00:00:15The Dallas Cowboys were tearing through the NFL schedule with a seven-game winning streak,
00:00:19but now they have lost their last two games, including the improbable Thanksgiving Day
00:00:23letdown against the Dolphins.
00:00:24But it's not a problem that can't be overcome for the defending Super Bowl champions and
00:00:30their quarterback Troy Aikman.
00:00:31Because we've accomplished something that a lot of people have not been able to do,

00:03:03They still think they can be in it, but this is a team that's been decimated by injuries.

00:03:08Everybody's moaning about injuries, but these guys have a very legitimate beef.
00:03:11They really take the cake, and it comes on the heels of losing people like Keith Jackson,
00:03:16Keith Byers, and Reggie White to free agency last season, and now this year, Randall Cunningham
00:03:21down in the fourth game with a leg injury.
00:03:23He might be back before the end of the year.
00:03:24Fred Barnett, the Pro Bowl wide receiver, out for the season.
00:03:25Byron Evans, the middle linebacker, is still out.
00:03:26It goes on and on.
00:03:27They have started 41 different players this year, but Rich Kotite said on the field about
00:03:36an hour ago.
00:03:38He said, just you wait and see.
00:03:39We're going to play great tonight.
00:03:40They'll try to do it on the ground, win the time of possession game with Herschel Walker
00:03:44and Juan Hebron carrying the ball, and they need to shore it up defensively.
00:03:47They have the fridge now.
00:03:48William Perry, they didn't have him five weeks ago when Dallas beat Philadelphia, and Emmitt
00:03:53Smith ran for 237 yards, but that was five weeks ago, and Dan, the Dallas Cowboys three
00:03:59weeks ago looked as if they were a lock for a second straight Super Bowl.
00:04:02Now, everybody around here biting their nails.
00:04:05They really are, Al, but one thing they do know, and it's the month of December, and
00:04:09the month of December for most people means that they get into the holiday spirit, but
00:04:13in the National Football League, the month of December is where teams that make the playoffs
00:04:17and do well in the playoffs look back and say, here's where we shifted gears, and that's
00:04:22exactly what the Dallas Cowboys have to do, is shift gears to that next level.
00:04:26Take their offensive troika of Aikman, Smith, and Michael Irvin.
00:04:32A year ago at this time, they had accounted for 32 touchdowns between the three of them.
00:04:36Now, look, this year, only 15 touchdowns among the three of them.
00:04:41That's a huge difference.
00:04:43The Dallas Cowboys will look back at this game tonight and say, here's where we flipped
00:04:47the switch and went on to bigger things, or they'll look back to tonight and say, here's
00:04:51where we knew we weren't as good as we were a year ago.
00:04:55And Eddie Murray will flip the switch on the kickoff.
00:04:58The longtime Detroit Lion, who was picked up after the start of this season to replace
00:05:03Lynn Elliott.
00:05:04Herschel Walker, who does everything, even plays on special teams for the Eagles, back
00:05:09to receive.
00:05:10As the kick comes down to the four-yard line, Herschel Walker takes it there, and running
00:05:15laterally along the seven, can only get back to the 10-yard line, a six-yard runback, and
00:05:23the Cowboys pin the Eagles deep.

00:05:28The longtime Steeler, now at the helm, guided them to the win last week against Washington,

00:05:38With him, Walker and Vaughn Hebron, the rookie.

00:05:46Bollinger, Shad, Alexander, their number one draft choice, Holmes, and Anton Davis, the
00:05:52interior five.
00:05:54Calvin Williams is the man in motion, and they begin with a two-back set, give it to
00:05:59Walker, and he goes next to nowhere.
00:06:01Dickson Edwards, the outside linebacker, to wrap him up.
00:06:05Now, the Cowboys are minus Charles Haley.
00:06:08Bad back, he's been limited this year in his effectiveness, and he's inactive tonight.
00:06:13Thus, Tolbert, Casillas, Leon Lett gets the start up front, with Maryland coming off the
00:06:18bench.
00:06:19Edwards, Ken Norton now playing in the middle, and Darren Smith, the rookie outside.
00:06:22And the secondary has been solid and consistent, Smith and Brown, Woodson and Everett.
00:06:28Second down and nine.
00:06:31A look at Leon Lett, who was involved in the play 11 days ago, that cost Dallas the game,
00:06:40but tonight gets the start.
00:06:42And in the middle of this one, Leon Lett is right there, as Vaughn Hebron, the rookie
00:06:48from Virginia Tech, can't get on track.
00:06:50It'll be third down, and Randall Cunningham in cities, walking up and down the sideline.
00:06:55And I think we saw already what Jimmy Johnson wanted to see from the Cowboys, and that is,
00:07:00after their loss on Thanksgiving Day Thursday, to play with a frenzy.
00:07:04He said, we can't strut anymore, we have to come out and play like the Dallas Cowboys,
00:07:08and that means we have to play in a frenzy, and we have seen that here in the early going.

00:07:18With four receivers in this set, and Walker staying in the block.
00:07:21The catch is made up at the 16 by Victor Bailey, but short of the first down,
00:07:26and it's three and out for Philadelphia on their first possession,
00:07:29as Gant and Bates converge on the stop.

00:07:33They wanted a couple of helmets on every receiver, hustling on the part of their linebackers,
00:07:38and they got it on that first series.
00:07:41Well, I know you mentioned in your open that Richie Cotite told you that the Eagles
00:07:45were going to play well.
00:07:47That's exactly what we heard from Jimmy Johnson yesterday,
00:07:49and that's certainly the way they have started defensively.
00:07:52The Eagles hunting, fielded at the 39 by Kevin Williams,
00:07:56who ran one back all the way on Thanksgiving, but this time he is stopped at the 39-yard line.
00:08:04As Troy Aikman and the offensive unit come out, James Joseph made the last tackle.
00:08:09Aikman, first guy picked in 1989 in the entire draft out of UCLA, now in his fifth year.
00:08:15Super Bowl MVP last season, Emmitt Smith and Daryl Johnston in the backfield.
00:08:19Irvin and Harper are the wideouts.
00:08:21Novacek caught more passes last year than any other tight end.
00:08:25Toonay, Newton, Stepnoski, Golgin, and Williams, the Super Bowl interior five.

00:10:04Got in there to help his teammate Mike Flores.
00:10:06But I think he's going to see a lot of action tonight from these big outside wide receivers.

00:10:14They say he's tough.
00:10:15They like him on the corner.
00:10:16But he'll have his hands full tonight.
00:10:18They're going to have to help him out against 6'2", Michael Irvin who loves to fight little cornerbacks for the ball.

00:10:48So the Eagles are hopeful that maybe he'll be back out on the practice field possibly this week.

00:11:15The Eagles have been better against the run than they have over the beginning of the season.

00:11:23And that's where you really stop the running as we look at one of the great defensive coaches in this game, Bud Carson.
00:11:28He's juggling some very small linebackers.
00:11:31They average about 230 pounds.
00:11:33Britt Hager replaced Byron Evans in the middle, Dan.
00:11:36He's 225 pounds.
00:11:38That's tough.
00:11:39And William Thomas on the outside is only 218.
00:11:42And meanwhile, this Cowboy offensive line has four guys over 300, three over 325.

00:14:12And this time, Eric Allen comes in real high on a tackle on Emmitt Smith.
00:14:16And we're going to have to see if this is a pattern that's beginning to develop.

00:14:22Look how high Allen is right there with his hand up in the face of Emmitt Smith.
00:14:26Now, that type of a tackle may do some damage to Smith's head.
00:14:30But it is not going to tackle him.
00:14:32He'll run right through that every time.

00:14:36This is the eighth play of the drive.
00:14:38And Aikman is lucky that Allen didn't pick it off with a pass intended for Harper.
00:14:43I don't know how he missed it.
00:14:45That's just a poorly thrown ball.

00:14:48It moved to the inside and Aikman hit that one right in the head.
00:14:52Now for the Eagles, a tough assignment.
00:14:54They bring in their dime package.

00:14:59And just either Harper switched up on him or he just threw it poorly.
00:15:02But now is when Jay Novacek, the tight end, comes into play for the Cowboys.

00:15:10You can't treat him like a tight end.

00:15:49And he's having a great year.
00:15:50But he just could not control Emmitt Smith.
00:15:55Well, when you're a 16-point underdog like the Eagles are tonight,
00:16:00you don't get many missed opportunities.
00:16:02And that's what they had when Eric Allen didn't intercept that pass.

00:30:46they begin at the 31 yard line they picked up only one first down in two possessions thus far

00:31:05throws and the catch is made by Calvin Williams and he has a first down out of bounds at the 45

00:31:18almost not every game this year but just about every snap this season so this is a very unusual
00:31:24sight and he's the guy that the Eagles in their preparation for this game clearly identified as
00:31:29a player they wanted to work against they wanted to work his side of the field you see that he
00:31:34runs off playing the zone he knows he's got help underneath and he kind of comes down and
00:31:42appears to land on the left side of his hip didn't look bad at all no it didn't appear to be
00:31:49anything that's that's visible obviously obviously that hurt him but
00:31:54Brown's still down Larry Brown has played all but three snaps all season in 11 games
00:32:04it looks very routine from that angle they're going to move Kevin Smith over to his corner now
00:32:11flip him to the other side and bring Dave Thomas in a rookie from Tennessee
00:32:23and there is Thomas so this is a very unusual sight because Smith and Brown Woodson and Everett
00:32:29have been together and have been injury free all year
00:32:32and it worked very well as a unit but you can see right there that they
00:32:36were trying to get Larry Brown to get up and he's he's showing no he's going to try it now
00:32:42he might like to hope that he just knocked the wind out of himself and look that way
00:32:45fell right on his stomach local boy played his college football in Fort Worth at TCU
00:32:52and now the eagles begin at the 46th first and 10 is Brewster
00:33:04and it's Williams and he is taken down by Darren Woodson not a whole lot of mercy in this league
00:33:10is there they found Dave Thomas the pass pattern immediately going to where the rookie is lined up
00:33:16but then again they're going to give Thomas help they've got zone coverage to that side of the
00:33:22field so you see Thomas continues to drop on back and stay out of the play
00:33:28this this game is not lacking for emotion on parts of the teammates of both the Cowboys and
00:33:36Eagles these guys will be going at each other all night regardless of what the score is second and
00:33:42two come fake and then a pass that is incomplete led Heath Sherman too far it'll be third down
00:33:52boy you can see that coming that's one of those deals where Darren Smith is sorry he fell down
00:33:58he saw a chance to really take a shot at a guy and I think Smith was going to
00:34:02relish the chance to take it all of a sudden Sherman went to the ground and
00:34:08his target disappeared off the radar screen I think much to the chagrin of Darren Smith
00:34:13here's Brown back in the game so he only misses two snaps
00:34:17returns to his spotted right corner it's third down and two at the 46 yard line
00:34:23and Bristow throws in traffic and jams it into Mark Favaro for a first down to the 41 yard line
00:34:30Mark Favaro who appeared to have retired in 1991 but made every start for the Eagles last year
00:34:36and this as well coming off the line of scrimmage like the old days with the Giants
00:34:42somehow really held on to the football nobody had got a hand on it had a devastating knee injury
00:34:47a lot of people thought that his career was over the Giants really didn't want him to come back
00:34:52thought that he had no chance of doing it went to Cleveland for a while and here he is it doesn't
00:34:58even wear a brace on his knee here's Herschel Walker through the middle and Walker finds his
00:35:03way to the 31 and very close to a first down break the thought of a first down
00:35:11break the thought of it being 1993 and watching Mark Favaro perform at the level that he's
00:35:16performing is it's miraculous it really is he had a bone graft he hurt it real bad in 89
00:35:24limped through 90 and then missed all of 91 and the Giants in all honesty they loved him
00:35:30and they just thought it was in his best interest not to come back went to Cleveland and

00:38:38quarterback gets to him the more he likes it so you really you're really betwixt in between how
00:38:43big a cushion do you give him right it's not an assignment that I would really relish every time
00:38:48they read that coverage they're going to go to it here's Emmitt Smith picking up two remember Emmitt
00:38:56Smith when the season began he was the big story we were there for a Monday night game as shaken up
00:39:01on the last play as Clyde Simmons who's been bothered by a bump shoulder all year but Emmitt

00:39:11contend for a rushing title which would be his third straight I think Clyde Simmons you really
00:39:18have to wonder how much football the Eagles are going to get out of him tonight he didn't practice

00:39:26got a bad back a bad knee and things for the Eagles just seem to be going from bad to worse
00:39:37Clyde Simmons led the league last year in sacks with 19 this year he has three Reggie White is
00:39:42gone Simmons seeing a lot of double team and that's one of the reasons the Colts and the Eagles are
00:39:49tied for last in the league in sacks and the Eagles have Tim Harris on their roster who had
00:39:5417 sacks a year ago and he probably won't be back at all this season another of the walking wounded
00:40:01I don't know that in a three-hour show here we have time to document all the things that have
00:40:05gone wrong physically for the Eagles Clyde Simmons you got to wonder if they're going to get any
00:40:12meaningful football out of him if even if he's able to come back in tonight you know we had
00:40:16Dallas and Philadelphia October the 5th of a year ago and I was just looking at my chart from that
00:40:22game and there are four defensive starters on that field now that were on the field
00:40:27for Philadelphia last October the 5th when these two teams met during regular season
00:40:30meanwhile Philadelphia had trouble deciding who's to be on the field with third and three upcoming
00:40:36and thus they're compelled by Carson's unit is to take a timeout 9 36 to go in the half
00:40:42downtown the big D sparkling night temperature in the mid-50s and we're a little west to
00:40:50the city of Dallas in Irving Texas where Dallas leads 10 to nothing one of the reasons Philly
00:40:56might have taken that timeout is Clyde Simmons was ready to come back into the game and he's
00:41:00in there right now it's third down and three and they have the right people in
00:41:03Dallas at the 39 yard line 9 36 to go in the half 10 nothing Cowboys
00:41:08Nova check in motion and the Eagles jumping at the line of scrimmage a flag is down Smith breaking
