00:00:00The National Football League, and a word from your local station.
00:00:06Some highly dramatic finishes, and a team that has been very tough to score against in the second half.
00:00:12One thing about the Chiefs that I like is they find a way to win, Phil.
00:00:15Well, they're gonna have to find a way today, Paul.
00:00:18The one good thing I think they've done, they stopped the momentum the Dallas offense had,
00:00:22they turned it around, let's see if they can keep it going on their offense.
00:00:25And over.
00:00:27And the big catch at the end of the half to set up the second field goal.
00:00:30He's out to about the 32 before he is pushed back.
00:00:33Let's take a look at the Coors Light halftime statistics.
00:00:38And Dallas ran off, you'll recall, the first two drives just dominated the numbers,
00:00:42and then Kansas City has pulled 120 total yards, 50 less than the Cowboys.
00:00:47Well, the one thing that impresses me, the Kansas City defense seemed to catch in rhythm with the Cowboy offense.
00:00:52Not only the players, but the coaches called the right defense to stop some of the plays.
00:00:57It'd be good to see if they can continue that in the second half.
00:01:01Steve Ono starts from the 33, Marcus Allen.
00:01:04And unable to get back to the line of scrimmage as Chad Hennings was in the backfield of the Chiefs.
00:01:11Let's go down to Jim Gray.
00:01:13Thank you, Dick. I talked to Marty Schottenheimer at the half.
00:01:15He says they must be much more efficient on offense, that they've got to control the ball,
00:01:19that if they have too many more three-and-outs, that the defense will be very tired by the fourth quarter.
00:01:24He also said that he feels that now Steve Bono can get on track and have some confidence with that drive at the end of the first half.
00:01:29Dick?
00:01:29All right, Jim, thank you.
00:01:31And Marcus is, uh, three carries for four yards.
00:01:34Greg Hill, two carries for 11 yards.
00:01:36This is the, uh, fifth-best rushing team in the league.
00:01:39They've been shut down on the run.
00:01:41To the sidelines, to Webster Slaughter in complete.
00:01:45Deion Sanders in the coverage.
00:01:48Well, they finally threw it outside to the one-on-one coverage against Deion Sanders.
00:01:53Steve Bono doing a good job, a little safe, maybe throwing it too far outside,
00:01:57but not able to get control of the ball and get both feet down at the same time.
00:02:01And at the end of that play, you see Deion Sanders clapping his hands,
00:02:04because he does not want to give up one completion all day long if he can.
00:02:10Third and a long 10.
00:02:13Sanders, the fullback, set out to the left side.
00:02:17Backfield vacant behind Bono.
00:02:22He throws to the deep sidelines.
00:02:24Complete to Willie Davis, covered by Darren Whitson.
00:02:2917 on the play.
00:02:30You know the thing, and the funny part about it, you hear the people booing,
00:02:33except everyone on the sidelines really knew it was a good catch.
00:02:36Here, here it comes to you.
00:02:37Davis up in the air, two hands up.
00:02:39Now watch, he's got control of his feet.
00:02:41One down.
00:02:43Second one down.
00:02:44Even though he's being pushed out.
00:02:45But a great job.
00:02:46What a job of holding on to the football, because Darren Whitson has already made contact
00:02:50before the ball gets there.
00:02:52Willie Davis showing good hands on that play.
00:02:55Second catch, he had an 18-yarder in the first half.
00:02:5717 on that one.
00:03:00Dawson in motion.
00:03:02In the middle goes Greg Hill.
00:03:05And he was up.
00:03:07And he was up.
00:03:08White shirt away from a touchdown.
00:03:10He was a...
00:03:11Brock Marion saved it.
00:03:12He was a Dixon Edwards also in there.
00:03:14I think he was coming down on the tackle.
00:03:17To the 42-yard line.
00:03:21This young man has a lot of family and friends rooting for him.
00:03:24Went to Carter High School here in Dallas.
00:03:26He said, my family knows football.
00:03:28He said, when I was born, they got pictures of me.
00:03:30I'm not even a day old.
00:03:31I already have a cowboy pennant on my little tray in the hospital.
00:03:36One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
00:03:41Second and short.
00:03:42Reverse to Vanover.
00:03:46And he's to the 35, a first down.
00:03:48You know, the one thing about Vanover that I really like, Phil,
00:03:51you look at him on the returns, that pass he caught before the end of the half,
00:03:54the strength of this guy.
00:03:55In his upper body, he fears absolutely nothing.
00:03:58He knows how good and how strong he is.
00:04:00And he loves to run through and at people.
00:04:03He's a rare specimen.
00:04:04He's only 5'10", but 210 pounds.
00:04:07He's built like a small linebacker and yet has the speed,
00:04:10the best speed of the wide receivers for Kansas City.
00:04:13That's what makes him such a good return, man,
00:04:15is that size that he has, able to run through those tackles
00:04:18when they stick out those arms.
00:04:20Turning 14-6 at halftime, Kansas City moving with the ball.
00:04:23And it's Greg Hill driving to the 30-yard line.
00:04:26Nearly a five-yard pickup before Russell Maryland and company
00:04:30can make the tackle.
00:04:32And meanwhile, Irvin and Aitman and Smith and the offense for Dallas,
00:04:36they haven't played for a long time.
00:04:38Well, they haven't.
00:04:39The one thing we saw in that last play,
00:04:40Kansas City thought they could come in here and rough up this defensive line
00:04:44of the Dallas Cowboys because it's beat up
00:04:46and maybe finally the size of that offensive line
00:04:48is starting to wear down the Dallas defensive line a little.
00:04:52Second and six.
00:04:54Hill again.
00:04:56Oh, bank to Hill.
00:04:58Almost intercepted by Deion.
00:05:01Oh, he was playing interception all the way.
00:05:04It's as if he's in the huddle and the pass is thrown to him.
00:05:07You know what's the amazing part, though, Phil?
00:05:09He's got help from Brock Marion.
00:05:10He doesn't need it.
00:05:11Yeah, I'm wondering why Steve Bono threw this pass.
00:05:14Brock Marion, you're going to see him come into the play, too, right there.
00:05:17He's basically double-covered, and Deion Sanders really should have
00:05:20had the interception right there.
00:05:21You know who went to defense?
00:05:25Davis.
00:05:26Yeah, he knocked the ball away.
00:05:27Watch Davis.
00:05:28He goes to defense.
00:05:319 for 20.
00:05:33Third and six on this one.
00:05:37Steps up.
00:05:38Incomplete to Lake Dawson.
00:05:40Scott Case, an extra defensive back on the coverage.
00:05:44Well, he also got a tight end in there, too, that doesn't need to be there.
00:05:47Keith Cash is down in the middle of the field.
00:05:49This play just went too long, and they overlapped each other.
00:05:52That's what happens.
00:05:53Scott Case is back there free.
00:05:55Nobody to cover.
00:05:56He's watching Steve Bono all the way.
00:05:58He breaks on the ball as soon as he throws it, and really, Bono is fortunate.
00:06:02It wasn't a good throw.
00:06:03It would have been picked up.
00:06:04They're going to go for it.
00:06:05Yes, they are.
00:06:07Marty Schottenheimer, the ball at the 31.
00:06:10For six, what would be a 48-yard field goal again?
00:06:19Here they come.
00:06:21Bono dumps it off.
00:06:26Gets home at a yard.
00:06:27Dallas takes over on downs.
00:06:39Second half, Marty Schottenheimer electing not to go for a 48-yard field goal,
00:06:44and the Cowboys stop him on fourth down, take over at the 30.
00:06:49He's eager to go back to work.
00:06:52Hit by William White, and now there's games four.
00:06:55Well, that last play, when the Chiefs went for it on fourth down,
00:06:58I think we were all up here, and I was very surprised,
00:07:00because it was on the 30-yard line.
00:07:02It would have been a 47-yard field goal.
00:07:04Puts them within a touchdown if they make it, 14-9.
00:07:07But kicking in this place, really, I've played here many times.
00:07:10It's like kicking in the goal, because there is no wind,
00:07:13nothing to stop that football.
00:07:15So, really, a very surprising call by the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:07:18Fourth and six, he made one yard, and Dallas takes over.
00:07:22It's second down and six.
00:07:25And again, it drives down.
00:07:27Sallie Moore offside.
00:07:29Hastie finally, with help from Mark Ellens, makes the tackle,
00:07:33but won't check the penalty.
00:07:35Well, that's the difference.
00:07:36It's a bad play, Sallie Moore going offside, number 97, playing on us.
00:07:45But when Sallie Moore goes offside,
00:07:47what he does, he keeps on going.
00:07:48I mean, he makes somebody take him,
00:07:50and he doesn't just go across and stop, so he's still active in the play.
00:07:53This is the point.
00:07:54He's offside.
00:07:55Now, watch him.
00:07:56He keeps going.
00:07:57He makes somebody block him.
00:07:58When you do that, Nate Newton blocking him,
00:08:00it enables your players to get to the outside.
00:08:03After the penalty, second down and one.
00:08:13Johnston with a 41 and a first down as Chiefs try to steal the ball.
00:08:18We wondered why we haven't seen Derrick Thomas.
00:08:22Groin injury is the report we're receiving now,
00:08:24so probably will not play the rest of this Thanksgiving Day.
00:08:27That's a big loss.
00:08:29Let's go back to the field goal, which I thought they should have kicked the field goal.
00:08:32I mean, at least make the try for it, because now you score a touchdown, you win.
00:08:35I know that Marty has a lot of confidence in his defense.
00:08:38That he should have.
00:08:39But don't put him in a position.
00:08:40I mean, give him a chance to win the football game.
00:08:42If they kick the field goal and make it, now they have a chance to win the game.
00:09:03Right there, the Kansas City Chiefs had a blitz on,
00:09:06so you had single coverage on the outside.
00:09:08If you look right here, you're going to see Anthony Davis come in here,
00:09:11try to create some confusion for the Dallas offensive line,
00:09:14but they do an excellent job.
00:09:15You see Derrick Kennard going left.
00:09:18The line picks it up, gives Troy time.
00:09:20Michael Irving going inside.
00:09:22Mark Collins told us yesterday, anytime he slams and goes inside,
00:09:25it's almost always the slam pattern.
00:09:31Gets the first down, close to the 45-yard line.
00:09:35Emmitt Smith is over 1,400 for the season, or he's right at it.
00:09:41He's the only one who's gone to that height four consecutive years.
00:09:46This would be five straight years.
00:09:48Nate Newton told us about this guy here.
00:09:50He said this guy runs to daylight.
00:09:52Now, there's guys that run to darkness.
00:09:54Guys that run to darkness are guys that run to the back of the offensive linemen,
00:09:58don't look for holes, don't have their eyes open,
00:10:00they don't have the ability.
00:10:02He calls those guys that run to darkness.
00:10:04He says there are only a few guys in the league that really run to daylight.
00:10:07Excellent.
00:10:08He's 1,399.
00:10:10Needs one more yard.
00:10:11They come underneath.
00:10:12It's Irving again, and a shirt-tail tackle by Hasty for day 43.
00:10:18But talking about Nate Newton, I like what he said.
00:10:20He says, you know, a true lineman, if you're really a true lineman in the NFL,
00:10:23and he made this point when they got behind the 49ers by 14 points,
00:10:27you still should come in and run that football.
00:10:30Keep running it up first and second down, and then if you have to throw it,
00:10:33throw it.
00:10:34But don't just start throwing it when you get behind in football games.
00:10:36So, Nate, let's open up those holes.
00:10:39Well, come on.
00:10:40All offensive linemen would rather run blocked than pass blocked.
00:10:43Well, when you weigh 325 pounds, you like to.
00:10:45Not all these guys like to run blocked.
00:10:47Yeah, all of them.
00:10:48Every single one of them, 100%.
00:10:50Second down and six.
00:10:52There's the 1,400 mark as he goes to the 39.
00:10:56I want to repeat that because it's significant.
00:10:58You know how great this 26-year-old back has been.
00:11:01No one in the history of the game had ever rushed four consecutive years 1,400 yards.
00:11:06Emmitt did it last year.
00:11:07Now he's done it five straight years.
00:11:10But he's, you know, again now.
00:11:12We'll go a little bit further with the offensive line.
00:11:14Now when you have a guy like Emmitt, I want to run blocked all day long.
00:11:18But they have a load up on that offensive line.
00:11:21We already showed you 320.
00:11:23You can't imagine what they eat for Turkey Day.
00:11:26Oh, you better have that oven full.
00:11:30Aikman.
00:11:33Eric Bjornsson, the rookie from Washington.
00:11:36That's only his fifth catch of the year.
00:11:38And Bjornsson out of bounds.
00:11:40Looks to have a first down at the 35.
00:11:44Well, we credit him.
00:11:46It's nice to be able to talk about offensive linemen.
00:11:48And Newton and Thune and Allen.
00:11:50And Eric Williams, Ray Donaldson replaced by Derek Kennard.
00:11:53Here are some other great teams.
00:11:54The 49ers Super Bowl team.
00:11:56The Hogs of the Redskins in 82.
00:11:58Frank O'Harris's blockers in 74.
00:12:00Green Bay's for Jim Taylor and Horning.
00:12:04And the Barts are in 66.
00:12:05Look at how the weights have grown up.
00:12:07Packers 245.
00:12:08Every linebacker in football weighs 245.
00:12:13Right into the waiting arms of Tracy Simeon at the 33-yard line.
00:12:18Let's take a look at Nate Newton.
00:12:20The left guard, number 61.
00:12:22Here you see him up top.
00:12:23Now, watch him come across.
00:12:24Now, for a big man, the one thing he really does and what sets him apart,
00:12:28he has those good feet.
00:12:29He's able to come out and pull on some of those trapping plays.
00:12:32Really, the Cowboys don't do a lot of trapping.
00:12:34They like to run straight ahead and use their size.
00:12:36He has those good feet and that huge rear end.
00:12:39That will move some people off the line of scrimmage.
00:12:42Now, you know, I look at this.
00:12:43His calves aren't that big.
00:12:44They support him.
00:12:47Everything on him is big.
00:12:50He's got road burns on his upper arms.
00:12:54Aikman to Novacek.
00:12:57Defender foul.
00:12:58Now, Novacek, a forward to Kathleen.
00:13:01Hurdles his way into the end zone.
00:13:05That's Jay Novacek.
00:13:17He's going to be singled up on Tracy Simeon right there.
00:13:19He's being very aggressive.
00:13:20He falls just before you see Novacek make the catch, and look at that.
00:13:24Mark Collins going down for the low tackle to take the big tight end down,
00:13:28and he hurdles right over the top of him for the easy touchdown.
00:13:32He was the Western Athletic Conference champion in college at Wyoming,
00:13:38and he showed his track and field skills on that touchdown.
00:13:4233 yards, and Borneo knocks him the extra point.
00:13:4621 to 6.
00:13:4870 yards, 9 plays, 33 on the touchdown.
00:13:53Aikman to the tight end, Novacek.
00:13:57It's a sellout of some 65,000 plus.
00:14:00Delighted with a Dallas 70-yard drive and 9 plays.
00:14:04Jay Novacek, who had been shut out for three games, gets his first score in four.
00:14:10Down to Kamaric Vanover.
00:14:14Takes that first tackle every time, doesn't he?
00:14:16And more.
00:14:18Into the inside, all the way to the 48-yard line.
00:14:21This kid's got to get a lot of votes for the Pro Bowl as a special teamer.
00:14:25He has been sensational.
00:14:27Unfortunately for Kansas City, there is a flag down.
00:14:31Charlie Williams finally made the stop of Vanover after a 43-yard return.
00:14:36Some of it will be taken back.
00:14:38I'll tell you, he is so strong when he's running with that football.
00:14:41Holding number 44 of the receiving team on the return.
00:14:4610 yards on the spot of the foul.
00:14:49First down.
00:14:51On the left of the screen there, you see the holding right there on the left of the screen.
00:14:55Vanover, the thing about him, he loves running, but look at the strength in him.
00:15:00And he doesn't lose his balance.
00:15:04He's leading Kansas City 21-6 here in the third.
00:15:07Here's the touchdown to Novacek.
00:15:09Well, here's Jay Novacek right here.
00:15:11And George Jamison's covering.
00:15:13Watch when Novacek goes out, and he comes back inside.
00:15:16George Jamison playing the outside route.
00:15:18Gets fake, falls down.
00:15:20Now there's only the safety Mark Collins to make the tackle.
00:15:24A lot of style points on that hurdle of the tackle for Novacek.
00:15:30For the penalty, Kansas City starting at the 15-yard line.
00:15:34And Chad Hennings makes another defensive play for Dallas.
00:15:37All right, Dickie, do your track stuff.
00:15:39Here comes Novacek.
00:15:40Do it.
00:15:41Look at this.
00:15:42Edwin Moses would be proud.
00:15:43Look at that.
00:15:44Almost perfect form, getting that foot down, swinging that leg through, and on to the next hurdle.
00:15:48On to the Olympics.
00:15:50He is such a talented part of this Dallas offense.
00:15:55Over 50 catches this year.
00:15:57He's been more productive than any tight end in the decade of the 90s.
00:16:05And second down.
00:16:06Bono with a handoff and very little again.
00:16:10Here's Kimball Anders, hit by Edwards and Smith.
00:16:14The two very fast outside linebackers for Dallas.
00:16:18And those linebackers do run well here in the silver and blue.
00:16:23All right, you've run two plays now.
00:16:25Running plays to hold the linebackers.
00:16:27Hadn't done a thing.
00:16:28I think you're not holding anybody and you're not blocking anybody.
00:16:31Now I think it's time to put the ball up in the air and get down the field.
00:16:38Slaughter to the left.
00:16:39Brown on him.
00:16:40Dion is to the far side on Dawson.
00:16:45North Smith over there.
00:16:47And a wave and complete.
00:16:50Roy Davis in the first down as he was able to beat Dion Sanders.
00:16:5419 yards in the play.
00:16:55Brock Merian finally got him out of bounds.
00:16:58Well, again, the Dallas Cowboys blitz leaves the receivers in man coverage.
00:17:03And Dion Sanders, if there is one weakness he has as a corner,
00:17:06when you study him on film, he will let you throw the inside routes,
00:17:10especially those crossing routes.
00:17:12And that's what we saw right there.
00:17:13That's why Kansas City was successful.
00:17:154-12 left in the third period.
00:17:19Kansas City down 21-6.
00:17:27Lay action and Bono.
00:17:29Going deep for Davis.
00:17:31Dion Sanders in possession again.
00:17:34Well, that's what I said.
00:17:35Oh, no.
00:17:36I mean, I could see Bono looking and I could see Davis going down
00:17:40and I could see four guys covering Davis plus Dion.
00:17:43So that's six.
00:17:45Well, look at all the guys.
00:17:47Come here.
00:17:48You know what happens in quarterback?
00:17:49You're playing quarterback.
00:17:50Most of the times when you see this coverage,
00:17:52this receiver should be open for you.
00:17:54But right there, you can see the reaction, not only of Sanders,
00:17:57but Larry Brown coming off the other side of the corner
00:17:59and taking and giving the coverage.
00:18:01Where was he?
00:18:02There was no one else out in the pattern.
00:18:04I would hope so.
00:18:11And it was complete to Webster Slaughter
00:18:13and the former Cleveland Brown and Houston Oiler
00:18:16as the first down at midfield.
00:18:18If you're ever going to get Dion to commit to anything,
00:18:20just keep throwing this in route until he does make a break
00:18:23and then you go up on Dion because you're absolutely right.
00:18:26He'll give you this inside, but you are not going to beat him deep.
00:18:29And I don't care if you think you have him beat.
00:18:31He can close on the ball better than anyone I've ever seen in the game.
00:18:36He never agrees the best quarterback or man-covered player you've ever seen.
00:18:41Honestly, it's not even close.
00:18:43I'm so impressed when I watch him on film and everything.
00:18:46I've never seen a corner do the plate coverage
00:18:49and take away passes like he does.
00:18:51When you throw the ball on the sidelines against him,
00:18:55you are taking a chance that he will intercept it.
00:18:57But the thing is, not only intercept it, but try to score with it.
00:19:00That's what really sets him apart.
00:19:01See, the other thing about throwing it to him underneath like that, Phil,
00:19:05we know that he has a groin pull.
00:19:07He hasn't practiced the last two days.
00:19:09He hasn't practiced at all.
00:19:10That's one of the reasons why he's not with the offense.
00:19:12But we know that.
00:19:13So it's very difficult for him to make that cut stop to come back to the inside.
00:19:17But when you run deep on him, he's got a straight run.
00:19:19He can make that run.
00:19:21Hill picked up five yards on first down,
00:19:24and now they move Hill out and Bono running out of time.
00:19:27Hall's time with 2.37 left in the third.
00:19:36It's happened to belong to Farrellon Sanders, Deion's wife.
00:19:41And there's Deion Jr.
00:19:44He wants his turkey now.
00:19:47He's hungry.
00:19:50So are the Chiefs, down 21 to 6.
00:19:53Second down and five at the Cowboy 45.
00:19:56Late in the third.
00:19:58Bono comes, throws wide open, late Dawson.
00:20:02Touchdown.
00:20:05Man, was that beautiful.
00:20:07I'm telling you, Bono that time, that pump faking it.
00:20:11Again, I like to go back to the offensive line.
00:20:14It gives him time.
00:20:15But that pump faking it, Dawson down the middle,
00:20:17I mean that gave him time to clear everything, Phil.
00:20:20Yeah, it was an excellent job.
00:20:21Excellent play designed by the Kansas City Chiefs,
00:20:24and Bono does an excellent job of looking after safety
00:20:27and creating that big hole down the middle.
00:20:2945 yards, Bono to late Dawson.
00:20:32The former Notre Dame star has his fifth touchdown of the year,
00:20:36and the Chiefs down 21-12 will go for two
00:20:40and try to get it back on a seven-point deficit.
00:20:43Slaughter goes right, and Willie Davis says,
00:20:47no, no, come back over here with me to the left.
00:20:51Marcus Allen not in the game.
00:20:52Anders the only running back, and he goes into the path.
00:20:56Bono.
00:21:01Slaughter was the closest Chief and remains 21-12,
00:21:06two and a half left in the third.
00:21:12The 95 winner of the True Value NFL Man of the Year
00:21:15will be honored in Phoenix the week before Super Bowl XXX.
00:21:18Nominees from the Chiefs include Neal Smith, Joe Phillips,
00:21:21and Joe Valerio.
00:21:22Dallas nominees Troy Aikman, Daryl Johnston,
00:21:25and Russell Maryland.
00:21:27Men in uniform who in their community give back to others,
00:21:32and we salute each one of the nominees.
00:21:35On this Thanksgiving Day, Lake Dawson,
00:21:38with his first catch, 45-yard touchdown
00:21:40to complete a long Kansas City drive of 83 yards.
00:21:44Dion is on the field.
00:21:46He's down at the 10-yard line as Lynn Elliott
00:21:49kicks it the other way.
00:21:51Into the reverse.
00:21:52Kevin Williams starts toward Dion.
00:21:54Fakes to him.
00:21:55Keeps it.
00:21:57And it's out to the 35-yard line.
00:22:01Let's go back to the Kansas City touchdown.
00:22:04Well, how does a receiver get so wide open
00:22:06against a defense like this?
00:22:08Here's Lake Dawson right here, Darren Smith,
00:22:10but the key is Brock Marion watching come outside
00:22:13and open up that big hole down the middle for Lake Dawson.
00:22:17He goes with the fake outside.
00:22:19The pump fake by Steve Bono makes Brock Marion go to the outside.
00:22:22That's why Lake Dawson's wide open down the middle.
00:22:25Darren Smith has good speed,
00:22:28but not fast enough to stay with Dawson.
00:22:3221-12, Dallas.
00:22:34219 left in the third.
00:22:40Not much there. Maybe a yard.
00:22:42Not to belabor a point, but let's go back to the field goal
00:22:44attempt that was not made or didn't go for.
00:22:47They went for it on fourth down, Kansas City Chiefs.
00:22:49Had they made the field goal,
00:22:51that would have given them 16 points.
00:22:53The reason I say 16, it's 12 now.
00:22:55They would have kicked a one and put it within five points.
00:22:58Now they are a touchdown and a field goal away.
00:23:01They would have been just a touchdown to take the lead,
00:23:04and it changes the complexion of the ball game.
00:23:08Well, it changes the way you call your plays on both sides of the ball,
00:23:11even your defense.
00:23:12Maybe now you've got to take an extra chance
00:23:14because you need that extra possession to score the other points.
00:23:17Nova check in motion on second and nine.
00:23:21Hickman, incomplete, and a flag down.
00:23:24His receiver, Michael Irvin, knocked down by Tracy Simeon.
00:23:29Tracy Simeon, you know, it applies to linebackers along with defensive backs.
00:23:35When a receiver comes underneath, you can't hit him before the ball gets there.
00:23:40Well, he was only about two seconds early, so it wasn't too bad.
00:23:44Not only.
00:23:46Pass interference, number 54 of the defense.
00:23:50Automatic first down.
00:23:53Tracy Simeon does a good job.
00:23:55What he does, he stays in position, but he sees Michael Irvin coming across,
00:23:59and instead of just looking for the pass, he decides,
00:24:01well, I'm going to take a free shot at him because he's coming in my territory.
00:24:04Right, and he's also within the five-yard limit of hitting the guy,
00:24:07so you can't hit him in there.
00:24:08The only problem is you can't hit him when the ball's in the air.
00:24:13Only the third penalty.
00:24:15First down on the 39-yard line for Dallas.
00:24:20Smith twists out of a tackle, and then he sees Tracy Rodgers right there,
00:24:25so it goes down.
00:24:26Keith Traylor was the man who was in the backfield,
00:24:30and Emmett in pain.
00:24:39Keith Traylor, number 94.
00:24:41Watch his penetration.
00:24:43Keith Traylor is the guy that's going to come inside right here.
00:24:46He's being held at the line of service.
00:24:48He just knocks Emmett back to the outside.
00:24:51Now, what happens here is this.
00:24:53Does he pull his hamstring?
00:24:54I mean, it might be his hamstring again.
00:24:56He goes down, yeah.
00:24:57He was on his toes on that left foot as he fell down.
00:25:01You know, we talked to this team, and you know,
00:25:03I know you guys have talked to other teams and other players.
00:25:08And look at Emmett here.
00:25:09He makes that stretch, and that's when he goes down.
00:25:11Now, he might have twisted his ankle and done his old man.
00:25:13It looked like his ankle was caught underneath him just a little,
00:25:16and there was a real hard torque on it just as he gets hit.
00:25:19Watch right here.
00:25:24Yeah, I don't know if it's his left ankle.
00:25:26Right there, when he turns, his foot stays planted,
00:25:31and that torque on it might have got the ankle or the inside of his knee.
00:25:35I'm not sure.
00:25:36You know, what I was going to say, I want to ask you guys.
00:25:38We talked to the Dallas Cowboys,
00:25:40and you talked to all these other people in the defensive
00:25:42and all these other people around.
00:25:43All right, I want you to think about something.
00:25:45When you look at the Dallas Cowboys, the three guys, Eggman, Irving,
00:25:49and this guy, Emmett Smith, who is the most important?
00:25:54Well, that's a good question, and we get a different answer from everybody.
00:25:58Like Barry Switzer, we talked to him.
00:26:00He thought maybe the most important was Michael Irving
00:26:04because he says, he is my only receiver on this football team outside.
00:26:08If we lose him, we might as well shut up camp and go home.
00:26:11Or just run the ball from here on out.
00:26:12That brings it, Dick, back to who do you think it is?
00:26:15Well, as we look at owner Jerry Jones, and that's part of the franchise,
00:26:19the big three, Emmett Smith being helped off the field.
00:26:23Well, I think it's this man.
00:26:25I think it's Emmett because until you stop him,
00:26:28I don't think you can beat the Cowboys.
00:26:30All right, I want to be the guy that takes the third guy.
00:26:32I take Troy Eggman, and the only reason I'm doing that is because
00:26:35the only two losses that the Dallas Cowboys have
00:26:38is when Troy Eggman's been knocked out of the ball game.
00:26:40Then they were unable to really move the football.
00:26:42They had this guy healthy, and they had Irving healthy.
00:26:45So I think that, you know, but being realistic, Dick,
00:26:49it takes all three of these guys to move this off.
00:26:51That's what it is.
00:26:52I mean, it's just a great scenario of teamwork,
00:26:56having a good wide receiver like Michael Irving,
00:26:59who's a wonderful quarterback, who's accurate throwing to him.
00:27:01That helps, too.
00:27:03Our second and 12 is Sherman Williams,
00:27:05the rookie from Alabama, replaces Smith into the flank.
00:27:09Johnston with no game, maybe even a loss of a yard.
00:27:12Well read by Martin Bayless.
00:27:15Do you see what Martin Bayless did, Phil?
00:27:17He goes down to Johnston, and the only way
00:27:19that you're really going to bring this guy down,
00:27:21as small as Bayless is and as big as Johnston is,
00:27:23is to hit him right in his feet.
00:27:26Now they're shielding our view with that towel
00:27:31as they look at Emmitt Smith.
00:27:35He probably pulled his pants down to see.
00:27:38No, they're looking at his knee, and that's what they don't want you to see.
00:27:41It's his knee.
00:27:46Four down, 11.
00:27:50Eggman, he's hit by Smith,
00:27:53and Neil Smith has his eighth sack of the year.
00:27:59That's where you have to give credit to your secondary again.
00:28:02Good coverage downfield.
00:28:04They make Troy Eggman look for that second and third receiver.
00:28:07That gives Neil Smith just that extra touch,
00:28:10the nice rip uppercut, and gets to Troy Eggman.
00:28:13And the other thing, too, Dick, they forget about the run.
00:28:15They know they're not going to run the football.
00:28:17It's third and long, but again, Emmitt Smith is not there.
00:28:20And that's the end of the third quarter.
00:28:22Dallas 21, Kansas City 12.
00:28:24Back after these words from your local station.
00:28:29Now, boys, look at their star running back, Emmitt Smith's left knee
00:28:35as we open the fourth quarter.
00:28:37Chris Borneo for the injured John Jett will be the punter.
00:28:42Van over back at the 30 of Kansas City.
00:28:46End over end.
00:28:48Good kick, however.
00:28:50Great bounce.
00:28:51Borneo, what a kick!
00:28:53As he sums for Jett all the way to the 13-yard line.
00:28:57A 56-yard punt for Borneo.
00:29:03The 14-yard line, who carves the turkey?
00:29:05I'm in charge of the Chardonnay and the Bordeaux.
00:29:08You want to take the turkey?
00:29:10I thought the thing was, who is the turkey?
00:29:12I thought the thing was, who is the turkey?
00:29:14Yeah, that's right, that's more important.
00:29:16Borneo, wide open as the tight end Cash runs to take him out.
00:29:20And Cash, first down at the 32-yard line.
00:29:2318 on the play.
00:29:25But the focus here in Dallas and the concern, of course, is on number 22, Emmitt Smith.
00:29:29All right, we're going to show you.
00:29:31We're going to stop something here.
00:29:32Watch Emmitt Smith, and I'm going to circle a couple things.
00:29:34His ankle and his knee.
00:29:35Yeah, his ankle and his knee.
00:29:36Right here is where it's going to happen.
00:29:38Watch this.
00:29:40Never moves.
00:29:41And watch, his whole body will turn this way.
00:29:43And when he does that, his ankle stays.
00:29:45And there's where his knee gets hurt, right there.
00:29:47Look at his ankle on the ground.
00:29:48His foot, when he comes back, you'll see that step there.
00:29:51And then that's when he goes down.
00:29:53First down, Chiefs.
00:29:54They trail by nine.
00:29:59They give this to Hill.
00:30:00He's got terrific speed.
00:30:02And Hill, who went from Dallas High School to Texas A&M,
00:30:05to a number one pick for the Chiefs,
00:30:07running hard out to the 40, a gain of eight more.
00:30:10Aaron Smith made the tackle.
00:30:13And the Chiefs are perhaps the best fourth quarter team in the NFL.
00:30:17Look at the games where they've been behind in the fourth.
00:30:20Down two touchdowns, the Giants won in overtime.
00:30:23Beat the Raiders.
00:30:24Beat the Browns.
00:30:25Lost to the Browns.
00:30:27Trailing in the fourth, and beat the Chargers.
00:30:30And they've won three overtime games.
00:30:34Play action for Bono.
00:30:36Well protected.
00:30:37Goes long.
00:30:38Van Over.
00:30:39What a catch!
00:30:42Against Larry Brown, and the rookie from Florida State
00:30:45has continued impact on this game.
00:30:49Let me ask you something.
00:30:50What, tell me, what was Larry Brown waiting on?
00:30:52It looked like he had great position, Phil.
00:30:54Well, you're going to see right here,
00:30:56he's trying not to cause interference.
00:30:58I don't know if he knows the ball's coming.
00:31:00Van Over waits for the last second to reach out and catch it.
00:31:03Good job by Tameric Van Over,
00:31:06keeping himself between the fender and the ball.
00:31:08Watch right here.
00:31:09He sees the ball coming.
00:31:10Larry Brown really never looking for it.
00:31:12Waits too long.
00:31:13He never looked at the ball.
00:31:14He never looked back for the ball, Brown.
00:31:1640-yard catch for Van Over, who has three receptions today.
00:31:20Now it's Hill, and Hill drives close to the 15, a gain of five.
00:31:25And we started the telecast today
00:31:28talking about the 46-man depth of Kansas City
00:31:31and how in the fourth quarter they've outplayed teams all year long.
00:31:35Some feel it's because they've used all their players
00:31:38and they're fresher in the fourth than the opposition.
00:31:41Is that what we're seeing here?
00:31:43You're seeing it with wide receivers.
00:31:44You see it all the way across on defense.
00:31:46They're still fresh.
00:31:47And the other thing is, as soon as Emmitt went out,
00:31:50the defense picked it up, and the offense now knows
00:31:53the defense can pick it up.
00:31:54All we have to do is score.
00:31:56Second down and five.
00:31:58Fake to Hill.
00:32:00Oh, no.
00:32:01Oh, is he?
00:32:02It bubbles.
00:32:03Darren Smith could go all the way.
00:32:06Smith has one man to beat.
00:32:08Jim Gronard gets caught from behind inside the 10.
00:32:16Flag is down.
00:32:19Greg Hill, racing from 20 yards back, made the tackle.
00:32:25I'll tell you what.
00:32:26After you describe the hit, I'm going to tell you about Gronard.
00:32:29You talk about a guy that can move the center.
00:32:31Well, one thing the Dallas Cowboy defense was not going to let
00:32:34the Kansas City offense do is run these bootlegs.
00:32:37They were going to keep Steve Bono in the pocket to make him throw it.
00:32:41There was a good example of it.
00:32:42That's why I called the fumble.
00:32:44All right.
00:32:45Now, here's the fumble.
00:32:47That's Tony Tobert.
00:32:48Tobert is hitting right here.
00:32:49Boom.
00:32:50The ball goes down.
00:32:51Now, number 61 is the center, Gronard.
00:32:54You see him being blocked right there.
00:32:55Now, watch who gets downfield, outruns the linebacker,
00:32:59and forces his team to come back in from the other side.
00:33:02Now, there's Hill, but look at 61, Gronard, the center,
00:33:05who was behind him when he picked up the ball.
00:33:07That is some kind of hustle.
00:33:11Now, Fred A. Tobert forcing the second fumble this year,
00:33:16and Darren Smith, with a penalty against Kansas City,
00:33:20half the distance, takes it to the four-yard line.
00:33:24What a turnabout with Bono and the Chiefs with momentum,
00:33:28trying to cut into that 21-12 lead and down to the 15,
00:33:32and suddenly it's the Cowboys only four yards away
00:33:36from adding to their nine-point lead.
00:33:39Kansas City had everything going its way in offense,
00:33:41but then the Dallas defense, like we said earlier,
00:33:44they've been waiting all day for these bootlegs.
00:33:47Charles Haley and Tony Tobert told us
00:33:49they were not going to let Steve Bono fake one way
00:33:51and roll out and get those Chief passing yards.
00:33:54Sherman Williams now behind Darrell Johnston.
00:34:02Maybe a yard into the center of that Kansas City defense,
00:34:06and the irony of all this is the Chiefs
00:34:08are the kings of the turnovers.
00:34:10They have a plus 11 on the year.
00:34:12In the 90s, they're so far ahead,
00:34:14they're out twice the number of turnovers of the team,
00:34:17the Giants, in second place,
00:34:19and that is the first turnover of this game,
00:34:22and it goes big against Kansas City.
00:34:25You got a feeling maybe we may be watching
00:34:28Super Bowl 29 1⁄2 today?
00:34:31We got 30.
00:34:35Second and all.
00:34:38Gateman with a fake.
00:34:41Novichak well covered,
00:34:43trying to weave his way through three defenders.
00:34:47We saw Jerry Jones from his luxury box earlier.
00:34:51He has since made the elevator trip down to the field
00:34:54to console Emmitt Smith.
00:34:58Well, that kind of tells me, it warns me, Dick,
00:35:01that that could be some bad news,
00:35:03that he's trying to come down and console Emmitt,
00:35:05like it could be more than just a game or two out,
00:35:08that it could be a serious injury to his name.
00:35:12Going to take Smith into the x-ray room.
00:35:15Sprained left knee.
00:35:16Meanwhile, third and goal for Gateman at the four.
00:35:22Offside.
00:35:24Well, it's incomplete, and another flag,
00:35:26as Hastie defends Michael Urban.
00:35:31Well, the flag was not against Hastie.
00:35:33That was a late one coming out, Dick,
00:35:34and it was right there in front of him,
00:35:35so it looked like it might have been interference, too.
00:35:37It was just offside.
00:35:38Offside.
00:35:39Number 50.
00:35:40Happiness is to the goal.
00:35:42Repeat third down.
00:35:44Third and goal from the two,
00:35:46as they have Emmitt Smith aboard,
00:35:49and Picard taking him back to the Dallas Cowboy locker room
00:35:54and for x-rays,
00:35:56and those pictures will be as important as any seen
00:35:59in Dallas over this Thanksgiving holiday.
00:36:04Well, Jerry Jones on the field.
00:36:05I love what he told my Dick a week ago.
00:36:07I paid $140 million.
00:36:09I can go down on the field any time I want.
00:36:14And the body language of Emmitt Smith
00:36:16and the people around him does tend to make me believe
00:36:19that this could be a serious injury to his knee.
00:36:22We have a timeout with 11.04 left in the fourth quarter.
00:36:31The Cowboys at the door, 21-12.
00:36:34This is just moments ago.
00:36:35Jim Gray down in the tunnel that leads up to the locker room.
00:36:39All right, Dick.
00:36:40Well, Emmitt Smith came off the field.
00:36:41The doctors and the trainers for the Cowboys
00:36:43told me it's a sprained knee.
00:36:44They're going to x-ray it right now
00:36:46to determine the severity.
00:36:47All I can tell you is Emmitt is in quite a bit of pain
00:36:49and he had tears in his eyes
00:36:50as he went into the locker room on that stretcher.
00:36:52Dick?
00:36:53All right, Jim.
00:36:54If you hear anything else, I know you'll call in.
00:36:57Big play here for the Chiefs defense
00:36:59to stay in the game.
00:37:00Third and goal at the two.
00:37:06Aikman threw it away.
00:37:08Darrell Johnston was well covered by Doug Terry.
00:37:11Terry, the star of the win against Houston on Sunday night
00:37:15with that big fumble-forcing hit.
00:37:18Well, you know, that's really something unusual
00:37:20because we showed you a graphic of the Dallas Cowboys
00:37:23early inside the 20-yard line in the red zone
00:37:26of how they score.
00:37:27And here's Emmitt Smith not in the football game, Dick.
00:37:29They get the ball down there inside the 10-yard line
00:37:32and the only part that they moved was on a penalty.
00:37:35Yeah, they actually had four chances with the penalty
00:37:37that knock it in from the four.
00:37:39Now settled for the 20-yard field goal attempt by Bonio.
00:37:45And he easily knocks it through.
00:37:47Field goal is 24 to 12.
00:37:50And Kansas City still within two touchdowns.
00:37:53Yeah, a lot of times the Dallas Cowboys,
00:37:55they get down near the goal line in third and two.
00:37:57I would say it's at least 50-50
00:37:59they're going to run it or throw it.
00:38:00And Emmitt Smith out of there, it's probably 100% pass.
00:38:04Today, the MetLife Blimp cruising the skies
00:38:06above Texas Stadium and how beautiful the day.
00:38:09Powered by twin engines,
00:38:10capable of reaching speeds greater than 57 miles an hour.
00:38:14Snoopy One can navigate at altitudes
00:38:16in excess of 6,000 feet and prefers drumsticks.
00:38:20Thank you on this Thanksgiving Day.
00:38:22Isn't that a beautiful picture, though?
00:38:24That old line by the Texas Ram put the roof in the arena
00:38:28so that God could see his team.
00:38:31A further update on Emmitt Smith.
00:38:33Let's go back to Jim Gray.
00:38:35Okay, thank you.
00:38:36We have an MRI and that gave us some hope.
00:38:38It wasn't as loose as all the other needs we've seen
00:38:41that need to be operated on.
00:38:43Jerry, thank you.
00:38:44If you get any further information, get back to us.
00:38:46All right, Jim.
00:38:47Van over with a kick.
00:38:48Return out to the 27-28
00:38:50where Billy Davis made the tackle.
00:38:53Steve Bono with plenty of time, 10.45.
00:38:57Remember, Kansas City has spent one timeout
00:38:59here in the second half, so they have two.
00:39:03Hey, you've got to like Jim Gray now.
00:39:05He said to Jerry,
00:39:06Jerry Jones, if you get any more information,
00:39:08get back to us on that, will you?
00:39:11And you know what?
00:39:12I think Jerry will.
00:39:13I think so.
00:39:14Jim told him, get back to me as soon as you can.
00:39:17And he's back down by Darren Smith.
00:39:30He wanted a quick slant, didn't he?
00:39:32Yeah, you know, it's interesting.
00:39:33We saw that long pass back in the last series,
00:39:36right before that fumble.
00:39:37They finally got the other corner, Larry Brown,
00:39:40singled up on a receiver one-on-one,
00:39:43and I would think they're going to try to do that again,
00:39:45but I think the Cowboys should be pretty smart
00:39:47and just keep Deion in the singles.
00:39:49Brown is playing the defensive right side.
00:39:55To the left is Deion against Lake Dawson.
00:40:00Underneath they go.
00:40:04Kimball Anders slips away across the 40,
00:40:08or to the 40, enough for a first down.
00:40:10Ten yards for Anders,
00:40:12who leads the Chiefs coming in with 47 catches.
00:40:15Well, let's take a look right here.
00:40:16Here's Deion Sanders.
00:40:17Now, look, this is on the far left hash.
00:40:19Look where the rest of the Cowboys are.
00:40:21They're going to let him cover this whole area of the field,
00:40:23and really, Steve Bono, again,
00:40:25wanted to throw the ball down here to the single coverage,
00:40:28but you just can't.
00:40:29He's got it well covered.
00:40:31Kimball Anders did a great job on Dixon Edwards.
00:40:33He just pulled back a little bit, let him commit himself,
00:40:35and he picked up the first down.
00:40:37That's 40 seconds of remanning to Vanover.
00:40:40And Vanover equals again.
00:40:43Oh, he is tough to the 46-yard line.
00:40:46Those are the kinds of moves where you're being hit,
00:40:48bombarded from all sides,
00:40:50where the ball often pops free,
00:40:52but he doesn't buckle.
00:40:54You see what he did, though?
00:40:55As soon as he caught the ball,
00:40:56watch what Vanover, number 87, does.
00:40:58Watch the explosion.
00:40:59Now, straight up the field.
00:41:01I don't care who's out there.
00:41:02He almost broke the tackle.
00:41:05You think he hasn't had an influence today?
00:41:07212 yards from Vanover.
00:41:10108 on kickoff.
00:41:11There you see it.
00:41:1212, punt.
00:41:1385 on reception.
00:41:14And seven more on a rush.
00:41:16He should throw one somewhere along here, shouldn't he?
00:41:23Second down.
00:41:25It's Leroy Thompson to the 50,
00:41:27and very close to that stick.
00:41:31We'll see if they move the chains.
00:41:32Russell Maryland makes the tackle.
00:41:34It is a first down.
00:41:35Clock running, 843.
00:41:37Michael Irvin watches.
00:41:39As he and Aikman, I'm sure,
00:41:41all the Cowboys and their fans,
00:41:43their thoughts are back in that Dallas locker room,
00:41:46hoping that Emmett isn't seriously injured.
00:41:49Well, the good news we heard, though,
00:41:51is the knee is stable,
00:41:52and it didn't move around when the doctors were shaking it,
00:41:54so that tends to...
00:41:55You hope, you believe that it's not a serious injury.
00:41:59Bono goes long for Davis,
00:42:02and Deion limping as he pulls up,
00:42:05but he has enough speed when he needs it to cover.
00:42:09You know, when you look at this thing,
00:42:11though, with Davis, Dick,
00:42:12and you just wonder, now,
00:42:14could Deion have gone inside?
00:42:15I think Deion knows that the ball's overthrown.
00:42:17Can he get inside?
00:42:18Lookit, he is right there.
00:42:20But there's a good shot right there.
00:42:21One thing Steve Bono's got to do in those situations,
00:42:24Deion, while you're watching,
00:42:25He's on the outside.
00:42:26Lead the receiver across the field, not up it.
00:42:29When you lead the receiver up the field,
00:42:31Deion's going to outrun you,
00:42:32but across the field,
00:42:33the receiver can keep Deion behind him.
00:42:36Oh!
00:42:3718 for 32.
00:42:39260 yards to run.
00:42:41Gets another 10.
00:42:43Nope.
00:42:44No catch.
00:42:45It's a call against Western Slater.
00:42:48Dirty Switzer said,
00:42:49that's good officiating.
00:42:53I think Webster Slater,
00:42:54what he did, though,
00:42:55he went down a little bit too soon on this play.
00:42:58He should have come back just a little bit further.
00:43:00He's down on his knees.
00:43:01Well, I'll tell you,
00:43:02that is very close.
00:43:03Oh, he's got it between his knees.
00:43:05It went between his knees.
00:43:07On the ground, see?
00:43:09No catch.
00:43:10There it is.
00:43:11That's when it touches.
00:43:17Third and 10.
00:43:20Third and 10.
00:43:27Bono against Sanders,
00:43:29and overthrows Lake Dawson,
00:43:31the target.
00:43:32Tony Tolbert,
00:43:33who forced a fumble earlier,
00:43:35hit Bono as he released.
00:43:37They're going to punt the ball away.
00:43:39They have 8 minutes and 2 seconds.
00:43:41The Chiefs,
00:43:42two timeouts.
00:43:43That's all they have left.
00:43:44That pass,
00:43:45you know,
00:43:47you can play one against Dion.
00:43:49No, you can play,
00:43:51yeah, on the outside,
00:43:52you can play one.
00:43:53Yeah, you're going to go over there on third and 10?
00:43:55I mean,
00:43:56there are other places to go in this field.
00:43:58Well, they should be convinced
00:43:59that you just can't get deep on him
00:44:01on these post patterns,
00:44:02but they keep trying them,
00:44:03so.
00:44:04There we are.
00:44:06Gets it high.
00:44:07Williams forced a fumble
00:44:09with a fair catch
00:44:10at the 13-yard line.
00:44:1237 on the punt.
00:44:17Neil Smith,
00:44:18his hero or heroine,
00:44:20said my mom,
00:44:21Letitia.
00:44:22She raised three of us,
00:44:23and if I could be like anyone,
00:44:25be like her,
00:44:26and she's the greatest cook.
00:44:27We saw her at work in New Orleans last year,
00:44:29fed the whole Chiefs team,
00:44:30making her favorite sweet potato pie.
00:44:34Oh, and I'll tell you what,
00:44:35it is low calorie.
00:44:37It's not salted butter.
00:44:39Look how good that is.
00:44:41Oh,
00:44:42you think that's,
00:44:43wouldn't you love to have a taste
00:44:45of the final product, Paul?
00:44:46I mean,
00:44:47wouldn't you just,
00:44:48with enough to make a grown man salivate,
00:44:50isn't it?
00:44:51Give me a piece.
00:44:52This has been hand-delivered
00:44:53all the way from the Smith household,
00:44:55so that we could share
00:44:56on this Thanksgiving day.
00:44:58All right,
00:44:59I'm just going to let you have a little bit of it.
00:45:00Be careful with your fingers, Dick.
00:45:01There you go.
00:45:02What do you think?
00:45:03Oh.
00:45:06I don't know yet.
00:45:07Hey, Paul.
00:45:08I don't know yet.
00:45:09I don't know yet.
00:45:10Have you ever tasted anything
00:45:11you didn't like?
00:45:13Oh, that's good.
00:45:16Dickman from his own end zone,
00:45:18pumps,
00:45:19throws long,
00:45:20incomplete.
00:45:21Mark Collins
00:45:22and James Hastie
00:45:24double cover Michael Irvin
00:45:26and Dion.
00:45:27You wonder,
00:45:28Dion keeps playing
00:45:29with that groin pull,
00:45:30and you've gone through that
00:45:32and seen teammates still,
00:45:33and you just wonder,
00:45:34even with the extra days off,
00:45:36to get ready for Washington
00:45:37a week from Sunday,
00:45:38if Dion might be better off
00:45:41taking a day off.
00:45:42Well,
00:45:43I think it's a blessing in disguise
00:45:44for the Cowboys.
00:45:45Of course,
00:45:46they get these few extra days
00:45:47and it was really,
00:45:48honestly,
00:45:49it was a little touch and go
00:45:50whether he would even play defense today.
00:45:52So,
00:45:53it's getting better
00:45:54and with these,
00:45:55with the 10 days off before the next game,
00:45:56he should be completely healthy.
00:45:58That's the clock for Kansas City.
00:46:00The incomplete pass
00:46:01for Ben Williams
00:46:02to the 12-yard line
00:46:04and protecting the ball.
00:46:06I'm sure well instructed in that regard
00:46:09is a magnificent day
00:46:12for this Thanksgiving
00:46:13as Texas comes to an end.
00:46:16At the end of the first quarter,
00:46:18Michael Irving had what?
00:46:19How many catches?
00:46:20Michael Irvin.
00:46:21Irvin.
00:46:22We're in Irvin.
00:46:23Irvin had what?
00:46:249, 10, 9.
00:46:259 for 107 yards.
00:46:26And he still has what?
00:46:279 for 107 yards.
00:46:29He hadn't got a pass
00:46:31since the first quarter.
00:46:33I mean,
00:46:34that to me is incredible.
00:46:35They did a full day of work
00:46:36in the first quarter.
00:46:37That's why he has it.
00:46:38Big play for Kansas City.
00:46:40They give it to Williams
00:46:42on the reverse.
00:46:43Kevin Williams
00:46:44on the number 19.
00:46:46First down.
00:46:48Well, they used that play
00:46:49and have since Jimmy Johnson
00:46:52drafted Kevin Williams
00:46:53and it seems to always
00:46:54give you a positive yard.
00:46:56Well, it was a good job
00:46:57of the Dallas offense
00:46:59faking like they're going to go left
00:47:01and here comes Williams
00:47:02around the right side.
00:47:03The Kansas City defense
00:47:04overreacts,
00:47:05going the wrong way.
00:47:06That's why he's able
00:47:07to pick up the first down easily.
00:47:09Boy, big old Nate Newton
00:47:11out there.
00:47:12He just,
00:47:13he just blocked out
00:47:14the light pole on the roof there
00:47:16so that they couldn't see
00:47:17who had the ball.
00:47:19He brought that
00:47:20back up daylight.
00:47:21That goat is going to taste good
00:47:22tonight for Ole Miss.
00:47:28Irvin, there's a catch for him,
00:47:29but it's only good for two yards
00:47:31after the 21.
00:47:32George Jamison, the tackler.
00:47:37Well, that offensive line,
00:47:38we had our experts
00:47:40call the turkey people
00:47:41and said that the average,
00:47:43if you're going to cook a turkey,
00:47:44you want to figure
00:47:45each person's going to eat,
00:47:46is going to eat about
00:47:47a pound and a half.
00:47:49So if you have four people eating,
00:47:51you want at least
00:47:52a six-pound bird, right?
00:47:54Well, what if you have two in A?
00:47:56And what if you invite
00:47:57old Nate in there to eat?
00:47:59And how about Donaldson?
00:48:02And even a substitute canard.
00:48:04We'll get back to it.
00:48:05Don't gobble it up yet.
00:48:07We've got Sherman Williams
00:48:09battling his way to a first down,
00:48:11up with a 32.
00:48:14And Neil Smith.
00:48:16And Kevin Williams,
00:48:18a little push,
00:48:1910 yards on the run
00:48:20and a first down.
00:48:23Let's see, those guys still eating?
00:48:25Is that offensive line?
00:48:27Allen, he enjoys a good piece of turkey
00:48:30and so does Eric Williams.
00:48:32But if you're going to cook
00:48:33for those five guys,
00:48:34our experts say
00:48:35you better get two 20-pound turkeys.
00:48:39And no leftovers.
00:48:41You know what?
00:48:42They may be right.
00:48:44I might even work in his booth.
00:48:46Next down, that's Johnston.
00:48:50And he's straightened up
00:48:52from Davis and Nickel and others.
00:48:55Timeout called by Kansas City
00:48:58with 5.09 remaining in the fourth.
00:49:01And Marty Schottenheimer
00:49:02now has but one timeout left.
00:49:05It's 24-12.
00:49:07The Cowboys trying to hand Kansas City.
00:49:10So the Kansas City Chiefs
00:49:12who came here hoping
00:49:13to steal a win against
00:49:15the highly favored Dallas Cowboys.
00:49:19Fans with their signs.
00:49:22Kansas, oh,
00:49:23Santa's a Kansas City fan.
00:49:26Came from Pittsburgh.
00:49:30Second down.
00:49:35Irvin with a catch.
00:49:36Hit by Dale Carter.
00:49:38And Irvin, John Jackson,
00:49:40Carter and Irvin go at each other.
00:49:43I'll tell you,
00:49:44that was some kind of hit by Carter.
00:49:46And these guys, you know,
00:49:47Kansas City may be beaten
00:49:48in this ballgame,
00:49:49but they're still not,
00:49:50they're going to let some people
00:49:51know on the way out.
00:49:52Look at these guys.
00:49:53They're fighting all the way up the field.
00:49:55Carter staying with him.
00:49:56Irvin comes back.
00:49:57Irvin comes back.
00:49:58And Carter, bam, in the back.
00:50:00I mean, that's legal.
00:50:01There's nothing wrong with that.
00:50:03Good job of holding on that ball
00:50:04with two hands.
00:50:05You saw Mike Irvin also.
00:50:06An excellent throw by Troy Aikman,
00:50:08who was moving to his right
00:50:09and going towards the sideline.
00:50:10Able to get enough on the ball
00:50:11to get it down the field.
00:50:17He said he used to carry the ball
00:50:1820 times a game at Syracuse.
00:50:20So he said,
00:50:21I wasn't just a blocker.
00:50:22But of course,
00:50:23he's filled that role
00:50:24so magnificently
00:50:25that the whole league
00:50:26has recognized him
00:50:27in two straight Pro Bowl appearances.
00:50:29Well, he didn't have Emmitt Smith
00:50:30in the backfield with him
00:50:31at Syracuse either.
00:50:32So that's one of the reasons
00:50:33why he's not getting it down here.
00:50:35He's from Youngstown, New York,
00:50:37which is right outside of Buffalo.
00:50:38Not Youngstown, Ohio,
00:50:39but Youngstown, New York.
00:50:40That's a little,
00:50:41about 2,500 or so, right?
00:50:42Yeah, a little town
00:50:43outside of Buffalo.
00:50:44But I'll tell you the one thing
00:50:45about this guy,
00:50:46when we talked to him yesterday,
00:50:47the nice thing about him is
00:50:48that of all the guys we talked to
00:50:49during the course of the year,
00:50:50there are role players.
00:50:51He knows his role.
00:50:52He's accepted it
00:50:53from the day he came here.
00:50:54He knows that he's a blocker
00:50:56runner second,
00:50:57and maybe catch a ball
00:50:58once in a while.
00:50:59But this guy
00:51:00is a complete football player.
00:51:02Complimentary players,
00:51:04what coaches call them.
00:51:05They do indeed compliment.
00:51:07NBC's Thanksgiving holiday extra.
00:51:09He just ate it.
00:51:11Said he might have one drumstick,
00:51:12but if he has it,
00:51:13he wants it all the way down
00:51:14including the thigh.
00:51:16And some French fries.
00:51:20Across the wing.
00:51:22Young legs.
00:51:24Down the 33-yard line.
00:51:27Well, this is what is so impressive
00:51:29about the Dallas Cowboy offense.
00:51:31Here it is late in the game.
00:51:32They're trying to eat up some talk.
00:51:34This is the straight,
00:51:35fourth straight first down
00:51:36they've gotten.
00:51:37You know they're going to run
00:51:38the football,
00:51:39and look at the hole.
00:51:40The offensive line opens up.
00:51:42Williams, nobody really
00:51:43to avoid there right there.
00:51:45And finally,
00:51:46the safety.
00:51:47William White comes over
00:51:48to make the play.
00:51:49This got Williams
00:51:50from scoring a touchdown.
00:51:51Now, Williams is averaging
00:51:52five yards a carry.
00:51:53His little reserve work
00:51:54for Emmitt Smith
00:51:55at 161 yards.
00:51:57Coming in,
00:51:58he's five for 41
00:51:59over an eight-yard average today.
00:52:01He does paint a nice picture
00:52:03in that open field.
00:52:11Dick, let's go back
00:52:12to the three things I said.
00:52:13Who was the most important?
00:52:14Was it Aikman,
00:52:15was it Emmitt,
00:52:16or was it Urban?
00:52:17Now, it's the offensive line.
00:52:19I'm going to tell you what.
00:52:20Take all those other ingredients out.
00:52:21Look at these guys.
00:52:22And then we go back
00:52:23to what Marty Schottenhammer told us.
00:52:24We may have the best 46 players
00:52:26better than this team here.
00:52:27Well, I'll tell you what.
00:52:28Their 22, as he said,
00:52:31are probably better than ours.
00:52:32They're starters,
00:52:33and I think they're showing that.
00:52:34Well, you got to remember
00:52:35the Cowboys,
00:52:36now they have about eight players
00:52:37that do 95% of the work.
00:52:38So that 46,
00:52:40it's hard for you
00:52:41to make analogies sometimes
00:52:43about your whole team
00:52:44because so few really figure in
00:52:45to making those big plays.
00:52:47About three minutes to go.
00:52:48They give to Williams,
00:52:49and no hole that time.
00:52:52Stuffed by Dan Selley-Lewis.
00:52:54You know, we should mention,
00:52:55and Phil, you were talking about,
00:52:57the league,
00:52:58as they have Urban and Carter,
00:53:03probably this is a rebound,
00:53:05an echo, if you will,
00:53:06from their confrontation
00:53:08on the sidelines.
00:53:11One of the officials
00:53:12wants somebody thrown
00:53:13out of the ball game.
00:53:14Now, Carter was being held
00:53:16by the official,
00:53:17and then he's pushing the official.
00:53:18That's something you just don't do.
00:53:20These two guys are going at it.
00:53:22They're swinging.
00:53:23Now, look and see
00:53:24when they grab each other's face,
00:53:25man.
00:53:27Number 34,
00:53:30for kicking,
00:53:31after the play,
00:53:32after this furnace has broken up,
00:53:34he's ejected.
00:53:36They got him for the kick,
00:53:38and all of that didn't count,
00:53:40but the kick did.
00:53:41All right, 34 is Carter, folks.
00:53:43Here's the kick underneath.
00:53:44Yeah, ha, ha.
00:53:45That's an old karate move.
00:53:46But, you know...
00:53:47Oh, another kick.
00:53:48There was a double kick.
00:53:49There's a double kick.
00:53:50And that's when
00:53:51they threw the flag.
00:53:52But all the face mask stuff
00:53:53didn't mean anything, Dick.
00:53:54Oh.
00:53:56The field judge throws it.
00:53:59Reflecting, perhaps,
00:54:00the frustration
00:54:01of this Kansas City team.
00:54:03They came in
00:54:04on an emotional high,
00:54:05best record in the NFL,
00:54:07chance to prove itself
00:54:08in Dallas.
00:54:11And it's come up empty for them.
00:54:12I have to wonder
00:54:13if some of that
00:54:14by Michael Irving
00:54:15going after these defensive backs,
00:54:16are they retaliating
00:54:18for Deion Sanders,
00:54:19the way the Kansas City receivers
00:54:21went after him early in the game,
00:54:22going low,
00:54:23trying to cut him.
00:54:25Well, and, uh,
00:54:26Irving, you can see him
00:54:27intimidating off the line
00:54:28of scrimmage.
00:54:29He headbutted Carter
00:54:30a couple of times to start it.
00:54:31And, uh,
00:54:32he taunted him
00:54:33after that play
00:54:34on the sidelines.
00:54:35And, uh,
00:54:36the younger player, Carter,
00:54:37was baited, perhaps.
00:54:39And isn't it
00:54:40almost every time,
00:54:41Dick,
00:54:42the second guy gets caught?
00:54:43I mean, you just...
00:54:44They don't see the first hit,
00:54:45the one that antagonizes
00:54:46the player.
00:54:47Then the second one...
00:54:48Well, when you throw a kick
00:54:49like he did in there,
00:54:50that's, uh...
00:54:51You gotta go.
00:54:52You gotta go.
00:54:53That's right.
00:54:54He's red-barred.
00:54:55He's lipsy.
00:54:56He's hitting Carter.
00:54:57But you cost us a first down.
00:54:58Well, and he's coaching
00:54:59for the next game.
00:55:00You can't let your quarterback
00:55:01hurt your team.
00:55:02229.
00:55:04Williams hitting the backfield.
00:55:06Still on his feet.
00:55:08And then, uh...
00:55:09Well, part of the frustration
00:55:11for Carter,
00:55:12Irving,
00:55:1311 catches,
00:55:14121 yards,
00:55:15and a touchdown early.
00:55:16We approach the two-minute
00:55:18timeout.
00:55:19The Chiefs have no more
00:55:21timeouts.
00:55:27Well, the pain
00:55:28on the face of Dale Carter.
00:55:30His Thanksgiving Day
00:55:32is...
00:55:33to me.
00:55:38AT&T presents
00:55:39A Sure Thing.
00:55:40Or is it?
00:55:41They win it!
00:55:42Incredible!
00:55:43On the opening kickoff,
00:55:45On the opening kickoff
00:55:46of Super Bowl XXV,
00:55:47the Bills' Don Smith
00:55:48had a clear lane
00:55:49to the end zone
00:55:50for a sure touchdown.
00:55:51But how sure was it?
00:55:53In business,
00:55:54you can't always count
00:55:55on having enough time.
00:56:00But you can count

00:56:17These days,
00:56:18you can't count on much.
00:56:19But you can count
00:56:20on AT&T
00:56:21for the life
00:56:22of your business.
00:56:23Smith's clear path
00:56:24to touchdown glory
00:56:25hit a detour
00:56:26when giant kicker
00:56:27Matt Barr
00:56:28wrestled him to the turf.
00:56:32Matt Barr,
00:56:33the littlest giant,
00:56:34proved that in the NFL,
00:56:36there's no such thing
00:56:37as a sure thing.
00:56:39Hey, Samson.
00:56:40Where do I begin?
00:56:42Friday, Sears is open early
00:56:43for three hours of savings.
00:56:45Like 50% off this

00:56:47or 22-piece socket set.
00:56:49Come see
00:56:50the merry sight
00:56:52of Sears.

00:56:57cup-shaped brush head
00:56:58that removes plaque

00:57:01leaving your teeth
00:57:02so clean
00:57:03you can feel it.
00:57:04The Braun Oral-B
00:57:05Plaque Remover
00:57:06cleans better
00:57:07than a manual toothbrush.
00:57:09Saturday at 2 Eastern
00:57:10on NBC,
00:57:11a New Orleans tradition
00:57:12like no other.
00:57:14Living legend
00:57:15Eddie Robinson
00:57:16leads his Grambling State Tigers
00:57:17against the Jaguars
00:57:18of Southern University.
00:57:20Plus,
00:57:21the spectacular Battle
00:57:22of the Bands at halftime.
00:57:23The Bayou Classic,
00:57:25Saturday on NBC.
00:57:31What a beautiful look
00:57:32at downtown Dallas
00:57:33from the MetLife
00:57:34Blimp Snoopy 1.
00:57:35Thanks for providing
00:57:36the coverage
00:57:37of today's game
00:57:38from Texas Stadium.
00:57:39The MetLife Blimp,
00:57:40much like us
00:57:41at NBC Sports,
00:57:42does not require
00:57:43a home base.
00:57:44Constantly on the road,
00:57:46walking over 60,000
00:57:47miles a year.
00:57:50Sherman Williams.
00:57:53And pushed out of bounds
00:57:54at the 13.
00:57:56Well, it looked like
00:57:57offside by Kansas City,
00:57:58but the flags were
00:57:59just a tad late.
00:58:00You know, I love
00:58:01this time of the year, Dick.
00:58:02I'm telling you.
00:58:03Right after Thanksgiving,
00:58:04they start rooting
00:58:05for Santa Claus.
00:58:06I love that guy.
00:58:07Offside.
00:58:09Number 97 of the defense.
00:58:11Five yards.
00:58:12And that's for a second down.
00:58:13Hattrick for Sally Amoah.
00:58:16Third offside.
00:58:17There he is.
00:58:18There's your man, Paul.
00:58:19He's got his eye
00:58:20on you, too, Paul.
00:58:21Which, I get it.
00:58:22I bring this up
00:58:23because, you know,
00:58:24your son keeps looking
00:58:25up the chimney.
00:58:26My seven-year-old,
00:58:27I catch him about
00:58:28twice a week
00:58:29looking up the chimney.
00:58:30Got a quizzical look.
00:58:31I said,
00:58:32you've just got to figure out
00:58:33that's why he's Santa.
00:58:34Who else could?
00:58:35The big question is,
00:58:36Paul, were you
00:58:37a good boy this year?
00:58:38Are you going to get
00:58:39something good?
00:58:40Yes, yes, yes.
00:58:41Oh, yeah.
00:58:42I want a tricycle.
00:58:43So heavy-duty wheels.
00:58:47Williams.
00:58:49Darts for the
00:58:50three.
00:58:51Makes the tackle.
00:58:53Well, Lamar Hunt,
00:58:54who lives here in Dallas,
00:58:56the founders of the
00:58:57American Football League,
00:58:58thought he'd be an NFL owner
00:59:00and going to Minnesota.
00:59:01He had the Dallas Texans
00:59:02for three years
00:59:03and then they became
00:59:04the Kansas City Chiefs,
00:59:06one of the most respected
00:59:07men in football.
00:59:08At this point in time,
00:59:10his hometown,
00:59:11a chance for him
00:59:12to really show
00:59:13that the AFC had
00:59:14a powerhouse team,
00:59:15a team 10-1,
00:59:17that was not deserving
00:59:18of being, what,
00:59:1911-point underdog,
00:59:20whatever it was.
00:59:21They trailed by 12.
00:59:2633,
00:59:27on their way
00:59:28to stop the clock.
00:59:29Williams,
00:59:30pinned at the 6'9",
00:59:32by Tracy Rogers.
00:59:34Well, this really
00:59:35has been an important game
00:59:36for the Oakland Raiders
00:59:37to watch.
00:59:38The Raiders also
00:59:39defeated by Dallas.
00:59:41They have Kansas City
00:59:42and we're presuming
00:59:43they're going to lose 10-3
00:59:44as the Raiders
00:59:45beat San Diego.
00:59:46It's the Raiders
00:59:47and Kansas City
00:59:48a week from Sunday.
00:59:49That's right,
00:59:50and we'll be out there
00:59:51to watch that game
00:59:52and I think a big question
00:59:53is it looks like Jeff Hostetler
00:59:54is not going to play
00:59:55Monday night
00:59:56against the San Diego Chargers,
00:59:57so...
00:59:59Oh!
01:00:01It gives them a chance
01:00:02the following week
01:00:03to come in and play
01:00:04for the division tie
01:00:06for the Kansas City Chiefs.
01:00:08Fourth down,
01:00:09clock running,
01:00:12Williams
01:00:13to the 6-yard line.
01:00:14That won't be enough
01:00:15and the clock stopped
01:00:16on the change of possession.
01:00:18Kansas City
01:00:19with 26 seconds
01:00:21gets it back
01:00:22at the 6-yard line.
01:00:23Maybe a little point,
01:00:24but I'll tell you right now,
01:00:25I like the fact that
01:00:26the Dallas Cowboys
01:00:27are up by 12 points.
01:00:28There's no sense
01:00:29in kicking a field goal
01:00:30and burying this team.
01:00:31They went for it on fourth down,
01:00:32got the clock running,
01:00:33maybe took off
01:00:34four or five seconds.
01:00:35Here's Kansas City,
01:00:36no timeouts,
01:00:3726...
01:00:3824 to 12,
01:00:3926 seconds to go
01:00:40and they've got
01:00:4194 yards to go.
01:00:42Nothing happened.
01:00:43And also,
01:00:44don't take the chance
01:00:45of getting it blocked
01:00:46and running back
01:00:47for a touchdown
01:00:48and giving the team
01:00:49one little opportunity
01:00:50there is.
01:00:51But the victory
