00:00It is something special, the Oakland Coliseum, the home of the Oakland Raiders,
00:06as they entertain the Dallas Cowboys.
00:09A perfect, perfect afternoon.
00:11And I'll tell you, these fans are something else.
00:15Arriving here at the Oakland Coliseum,
00:18well, it makes you think that football is what it is and what it should be.
00:23And when John Madden, my colleague, got here, he got a special welcome.
00:28We want John! We want John!
00:45You want John, we got John.
00:47John, it has to be a special feeling for you to be back.
00:50There's no place I'd rather be today than right here.
00:53And, you know, I always felt that this was the greatest place to play football in the United States.
00:58I know we had some of the best games here, some of the best players here,
01:02and I knew we had the greatest fans here.
01:04I never felt that football should have left Oakland,
01:07and I'll tell you, they're back where they belong.
01:09And the fans are certainly the most enthusiastic we've seen in a long time.
01:14Let's talk about the two teams involved, the Raiders-Cowboys.
01:17Both start with triple quarterbacks.
01:20And I think, you know, I was watching Jeff Hostetler in the warm-ups,
01:23and, you know, he has a broken left hand and he has a bad left shoulder.
01:27And when I was just watching, it looks like it's affecting his motion.
01:30Now, I don't know how many hits he's going to be able to take today.
01:34You can see when he throws, he's holding that left arm in close.
01:37I was watching Troy Aikman.
01:39Now, we know that Troy was injured last week against the San Francisco 49ers,
01:43didn't finish the game, practiced most of this week.
01:46I don't think the knee is still completely healthy.
01:49And I'll tell you what, when you have two quarterbacks like that,
01:52the biggest thing has to be pass protection and pass rush.
01:55John, confidence certainly is a very big factor in a game like this or any game.
01:59Who has the confidence edge?
02:01I don't think the Cowboys have it, but I think they can get it back.
02:04They were beaten by the 49ers last week.
02:06I think they not only lost in the field, but they also lost their confidence.
02:10Conversely, the Raiders have all kinds of confidence.
02:13They have never lost here in the Coliseum this year.
02:16They feel it. The fans feel it.
02:18And they are going to go after the Cowboys.
02:21And you can't help but feel it yourself.
02:23So, get ready.

18:06to do they have to redirect they

18:18Well you talk about a guy who's
18:20having a big year who's really
18:21made a difference in this Oakland
18:23Raider team it's Harvey Williams
18:25and the way that you know he is
18:27running with a ball you see he's
18:28already gained seven hundred and
18:30sixty seven yards.
18:31He's averaged four point six
18:33yards per carry scored eight
18:35touchdown.
18:36And I think the combination of
18:37Harvey Williams along with this
18:39big offensive line have really
18:41helped this offense of the
18:42Raiders.
18:44Robert Jones injured on the last
18:48play down and being checked.
18:53This has been a Robert Jones is
18:56looks like it's a groin area you
18:58know one thing I said that this
19:00is a safe field it is because
19:02it's very heavy and it's a
19:03little slick.
19:04Now one thing when it is slick
19:06your cleats aren't going to stay
19:07in the ground and sometimes when
19:09they do come out of the ground
19:11the area that you do injure is
19:12that groin area.
19:14So you'll have more groin pulls
19:16on a field like this.
19:17But I think you have less of the
19:18serious type you know knee
19:20injuries ankle injuries those
19:21types of things.
19:24Robert Jones is the guy you
19:25don't think about being hurt for
19:27some reason because he's been so
19:29durable since he's been the
19:30middle linebacker and played
19:32just every down that they've
19:34asked him to play.
19:36So on this drive the Cowboys have
19:38lost a Lundis Bryce are starting
19:40corner today and a Robert Jones
19:42are starting middle linebacker
19:44today.

20:25miles has taken the place with
20:27Robert Jones in the middle
20:30Williams hit right at the line

20:35He missed it by about a foot and
20:36he might have missed it again.

20:40This is this is a one that you
20:41spot all he has to do is get the
20:42all he has to do is get to that
20:43white line.

21:02trained in Austin Texas with the
21:04Cowboys for a week and played
21:06them in preseason and they felt
21:08confident coming into this game
21:10and they had both their lines
21:12offense and defense matched up
21:14well with this cowboy team
21:20a couple as he ducked underneath
21:23Tony told but one thing I
21:25remember when the workouts were
21:27going on against each other
21:28almost every every one of the
21:30Cowboys were impressed not just
21:34with the physical ability of the
21:35Raiders but how big they were
21:38and they do match up very well
21:40and they're big and they're
21:41strong and they have that
21:43combination inside and the other
21:45combination they have is that
21:47outside receiver speed and then
21:50that outside speed on the
21:51defensive corners second and
21:53nine intended for Hobbs behind
22:02him just a bit.
22:03And you know what's important
22:04with this with his first quarter
22:05for the Raiders is as I said
22:07earlier I think that Jeff
22:08Hostetler left shoulders really
22:10bother him.
22:11We know that he has a broken
22:12hand that whole left side of his
22:14body this year he's had a throat
22:16a left shoulder and a left hand
22:19and it really is bothering but
22:20one thing the Cowboys haven't
22:22knocked him down yet and you
22:24have to give that the pass
22:25protection see that thing he's
22:27wearing on his hand.
22:28See he has it.
22:29He has a thing he has a hard
22:31thing on the outside of the hand
22:33and a soft thing on the inside
22:34of the glove and tape and
22:36everything.

25:44defense.
25:45You have to go deep.
25:46And in order to go deep you have
25:49to protect your quarterback and
25:51that protection was good.
25:55Well the officials are talking
25:57this one over and it looked like
25:59one of the Raiders was signaling
26:01that the ball was tipped.
26:03Whereas if it's tipped at or
26:04around the line of scrimmage or
26:06tip before it gets to the
26:07receiver there can be no pass
26:09interference.
26:12But there was a Raiders.
26:13There was no tip.
26:15We'll see how it could be tipped
26:17back by the line of scrimmage
26:20out on a ball like that.

34:10We're talking about the
34:11playmakers that change momentum
34:13and we saw it right there we saw
34:15I think that Emmitt Smith started
34:17it with his running and it went
34:19to Michael Irvin with his pass
34:21pattern and then it went to this
34:23guy Deion Sanders first and 10
34:32at about this 14 yard line two
34:38tight ends again.
34:43Emmitt Smith makes the reception
34:46he can make a mess.
34:47He gets the first down.
34:51The one thing that Emmitt Smith
34:52really hasn't done yet is being
34:54able to work that middle.
34:55You know he's gotten off tackle
34:57and they're able to get the ball
34:58outside.
34:59It's hard for Emmitt Smith to
35:00run to the outside.
35:02But if you want to get Emmitt
35:03Smith to the outside you have to
35:05throw him these little patterns
35:07these little loop pattern that is
35:09in lieu of a run to the outside
35:11and once you get him out there
35:13he'll leave some guys picking
35:15grass.
35:16You better have him very close
35:18to the sideline like the Raiders
35:19did on that one.
35:26He was able to find some picking
35:28room I guess you'd have to call
35:30it straight ahead and to the
35:31right.
35:34Right now this offensive line of
35:36the Cowboys is winning that
35:37battle the line.
35:39And you see this is what Emmitt
35:40Smith looks at.
35:41He's going to get the ball here.
35:43He feels a block there.
35:44Then out of his periphery he's
35:46able to look back to that side
35:49and know that he can get two or
35:50three more yards.
35:52That's not a big deal when you
35:53have to check and go back into
35:55Chester McLaughlin though.
35:57But they knocked Chester
35:58backwards.
35:59They sure did.
36:00They got movement on him.
36:01And that doesn't happen a lot.

36:05Smith was down to about the
36:09three.
36:10Maybe not enough for a first
36:13one of the things that great
36:14runners have like Emmitt Smith
36:15is that tremendous vision you

36:18I think it's that combination of
36:20the of the vision and balance
36:22and strength and power and
36:24number 22 has them all and an
36:27immense will to win.

36:54want to be stepping on things

36:56And if you're Emmitt Smith and
36:58your shoe unties or something
37:00doesn't work you can just call
37:01a guy out and say hey bring some
37:02stuff out here and let me clean
37:04my shoes off and have someone
37:06tie these things for me because
37:10I think you know we know that he
37:12has to have everything ready to
37:14go because the Cowboys are
37:16inside the five yard line and
37:19you're going to get a heavy dose
37:21of Emmitt Smith in this area or
37:23at least faking to Emmitt Smith
37:35whatever they did it worked on
37:37those shoes.
37:39Maybe it's the feet that's in
37:40the shoes or the body that's on
37:42top of the feet.
37:43I think that has something to do
37:44with it that nine carries so far
37:4730 yards and a touchdown and and
37:50the Cowboys have really gotten
37:52the confidence you know the
37:53things we talked about the
37:54confidence and all those things
37:56momentum the Cowboys really have
37:58it now.
37:59And you notice how quiet this
38:00crowd is.
38:04Eighteen touchdowns rushing for
38:07Emmitt Smith is more than any
38:09NFL team.
38:11He's approaching the touchdowns
38:14in a year record.
