00:00Are you ready for some football?
00:08Last January, the Dallas Cowboys completed a four-year ascent to the pinnacle of professional
00:12football.
00:13The kill shot was emphatic, a 52-17 victory over the Buffalo Bills to win Super Bowl XXVII.
00:20Tonight in Washington, the defense of the Super Bowl title begins.
00:26It's doubly hard to do it again, and the Cowboys must now confront the demons that
00:31bedevil a championship team hoping to retain its title.
00:34But don't pity Dallas coach Jimmy Johnson.
00:37We have an excellent football team, we have a lot of talent on this team, and our guys
00:41understand how to win, and they have a tremendous amount of confidence.
00:47And no player is more ready to prove Johnson right than quarterback Troy Aikman.
00:53We're ready to go.
00:54I feel good about this football team.
00:55I think everybody's really looking forward to getting this season underway and putting
00:58all the speculation and talk behind us and seeing what kind of team we're going to have.
01:02The world champion Dallas Cowboys face the Washington Redskins on the season premiere
01:08of the 24th year of ABC's Monday Night Football.
01:15Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in the nation's capital on a warm Labor Day evening,
01:20this stadium will be rocking tonight as the Redskins and Cowboys kick off their 1993 season.
01:29Hello again everyone, I'm Frank Gifford along with Al Mickelson, Dan Deardorff, and welcome
01:33to our first regular season telecast of our 24th year of bringing you Monday Night Football.
01:38It doesn't get any better than this, RFK Stadium primetime.
01:41The last two Super Bowl winners, the Redskins of course, going 13-3 in 1991.
01:46They won Super Bowl XXVI, they fell to 9-7 a year ago.
01:49Now, Richie Pettibone is a new coach who will try to get them back into that Super Bowl.
01:54Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys, they've been on an unbelievable four-year trip under head
01:58coach Jimmy Johnson, owner Jerry Jones.
02:00They went from 1-15 in 1989, they won it all big time against Buffalo 52-17 last January
02:08in the Super Bowl and they are ready to repeat.
02:10But Al Mickelson, again welcome to our 24th year, your 8th year, my 23rd, Dan's 7th.
02:17Nothing happens when you win the Super Bowl.
02:19You get the fame, you get the glory, you get the wealth, but you also get the problems.
02:22And you get a real big problem if you're Dallas.
02:24You get no Emmitt Smith.
02:27Emmitt Smith is unsigned and all he has done the last two years is lead the National Football
02:31League in rushing.
02:32So instead of Emmitt Smith tonight, Washington takes a look at Derek Lassik, a fourth-round
02:38rookie draft choice from the University of Alabama.
02:40But they still have Aikman and they still have the great receivers in Harper, Irvin,
02:44and Novacek.
02:45Jimmy Johnson told us last night, he said, we are a better team than the Redskins even
02:50without Emmitt Smith.
02:51And one reason he can feel that way is that despite not sending one defensive player to
02:56the Pro Bowl last year, their overall defense was number one in the National Football League.
03:01And tonight they'll face a Redskins offense that frankly, Dan, was very up and down last
03:05season led by Mark Rippon.
03:07But a Redskins offense that plays at RFK Stadium, one of the great, great scenes in the National
03:12Football League.
03:13It certainly is, Alan.
03:14I'll tell you from a former player's perspective, a tough place to play because you can be intimidated
03:18by this crowd.
03:19And it's hard to win here.
03:20It's just that nobody told the Dallas Cowboys, somehow they've won three of their last five
03:24meetings here at RFK.
03:26A couple of key matchups tonight.
03:28When Washington has the ball, a lot of pressure on their left tackle, Mo Elowanibi.
03:32He's replacing the great Jim Lachey and he has to go against Charles Haley.
03:37They're going to have to help him out early because he'll certainly be tight at the start
03:40of this ballgame.
03:41Now when Dallas has the football, look to the wideouts.
03:44Look to Alvin Harper and Michael Irvin.
03:47They enjoy a tremendous height advantage against the two five-foot, eight-inch cornerbacks
03:51of the Redskins, A.J. Johnson and Daryl Green.
03:55They're going to have to win the ballgame tonight by passing the ball, talking about
03:58the Cowboys.
03:59Finally, I'd just like to say this.
04:01We talked about this being our 24th year to open up here at RFK.
04:05It's just absolutely perfect.
04:07We're glad you're with us and let's do it.
04:10And we'll do it before the normal capacity crowd.
04:13Every seat sold for the entire season and the Dallas Cowboys have sold every seat for
04:20each of their home games in 1993.
04:24So the Cowboys, who won the Super Bowl last year against the Redskins, who won the Super
04:29Bowl following the 1991 season.
04:32And Chip Lohmuller, one of the best in the league, to kick off as Dallas will take over
04:38on offense for the first series.
04:41Minus Emmitt Smith as we take a look at Kevin Williams, number 85.
04:44He's a rookie from Miami.
04:47And Brock Marion, a rookie from Nevada, Reno.
04:48Marion is there to block.
04:49Jimmy Johnson has said, I want the ball in Williams' hands.
04:50It bounces at the 11.
04:51Williams takes it from the 6 and brings it back up to the 27-yard line.
05:06And here comes the Cowboys.
05:07Troy Aikman, he was the number one pick in the draft in 1989 out of UCLA.
05:08Now in his fifth year, Super Bowl MVP.
05:09He's gotten better every year.
05:10Johnston is the blocking back.
05:11Lasek is the running back.
05:12Harper and Irvin are the wide outs.
05:13Novacek, the tight end.
05:14Two and eight.
05:15Newton, Stavnoski, Gogan, and Williams.
05:16The interior five.
05:17John Gieseck, who would normally start in the middle.
05:18Now he's in the middle.
05:19Now he's in the middle.
05:20Now he's in the middle.
05:21Now he's in the middle.
05:22Now he's in the middle.
05:23Now he's in the middle.
05:24Now he's in the middle.
05:25Now he's in the middle.
05:26Now he's in the middle.
05:27Now he's in the middle.
05:28Now he's in the middle.
05:29Now he's in the middle.
05:30Now he's in the middle.
05:31Now he's in the middle.
05:32Now he's in the middle.
05:33Now he's in the middle.
05:34Now he's in the middle.
05:35Now he's in the middle.
05:36Now he's in the middle.
05:37Now he's in the middle.
05:38Now he's in the middle.
05:39Now he's in the middle.
05:40Now he's in the middle.
05:41Now he's in the middle.
05:42Now he's in the middle.
05:43Now he's in the middle.
05:44Now he's in the middle.
05:45Now he's in the middle.
05:46Now he's in the middle.
05:47Now he's in the middle.
05:48Now he's in the middle.
05:49Now he's in the middle.
05:50Now he's in the middle.
05:51The only play last year is defending Super Bowl champs, a sack by the Cowboys.
05:55By Vincent Smith, is now with Chicago.
05:57It must be about the Super Bowl start that is less than glamorous.
06:03At least he recovers it.
06:09Second down and 12.
06:17They send Johnston in motion.
06:20And here is Derrick Lassik's first carry.
06:22And it's a nice one as he takes it out to the 33-yard line.
06:26He is hit there by Brad Edwards, the safety.
06:29Here's the Redskins defense.
06:31They play a base 4-3 with Mann, Williams, Johnson, and Shane Collins up front.
06:36Andre Collins is hurt, so it is Carl Banks, the former Giant,
06:39Bouvet in the middle, and Monte Coleman, spelling Collins.
06:43Johnson and Green are at the corners, and Copeland and Edwards are on the safeties.
06:49Third down and four.
06:54From the 33-yard line.
06:58Aikman's first pass of the season is on the money at the 39-yard line.
07:02It is caught by Michael Irvin, and that's enough for a first down.
07:09Irvin well covered, but Aikman drills it in there.
07:12And Irvin, whose seemingly every catch results in a first down, picks one up here.
07:18Aikman touched on just how big these outside receivers are.
07:21Five-foot-eight Daryl Green.
07:23He was in a good position to play the ball, but the body was shielded out by Michael Irvin.
07:28And watch him all night long, guys, on how he shields himself.
07:32He'll use his arms. He'll use anything.
07:35Michael Irvin, one of the best in the league at separating himself from a quarterback.
07:38Lassik again, and he's hit by Banks.
07:42And squirts forward, but they rule it down at the 41.
07:45We talked about Irvin. Irvin last year caught 78 passes to lead the team.
07:4971 of those receptions, good for a first down.
07:53And he had a 17-9 average, and that's just almost unbelievable.
07:58But he is an incredible touch player.
08:00And getting back to Derek Lassik, who, of course, replaced Emmitt Smith.
08:04Jimmy Johnson told us, well, look, he is about a 170-pounder and a 190-pound body,
08:08but he'll give us everything he's got.
08:10He won't make the break, break the tackle that Emmitt Smith will, but he'll give you it all.
08:16Second and seven at the 41. Here's a draw. Here's Lassik.
08:20And he passes way for about a yard and a half.
08:23And he's pushed back by Mann, among others.
08:27And you caught a glimpse there of the type of runner that he is, the loose and spinning.
08:30He's used to playing in front of big crowds as Lassik.
08:33I mean, after all, Alabama was the national champion last year.
08:36Well, he's the type of a player that looks for a hole rather than trying to create a hole.
08:41Emmitt Smith was more of, to use a football term, a north and south runner.
08:46He always was going straight up the field.
08:48Not so with Derek Lassik.
08:50He will take a chance to go laterally to try to make a big play.
08:54Third and five. Lassik out. Kevin Williams comes in in the slot.
08:57Johnston stays in the block.
08:59Aikman gets good protection.
09:01And then the pass is incomplete as it is broken up by Darrell Green.
09:06Harper was open and was open for a while over the middle,
09:09but the pass was late and Green gets in there to break it up and force a punt.
09:13Aikman looking downfield. He did not see Harper come open.
09:16He was open for the first down completion.
09:18By the time Aikman comes back to him, Green has made the coverage.
09:23Look across the middle. He gets shielded out.
09:25Green gets taken out by his own man Gouveia.
09:27By the time Aikman comes back to him, he's covered.
09:29Good play by Green.
09:30You think Darrell Green still has a burst of the football?
09:33Harper was two yards in front of him and he ate it up and still got a hand on the ball.
09:37Ryan Mitchell to accept the kick from the new Dallas punter, John Jett,
09:41after Mike Saxon had done the punting for years.
09:44Mitchell fields at the 7.
09:46And an orderly, dangerous Mitchell is smothered back at the 5-yard line by rookie Darren Smith.
09:55So the Shins get it, but deep in their own territory.
09:58Three and a half minutes into our opener.
10:02ABC's Monday Night Football is being brought to you by Lay's Potato Chips,
10:06the proud sponsors of the opening video with Bon Jovi.
10:09Bet you can't eat just one.
10:11By Ford and your Ford dealer. Have you driven a Ford lately?
10:14By Budweiser. Fresh, pure, natural. Proud to be your bud.
10:18And by Apple, the creators of Newton.
10:23Here are the Redskins, offensively for the first time in 1993.
10:26They begin with a 3-0 win.
10:291993, they begin with a 2-back set.
10:32Beiner and Mitchell behind Mark Rippon.
10:37And a flag as the Cowboys appear to jump.
10:40Mitchell takes it out to the 9.
10:42Leon Lett came across the line.
10:44Jerry Mark Bright will tell us if he was induced or whether it's 5 yards against Dallas.
10:50Well, it was a serious head bob by Mark Rippon.
10:55Offside, number 78, defense.
10:585-yard penalty. First down.
11:01It'll be first and 5. Let's take a look at this Redskin offense.
11:04And they're going to use more 2-back this year than ever.
11:07Mark Rippon, great year in 91, off year in 92, had a fine preseason.
11:14And we'll take a look at the rest after the play.
11:16First down and 5 from the 11. 11-15 the play.
11:19First quarter, no score.
11:23And on a draw, Brian Mitchell.
11:26Fights his way close to a first down. Remember, he needed only 5.
11:31Jones makes the tackle. Beiner and Mitchell in the 2-back set.
11:34Now, Ricky Sanders becomes their ace receiver with McGee on the other side.
11:38Monk on the bench to start. Middleton is the tight end.
11:41Ellen Wannebe in place of the injured Lachey, who's gone for the season
11:45with Brown, McKenzie, Schlereth, and Simmons, the interior 5.
11:49And as Dan mentioned, the interesting matchup on that left side,
11:52Ellen Wannebe against Haley and company.
11:55On 1st and 10, a little swing pass to Brian Mitchell, and he goes nowhere.
11:59Ken Morton, coming off a terrific Super Bowl,
12:03makes the tackle just back of the line of scrimmage.
12:06Defensively now, Dallas, number 1 last year.
12:10They rotate along the front with Colbert, Jones, Lead, and Haley, the starters.
12:14Then the 3 linebackers are back.
12:17Dickson, Edwards, Robert Jones in his 2nd year in the middle,
12:20and Ken Norton really coming into his own.
12:23Kevin Smith and Brown on the corners.
12:25Washington and Everett are the safeties.
12:28Art Monk is in the game. He's their number 3 receiver.
12:31He lines up stack to the left on 2nd and 12.
12:34It's a dump off to Mitchell, and he takes it to the 20-yard line,
12:37where it will be 3rd down and 7.
12:40Robert Jones makes the hit.
12:44Richie Pettibone has never been a head coach until now,
12:48and he finally gets the job at age 55.
12:51And the one he really wanted.
12:53That had been considered by New Orleans and the Bears,
12:56and I think he just feels he was so fortunate he stayed around this long,
12:59the job that he really wanted, the Washington Redskins,
13:02when Joe Gibbs stepped down last winter.
13:059.30 to go. Opening quarter, 3rd and 7.
13:10Rippon doing some adjusting. The play clock is down to 3.
13:15They need 7, and Rippon throws.
13:18It's Monk, but he cannot make the catch.
13:21Standing on the boundary, and it's 4th down.
13:24Covering on the play was Kenneth Gant.
13:30And so the Redskins will be forced to kick,
13:33and we'll take another look at Kelly Goodburn.
13:35They went out and spent a 3rd round draft choice on Ed Bunn,
13:38and when you spend a 3rd rounder on a punter,
13:40you want him to win the job, but he didn't.
13:42All it did was inspire Goodburn,
13:44and he'll be punting in the direction of Kevin Williams.
13:55Wobbly kick. Very poor kick.
13:58And it's out of bounds in Washington territory,
14:03and they will mark it out at the 44.
14:05It's a 24-yard kick.
14:08Ed Bunn's chuckling now.
14:19On this pleasant Labor Day night in the nation's capital,
14:22the Goodyear Blimp stars and stripes,
14:25providing the Phoenix.
14:27Always a great scene, RFK Stadium opening night,
14:30Dallas and Washington, one of the league's great rivalries.
14:33No score, 9-10 to play, first quarter.
14:36Dallas at the Washington 44.
14:38Derrick Lessig swings to the outside and picks up 3.
14:41Out of bounds at the 41-yard line,
14:44led by Nate Newton's block.
14:46Never has 303 pounds move so quickly.
14:49Big Nate Newton pulling out from his left guard position.
14:53A pro ball football player,
14:55and a guy who periodically throughout his career
14:59has battled a weight problem and seemingly
15:02has convinced everybody that, hey, I'm just big,
15:04and I can play big.
15:06And as long as you play like you play, Nate,
15:08you can weigh whatever you want to weigh.
15:10A good, solid football player.
15:12He and Stepnowski, each going to the Pro Bowl last year.
15:16Second and seven.
15:18Aikman on the deep drop with good protection,
15:20finds the wide open Irvin,
15:22and he's tackled by A.J. Johnson,
15:24about a yard and a half shy of the first down
15:27at the 37-yard line.
15:30When the Dallas Cowboys were taken over by Jimmy Johnson,
15:34their offensive line was really
15:36the weakest part of their ball club.
15:38And now they've evolved into having
15:40Newton and Stepnowski as pro bowlers.
15:42Eric Williams, number 79, the right tackle,
15:45will probably be a pro bowler this year.
15:47He has really blossomed.
15:49And 2 and A, and Desik and Gogan give them
15:53one of the strongest offensive lines in the entire league.
15:56Been a reversal that has matched the rest of the team.
15:59Third and a short 2, and Aikman will shake it through the air,
16:03and his pass is dropped by Irvin,
16:05who gets double covered by A.J. Johnson and Brad Edwards
16:09and popped as the ball got there.
16:11The preseason's over, Frank.
16:13Oh, boy, Aikman trying to slip it into the slot
16:16between A.J. Johnson and the safety who was coming over.
16:19And you just wonder, on a third down
16:22and a yard and a half or two,
16:24would not Emmitt Smith have been given that call?
16:26You can almost assure that.
16:28He averages 4'9 against the Redskins,
16:30but they felt they had to go up on top.
16:32They went to their other superstar, Michael Irving,
16:34good coverage by the Redskins.
16:36And, Frank, the other part of your question is,
16:38if Emmitt Smith is in the game, is Brad Edwards,
16:40who came from inside to make that hit,
16:42closer to the line of scrimmage?
16:44His fourth down and 2, and Aikman came up to the line of scrimmage
16:47and took a timeout because the play clock was down to 2.
16:517.56 remaining in the first quarter.
16:54No score.
17:01Well, Jimmy Johnson has his first big strategic decision of the season.
17:05Fourth down, a short two.
17:07The ball is at the Washington 36.
17:09So you can either punt, opt for a 53-yard field goal attempt,
17:12or go for it, and he's going to go for it.
17:15Derek Lastic, the sole back.
17:17That's Harper in motion, and Aikman to throw.
17:20And he dunks it off to Lastic.
17:22Lastic able to avoid one tackle, and with a second effort,
17:25he gets the ball to the 35-yard line, but short of the first down.
17:33Al Boyd-Mayes missed him.
17:36And he almost was able to pick up the first,
17:39but misses by less than a yard.
17:41Yeah, but Al Boyd-Mayes made Derek Lastic do what he didn't want to do,
17:44break it back to the inside.
17:46He had to move to the inside.
17:48It was so quick.
17:50It closed in on the young rookie from Alabama.
17:52Now here's Al Boyd missing right there,
17:54but that means that Lastic had to bring it back inside
17:57by the time he recovered Darryl Green, but his great speed was there.
18:01He almost got it, and quite a statement by Johnson
18:04about what he thinks about his rookie going to him on fourth down.
18:08From the 35-yard line, here's Rippon.
18:11And Rippon's going to go deep.
18:12Rippon looking for McGee, but overthrows him by about seven yards,
18:15and he was sandwiched anyway.
18:17And the pressure that time put on by Tony Tolbert.
18:20That was a good overthrow, too.
18:22He wanted to go McGee all the way.
18:24He wanted him deep.
18:25He didn't have time, had to move around.
18:27He just threw that away.
18:29McGee came over from Cincinnati.
18:33You can forget about the posse.
18:34Gary Clark is now in Phoenix.
18:36Art Monk is a sub.
18:39And Richie Pettibone has made Ricky Sanders,
18:42who was number three in the old posse, their number one guy,
18:45and number 83 really has to step it up this year.
18:50That's Mitchell in motion, leaving nobody in the backfield,
18:52and the pass is caught up at the 36-yard line
18:55by Ernest Biner for a minimal gain.
18:58It'll be third and nine, Dixon Edwards, the linebacker, making the tackle.
19:03Boy, and you can really see the speed of the Dallas Cowboys.
19:07Jimmy Johnson likes speed.
19:09He likes more speed and more speed than that.
19:11He doesn't care so much about the size.
19:13The Dallas Cowboys, with only one linebacker, over 240 pounds, he wants speed.
19:17And you saw it there on kind of a screen out there in the flat,
19:21and the Cowboys reacted to it so quickly.
19:24Watch Haley on this one.
19:25L-O-N-A-B kind of tackled him last time.
19:28Thicker, some hostility here.
19:29Third and nine.
19:30They've got the safety, the special teamer Bill Bates
19:33playing in the linebacking spot and dropping back into coverage.
19:37And Rippon's going deep, and this one is overthrown.
19:40And again, the coverage was very good on Tim McGee.
19:43Larry Brown was with him step for step, and there's a flag down.
19:49And a conference at the 37-yard line near the line of Skirmish.
19:52The penalty is against Washington.
19:56Dallas can decline it, 6.52 to go in a scoreless first quarter.
20:01And the Redskins will be forced to punt for the second time.
20:03Here's Mark Bright.
20:04Pass interference, number 81, offense.
20:08Penalty is declined, fourth down.
20:11Dwight Monk.
20:14And if you were watching the pass protection last time,
20:16you saw where the Redskins elected to keep one of their receivers in.
20:20A tight end stayed in to double-team Charles Haley.
20:23So even though Haley doesn't get to the quarterback,
20:25he has an impact on the passing game
20:27by keeping an eligible receiver in the backfield.
20:30Here's Goodburn to punt to the rookie Kevin Williams.
20:32Line of Skirmish is the 37, and this is a far better kick.
20:35His last one was 25 yards.
20:37This one is fumbled at the 17-yard line.
20:40And the Washington Redskins with Pat Eilers
20:43has become a special teams maven and maniac in preseason coming up with it.
20:49But Johnny Thomas.
20:50Yes.
20:51Johnny Thomas, number 41, scared the ball out.
20:55He's the guy that ought to get credit.
20:57When Johnny Thomas goes by Williams, he distracts him.
21:02Watch him come from the right part of your screen.
21:04From the left, actually, moving by the right.
21:07And that is what actually distracts Williams to the point.
21:11And the official said he didn't get close enough.
21:14You're supposed to stay a yard away.
21:16Does he?
21:18Boy, that's a heck of a fake by Johnny Thomas.
21:21Big-time play.
21:24And Washington to try to capitalize on the 16.
21:27The catch is made by the tight end, Ron Middleton.
21:30He's out of bounds at the 15.
21:32It's a gain of two.
21:34Kevin Williams has probably not seen this.
21:37He is a very confident University of Miami player.
21:39He's seen most everything in football, but he got so distracted there,
21:43he lost his concentration and gave up the football.
21:46Well, how do you blame a guy for getting distracted?
21:48I'm sure he thought he was going to be steamrolled from up here.
21:51I thought Thomas was going to run right over the top of him.
21:53Yeah, but after he does it a few times, he knows that man is not going to hit him.
21:57He better hope he doesn't hit him.
21:59Again, a reminder, the preseason is over.
22:02Second and eight.
22:03There's the fake to Mitchell.
22:05And the pass is tipped and nearly picked off at the two.
22:08James Washington should have had the interception as the ball was deflected.
22:13Third down and eight upcoming.
22:16Dixon Edwards, I think, is the man who got his hand on it.
22:19That's almost the equivalent of a receiver dropping a touchdown pass,
22:23a chance to intercept a ball close to your own goal line.
22:27There you see it tipped by Tolbert,
22:29and that's just right in the hands of James Washington.
22:33That's a drop that ends up costing your team points
22:37when they're in the red zone like this.
22:39Third down and eight at the 15-yard line.
22:42That's Monk in motion to the same side as Sanders.
22:46Griffin stepping up, Griffin throwing for Sanders,
22:49and he can't make the catch at the eight-yard line.
22:51He's draped by Gant.
22:53And Washington can't capitalize, at least to the extent of a touchdown.
22:57Instead, they'll bring in Lohmuller for what, for him, should be an easy field goal.
23:02Griffin was looking deep for Tim McGee in the end zone,
23:05and this is the receiver he wanted top of your screen.
23:08That's McGee. He'll break it off working against Larry Brown.
23:11He's saying wide open. Griffin, meanwhile, has given up on him.
23:14He fires it in too hot for it to be handled by Sanders,
23:19and now comes the field goal.
23:2031-yard attempt for Lohmuller, and this one is close and no good
23:26for a guy who's almost automatic.
23:28And everybody in a blue shirt in this stadium is really happy,
23:33none more so than James Washington, who dropped that interception.
23:37Now it's time for our regular feature on what's new in the world of sports science and technology.
23:47Last year, when inside the opponent's 20, and that's where Washington just was,
23:54they were third from last in the league.
23:56Only Seattle and Cleveland worse.
23:58As you can see, the league average is 48.5%.
24:01And again, Washington not only bogs down and doesn't score a touchdown,
24:04they don't get the field goal either.
24:06Dallas gets it at the 20. 6.06 to go. First quarter, no score.
24:11And here is Lastic swinging to the outside, picking up three.
24:15Dallas minus Emmitt Smith.
24:17I talked to Smith on the phone about 10 minutes before the game tonight.
24:20He's in Pensacola, Florida.
24:22He said, I feel weird. Definitely weird.
24:25I shouldn't be sitting here. I'm behind the team 100%.
24:28I think they're going to stalemate for a while.
24:31He does have some bitterness. He said, I promised Jerry Jones I would not negotiate
24:36in the newspapers, and I haven't, and Jerry has.
24:40And that is a well-taken point by Emmitt Smith.
24:44Second down and six at the 24-yard line.
24:48Movement on the right side.
24:50Yeah, you can see Williams rock back.
24:53Well, I know what Emmitt Smith saw in that last play.
24:56He saw his fullback, Daryl Johnson, put down two Washington Redskins
25:00with a lead block for Lastic.
25:03Offense. Fire to the snap. Simulating the start of a play.
25:08Five-yard penalty. Second down.
25:10One thing people should understand about Emmitt Smith, and we've got to know him,
25:14he is a very articulate and very bright fellow,
25:18and not the kind of guy who's going to be molded and twisted
25:22by an agent or outside sources.
25:25He explained his position very articulately tonight,
25:30and there it is over the past two years.
25:32He has been almost the entire rushing offense of the Dallas Cowboys.
25:39Here is Daryl Johnson who gets about two powers a game,
25:42and that's why he doesn't go very far.
25:45Third down.
25:47I'm not sure Emmitt Smith would have gone very far
25:50with that lack of blocking on that particular play.
25:53Of course, one of the biggest problems with this play
25:55is that Daryl Johnson isn't leading the play blocking.
25:58He is a devastating blocker, and he knows what his role is,
26:03and it's to take care of Emmitt Smith.
26:05Tonight, it's to take care of Derrick Lassik and Derrick Gaynor,
26:08the two guys that will carry the ball the majority of the time for Dallas.
26:11An entire year last year, just 61 yards rushing for Johnson.
26:15Third down and 10 from the 20-yard line.
26:18Boy, a man came flying across the line.
26:21Wide, wide open is big play man Alvin Harper.
26:25Touchdown.
26:2880 yards.
26:3080 yards.
26:32A.J. Johnson, for some reason, just let Michael Irvin ride my butt.
26:37Pretty good coverage, huh?
26:40Whether he was down at Dallas-Texas Stadium
26:44where it was a tremendous crowd of 10,000-plus
26:46invited there by Gary Jones to look on.
26:49Well, A.J. Johnson turns him over to Brad Edwards.
26:52Take a look on the outside of your screen
26:55for Danny Copeland, number 26 of safety.
26:58He thinks that he's got him.
27:00Copeland's playing the receiver in the middle,
27:03and that is just a miscommunication between Johnson and Copeland.
27:07And it's impossible to sit here and speculate
27:10which is right and which is wrong.
27:12One of them was wrong, though.
27:14I would say so.
27:16Copeland got locked up, his eyes on Jay Novacek,
27:19a great receiving tight end.
27:21Lynn Elliott, meanwhile, who did not have a good preseason,
27:24blows the extra point.
27:28So 80 goes 80.
27:31Harper gives him 6, 428 to go in the quarter.
27:34Dallas has the lead.
27:41Outside Texas Stadium in Irving, they built a tent.
27:45There's a promotion that's drawing a lot of people
27:48who are watching the game in concert,
27:50and I hope you all have Nielsen books.
27:52Every one of you.
27:54This is something so real.
27:56Many times you see a Richie Pettibone defense
27:58blow a defense like that,
28:00letting Alvin Harper go totally free,
28:03AJ Johnson and Danny Copeland on different pages.
28:07Lynn Elliott sends a line drive through the hands
28:11of Ryan Mitchell, who downs it in the end zone,
28:14and the Skins will take over at the 20-yard line.
28:20Well, and now the worst thing that could happen
28:23has happened to the Redskins.
28:25Here they are playing a wounded football team
28:27without their superstar running back,
28:29and now they're trailing,
28:31and trailing at home,
28:33and the pressure will begin to mount.
28:36The longer they stay behind, the better Dallas does.
28:39The imposed pressure of being the favorite
28:42will begin to mount on the Redskins.
28:45And they have Reggie Brooks,
28:47the Notre Dame rookie in the backfield,
28:49and they love him.
28:51Here's his first NFL caveat.
28:54There's a lot to love there.
28:55Through the middle, he goes for seven.
28:57Ken Norton makes the hit.
28:58One thing we haven't touched on,
29:00Terry Orr is not suited up tonight.
29:02He is the regular starting H-back,
29:04and that has kind of forced the offensive unit
29:06under Rod Dauer, their offensive coordinator,
29:09to use a lot of double setback.
29:11That's the first time we've seen the single setback
29:14with Reggie Brooks, the rookie from Notre Dame,
29:17and they are using Ron Middleton to tie it in.
29:20They did a moment ago as the H-back.
29:23Second down and three, and Reggie Brooks,
29:26I believe, has picked up his first NFL first down.
29:29All he had to do was put the nose of the ball
29:31on the 30-yard line stripe, which he has.
29:34Maryland is in there to make the tackle.
29:36Reggie Brooks and the shaken-up cowboy is Dixon Edwards,
29:39the starting left-side linebacker.
29:41And he took on, I think, Ron Middleton,
29:43who came across in motion,
29:44and he put a shot on Dixon Edwards that was big time.
29:48He's in there as the H-back.
29:50He has played that position, worked at it,
29:52but he is the regular tight end,
29:54but Terry Orr is not available tonight,
29:56and Edwards is limping off.
29:58The second-round draft pick who replaced
30:01Ben C. Smith at that left cornerback.
30:063-16 remaining. We're in the first quarter.
30:09Dallas leads 6-0 on an 80-yard touchdown reception
30:14by Alvin Harper.
30:19Rippon, who is 4-9,
30:22for 6 yards through the air
30:25on first and 10.
30:28Changing the play.
30:29Play clock is down to 4.
30:31His 10th pass is caught by Sanders,
30:34and Ricky Sanders is thrust out of bounds
30:37at the 34-yard line by Kevin Smith
30:40after a pickup of 4.
30:43Smith is a good example of
30:46how well this Cowboys secondary tackles.
30:48I'm not sure there's a team in the National Football League
30:51that does as much live tackling during practice,
30:55both in-season and pre-season,
30:57as do the Dallas Cowboys,
30:58and it's really reflected by how aggressive
31:01their secondary and linebackers are
31:03and how well they execute the open field tackle.
31:05They're very, very good at it.
31:07Edwards is back in the game.
31:09Cowboys in their base 4-3.
31:11Here's Reggie Brooks,
31:13and Reggie takes it out to the 40-yard line,
31:16and that's very close to a first down.
31:18Robert Jones and Tony Tolbert in on the hit.
31:21That's good, strong running by Reggie Brooks.
31:24He gained over 1,300 yards as a senior at Notre Dame,
31:27a good athlete, we know that,
31:29because he started out as a defensive back,
31:31then he went to tailback, back to defensive back,
31:33finally as a senior, had great numbers,
31:36averaged over 8 yards a carry,
31:38and Richie Pettibone was very open about it.
31:41He says he can become a great one.
31:43And it's still a formidable group of offensive linemen
31:47that he's running behind.
31:49Brown, McKenzie, Schlereth, and Simmons,
31:52along with Owen Eby.
31:54This is still a quality group in Washington.
31:57Brooks has picked up back-to-back first downs.
31:59I know why you remember him, Frank.
32:01All he did against USC last year was gain 227 yards.
32:04I was gonna bring it up.
32:06Say, that's impressive against Bakersfield High School.
32:09There's Jim Hannifin, the Redskins offensive line coach.
32:12Think he's into the game?
32:14His boys are out there.
32:16Yeah.
32:17Dan's old coach.
32:19First down at the 40-yard line.
32:21Brooks again, and this time he's wrapped up
32:23back in the line of scrimmage.
32:25He can't get on track.
32:27Russell Merrill has slowed him down,
32:29and Tony Tolbert finished him off.
32:31145 to go, opening quarter, 6-0 Cowboys.
32:34Dan was talking about Redskins' offensive line,
32:38the new hog, so to speak, still being very formidable,
32:41but they're going against the number-one defense
32:44against the rush last year.
32:46Haley and Lett and Jones and Tolbert.
32:48Casillas comes in, and Merrill may rotate
32:51that defensive lineman all the time,
32:53keeping it fresh.
32:54They're all good size, but more than anything,
32:56they are quick.
32:58Second and 10 in the 40.
32:59Brooks on a draw.
33:00Nothing happening there,
33:02except he does turn a loss into a gain.
33:05Nothing happening, and he was the only guy
33:07who said, you want to bet?
33:09He spun right out of Tony Tolbert.
33:12The line of scrimmage.
33:13Tony came down, had him.
33:15Brooks spun away from him.
33:16Good, strong running.
33:19And a big hand from the RFK Partisans.
33:21They really appreciate it.
33:23There's Elowan Eby and Haley,
33:25and Haley gets underneath and gets the leverage.
33:27Haley gets the first hit, but look,
33:29there's Tolbert, 92, and he wraps up Brooks,
33:33and Brooks takes Tolbert, who, keep in mind,
33:36is 6'6", 265.
33:38He took him at least 5 yards.
33:40Third and 5 at the 45-yard line.
33:43Look out.
33:44Pressure on Rippon.
33:45Gets it off to Beiner.
33:46Beiner slips the tackle, takes it to the 49,
33:49and that's a first down.
33:52Good read by Rippon.
33:54And a couple second efforts by the Redskins, Frank.
33:56Rippon looking downfield, looking for Sanders
33:59over on the left side.
34:00He knew exactly where Beiner was going to be.
34:02Beiner a good receiver out of the backfield
34:04and expected to carry a big load tonight.
34:07With Terry Orr not available at HVAC,
34:08he'll play there also.
34:09Look, Rippon reads to the left,
34:11comes back to Beiner, and Beiner breaks the tackle
34:14and picks up the first down.
34:17And that is the end of the first quarter in Washington.
34:20Dallas 6 and the Redskins nothing.
34:22Back we come to RFK
34:24after this commercial message and a word
34:26from our ABC station.
34:29Some great college football Saturday.
34:31In fact, the tripleheader begins noon,
34:33Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific, Notre Dame, Michigan.
34:36Then those games, headlined by USC Penn State
34:38at 3.30 Eastern, Washington, Ohio State at night,
34:418 o'clock this Saturday.
34:43Beiner and Brooks are in the backfield,
34:45start the second quarter, 1st and 10 of Washington,
34:47and they give it to Brooks
34:49and the rookie from Notre Dame
34:51for a 15-yard pickup to the 34-yard line
34:54to start the night.
34:56A 34-yard line to start the second quarter.
35:03Good slashing run over the right side.
35:05Brooks was a sprinter in high school back in Oklahoma.
35:09100 meters, 200 meters.
35:11He saw the acceleration then.
35:13He had a little gap and just kicked it into another gear.
35:16Gets a good block over the right side from Simmons.
35:19With a quick draw play.
35:21Just spins away from one linebacker.
35:24Gets the first down.
35:25Good, strong running.
35:26Cowboys have flipped Charles Haley.
35:28He's playing left defensive end now.
35:311st and 10 with 3 wide receivers,
35:33and the sole setback is Brooks.
35:35And the thing about Brooks, they loved him so much
35:38that Richie Pettibone indicated last night
35:40when preseason started,
35:42he wanted Brian Mitchell to be the featured back,
35:44but Brooks has come on,
35:46and the only reason he didn't start tonight is
35:48he's a rookie, it's the first game,
35:50it's Dallas, it's Monday Night Football,
35:53but it didn't take them long to get in,
35:54and it may take them even longer to get them out of there.
35:56These youngsters, particularly at Notre Dame
35:58and places like Alabama,
36:00the lights might bother them for a couple of plays,
36:02but once they get hit, once they make contact, forget it.
36:05They can belong in there just like any other player,
36:07any veteran player.
36:082nd and 3 at the 26, 6-0 Dallas.
36:13Dallas shows clutch and rip and changes.
36:17Quick flip, McGee.
36:20And McGee, the ex-Cincinnati Bengal
36:22with a new home in Washington,
36:23picks up the first down,
36:24one of the bounds of the 20-yard line by Larry Brown.
36:27Good read by Rippon, and a slow ride down.
36:29Dallas very seldom flips it,
36:31and they don't disguise it very much.
36:34And Rippon came up to the line of scrimmage,
36:37knew he was going to have single coverage,
36:39changed the play, got it off before the 42nd clock,
36:42and right now he's in a hurry
36:44because the 42nd clock is ticking down.
36:46That 5-second difference doesn't sound like
36:48all that much, but it has really caused a problem,
36:51and you talk to coaches like we do during the preseason,
36:53we've yet to find one that's in favor of it.
36:55There's a problem.
36:56He couldn't change his play now if he wanted to.
36:58To say nothing of the analysts in the booth.
37:01Here's Reggie Brooks.
37:03This team does give us 5 seconds
37:06of quality time together.
37:09Less.
37:13Those 5 seconds are important.
37:15You never know how you could finish off
37:17a wonderful point,
37:18and you just don't have the time to do it.
37:20Or hang yourself.
37:21Long drive for Washington.
37:23With 12.40 to go first half,
37:25RFK, Al Michaels, Frank Gifford, Dan Beardorf,
37:28a 24-season beginning in Washington.
37:3265 yards thus far on a drive
37:35on which this is play number 12,
37:37second and 6.
37:38At the 16-yard line,
37:40they take an end around to Sanders,
37:42and then Rippon throws incomplete,
37:45intended for Beiner at the 5-yard line.
37:48Good coverage on the play by Kevin Smith.
37:50It'll be third down and 6.
37:52Well, two things there are noteworthy.
37:54One, Mark Rippon, not the most agile of quarterbacks,
37:57makes Charles Haley miss him clean,
38:00and that was brilliant coverage by Kevin Smith.
38:03Locked up man on man.
38:05Haley doesn't normally let a quarterback like Rippon get away.
38:09Rippon not the quickest in the world.
38:11I'm sorry, that's Tony Tolbert, not Haley.
38:14Kevin Smith coming up to play,
38:15and a good reaction by the secondary.
38:17Yeah, I want to correct myself.
38:19That was Tony Tolbert, 92, not 94.
38:22Third down and 6.
38:24Monk was in motion.
38:26Rippon scores!
38:27Sanders, touchdown!
38:38Dallas in that soft zone,
38:40and Sanders and Rippon
38:42splitting the quarterback and the safety.
38:45I think it's almost identical
38:47to what happened to Washington when Harper scored.
38:50Kevin Smith appeared to be confused
38:52as to whether it was man or zone.
38:56Take a look at it again.
38:57Rippon looking Sanders all the way.
39:00Kevin Smith not dropping deep enough on that zone.
39:06Everett couldn't get over,
39:08and the difference in the game now
39:09is Lowe Miller's extra point after that 13-play drive.
39:1212-13 to go in the first half.
39:15Washington 7, Dallas 6.
39:23ABC's Monday Night Football
39:25is being brought to you by Jeep and Eagle,
39:27a division of the Chrysler Corporation,
39:29and by Anheuser-Busch,
39:30who proudly brings you family talk.
39:32Let's stop underage drinking before it starts.
39:39Washington Monument, the capital,
39:41and into RFK Stadium,
39:42where the Redskins kick off.
39:44On top, 7-6.
39:48Williams, who fumbled that putt
39:50earlier from the 9-yard line,
39:52swings to the outside,
39:53flag goes down,
39:54tackled by E.J. Johnson
39:56up at the 19-yard line.
40:00Jerry Mark Wright is the ref.
40:04Kevin Williams perhaps making another rookie mistake,
40:06trying to sprint that east and west
40:09instead of north and south,
40:10and he lost the putt race.
40:14Here he comes.
40:16Robert Jones.
40:20There it is right there.
40:21There's the face mask,
40:22number 47, A.J. Johnson,
40:24getting his hand in there.
40:26Number 51, out of return,
40:28half the distance to the goal,
40:30first down.
40:31Ken Norton was holding.
40:37There's all the hold,
40:38and face mask left without a flag.
40:4512-0-3, remaining in the first half.
40:51The Dallas Cowboys playing as an underdog
40:54for maybe the only time all season tonight.
40:57This is the only game
40:58they do not figure they favored,
40:59and certainly Bennett Smith comes back.
41:01And on first down,
41:02Alvin Harper makes the catch
41:04up at the 17.
41:06When you think about it,
41:07if Dallas wins tonight's game,
41:09they will have won a game
41:10without Emmitt Smith in Washington.
41:14And as I say,
41:15the only game in which they figure
41:16to go in is the underdog this season.
41:19Well, if they show they're able to win
41:21without Emmitt Smith, you're right.
41:23That will guarantee the fact
41:24they won't be an underdog anymore
41:25the rest of the game.
41:27They're a ways away from doing that.
41:34Second down and one.
41:37And on a delay, this is Derek Lasik.
41:41Lasik is out of Laughlin County, New York,
41:43about 50 miles from New York City.
41:45Was recruited by Alabama
41:46when Bill Curry was there.
41:48Had some family in Montgomery.
41:50Almost left Alabama after his freshman year
41:52and really didn't play a lot
41:53until he was a senior.
41:54He was behind Saran, Stacy, and others.
41:56And then finally came into his own last year.
41:58And he is only one of four rookies ever
42:01to start for a defending Super Bowl champion.
42:03There are the others.
42:04And Lasik is the first running back.
42:06Interesting, Darryl Green was the last.
42:08That's why for Washington,
42:09after they won the Super Bowl,
42:10Green's still playing, of course, at corner.
42:14First down at the 20-yard line.
42:16Aikman, pump fakes, going deep.
42:18And Irvin with contact with Green.
42:20No flag.
42:21Incidental bumping and incomplete.
42:23Well, the reason he's the first running back
42:25to start for a defending Super Bowl champion
42:27is it's pretty hard to win the Super Bowl
42:29without a quality running back.
42:32It just happened to be fate
42:34that the quality running back
42:35that propelled the Cowboys to the Super Bowl last year
42:38is sitting in Pensacola, Florida.
42:41One thing we have not seen yet from the Cowboys,
42:43and that is their tight end, Jay Novacek.
42:4768 receptions a year ago.
42:48He makes it so easy for Harper and Irvin on the outside
42:52because he's like a wide receiver
42:54that plays tight end, number 84, Jay Novacek.
42:58He lines up on the right side.
43:00Here is Lasek.
43:01Lasek is able to find a bit of a hole
43:04and exploit it for a 5-yard gain.
43:08Out to the 26-yard line,
43:09it'll be third down and five.
43:11Monte Coleman and Brad Edwards converge on the hit.
43:14Lasek has now carried seven times for 28 yards.
43:18He came in there tonight also with a very sore knee.
43:21Hurt his knee last week against the Bears.
43:24Tough youngster.
43:25Fourth-round draft pick, as we mentioned,
43:27gets a little bit of a breather.
43:30They bring in Kevin Williams.
43:32This is what they've been doing in third down tonight.
43:34They've been lining up Johnston in the backfield,
43:36going to the wide outset.
43:38They have to get to the 31.
43:40Here comes a Redskins glitch.
43:41The Cowboys do a beautiful job of picking it up,
43:43and Novacek makes his first catch of the season
43:45up at the 33-yard line for a first down.
43:49And with those four wide receivers in there,
43:51and Novacek, the flags come in late.
43:54Very late.
43:55Novacek was picked up by linebackers
43:57instead of the strong safety,
43:59who was over helping on the outside against Irvin.
44:02He holds on to the ball.
44:03Super catch by Novacek.
44:06And he has wonderful hands,
44:086'4 and 230 pounds like Brent Jones of the 49ers.
44:11He puts so much pressure on the defense.
44:13You have to cover him man for man with a defensive back.
44:16Illegal substitution foul.
44:1812 men on the field.
44:20Defense penalties declined.
44:22First down.
44:24It's really embarrassing to have 12 men on the field
44:26and still allow the opposition to complete a pass
44:29for the first down.
44:31Once again, a defensive error.
44:33We saw one earlier that allowed Alvin Harper
44:35to score from 80 yards out.
44:43Here's the penalty from the right part of the screen
44:45from the bottom part.
44:46And there's the 12th man.
44:48Wasn't hard to find, was he?
44:50First down, Dallas, up at the 34-yard line.
44:54Here's Lassik again.
44:56And Lassik out past the 40.
44:58Derrick Lassik to the 42-yard line.
45:00He's tackled by Monte Coleman.
45:02That's a gain of, let's call it 8.
45:04And that is awesome blocking by the Cowboy offensive line.
45:08They just obliterated the Redskins on that side of the ball.
45:12And Lassik wasn't even contested.
45:14Take a look at the blocking on the right side here
45:16by Gogan and Williams.
45:17Look at that whole great lead block by Johnston.
45:22There is a case, though, Frank, where Lassik
45:24and his tendencies to go laterally
45:26might have cost him some yardage right there.
45:28He might have been better served by slicing right on upfield.
45:34Second and a short two, and we've got whistles.
45:38No play.
45:46You know, there must have been contact in there
45:48either that or a false start.
45:49One or the other.
45:51False start.
45:52Number 61.
45:54Right over the snap.
45:56Five-yard penalty.
45:57Second down.
46:00Nate Newton.
46:04Turns the second and two into a second and seven
46:07with 8.44 to go in the half.
46:087.6.
46:10Redskins.
46:11Nate's the second guy in.
46:12Oh yeah, you see him rise up.
46:14His hand doesn't come off the ground,
46:16but he raised up in his haunches,
46:18and that's enough of a move to get you slapped
46:20with the false start.
46:24Second and seven from the Dallas 37-yard line.
46:28Aikman hitting Harper, and that's a first down.
46:31He lost the football at the Washington 47.
46:34Darrell Green, who can fly, comes up with it.
46:37Green to the outside.
46:41And finally tackled by Johnston.
46:45You talk about being in the right place
46:47at the right time.
46:48There's a flag upfield back at the 45.
46:51Darrell Green was the guy who had the coverage
46:53on Helton Harper to begin with.
46:55He was way too loose on Harper.
46:57Harper catches the pass easily,
46:59and then it comes loose.
47:01A very fortunate bounce for Darrell.
47:03Now let's see if Washington gets to keep the ball.
47:11And you're right.
47:12Darrell is a dangerous man once he's in the open.
47:15Holding number 58, Washington,
47:19after the recovery, on the return,
47:2210-yard penalty, first down, Washington.
47:26That's Carl Banks, the former Giant.
47:28The key there, it came after possession
47:31was already Washington.
47:32See, Darrell's way too loose on Harper,
47:35and there it comes.
47:37I think they were releasing him to the inside man.
47:40They're hoping the safety man picked him up.
47:42Aikman and Harper both read it at the same time,
47:45and Aikman fired it in.
47:46He fumbles the ball, and you're right.
47:48Darrell Green, right place at the right time.
47:50Give Kurt Gouveia credit.
47:51He's the guy who made the hit on Harper
47:54and forced the ball out.
47:56Check this out.
47:57He's number 54.
47:58There he comes, and he puts his left hand
48:00right on the football and pops it out.
48:03There's a middle linebacker
48:04who makes a lot of big plays.
48:07Kurt Gouveia creates the fumble.
48:09Washington has it at the 45-yard line.
48:11Five-man cowboy front, and Ken Norton
48:14had an easy pick and dropped it.
48:18Now, that ball had a little sauce on it
48:20when it got to Norton.
48:21That's an easy pick, Al.
48:22I'd like to know where you won it.
48:24That baby had a little taco sauce on it
48:26when it got to him.
48:27That would have been helmet high.
48:28He would have been eating it.
48:31It did hit him in the hands.
48:33Try it by speeding it up, though.
48:36Craig's on your side, our director.
48:39It did hit him in the hands,
48:41but that baby had some jalapenos
48:43strapped to it.
48:45Mitchell is the tailback.
48:47Middleton leads the way,
48:49and he takes it up to the 47-yard line.
48:51Russell Merrill makes the tackle.
48:59RFK from straight above.
49:03Perfect night to play.
49:05It's a warm night, but it's not hot.
49:06Low humidity.
49:08It's the Cowboys and the Redskins at RFK.
49:11Every football Sunday or Monday
49:13should be just like this.
49:15This is perfect.
49:18Third and seven at the 48-yard line.
49:28Griffin throws it out to Sanders,
49:31and there's a flag down.
49:34Ricky, for the moment, had the first down.
49:37Griffin must be changing
49:39at least 40% of his calls tonight.
49:41Highly unusual against Dallas.
49:42They don't show you a lot of different things.
49:45He's seeing something different.
49:47Full start.
49:48Number 83 simulating the snap.
49:51The foul was called prior to the snap.
49:53The play does not count.
49:55Five-yard penalty.
49:56Third down.
49:58How does a wide receiver simulate the snap?
50:00I think he meant Raleigh McKenzie,
50:02the center of 63.
50:05He said 83, and you're right.
50:07He had to be referring to the center.
50:09He's the only one, I would assume,
50:10who can simulate a snap.
50:12He does look like a guilty simulator.
50:14Please reset the game clock to 729.
50:18729 on the game.
50:21Somebody pointed.
50:23I think it was the left guard, Ray Brown.
50:25No, yeah.
50:26Eloin Eby, I think the left tackle
50:28is the one who's pointing,
50:29but that's not simulating a snap.
50:31You're allowed to point,
50:32and I certainly didn't see any movement by McKenzie.
50:38Well, they're closer than we were.
50:42Doesn't mean they're right, no.
50:44Third down and 12 at the 43-yard line.
50:47Ripping this change in again.
50:51On a delay.
50:52This is Ernest Beiner, the venerable one,
50:54who gained 998 yards last season.
50:57Gets it up to the 47.
51:00Gant and Haley make the hit,
51:02and Washington will punt.
51:04Week two next week.
51:05Next Monday, we go to Cleveland.
51:08The 49ers coming off their win yesterday
51:11against Pittsburgh.
51:12Steve Young is back and healthy,
51:13and we'll talk to him at halftime tonight.
51:15In fact, against the Browns,
51:17who fell behind 14 to nothing
51:18and then scored 27 consecutive points
51:20to beat Cincinnati 27-14.
51:2349ers-Browns next Monday night.
51:27Here's Goodburn's punt.
51:29And, well, when you're a rookie,
51:31you make the catch inside the 5.
51:33Otherwise, you don't.
51:34There's a flag down.
51:35He takes it back to the 15.
51:4048-yard kick, 10-yard return.
51:43Penalty marker.
51:44And that will almost automatically warrant you
51:47a heart-to-heart chat with Mr. Johnson
51:49when you get over to the sideline.
51:53It's funny.
51:54We keep saying, when you're a rookie,
51:55but, you know, in college,
51:56they teach you the same thing, basically.
51:58He just lost track of where he was.
52:00Holding a number 37 receiving team
52:04while the kick was in the air.
52:06It's a post-possession foul.
52:08The penalty is from the end of the run.
52:10Half the distance to the goal.
52:12First down, timeout.
52:15Thank you, Jerry.
52:16He did everything to lead us to a commercial.
52:19I'll do that.
52:20We'll be back.
52:21We'll be right back.
