00:00And by Splitfire, the patented performance spark plug.
00:08The MetLife Blimp Snoopy 2 is cruising the skies above Oakland, California.
00:14Very clear skies now.
00:16It's foggy this morning.
00:17The MetLife Blimp contains 70,000 cubic feet of helium.
00:22Measures almost 50 yards of weight.
00:26Nice to have him with us.
00:31Ismael, flag on the play.
00:35From across the field.
00:36Yeah, the official threw it once and then he went in and picked it up and he threw it again to get it closer to the players because he was the he was a deep guy.
00:45Ron Botchan.
00:47Matter of fact, but he saw a holding from about 40 yards away.
00:51It was two penalty flag throws away, at least, and he still didn't get it there.
00:57I remember Ron Botchan when he was a coach.
01:00Number 53 on the return team, 10-yard penalty, first down.
01:05Junior College down in Los Angeles.
01:07And even before that, I remember Ron Botchan when he played.
01:10He played for the Chargers.
01:15That's a big thing.
01:16You know, we talked about Mike White and the Raiders.
01:19Harvey Williams, nothing doing.
01:23Now for our McDonald's game break, let's return to James Brown in Hollywood.
01:27Pat Warren Moon turned 39 yesterday celebrating nicely today here tossing in the Chargers.
01:32Harvey Williams, nothing doing.
01:40Now for our McDonald's game break, let's return to James Brown in Hollywood.
01:44Pat Warren Moon turned 39 yesterday, celebrating nicely today here tossing his second touchdown
01:49of the afternoon, this one to Amp Lee, and the Vikings are leading 17-0 over the Saints
01:55in the second.
01:56Back to Pat Summerall and John Madden.
02:01Back at the sold-out Oakland Coliseum, Raider ball, second at 8, three wide receivers.
02:11Williams, not much.
02:16Godfrey Miles made the stop.
02:19Robert Jones, injured earlier.
02:21You know, the Raiders, I was just going to say, Pat, the Raiders scripted their first
02:2615 plays, you know, like a lot of teams do.
02:29You can see where they had, you know, seven runs and eight passes, and they kind of want
02:34to see how the Cowboys are playing, specifically where Deion is playing and what he's doing,
02:41then set their game plan from there, and part of that game plan they want to include some
02:46no-huddle.
02:47The answer is, right now, they're all playing pretty well.
02:53Here's Hustedler back to throw it.
02:55Delayed blitz.
02:57Tim Brown.
03:02Darren Smith came on a delayed blitz, and he got caught in between.
03:07Brock Marion knocked Tim Brown out of bounds.
03:09Yeah, that was one of those zone blitzes where they bring the defensive tackle out.
03:15You'll see right here, they take the tackle and they start him rushing, and then they
03:20bring him back.
03:21In fact, they brought both tackles out.
03:23They got them deep, so that's where you can rush and still play zone.
03:28And here's the no-huddle.
03:31Napoleon Kaufman is deep, and he gets the carry.
03:37It gets a couple.
03:39Hervin McCormick is playing in the middle now in place of Chad Hennings.
03:44And that was Hervin McCormick that dropped out of there in that last play with Russell Maryland.
03:49That's a thing we're seeing a lot in the National Football League now where it used to be when
03:54you blitz or you bring more than four, you had to play man-to-man.
03:58Now you can bring more than four and drop the linemen out and still play zone.
04:03So they're calling those zone blitzes.
04:07Second down, about eight.
04:15Here's Hustedler.
04:18Complete to Andrew Glover.
04:21The protection was good.
04:22Gave Hustedler a chance to look around.
04:25Yeah, and if you're going to have good protection, you got to block that guy, Charles Haley.
04:30You see, that's Robert Jenkins on him, but the big thing is the help from the running back,
04:35Napoleon Kaufman.
04:36See, that's what they want to do.
04:38They want to chip him.
04:39Now Haley is working, working, working there against Jenkins, and here comes Napoleon Kaufman,
04:46and he unloaded against Haley.
04:48If that's a chip, I'd hate to see a chop.
04:52That's Kaufman, and he almost broke it.
04:58Inside the 30 down to about the 28, the last man, Larry Brown, made the stop.
05:05This is an exciting football player, and he's not just a roll guy either.
05:10He's not one of those guys you just put in on third down.
05:13He's a Raiders number one draft choice this year, and he's a complete package.
05:18The play before, we saw him block Charles Haley,
05:21and that play we saw him run off tackle like a power running back.
05:25Run through some tackles.
05:27And we know that he can run around a lot of tackles.
05:30First of ten Raiders, Hustedler back to Kaufman again, and again he's around the corner,
05:36and spinning inside the 20 to about the 17, stopped by Darren Smith.
05:41And this is a big guy.
05:42You know, you look at Napoleon Kaufman, he's only 5'9", 180.
05:45You're saying, there's not much to him, but look at those arms.
05:49See those arms and the legs.
05:50I mean, he is a short guy, but he is a powerful man.
05:54He is well built, and he knows how to use his body and his power.
06:00He's something.
06:01I mean, he's not a role player.
06:03I mean, he plays first down, second down, third down, run inside, outside.
06:07A great change of pace with Harvey Williams.
06:10First and ten Oakland.
06:16Derek Finner.
06:20Stopped by Darren Smith.
06:23Now you can see Robert Jenkins, the left tackle, starting to have trouble with that knee.
06:27He has bad knees.
06:29He starts every week, but he can only play until the knees don't allow him anymore.
06:34Maybe it's a quarter, maybe it's two quarters, maybe it's three quarters.
06:38He just gets tired.
06:39Yeah, you can just see, he had a hard time getting up when he went down to the ground after that last play.
06:45Second and six.
06:47Kaufman is deep.
06:50Back to Napoleon Kaufman.
06:52He can get around the corner.
06:55Gets down to about the ten, did not get a first down.
06:58Stopped by Alundas Bryce.
07:02Yeah, it's such a great change of pace, because you get Harvey Williams,
07:06and he can run the ball inside or outside, but he's not as fast.
07:09Then you put Napoleon Kaufman in there, and now you've got the speed.
07:15Those two backs together are a heck of a combination.
07:19You know where he's from? He's from Lompoc, California.
07:22That's about halfway between here and Los Angeles.
07:25One of the first places they shot missiles out of, Vandenberg Air Force Base.
07:30He's the coach down in that area.
07:37Napoleon Kaufman again inside the ten.
07:43The Cowboys had a shot at him in the backfield.
07:45He cut back.
07:47Jim Swantz.
07:50Darren Woodson converged to break him down.
07:53And that's where we're talking about Napoleon Kaufman being on every down back.
07:57He's coming out now, but he did his job.
08:01We talk about players and make plays.
08:04We talk about guys that can change momentum.
08:07The Raiders put Napoleon Kaufman in there, and he made plays
08:11and got the momentum back in the Raiders' favor.
08:14Williams has replaced him now. It's fourth and one.
08:17Hostetler says, I don't like what I see, and called a timeout.
08:23That's the Raiders' first. They'll have two left.
08:26That's the Raiders' first. They'll have two left.
08:3014-0 Dallas.
08:36Back at the Oakland Coliseum.
08:38Pat Summerall with John Madden.
08:42He was given a hero's welcome when we arrived this morning.
08:47Deservedly so.
08:49Two tight ends for the Raiders. Fourth and one.
08:52Harvey Williams is deep.
08:54Benner in front of him.
09:05I was going to say that that would have been a great place for a play pass.
09:09I think they would have just walked one in there.
09:11The Cowboys were up there. They were playing that fourth down run.
09:15If you would have just faked a Harvey Williams,
09:17I think it would have been a real easy touchdown.
09:21That's Mike Pipe.
09:23Of course, that's a lot easier for me to say up here
09:26than it was when I was down there in the sideline.
09:29That's one of the reasons you went up here, right?
09:31Although I did like it. I used to have a play.
09:33I knew what the play would be.
09:34I'd call fake, trap, 32, bootleg, left, U-corner.
09:37That's what I would have called.
09:40But then I had Kenny Stabler, you know, bootlegging to the left
09:43and Dave Casper running the corner,
09:45and that wouldn't have been a bad combination.
09:48Would you have called a timeout?
09:50No, I wouldn't have called a timeout.
09:52I would have just automatically called a play.
09:55And Stabler knew that.
09:57I always wanted to save timeouts
10:00until the last two minutes of the half
10:03and the last two minutes of the game.
10:05I'd rather do anything.
10:06I'd rather sometimes take a penalty
10:08than use a timeout before the end of the half
10:11or the end of the game.
10:14Barry Switzer can feel we're talking about momentum
10:17and how the Cowboys got it
10:19and how the Raiders, Napoleon Kaufman,
10:22came in and really changed it.
10:24The Raiders go three wide receivers.
10:32The play looked like almost a busted play,
10:34but it's a touchdown for the Oakland Raiders.
10:39Seven yards away from Harvey Williams.
10:50Harvey Williams right here.
10:52You see him here.
10:53He's the only back in the backfield,
10:55and it's a form of a counter-trade,
10:57but he's on the same side that the counter's gonna come from
11:01because the blocker...
11:02I think it's against the Cowboys.
11:04I mean, was there any taunting?
11:06There's a lot of talk going on in this thing.
11:09What do they call it, trash talk?
11:11Trash talk, yeah.
11:12The officials aren't trash talking.
11:14Leon's down there in the middle of it.
11:21That's sportsman-like conduct, I'm sure.
11:24That's sportsman-like conduct.
11:26On number 25, on a defense.
11:30Will penalize 15 yards on a kickoff.
11:33Touchdown.
11:34There's Al Davis looking on.
11:38Number 25 was Scott Case.
11:42Number 25 was Scott Case.
11:44Yep.
11:47Jager for the extra point.
11:49Gossett holding.
11:53And it's 14-7.
11:55It is a form of the old counter-trade.
11:58Yep, you see he pulls the off-guard and the tight end.
12:02He has to start to the middle, wait for the offside blockers to get there,
12:07and then he just follows them in.
12:09Here's that Neal Smith swing.
12:11Remember Neal Smith, Kansas City Chiefs?
12:14They were teammates at one time.
12:16I have a trivia question.
12:18How many Hall of Fame inductees has Al Davis presented, and who were they?
12:30Deion Deep, but they'll be kicking off from the 45,
12:34so there should be no return, and there isn't.
12:36It's out of the end zone.
12:37You talk about momentum changers and things that you could have done.
12:40That wouldn't have been a bad time for an onside kick
12:44because Scott Case was penalized, so they got 15 yards that go on the kick.
12:49So you're kicking the ball off from the 45,
12:52and even if you tried an onside kick and they got it,
12:55it still wouldn't be terrible field position.
12:58But it didn't look like the Raiders even considered that.
13:01They said, heck with it.
13:02Just kick it away, and we'll just stay where we are
13:05and stay down by seven points because we have plenty of time to work on this one.
13:09This is an all-day sucker between these two.
13:12Yes, it is.
13:14First and ten Dallas from their own 20.
13:17They lead 14-7, 7.50 left in the second quarter.
13:21Darryl Johnston was the man in motion.
13:24Aikman slipped.
13:25Dropped it.
13:27Gets it to Irving.
13:32First down.
13:34Good throw.
13:35Good pattern.
13:37The Affleck trivia question again.
13:39How many Hall of Fame inductees has Al Davis presented, and who were they?
13:45Eight of them.
13:46Lance Allworth, Jim Otto, George Blanda, Willie Brown, Gene Upshaw,
13:52Fred Boletnikoff, who's on the coaching staff, Art Shell, and Ted Hendricks.
13:56And, of course, in addition to that, Al Davis himself is in the Hall of Fame.
14:01And you inducted him, didn't you?
14:04Or presented him.
14:05Presented him, yes.
14:07That's Darryl Johnston.
14:09One-man screen, it looked like.
14:11They even have the moose call here.
14:13Did you hear that?
14:14I didn't think there'd be many Cowboy fans here at the Oakland Coliseum.
14:17There aren't.
14:18When the moose gets a ball, though, they still give that moose call.
14:22You know, last week I was in Dallas, Pat, and I was interviewed by Mrs. Moose.
14:27Mrs. Moose.
14:28Mrs. Moose, yeah.
14:29Darryl Johnston's mother, Mrs. Moose.
14:33And she has like a—
14:35Mama Moose.
14:36Mama Moose.
14:38I don't think she'd like me.
14:40Well, Darryl Johnston's Mama Moose, yeah.
14:43And she has a letter she puts out.
14:45We had an in-depth interview.
14:48Here's Emmett Smith.
14:53And she's really nice.
14:55And then I went outside.
14:56And then as we went outside the locker room, then Mr. Moose was waiting for us.
15:00So Mrs. Moose and Mr. Moose got in the car and they left.
15:04And then Moose the next day thanked me for being there.
15:08I said I enjoyed it.
15:09That was my pleasure being interviewed by Mrs. Moose.
15:13In-depth, huh?
15:14In-depth.
15:15In-depth interview, yeah.
15:16I mean, it was a sit-down, you know, long talk.
15:19She had the questions written out, the answers, and I gave the answers.
15:24I interviewed the real Moose last week.
15:28And he's a nice guy too.
15:30Who's the real Moose?
15:31Well, that's number 48.
15:32Oh, him.
15:34I'm talking about his mother and dad.
15:36Yeah, I knew what you were talking about.
15:38But if it weren't for Mr. and Mrs. Moose, there wouldn't be no real Moose.
15:41I think you're probably right.
15:43Prior to the snap, we got a false start on number 73 offense.
15:47Five-yard penalty.
15:49False start on Larry Allen.
15:53Yeah, here's Larry Allen right here.
15:56He's a second-year guy who's having a heck of a year.
15:59You see, he just got off there a little early.
16:01But he's from Sonoma State.
16:03It's not far.
16:04It's only about 50 miles from here.
16:07And I think that he's turning into one of the best guards in the league.
16:12In fact, if I had to pick one and say who's the best guard in the league,
16:15I might take Larry Allen.
16:17You remember he spent all of last year at tackle.
16:20Here's Emmitt Smith.
16:22And he ran right in behind Larry Allen.
16:25And Larry Allen caused that hole for him.
16:27In fact, he got a couple blocks.
16:29See, this is what alignment does.
16:31You start off.
16:32Here's Larry Allen, number 73, right here.
16:35Now, you start and you get one.
16:37Boom, you help him.
16:38You get that guy to the ground.
16:40Then you come up on the next guy.
16:42And that's the hole.
16:43That started the hole because they got that movement on Chester McLaughlin.
16:47They had to do that first.
16:48Larry Allen did that.
16:50And after he got that done with his left shoulder,
16:52he takes his right shoulder, boom, goes up in the linebacker.
16:57Second down.
17:01Aikman back to throw.
17:04Durbin.
17:05And he'll have his first down.
17:08Terry McDaniel on the coverage.
17:09You know, you're talking about Larry Allen.
17:12Assistant coaches, I don't think, get nearly enough credit.
17:16Go ahead.
17:19Again, I think that Michael Irvin is really working Terry McDaniel out here.
17:24I think he has his number.
17:26He has Terry McDaniel turned about every way you can go.
17:31Michael Irvin knows it.
17:32And more importantly, Troy Aikman knows it
17:35because he was watching Michael Irvin all the way.
17:38They got the first down.
17:40And they give them all to Emmitt Smith.
17:42And he gets only a couple of flag on the play.
17:46Chester McLaughlin made the tackle.
17:48I just started to say I don't think assistant coaches get enough credit.
17:52But the guy who coaches this Dallas offensive line,
17:55I think is one of the best in the business, Hudson Howe.
17:59And I agree with that.
18:00I've known Hudson Hawk for years.
18:03In fact, we were talking yesterday that.
18:06Offside.
18:07Number 93 defense.
18:09Five-yard penalty.
18:11Repeat first down.
18:13That's Jerry Ball.
18:16But Hudson Hawk was coaching up here at Stanford.
18:19John Robinson was coaching with me.
18:21And he got the job at USC.
18:23And Hudson Hawk was interviewed here by John Robinson
18:26to coach with him the next year at USC.
18:29And you're still mad at Robinson.
18:31Yeah, I am for doing that.
18:36At the 23 of Oakland.
18:39And you see, they just took Terry McDaniel over on the other side.
18:44Michael Irvin over on this side now.
18:46Again, working against Terry McDaniel, who's off.
18:49And he just runs it out there.
18:51And it looks like every time Michael Irvin makes a cut,
18:55Terry McDaniel slips.
18:57And you'd think it should be the opposite.
18:59That Michael Irvin, not knowing this field, ought to be the guy that is slipping.
19:03But that's the third or fourth time that Terry McDaniel has slipped in his first half.
19:09With that catch, Michael Irvin just set another new Cowboy record.
19:12Here's Emmitt Smith left side.
19:14And he is hammered.
19:15And the ball came loose, and the Raiders got it.
19:17Anthony Smith.
19:19Whoa, was hurt.
19:20Emmitt Smith was belted.
19:25Anthony Smith was the guy that was at practice Wednesday at the meeting Thursday.
19:29They couldn't find until this morning.
19:31And he comes up with his second big play in this half.
19:36Smith really took a hit.
19:38And the ball came flying out.
19:43Caused by Irvin Lewis.
19:46Here's Emmitt Smith.
19:47You're going to see Derek Hoskins comes in right there,
19:50and he really unloads on Emmitt Smith.
19:54And when he unloaded on him with everything he had,
19:56the ball just jolted right out of there.
19:59And the Raiders take over.
20:01First and ten at their own 13.
20:03Fits his back to Harvey Williams, who slipped and got back up and got about five yards.
20:13Our information is that safety man, Eddie Anderson,
20:17re-aggravated a hamstring pull and will not be back.
20:23And Joe King is in for him, has been in for him.
20:27And again, Derek Hoskins is a strong safety.
20:30The opposite safety from Eddie Anderson, who made that great hit there.
20:34Two tight ends, Williams deep.
20:37Hostetler.
20:39Hit by Hennings.
20:42Just as he let it go.
20:44That might have been a lateral.
20:46I didn't hear a whistle.
20:47I didn't hear a whistle until right then.
20:49I did see the referee throw a flag, but I didn't hear a whistle.
20:52And the only thing that stops play is a whistle.
20:55I think this is a lateral.
20:57I think so, too, because no one blew the whistle.
21:00I mean, they may have to go and talk about this.
21:02This is going to be a conference.
21:04Remember, there's only six officials out there.
21:06One official was injured,
21:08so they're working one man short on the officiating crew.
21:11But no one blew a whistle on that play.
21:15Again, you see where Jeff Hostetler is.
21:18He's on the 10-yard line.
21:20He throws it out there, and if he throws it behind that yard line,
21:24that is a lateral.
21:26And we'll look at it from this angle.
21:28If the ball comes out and he throws it behind,
21:31and he does throw it behind,
21:32that is a lateral, and a lateral can be picked up.
21:36A live ball.
21:38The flag, I think, had to be for intentional grounding.
21:41Yeah, and the flag doesn't stop the play.
21:44No.
21:49After a conference on the field,
21:51there is no intentional grounding.
21:54The ruling is a backward pass and out of bounds.
21:58Third down.
22:00Third down.
22:02So it was a backward pass.
22:04It was a lateral.
22:05Yeah, it was a lateral, but the Cowboys didn't pick it up,
22:09so the ball went out of bounds.
22:11So no one got control of that backward pass or lateral
22:15until the ball got out of bounds or after the ball got out of bounds.
22:19The last person to have control, of course, was Hostetler.
22:23Again, and you're going to see that ball come out.
22:26Now, it's a lateral.
22:27Now, the Cowboys can pick this up if they can get to it
22:30before it gets out of bounds.
22:32Nope, they just knocked it out of bounds.
22:34No one had control before the ball goes out of bounds.
22:37So the ball should be spotted at the point it went out of bounds.
22:41Right.
22:42Raiders ball.
22:44That should be third down.
22:48But they're still in another conference.
22:51Alundas Bryce.
22:54Again, being a rookie, Alundas Bryce,
22:56you wonder if he knows the rule that that is a live ball
22:59and that he could have recovered it.
23:01Tim Brown took off after it.
23:04He knew.
23:05Alundas Bryce looked like he was trying to defend against Tim Brown
23:08rather than go for it himself.
23:11Because, again, if he would have picked that up,
23:13that would have been the Cowboys ball right there.
23:18Well, they've done exactly what you said.
23:22They moved it back to where it went out of bounds,
23:24third and 19 for the Raiders back there.
23:282.53 left to play in the first half.
23:322.50, call it.
23:38Third down.
23:41Long count.
23:42Hostetler in the end zone.
23:44Haley almost had him.
23:46Pass is incomplete.
23:48A flag on the plate.
23:49Deion Sanders with the cover man.
23:51James Jett, the intended receiver.
23:54Haley just missed.
23:56Back in the end zone.
23:59James Jett, of course, the fastest of the Raiders.
24:02Deion Sanders, the fastest of the Cowboys.
24:05That was a track meet going down the sideline.
24:12And it's against Deion.
24:14That'll get him out of the hole.
24:16You see James Jett there.
24:17Deion Sanders has the hand on him right there.
24:20You see the hand on his right arm holding him back.
24:23Deion's left arm.
24:25That's what they call pass interference.
24:28And again, he's getting that hand up there,
24:30getting that hand up there right there.
24:32He has it in again.
24:34I'll tell you, that's touchy,
24:35but that is pass interference by definition.
24:37That's a good call.
24:41First and 10, the Raiders.
24:43Three wide receivers.
24:45They operate from their own 33.
24:51That's Kaufman.
24:53Big hole up the middle.
24:55And Kaufman gets through it in a hurry.
24:58I really like this Napoleon Kaufman
25:00because we saw him make a heck of a block on Charles Haley.
25:04We saw him run to the outside,
25:06and on that play, he just runs this thing right up the middle.
25:09Just watch it.
25:10This isn't going inside or outside or anything.
25:12This is just coming straight up the middle.
25:14He has about five moves while he's doing it,
25:17but he is a quick, powerful little guy.
25:20Well, Mike White was very emphatic last night
25:23when he was talking to us that we don't change our philosophy
25:27just because it's Napoleon Kaufman.
25:29Well, I think when you see 5'9", 180,
25:32you think Dave Mega type guy.
25:34You think Dexter Carter type.
25:36You think Kaufman is not a role player.
25:38He is an every down player.
25:40Look at the arms on that guy.
25:42If you have arms like that, you can play every down.
25:44I'll guarantee you.
25:48I don't know how he gets his shirt on.
25:50Yeah, big old pipes.
25:52Big old pipes.
25:53You got to pull it tight up over those pipes.
25:56Lompoc.
25:58Some people call it Lompoc.
26:00It's Lompoc.
26:02Hostetler.
26:04Back to throw it.
26:06Pass is picked off again.
26:08This is by Brock Marion.
26:09Brock Marion.
26:10I saw the one.
26:11I thought it was Dion.
26:12It's Brock Marion.
26:13I think the Raiders have really expected the Cowboys
26:16to be in a lot of man coverage.
26:18And the Cowboys in this game are going back to more zone.
26:21Even with Dion, letting Dion play some man,
26:25they're also playing some zone.
26:29So Dallas gets the ball back.
26:31And you just see what the zone looks like, Pat.
26:33You can see that they're going to rotate up here on this side.
26:37We can just stop it here.
26:38You see this is the zone.
26:39See, they're rotating here.
26:40Here's the safety.
26:41They're playing this zone.
26:42All these guys are playing zone underneath.
26:44They're not playing man to man.
26:46And Brock Marion is just sitting right there in the middle.
26:49The intended receiver for the Raiders fell down again.
26:53You know, it's ironic, but the Raider players have slipped more
26:57on this field today than the Cowboys.
26:59Aikman to throw.
27:01Going deep for Irvin.
27:03And Michael Irvin comes back to throw it.
27:06And gets the first down at the 16.
27:10Pass was short.
27:12Irvin came back.
27:13Made the adjustment and got it.
27:16Michael Irvin was really frustrated last week.
27:19For all intents and purposes, he only caught one pass.
27:22Here he is out here.
27:23And you see it's just a little stop and go.
27:26The ball is thrown short.
27:29Michael Irvin makes a great adjustment on the ball.
27:32And again, the Raider defenders slip.
27:3536-yard game.
27:38John and I will be in Detroit.
27:41I'm leaving tonight.
27:43Stream pass to Novacek.
27:46Chased down by Chester McLaughlin.
27:50One thing, this Cowboy line has done a pretty good job
27:54of protecting Troy Aikman because, as I said earlier,
27:58I didn't feel that his knee is completely healthy.
28:01And the thing that when you have a quarterback
28:04and he's not completely healthy,
28:05I don't think either one of these quarterbacks are today.
28:08But they need good pass protection.
28:10They can't get beaten around.
28:13Deion Sanders on offense.
28:16Lined up.
28:17The Aikman's left.
28:19Reverse.
28:22Nothing good for Deion.
28:25Rob Fredrickson.
28:27Did you see when Rob Fredrickson hit him?
28:29Yes.
28:30He stopped.
28:31He was trying to keep his feet going,
28:33and the feet were just going.
28:34He wasn't going anywhere.
28:37But that's a linebacker hitting a guy.
28:39Watch.
28:40Watch when Fredrickson hits him.
28:41It's going to be a reverse out here to this side,
28:44to the right of the screen.
28:46Fredrickson sees it right now.
28:48Now watch Deion's feet when he hits him.
28:51Both feet, the cleats.
28:53All the cleats just come out of the ground.
28:55Look, he has no cleats in the ground anymore.
28:57If you don't have cleats in the ground,
28:59you can't keep going where you were going.
29:02We'll have to wait for the next dance.
29:04That is the definition of a de-cleater.
29:08I mean, he just hit him, and boom,
29:10he knocked both feet straight up in the air.
29:12And then the ball angered him.
29:15You know, I'm sure the defenses think I've heard enough about Deion.
29:19Deion this, Deion that, Deion dance.
29:23I've heard enough about Deion.
29:26Deion this, Deion that, Deion dance.
29:30Deion's not going to do it to me.
29:32Not going to dance when I got a shot.
29:35Yeah, that's the problem with playing offense.
29:37You know, on defense, you can do the hitting.
29:39On offense, all those guys that want to get you can get you.
29:42Yeah.
29:44Legally.
29:45Linebackers have that goofy look in their eye.
29:47You know, they walk around like that and say,
29:48put them on offense, let me get a hold of them.
29:50I'll show you what 35 million is.
29:53You become a target.
29:54You become a marked man.
29:56Linebackers and special team guys live in a different zone.
30:00Well, they're all goofy.
30:03There's Aikman.
30:09Complete to Emmitt Smith.
30:12There was Rob Fredrickson again.
30:14Unusual route for Emmitt.
30:19I think that they're trying to get things underneath that here,
30:22and the guy that I usually get it underneath to is Jay Novacek,
30:26or the moose, but in this case,
30:28they're running a pattern out there to Emmitt Smith,
30:32and I think they probably liked having Rob Fredrickson on them,
30:35but the thing is, you have to run your pattern enough.
30:38If it's complete, you have to get a first down.
30:40Fredrickson made a heck of a play by tackling him
30:43before he got to the first down.
30:45That's two plays in a row by Fredrickson.
30:49Boniol for the field goal, and he is good, and it's 17-7.
30:56From 26 yards away, Chris Boniol, who's having a fine year,
31:01puts the Cowboys ahead by 10.
31:12Cowboys 17, Raiders 7 in Oakland.
31:15Coming up, the Dockers halftime with J.B., Terry, Howie, and Jimmy,
31:20the full cast.
31:22Scores and highlights of all the games around the league today.
31:26Boniol back to kickoff.
31:28Maybe Howie will know where Anthony Smith was.
31:31They're old teammates.
31:35Aikman's on a little hot streak here.
31:37They didn't get that first down there.
31:39He completed the pass to Emmitt Smith, but when he did that,
31:42that was 11 straight.
31:45He gets that way.
31:46He'll get in a streak or in a zone or whatever that word is,
31:50and he can darn near get to perfect.
31:53He can put the ball in places that no one else can
31:56when he gets that streak going, that zone.
32:01This smile will return the kickoff.
32:05He slipped, and down he goes at about the 24.
32:09I think it's a real disadvantage that the Raiders don't live here in Oakland,
32:13that they practice in Los Angeles and just come up here so late.
32:17I always felt it was a real advantage to know your field,
32:21and we used to practice here every Saturday before a home game.
32:25Sometimes we'd practice here Friday and Saturday
32:27because we wanted the advantage of knowing the field better
32:31than the opponent ever did, and we always did.
32:34In this case, the Cowboys had a walkthrough yesterday.
32:37Not much happened, but they did get accustomed to the field.
32:40The Raiders didn't get a hit until about 6 o'clock,
32:42so they haven't seen it.
32:43I think that's a disadvantage.
32:45I think that when the Raiders move here full time,
32:47they'll pick up that advantage.
32:52To William.
32:54About 8 Godfrey miles made the stop.
33:00Now the Raiders are going with that no huddle that we talked about.
33:03I think we'll probably see a little more of that in the second half.
33:07Second and two.
33:10Stadler back.
33:13Williams again.
33:15Darren Smith, but he'll have enough for a first down.
33:21I don't know that he even wanted that complete, Pat,
33:24because it was only for about two yards.
33:27I think they ruled it incomplete anyway.
33:29Yeah, they did.
33:30But I don't know.
33:31In this situation with 27 seconds,
33:34I think you've got to get the ball a little deeper than two yards.
33:38I think that that West Coast or whatever,
33:40those short passing things are good,
33:42but in these situations you have to get the ball up the field.
33:46This is Williams.
33:49And again, he loses his footing.
33:52He got the first down,
33:53but they call a timeout with 20 seconds remaining.
33:59In fact, I would say right now the team that should have the longer cleats
34:02are the Oakland Raiders.
34:04The Oakland Raiders at the 40.
34:09A game of seven on the play.
34:11This had to grab you a little bit.
34:13This is the locker room yesterday where you used to coach.
34:15Well, yeah, this was a coaching locker.
34:18That was my locker right there.
34:20Here's a player's locker.
34:21You see those old stools?
34:22They're the same stools that we had there when I was coaching.
34:25I thought this was a great big locker room.
34:28This is where my quarterback used to be.
34:30In fact, right here, this locker there, that was Kenny Stadler's locker.
34:33Troy Aikman was in it yesterday.
34:35This was our training room.
34:36I thought it was a big training room, but I looked at it yesterday.
34:40You could only fit about three or four guys in there.
34:43My philosophy was if you had a little training room
34:45and no one could go in there, then no one would get hurt.
34:48And no one could hide in there.
34:50Yeah, but it was great walking through there.
34:52But now they have carpet on it.
34:53I mean, when we were there, we didn't even have any carpet.
34:57Cowboys were saying it's a small locker room.
34:59I told them, I said, a lot of games were won out of that locker room.
35:03First and ten.
35:08Hostetler back to throw it.
35:10Hennings hit Hostetler just as he let it go.
35:14Pass is caught by Brown.
35:17Chad Hennings, and Hostetler is still down.
35:19Chad Hennings hit him just as he fired.
35:21You just had the feeling the first time that Hostetler took a hit
35:25that he was going to stay down.
35:26You see, here's the stunt.
35:27He'll come outside.
35:28Haley goes to the inside.
35:30See, Charles Haley take the inside.
35:32Chad Hennings takes the outside,
35:34and he just hits Hostetler right after he throws the ball.
35:38See, 94, Haley goes inside.
35:41Hennings comes to the outside, and you can see it's that left shoulder.
35:44It's that left side.
35:46Even before he got hit, that left side was bothering him.
35:51And you can just see in the pregame warm-ups
35:53that the first time that he got hit or got that type of hit
35:58that we were going to see Vince Evans.
36:00Let's just look at the stunt again.
36:01Watch Charles Haley.
36:03He'll come to the inside.
36:04Now, he really draws a crowd.
36:06Hennings starts to push on his guy.
36:08Then he loops to the outside right there.
36:11And you can see even before that play,
36:13Hostetler was holding his left arm in close,
36:17and the ball, and he just went right down on his left shoulder.
36:22And that's a big load on top of him.
36:24Chad Hennings, the strongest of the Cowboys.
36:27And that's why we talked about pass protection going to be so important
36:31because I didn't feel coming into this game
36:34that either one of these quarterbacks could take a hit like that.
36:40Vince Evans you saw loosening up on the sideline.
36:46He's the oldest player in the NFL,
36:48the emergency quarterbacks for the Raiders, Billy Joe Hobart,
36:53and for Dallas, Jason Garrett.
36:56So that means Vince Evans will come in now,
36:59and as you say, the oldest player in the league,
37:02the oldest quarterback.
37:03And the thing that always amazes me about Vince Evans
37:06is that he's the oldest quarterback,
37:09but he can still run.
37:11And usually when you get the old quarterback,
37:14you just rush to a point with Vince Evans.
37:17But now, you have to say, now we have to worry about control,
37:20we have to worry about contain,
37:22you have to worry about all those things you worry about a young quarterback.
37:30I mean, just watch this.
37:31And again, it's his left hand that's broken and it's left shoulder.
37:34You can see how he's holding.
37:35And watch, right there, he falls right on the left shoulder
37:38and he immediately grabs his shoulder with the right arm.
37:41Jeff Hoster was really hurting.
37:43Because he's a tough guy.
37:46And that left hand is already broken.
37:49He's had the throat injury this year.
37:52And he injured that left shoulder last week against the Giants.
37:56When we talked to him last night, that left shoulder didn't.
37:59Anytime you hold your elbow that close to your body,
38:03and I watched him in the pregame warm-up,
38:05he was doing it all the time.
38:06When he was throwing, his throwing motion was a little awkward looking.
38:11And I think that we talked about if they could run the ball
38:15and really protect him so he didn't take that kind of shot,
38:18he could probably get through the game.
38:21But he couldn't take that kind of shot that Chad Hennings put on him.
38:25And I don't think Troy Aikman could either.
38:28No, I don't think so.
38:29What happened to him last week?
38:31Last week it was Dana Stubbefield who hit him like Chad Hennings did
38:35and fell on him and that was the one that put him out of the game.
38:38I don't think he could take a hit like that this week.
38:43Marquez Pope hit him first on the first play of the game, the first pass play.
38:47Marquez Pope is number 23, came off the corner on a blitz,
38:52and you see him go right down, Troy Aikman go right down on his left knee,
38:56then Dana Stubbefield got him here and he fell on the left knee.
39:01I don't think he could take another one like that today.
39:04That was on turf, this is on grass.
39:07That's not an indictment of any surface.
39:10Well, I think it should be an indictment.
39:12I think artificial turf stinks.
39:14I don't think there's any place in football for it.
39:19Well, that's an indictment then.
39:20It should be.
39:25They're cheering Jeff Hostetler, but they love Vince Evans here too.
39:31And again, as you pointed out earlier,
39:34the amazing thing about Vince Evans is he can still run.
39:39And he's a change of pace.
39:41And when Vince Evans goes back there, you have no idea.
39:44I mean, he may run with it, throw it anywhere, run and throw it, do any of those things.
39:50Evans back to throw it, but he can still run.
39:54And Hennings came off the block to cut him down.
39:59No huddle offense.
40:02He might get off another play, maybe not.
40:11That's the end of the first half.
40:14They will not get off another play.
40:18And at halftime at the Oakland Coliseum stunned Oakland home crowd,
40:24at the moment at least, as Dallas leads by 10.
40:30Touchdown pass from Aikman to Irvin.
40:33And a touchdown by Smith, 17-70.
40:40Back at the Oakland Coliseum, Pat Summerall with John Madden.
40:43And, John, we talked about the confidence factor before the game.
40:47I think the Cowboys lacked some.
40:49They got it back, and the Raiders have to have a little doubt.
40:52Yeah, and the Cowboys got it back,
40:54and I think part of it is Troy Aikman is in that zone now.
40:58He has 11 straight.
41:00He has this thing that it looks like he can throw to Michael Irvin
41:03any time he wants to.
41:05The pass protection for the Cowboys is good.
41:07I'm surprised at the way the Raiders are falling down
41:11and slipping on this field.
41:12Me too.
41:13I think that's been a big part of the story.
41:15You would expect if there's going to be a lot of slipping,
41:18you expect that the Cowboys would have been doing the slipping
41:21and the Raiders would have control.
41:23But that first half was really the opposite of that.
41:26Let's have a look.
41:27As you look at Troy Aikman,
41:29let's have a look at the halftime statistics.
41:31Well, again, this one here is all...
