00:00:00The Kansas City Chiefs own the NFL's best record, yet not everyone has labeled them
00:00:06the best.
00:00:07So the Chiefs come to Dallas today with more than victory on their minds.
00:00:11They arrive searching for the recognition their record warrants, seeking the respect
00:00:16their season merits, vying, vying for validation as the NFL's best.
00:00:25Today's challenge for the Chiefs, the Cowboys, owners of two Super Bowl titles in the 90s,
00:00:30branded as the league's most explosive offense, led by a triumvirate of established stars.
00:00:35Beat these Cowboys in their home, you have instant validation.
00:00:41For at least one Kansas City player, this game is a long-awaited opportunity.
00:00:46Most of quarterback Steve Bono's big game experience has been watching from the sideline
00:00:50as his mentor, Joe Montana, led their teams to victory.
00:00:56Now the Kansas City Chiefs are his.
00:00:58If he is to emerge from the long shadow cast by Super Joe, he needs to engineer a victory
00:01:05in a game like this.
00:01:07Then there's the Chiefs' 35-year-old running back, Marcus Allen.
00:01:10He knows the joy of success.
00:01:12Twelve years ago, he left his stamp on Super Bowl XVIII with an indelible MVP performance.
00:01:19Marcus relishes the opportunity to prove he still competes with the best.
00:01:25Today, Texas Stadium provides that stage.
00:01:32Head coach Marty Schottenheimer has led his teams to three AFC championship games.
00:01:37This season may be his finest coaching job, but in a world where you're only as good as
00:01:42your last game, Schottenheimer must win in Dallas for his team to be considered among
00:01:47the elite.
00:01:49So Kansas City is in Dallas with an opportunity to earn the nation's respect, to be stamped
00:01:54a serious Super Bowl contender.
00:01:56An upset victory against the Cowboys would be their validation.
00:02:18A beautiful Thanksgiving Day in Big D, Irving, Texas, and famed Texas Stadium sold out to
00:02:27see the teams with the best records in football, Kansas City, 10-1, a record seven consecutive
00:02:33wins against the Dallas Cowboys, 9-2.
00:02:36The tradition continues on this Thanksgiving Day, and we wish all of your loved ones and
00:02:44your friends the very best on this day.
00:02:47And if you're just enjoying a little dessert, we'll keep some off the side.
00:02:50We're all coming home eventually.
00:02:53Marty Schottenheimer looking for that validation, and we talked to him yesterday.
00:02:56He had many ways in which he figured Kansas City could win.
00:03:00Most important thing he said was, I believe that my 46 players are better than Dallas's
00:03:0646.
00:03:07He also said right after that, Dick, that his 46 players, he has the best depth he has
00:03:12ever had on a football team.
00:03:14Now, they interchange everywhere, offensively and defensively.
00:03:16Obviously, they don't interchange a quarterback, but he also said this.
00:03:20He said, you take about their starting 22, they may be a little bit better than our starting
00:03:2522.
00:03:26Now, how do they beat the Dallas Cowboys?
00:03:27Let's take a look at defensively.
00:03:29They have to do it there.
00:03:30The one thing they have to do, not allow the big play, and most importantly, and this is
00:03:34most importantly, Phil, that you cannot let Emma Smith beat you with the big play.
00:03:38You got to try to slow him down.
00:03:40You're right, Paul.
00:03:41I think what they're going to do here, they learned something from the San Francisco
00:03:4449ers a couple of weeks ago, who came in here and played aggressive, especially on the receivers,
00:03:49Michael Irvin.
00:03:50Look for Kansas City defense to hit him, to double cover him, and also look for Mark Collins'
00:03:55safety to walk up on Jay Novacek, to beat him around the line of scrimmage, so Troy
00:03:59Aikman has to hold that ball just a second longer.
00:04:02On offense, look for Kansas City offense to run it hard at this Dallas defensive line
00:04:07that is beat up and has injuries.
00:04:09That's where they have to have success.
00:04:10That could be critical because the Cowboys had no less than 22 players listed on the
00:04:15injury list for the NFL office prior to this game.
00:04:18With more on that that includes some prime players, we go down to the field and Jim Gray.
00:04:23All right.
00:04:24Thank you very much, Dick.
00:04:25Well, special teams could really be a problem for the Cowboys today.
00:04:29During the warm-up, punter John Jett had to leave the field.
00:04:31He was taken back.
00:04:32He has bad back spasms, so Barry Switzer, the head coach, tells us that Chris Bonio
00:04:37will have to punt today.
00:04:38The last time he punted was two years ago in college at Louisiana Tech.
00:04:42Now, as for Deion Sanders, he has a very sore, cold left groin.
00:04:45He will not play on offense today, according to Barry Switzer.
00:04:48He also probably will not play on special teams.
00:04:51If he does, it will only be as a decoy.
00:04:53Dick?
00:04:54Thanks, Jim, and we're ready to go.
00:04:55The Cowboys, with that top-rated running offense, will get it first.
00:04:56Lynn Elliott, a former Cowboy, sends it on its way in this Thanksgiving Day game underway.
00:04:57Kevin Williams, a former Cowboy, sends it on its way.
00:04:58Aikman with 11 touchdowns, only four interceptions, and he's been sacked only seven times, because
00:05:22on this Thanksgiving, you can find the beat of the Cowboys right there.
00:05:27Two and a Newton, Donaldson, Allen, and Williams, no line in the NFL bigger.
00:05:32Aikman has the sensational Emmitt Smith, 20 touchdowns, the blocker Daryl Johnston Moose,
00:05:37Michael Irvin has 77 catches, Williams, the other wide out, Jay Novacek tied in, 50 catches,
00:05:42and in the three wide, Corey Fleming enters.
00:05:43Emmitt Smith, hit in the backfield, and able to struggle back to the plate.
00:05:44Sally Amua was able to invade, make the initial hit, Simeon finished the job at the 30.
00:06:06Here are the men in red, and they have many fans from Kansas City here at Texas Stadium.
00:06:10Neal Smith, Joe Phillips, Sally Amua, and Booker, the front four, George Jamison, Tracy
00:06:16Simeon, and all pro Derrick Thomas, the backers Carter and Hastie at the corners, White for
00:06:22the injured Brian Washington starts, and Mark Collins, the former Giant, Bayless and Anderson
00:06:27come in, and they're nickel.
00:06:28Second and 10, Emmitt Smith.
00:06:29Just take a look at the hole, this is a little bit of a delay to Emmitt Smith, but the hole
00:06:45is right there.
00:06:46I mean, he, he, here's a guy, the late new tall season, this guy runs the daylight, you
00:06:50give him a hole, there's the hole, you get upfield, you, you can't get back to him.
00:06:56Emmitt Smith, looking for a possible 2,000 yard season, it's within his grasp, he'll
00:07:00have to have a sensational finish, and he'll probably set the record for most touchdowns
00:07:04in a year.
00:07:0524, John Riggins is the current mark, he has 20 already, Kendall Watkins, a second tight
00:07:12end in, a rookie from Mississippi State, third and three, Aitken's first throw, can't make
00:07:16an overcheck, first down at the 43, Simeon and Collins on the hit, good, good job by,
00:07:25Troy Aikman right there, finding a little soft spot in the zone, Jay Novacek, watch
00:07:30him right here, he's gonna go down, and hook up right here, the fullback in the flat, makes
00:07:34the defense, pick a receiver, you see right there, Troy, good timing, puts it right where
00:07:40Jay Novacek can, Joe, Jay Novacek can catch it, and can't be knocked away.
00:07:44No one in the 90s, tight ends, but more than Novacek, he has 51 already this year.
00:07:51First down, fake to Smith, Aikman eludes the rush, and Michael Irvin has his first catch,
00:07:58and a first down at the Kansas City 43.
00:08:01Now Phil, I'm seeing something a little bit different than I didn't think I would see
00:08:05in this ballgame, I'm seeing the both corners, Phil, playing man to man, that time James
00:08:09Hastie.
00:08:10Well that's something they wanted to do, they wanted to come out here today, and play Michael
00:08:13Irvin one on one, James Hastie right there heading one on one, and Michael did a good
00:08:18job of driving him off, and doing that comeback, something the Cowboys are famous for.
00:08:23As you can see, James Hastie trying to jam Michael Irvin at the line of scrimmage, lost
00:08:27sight of where he was, that's why he was so wide open.
00:08:3014 yards on the play.
00:08:36Aikman again to throw, he's going wide, has a man open, and knocked away Dale Carter from
00:08:42Michael Irvin.
00:08:44Well there's your one on one coverage again, now, when you take a look at Carter playing
00:08:50Michael Irvin, you talk about closing the ball, had a little bit too much here, and
00:08:54enabled Carter to get there, the ball actually hits Michael Irvin in the chest, but Carter
00:08:59had his hand up, did a great job.
00:09:01Well something the Cowboys said they wanted to do today is come out and throw the ball
00:09:04deep early, right there you see a little stutter goal by Michael Irvin, he gets away from Dale
00:09:09Carter, but Dale Carter, like you said Paul, has great speed, makes it up.
00:09:13Carter leads the Chiefs four interceptions this year, made the Pro Bowl last year.
00:09:18From Tennessee, second and ten, to Smith.
00:09:23Nothing inside, so he goes outside, cut down, just as he was picking up steam at the 38
00:09:28yard line, Dale Carter made the stop.
00:09:32Emmitt Smith, he is credited with the fact that he takes two full body massages a week
00:09:38for his being healthier at this stage of the year than past seasons.
00:09:42Well that would make me feel good to get a couple body massages every week, but that
00:09:45is one of the keys, and he's kind of learned that, I think, over the years, take better
00:09:50care of yourself during the week, so you can avoid those little injuries.
00:09:53Thurman Thomas, he said if you're listening, get two full body massages a week and you'll
00:09:58feel a lot better.
00:10:00Third and a long four with Novacek in motion.
00:10:05Underneath, Michael Irvin, first down, as he eludes the hit from Derrick Thomas, steps
00:10:13out at the 29.
00:10:14Now, Phil, I'm going to tell you something, I don't care what you can say about it, what
00:10:18great receivers and all the stuff that is happening, but when you are Troy Aikman and
00:10:22you have this much time, and look how long it takes to run this play.
00:10:25Well that's right, time is always an important aspect of the passing game, but something
00:10:29new the Cowboys are doing, still on the page from the 49ers, Michael Irvin running those
00:10:33short routes across the middle, letting everybody else clear it out, Troy Aikman getting the
00:10:37ball to him.
00:10:38And Irvin's been in a funk, as described by the people here in Dallas, ever since that
00:10:4349er loss in Dallas, he wouldn't even talk up, that's unusual.
00:10:48Derrick Smith, dragged down by Thomas, on first down at the 27, a yard, maybe two on
00:10:54the play.
00:10:55Well, Sutton, the Kansas City Chiefs defense was telling us, and the coaches, they had
00:11:01to keep the Cowboys out of third, and three and four, that's where they're their best.
00:11:05And right here you see Derrick Thomas, coming up, trying to make the play, does a good job
00:11:09and keeps Emmitt Smith from getting outside.
00:11:11Thomas, who's made his reputation as a great pass rusher, has seven sacks again this year,
00:11:16but doing more tackling, he's had more tackles this year than in many seasons past.
00:11:21Being employed as the complete linebacker.
00:11:26All three first downs by pass for Aikman on this opening drive, and it's Irvin,
00:11:33hit immediately by Carter at the 21, where it'll be third down and about two.
00:11:39Well, something interesting we're seeing so far, Michael Irvin right now, every time Troy
00:11:43Aikman drops back to pass, he looked at Jay Novacek one time, but Michael Irvin is always
00:11:47the primary receiver in their passing game.
00:11:50We watched him practice Friday and yesterday, and I made the comment to Dick and Paul,
00:11:54he threw about 20 passes and 18 of them were to Michael Irvin.
00:11:58Tenth play of the drive as Irvin is out.
00:12:04Kendall Watkins replaces him, he weighs 300 pounds, a tight end, number 83.
00:12:10The tenth play of the drive, Emmitt Smith easily picking up the first down inside the 15.
00:12:17And that young Watkins threw the block.
00:12:21And the Cowboys, no one better than Dallas in that red zone inside the 20.
00:12:3068% touchdowns in 44 trips inside the 20.
00:12:35Well, when you can run the football like they do, that's one of the reasons why they have
00:12:39great success, and also they protect the passer who is a precision thrower, and they have
00:12:44a great receiver, Michael Irvin, that all leads to success.
00:12:47Three drive, over six minutes long, and Emmitt Smith picks up the right hand.
00:12:51He has it, touchdown!
00:12:53Number 21 for Emmitt Smith.
00:12:56You know, the one thing about this guy, I mean, Nate Newt told us, here's a guy that runs to daylight.
00:13:19There are a lot of guys in the league that run to darkness, and I'll explain about the darkness.
00:13:24Drive for point by Chris Boniol on his Novacek's hold, and the Cowboys, in six minutes and
00:13:3319 seconds, go 70 yards on the opening drive of the game, 11 plays, 15 yard touchdown for
00:13:40the incomparable Emmitt Smith.
00:13:42At age 26, this man already with 92 NFL rushing touchdowns.
00:13:50Touchdown!
00:14:21The talented triumvirate here in Dallas, well on that opening drive, Aikman four for five,
00:14:31Emmitt rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown, Irvin three catches, 29 yards, and Emmitt
00:14:37Smith puts all of those touchdown balls, as you know, in storage, and now has 96 in six
00:14:44seasons, less than six full.
00:14:47Boniol to kick it off, 7-0 Dallas, and he roots a deep spinner.
00:14:53It's a Marek Vanover, the rookie from Florida State, who has been outstanding, takes the
00:14:58hit, and falls forward at the 32-yard line.
00:15:02A little extra curricular, but it'll be Kansas City, and it's 32, the Chiefs' first chance
00:15:07when we return.
00:15:10And Apple Farms down to the Lone Star State, their national sport, football.
00:15:187-0 Dallas on Emmitt Smith's 15-yard run to cap the opening drive, and now Steve Bono
00:15:24and the Kansas City Chiefs take their turn.
00:15:27Hands it off inside to Kimball Anders, and the fullback will play it at Houston, hit
00:15:33by Tolbert in Maryland after a gain of two.
00:15:36Holt, Zott, Gronard, Shields, and Sigler the starting offensive line for Kansas City.
00:15:41Bono having an outstanding season, and a man on his way to camp, Marcus Allen.
00:15:46Kimball Anders is their top pass catcher.
00:15:48Dawson and Davis outside, Keith Cash the tight end, and then the three-wide veteran Webster
00:15:54Slaughter comes in.
00:16:00Bono's first pass, and he's going to go long for Willie Davis.
00:16:04Incomplete, and it's Deion Sanders pulling up with a bit of a limp as he slows down,
00:16:10but he points to the crowd and says, hey, they can't get over the top of me.
00:16:15Well, Deion Sanders to the right side of the field, one-on-one, the rest of the defense
00:16:20is on the other side, you see him there with Willie Davis, and something Deion does very
00:16:24well, when the ball is thrown, he attacks it.
00:16:27Yeah, but watch him at the end of it, he lives just a little bit, that leg is not full speed,
00:16:32but I don't know if he really has to be full speed to be faster than anybody else out here.
00:16:36Everyone around the league, coaches and players say, the fastest man they've ever seen in
00:16:40a football uniform.
00:16:42Third down and eight.
00:16:47Bono to the flat, to the tight end, Cash, and he's looking to go on four cowboys,
00:16:52short of the first down, a game of only three.
00:16:57The defense for Dallas, Colbert, he's one of the many on that Burt list,
00:17:02Maryland, Hennings, you know Leon Letts on suspension, and Charles Haley second in the
00:17:06league with ten and a half sacks, Edwards, Miles, for the injured Robert Jones, and middle
00:17:11linebacker and Smith, Sanders and Brown at the corners, Marion and Woodson at safety,
00:17:16Woodson leads and tackles, and in the nickel baits, Scott Case, Bates and Bailey come in.
00:17:22Robert Jones watching from the sidelines as three and out, and Louis Aguiar sends a very
00:17:28high kick to Williams, doesn't call fair catch, and able to pick up five yards on the return
00:17:34to the 25 or 41 yard putt.
00:17:38Midway through the opening quarter, 7-0 Dallas.
00:17:43So what's it going to be, Dion, football or baseball?
00:17:46Both, boss.
00:17:47Both?
00:17:49Both.
00:17:50Offense or defense?
00:17:51Offense or defense?
00:17:52Smith, who has more touchdowns himself than any team has rushing this year, 21 for Emmitt,
00:17:58look at Dion Sanders in the high thigh bandage, he has a groin injury, and earlier today in
00:18:04a scoring fest in Pontiac, Detroit prevails over Minnesota, 44-38, Scott Mitchell through
00:18:10for 410 yards.
00:18:13Eggman, underneath, Johnson.
00:18:17It appears that Kevin Williams on the right side might have been off early.
00:18:22So the Moose, a short game, and he treasures every chance he gets to handle the ball.
00:18:28He's carried only 19 times and caught only 20.
00:18:32Terry Austin signals illegal motion against Dallas.
00:18:35Johnson, who is a one favor throughout the country, even gets fan mail from Saudi Arabia,
00:18:40so his mother is doing a quarterly newsletter.
00:18:43The Moose call goes out around the nation, and he's quite a guy.
00:18:49If you look at J. Novacek, who compliments this wonderful offensive attack, it's just
00:18:56a, Jimmy Johnson once put it, how do you want to die, slow or fast?
00:19:00Pick your poison, that's what he says.
00:19:03First and 15, Emmitt Smith.
00:19:05It's stretched him wide, and that's the attitude the defenses need to deny Smith.
00:19:12He wants to go north and south.
00:19:14Any time you get him running toward the sidelines, it's in your favor, and Thomas makes the hit.
00:19:18Well, Derek Thomas, one of the faster linebackers, and watch him, he's just following down the
00:19:22line of scrimmage.
00:19:23Nobody blocks him, and he gets to Emmitt and pushes him out of bounds.
00:19:25That's just great hustle, and slow motion.
00:19:28Nobody blocks him, and he gets to Emmitt and pushes him out of bounds.
00:19:31That's just great hustle, and speed.
00:19:34Six years in the league, six times to the Pro Bowl, Derek Thomas is an early pick in
00:19:39the 89 draft out of Alabama, and Vaughn Booker comes in for Kansas City.
00:19:44Second down, 16, Emmitt with a yard loss on the last play.
00:19:48That'll be good enough for a first down at the 36-yard line.
00:19:58James Hastie, the defender.
00:20:00Just a good job by Troy Aikman, really anticipating the throw, and no one reading the coverage,
00:20:06seeing Michael Irvin has that one-on-one coverage.
00:20:09Watch Troy Aikman as he hits that last step, sits and throws, and throws it right into
00:20:13a little hole.
00:20:14Michael Irvin driving, James Hastie not close enough to break it up.
00:20:19Michael Irvin coming off of Hastie, he just pushes him aside, goes back to the inside,
00:20:23and he is wide open.
00:20:24No safety help.
00:20:27More catches for Irvin today.
00:20:29That leaves him only three from 500 per inch.
00:20:32Emmitt with a flag down, vaults across the 40-yard line.
00:20:37Anthony Davis seeing more and more playing time.
00:20:41Marty Schottenheimer very excited about Davis out of Utah, and made the tackle.
00:20:45I'll tell you what, Davis gets up and helps out on the tackle, but Moose Johnson, I mean,
00:20:51he put him on the ground and Davis got back up.
00:20:59Oops, Ray Donaldson, the 16-year veteran center for the Cowboys, limps off.
00:21:06I'll tell you how many years that he's been in the league, and 80 as a rookie with the
00:21:10Colts, his quarterbacks were Burt Jones and Greg Landry.
00:21:14And only played in one playoff game in his whole career, so he's excited about being
00:21:18down here and playing with this football team and this offense, knowing he has a chance
00:21:22to go to the playoffs and have success.
00:21:24227 games for Donaldson.
00:21:26Another pretty good center came out of that 80 draft named Dwight Stevenson.
00:21:31Oh, he's marching away.
00:21:32Aikman, underneath.
00:21:34Oh, the check, incomplete.
00:21:37Coverage by Mark Collins.
00:21:40Look at the ankle of Donaldson.
00:21:41You know, Dick, one of the things when you see Donaldson going off, and here comes a
00:21:45blitz up the middle at Troy Aikman, they try to get to him with a blitz and they just don't
00:21:50do that.
00:21:51Look at here.
00:21:52Davis comes up inside, they knock him off, Nate Newton knocks him off, Sally Moore can't
00:21:55get there, and the ball gets out in a hurry.
00:21:57But they listed 22 guys on the injured list back to the National Football League.
00:22:01Not major injuries, but things that can pop up, and then they lose their center on top
00:22:05of it.
00:22:06Derrick Kennard, who weighs only 333 pounds, replaces the 300-pound Donaldson.
00:22:12Whoops!
00:22:13Sally Moore tried to get the snap count, and he was well in advance of the snap.
00:22:21Well, we talked about Nate Newton, a 10-year veteran from Florida A&M, wasn't drafted out
00:22:27of college, a three-time pro bowler.
00:22:29He's the spirit of that offensive line.
00:22:32And we were talking to him about Thanksgiving, and he had a surprising, his main entree is
00:22:37not turkey.
00:22:38He didn't want turkey today.
00:22:39You ready?
00:22:40Yeah.
00:22:41We should give this to you as a quiz, but we're going to save the suspense.
00:22:44How about goat?
00:22:45He loves goat.
00:22:46I mean, there's nothing wrong with a good goat now.
00:22:47He had goat, his mom had it.
00:22:49Everybody at the table ate it, so I'm not eating goat.
00:22:51And then there was just a little bit left in the bowl.
00:22:54Nate said, well, maybe I'll try it.
00:22:56Then he ate everything that was in the bowl and had his mother cut some more off the goat.
00:23:00Well, I've got a feeling Nate Newton's not seen a lot of foods that he didn't like.
00:23:03He said the only problem was the next morning he had this urge to go out and graze on the front lawn.
00:23:08What did he say?
00:23:09Woke up with the sheep's in his mouth?
00:23:16On first down.
00:23:17Emmitt tripped up in the back.
00:23:18He might have fallen over his own man, too.
00:23:25You're absolutely right.
00:23:26He tripped over his own man coming out of the backfield.
00:23:29And that was two and eight.
00:23:30He caught his leg.
00:23:32I guess that's the best way to tackle their own people is to knock down Emmitt.
00:23:37One thing we saw are the Kansas City coaches told us before the game,
00:23:41they thought their front seven could maybe stop this Dallas running game.
00:23:44So far, they have not done that.
00:23:46If they bring the safety up, look for Troy Eggman to go deep.
00:23:50It's the second and nine.
00:23:53The Blitz.
00:23:54Eggman reads it.
00:23:55Goes to Irvin.
00:23:56First down at the Kansas City 42.
00:23:59Excellent job by the Dallas offense just picking up the Blitz,
00:24:04giving Troy Eggman an extra time.
00:24:06One-on-one coverage outside.
00:24:08Look right here.
00:24:09Watch the Dallas offensive line.
00:24:10You see the linebackers coming.
00:24:12Look at all the linemen staying in their lanes.
00:24:14Emmitt Smith doing a good job picking up the Blitz and linebacker.
00:24:17And now here, James Hasty, one-on-one with Michael, trying to be physical with him.
00:24:21But look at the timing.
00:24:22As soon as he turns out, Troy Eggman has the ball right here.
00:24:25You can't stop that kind of execution.
00:24:27What a one-two punch.
00:24:28Smith has 40 yards rushing.
00:24:29That's already 57 yards receiving for Michael Irvin on five catches.
00:24:33And Eggman right on the money.
00:24:36Back he goes to the air.
00:24:38Bumps it to Emmitt.
00:24:41He throws George Jamison.
00:24:43And Mark Collins came up from safety to knock him out of bounds.
00:24:48And Emmitt held his shoulder for a moment, but he's okay apparently.
00:24:53This is unfair to have Emmitt Smith come out into the flat on George Jamison, the linebacker,
00:24:58and expect the linebacker to make this play.
00:25:00Watch Emmitt Smith.
00:25:01Here's the move.
00:25:02Went inside, back outside.
00:25:03See it, George?
00:25:05Collins comes in and makes a play.
00:25:06Emmitt does land on his elbow more than his shoulder.
00:25:10And it looked like, thank God, he had a pad on there.
00:25:13And Vaughn Booker put a hit on Eggman as he delivered.
00:25:17Eggman is seven for nine.
00:25:22Emmitt Smith.
00:25:24And he battles his way, looks to be good enough for a first down at the 31-yard line
00:25:30before Dale Carter can make the stop.
00:25:34Well, the Kansas City Chiefs right there may be expecting run,
00:25:37but what they're doing now, they're starting to walk up that extra guy in there
00:25:40trying to stop the Cowboys from having success.
00:25:43Ray Donaldson will go back for x-rays on that right ankle.
00:25:48Barry Switzer, a 58-year-old head man here in Dallas.
00:25:52He's used to working on Thanksgiving Day, of course, at Oklahoma.
00:25:55Many Thanksgivings involved with the Oklahoma-Nebraska battles.
00:26:05Before the snap, Kendall Watkins, number 83,
00:26:10injured early in his movement.
00:26:13Well, Dick, Phil found out earlier that, you know, the corners for the snap all start.
00:26:18Number 84 of the offense, five yards, it's still first down.
00:26:22Hasey and Carter went to Marty.
00:26:24They wanted to double up on these guys on the outside.
00:26:26They wanted to say, you know, that's a personal affront to us.
00:26:28I mean, that's an embarrassment.
00:26:29And they said, wait a minute, Phil, what?
00:26:31I want to cover man-to-man?
00:26:32Yeah, Dale Carter and James Hasey said we can cover these receivers
00:26:35and Michael Irvin one-on-one, we can be physical.
00:26:38You don't have to double them.
00:26:39You know, you're taking away our courage and whatever.
00:26:42So they come out here, they're not having success, Paul,
00:26:45covering Michael Irvin one-on-one.
00:26:47I would now ask for some help.
00:26:48Help.
00:26:50First and 15.
00:26:53Nearing the end of the opening quarter.
00:26:54Another check with a catch.
00:26:56George Jamison, the linebacker on him at the 30-yard line.
00:26:59That will bring up second and almost 10.
00:27:03With all of this stuff all said and done,
00:27:05and we've got a minute and 37 left to go in this first quarter,
00:27:08the most important thing that is not happening.
00:27:11You're not getting in Detroit Aikman's face.
00:27:13And if this guy is one of the best quarterbacks in the national football league
00:27:17and you let him sit back there and throw to whomever he would like to,
00:27:21you don't have a chance of winning this football game.
00:27:25Two impressive drives.
00:27:26The first led to a 70-yard drive to touchdown.
00:27:31Smith 15 with a payoff.
00:27:32And that's meant to change his direction, but right into some red shirts.
00:27:35Darren Mickle, 92.
00:27:38Had invaded the backfield of the Cowboys.
00:27:41And Keith Traylor.
00:27:42Keith Traylor, 94, was the guy that really makes the play first.
00:27:45And these two guys, Mickle and Traylor.
00:27:47And that was the thing about the 46, Dick.
00:27:49It enables this team to bring in some fresh people.
00:27:53Third and long for Aikman, Phil.
00:27:56Well, that's some of this Kansas City defense.
00:27:58Wanted to get Aikman and the Cowboys in.
00:28:00Third and 10-plus.
00:28:01Hard to do when you've got a running back like Emmitt Smith.
00:28:04But I expect him to play it safe, make him catch it underneath.
00:28:11A bump and gone.
00:28:15Irving, touchdown.
00:28:17What a catch.
00:28:26Irving loves Irving.
00:28:36The coverage appeared to be as good as you can ask of an NFL corner.
00:28:42Well, the guy I thought that was going to get there was Collins.
00:28:45I thought Clark Collins, number 25, had an opportunity to get into that corner
00:28:49and break up the play because it was obvious he read it.
00:28:53The fact that Troy Aikman made that fake pump, it made Mark Collins stop.
00:28:57That's why there was single coverage outside.
00:29:00Ponyo with the extra point, 14-0.
00:29:03Michael Irving, six catches, 90 yards in this opening quarter.
00:29:08Michael Irving using that left hand to keep the defender away.
00:29:12Gets his right hand on it.
00:29:13What a catch.
00:29:16You're watching the NFL on NBC.
00:29:24Michael Irving offered his touchdown ball to his sister Lisa after the play.
00:29:31I'll show you that after Ponyo kicks it off to Tamarik Vanover.
00:29:3414-0 Cowboys, two very impressive 11-play drives.
00:29:39Vanover right at the middle.
00:29:45A man who can run that fast and weigh 210 pounds out to the 34-yard line.
00:29:50Here is an extraordinary catch.
00:29:52Look at Dale Carter trying to be aggressive at the line of scrimmage,
00:29:56but he's expecting help deep.
00:29:57The pump fake by Troy Aikman lets him be single coverage.
00:30:01What a catch by Michael Irving.
00:30:04The NFL Charities grant of $100,000 awarded to the Cities and Schools
00:30:08Organization, which provides alternative school initiatives and after-school
00:30:12programs at the NFL Youth Education Town in South Central Los Angeles.
00:30:17You know, the NFL Charities now over the years have made grant commitments
00:30:21of more than $17 million.
00:30:26Kansas City, $300,000.
00:30:30Well, Kansas City, three and out, gained only five yards,
00:30:33their first possession.
00:30:34Fallen behind 14-0, just seconds left in the first period.
00:30:40Throw intended for Anders by Bono, but he overshoots the mark.
00:30:44Got three miles covered for Dallas.
00:30:47Yeah, he overshoots it because Tony Tolbert is going to kill him if he doesn't.
00:30:50You know, it's supposed to be Thanksgiving.
00:30:52Now, you're supposed to do a little giving, have a little thanks.
00:30:55You've got to give Marty a break.
00:30:57Give him a little office.
00:30:58Let him do something.
00:31:01Yeah, there's incredible pride, NFC, AFC, in the fact that the NFC has
00:31:07dominated 11 straight Super Bowls and they feel that they have two premier
00:31:12teams in the Niners and Dallas and they're trying to prove their point
00:31:16early to Kansas City.
00:31:18Anders, behind some blocking, but he takes the inside route and Chad
00:31:22Hennings is there to write him down after a short game.
00:31:27And so the first quarter, very impressive for Dallas, ticks away.
00:31:32The Cowboys, 14.
00:31:35Marty Schottenheimer's Chiefs, 0.
00:31:38Quarter, 14-0 Dallas.
00:31:40He's caught 499 and not many any better than that one.
00:31:45Michael Irvin, the all-time record holder.
00:31:51And that's his sister, Lisa, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
00:31:56I'll tell you, it's rare that you get nine catches in the first quarter
00:31:59in a kiss, you know?
00:32:01He's working on a 36-catch game.
00:32:06Vono under a blitz gets it off.
00:32:10And Leroy Thompson able to move to the 45 and down at the 45.
00:32:17Played that there and the first down and Vono took quite a hit.
00:32:22Darren Smith was in on him.
00:32:24Well, Kansas City gets this right right here.
00:32:26They got a screen play against the blitz.
00:32:28Nobody's blocking.
00:32:29Darren Woodson coming in from Vono's left.
00:32:31He just has time to get it off, but look at the speed of the Cowboy
00:32:34defensive lineman getting down the field and making the play.
00:32:38Tony Talbert is a lineman that gets down field and makes the play,
00:32:41but that Thompson was down on the ground.
00:32:43That's a good call.
00:32:46On the 45-yard line, Marcus Allen, his first carry.
00:32:52And he drives into Dallas territory, a pickup of six,
00:32:56before Dixon Edwards can make the stop.
00:32:59Surprisingly, when we talked with Marcus in his 14 years in the league,
00:33:04never played on Thanksgiving.
00:33:06I don't recall ever having a chance to play on Turkey Day.
00:33:12577 yards to lead Kansas City.
00:33:16And, of course, moving up the ladder of all-time touchdowns.
00:33:24124 total touchdowns for Marcus.
00:33:27Caught in the backfield and a loss of a yard as Maryland and Hennings,
00:33:32the two tackles, able to knife through.
00:33:35Let's take a look at Allen on the elite list of touchdown makers in NFL history.
00:33:42Jerry Rice continues to forge ahead.
00:33:45Great Jim Brown and Walter Payton, and now Marcus Allen,
00:33:48just a couple away from moving into the second spot.
00:33:52You understand Ray Donaldson fractured ankle,
00:33:55and Donaldson obviously will not return.
00:33:59Third down and five.
00:34:01Bono, long for Lake Dawson, and covered by Deion Sanders.
00:34:07And the Chiefs have to putt again.
00:34:10Well, the Kansas City Chiefs told us that they were not going to shy away
00:34:14from throwing a ball against Deion Sanders.
00:34:16Lake Dawson, single coverage, tries to give him a move, but does not fool him.
00:34:20And there you can see Deion Sanders.
00:34:22No matter if you do fool him, he still has the speed to make it up his third.
00:34:26If you do fool him, he still has the speed to make it up and stay with you.
00:34:29I'll tell you one other thing.
00:34:30You better not throw that baby inside on him,
00:34:32because if you throw it inside on the playing field, he's got it.
00:34:35And that he is Deion.
00:34:39Aguiar to putt to Kevin Williams.
00:34:47High spinner that Williams calls for the fair catch at the Dallas 15-yard line.
00:34:52Timeout, 12.52 remaining in the opening half.
00:34:59More than Paul Aguiar.
00:35:01That's just almost 50 yards of length from nose to tail.
00:35:04Midnight Blimp crew wishes everyone a very happy Thanksgiving.
00:35:08You especially, Paul. Thank you so much.
00:35:11I was trying to say you put a gas.
00:35:13Not at all, not at all, not at all.
00:35:15Back goes Aikman.
00:35:17And it's Irving's 500th career catch.
00:35:21He's out to the 21-yard line.
00:35:23He, earlier this season, passed Drew Pearson, who had 489.
00:35:28In fact, that was last week.
00:35:29And he moved ahead of Tony Hill's all-time yardage.
00:35:32He's out about 800, 200 yards receiving and just 29 years old.
00:35:37He's been here forever.
00:35:39The way these guys are breaking records and putting balls away.
00:35:42They're not going to have enough balls to finish the season.
00:35:44You only start, you only buy so many, don't you, at the beginning?
00:35:48Irving unhappy that his streak of 100-yard games was broken.
00:35:52In San Francisco, Irving was trying to get his 100 in the first half.
00:35:56And it runs into a wall.
00:35:58Joe Phillips could well be described as that.
00:36:01At about .310 going on .330.
00:36:07That was a good illustration right there of this new Kansas City defense.
00:36:10How they like to penetrate.
00:36:12They hit the cracks of the offensive line.
00:36:15Right there you see Tracy Simeon, 54, the middle linebacker,
00:36:17doing a good job of holding up Moose Johnston in the hole
00:36:21and keeping Emmitt Smith in the backfield
00:36:23so the defensive lineman can make the tackle.
00:36:25Simeon, again, the leading tackler for the Chiefs,
00:36:28as he has been the last three seasons.
00:36:30Sherman Williams comes in for the Cowboys, replacing Emmitt Smith,
00:36:35the number two pick out of Alabama.
00:36:40Well, there's no whistle, and it's intercepted by James Hastie.
00:36:43James Hastie, flags are down,
00:36:45and he's the number one New York kid out of bounds
00:36:48at the Dallas 23-yard line.
00:36:51Well, I'll tell you, if they didn't blow a whistle, they should have,
00:36:54because they almost got Troy Aikman killed.
00:36:59Jerry Austin, our referee.
00:37:01Yeah, we knew that, but you know...
00:37:03Offside, number 50 of the defense, five yards, first down.
00:37:08Excuse me, when you run unimpeded to the quarterback, you blow a whistle.
00:37:12You've got seven of them out there, one of them's got to work.
00:37:14Take a look at this, and these guys are coming,
00:37:17and when they get through, look at it, he's already through,
00:37:19now you're on your way to the quarterback, you've got to blow a whistle.
00:37:21Yeah, but the good thing is, Davis pulled up a little on Troy Aikman,
00:37:24but you're right, they do not hear the whistle,
00:37:26they should keep going to the quarterback.
00:37:28That's a free play for the quarterback,
00:37:30that's a free play for the Cowboys there,
00:37:32and the Chiefs have basically pulled up except for Hastie.
00:37:37First down and 10th at 25.
00:37:41And back to Novacek.
00:37:43Able to handle the good hit from Mark Collins,
00:37:45and hold on, a gain of nearly 9.
00:37:49You know what I like about this play,
00:37:51what they did was they boosted Johnston,
00:37:53they put him number 48 as a tight end, on the line of scrimmage,
00:37:56and then, they bring Novacek, there he is,
00:37:58and then they bring Novacek in motion.
00:38:01New little wrinkle.
00:38:04Well, yeah, it is a good wrinkle,
00:38:05and you see the Cowboys do that a lot,
00:38:07because they do not want a defender to get in J. Novacek's way,
00:38:10at the line of scrimmage, and hold him up,
00:38:12so they move him around, switch these players and positions,
00:38:14so you can get success like that.
00:38:17Very productive player.
00:38:22Johnston to the 40, and has the first down.
00:38:26Darryl Johnston.
00:38:29Such a sensational blocker,
00:38:31and so anytime he carries,
00:38:33he is that chorus of moose.
00:38:36As moose would say right there,
00:38:38they are throwing me my one or two bones for the game right there.
00:38:41I get to run a few times and catch a couple of passes,
00:38:44but mainly he is out there to be the lead blocker for Emmitt Smith.
00:38:47Would not you love to be able to run behind this offensive line?
00:38:50They are as big as this whole building right here.
00:38:52They take up enough room.
00:38:54Johnston has made the pro bowl because of this blocker.
00:38:57He has never missed a game since his four years at Syracuse.
00:39:03Nice play by the defense.
00:39:05But this is a huge offensive line, Dick.
00:39:07Simeon and Jamison make the tackle for no gain.
00:39:10Look at the size of the line.
00:39:12That is an underestimate, too, at 320.
00:39:14What do you think, Phil?
00:39:16I really honestly would guess about 335 would be the average,
00:39:19because we were at practice a couple of days,
00:39:22and Dick, how many times did you say,
00:39:25Look at the size of this guy right here.
00:39:27Eric Williams alone and Nate Newton and Larry Allen.
00:39:30These are big men.
00:39:32And then you put in Kennard for Donaldson.
00:39:34Yes, so the average goes up.
00:39:35Kennard, they say 330, but that is when he is in really good shape.
00:39:38That is the cow and cowboys.
00:39:44Eggman dumps it off Emmitt.
00:39:47Simeon misses.
00:39:50So does Hastie.
00:39:52And Emmitt is close to a first down at the 49.
00:39:54I am telling you, it is not fair.
00:39:56This play should be outlawed.
00:39:58Where you put Emmitt Smith on a linebacker,
00:40:01it is just a dump pass.
00:40:03Troy Eggman is trying to get the ball downfield.
00:40:05No place to go.
00:40:06Good defensive secondary coverage.
00:40:08And look at Emmitt.
00:40:09Here comes Simeon.
00:40:10Goodbye, Simeon.
00:40:11And here comes Hastie.
00:40:12Goodbye, Hastie.
00:40:13Almost got the first down.
00:40:15It will be third in about a half yard.
00:40:17A wonderful job of covering everybody down the field.
00:40:20Troy Eggman, excellent.
00:40:21Lays it off to his outlet receiver.
00:40:23And Emmitt makes those tacklers miss.
00:40:26They are already yelling moose.
00:40:28They want Johnson.
00:40:29He gets it.
00:40:30And he is toppled as he crosses the 50.
00:40:32That will be a first down.
00:40:34Boy, he has had a busy half.
00:40:35He has carried three times.
00:40:37You know, the one thing about Nate Newtonville,
00:40:39talking to him the other day,
00:40:40and he is such a joy to be around,
00:40:42but old Nate looked at you, Phil, and he said,
00:40:44you know, and he points to his stomach,
00:40:46if I can only get rid of that.
00:40:48You see that thing there on 61?
00:40:50He said, so Phil said, how about liposuction?
00:40:53You know what you would have to bring in here?
00:40:55One of those things that take the stuff out of a sewer.
00:40:57This guy is so huge.
00:40:59Look at him.
00:41:00I love him, man.
00:41:01He is one of the funniest men I have ever talked to.
00:41:03There is a lot of heart in there, too.
00:41:05Oh, you bet.
00:41:07First down from the 49ers.
00:41:10Davis with a sack of Eggman.
00:41:12Anthony Davis.
00:41:13His first of the year.
00:41:15Described or disguised very well, Phil.
00:41:19That is the whole key to it.
00:41:21Watch the defensive line go down inside,
00:41:23and you will see Anthony Davis come around to the outside.
00:41:26His speed is what makes that play right there work.
00:41:29Larry Williams is not able,
00:41:31not Eric Williams, I should say,
00:41:32is not able to get outside and pick him up because of that speed.
00:41:35That is only the eighth time all year.
00:41:37Eight times that Eggman has been sacked.
00:41:39I see that now, eight.
00:41:41The total sacks are twelve
00:41:43because Wade Wilson has been sacked four times.
00:41:47There is protecting Eric Kramer well all year.
00:41:49Strain it.
00:41:50Oh, that's right.
00:41:51Did not call Neil Smith.
00:41:53Who nails Emmitt Smith at the 37th.
00:41:57And Anthony Davis again in on the screen.
00:42:00Boy, was that thing played beautifully by Neil Smith.
00:42:03He played it at the line of scrimmage.
00:42:05You know, I would imagine that he has
00:42:08the coverage right here.
00:42:09Here's Neil Smith here.
00:42:10When you watch what he does,
00:42:12he just sits in the line of scrimmage.
00:42:13Now look, I got to believe that he has screen responsibility.
00:42:16He steps up, Eggman gets the ball off,
00:42:18and boom, they make the play.
00:42:20That's nice.
00:42:22Neil Smith from New Orleans, Louisiana.
00:42:29Third and 23.
00:42:38Eggman throws as he's hit,
00:42:40and there's no one downfield.
00:42:41Kevin Williams was the closest cowboy,
00:42:44and for the first time, Dallas has to punt.
00:42:51Dallas punts fewer times than anyone,
00:42:55and this may be part of the story today,
00:42:57although James Jett does come in.
00:42:59All right, here's Neil Smith again on that screen.
00:43:01Now watch, that's his responsibility.
00:43:03He sees Novacek standing there,
00:43:05he reads screen, gets up in there along with Davis,
00:43:07and they make the play.
00:43:08That's just good hustle by the defense.
00:43:10Something they needed down 14-0.
00:43:12Jett had back spasms in practice,
00:43:14and they were worried he wouldn't be able to punt.
00:43:16Let's see how he does here.
00:43:18Slaps it off the side of his foot,
00:43:20but it takes a good Dallas bounce to Vanover.
00:43:24Vanover turns the corner and is hit hard
00:43:28on a bounce at the 35-yard line.
00:43:3040 on the punt, 12 on the return
00:43:33for a very exciting young player,
00:43:35Tomeric Vanover from Florida State.
00:43:38Key mark!
00:43:40Giving it his all,
00:43:43and Davis takes him out of bounds.
00:43:46...four.
00:43:48Vanover inside the eight.
00:43:50And it's Kimball Anders,
00:43:52stopped by Godfrey Miles.
00:43:54Miles playing for Robert Jones at middle linebacker,
00:43:57Jones with a groin injury and an inner ear infection,
00:44:00some real bad dizzy spells.
00:44:02There's Miles, Florida graduate.
00:44:05Look at the total yards.
00:44:0820 is all for Kansas City.
00:44:10One first down.
00:44:11There's Robert Jones.
00:44:21Bono, ball play action,
00:44:24guns complete at the 48-yard line
00:44:27as Tomeric Vanover
00:44:29makes a nice stab,
00:44:31a 14-yard gain in front of Larry Brown.
00:44:34Well, it's a good job by here of Steve Bono
00:44:36finding the open man.
00:44:37It's a blitz again by the Cowboys,
00:44:39and what they're doing,
00:44:40they're coming up and pressing these receivers
00:44:42because they don't think they can run away
00:44:44from the defenders.
00:44:45And right there, good job by Vanover
00:44:47getting in front of Larry Brown
00:44:48and making the catch.
00:44:50Tomeric Vanover with his sixth catch.
00:44:53He's going to be a force for these teams.
00:44:55He already is in special teams.
00:44:59Charles Haley.
00:45:02Off the mark as flags fly.
00:45:06And Greg Hill with about five,
00:45:09but it would appear that it was Haley
00:45:11guilty of the offsides.
00:45:14It is.
00:45:15It is, and one of the things that happens
00:45:16when you're offside,
00:45:17and Charles should know a little bit better than this,
00:45:19when you go offside,
00:45:20keep on going, don't stop,
00:45:22because he could have gotten back to the ball carrier,
00:45:24blown the whistle,
00:45:25and they wouldn't have been able to pick up
00:45:26the yardage that they did.
00:45:28Now, they're going to take the penalty anyway,
00:45:29but they could have broken the play for a long game.
00:45:32So, Charles Haley, when you go across,
00:45:34keep on going.
00:45:35Right, make them stop the play.
00:45:36That's a good job for the Kansas City offense.
00:45:38Even though you know they're offsides,
00:45:40go ahead and run the play like you said, Paul,
00:45:41and try to make a big play.
00:45:49More to the backfield as Andrews goes in motion.
00:45:51Over the middle, complete with a tight end.
00:45:54First down at the 36-yard line,
00:45:56Darren Woodson, who leads the Cowboys in tackles,
00:45:59has another.
00:46:00This is the one thing I think Kansas City
00:46:01really wanted to do, Phil,
00:46:03is to throw some underneath stuff,
00:46:04some 5-yard junk.
00:46:06And that's what they did right there.
00:46:07It was really like a page out of the 49ers' offense,
00:46:10something that Kansas City likes to do,
00:46:12run that short pass again,
00:46:13nobody in the backfield,
00:46:15spread the defense out,
00:46:16and throw underneath it.
00:46:18Lake Dawson to the right,
00:46:20Vanover left.
00:46:24Greg Hill, who's a Dallas high school buddy,
00:46:28and has a sizable gain to the 31.
00:46:30He thought he had more.
00:46:32Chad Hennings perhaps tripped him up.
00:46:35If Hennings doesn't grab him by the leg here,
00:46:37Hennings, he's up, he's short coming up.
00:46:39But watch this, 95, Chad Hennings,
00:46:41he reaches out right here and grabs that leg
00:46:43and gets back onto his heel.
00:46:45Otherwise, heel might have been gone.
00:46:47Here's another injury.
00:46:49Hennings at a position that's already thin
00:46:52with Leon Letts suspended.
00:46:55And Tony Tolbert has been limping.
00:47:02And second and three,
00:47:04Bono trying to hit Greg Hill, incomplete.
00:47:07Tony Tolbert messed up the play
00:47:09as he was in Bono's face.
00:47:11Yeah, but there was supposed to be a fake here,
00:47:13the Kimball Anders.
00:47:15And what happened that time,
00:47:16Anders ran so far inside
00:47:18that Bono couldn't make the fake,
00:47:19so he didn't fool anybody on the play.
00:47:21This thing has to be a play-action pass.
00:47:24Watch Bono, watch when he stretches here
00:47:26at Kimball Anders.
00:47:27He's not even close to the ball.
00:47:29From that angle, it's very hard to see.
00:47:30But now, with defenders in his face,
00:47:33now it's hard to throw the ball
00:47:34over to a shorter man, Hill.
00:47:39Third and three.
00:47:43Hill.
00:47:46Battling to the 26-yard line,
00:47:48first down, it would appear.
00:47:50Darren Smith and Brock Marion
00:47:52riding him down.
00:47:53This young Hill is,
00:47:55really, it's a big day for him.
00:47:57He was born and raised in Dallas.
00:47:58Well, one thing Greg Hill brings to this lineup
00:48:01is a little more speed.
00:48:02And right now,
00:48:03that's what this Kansas City offense needs,
00:48:05is some speed, because Dallas
00:48:06is up there challenging him.
00:48:08And the other thing,
00:48:09Tameric Vanover coming in
00:48:10at the wide receiver spot,
00:48:11if you keep playing him, man coverage,
00:48:13they're going to go deep to him.
00:48:14How about a little more strength, too?
00:48:16He took a couple of people
00:48:18to get that first down.
00:48:19Fourth down.
00:48:26Bono, following the pattern,
00:48:28sidesteps the run,
00:48:29and there's Godfrey Miles
00:48:31batted away from Derek Walker.
00:48:36Boy, Bono's got, he, I mean,
00:48:38it's a lot easier for us to talk about,
00:48:39but Bono's got to look at his backs
00:48:41coming out of the backfield,
00:48:42because that time there,
00:48:43if he throws the ball out to the outside,
00:48:46he may have a play.
00:48:48Wait, there's a good illustration.
00:48:50Oh!
00:48:51Dion, and he gets away with that, and he's pointing to the official at the same time, and there's no flag!
00:48:56Well, the Kansas City Chiefs wanted to be physical on Dion Sanders today.
00:49:00They said anytime the ball's not thrown towards his way, they were going to hit him, try to cut him, let him go.
00:49:06He's got to stay involved in this game.
00:49:08Dawson out there on him again.
00:49:10There's Bono throwing.
00:49:11Oh, no, he intercepted.
00:49:12Fly down.
00:49:13Larry Brown going through the receiver.
00:49:15Webster's slaughtered.
00:49:17Now, you can complain all you want, Mr. Brown, but I'm going to tell you right now,
00:49:21you can't go through and hit the ball, the receiver, before the ball gets there.
00:49:25And I don't care if, you know, an official will say, well...
00:49:31There it is.
00:49:32This is an easy call.
00:49:33Not only a good call, but an easy call to make.
00:49:36Well, what makes it so easy?
00:49:37Watch Webster's slaughter right here.
00:49:39He takes off, and he gets Larry Brown behind him, and now he has him between him and the ball and Larry Brown.
00:49:45The only way he can make the play is to go through the receiver.
00:49:48They got him with a body.
00:49:49A lot of fans didn't see that.
00:49:50The hands were free, but he bumped him with a body.
00:49:53Eight-yard penalty.
00:49:54First down inside the 20.
00:49:56Kansas City's best chance to score with two and a half left in this first half.
00:50:00Bono underneath and complete.
00:50:03Kimball Anders, Dixon Edwards was there.
00:50:07You know, sometimes you just wonder about Bono's reads.
00:50:11On this play here, Kimball Anders, I mean, it's obvious he's got a red shirt on,
00:50:15and there's a couple of white shirts right there.
00:50:17You know what I'm saying?
00:50:18Well, I'll tell you one thing.
00:50:19They said they were going to attack Deion Sanders today,
00:50:21but the last couple of plays, he's been out there singled up with the receiver,
00:50:25and he has a chance to throw it, but Steve Bono is coming off and going to the underneath receiver.
00:50:30Lake Dawson, wide right, and Deion has him.
00:50:33Top of your picture.
00:50:35Draw.
00:50:38And Leroy Thompson gets only a couple.
00:50:42Charles Haley and Russell Maryland read it.
00:50:49Charles Haley does an excellent job of seeing and diagnosing plays right there,
00:50:53gets around the left tackle, all comes straight down the line of scrimmage,
00:50:57and an excellent play on a draw play.
00:50:59I don't think John Ault saw him.
00:51:03So, as the two-minute warning hits, it's 14-0 Dallas,
00:51:08and it'll be a big third-down call for Kansas City.
00:51:13Their longest drive, having third and nine, and the Cowboys 17.
00:51:19They've consumed almost four and a half minutes in this possession.
00:51:23But they need points.
00:51:32And the scramble chased by Colbert, incomplete for Lake Dawson.
00:51:38In front of Scott Case and Deion Sanders, and Dawson unable to pull it in.
00:51:45Well, Bono first was going to try to throw the ball to Kimball Anders,
00:51:48and then you look out to the outside.
00:51:50This is just excellent coverage.
00:51:52Well, again, right there, if he would have had time,
00:51:55he might have had a chance to hit Lake Dawson for the first down,
00:51:58but again, the Cowboys overload the defense and keep Deion out there on an island,
00:52:03one-on-one.
00:52:04Lynn Elliott has missed only three of 20 all year.
00:52:07This is a 34-yard attempt.
00:52:13Whoa.
00:52:14And it's good.
00:52:16So, Elliott puts three on Kansas City's side of the board.
00:52:20You're watching the NFL on N.
00:52:23Welcome back to Big D from president of NBC Sports, Dick Ebersole,
00:52:27and our executive producer, Tommy Roy.
00:52:29We extend our happiest and healthiest Thanksgiving wishes.
00:52:35Give your folks a big hug today.
00:52:39This is the one.
00:52:41Lynn Elliott gives Kansas City its first points, 14-3,
00:52:46and Dallas with all its timeouts, with 150 to try to add to their lead, 14-3.
00:52:51Kevin Williams.
00:52:54Big hole.
00:52:55One to beat Elliott, and he gets enough of him to bring him down across the 50-yard line
00:53:00and a flag down.
00:53:01Elliott might have tripped him.
00:53:10Yep, that's what happened.
00:53:11Elliott saved the touchdown.
00:53:13It'll cost them some more yards.
00:53:15Tripping number two.
00:53:18He's got it going the wrong way.
00:53:21Ten yards from the end of the run.
00:53:23They were pointing the wrong way.
00:53:25They were pointing at Dallas.
00:53:28Well, it is against Dallas.
00:53:30Well, it's a good job.
00:53:32Right there, it should be the other way.
00:53:35They're going back.
00:53:36They've got to go back.
00:53:37They screwed it up twice.
00:53:39First on the call, then they took the ball down.
00:53:41Look at Barry Spencer saying, you know, what do I have to do?
00:53:45Special teams coach said, you know, I'll help you out, boys.
00:53:48Let me show you the direction.
00:53:49This thing goes north and south.
00:53:50We're going north at this time.
00:53:52They still don't have it right.
00:53:53Now they're finally marching it from the 50.
00:53:56Foul was kicking by number two of the kicking team.
00:53:59Ten yards from the end of the run.
00:54:01It's down.
00:54:02It's a 43-yard return by Kevin Williams.
00:54:05Elliott will take the 10-yard penalty.
00:54:07It saved the touchdown.
00:54:09It really did.
00:54:10You know, Elliott just did anything he could possibly do to help get the runner down.
00:54:14And by sticking his leg out, he did save it.
00:54:17You know, they're not in field goal range yet.
00:54:19But they have three timeouts.
00:54:20Dallas with 142.
00:54:22Remember, once it was against Green Bay.
00:54:24Don Meredith on the sidelines tried that old tripping penalty to save a touchdown.
00:54:28One of the great cowboys of yesteryear.
00:54:31Hope he's watching today.
00:54:33First down.
00:54:36Eggman dumps it underneath to Johnston.
00:54:38And Moose gets a couple to the 38.
00:54:42Simeon and Davis collaborate on the tackle.
00:54:45They spot it at the 47.
00:54:48Cowboys have all three timeouts.
00:54:51And lead 14-3.
00:54:52It's really a critical spot for Kansas City.
00:54:55They don't want to go into the locker room down 21-3.
00:54:58They do get the ball to start the second half.
00:55:04Eggman is 14-17 in this first half.
00:55:10As he throws.
00:55:11And incomplete to Johnston.
00:55:13Neal Smith buries Eggman.
00:55:16Excellent job of coverage on the outside by James Hastie.
00:55:19Made Troy Eggman hold on to the ball just a little bit longer.
00:55:23Watch right here.
00:55:24He has to hold on to the ball because James Hastie has Michael Urban smothered.
00:55:28And coming around the corner, Neal Smith gets that extra second.
00:55:31And is able to drive Troy Eggman into the turf.
00:55:34We talked to Troy Eggman yesterday, the day before.
00:55:37I don't know, it's been moving on here so long.
00:55:39He was talking about his back hurts.
00:55:41His groin hurts.
00:55:42His knee hurts.
00:55:43His arm hurts.
00:55:45And that stuff doesn't help.
00:55:47It's really affecting his play today, isn't it?
00:55:49Yeah.
00:55:50Third and seven.
00:55:52And he gets it to Smith.
00:55:54Incomplete.
00:55:55And again, it was Anthony Davis in on Eggman.
00:55:59I'll tell you, this Anthony Davis is putting the show on.
00:56:02You know, sometimes when a guy goes down and you have someone that steps up
00:56:05like Anthony Davis, number 50, does, this guy is coming.
00:56:08And you're not going to hold him out.
00:56:10He's blocked at the line of scrimmage.
00:56:11He gets in Troy Eggman's face.
00:56:12That's just excellent play.
00:56:14Mark Collins right there to knock the ball down.
00:56:16But here's the defense.
00:56:17Here he comes.
00:56:18Watch this.
00:56:19He's blocked by Emmitt in Troy's face.
00:56:22Nice job.
00:56:23James Chet had the bad back and did not kick well.
00:56:26And so, Chris Bonio will punt here.
00:56:29Just going to try to flop one down at the 10 where Van overweights.
00:56:34His first NFL punt.
00:56:37Good one.
00:56:38Terrific.
00:56:41Takes a Kansas City bounce.
00:56:43And the Chiefs will have it around the 17-yard line when we return.
00:56:51NFL on NBC Halftime Report.
00:56:53You'll see the highlights of that high-scoring Minnesota-Detroit game earlier.
00:56:57Andre Rison.
00:56:58Fans are critical of the Browns in Cleveland.
00:57:00And Rison had a rebuttal for the fans.
00:57:03That will be part of the chat with our guys, Gumbel, Ditka, and Gibbs back in the studio.
00:57:09One of the things that Kansas City here, they won't do anything stupid here and put anything at risk, Phil,
00:57:15because they get the ball back in the second half.
00:57:17They do have three timeouts.
00:57:18Derek Thomas has a play since, I think, the first or second series of downs.
00:57:21They have three timeouts of 52 seconds, but they've got about 84 yards to go.
00:57:26Good news is they finally held Dallas 3-and-out.
00:57:30Only 58 seconds possession for the Cowboys.
00:57:33Haley gets to Bono, and Bono just does unload incomplete.
00:57:38Haley looking for another sack.
00:57:41He is second in the league with 10-and-a-half.
00:57:43Well, Charles Haley, one thing Kansas City worried about today.
00:57:48Charles Haley, one-on-one right there.
00:57:50You saw a good spin move to the inside.
00:57:52Gets to the quarterback, makes Bono throw it before he's ready.
00:57:56Nice tackle by Zott.
00:57:58After Haley got through all, Zott tackled him.
00:58:02He's tied with Andy Harmon of Philadelphia with Bryce Popp of Green Bay.
00:58:0614 sacks here at the Thanksgiving break.
00:58:11Goal! Goal!
00:58:17Handball.
00:58:18It's Kimball and Handers out across the 20 to the 24.
00:58:22That'll be short of the first down.
00:58:23Timeout called by Bono.
00:58:26It's 14-3, Dallas.
00:58:32Here comes a little chicken fight.
00:58:34This is good.
00:58:35Now it's my turn.
00:58:36Face mask.
00:58:37I mean, I don't understand why that official...
00:58:39First of all, Dion punched him.
00:58:40Now he's got him by the face mask.
00:58:42Throw the flag!
00:58:46That's illegal. I'm sorry. It's illegal.
00:58:48Throw the flag. I don't care who he is.
00:58:52Third down and two.
00:58:56And they're matched again.
00:58:57Now Willie Davis on Dion this time.
00:59:00Bono on the wall.
00:59:03It's going to be very close as Bill Bates dumps Dean and Hughes.
00:59:13Dion came over to the Kansas City side
00:59:16and offered some suggestions to Marty Schottenheimer.
00:59:20And I can guarantee you, I've known Marty for an awfully long time
00:59:23that he gave some suggestions back to Dion on where he can go.
00:59:28It was enough for the first down, but barely
00:59:30at the 26-yard line.
00:59:32Well, you know, I don't know if I'd be inciting Dion Savers
00:59:35in these kind of wars right here.
00:59:37Because, Paul, we watch films.
00:59:39The one thing you have to admit
00:59:41is he is a big-time playmaker on defense
00:59:43and the ball is thrown his way.
00:59:45So this might make him stay alert
00:59:47and be ready for that ball when it comes toward him.
00:59:49Throw is deep.
00:59:51And it's caught. Yes!
00:59:53At the 44-yard line by Willie Davis.
00:59:55Larry Brown was going for the interception.
00:59:58Bobbled in the air.
01:00:00And Davis steals his first catch today.
01:00:0218 yards. Look at this.
01:00:04We've seen some pretty good catches.
01:00:06Watch as Irvin made a good catch.
01:00:08Look at Davis. But that's just total concentration.
01:00:10Catches the ball and stays inbounds.
01:00:12Outstanding.
01:00:14Well, excellent job back there.
01:00:16But I tell you what, it's a bad job by Steve Bono.
01:00:18Throwing into coverage. He's very lucky that ball was not picked off
01:00:21and gave Dallas more points.
01:00:2329 seconds left in the half.
01:00:2514-3, Dallas.
01:00:27Very loose, deep defense for the Cowboys.
01:00:29As Bono throws underneath.
01:00:32Incomplete. Probably just as well.
01:00:34By the time the tackle would have been made by Darren Woodson,
01:00:37there'd been very little gain for Daynon Hughes.
01:00:39But 23 seconds. Is that still 23?
01:00:41Wasn't that 23 a little while ago?
01:00:43But whatever it is, if you take a look at the defense,
01:00:45where you must throw this ball,
01:00:47if you have that much time with two times...
01:00:49Look at right in here, Phil.
01:00:51There is nobody back there in the middle.
01:00:53Take that 15 or 20 yard. Then you get a chance.
01:00:55But look at the middle. It's open.
01:00:57They just didn't get anybody in there.
01:01:01Bono now 6-4, 15 in this first half.
01:01:04He had a tough game against Houston on Sunday night.
01:01:09Underneath to Marcus.
01:01:11Marcus trying to get out of bounds and save the timeout.
01:01:14That's a 45 from Dallas.
01:01:16And here they go again.
01:01:18Dion and Lake Dawson.
01:01:20Lake Dawson went after Dion and he was the strong safety.
01:01:22Now we've got more people. Davis.
01:01:24Brock Merriam is in there fighting.
01:01:26Brock Merriam is in there with Davis.
01:01:28They got hit. There's a penalty there.
01:01:30This is getting a little out of hand.
01:01:32They've got to calm down, these little skinny people.
01:01:36Charles Haley, pointing one way.
01:01:40Tim Grunard was down field, too,
01:01:42to help out with the block on Dion.
01:01:48Well, we saw the Raiders for a couple of games
01:01:50with the old chop block, right?
01:01:52Going after the legs, which is totally illegal,
01:01:54so they eliminated that.
01:01:55And now you're seeing one thing that we knew
01:01:57the Kansas City was going to do,
01:01:58go after Dion Sanders and hit him after every play.
01:02:00Now, there's nothing wrong with going on a running play,
01:02:02going down field and hitting a safety or a corner.
01:02:04There's nothing wrong.
01:02:05But don't go at his knees.
01:02:06And don't try to take him out that way.
01:02:10Flags both ways, which I hate.
01:02:13After this play was over, we have two fouls.
01:02:17We have number 84 of the red team
01:02:20striking the defensive player.
01:02:22But then number 31 of the defensive team retaliated.
01:02:25The penalties were all set.
01:02:28Still for a foul.
01:02:29Willie Davis and Brock Merriam.
01:02:32Well, you know, my thing is don't throw it at all.
01:02:35Merriam, that's a good left hook.
01:02:36Merriam was first.
01:02:37There's good right, good left.
01:02:39But you know what I don't understand, Nick?
01:02:41Why do you want to hit a guy in a face mask
01:02:43and in a helmet that's like a rock?
01:02:44Why don't you hit him in the gut?
01:02:46Hit him in the throat.
01:02:47Hit him somewhere else.
01:02:49First down at the 45 with 15 seconds left in this first half.
01:02:54Bono, quick slap to Vanover.
01:02:56And Tamaric Vanover's on the way with a 20-yard line.
01:03:00Kansas City spends the timeout at the 8th second mark.
01:03:0425 yards.
01:03:05Bono to Vanover.
01:03:06Excellent job by Steve Bono and Tamaric Vanover
01:03:09getting on the inside.
01:03:10That's where the holes are in this pre-vent defense.
01:03:13And when you talked about him earlier,
01:03:15once this guy gets his hands on the ball,
01:03:17he can make some plays.
01:03:18He's big and has wonderful speed.
01:03:20Boy, it's so much easier going inside into the middle.
01:03:23Now, when you get in the middle,
01:03:24and Dick, you know, when you talked about this guy earlier,
01:03:27when he gets his hands on the football,
01:03:28I don't care about it whether punt return, kickoff return,
01:03:31or with the ball in his hand.
01:03:32And here comes Deion.
01:03:34Puts his head down.
01:03:35That's a nice tackle.
01:03:36Not bad, that's right.
01:03:37He's not getting paid all that money to tackle people, though,
01:03:39so he's out there to cover receivers.
01:03:42He gets $34,999,000 to cover and a buck to tackle.
01:03:47Well, that was it then.
01:03:48That was a buck's worth.
01:03:49Gave him that dollar's worth.
01:03:50Lynn Elliott good on his first try from 34.
01:03:52There are eight seconds left in the half,
01:03:55and Kansas City has a timeout,
01:03:56but Marty doesn't want to gamble on not able to get the timeout
01:04:00before the half expires.
01:04:03Excellent job by Kansas City.
01:04:04I really thought they would be conservative
01:04:06and maybe run the clock out,
01:04:07but they took advantage of the timeouts
01:04:09and the pre-vent defense by the Cowboys
01:04:11and got a chance to kick this field goal.
01:04:1337 yards.
01:04:17And Elliott, the former Cowboy, is two for two.
01:04:21Remember what I said, though,
01:04:22when they took the ball 86 yards away from him.
01:04:25They weren't going to do anything that was going to get him in trouble.
01:04:28They almost did, though.
01:04:29The pass that Bono threw to the outside to Davis
01:04:32should not have been thrown, but they got away with it.
01:04:34But that was the only play that they threw in that drive
01:04:37that was risky at all.
01:04:39That's what you should do in those situations, Paul.
01:04:41And we've seen the momentum of this game really shift.
01:04:45Kansas City's got the kind of pace that they want,
01:04:48a slower-paced game,
01:04:49keeping the Cowboys from making those big plays in offense and defense.
01:04:53And Kansas City, Dick, what, second half?
01:04:55They are a very, very good defensive football team in the second half.
01:04:59And we'll get the ball to start the second half on the kickoff.
01:05:02So they've cut the Dallas lead to eight points.
01:05:05As Troy Aikman and Edmund Smith and company,
01:05:07not much work here in the second quarter.
01:05:10Well, that gives us a chance to remind you,
01:05:13Saturday, NBC's Thanksgiving holiday extravaganza continues
01:05:17with Dennis the Menace.
01:05:20Great falls, great laughs, great family energy.
01:05:23I could have played Dennis when I was a kid.
01:05:25You look like Mr. Wilson, in fact.
01:05:27Don't you?
01:05:28Why don't you guys take a break?
01:05:30This is Thanksgiving, boys.
01:05:33The kick comes down to Williams at the 19.
01:05:40And he is to the 39, and tackled there as the first half comes to an end.
01:05:46So two early, impressive drives by the Cowboys.
01:05:50Emmitt Smith scored on a 15-yard run, then a 33-yard touchdown pass.
01:05:54Aikman to Irvin, and two field goals in the second quarter,
01:05:59the answer for Kansas City.
01:06:01We'll be sending you to our NFL on NBC studio in New York
