
00:16:46Was that a bad speech?
00:16:48That was awful.
00:16:50That looked like the Kansas City-Oakland game this afternoon.
00:16:53Well, they felt if they could protect Troy Aikman,
00:16:56they could work on these corners and safeties.
00:16:59And you get Michael Irvin in the first post pattern of the evening,
00:17:02a terrific adjustment when the ball is in the air.
00:17:05He owns it.
00:17:08The Cowboys were perfect in what they call the red zone.
00:17:10That's the area inside the 28 of 8.
00:17:13Well, make it 9 of 9.
00:17:15That's perfection of the highest order.
00:17:17They are just so hard to stop.
00:17:20It's kind of like balancing the federal budget.
00:17:23It's easy to talk about but real hard to do.
00:17:25It's easier for you to talk about than some of us.
00:17:28Yeah.
00:17:30That, by the way, was Chris Ponyo's first career miss at a point after touchdown.
00:17:35The last Cowboy miss was by Lynn Elliott in 1993.
00:17:39Lynn Elliott's the guy who missed the field goal in the game this afternoon.
00:17:44Here's John Baker kicking off.
00:17:46It's taken by David Palmer, returning kickoff as well as punch tonight.
00:17:51And they like his chances doing this.
00:17:53And that's a pretty good effort.
00:17:55The Vikings get it out to the 33.
00:17:59Well, the Cowboy coaches were going to run the post to Michael Irvin
00:18:03the first time inside the 25.
00:18:04Do you think Barry Switzer liked the results?
00:18:06Well, you know, it's a nice thing when you feel like you have a game plan
00:18:09and things work.
00:18:11And that obviously did.
00:18:13And now the Vikings, you know, they had a defensive game plan.
00:18:15They wanted a three and out.
00:18:16That happened early in this game.
00:18:18The offense didn't capitalize on good field position.
00:18:20And now Warren Moon hasn't really gotten the rhythm of this thing.
00:18:24Fumbled the last time.
00:18:25And now they're battling, battling that Dallas thing that everybody seems to have this year.
00:18:31Six-nothing Dallas.
00:18:33Moon has two fumbles thus far in the game.
00:18:37One lost.
00:18:38That pass complete right side.
00:18:41Andrew Jordan, the tight end, number 89, makes the grab.
00:18:45Well, the Vikings have two tight ends.
00:18:47They do two different things.
00:18:48Andrew Jordan is the receiving tight end.
00:18:51And Adrian Cooper, number 87, he's the blocking tight end.
00:18:56Andrew Jordan got kicked out of last week's game.
00:18:58There's Cooper.
00:19:00He hit a guy from behind.
00:19:03That cost him in the pocket book as well as an injection.
00:19:07Six-nothing at the six-minute mark.
00:19:09Oh, that was his head.
00:19:11Jack Del Rio was talking about the first thing that happens when teams get behind Dallas.
00:19:20What a pop on Robert Smith.
00:19:22Boy, I tell you, these defensive backs are popping Robert Smith.
00:19:25One time it was Darren Woodson.
00:19:27That time it was Larry Brown.
00:19:29And think about these Cowboys.
00:19:31You can't run outside on these guys.
00:19:33I don't believe it.
00:19:34They are just too quick on defense.
00:19:35He pops it outside because of some inside penetration, some very quick penetration.
00:19:40I think it was Shantae Carver.
00:19:42And he forces them outside.
00:19:43But they have so much speed when Haley and those defensive backs don't have a chance.
00:19:47Charles Haley favoring his left leg, muscle pull of some sort.
00:19:53Shantae Carver is on the field.
00:19:56Let's see if Haley leaves.
00:19:58Del Rio was talking about what happens when you get behind Dallas.
00:20:01He said all of a sudden you're in awe of what they're doing.
00:20:04And trying to play catch-up against these guys is just darn near impossible.
00:20:07You know, as we watch Charles Haley, we talked about on the pregame show,
00:20:10everybody's making a big thing about signing Deion Sanders.
00:20:13But I think the fact that Charles Haley decided not to retire is as equally a large story
00:20:19as they signing Deion Sanders.
00:20:21They're a dominant defense with Charles Haley, but not without him.
00:20:25I thought we were going to go the whole night without mentioning him.
00:20:28Well, I'm sorry.
00:20:29I'm sorry.
00:20:30It was in the context of Charles Haley.
00:20:32I understand.
00:20:33So you're forgiven.
00:20:34Okay.
00:20:356'9", 2nd and 13.
00:20:39Long way.
00:20:40Robin Smith.
00:20:41Head high.
00:20:43The race is on.
00:20:48Edwards, or Woodson rather, catches up with him.
00:20:53But a nifty run of 44 yards for Robert Smith.
00:20:59Okay, the umpire gave him a good block, and Randall McDaniel, number 64,
00:21:03gives him a good block.
00:21:05The umpire kind of screens somebody.
00:21:07He makes him miss.
00:21:09Jake Reed, number 86, the wide receiver, picks up a good block.
00:21:12And when your wide receiver's block burned, 5-yard runs become 44-yard runs,
00:21:18and that's what Robert Smith had right there.
00:21:20That's good blocking all the way around.
00:21:22Ampley will get Robert Smith the rest.
00:21:24Charles Evans is in the backfield on 1st and 10.
00:21:27A 44-yard run.
00:21:29Here's a three-step setup.
00:21:31Ampley, who is excellent out of the backfield, catching passes,
00:21:35grabs that one and then is tackled by Dixon Edwards, number 58.
00:21:41Lee, who spent two years with the San Francisco 49ers,
00:21:44a career high of 45 receptions last year,
00:21:48in this pass-happy offense.
00:21:50They want to reduce the number of passes this year, Pat.
00:21:52They threw, what, nearly 600.
00:21:54Yeah, 40 a game, and one of the things they said,
00:21:57we want control passes and we don't want the turnover.
00:21:59We don't want Warren Moon throwing as many interceptions as he did a year ago.
00:22:04Robert Smith has the deep back of the eye.
00:22:09They go to the right side.
00:22:11Danny Smith is a block, but Smith turns the corner.
00:22:13A flag is down.
00:22:15Robert Smith knocked out of bounds by Clayton Holmes, who claims he was held.
00:22:20Robert Smith has extraordinary speed.
00:22:23He's not fast.
00:22:24He's extraordinarily fast.
00:22:26We talk about people sometimes taking the wrong angle on him.
00:22:29He's tall, he's angular, he's got that long stride,
00:22:32and I think he fools defenders and they really take the wrong tackling angles.
00:22:36How fast is he, you ask?
00:22:38Well, he was a member of the Ohio State 4-by-400-meter relay team
00:22:43that had the fastest time in the world in 1993.
00:22:52Poling wipes out the run.
00:22:54Again, the long, loping stride, and then again, you think you have the angle?
00:22:58I mean, it looks like Woodson thought he had the angle and then he outran him.
00:23:01I mean, that's what he does.
00:23:03He fools you with his speed.
00:23:05Poor angle there by Darren Woodson.
00:23:11We have a report from the Cowboy bench.
00:23:13Charles Haley, a strained left hamstring.
00:23:16He might not be back.
00:23:19Second down, Amp Lee in the backfield.
00:23:23A four-line receiver set this time.
00:23:25Here's Lee.
00:23:26He's off the lane.
00:23:28Lee answers right in trouble down at the 20.
00:23:33And the crowd didn't care for the play selection or the execution either.
00:23:37Yeah.
00:23:38I mean, they have to come out of this thing with at least three points.
00:23:41So, what Warren Moon can't do here is take a sack.
00:23:45And certainly can't throw the intercept.
00:23:47If it's close, throw it away.
00:23:49But remember we also said that this is where you got to have a guy like Chris Carter come up and make a play.
00:23:55Play big.
00:23:56I mean, play your size.
00:23:57Outjump somebody.
00:23:58And this is where you're about to see Chris Carter get a chance.
00:24:02Chante Carter is in it right in for the Cowboys.
00:24:04Here's Chris Carter.
00:24:06In the slot.
00:24:08Here's Moon back on third down.
00:24:10Screen pass.
00:24:11Oh, boy.
00:24:12Leon left.
00:24:15He's a force.
00:24:16Recovered a fumble.
00:24:17Stopped the screen.
00:24:19We were talking to Dave Campbell, the defensive coordinator, and said,
00:24:22when he's on, when he decides to play, you can't block him.
00:24:26He said, we just got to get him to play every down.
00:24:29Because when he plays hard, you just can't stop him.
00:24:33Carter brings on Floyd Reves to try his 31st consecutive field goal.
00:24:38Last week he hit two.
00:24:40And that set a new NFL record.
00:24:42He broke the mark to the hill by John Carney.
00:24:45Mike Sachs will hold.
00:24:46Mike Morris will snap it.
00:24:48Everything's good.
00:24:49The kick is on the way.
00:24:51Making 31 in a row for Floyd Reves.
00:24:56A 42-yard effort.
00:25:01It was last week when he set the record, and it was a 32-yard kick.
00:25:05Mike Sachs bobbled the hole.
00:25:08And it was only the fact that they'd worked together for so long
00:25:12that allowed Reves to stay back.
00:25:15Well, Mike Sachs said, actually, it wasn't Mike Morris' best snap.
00:25:21Well, the offensive line took umbrage at that.
00:25:23So, earlier this week, they grabbed Mike Sachs and they taped him.
00:25:28Taped him up in the weight room.
00:25:30Right to the weight room.
00:25:31I mean, actually, to one of the machines, one of the equipment.
00:25:33It was like 18 rolls of tape.
00:25:35It could not extricate himself from the mess.
00:25:37Mike said that wasn't as bad as what happened to former Viking kicker,
00:25:40Rich Carlos, here a couple of years ago.
00:25:42Carlos' wife said she didn't want him hanging around with offensive linemen
00:25:45because they dressed funny.
00:25:47They taped him up and strung him over the goal post
00:25:50and hooked him like a marlin and then took pictures of him.
00:25:54Hijinks are not done here in the land of the north.
00:25:59That's great.
00:26:01Oh, well.
00:26:02There's another example of too much ludifice.
00:26:05He's wondering why people don't get goose bumps on their face.
00:26:08I saw that guy at the cross country in Lillehammer.
00:26:13And, in the meantime, more serious conversations with Warren Moon
00:26:16and Chris Carter.
00:26:17Brian Pillick, offensive coordinator to the left.
00:26:22Charles Haley, strained hamstring.
00:26:26Game three game.
00:26:27Flau'd Rivets will kick off.
00:26:33Devin Williams at the two.
00:26:39Oh, man.
00:26:41Richard Brown, who is here because of his special teams play.
00:26:48He played for Gary's Donner before at San Diego State.
00:26:52You know you're a number 52.
00:26:53You know you're a good special teams player when you've been special teams
00:26:56captain of two different teams.
00:26:58Was in San Diego.
00:26:59Was in Cleveland.
00:27:00He's about to be here in Minnesota.
00:27:02This guy is a force on special teams.
00:27:06Gary's Donner is a special teams coach of the Vikings.
00:27:08Was at San Diego State.
00:27:10He recruited Richard Brown.
00:27:12He recruited Mike Saxon.
00:27:14He's got four former San Diego State players
00:27:18Special teams rules for the Vikings.
00:27:20Six-three Dallas.
00:27:22Smith.
00:27:24Buckle.
00:27:27I believe the Vikings have it.
00:27:31Tony Dundee's defense creates turnovers.
00:27:35They've done it since he's been the coordinator here in 1992.
00:27:39And, Vern, we said for Minnesota to win this game,
00:27:42they needed to create two or three turnovers.
00:27:45They just got one.
00:27:47Now, this is a guy, Emmitt Smith, who does not fumble the ball often.
00:27:50But when you play against the Vikings, you know they're going to be stripping the ball.
00:27:54It was Corey Fuller that stripped it.
00:27:57Number 27, the rookie at a Florida State.
00:28:03Now, three or four purple jerseys were there.
00:28:05But Dundee's defense, defense has turned the ball over.
00:28:09And last year, they scored seven touchdowns on defense.
00:28:15Emmitt Smith, a rare mistake.
00:28:21First fumble and 131 carries.
00:28:24Backs are split, move, Broadway.
00:28:27Robert Smith, ankle tackle behind the line of scrimmage.
00:28:32It was Charles Haley who was back out there.
00:28:34What a warrior.
00:28:35Unbelievable.
00:28:36You know, but since Tony Dundee has taken over,
00:28:39he's had 113 turnovers since 1992.
00:28:45It's unbelievable.
00:28:46It's no accident.
00:28:48Play or doubt.
00:28:50Chris Hinton, the right guard, number 78.
00:28:54That's a guy they really need in their run game, Chris Hinton.
00:29:00And Vern, for the Vikings, other than the one fumble by Warren Moon,
00:29:04this game has done exactly what they wanted to do.
00:29:07You know, the three-and-out in defense, you know, they played some pretty good offense.
00:29:10They had a good run there with Robert Smith.
00:29:12And their defense turns the ball over, gives them field position.
00:29:15I mean, so far in this ball game, this has been a well-executed one for the Vikings in particular.
00:29:2278, right in the middle of the screen.
00:29:25Ouch.
00:29:26Ow, ow, ow, ow.
00:29:29Ouch.
00:29:30That's Charles Haley who fell on it.
00:29:32I mean, Haley's going to be around the ball a lot, and there's going to be a lot of bodies flying.
00:29:38I mean, it's like trash after the game, you know, just piled up with bodies in there.
00:29:44Chris Hinton, 13th year for Northwestern, and is assisted to the sidelines.
00:29:51Everett Lindsey, who backs up almost every position on the offensive line,
00:29:55will move in to right guard now, number 61.
00:30:01One down and nine.
00:30:04Ninety seconds to go, opening quarter.
00:30:06Carter in motion to the right side.
00:30:09Quick set-up.
00:30:10Left side, caught.
00:30:11Jake Reed.
00:30:12That's short of the first down of the 17-yard line.
00:30:15There's a pit going on by these defensive backs.
00:30:17Larry Brown twice has tagged some guys.
00:30:20We saw Darren Woodson tag Robert Smith.
00:30:23You know, the Vikings felt if there was a weakness on this Dallas defense,
00:30:27they thought they could pick on the corners,
00:30:29and Larry Brown has responded, certainly in the run game
00:30:32and in the tackling game tonight.
00:30:36Robert Smith comes out.
00:30:37Amp Lee will stay in.
00:30:39It will be third and one.
00:30:43Double time to end seventh.
00:30:45Hooper comes to the left side.
00:30:49Great pass.
00:30:50Scored a game-ending play with Carter.
00:30:52Nicely conceived offensive play.
00:30:54Absolutely.
00:30:55They need a big play from Chris Carter.
00:30:57Not necessarily long plays, Vern.
00:31:00In a third and two, when you need to keep the drive alive, this is a big play.
00:31:04He's number 80.
00:31:05He's the man outside.
00:31:07It's kind of a little delay.
00:31:08Amp Lee goes to the flat.
00:31:09He gets all the attention.
00:31:11Chris Carter just gets a small little pass, a short little pass,
00:31:15and he is a strong guy after the catch.
00:31:17The play is not over when he catches it.
00:31:22Carter comes to the left side.
00:31:23Back to the eye.
00:31:24First and goal from the five.
00:31:28Robert Smith cuts it up the middle over the block of Jeff Christie.
00:31:35This is one series where Minnesota would love to punch it in.
00:31:39I mean, and we talked about, you know, always chasing Dallas.
00:31:42You get a lead here at home, the crowd gets into it,
00:31:45and I think you play 10, 15% better.
00:31:49Well, if they're going to punch it in,
00:31:50they're going to punch it in at the south end of the Metrodome.
00:31:54We've reached the end of one.
00:31:56It's 6-3 Cowboys.
00:32:01Pondering that fumble on the left is Smith, who fumbled to right is Michael Irvin.
00:32:05Which one scored the touchdown?
00:32:06Yeah, Michael may be laughing, but that's a very focused
00:32:09and disappointed Emmitt Smith.
00:32:11He saw that he didn't fumble the ball much,
00:32:13and his team right now is not, you know,
00:32:17performing like they did in their first two games
00:32:19and give the Vikings some credit.
00:32:21They've done a pretty good job, special teams and on defense.
00:32:2435-0 over the Giants in Game 1,
00:32:2631-21 last week over Denver at home.
00:32:29Right now it's 6-3,
00:32:31and the Vikings have a second and goal from the four-yard line
00:32:34trailing by that trio of points.
00:32:38Robert Smith, Charles Evans in the backfield.
00:32:41Evans, number 29, Lee Walker.
00:32:44He starts in motion.
00:32:47Room to throw.
00:32:49Into the back of Robert Smith, and boy, there was nothing out there.
00:32:56Godfrey Miles, the linebacker, number 98, was the only one out there.
00:33:00Godfrey Miles had that thing covered all over the place.
00:33:04I mean, remember, Godfrey Miles is really their fourth outside linebacker.
00:33:08Darren Smith, you mentioned they haven't been able to sign him yet, holding out.
00:33:12Godfrey Miles was the guy that played in part of that depth thing that Dallas has had.
00:33:17When we thought about Dallas winning those two championships a couple years ago,
00:33:20I think what would distinguish them was their depth.
00:33:23They're still awfully good, the best right now,
00:33:26but they don't have the depth they had a couple years ago.
00:33:29Third and goal, 6-3, Dallas.
00:33:33Got to give Chris Carter a chance.
00:33:37Touchdown!
00:33:42Jake Reed!
00:33:46Emmitt Smith!
00:33:50A couple of contrasting ends of the spectrum.
00:33:53Well, each team has had a turnover, and each team has turned it into a touchdown.
00:33:59First time Dallas has trailed this year.
00:34:03What I like with Jake Reed is his size.
00:34:06He is 6'3", and he is physical.
00:34:11And he's matched up against Clayton Holmes at 5'10".
00:34:14He gets inside position, the game is over.
00:34:16When you have that size advantage and you get inside position, it's over.
00:34:20You win. The score.
00:34:22First touchdown of the season for Jake Reed.
00:34:26The extra point by Ravese is up and good.
00:34:29Clayton Holmes, who is occupying a spot,
00:34:32filled by Kevin Smith, out with an Achilles injury.
00:34:36And this time, the battle is won by the taller guy.
00:34:42Turn the kickoff.
00:34:44The GMC truck leaders, Emmitt Smith and these are up-to-date stats
00:34:48with 300 yards now and two games in the quarter.
00:34:51Natron Means of San Diego, only three back.
00:34:53Barry Sanders at .290.
00:34:55Terry Allen at .272.
00:34:58Robert Smith at .228.
00:35:00So, Emmitt Smith will be the leader at the end of week three,
00:35:04but right now that is the farthest thing from his mind.
00:35:07He had seven carries for eight yards or more a week ago.
00:35:11The consistency, not only throughout the game,
00:35:14but week in, week out of Emmitt Smith is remarkable.
00:35:19Ravese kicks it off.
00:35:21Sanders at the nine.
00:35:25Oh, he's dangerous.
00:35:28Out to the 31-yard line.
00:35:32Richard Brown, again, and Fernando Smith collaborate on the tackle,
00:35:36and the Cowboy offense will come back on the field.
00:35:39But, you know, this is a team that you mentioned them being behind
00:35:42for the first time this year.
00:35:43Clearly, they don't panic.
00:35:44These guys have played together for a long time.
00:35:47They're stars.
00:35:48They've got, you know, Aikman and Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin
00:35:51and Novacek and Tuan A. Newton.
00:35:53They've all played at least six years together.
00:35:57And they've got a few years left.
00:35:58Absolutely.
00:35:59They're all signed to at least four more years.
00:36:02Preston Tendalis backs in the eye.
00:36:04Smith and Johnson behind Troy Aikman.
00:36:08Play action.
00:36:09Aikman wanted to go deep.
00:36:11He settles and stands short,
00:36:13and the catch is made by Emmitt Smith.
00:36:17A tackle made by Dwayne Washington.
00:36:19I want to amend that.
00:36:20They're all signed except for Emmitt Smith.
00:36:22He only has one year left.
00:36:23But they're stars.
00:36:24They're going to be around here for a long time.
00:36:26Emmitt Smith can, you know, he can hit a home run.
00:36:29You know, his first carry this year was 60 yards,
00:36:32and then he can kind of nickel and dime you.
00:36:34You know, he can just kind of stay out here and catch a little pass like this,
00:36:37make a guy miss, and you kind of bleed a slow death.
00:36:41You know, he can body punch you, and then he can knock you out.
00:36:44Number 87.
00:36:45The 5-yard penalty and automatic first down.
00:36:51Called 87.
00:36:52That's a tight end, so that's the wrong number.
00:36:58But it is against the Vikings and moves it out to the 35-yard line.
00:37:10Benny Green finds himself in a division that is going to, again,
00:37:13I think, go down to last week.
00:37:14No clear favorite in the NFC Central.
00:37:16Well, Detroit loses again this afternoon.
00:37:18Green Bay has won a couple now.
00:37:20And I was thinking about Emmitt Smith's first run of the season, 60 yards,
00:37:23against the Giants.
00:37:24They haven't recovered from that one run.
00:37:26No.
00:37:27And they're 0-3.
00:37:30And here Minnesota leads at 10-6, 13-42 to go in the first half of play.
00:37:36Michael Irvin comes near side, number 88.
00:37:43Another check in motion.
00:37:45Smith.
00:37:47Flag is down on the far side.
00:37:49Smith is down at the 40-yard line.
00:37:52Even when you think you've done a pretty good job of defensing Emmitt Smith,
00:37:55he picks up five yards.
00:37:57I mean, that wasn't bad defense.
00:38:00Good lead bought by Darrell Johnston, too.
00:38:07Offside by the defense, number 92, lined up in the neutral zone.
00:38:12That's Roy Barker, the left defensive end.
00:38:18And a sack of Aikman on the first drive.
00:38:21Our coverage of the NFL on TNT continues next Sunday
00:38:24with the Coors Light Pro Football Tonight pregame show at 7 o'clock Eastern.
00:38:28Then at 8 o'clock, we'll watch the Green Bay Packers
00:38:30take on the Jacksonville Jaguars from Jacksonville Municipal Stadium
00:38:34next Sunday right here on TNT.
00:38:37Boy, did Reggie White have another day today.
00:38:39I thought about that.
00:38:40Nate Newton last night did a marvelous impression of Reggie White.
00:38:45He sounds just like him.
00:38:48Aikman, punch, goes deep, man-for-man coverage,
00:38:52and it's over the head of Michael Irvin.
00:38:55Good coverage from Corey Fuller, number 27, the rookie from Florida State.
00:38:59You know, that's one thing you don't see much of the Cowboys,
00:39:02throwing the ball down the field deep.
00:39:05I mean, they run those skinny posts in the ends and things,
00:39:07but they don't throw the ball downfield a lot since Alvin Harper left.
00:39:11Now, you're going to see the pressure that Aikman gets.
00:39:13I think if John Randall takes a pretty good shot.
00:39:16I mean, Troy Aikman, as any of the top quarterbacks in the league are,
00:39:20he is top first.
00:39:22He's a football player first, a quarterback second.
00:39:26Notice he's got that plastic chin strap on again.
00:39:29Three stitches in his chin again last week.
00:39:32He said he's had stitches every season since he was a senior in high school.
00:39:38Emmitt Smith with a 41-yard line, and that will bring up a third down.
00:39:43This defense did a great job with Barry Sanders last week,
00:39:47and they're doing a pretty good job so far tonight.
00:39:50He has six carries, 24 yards,
00:39:52and they are getting a lot of purple jerseys around Emmitt Smith.
00:39:57That man is going to turn 40 this year in October,
00:40:01Someday, the doors are going to open.
00:40:03He's going to be a head coach.
00:40:04It's just got to happen.
00:40:06I don't understand why it hasn't already happened.
00:40:08It's an amazing thing.
00:40:19That's short of the first down at the 45-yard line.
00:40:21Dwayne Washington and Robert Griffin, 20 and 24, respectively.
00:40:27Good defensive ball game here.
00:40:30Barry Switzer felt they could throw on the Vikings,
00:40:33but they haven't been able to run particularly well.
00:40:38Just like Barry Sanders didn't really have anywhere to run last week,
00:40:42they played eight men up near the line of scrimmage.
00:40:45I mean, every gap seems to be filled here,
00:40:48and you get two guys sometimes in the gap,
00:40:50and that means you're going to be punting a lot.
00:40:53John Jett is on the punt for the third time.
00:40:56David Palmer waits for it.
00:40:58This could be returned.
00:41:01It bounces in front of Palmer,
00:41:03and it goes out of bounds at the 5-yard line.
00:41:07Make it the 6.
00:41:13We've got a ball game.
00:41:1411.37 to go, first half.
00:41:1610-6, Vikings.
00:41:18And the Dallas Cowboys all this week,
00:41:20up to and including the game tonight,
00:41:22for a special TNT presentation called Six Days to Sunday.
00:41:26It'll be a 90-minute show that will air on TNT on November 8th
00:41:31and on Sunday.
00:41:33They do such a wonderful job.
00:41:35I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes out.
00:41:37Oh, that's only because you were in the thing.
00:41:39How many times are you going to watch it?
00:41:41Now you're making me blush.
00:41:43And at 55, I don't blush well.
00:41:47Everett Lindsey stays in at right guard.
00:41:50Warren Moon is in his last seven passes.
00:41:52See how sustained he keeps it here tomorrow.
00:41:57He goes deep right side.
00:42:00And good coverage by Brock Marion and Darren Woodson of the Cowboys.
00:42:07Yeah, a lot of things happen when you're in the game.
00:42:10Yeah, a lot of things happen when you're a quarterback in the NFL.
00:42:14You know, we sometimes take for granted a simple completion,
00:42:16but the protection has to be right.
00:42:18You've got bodies flying all over the place.
00:42:20But what he did there was just give only one player a chance to catch that ball,
00:42:25and that was Chris Carter.
00:42:26And when you're backed up in the end zone, it's the right play.
00:42:28But they need a first down desperately.
00:42:31You can't afford to give Dallas good field position all night long.
00:42:34They need a first down in this series.
00:42:36Second and 10 now from the 6.
00:42:41Moon across the middle and complete.
00:42:46In and out of the hands.
00:42:47Should have been caught.
00:42:48Yeah, should have been caught.
00:42:49Should have been caught.
00:42:50And those are the kind of plays you look back on and you'd say,
00:42:53geez, you know, we ended up having to punt out of our own end zone
00:42:56when you maybe could have got the first down.
00:42:58Would have been a tough catch, but that was catchable by Robert Smith.
00:43:02Brings up a third and 10.
00:43:04Minnesota is 3 of 5 on third down conversions early in the game.
00:43:11Treacherous play now.
00:43:12Moon 7 to 10.
00:43:15Here's one of those situations again where those big physical receivers,
00:43:19Jake Reed and Chris Carter.
00:43:20A lot of teams have one physical receiver.
00:43:22These guys have two of them.
00:43:33That one was a rope at the 17-yard line.
00:43:36And a big play for Warren Moon and Chris Carter.
00:43:39Chris Carter is not a wide receiver.
00:43:41He's a football player.
00:43:42A lot like Michael Irving.
00:43:43And you start with those guys.
00:43:45And they're always making the tough ones.
00:43:48And that was another big play.
00:43:50Not a long play, Vern, but when you need it on third down,
00:43:53he's the slot receiver, number 80.
00:43:55And Warren Moon is waiting for him to get open.
00:43:58He's holding the ball even though he's in the pocket.
00:44:00He clears the linebacker and then the ball is zipped inside to him.
00:44:04That's a heck of a play.
00:44:05Carter's second catch of the night.
00:44:07First down and 10.
00:44:14Lays it right there and Robert Smith is jammed up.
00:44:19Russell Maryland was quick off the ball that time
00:44:23and beat Everett Lindsey got through to the stop.
00:44:26People tend to forget that this guy was the number one draft choice in the NFL in 91.
00:44:32It was because of plays like this.
00:44:34And he's a gap kind of player.
00:44:37I mean, if you don't get your hands on him early in the play,
00:44:40he's going to disrupt the play.
00:44:42And he did right there.
00:44:44And he's breathing better because he's got one of those nose things.
00:44:53Whoops!
00:44:55Charles Haley.
00:44:56He is as disruptive as a hyperactive child.
00:45:00I mean, he is always going to come off the corner
00:45:03and then sometimes he's going to fake it and come inside.
00:45:06And the Vikings said, hey, we had to have four different ways to try to block him tonight.
00:45:11Well, they haven't done a particularly good job of blocking Charles Haley.
00:45:16Number 94 is going to come in from the right.
00:45:18This time it's an inside move.
00:45:19Goes right by Jeff Christie to center and McDaniel.
00:45:23I mean, you're so worried about him beating you to the outside,
00:45:26you forget every once in a while he's going to stop and come inside on you.
00:45:30That's the first sack of the night for Warren Hunt and the Vikings.
00:45:34They look at a 30-22 and this ball is whistled down.
00:45:39You have to be real careful in this situation for two reasons.
00:45:44One, you can't...
00:45:49One, clearly you can't throw the interception.
00:45:53But two, your offensive lineman can't have a penalty in the end zone.
00:45:57It's a safety.
00:45:59So, you know, one thing Warren is saying,
00:46:01hey, if you get a hole, don't do it in the end zone.
00:46:03Make sure it's on the two-yard line.
00:46:05I don't mind your holes and protect me, just don't do it in the end zone.
00:46:09Third and 25.
00:46:13John Jarrett.
00:46:16Goes on the field down to the 46.
00:46:28Deep left side, behind Jake Reed.
00:46:30And the Vikings will have to punt from their own end zone.
00:46:33And Joe Avezzano's special teams can block punts and kicks.
00:46:38They have had 13 block punts and kicks over the last five years.
00:46:46And they always put pressure on the punter.
00:46:49And I wouldn't be surprised at all if they come after Mike Saxon right now.
00:46:55Mike Saxon, the former Cowboy, as well as the former Patriot,
00:47:00make sure he doesn't have his heel on the back line.
00:47:02They do not come.
00:47:03They've got the return on.
00:47:05Saxon nice and high.
00:47:06Kevin Williams, that's the 50.
00:47:11All in all, not bad downfield coverage.
00:47:14Orlando Thomas, number 43, made the tackle.
00:47:19Remember the story we told you about Mike Saxon getting taped this week?
00:47:23Orlando Thomas got taped yesterday.
00:47:25The rookie was late to practice with a donut.
00:47:27He'll learn.
00:47:29This is the Amazons' house.
00:47:32Inspired by the seven deadly sins.
00:47:35Gluttony, greed.
00:47:36I hate this city.
00:47:37You can expect five more.
00:47:39They know his motive.
00:47:40He's murdered several sermons to us.
00:47:42They know his game.
00:47:43I've gone and done it again.
00:47:45Seven deadly sins.
00:47:48Seven ways to die.
00:47:50Have you ever seen anything like this?
00:47:52No.
00:47:53Seven.
00:47:54Rated R.
00:47:55Seven.
00:47:56Rated R.
00:47:57Starts Friday.
00:48:009.20 to go.
00:48:01First half of play.
00:48:02Vikings lead at 10.6.
00:48:03Remember we told you how difficult it was to contain Dallas.
00:48:06They had had only one 3-and-out series in their first 21 drives in games 1 and 2.
00:48:11Well, tonight, take a look at this.
00:48:13They've had three punts and two 3-and-out drives.
00:48:17That's just good defense by the Vikings.
00:48:21They have really kind of taken away the run of Evan Smith.
00:48:24And that's where the Cowboys start.
00:48:268-10 under his center.
00:48:27Ray Donaldson will throw on first down.
00:48:29Right flat.
00:48:30That's good.
00:48:31In front of Corey Fleming.
00:48:33Number 27, Michael Irvin.
00:48:37Think about the Cowboys, Bill Vernon.
00:48:39You know, you let them hang around.
00:48:41And sooner or later, they are going to come up with some big plays.
00:48:45And Michael Irvin has a tremendous cushion there.
00:48:49That's a little bit easy.
00:48:51That's too easy.
00:48:53I mean, that's on the rookie, Corey Fuller.
00:48:56And there's Jay Novacek.
00:48:57And he has not been a factor yet tonight.
00:48:59But I still maintain you've got to jam him at the line of scrimmage.
00:49:03Otherwise, he's going to change.
00:49:05First to 10 from the 27-yard line.
00:49:09Play action again.
00:49:10A-10.
00:49:11Settles for the short man, Evan Smith.
00:49:13And he moves it down near the 22-yard line.
00:49:17That's a pickup of maybe six.
00:49:19It will be second down and four.
00:49:21The Cowboys, by the way, making this trip up from Dallas yesterday,
00:49:25did not get off to a great start.
00:49:27Their charter flight was delayed two and a half hours.
00:49:30And mechanical, they actually sat in the plane for that time
00:49:33and then had to change planes.
00:49:35They got here about 630 last night.
00:49:38The luggage did arrive with them.
00:49:42Which is good news.
00:49:43Yeah, you need it in this game.
00:49:44You need the luggage to arrive.
00:49:46Second and five at the eight-minute mark.
00:49:52Jack Del Rio, who played for a number of years in Dallas,
00:49:56came to Minnesota as a plan B selection.
00:50:01You know, this is the guy you could depend upon, Jack Del Rio.
00:50:04Just started his 100th game.
00:50:07Actually, he's never missed a practice the last four years for the Vikings.
00:50:13I mean, a guy you know he's going to show up.
00:50:15He's been very effective in the passing game.
00:50:17You see his tackles there.
00:50:19And over the last two years, nobody's intercepted.
00:50:21No linebacker has intercepted more passes than he.
00:50:24He's intercepted seven.
00:50:25Third and four.
00:50:27Kevin Williams comes left.
00:50:28Eight minutes.
00:50:30Not dropped.
00:50:31Not dropped.
00:50:32It was knocked away by Corey Fuller, the rookie.
00:50:35That was just a good defensive play.
00:50:37We've seen a lot of them.
00:50:38We have seen a lot of good defensive plays, really, by both teams.
00:50:41But Corey Fuller, the rookie, and we talked to him this week.
00:50:44He said, you know, I'm nervous, but I'm not intimidated.
00:50:47I mean, I'm looking forward to the challenge.
00:50:50I have a chance to distinguish myself.
00:50:52And he did right there.
00:50:53Okay, trivia question for the night.
00:50:55What do Corey Fuller and Deion Sanders have in common?
00:50:58University.
00:50:59Yep.
00:51:00They got the same agency.
00:51:02Yeah.
00:51:05Bono.
00:51:07That thing looked like a Hoyt Wilhelm pitch.
00:51:10It knuckled in there, though,
00:51:13and the Cowboys get on the board following the 39-yard field goal.
00:51:1810-9.
00:51:20Vikings get the ball back when we return.
00:51:22It's cookout time, and who's got lower prices that really cook?
00:51:30Well, your low-price leader, Winn-Dixie, of course.
00:51:33Recently, we checked the competitors' prices.
00:51:36We purchased a variety of cookout items
00:51:38and compared price for price at Winn-Dixie and Albertsons.
00:51:41And look at this, cookout fans.
00:51:43Winn-Dixie was 18% lower than Albertsons.
00:51:46That's right, 18% lower.
00:51:48So who really puts the sizzle in savings?
00:51:51Winn-Dixie, home of a lower total food bill and more.
00:51:55Winn-Dixie, home of a lower total food bill and more.

00:53:007'12", remaining first half.
00:53:02Minnesota leading by a 10-9 count.
00:53:06And the Vikings getting ready to return the kickoff.
00:53:09Warren Moon had a streak of seven in a row at one point.
00:53:16But his fumble, recovered by the Cowboys, led to a 19-yard touchdown.
00:53:21Just a point has proven the difference in the game right now.
00:53:25Here's John Baker to kick off.
00:53:27This one will be returned.
00:53:29And David Palmer coming up to the 8-yard line.
00:53:33And Palmer is popped as he gets out across the 20 to the 23-yard line.
00:53:39Let's go, baby! Let's go loud!
00:53:45Reggie Barnes, number 56, with the tackle.
00:53:47And here come the Vikings.
00:53:51Their defense has played well.
00:53:52Their special teams have played well.
00:53:54The offense really hasn't done a lot tonight.
00:53:57The one thing they have done is been able to get Robert Smith involved in the game.
00:54:01He's got 49 yards already on nine carries.
00:54:03He's had one long run of 44 yards.
00:54:05Yeah, I think that's a significant part.
00:54:09Actually, he's got eight carries for five yards.
00:54:11You take away 44 yards.
00:54:14Good man.
00:54:18I got my calculator out.
00:54:20Jake Reed.
00:54:23That'll move the sticks out to the 40-yard line.
00:54:25You know, we were talking about it, Vern, a little bit.
00:54:27Everybody seems to have one of these big guys.
00:54:30What makes the Vikings a little bit different, I think they have two of these big guys.
00:54:33And, you know, the play just starts when they catch the ball
00:54:37because they're strong and they can break tackles.
00:54:39They can break tackles like a good running back or make guys miss.
00:54:44And, you know, Jake Reed was a big difference for them a year ago.
00:54:4785 catches.
00:54:48The year before, he only fouled 11.
00:54:51He had a breakout year.
00:54:53That's a gain of 16 in the first out of the 40-yard line.
00:54:57Robert Smith.
00:54:58Oh, dear.
00:55:02Robert Jones.
00:55:04A lot of Robert in that play.
00:55:05Yes.
00:55:06Smith and Jones.
00:55:07Yeah.
00:55:08There's a guy you have to admire, though, Robert Jones.
00:55:12And he played this play perfectly.
00:55:15He is number 55, the middle linebacker, right here.
00:55:19But he fought through some things.
00:55:20And he fought through some traffic right here.
00:55:23Goes through McDaniel.
00:55:25Just smothers Robert Smith.
00:55:26You know, he was drafted to be the starting middle linebacker.
00:55:28Then got, and then he won a championship.
00:55:30Next year, he gets demoted.
00:55:32But you have to admire him.
00:55:33He's quick.
00:55:34Him fighting, him practicing.
00:55:35He's back starting again.
00:55:36He's had a very good start to his season.
00:55:38Time has called by the Vikings.
00:55:41I think the play clock may have been winding down.
00:55:43And Warren Moon said, let's stop the clock and chalk it over.
00:55:48So, they have two remaining.
00:55:50Second down and 11.
00:55:52And a 10-9 Minnesota lead.
00:55:55Vikings trying to go 2-1 and hand the Cowboys their first defeat.
00:56:00Next week, our circus moves on to Jacksonville Park.
00:56:04Next week, our circus moves on to Jacksonville, Florida.
00:56:08Recognize this guy?
00:56:10The Jaguars will meet Reggie White next week.
00:56:14As the Green Bay Packers travel down to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.
00:56:18And we'll be there next Sunday, 8 o'clock Eastern Time.
00:56:21The NFL on TNT.
00:56:24And they may be facing a former Packer quarterback, Mark Brunel.
00:56:28Who Philadelphia really won.
00:56:30As their quarterback, we ended up in Jacksonville.
00:56:31And I think Mark Brunel is going to be a heck of a player one of these days.
00:56:35We'll be there.
00:56:37In the meantime, we've got two quarters and about five minutes to go here.
00:56:40Amp Lee is on.
00:56:42As are Jake Reed, Chris Carter, Andrew Jordan, and Kadri Ismail.
00:56:47It was Ismail who caught an 85-yarder with a decisive touchdown.
00:56:51And went over 12-on-3.
00:56:53A deflected pass.
00:56:55Foreman rush.
00:56:57Moon rolls out.
00:56:58Flashes tight end.
00:57:00And they move the ball out to the 48-yard line.
00:57:03As Adrian Cooper and Dixon Edwards make the tackle.
00:57:06Nice play.
00:57:08Actually, Andrew Jordan there.
00:57:10He's the receiving tight end.
00:57:12And Cooper's that blocking tight end.
00:57:14I knew that.
00:57:16But I'll tell you, that's a nice little play-action fake.
00:57:18That gets you in that third short.
00:57:20I mean, they have mixed it up a little bit.
00:57:22The Vikings have.
00:57:24Where they try to throw the ball to the big wide receivers.
00:57:26And that off a little boot action to get away from Charles Haley.
00:57:40You know, that's a big little play again.
00:57:43I mean, and a patient throw by Warren Moon.
00:57:46He wanted to throw this ball out into the left flat.
00:57:49He wanted to throw this to Robert Smith in the left flat.
00:57:53And he was taken away.
00:57:54But he didn't rush it even though he knew there was a blitz.
00:57:58Courageous in the pocket.
00:58:00He finds number 80 Chris Carter.
00:58:02And even though it's only a three or four yard game.
00:58:04That's still a big little play.
00:58:06Or a little big play.
00:58:08I like that.
00:58:10I like that.
00:58:12I'm not sure which one I prefer.
00:58:14Strong play.
00:58:16Robert Smith.
00:58:18This is what Danny Green said surprised so many people about Robert Smith.
00:58:22That he breaks tackles.
00:58:24He's much stronger than you think.
00:58:26And what he says is that I wouldn't release Terry Allen until I found out that he was strong enough.
00:58:32And tough enough.
00:58:34And he is.
00:58:40Now let's take a look at the Lee sports scoreboard.
00:58:43Get you up to date on what happened today.
00:58:47Arizona comes from behind and wins that one.
00:58:50Second down and six.
00:58:52Second down and nine.
00:58:54Is our score.
00:58:56Carter in motion.
00:58:58Splits again.
00:59:00Danny.
00:59:02Warren Moon.
00:59:04Saw the blitz.
00:59:06Had a slant pattern.
00:59:08Jake Reed says we're going that way.
00:59:10A perfect throw.
00:59:12And a physical catch.
00:59:14Brian Binnock-Valpet before they were saying to us this week.
00:59:17We need to have Jake Reed really step up and have a game.
00:59:20And they've done that in the first half.
00:59:22When they've needed him.
00:59:24It's those short slant passes and you've got some physical plays.
00:59:27And that's Jake Reed's fourth catch of the night.
00:59:30Brian Billick the offensive coordinator.
00:59:33First down and ten at the 30 yard line.
00:59:35They hand it inside to Charles Evans.
00:59:39Third year running back from Clark Atlanta College.
00:59:44The other thing that Minnesota is doing is controlling the time of possession.
00:59:48Which is a key thing against this Dallas team.
00:59:50I mean Dallas has so many weapons on offense.
00:59:53And can beat you a lot of different ways.
00:59:55But they're really controlling the ball.
00:59:57And they've been able to score as well.
00:59:59The Cowboys looked unbeatable in games one and two this year.
01:00:02Remember last year?
01:00:04Game three Monday night.
01:00:06They lost to Detroit.
01:00:08They know the time of possession.
01:00:10I don't remember but thanks for reminding me.
01:00:14They fake the pass.
01:00:16Moon rolls out.
01:00:18Keeps Tony Tolbert right in his face.
01:00:20And he finds Jordan the tight end.
01:00:22To the 30 yard line.
01:00:24But Tony Tolbert was introducing himself to Warren Moon.
01:00:26And Tony Tolbert was talking to us yesterday.
01:00:29Saying hey the one thing about Warren Moon.
01:00:31You can't let him get started.
01:00:33Because if he gets started well.
01:00:35He is very tough to stop.
01:00:37And with an aggressive defense.
01:00:39A defense that hits a lot of gaps.
01:00:41There's a lot of movement.
01:00:43And an effective play.
01:00:45A good play.
01:00:47They've done it twice successfully.
01:00:4935-10-9.
01:00:51As we near the two minute warning.
01:00:55Lee is the running back.
01:00:57Moon picks it up.
01:00:59And that ball is knocked away by Darren Woodson number 28.
01:01:04It tells you something though Vern.
01:01:05About how the Cowboys feel about Darren Woodson.
01:01:08A strong safety when they line him up.
01:01:10On Chris Carter.
01:01:12One on one.
01:01:14And then he does a job like that.
01:01:16Darren Woodson is a heck of a fighter.
01:01:18In this slot.
01:01:20Is Chris Carter number 80.
01:01:22Woodson gets his hands on him.
01:01:24Within the five yard zone.
01:01:26And then knocks the ball away.
01:01:28That's good defense by Woodson.
01:01:30And that's going to bring on Juan Rivera.
01:01:32To drive a 48 yard field goal.
01:01:33This would be his 32nd in a row.
01:01:35He's had one of 48 in this streak.
01:01:38He also had one of 51 yards.
01:01:41He's made his last 31.
01:01:46Juan Rivera.
01:01:48Mike Morris will snap it.
01:01:50Mike Sachs will hold it.
01:01:52And the streak is over.
01:02:03His brother Carlos.
01:02:05Who is a kicker at Tennessee.
01:02:07Is here.
01:02:09And I'm sure he'll commiserate with his brother.
01:02:11When this game is over.
01:02:13The streak ends at 31.
01:02:15Matt Stover.
01:02:17Of the Cleveland Browns.
01:02:19Is now the current holder.
01:02:21He's hit 23 in a row.
01:02:26We stood side by side with Mike Boren.
01:02:29When he laid 90,000 feet of sod.
01:02:32We carried the team's equipment when Mike Jr. pitched his first game.
01:02:36Then we chauffeured the whole family off to Angelo's to celebrate.

01:03:56♪♪
01:03:57Bois Dravet is still pacing on the sidelines.
01:04:01Thinking, no doubt, about that missed 48-yarder that saw the streak come to an end with 31 consecutive field goals.
01:04:08Had his son Nicholas with him at practice yesterday morning.
01:04:10He introduced us to Nick as his summer holder.
01:04:13Yeah.
01:04:14And Nick knew how to do it. Get the laces away.
01:04:16He said, throw in the goal post.
01:04:18First and 10, Dallas. They trail by one.
01:04:20Aikman gets back, goes deep left side.
01:04:24That's a bounce pass and it's incomplete in the hands of Michael Urban.
01:04:29It's amazing. This first half, Dallas only has 70 total yards.
01:04:3227 rushing yards.
01:04:34Now, mind you, they came into this game, you know, averaging 197 yards rushing.
01:04:38They've dominated people.
01:04:40But the Viking defense has kind of kept them on their heels.
01:04:43Coming up for the Fruit of the Loom halftime report, Vince Cellini, the no-huddle highlights.
01:04:47A fast-paced look at the big plays of the day.
01:04:49Ernie Johnson will have a special guest.
01:04:52That's a minute 56 away from now.
01:04:54Second and 10.
01:04:56Stunched by the Viking defense. Aikman goes right to center.
01:04:59Michael Urban at the 41 of Minnesota.
01:05:02That ball was thrown with some velocity.
01:05:04The pass before was not.
01:05:07That thing was thrown on time, with velocity, and there's no reaction time when you throw it down.
01:05:12Hard to Michael Urban.
01:05:1421-yard gain, first down.
01:05:16Cowboys do have all three timeouts left.
01:05:18Follow the ball.
01:05:21And Aikman fell on it.
01:05:27He was wondering whether somebody swiped the ball, maybe.
01:05:30The ball's a timeout.
01:05:34Cowboys use one of theirs and they have two left.
01:05:38The ball came up. The snap was started and it looked like it stopped.
01:05:42It looked like a double clutch on the snap.
01:05:46In any event, you could look at it one of two ways.
01:05:49The Cowboy offense is out of sync or the Viking defense is playing awfully well.
01:05:54Ray Donaldson is the new center.
01:05:56Of course, Mark Stepnoski took free agency and departed Dallas.
01:06:00Donaldson, 16 years with the Colts.
01:06:03You know, you think about this offensive line.
01:06:06Hudson Houck, the offensive line coach, may be the assistant coach of the year thus far in the NFL.
01:06:12Because, you know, they had to replace Stepnoski, as you said.
01:06:16Larry Allen's a new guy at right guard.
01:06:18Eric Williams had to rehabilitate them.
01:06:20And yet the beat goes on.
01:06:22I mean, these guys, they put some new guys in there.
01:06:25They give the ball to Emmitt and generally think good things happen.
01:06:28They put some new guys in there.
01:06:30They give the ball to Emmitt and generally think good things happen.
01:06:33From the 43, second down and 12, 10-9, Minnesota Legion.
01:06:42Adrian gets pressured.
01:06:44Donaldson gets it.
01:06:45And here in Minnesota, the moose call is heard.
01:06:49Well, appropriately in Minnesota, you get a moose call.
01:06:51Absolutely.
01:06:52Yeah.
01:06:53You know, where else would you get a moose call but up here?
01:06:55Well, this is your old stomping ground, you old Swede Norwegian, you.
01:06:59Jompin' Yemeni.
01:07:01Oh, yeah.
01:07:02Can you name three words that begin with F-J other than fjord?
01:07:06Come on.
01:07:09Huh?
01:07:11Get back to me.
01:07:12I've got to think about that one.
01:07:14I wondered where you were last night.
01:07:16You're in the library again, huh?
01:07:17Time has been called.
01:07:19Dwayne Washington is the injured viking.
01:07:22And time has been called by Minnesota.
01:07:24So they have one left.
01:07:27Coming up after the game tonight, TNT presents a tribute to a quarterback
01:07:31who led the 49ers to four Super Bowl victories.
01:07:34Watch a special encore presentation of Joe Montana, the fire inside,
01:07:39tonight on TNT.
01:07:41That's following the Steel postgame report.
01:07:44Well, think of Super Bowl quarterbacks.
01:07:46Troy Aikman has two of them under his belt.
01:07:48I think by the age of 27, I believe, he has won two Super Bowls.
01:07:52And this is a team that is very focused.
01:07:56Talk to them and they're concerned about all the distractions,
01:08:00but they feel like they can do it again.
01:08:02Number 20 is Dwayne Washington, the injured player.
01:08:08He took a shot right in the neck.
01:08:11He's back up on his feet.
01:08:13Now, by the way, we've not had any official report on Chris Hinton,
01:08:18the offensive guard who was taken to the locker room earlier in this half.
01:08:22We'll get that shortly, I would assume.
01:08:25And Washington's going to stay in the game, so it'll be third and two.
01:08:30Yeah, Aikman has solidly established.
01:08:32I think back to what Bill Parcells told us in preseason
01:08:36when he talked about quarterbacks in the league and the great ones.
01:08:39And he said, I know Troy Aikman's got it, whatever it is.
01:08:43The total package.
01:08:44The total package.
01:08:45He said, I think Marino's got it.
01:08:47I know Aikman's got it.
01:08:49Pretty good tribute.
01:08:56He's back.
01:08:59Novacek, boy, you don't see that very often.
01:09:01Whoa, man.
01:09:04A very uncharacteristic performance, an offensive performance by the Cowboys tonight.
01:09:10I mean, a fumble by Smith, a drop by James Novacek.
01:09:14You got the matchup you wanted on a linebacker, Thomas.
01:09:17Perfectly thrown ball, and they're going to go for it.
01:09:20Now, fourth and two ordinarily is a passing down.
01:09:24But when you have a guy like Emmitt Smith, I think you can do either.
01:09:28I think you can take a chance and give him the ball, and certainly you can throw it.
01:09:32Thus far this year, the Cowboys two of two on fourth down.
01:09:36Fourth and two.
01:09:38Smith behind his right tackle.
01:09:40Aikman will throw.
01:09:43He's got it.
01:09:44Irvin, that'll be a first down at the 31.
01:09:48Michael Irvin over the middle of the field again.
01:09:51If you don't defend the middle against the Cowboys, you're in trouble
01:09:54because that's where most of their key plays come,
01:09:57in the running game and in the passing game.
01:10:02Aikman, Kevin Williams incomplete.
01:10:05Good defensive job.
01:10:07As we see Kevin Williams burn, I think for the Cowboys,
01:10:10they have to find a replacement for Alvin Harper.
01:10:12They're hoping Kevin Williams can be the guy.
01:10:14The Vikings found the replacement for Anthony Carter and Jake Reed.
01:10:18The Cowboys need to find that replacement for Alvin Harper.
01:10:20They hope Kevin Williams can be the guy,
01:10:23but they're not going to have the dynamic long passes they had a year ago
01:10:26with Alvin Harper.
01:10:29Kevin Williams had this one in his hands.
01:10:31Good defensive job by Broderick Thomas.
01:10:34It's second down and ten.
01:10:37Excellent.
01:10:39Stunts and a blitz.
01:10:40And good protection from the referee.
01:10:43At the 15-yard line, first down, Michael Irvin.
01:10:48Michael Irvin's a great loose ball receiver.
01:10:51I mean the ball's in the air.
01:10:52He considers it his.
01:10:57Now Jay Novacek, number 84, kind of sets up the deep throw.
01:11:02He kind of occupies kind of people in the middle.
01:11:05And, you know, that's a nice play.
01:11:06He kind of short-armed him intentionally because he knew Michael Irvin was behind him.
01:11:10I mean the short arm wasn't fear.
01:11:13The short arm was because he felt Irvin behind him.
01:11:16Yeah, no alligator arms there.
01:11:18None at all.
01:11:19I knew it was coming.
01:11:21Well, those are the intentional alligator arms there.
01:11:24The trouble is he has that same posture when the check comes.
01:11:29Well, you know, now you find yourself in a situation, you know,
01:11:32you played well all first half.
01:11:33I'm talking about Minnesota.
01:11:35And you think you're going to go into the halftime with a lead.
01:11:38And then a methodical cowboy team.
01:11:40Sometimes they can, you know, beat you with big plays.
01:11:42And then they just kind of wear you down with that offensive line.
01:11:45And this has been a methodical drive.
01:11:49Still have one timeout remaining.
01:11:53They've got a first and ten at the 14-yard line.
01:11:56And they trail by one.
01:11:59Backs in the eye.
01:12:02Play action.
01:12:03Aikman plays it out to Johnson.
01:12:05He drops it.
01:12:06Nice.
01:12:07Wow.
01:12:08Very strange evening for the Cowboys.
01:12:11In the land of the moose.
01:12:13Yeah.
01:12:14That one didn't fit.
01:12:15Jay Novacek drops the ball.
01:12:17We don't see that often.
01:12:18Darrell Johnson drops the ball.
01:12:19You don't see that much.
01:12:20Troy Aikman hasn't really been on.
01:12:22He's thrown a couple of balls into the dirt.
01:12:24The last couple of throws to Michael Irvin, though,
01:12:26he actually really drilled the ball well.
01:12:29Blame it on the mechanicals of the ball.
01:12:31I think you're right.
01:12:33Emmitt Smith only 27 yards in the first half.
01:12:39The Cowboys have been perfect so far this season inside the 20s.
01:12:42Why not get Michael Irvin out of the shot?
01:12:46We got him doubled.
01:12:49There's Novacek.
01:12:52He's down at the 7.
01:12:5525 seconds remaining in the first half.
01:12:57That is short of the first down.
01:12:59It'll be third.
01:13:01They got one timeout remaining.
01:13:02This is a play you have to be careful on.
01:13:04You think it's first down.
01:13:05He's going to use it.
01:13:06He's going to burn it.
01:13:08Smart play.
01:13:09That's the clock, yes.
01:13:10Generally, when the clock gets under 20 seconds, you use your timeout.
01:13:13Even if you only have one left.
01:13:16This is too important of a play.
01:13:17Third and two, you have to have the right play.
01:13:19You can't rush yourself.
01:13:24Sometimes you've got to win ugly.
01:13:26This far, this first half, it has been ugly for the Cowboys.
01:13:29Are you thinking at this point anything at all about the first down?
01:13:32I think you're still thinking about the first down.
01:13:36You've got 15 seconds.
01:13:37You can get it up and you can still die.
01:13:40Again, I still think with a guy like him, there's Ernie Zampezi, the offensive coordinator.
01:13:46There's a chance you can still slip him the ball inside.
01:13:50The matching of wits between Ernie Zampezi and Tony Dungy.
01:13:54They both had their moments this evening.
01:13:58The Cowboys have used their last timeout.
01:14:02They face a third down and two now, trailing by one.
01:14:0510-9.
01:14:07The Vikings better jam Jay Novacek at the line of scrimmage.
01:14:11Don't let him have a clean release.
01:14:13Johnson starts in motion.
01:14:14Four-man rush.
01:14:15Aikman scrambles, shovels it.
01:14:16They got him short of the first down.
01:14:17It's fourth down.
01:14:18And the clock is running.
01:14:19They can't stop it.
01:14:20Got to get up and die it.
01:14:21They can't stop it.
01:14:22Throw it.
01:14:23Throw it.
01:14:24Nope.
01:14:25That's good defense.
01:14:26Wow.
01:14:28Good defense and poor clock management.
01:14:34The Cowboys are in the lead.
01:14:35They've got to get up and die it.
01:14:36They can't stop it.
01:14:37Throw it.
01:14:38Throw it.
01:14:39Nope.
01:14:40That's good defense.
01:14:41Wow.
01:14:42That is an excellent half of defense by the Minnesota Vikings.
01:14:53It really is.
01:14:55To a degree, Barry Switzer's offensive team shot itself in its collective foot,
01:14:59but the Viking defense should get a lot of credit.
01:15:03There's Emmitt Smith and there's Broderick Thomas
01:15:05and a huge play by Thomas the linebacker.
01:15:09The clock runs out on the Cowboys.
01:15:11First time this season they have been stopped inside the red zone.
01:15:15We're at the halftime.
01:15:16It's 10-9, Minnesota.
