00:00:47Welcome back to Texas Stadium, Cowboys shutting out Phoenix, 17-0, we're about to start the
00:00:53second half.
00:00:54Randy Cross with you here today in Dallas, and Randy, you know, everyone that's a football
00:00:59fan wanted to see how Bernie Kosar would perform today, I'm not really surprised at all how
00:01:05excellent he has played in this game.
00:01:06Well, he's a quarterback that can still play a lot of real good football, he's a quarterback
00:01:11in a system that allows him to do what he does best, and that's take advantage of defenses
00:01:17taking gambles.
00:01:18Well, he led the Cowboys on two touchdown drives, one of them set up with this play,
00:01:24pass play that went 86 yards to Emmitt Smith.
00:01:27That's one of those gambles, bad tackling and a blitz killed the Cardinals on that play,
00:01:32Bernie's side coming and just dumps a short one, and then the rest of it's all Emmitt.
00:01:37Smith was tackled, he later scored on a four-yard run, and then later Kosar throws a touchdown
00:01:43pass to Novacek.
00:01:45You know, maybe he can't run that well, maybe he's not an active guy, maybe he's not a guy
00:01:50to run the wishbone in the option with, but you know what he is, he's a quarterback you
00:01:54can throw the ball with, and he's a quarterback that has got lots of good years left in him.
00:01:58What about the second half for Phoenix to have any chance, can they come back?
00:02:02I think the Phoenix Cardinals right now need some spark, need some life, they're basically
00:02:07a dead to dying football team right now, no confidence, no spring, they need a big play
00:02:14early.
00:02:15That's a kick to the Cowboys to start the second half, Davis pins Williams in a corner
00:02:20and will run it out, Williams will not make it to the 15, Derrick Ware drags him down
00:02:26at the 14.
00:02:27Let's see who will start the second half at quarterback, it's going to be Bernie, Bernie's
00:02:35got the helmet on and Jason's got the hat on.
00:02:41Look at the Cowboy possessions under the direction of Kosar, that fumble was an exchange
00:02:49fumble between Stepnoski and Kosar, and this is one of those situations like earlier, you're
00:02:59backed up, you'll get exotic looks, you could get blitzes, it's a new system.
00:03:05Worst starting field position for the Cowboys today and it's Lasek to the 22, they start
00:03:11the second half with Kosar at quarterback, Lasek in for Smith at running back.
00:03:21Watch the job that's done up front by the offensive line, that's just bodies on bodies,
00:03:27there's no crunching blocks being made, no real physical intimidation involved, that's
00:03:31just a case where those big white jerseys are all over the ones on red, they can't come
00:03:35off of the tackle.
00:03:36That was a nine yard run for the Alabama rookie, second down and one, Johnston with the flag
00:03:47thrown in, he's near the first down, and that's definitely the area of holding, guy starts
00:03:55getting away, you grab him.
00:04:04Holding, number 61 offense, ten yards, repeat second down.
00:04:09That's big Nate Newton, we joked with Jimmy Johnson yesterday when he told us that Troy
00:04:15wasn't going to address that, hey if you had two quarterbacks go down, who's your third
00:04:20emergency guy, and we said would you go with Nate, do you go with Newton as quarterback?
00:04:27Don't think so.
00:04:28He sort of laughed and said no, that'll be Novacek, take a look at the sideline, Steve
00:04:33Berline who's had ankle problems, had knee problems, twisted up pretty good against New
00:04:37Orleans, he's got to be getting a little bit frustrated watching this right now at this
00:04:41point.
00:04:42Would Kosar have even been signed by the Cowboys had Berline still been here as the backup
00:04:47for Dallas?
00:04:48I don't think so, they had a quality backup, Berline can play.
00:04:52Ball tipped in the air by Mike Jones, and Bankston gave chase, here's a former high
00:05:00school quarterback who played for his father down in Columbia, South Carolina, Mike Jones,
00:05:06good young defensive tackle from North Carolina State.
00:05:09And a case of the defensive line getting the arms up, saw Mark Rippon in the last Washington
00:05:15game get pulled out of a game for having too many of those balls batted down by the
00:05:20defensive line, but that is a case right there of a nice play by a defensive lineman, not
00:05:24by a bad pass by a quarterback.
00:05:25Interesting to talk about the Kosar signing, again Berline was the backup last year, then
00:05:26they brought in Hugh Millen after Berline left, they cut Millen this week to make room
00:05:27for Berline.
00:05:28And on 3rd and 11, play by Chris Oldham, forcing the Cowboys to punt.
00:05:44It's a great illustration to me of what Dallas has done here with Bernie Kosar, to the kind
00:05:49of organization I think fans all over this country want.
00:05:52They want their organizations to operate like Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson operate the
00:05:56Cowboys.
00:05:57This is a team that wants to win and is willing to do what it takes to win.
00:06:01You can't tell me a lot of teams in this league didn't get a chance to sign Bernie Kosar.
00:06:05I mean, Jerry Jones just did what it took to get Bernie Kosar.
00:06:11John Jett to Bailey, Cardinals will have good field position, Bailey out of bounds, Dallas
00:06:2147.
00:06:2240 yard punt, 6 yard run back.
00:06:29And Joe Fischbach injured on that play.
00:06:33Here's another player the Cowboys signed into the season, special teams star back in Atlanta,
00:06:40later cut.
00:06:41The Cowboys picked up Fischbach and Elvis Patterson.
00:06:44As you said, Randy, this is a franchise that is the best, the best team in pro football,
00:06:50but they're always tinkering and looking for ways to even get better, make them stronger.
00:06:54Well, I think three great examples, you look at the Cowboys, you look at some of the teams
00:06:58that Mr. Cook, Jack Kent Cook, has put together in Washington at times, not necessarily this
00:07:03year mind you, San Francisco, Eddie DiBartolo.
00:07:06These are owners that want to win football games.
00:07:10And you cannot put too much of a premium on that.
00:07:15See that's Bill Cosby with a cowboy helmet on, sitting next to Jerry Jones and Mr. Jones's
00:07:20box.
00:07:21But you have got to see, and see, he'll do anything to get a player.
00:07:25Now he's gone all the way to the Temple of Love, so he's got him with the ball, he's
00:07:29already got him in the box, practicing the grip on the ball.
00:07:32The first round draft choice, supplemental pick out of Temple, Bill Cosby may come in.
00:07:38But this is an owner here Jim, this is the kind of guy you want as an owner, if you want
00:07:42to win.
00:07:43Teams around the league, look at Phoenix for example, you tell me Phoenix hasn't had a
00:07:47chance to make trades, draft people, pay people, get the guys it takes to be a winner, they've
00:07:53had the shots, they just haven't done it, and Jerry Jones has done it.
00:07:56Well they did make attempts in their defense in this particular off season, signing Clark,
00:08:02signing Berline and Cecil, and here on first down Chandler gets the handoff to Ron Moore
00:08:09and Moore to the 46, for the first time they showed signs of going out and getting some
00:08:15players.
00:08:16Well they definitely did, but you know, attempts are a lot like draft choices in the free agent
00:08:21market, they're less of a gamble, but I mean a system is a system, and you look at Ron
00:08:25Moore, the running back, what a great example of a guy that, you know, people pass over,
00:08:29goes to a smaller school in Pittsburgh State, and they say, well why should we draft him?
00:08:33Well you draft a guy like that because he can play football.
00:08:37Second down seven, and that's Butch Roll with his second short catch of the day, still shy
00:08:43of a first down, it'll be third and about about five.
00:08:46And on this third and six, Chris Chandler has got to get the coordination working between
00:09:00his wide receivers, a Ricky Kroll has been bumped and jammed all day long, and got to
00:09:06find somebody to get down the field and get open.
00:09:09Another audible by Chandler at the line, third and six.
00:09:15Here come the Cowboys on the blitz, Chandler gets it away, first down, deepest penetration
00:09:21of the day, Ricky Kroll inside of the 30, spot him at the 27, 17 yard pass play.
00:09:29And a good job by Chandler of standing in there, sort of keeping his head while the
00:09:33bullets are flying around him, watch the offensive line pick up the stunts up front, the running
00:09:38backs, Moore and Bailey pick up the blitz, and for all that activity, running and grabbing
00:09:43around Chandler, no one really touches him.
00:09:46Watch it again.
00:09:48There's Larry Centers, picking up on one side, Bailey's on the other side, there's bodies
00:09:54flying, but nobody's hitting the quarterback.
00:09:56Big block by the way, by rookie Ben Coleman, number 62, lined up at left guard, in for
00:10:01Mark May, on first down, Chandler fires, complete, Edwards, near another first, give him 10 to
00:10:09the 17.
00:10:11We talked about what do the Cardinals need to do to get the Cowboys attention, to establish
00:10:15themselves back into this football game, it's finish off this kind of a drive.
00:10:19They've moved the ball, they've moved it down to the territory of Dallas, further than they
00:10:23have all day long, Joe Bugle's offense needs to finish this drive, and you don't finish
00:10:28the drive kicking for one as an extra point, I mean kicking for three as a field goal,
00:10:33you finish it kicking an extra point.
00:10:35Chandler has connected on his last seven passes.
00:10:43Johnny Bailey, down at the 11, on first down, gain of about six, Dixon Edwards makes the
00:10:50tackle, Johnny Bailey also returning to state, where he starred at Texas A&I, set some records,
00:11:00Division 1 AA, Texas A&I that has produced some NFL players through the years, and he's
00:11:08a back, like Moore, we talked about that attack running, he's the guy that attacks the line
00:11:12of scrimmage and makes his moves once he gets down the field, same school as Daryl Green,
00:11:17of the Redskins, second and five, to go back to Bailey, and tackled at the 10, Ken Norton,
00:11:26Norton, who had a fumble recovery in the first half, makes the play that time, key third down
00:11:32coming up for the Cardinals, isn't it? Yeah, it definitely is, especially following that
00:11:35second down, looked like a big hole on the right hand side, Bailey saw it and ran, it
00:11:40was an illustration of that speed of the Dallas Cowboys defense, here on third down, it is
00:11:46the wide receivers, remember, Phoenix does not have a viable tight end on their roster,
00:11:51much less in the game, third down, and three.
00:12:01That's a short, Sinners makes the spin move to pick up the first down.
00:12:09We thought the umpire might get decked this time, for just a second, if Sinners
00:12:14cut to his right, but a good move by Sinners to pick up the necessary yardage. And this is a
00:12:19job of Larry Sinners, pulling down deep for a move, watch Norton, I got him, I got him,
00:12:24where'd he go? That's a whiff, one whiff, two grabs, four squirms, and a first down.
00:12:33First and goal, butch roll lined up as a fullback out of the eye.
00:12:39In the corner, was he tripped? No call, Anthony Edwards was the target, intended target,
00:12:57Larry Brown defending. And it wasn't the first trip that Anthony Edwards is protesting
00:13:02with Brown, it's this, it's the first, I mean it's the first trip, not the second trip,
00:13:05the second one you saw, the first one was well earlier, about five yards before that,
00:13:10and that's why he couldn't get to the ball.
00:13:14This ends Chandler's streak of eight straight completions, what did you think there?
00:13:18That was the second trip, I don't think it's interference,
00:13:21they're both looking back, they're both going after the football.
00:13:23Bailey back into the backfield, second and goal.
00:13:26Bailey, Bailey driving down to the lawn, well he carried Ken Norton on his back.
00:13:39Well when you think power football, you think power running, does a running back five foot
00:13:44eight, 190 pounds come to mind? Well in most cases no, but following a great trap block by Lance
00:13:50Smith, watch this, grind, grind, grind, he's got a little help from the back with Walter Reeves
00:13:58pushing him a little bit, but the linebackers are on top of him too. They've brought back in
00:14:03linebacker Garth Jax, he's lined up as a fullback, leading the way for Lon Moore perhaps,
00:14:10third and goal from the lawn. Play action fake to Moore, flip to roll, and incomplete, no flag.
00:14:21Godfrey Miles was covering roll, roll used to catch all of these touchdowns with Buffalo and
00:14:33goal line situations, but not this time. Well you're not going to catch it if you're being held,
00:14:37watch Miles give him the little double tug on the hip there, and wasn't much of a hold,
00:14:42but it was a, it was enough of a hold, and roll didn't like it, but here comes that field goal
00:14:47we talked about, and this is what Phoenix did not want to do, they have to kick the field goal
00:14:52down three scores, so fourth and goal from the one, we'll call it 19 yards,
00:14:57and Phoenix gets its first points. Greg Davis from 19.
00:15:05Boy you drive it all the way down to the one,
00:15:09I don't think so Jim, I think you go for it right there, put yourself in the game.
00:15:17So Phoenix puts the points on the board, getting the 19-yard field goal by Greg Davis, and that's a,
00:15:23that's one you can really kind of go back and forth on for a long time,
00:15:27do you put the points on the board, or do you go ahead?
00:15:29Davis again angles it to Williams, from a yard deep,
00:15:34Williams, oh someone got just a piece of him, it was Garth Jacks,
00:15:41and Williams does not make it out to the 20 for the second time in this half.
00:15:45Good play by Jacks, timeout on the field with the Cowboys leading 17-3.
00:15:56Is their 60 minutes anniversary show really as good as the critics say it is?
00:16:00Well see for yourself, when the best one hour in television
00:16:04becomes the best two hours in television tonight right here on CBS.
00:16:07Fumbling this game, Emmitt Smith back in for Davison, fumbles, and boy this would be some recovery for the Cardinals
00:16:17on the first play back, and they have it with Reuben Davis,
00:16:21that is the first turnover by the Cowboys in the third quarter this season.
00:16:28And it makes that decision by Joe Bugle to go for the field goal and hope for a mistake,
00:16:32look pretty doggone good right now.
00:16:34Hoping for the Cowboys to make a mistake can be a real gamble, but Emmitt Smith sat on the sideline
00:16:40for the better part of getting a hexed set run, he wasn't playing,
00:16:44little reach, little problem in the coordination between Bernie and Emmitt,
00:16:49the ball never gets there, and Chandler gets another shot down here in the red zone.
00:16:56You're right Randy, this is why you have to take the field goal, you had to regret it,
00:17:01this is why you have to take the field goal, you had to reduce it to a two-score game,
00:17:07and now the Cardinals drive it to the 17, short game by Johnny Bailey.
00:17:13Touchdown could make it 17 to 10, which was the final, the first time these two played out in Phoenix.
00:17:21Cardinals' score on this Dallas defense, it will not be done on the ground I don't think,
00:17:34they're going to have to throw it in the air.
00:17:36Three receivers in, second down inning.
00:17:40We're in the end zone, no flag, as Ricky Prohl was at the goal line,
00:17:46Jim Jeffcoat was coming in on the quarterback.
00:17:52Nice all-around job by the Dallas defense in their red zone D,
00:17:57and that's where this defense really excels, they shrink the field,
00:18:01they play their zones perfectly, and there was nowhere for Chandler to go.
00:18:06They play their zones perfectly, and there was nowhere for Chandler to go,
00:18:10he was he was hoping at best at a pole if he could open where he put that ball.
00:18:15Third down, third down and eight.
00:18:25Chandler to centers, did he hold on? Yes, touchdown Cardinals.
00:18:3017 yards to Larry Center, right between Bill Bates and Thomas Everett.
00:18:43And what a job of concentration by Larry Centers, because
00:18:48when Chandler throws this ball, watch it come into centers.
00:18:53You make the call, is he actually watching? Does he know this ball's coming?
00:18:58It's a little tough to tell from there, but just as he turned his head,
00:19:01that ball appeared in his stomach.
00:19:03Centers, second touchdown catch of the season, he scored on a
00:19:06pass play from Chandler in the season opener at Philadelphia,
00:19:09and now this extra point brings the Cardinals within seven.
00:19:15Greg Davis.
00:19:16Centers has come up with some big plays since that foolish personal foul penalty
00:19:21late in the second quarter.
00:19:23A couple of spin moves for first down, now a touchdown.
00:19:27And Dallas leads 17 to 10.
00:19:326.13 to go, third quarter, Cardinals convert on the Cowboys'
00:19:37first third quarter turnover of the season, and suddenly they're within seven.
00:19:43No rest for Larry Centers, who made a fabulous catch on even a better throw by Chandler.
00:19:48Centers will be covering the kickoff.
00:19:58Same corner for Williams.
00:20:03Williams again, unable to make it to the 20-yard line mark,
00:20:08almost though, to the 19, Zordich on the hit.
00:20:13Look at two things, watch Larry Centers and watch Ben Coleman,
00:20:16the rookie out of Wake Forest, the job he does on Leon Lett.
00:20:22Chandler makes a great throw, a nice pattern by
00:20:26Centers, adjusting right at the end, going in front of Billy Bates,
00:20:29but the protection is what enabled Chandler to get that one off.
00:20:33Emmitt Smith in the backfield, and then he fumbled to set up that score.
00:20:40Kosar under center.
00:20:44Play action, Oldham in on Kosar, now giving chase, and he'll just toss it away.
00:20:50Kosar, this season, with Cleveland, he had thrown five touchdowns,
00:20:55three interceptions, but was sacked 21 times with the Browns this year.
00:21:01Right, and not all those are blitzes, Jim, and I'm sure he's
00:21:05sacked quite a bit because of the protection he wasn't getting, and
00:21:08you know, it's never pretty when Bernie runs, there's no other way to put it.
00:21:12Bernie is not what you'd call a stylistic striver.
00:21:16I like that.
00:21:16He runs in three or four different directions when he's going anywhere.
00:21:20Stylistic strider.
00:21:24Now, second and ten.
00:21:27Kosar, Novacek, first down, Cowboys.
00:21:41Bad decision there by Safer.
00:21:43Bad decision there by safety, Oldham, Chris Oldham, number 27,
00:21:48trying to take the low road on Novacek, and unfortunately for Oldham,
00:21:53Novacek saw that coming, and he tried to cut the big guy down,
00:21:57and Novacek stepped right over for that first down.
00:22:06First down from the 30.
00:22:08Smith, before Emmett Smith, Reuben Davis, first one to make contact.
00:22:17Rucker helped out.
00:22:20Yeah, I guess Emmett's stomach feels a lot better now that the score is up to 17 to 10.
00:22:25He dropped that one on the last possession, and I'm sure
00:22:30those stomach problems are a lot less of a concern.
00:22:33I'll tell you, there are a lot of upset stomachs around the city of Dallas that
00:22:37now that the Cardinals have made a game out of it.
00:22:42Second down and five.
00:22:43Johnston, again, lined up on the right side as a tight end,
00:22:46and drew to him last time out of this formation.
00:22:49Bernice, again, trying to get away from the trouble,
00:22:53and Freddie Joe Nunn flushed him out of the pocket and took him down after the pass.
00:22:59And this offense of Dallas is showing the Phoenix Cardinals a few different things,
00:23:04and what the Phoenix Cardinals are showing the Dallas offense is a pass rush, an attack.
00:23:11They did it that time with four guys.
00:23:12They've done it with five.
00:23:13They've done it with six.
00:23:14They've done it with seven.
00:23:16But they've changed it up, and they've taken the momentum out of here.
00:23:21Third down, third down and five.
00:23:23And let's check out the Cowboys have performed on third down today.
00:23:2750%.
00:23:33Left side, going for Irvin, and Aeneas Williams with a Chuck Cecil type hit.
00:23:39And the Cardinals will get the football back.
00:23:43You talk about the momentum just earlier, Jim, and these Phoenix Cardinals right now
00:23:48are starting to believe they have got a legitimate shot in this football game.
00:23:53Watch the hand fighting, watch the struggle by Irvin,
00:23:56and then the hit by Williams.
00:24:03John Jett, who offered his jersey, number 19, to Bernie Kosar when he was signed on Wednesday.
00:24:08But Bernie said, no, you have it, you have the rights to it, I'll take 18.
00:24:15Jett, running to Johnny Bailey.
00:24:19Bailey, 18 down and 22 quickly.
00:24:23Darren Smith and Kenneth Gant.
00:24:32Boy, does he enjoy special teams.
00:24:35Makes it exciting, too.
00:24:364.20 remaining, third quarter.
00:24:39Cowboys by seven.
00:24:4017.10, Jim Nantz and Randy Cross back at Texas Stadium.
00:24:48How surprised are you?
00:24:49I'm very surprised at the depth from which Phoenix has kind of pulled themselves back up.
00:24:54I think they had every reason to quit.
00:24:57This is not a team that wants to have any quit in it.
00:24:59And this is a team right now that needs another big play.
00:25:02I'm out throwing on first quarter.
00:25:04I'm out throwing on first down, and look out, Johnny Bailey to the 26.
00:25:13Darren Smith, with a shrug after that play finished.
00:25:17He really thought he had a great chance for the pick, and maybe an open field straight ahead.
00:25:22And that's one thing, if you watch Chris Chandler enough, you do notice the ball has
00:25:26a little air underneath it and tends to hang a little bit.
00:25:29If there is anticipation, there can be a pick, but this one is just thrown perfectly.
00:25:35Second down, and six.
00:25:50Across the middle, Sinners, smothered at the 31 by Ken Norton.
00:25:57So third and short coming up for Phoenix, with 3.40 remaining in the third quarter.
00:26:05Cowboys came into this game with a one-game edge on the Giants.
00:26:14New York has already won today.
00:26:18Third and one, what do you look for here?
00:26:22You look for the crowd to be a heck of a factor.
00:26:24Chandler cannot automobilize.
00:26:27Not properly.
00:26:29Got five on the play clock.
00:26:32Two on the play clock in time.
00:26:34Third and one, passing for it, gets it.
00:26:37Gets it to the 39-yard line with Johnny Bailey.
00:26:41Gain of eight.
00:26:43And the Cardinals have done a nice job the last two series.
00:26:46If Dallas and Butch Davis, our coordinators, decided that we're going to take your receivers
00:26:50away on the outside, well, Jerry Rome, the offensive coordinator, has told Chris Chandler,
00:26:55let's go to the running backs.
00:26:56Let's use Larry Sinners.
00:26:58Let's use Bailey.
00:26:59We'll get them the ball inside to loosen up the outside.
00:27:03Bailey and Sinners are the splitbacks.
00:27:06First down for Phoenix.
00:27:11Fumble.
00:27:12Ball is kicked right into the arms, I believe, of Charles Haley.
00:27:21Johnny Bailey booted the football.
00:27:26And that's the second turnover today for the Cardinals.
00:27:29A couple of fumbles they've lost.
00:27:33And now the question will be, will they lose the momentum with it?
00:27:38Watch the exchange.
00:27:42Chandler put that ball right on Bailey's arm.
00:27:45It never got into his proverbial bread basket there.
00:27:48And just when you think that gun that Phoenix keeps shooting themselves in the foot with
00:27:53is out of bullets, they reload it.
00:27:57And I say, will they lose the momentum?
00:27:58Because the Cowboys, with a score here, could really break the hearts of the Phoenix team
00:28:04that's come back.
00:28:05And there's a fumble on the back end of that play.
00:28:08There is a flag down, however.
00:28:11It's sort of unanimous.
00:28:12There are several flags down on that play.
00:28:16Cardinals all say they have it.
00:28:18No.
00:28:18Recovery Dallas.
00:28:24Nice job by the Phoenix defense of stopping up that play.
00:28:29Hold against the Cowboys.
00:28:33So had it been recovered by the Phoenix Cardinals, they would have taken over.
00:28:37Holding.
00:28:38Number 79 offense.
00:28:4010 yards.
00:28:41Still second down.
00:28:43Correction.
00:28:43Still first down.
00:28:44Watch the big guy, Williams.
00:28:46I mean, most things this size.
00:28:49Look, he's off the line of scrimmage.
00:28:50He should be up here with Gogan.
00:28:53You see things this big moving, they usually have commercial plates on them.
00:28:59The block first.
00:29:00The hold second.
00:29:01Nice call.
00:29:02And that is a fumble.
00:29:04That ball came out before Emmitt Smith hit the ground.
00:29:06Reuben Davis looked like he injured a knee on that play, Randy.
00:29:10And he hobbled to the sideline.
00:29:12Replaced by Ken Harvey.
00:29:16First and 20.
00:29:17There's Reuben.
00:29:21First and 20.
00:29:22Cowboys with Kosar still the quarterback.
00:29:25Novacek.
00:29:29Down at the 44.
00:29:30Gain of about five or six.
00:29:39This has to be a frustrating time for Jimmy Johnson and Norv Turner, the offensive coordinator,
00:29:44because there's certain plays and certain situations they get into, they feel very comfortable
00:29:49calling things with Troy Aikman at quarterback.
00:29:52They can't be quite as confident.
00:29:53There's got to be several things with Bernie in there or with Garrett in there.
00:29:57They just feel they can't go to because they don't have Troy.
00:30:02Second down and 15.
00:30:05On the 44.
00:30:11Great protection.
00:30:12The pass caught by Irvin.
00:30:15And they rule him down the first time.
00:30:18At the 28.
00:30:1915 yards to Michael Irvin.
00:30:21Good enough for the first.
00:30:25You always hear the term, a quarterback throwing the ball where only his guy can get to it.
00:30:31This is not a planned pattern.
00:30:34This is Bernie Kosar seeing an edge and putting the ball where only Michael Irvin can get
00:30:40to it.
00:30:40That's a good job by a wide receiver and a great job by a catcher because you've got
00:30:45to handle those ones low and away.
00:30:46We're in the final minute of the third quarter.
00:30:49Irvin seems to be limping to the line of scrimmage.
00:30:53First down.
00:30:53Smith to the 24.
00:30:55And it's Smith inside the 25 near the 23.
00:30:59Rucker on the tackle.
00:31:01That could be the final play of the third quarter.
00:31:05Keith Rucker on the stop.
00:31:11This Phoenix team, 3 and 6 on the season.
00:31:16Dallas, 6 straight wins.
00:31:186 and 2.
00:31:20Started the win streak at Phoenix.
00:31:22And Kosar will steal a few extra seconds on the sideline with Jimmy Johnson.
00:31:26We head to the final quarter.
00:31:28Phoenix scored 10 unanswered in the third.
00:31:32But at the end of the third quarter, the score now, the Cowboys 17 and the Cardinals 10.
00:31:41Are threatening at the Phoenix 24-yard line.
00:31:45Jim Nance and Randy Cross with you today.
00:31:47The Cowboys looking for a 7-game win streak to be their longest in 10 years.
00:31:55Bernie Kosar showing today why you need a veteran backup in the NFL.
00:31:593 and 6.
00:32:01Red Emmitt Smith a little too much, but that play was figured out by the Cardinal defense,
00:32:07Chris Oldham in particular.
00:32:10Well, Bernie led Emmitt a little bit right there.
00:32:12But I don't know if Emmitt was exactly expecting that ball to come.
00:32:16I think the first pump kind of pump faked on Emmitt.
00:32:18When it was thrown out, he looked a little shocked.
00:32:22Vikings and Broncos tied 20-1.
00:32:26Tim Irwin has blocked a couple of field goals.
00:32:30Maybe he's jumping a little higher out there in that rarefied air.
00:32:34Irwin?
00:32:36Tim Irwin's my age.
00:32:39In the round, it's a win.
00:32:43Kevin Williams did not fool the Cardinals.
00:32:47That play has twice this season.
00:32:51Struck for a touchdown.
00:32:53Two weeks ago against Philadelphia, the Cowboys ran that the other way to perfection.
00:33:01This time to perfection is on the defensive side of the ball.
00:33:05Because look at the pursuit.
00:33:08Everybody on that Cardinals defense seems they want to get ahead.
00:33:12On the guy with the ball, on Williams.
00:33:14The Cardinals do a great job defensively of semi-diffusing a big turnover by Chandler and Bailey.
00:33:20Murray, 43 yards. 43-yard try. A beauty.
00:33:26Good for 44 in the first quarter. 43 in the final quarter.
00:33:33We'll return to Texas Stadium after this message from your local station.
00:33:39Dallas 20-10. You're watching the NFL on CBS.
00:33:47Kenneth Gant back in the end zone.
00:33:49Is this the NFL or the WWF?
00:33:53Maybe I'm just a little uptight about stuff like that.
00:33:57Running around like that is a good excuse for fans on the field.
00:34:02Now he's back.
00:34:06And there he goes.
00:34:12Johnny Bailey on the run back to the outside.
00:34:16Pass to 30.
00:34:18Good lead blocking by Anthony Edwards to get Bailey free all the way to the 50.
00:34:24Well the crowd was ready for that kickoff, but the kickoff team wasn't ready for that kickoff.
00:34:29Really helped a lot.
00:34:33Might have been better off had he started the kick back around the goal line.
00:34:37Now watch Johnny Bailey and his reaction when he sees the hole right here.
00:34:41Lead blocks.
00:34:43You get a convoy like that on a kickoff return, you take advantage of it.
00:34:49With Edwards running out there in front of him, nobody touched him until right about the time he ran out of bounds.
00:34:53Ron Moore back in the lineup.
00:34:56He is the tailback out of the eye on the first down from the 49.
00:35:04Moore, no.
00:35:06He ran right into Leon Lett.
00:35:14Lett has had an active afternoon here.
00:35:18That wasn't one of those tackles where there's much discussion or there's much doubt.
00:35:23That's forward motion turning up in the backpedaling quick.
00:35:29They give him a yard on the progress, so second down and 9.
00:35:33Let's see if Chandler goes to the air.
00:35:35He's 8 out of 11 in this half with a touchdown toss.
00:35:40Back with the short stuff across the middle to Kroll.
00:35:52Shy of the first by about 2 yards.
00:35:56Kid Norton on the tackle at the Dallas 44 yard line.
00:36:01That was a job there.
00:36:05Everett came up and stung Kroll pretty good and got a pretty good sting on
00:36:09Pretty good sting on Kenny Norton, the middle linebacker.
00:36:15Third down and a long 2.
00:36:21Using the situations earlier today, Chandler has used his running backs to bring out in the backfield.
00:36:255 on the play clock.
00:36:30Just got it off in time.
00:36:34Center will need to make the move for the first down.
00:36:38And I don't believe he got it.
00:36:42Leon Lett stopped him a yard shy.
00:36:46Now what do you do? 4th and 1.
00:36:50That's a play right there.
00:36:54There's putting it where the other guys aren't and there's putting it where
00:36:58you can't react to and you don't have much of a choice or a chance to make something happen.
00:37:02Leon Lett with a good job reacting to that screen pass.
00:37:06Defensive lineman reads screen and they just run dead left.
00:37:10When the ball is thrown out there on a little dump.
00:37:14Maybe they're just trying to draw the Cowboys off.
00:37:18Timeout called by Chandler.
00:37:22They were not trying to draw the Cowboys off.
00:37:26I like that. You are not playing for a playoff spot.
00:37:30Joe Bugle and the Cardinals are playing for their professional lives.
00:37:38This game summary is sponsored by McDonald's.
00:37:42Cozart, great numbers. Smith with a touchdown.
00:37:46With a story right now on 4th down, they are not going to go for it.
00:37:50They have had a great season.
00:37:54They are not going to go for it.
00:37:58They have, after the timeout, elected to punt on 4th down and 2.
00:38:06Camarillo.
00:38:10That's a great bounce for the Cardinals.
00:38:14That worked out to perfection for the Cardinals.
00:38:18Another gamble by Joe Bugle and the Cardinals that they can make
00:38:22the champions do something wrong and give them another break.
00:38:26Anthony Edwards downs it at the 1.
00:38:30With 11.30 remaining.
00:38:34Sports coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by

00:38:42AT&T, we help put your world within reach. Energizer,
00:38:46brand batteries, nothing outlasting Energizer. They keep going and going.
00:38:50Burger King and it's everyday value menu. Have it your way. I love this place.
00:38:56Back with 11.30 remaining.
00:39:00Dallas leading 20-10, 17-0 at halftime.
00:39:04The Cardinals came out with 10 points in the third quarter.
00:39:08Now 1st down from the 1.
00:39:12Maybe, maybe a yard.
00:39:16Tyrone Stowe resting on top of Smith.
00:39:20And Stowe did a good job. Watch the collision between Tyrone
00:39:24Stowe and Johnston. Bam.
00:39:28Stowe does a good job. Johnston actually was lower than Stowe
00:39:32but he just stuffed him right where he was, right in the hole. And if you can't
00:39:36make the tackle immediately, what you do is just stuff the hole up where the guy is trying to block you.
00:39:40Reuben Davis is back in. We saw him hobble off earlier
00:39:44in this half. 2nd down and 9.
00:39:48Here comes Oldham and that's gotta be a safety.
00:39:52Intentional grounding in the end zone.
00:39:56And it is. Chalk up 2 for the Cardinals.
00:40:00Chris Oldham came in
00:40:04untouched. We have intentionally grounding the football on number 18
00:40:08in the end zone. It's a safety.
00:40:12Talk about untouched. Watch
00:40:16the left side of the screen. The only reason
00:40:20he's untouched is there's absolutely nobody
00:40:24until he gets to Bernie on the Dallas Cowboys that knows
00:40:28that Oldham is coming.
00:40:32I'm not sure that was the greatest idea in the world just to try to unload it
00:40:36so feebly when you're wrapped up. That could have been caught
00:40:40for a touchdown, an interception in the end zone.
00:40:44Now the Cardinals will get the football back as Dallas
00:40:48will have the free kick from its own 20.
00:40:52Now that decision by
00:40:56Bugle proves again to be a really wise one.
00:41:00Just waiting to see the defending world's
00:41:04champions see if they'll make a mistake. And for the second consecutive time
00:41:08they have made the mistake that has enabled the Cardinals to
00:41:12get the ball back and get some points on the board.
00:41:16Jon Jett
00:41:20will boot it from the 20.
00:41:38Comes up short to Ron Moore. Ron Moore across the
00:41:4240 to the 42. Next Sunday
00:41:46on the NFL Today, Greg and Terry will turn the clock back 30 years
00:41:50for a special look at the day they played football. Reflections
00:41:54from the players and coaches who took the field two days after the assassination
00:41:58of President Kennedy. That's next Sunday on the NFL Today. That'll be followed
00:42:02by the games that include Chicago at Kansas City,
00:42:06Dallas at Atlanta, and then late some will see the Giants at Philadelphia.
00:42:10The Redskins and Rams will check their local listings for next weekend's
00:42:14action right here on CBS.
00:42:1810-37 to go in this game. 20-12.
00:42:22Dallas.
00:42:26Johnny Bailey to the 48. Gantt had a hole
00:42:30of him. Bumps Bailey back to the direction
00:42:34of the huddle. And the Cardinals continue to go to their running
00:42:38backs, centers, and Bailey. They have to get these guys circling out of the backfield
00:42:42using them in motion, bringing them back across the middle because the Dallas
00:42:46defensive backs are being so physical with the wide receivers and the Cardinals
00:42:50they're disrupting their pass patterns. Chandler on another
00:42:54pass streak. He's hit his last seven but has not thrown a lot
00:42:58downfield. This will be a short variety
00:43:02this time. They counter. And centers with a hard run
00:43:06for a first down near the Dallas 45.
00:43:10You know, we saw that shot of centers on the bench after he was called
00:43:14for the personal foul and he has really kicked it in the gear since that time.
00:43:18Well, he definitely has and here's just a power run. Remember
00:43:22Kenny Norton, 51, the linebacker with a torn bicep muscle.
00:43:26There just had a hard time really getting a hold of Larry
00:43:30centers. Those legs kept turning, the arms kept turning.
00:43:34First down, Chandler to Bailey
00:43:38and down at the 37.
00:43:42Kenny Norton taking a little while to get up now. He's up on his feet.
00:43:46See that pad on his right bicep.
00:43:50See that pad on his right arm. He's
00:43:54holding and protecting that arm. I don't know if it's not a good time right now to
00:43:58get Kenny Norton out of there. Second and two. Cardinals quickly to the
00:44:02line. Run it to Bailey.
00:44:06Bailey darting around and picks
00:44:10up the first down, I believe.
00:44:14This will be close.
00:44:18And a Cardinal down.
00:44:22I believe it's Ben Coleman.
00:44:26Second round draft choice from Wake Forest
00:44:30who has played at left guard today in for Mark May who has played
00:44:34about half the game and has been superb
00:44:38so far.
00:44:46That was doing a very good job earlier in the game.
00:44:50The big physical lineman. I mean, what else do you call
00:44:54a guy that's 6'6", 335 pounds?
00:44:58There's Coleman, 62, right on the back of that knee.
00:45:02You don't speculate in that situation for two reasons. One, you don't
00:45:06know. And two, I've been in those piles. I've been piled up in there where it's
00:45:10looked absolutely horrible. And it's not always as bad
00:45:14as it looks.
00:45:18As the medical crew from the Cardinals comes onto the field, they brought the chains out
00:45:22measured and the Cardinals have a first down. Timeout on the
00:45:26field. 8.45 remaining.
00:45:30They're still working on rookie Ben Coleman. In fact, they
00:45:34have brought out a cart. They've been working
00:45:38on the knee.
00:45:46They've already put it in a temporary cast.
00:45:52This team, the Phoenix Cardinals, has just been
00:45:56a team from an injuries and a breaks standpoint.
00:46:00If it wasn't for bad luck, they wouldn't have any.
00:46:04Why don't you take us around the league with Randy Cross.
00:46:08That's a big one there for Green Bay, getting that last second field goal from Chris Jackie.
00:46:12It's a tough situation right now down in New Orleans for Jim Moore and those Saints.
00:46:1649ers, Jerry Rice. Kind of like the game at Atlanta a few years ago.
00:46:20That was Charles Dimery's debacle down there in Atlanta. He went on to go
00:46:24to Denver and try to forget that. It was a five touchdown game against the Falcons.
00:46:28Giants trying to keep pace with these Cowboys.
00:46:32Miami, that's great. I'm really glad for Don Shuler because if this thing would have gone much longer, I think
00:46:36it would have been a lot tougher on these Dolphins to keep concentrating.
00:46:40Here's your question of the year. How do you figure Houston?
00:46:44Is that the same team that got beat up by the LA Rams or have they
00:46:48really rallied? There's a ball game.
00:46:52Kansas City has come back, huh?
00:46:56Not many people gave Kansas City much of a chance.
00:47:00Seven turnovers for Cleveland.
00:47:04More turnovers than points. Seven turnovers, five points.
00:47:08And there's the Jets trying to fight through an old nemesis.
00:47:12It seems they've never played good against the Colts.
00:47:16Falcons shutting somebody out.
00:47:20The Rams in this case and another injury
00:47:24for the Cardinals. And a very supportive
00:47:28ovation from the Cowboy fans. Great to see.
00:47:36Mark May will return to the
00:47:40left guard spot.
00:47:44And the Cardinals with this break need to
00:47:48somehow maintain what momentum they have offensively.
00:47:52If you look at Mark May, he'll be a big part of it because Chris Chandler is going to need
00:47:56protection. The running game won't be as big a feature as throwing the
00:48:00ball. The running backs will be. First down and ten.
00:48:04Cowboys showing blitz.
00:48:08Bailey trying to get by the wave and advances the football to the 32.
00:48:12They're still down two scores. 20-12. Dallas
00:48:16with 8.20 remaining. You don't have to get a touchdown
00:48:20on this possession if you're the Cardinals.
00:48:28With eight minutes to go, they have to figure with the Dallas
00:48:32offense, if the offense can get motivated, they may not see the ball again.
00:48:36So I really think they need a touchdown on this possession.
00:48:40Second down, Chandler.
00:48:44Underneath the coverage again to the 29. That's to Johnny Bailey.
00:48:48You know, you say that, and I think back to the first game between these two, the one that Dallas
00:48:52won 17-10. The Cardinals
00:48:56waited the last six minutes to try to get the football back with a chance
00:49:00to tie it, but the Cowboys kept possession the rest of the game. They ran out
00:49:04the clock the last six minutes that first time.
00:49:08I mean, it's been seven games since Dallas given up a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
00:49:12I just think this is a situation that you've got to have seven, because like you just
00:49:16made the point you made in the last Cardinal game, they might not get it back. Third and four
00:49:20and Anthony Edwards saved an interception. Larry Brown
00:49:24was poised for the pick.
00:49:28And now they'll bring out Greg Davis. That was a
00:49:32heads-up play. Brown was on the coverage. Very tight coverage.
00:49:36Jump ball. Initially tipped.
00:49:40Pulls him away from it. That was a good job by Edwards.
00:49:44Davis, oddly enough, will attempt a field goal between 40 and 49 yards.
00:49:48He has made only one of
00:49:52five between the 40s. He's two for two over 50.
00:49:56He's had a harder time in this range. 47 yards to move him within a score.
00:50:00Greg Davis.
00:50:04Got it. 20-15 Dallas.
00:50:087-11 remaining in this game.
00:50:12And now it's time for the Dallas Cowboys offense. Can
00:50:16they get their offense back pumped up and back moving again
00:50:20under Bernie Kosar? And the people they'll take a look at, they've got the greatest
00:50:24skill people in the league as a group, but how about looking at the offensive line?
00:50:34Joe Bugle charged.
00:50:38This is a Phoenix team heading into the
00:50:42final bye week of the season. Next week, Phoenix will have the week off. That's the
00:50:46last time that any teams will have a vacation midseason.
00:50:50And then they'll come back with a game at the Giants. And the Phoenix schedule gets surprisingly
00:50:54easier down the stretch. They had a midsection
00:50:58part of the schedule that was very brutal.
00:51:02Now we'll see what the
00:51:06Dallas Cowboys can do. They led 17-0 at halftime.
00:51:10Now it's 20-15.
00:51:18All the process of maturing as a champion for the Cowboys.
00:51:22They have to learn you can't turn it on and off.
00:51:26Kicking it.
00:51:30Kevin Smith from a yard deep.
00:51:34Smith with a good run back to the 30.
00:51:38They have not had any success running back kicks in this half.
00:51:42Kevin Williams in fact three times failed to get it to the 20, but now Kevin
00:51:46Smith comes in and races to the 30.
00:51:50A good run back. 7-0-1 remaining.
00:51:54Jim Nance with Randy Cross from Texas Stadium.
00:51:58Now the Cardinals, when they lose, it seems
00:52:02to always be by six points or less.
00:52:06Now the one exception this year, a 14-point drubbing
00:52:10at the hands of the 49ers.
00:52:18Smith diving for three. Rucker wrote him down with Eric Hill.
00:52:22How would you assess the day for him and Smith?
00:52:26It's been a rough one. One good long pass play. He's had the upset
00:52:30stomach. He fumbled the ball the next time he came into the ballgame.
00:52:34As a group, as an offense, this Dallas offense has to
00:52:38sort of put everything that's happened the last 53 minutes
00:52:42or so, and this is what's important, is this possession. This must be
00:52:46like an opening of the game, grind it out, seven minute drive.
00:52:50Second. Seventh. Throw it on
00:52:54second down. Kozol times the time. Now coming out of the pocket
00:52:58and flipping it instead to Emmitt Smith, and he's about a
00:53:02yard shy of the first. A little improvising there.
00:53:06Well, that's the beauty of having that kind of talent around
00:53:10you. You're going to scramble. You're not a runner. You don't move real good. You're
00:53:14forced to start running. You look up and who's in front of you but number 22 and you just sort of
00:53:18half toss and half shovel it right in front of you.
00:53:22Third and less than a yard.
00:53:26Block running with 5.45 remaining.
00:53:30Two tight ends.
00:53:34Follow Johnston. He will take you to the ball.
00:53:38Smith got it. Got it. First down for Dallas at the 42.
00:53:42That's worth a couple of minutes on the clock.
00:53:465.25 and counting.
00:53:50In the first half they had a goal line play where Lorenzo Lynch
00:53:54made a great play right over that right side of the Dallas Cowboys but right here
00:53:58where they needed the yards, they had to get it. They went back behind Williams and
00:54:02Gogan with the lead back of Johnston and got it. Smith running at three yards
00:54:06a clip today. 21 for 69 and a touchdown.
00:54:10That was only the third first down of this half for
00:54:14the Cowboys.
00:54:18Smith
00:54:22got away from Hill and Bankston. Now Lynch bumps him out of bounds.
00:54:26That'll
00:54:30stop the clock at 4.49.
00:54:34Vikings have taken the lead.
00:54:38The Cowboys
00:54:42won't be in a hurry to do anything here.
00:54:46What you want to concentrate on in this situation is if you have
00:54:50an opportunity to stay in bounds and stay in bounds and keep that clock running
00:54:54and you just lean and lean and lean and lean.
00:54:58Second and seven.
00:55:02Forward to Smith.
00:55:06Gets away from a couple of Cardinals
00:55:10but will be about a three yard shot. Stays in the field of play.
00:55:14Clock running now approaching 4.30 to go.
00:55:18Remember the Cardinals used a timeout already in this half.
00:55:22They have two remaining.
00:55:26And here's a pivotal play.
00:55:30It'll be third and three.
00:55:34Britt Schirmer's defense. There's the
00:55:38defensive coordinator for the Cardinals. And this is a defense that needs to make
00:55:42something happen right here on this play, Jim. Remember they never got the ball back
00:55:46in the last six minutes the first time this season.
00:55:50Kosar calls the timeout with one second on the down clock.
00:55:54And that draws a deep breath
00:55:58from Jimmy Johnson over on the sidelines.
00:56:02He knows he's working under a bit of a handicap with Bernie right now with the offense being
00:56:06the way it is. And there's got to be the conference going on in this
00:56:10situation where Jimmy wants to know from upstairs and Norv Turner
00:56:14what do we do in this spot? What is the play? You see Norv there
00:56:18center of the screen with the glasses on. What do we do in this
00:56:22situation? Where do we want to go? Bernie, what do you feel the most comfortable with?
00:56:26It's third and about, we call it two yards, Jim.
00:56:30I think you've got to like the fact you go after that right
00:56:34side. If you're going to run it, you've got to run it there. A pass in this situation
00:56:38doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the Cowboys
00:56:42unless they've got a real package of short yards, goal line things that Bernie feels comfortable
00:56:46with.
00:56:50Third down three.
00:56:54Eric Hill, Ken Harvey
00:56:58come in. It's third down and let's call it
00:57:02a short three. Mark Two and A observing
00:57:06line up on that left side.
00:57:10Almost got the Cardinals to jump over on the side. Hill needs to make
00:57:14the play. Gets away from him. Smith has the first down
00:57:18for the Dallas Cowboys. Eric Hill had him.
00:57:22Needed to get him. He was right
00:57:26there one on one with Emmitt Smith and that is why this guy is so good.
00:57:30You've heard the term that an offensive player in bad weather has the advantage because he knows
00:57:34where he's going and the defender doesn't. Emmitt Smith knows where he's going
00:57:38and there's nothing Hill can do about it.
00:57:42On models like Hill, they don't put those power brakes on them like they put the power
00:57:46brakes on the Smiths in this world. The Smiths and the Barry Sanders
00:57:50they're put together in a whole different factory. That's the second time in his
00:57:54career he's gone over 100 yards receiving.
00:58:02Fouling ahead for five, maybe six.
00:58:06And we approach three minutes remaining. Two and A with a good block on that left side.
00:58:14Timeout by the Cardinals. Leaving them with one.
00:58:18And the Cardinals are looking at a situation and Joe Bugle
00:58:22knows it. Looks just like the last time they met. You mentioned it
00:58:26earlier. I mean, give the ball back to Dallas and they'll throw
00:58:30if they have to but Joe Bugle knows the Dallas Cowboys will just want to play bludgeon
00:58:34ball with them from this point out.
00:58:42Kosar has been the quarterback really the second
00:58:46half and has played three quarters of the day
00:58:50if you averaged it out. Maybe even a little more than that.
00:58:54Garrett was in for three series.
00:58:58And Kosar has done a fabulous job subbing for Troy Aikman there and you know
00:59:02Troy is going to be out. He missed this game. He'll probably miss Atlanta.
00:59:06He might miss Miami. They can't take a chance on Troy's thing being
00:59:10a lingering hamstring like Joe Montana's and Kosar has
00:59:14proven today he can handle this offense and guide this team.
00:59:18Second down, five.
00:59:22Smith.
00:59:26Boy, working hard to get three yards. Zordich
00:59:30calls for the last timeout. That's it for Phoenix.
00:59:342.53 remaining.
00:59:39And they cannot stop the clock again.
00:59:43Phoenix only the two minute warning ahead.
01:00:02We'd like to welcome the audience that has been watching the
01:00:06Atlanta Falcons shut out the Los Angeles Rams.
01:00:1013-0. Third win of the year for the Falcons.
01:00:14Here, Dallas leads 20-15. Under three minutes remaining.
01:00:18Jim Nantz and Randy Cross on the scene at Texas Stadium.
01:00:22Dallas led 17-0 at halftime. Cardinals scored 10-3.
01:00:26Dallas got a field goal to make it 20-10.
01:00:30Then a safety by the Cardinals defense forcing an intentional
01:00:34grounding in the end zone by Kosar. Then a field goal by Greg Davis.
01:00:38And it's 20-15, but the Cardinals are out of timeouts in a third
01:00:42and short situation coming up for Dallas. All eight plays on this
01:00:46drive. Their money guy Emmitts touched the ball.
01:00:5037 to Phoenix. Play action.
01:00:54Fake. They toss it and it's dropped by the rookie Joey Mickey.
01:00:58A rookie from Oklahoma.
01:01:02Dave Duerson was blitzing the quarterback. He came
01:01:06rushing in on Kosar and the Cardinals will get the ball back.
01:01:10This is a quick roll or as
01:01:14quick roll as Bernie's going to do, but he throws the ball in a very bad
01:01:18spot for Joey Mickey. He gets it right in the hands. The ball was put
01:01:22exactly where it should have been. The catch wasn't made.
01:01:26John Jett standing near midfield. Anthony Edwards
01:01:30at the ten.
01:01:38Cowboys in position to down it near the twelve.
01:01:46The flag is down at the line of scrimmage.
01:01:54It's against the Cowboys.
01:02:00The Cardinals
01:02:04going to make him kick it again just on the chance
01:02:08that they get a little bit better field position. Ineligible
01:02:12downfield on the kicking team. Number 59.
01:02:16Five yards. Still fourth down.
01:02:20This is one of those situations where
01:02:24I guess you have to gamble for it. It could backfire a little bit too.
01:02:28You could end up pinned back at the inside of the five yard line.
01:02:32You saw the kick that Rich Camarillo put on Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys that really sort of
01:02:36created that safety situation earlier. That's the bad
01:02:40side of the coin. The good side of the coin from the Phoenix Cardinals standpoint is they're hoping this ball
01:02:44goes into the end zone and they get it out on the 20 or they're hoping for a shank.
01:02:52Ineligible downfield on the kicking team is
01:02:56number 59. First down. Finish.
01:03:00You know this season the punter for the Cowboys John Jett has only one
01:03:04touchback and ten times he's punted inside of the
01:03:0820. So tough call but
01:03:12Cardinals elect to start a drive where they must take it now.
01:03:1688 yards from their own 12 yard line. No timeouts.
01:03:20And 2.37 remaining. Well they pushed it back and decided differently.
01:03:24This puts all the pressure. Everything goes on
01:03:28to the quarterback at this point. Chris Chandler has got to make the plays.
01:03:38In the area of Larry Sinners and avoiding a sack back at the two yard line.
01:03:42Tony Tolbert had an arm on Chandler.
01:03:542.32 remaining.
01:04:02Second down and ten.
01:04:10Short pass. Sinners straight ahead. Sinners across the 20. First down to the
01:04:1425. And for those of you who are just now
01:04:18tuning in to watch the 25th year anniversary
01:04:22special for 60 minutes, that will be coming up next.
01:04:26That will follow this game. It is coming down
01:04:30to the end with two minutes. Approaching two minutes to go. Cardinals
01:04:34trailing by five. Chandler
01:04:38left side. Ricky Prohl diving and
01:04:42that will bring us to the two minute warning.
01:04:46Ricky Prohl near the first down.
01:04:52They'll measure for it during the two minute warning. Dallas
01:04:56looking for its seventh straight win. Trying to cling on. And Bugle
01:05:00and the Cardinals are threatening.
01:05:04Jim Nantz and Randy Cross back at Texas
01:05:08Stadium. The Cardinals have stormed back from 17 down to within five.
01:05:12Randy with two minutes remaining. They do have a first down. How surprised are you?
01:05:16I'm not real surprised at this point. Joe Bugle has made a lot of gambles and his gambles
01:05:20have paid off. The key right now is going to be Chris Chandler, the quarterback.
01:05:24I was on a team that was known for great comebacks, but I never had anybody refer to me to the great comebacks
01:05:28the offensive line made. The comebacks are led by quarterbacks.
01:05:32This is one they'll remember for a long time if Chris Chandler can pull this off.
01:05:36Bugle called this game today the ultimate challenge
01:05:40for his three and six Cardinals. And across the middle, they're now in Dallas
01:05:44territory at the 47 with Ricky Prohl. And on the last
01:05:48two plays for the first time really in this game, Chandler has managed
01:05:52to get the ball to his wide receivers. No more dumping and dinking to the running
01:05:56backs. He's found a way to get the ball to Ricky Prohl. No timeouts for
01:06:00the Cardinals, but now from the Dallas 48. Chandler.
01:06:04Hit. Fumble picked up by Rick Cunningham. And he's down at the
01:06:0845. Chandler may be hurt.
01:06:12He was flattened by Jim Jeffcoat.
01:06:16That's a rough one for Chandler because he never sees this coming. Watch the rush.
01:06:32We have an incomplete pass on the field.
01:06:36They're saying the arm was moving forward as he was hit.
01:06:40How about the moves with Rick Cunningham?
01:06:44Right helmet under the arm. I mean, Cunningham does an admirable job of picking
01:06:48up and going afterwards. But for the Phoenix Cardinals, the health of 17
01:06:52is the most important thing. And there won't be much health if he keeps getting hit like that.
01:06:56Please set the game clock to 125.
01:07:00One minute, 25 seconds. Thank you. Put an extra five seconds on the
01:07:04game clock. Sixty minutes. The anniversary show is coming up next.
01:07:08So it'll be second and ten from the 48.
01:07:12The backup quarterback today is Steve Bermine, the starter most of the season.
01:07:16But he has had a knee injury the last two weeks. So Chandler
01:07:20roughed up but ready on second down.
01:07:26Cole again. Bill Bates drags him down at the 41.
01:07:30Field goal will not do him any good at all.
01:07:34They trail by five. But driving, having started this series at their own
01:07:3812, having come back with a 17-0
01:07:42deficit at halftime.
01:07:46Third and three, and that was Kenneth Gant knocking it
01:07:50away. Now it'll be fourth down, Randy.
01:07:54You gotta have the first down here, and you gotta get the ball past the first down
01:07:58marker. You can't throw it behind it and hope someone
01:08:02breaks a tackle. This pass must go past the first down marker to give
01:08:06him a chance to get another play where it's going to be critical to break
01:08:10tackles. You don't worry about breaking tackles. You throw it past the marker.
01:08:141-0-2 remaining. Fourth and three.
01:08:18And let's watch.
01:08:30Intercepted!
01:08:34Kenneth Gant!
01:08:38And the Cowboys can start the
01:08:42celebration. They'll have their seventh straight win,
01:08:46their longest win streak in ten years.
01:08:58Gant drops an interception, but gets a chance to come
01:09:02back and make up for it. Dallas bringing the blitz.
01:09:06Gant does a nice job of laying off inside, sort of suckering Chandler,
01:09:10and when Chandler goes two-pro, stepping in front and making the pick.
01:09:14That short stuff across the middle had been open the entire
01:09:18second half, but on a fourth down play, the Cowboys jump in
01:09:22with the interception, and now they'll run out the clock.

01:09:46snap, and the Cowboys will be seven and two
