00:00 Hello and welcome to the latest TV news. I'm Sam Wharton and today I'm going to be speaking
00:22 to a fellow Sussex World reporter, Henry Bryant, about how Brighton and Hove Albion stars got
00:27 on during the international break. We will also be previewing the Seagulls trips to Liverpool
00:32 and Brentford in the Premier League during the Goldmouth Action podcast.
00:36 First, here are the top stories from across the county.
00:40 Pizza chain Papa John's has announced it is closing a number of branches in East Sussex.
00:44 The company is shutting a total of 43 underperforming restaurants across the UK by mid-May following
00:51 a consultation process with impacted staff. The branches in East Sussex that will be closing
00:56 are Bexhill, Eastbourne, Hailsham and Peacehaven. The restaurants in Brighton and Hove will
01:01 remain open. The company added that it remained committed to driving growth in the UK and
01:06 improving results over the long term. Meanwhile, a new rooftop garden and restaurant
01:12 will be on the way at a hotel in Eastbourne after a planning application was approved.
01:17 Plans now approved will see an extension to the new Wilmington Hotel on Compton Street
01:21 to provide a fifth storey. The extension will also provide the hotel with an additional
01:26 12 rooms. The rooftop terrace as part of the submission will provide 150 seats for a dining
01:32 guest and would also be enclosed by a glazed screen and would have a retractable shade
01:37 comprising steel posts and horizontal supports. The plans state that the extension will provide
01:42 seven extra full-time jobs following the expansion of the hotel and restaurant facilities.
01:49 Bus services to Devils Dyke and Ditchling Beacon have been given a one-year reprieve
01:53 after they were threatened by subsidy costs when the council set its budget last month.
01:57 The stay of execution comes after the government gave the council permission to use funding
02:02 intended for the council's bus service improvement plan. Funds allocated to the plan, drawn up
02:07 by councils up and down the country, are generally required to be spent on improving journey
02:11 times, reliability, passenger growth and customer satisfaction. But the Department for Transport
02:17 said that the council could use this government grant to help revive the routes as bus services
02:21 continue to recover from the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.
02:25 A new Netflix sci-fi series has brought an iconic Sussex location to the small screen.
02:31 Episode 5 of Free Body Problem, a show by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and Alexander
02:36 Wu was partially filmed at Cookmere Haven Beach near the Seven Sisters Cliffs, according
02:41 to an article on Atlasofwonders.com. The article said "This scenic coastal area renowned for
02:46 the stunning natural beauty of the Chalk Cliffs is nestled within the South Downs National
02:50 Park. The house that Will rents by the seaside is actually a pottery shop called the Pilgrim
02:55 Potter." The Netflix show stars Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chow, Liam Cunningham,
03:01 Benedict Wong, Jonathan Price and others.
03:04 A long-delayed road building project is to receive £2.5m from the government to help
03:10 in its completion. The Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities said it has allocated
03:15 the money towards completing the Queensway Gateway Road which is said will help to unlock
03:19 jobs, reduce congestion and ensure improved connectivity in the Bexhill-Hastings Growth
03:24 Corridor. The government made the announcement on Monday and the money is part of a total
03:28 of £40m for East Sussex from the DLUHC.
03:33 Stay tuned as after the break we will be discussing all things Brighton and Hove Albion.
03:37 Henry, thank you for joining us. The international break came at a good time for Brighton after
03:41 a mixed run of results but how do they stand now and are there any injuries to report ahead
03:46 of the games against Liverpool and Brentford?
03:47 Well in terms of injuries there's nothing to report on which is quite a surprise and
03:52 a relief for Albion fans as we've had a long list of injuries and we're definitely in the
03:58 statistics for the top five clubs in the Premier League with the most injured players in the
04:04 biggest injury list. So it's a relief to see that for those final ten games of the season
04:08 Brighton and Hove Albion will have a somewhat decent chance of keeping all the players they
04:14 have right now and they won't be getting any injuries from the international break.
04:19 So Henry we've got to talk about Louis Dunne who started England's 2-2 draw with Belgium
04:22 at Wembley on Tuesday evening after coming on as a substitute against Brazil at the weekend.
04:27 It was a big opportunity for the Albion captain to impress but unfortunately was at fault
04:31 for goals in both games. His loose header straight to a yellow shirt on Saturday was
04:34 punished and he was again given a torrid time by Roma's Romelu Lukaku on Tuesday as his
04:40 mistake allowed the striker to provide the perfect cross for Uri Tieleman to head into
04:45 the far post to give Belgium the lead. So Henry has Dunne fluffed his Euros chance after
04:50 that performance, do you think it's probably unlikely now that he's going to be in Gareth
04:52 Southgate's squad?
04:53 It's a difficult one because Gareth Southgate was saying at the start of these friendlies
04:59 that England are suffering with a lot of injuries and it's almost a difficult situation with
05:05 the England squad because of the amount of injuries they do face. So Dunne was given
05:09 that chance to appear as a substitute and start one of the games. So I feel like in
05:16 terms of how he performs as a neutral it looks like maybe he has fluffed his lines there.
05:22 There was a lot of unforced errors you have to say, especially as you mentioned with the
05:27 Brazil goal and with Romelu Lukaku in the Belgium game. He just looked silly, he almost
05:34 looked like he was scrambling for the ball, used the wrong foot to try and get the ball
05:39 out of possession and Lukaku took advantage of that and was able to cross in a lovely
05:45 ball for Tieleman. So I think that a lot of work is going to be needed for Louis Dunne,
05:53 maybe for him to perform really well in these last 10 games for the Albion to stand a chance
05:58 of getting on that flight and representing England in the Euros.
06:02 How did Brighton's other stars get on? So we'll start with Evan Ferguson, he started
06:07 both of the Republic of Ireland games against Belgium and Switzerland. The out-of-form strike
06:11 missed a penalty on Saturday and he also missed a great chance on Tuesday. Is his form a concern
06:17 or is it one of those things where if he gets one goal then the floodgates will open?
06:21 I think Brighton fans were so excited when he burst onto the scene this season with a
06:28 few great goals and able to do the business. For example, at Newcastle at home he was really
06:33 able to shine and score a couple of really important goals for us that killed that game
06:38 off and it looked like we had another £100 million player. Is that the case still? I
06:43 still think that is the case, yes, but I think that his form has been dwindling a little
06:49 bit and we need players like him to step up with the likes of Joao Pedro that have been
06:54 injured and it's time for him to knock on the door and get some more goals really, especially
07:01 for Brighton. It's a shame that he wasn't able to capitalise on his opportunity to score
07:07 for his country. I think time will tell whether he lives up to that expectation because it's
07:14 not just the hype of fans, it's the hype of the media and it's the hype of all of these
07:19 players around you expecting him to perform. He's still a very young man and I'm hoping
07:25 that he'll be able to bounce back.
07:27 So we move on to Simon Odinga who came on as a substitute to provide the assist for
07:31 the winning goal in a fine 2-1 win for the Ivory Coast over Uruguay on Tuesday night.
07:35 It was a corner for the assist and we saw that as well in the Africa Cup of Nations.
07:39 So maybe Henry do you think you should be taking the corners for Brighton and how encouraging
07:42 is Odinga's form?
07:43 It's so encouraging to see because we really need that at the moment with the amount of
07:48 injuries we have and also players like we mentioned like Evan Ferguson, Lewis Dunn haven't
07:52 been in the finest of form and we really need them to be. And showing that in international
07:57 friendly games and international fixtures. So for Odinga to be doing the business like
08:03 that is really positive to see from a Brighton perspective and I think that yes he should
08:10 be taking the corners in future because he's also quite a small statured player, he's a
08:14 tricky winger but if he's able to get the right crosses in I think that he would be
08:20 a good asset to have as a corner taker.
08:23 We've also got Pascal Gros that takes a fair few of the Brighton-Hove Albion corners and
08:28 he's been doing well recently and also came on off the bench for Germany recently in a
08:34 game so he's got a lot of competition if he does want to fill the boots as a full-time
08:39 corner taker but there's no reason he can't be able to do that given the accolades of
08:45 winning the AFCON with a corner assisted by him so we'll see.
08:51 I just also wanted to ask about Bart Verbruggen who started in the 2-1 defeat for the Netherlands
08:55 against Germany. There's been lots of praise for his performance and so should he really
08:59 be starting over Jason Steele regularly for Brighton?
09:02 I think Verbruggen has gained a lot of confidence in recent games, something that he didn't
09:07 have at the start of the season when he played for Brighton. He was slightly shaky at the
09:10 back and it was clear that he hadn't fully mastered the De Zerbi style of football from
09:15 playing it from the back that we see with the Albion teams these days. I think that
09:20 Jason Steele was a good servant to the club in being able to provide that for Roberto
09:26 De Zerbi. He's not the best shot-stopper in the world but he was able to be solid at times
09:31 when we needed him so I think that now that Verbruggen is gaining that confidence I think
09:36 it's now time for him to gain that first-team spot for regular starts.
09:41 How would you sum up the international break as a whole as Brighton now get back to action
09:45 in the Premier League?
09:46 Well I think that it was successful in some ways for some of the clubs and unsuccessful
09:52 for others. I think that the way to see it now is to regain confidence with the likes
09:58 of Lewis Dunk not performing at his best. I feel like for Bart Verbruggen he should
10:05 now be starting every single game and these final ten games can be absolutely massive
10:10 for us. I think that in terms of the way that Brighton have been able to represent themselves
10:14 in the international friendlies and international games it's important for us now to regroup
10:20 as a team and show our quality on the pitch because really it's a maple break right now.
10:26 I was speaking to a few fans the other day and they were saying we really don't want
10:29 Brighton to fail and have a bit of a whimper at the end of the season because we're basically
10:35 out of everything now and we need to gain our European status for that second season.
10:41 That will be the big turning point for the Albion this season and I think that will be
10:46 a big push for us going forward into the next season.

11:13 Pole and this week I'm joined by Brighton, Hove, Albion writer Darren Howard, Crawley
11:17 Town expert Mark Dunford and Sam Morton who covers both the Seagulls and the Reds.
11:21 Finally, what seems like eternity, Albion will return to action this weekend after an
11:25 enforced two week break. We'll preview Brighton's upcoming pair of Premier League fixtures this
11:30 week plus we'll take a look back at a fantastic win for Crawley Town that moved them into
11:34 the League 2 playoffs. You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and
11:38 pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk/sport and you can check out other great videos on
11:43 shotstv.com and freeview channel 276.
11:46 You may also be watching on latest TV so thank you very much for tuning in but first we will
11:50 start with Brighton captain Lewis Dunk who started in England's 2-2 draw with Belgium
11:55 at Wembley on Tuesday evening. The defender once again was given a torrid time by Roma's
12:00 Romelu Lukaku as his mistake allowed the striker to provide the perfect cross for Yuri Tielemans
12:05 heading at the far post to give Belgium the lead. It was a bit of a rough old night for
12:09 Lewis Dunk, wasn't it Darren? Has he fluffed his Euro chances after that performance do
12:15 you think?
12:16 I hope not. I hope it doesn't stand against him. It may well. Southgate has in the past
12:24 stood by the likes of Harry Maguire when he has made mistakes in similar positions on
12:31 the pitch. It would be interesting to see if he offers Lewis Dunk that same leeway.
12:37 Obviously Maguire has been to tournaments in the past and has played really well at
12:41 major tournaments. So how that will impact Dunk going forward I think it's really going
12:46 to depend on the next 10 games of Premier League matches that are going to take place.
12:51 Brighton have got 10 more games left of the Premier League season. How he performs in
12:56 those is going to have a huge impact on whether he does go to the Euros or not as a squad
13:03 or as a starter. I think it will make an impact. It came so quickly after his mistake for Brighton
13:11 against Roma as well. He was in a similar area of the pitch. Romelu Lukaku was chasing
13:15 him down again. He wasn't outpaced. Sometimes Dunk is criticised for a bit of a lack of
13:19 pace. He was actually in the right position on the pitch but he just got his footing wrong.
13:25 Went with the wrong foot. Couldn't clear the ball. Lukaku again was on to him. Whether
13:30 he had a flashback to that Roma moment last night when that was happening and he lost
13:35 his concentration I really don't know. I was gutted for him actually because he's played
13:41 so well the last couple of years. So consistent, so good. On the two biggest games of his career
13:48 perhaps Roma and then this match against England. I know it's a friendly but it was to really
13:53 cement his place. He's made those two big errors. Real shame for Dunk. I hope Southgate
13:59 stands by him.
14:00 It must be something about Belgium and Brighton players Sam. A Brighton player also had a
14:05 bit of a nightmare against Belgium on Saturday didn't they?
14:09 Evan Ferguson, yes. He missed a penalty in a 0-0 draw on Saturday. That's a real shame
14:16 obviously for him not to be able to end that goal scoring drought that he's on. It's a
14:22 strange one because obviously at the start of the season he couldn't stop scoring. He
14:27 was scoring hat-tricks against Newcastle and he just felt like he was Brighton's next £100
14:32 million player. I'm not sure what's happened but he seems to have just lost that confidence
14:37 in front of goal. I have noticed it with Brighton that he's really not been himself. He's not
14:44 been bad in the sense that he's able to pick the ball up in good positions and hold the
14:47 ball up and play other people in. It's just in front of goal he's really struggling. It
14:52 could be one of those things really where if he gets one the floodgates could open and
14:56 just get that confidence back. It's a shame he couldn't have done that for the Republic
15:01 of Ireland and then come back to Brighton and have that goal scoring touch back again.
15:05 They really need him, especially with Rijal Pedro still out. It was a shame he didn't
15:11 find his goal scoring touch a bit early when Pedro was out so they wouldn't have missed
15:14 him as much maybe. But he's still very young so I wouldn't say it's a huge concern at the
15:19 moment. I think he just needs to go back to what he was doing so well before. It's all
15:24 about confidence in football at the end of the day. I really do feel like if he gets
15:28 a couple then we'll all be laughing and he'll go back to the form he was in before.
15:33 Can we talk about Belgium's kit quickly? I love Belgium's kit. It's great isn't it? Did
15:39 it look a bit odd last night? England playing Belgium and the two coloured kits they were
15:44 wearing. It didn't look like an England vs Belgium game did it? But Belgium's kit was
15:48 fantastic. If you didn't see it, it was basically Tintin and I absolutely loved it.
15:54 I really liked the England kit as well actually. It was really smart.
15:58 It was really smart. Yes. Where did they hide the cross on that kit? I don't know.
16:06 I think that's probably for a podcast done by GB News I think if you want to get some
16:12 George's cross. Anyway, moving back to matters on the pitch.
16:15 The Dutch is the best cross of the night.
16:17 Yeah, that was a good cross wasn't it?
16:20 Yes, going back to matters. Airs has mentioned that Albion are back in action after a four
16:26 night off. It's not an easy return for them as they travel to Tull, chasing Liverpool
16:31 on Easter Sunday. How do you see this one going Sam? They couldn't have asked for a
16:35 harder fixture really could they?
16:37 No. I think it pretty much is. Obviously going to the Etihad or Anfield or the Emirates were
16:44 probably the worst places to go and they managed to get Anfield to come back to. But you never
16:50 know with Brighton, do you? I think this could be a game where they'd turn up and win and
16:54 we'd be all very surprised because I'm not expecting them to, to be totally honest. I
16:59 think a draw would be a great result in the circumstances. Liverpool are starting to get
17:03 players back. It was incredible really with the amount of injuries and players unavailable
17:07 that Liverpool had that they still managed to keep their type of race going really. So
17:11 now they're starting to get these players back. Salah will probably be fully fit and
17:15 firing for the game. I think there's obviously been some concern about the form of Gakpo,
17:20 who hasn't really lit things up for Liverpool just yet. But there's so much talent in that
17:25 squad really. I think obviously it's going to be Alexis McAllister, who scored for Argentina
17:28 during the international break and he's in great form. So it's a really, really tough
17:34 game for Brighton to get back to. And you just really hope that after the international
17:38 break, they feel a little bit recharged. Obviously, in Lewis Duncan's case, can put his errors
17:43 behind him and can just really put in a good performance. You just hope that they can really
17:49 test Liverpool in the game. I'm not expecting too much. I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool
17:55 came out and won the game and kept their type of race going. But as long as Brighton go
18:00 toe-to-toe with them and don't crumble, that's all you can really ask for really in the situation
18:04 they're in.
18:05 One other cause for positivity, Jeremy, is the potential return of two key men for the
18:11 game at Anfield. Can you tell us a little bit about who could be returning for Brighton
18:14 and how big of a boost it will be for Roberto Di Serbi to have those two back?
18:19 Yeah, huge boost. Jael Pedro and James Milner, they've been missing for a large chunk of
18:25 the season now, both with thigh injuries. Di Serbi was saying before the international
18:32 break that he hopes to have them back for the Liverpool game. I think Jael Pedro, just
18:38 to feel, I think Jael Pedro has got more of a chance than James Milner. I think James
18:42 Milner, it might be a struggle for him to come back so quickly against Liverpool. But
18:47 I wouldn't be surprised if Jael Pedro makes an appearance. Whether that's from the start
18:52 or from the bench, I think he could be involved. But he's been really good for Brighton this
18:58 season. 19 goals since his £30m move from Watford and he's been a miss. So, for these
19:04 last ten games where they're going for Europe, hopefully he can get back to goal-scoring
19:09 form. And as Sam was saying, help the likes of Evan Ferguson, help the likes of Danny
19:14 Welbeck. And then James Milner, obviously he's great to add some experience to whether
19:21 he's playing at full-back, whether he's playing in midfield. So, his return will be very,
19:26 very handy for the last ten matches. And as well as Julio N'Ziso, he's now coming back
19:31 to form as well. Tarek Lamptey as well. Hopefully his fitness is going to improve. So, hopefully,
19:38 starting at Liverpool, there's going to be some good news on the injury front and a bit
19:44 better for the rest of the season.
19:45 Absolutely. And once Brighton have travelled to Liverpool, they'll then be hitting the
19:51 road to take on Brentford on Wednesday 3rd April. It's another tough away game, isn't
19:56 it, Sam? It's another one that you can't really call, I think. But how do you see this one
20:00 panning out?
20:01 Yeah, as you say, another really tough game, isn't it? I think Brentford are a bit of a
20:06 mixed bag this season. I think they've obviously had some poor results and some good ones as
20:12 well. So, a bit like Brighton, I guess. But obviously, Brentford, in comparison, are nowhere
20:17 near safe. They really are struggling in the sense, when you look at the table, they're
20:21 just five points clear of the relegation zone. So, they're going to be desperate to pull
20:26 away as quickly as they can. So, I think in that sense, it's going to be a really tough
20:31 game for Brighton to go to Brentford to a team that's obviously still looking over their
20:36 shoulder and have so much to play for. And obviously, Brighton do as well in getting
20:40 to Europe. They're not fighting for their lives like Brentford will be. And Ivan Toni
20:45 obviously is back and he played for England as well and got a goal for a penalty spot.
20:50 So, I'm sure he'll be confident and looking to follow that up in the game. So, a tough
20:55 one. I think then hopefully they get a decent result at Liverpool, get the confidence going.
21:00 And obviously, hopefully, Jal, Pedro, etc. are back and you never know. And I think Brighton
21:04 can hopefully follow that on and get a positive result at Brentford as well.
21:08 Haven't they got a really tough run in, Brian? Isn't it like statistically, they've got the
21:12 hardest run in out of everybody?
21:14 Yeah, they've got the hardest run in according to the stats. They've got Liverpool, Arsenal,
21:19 Manchester City, Man United and Chelsea all still to play this season.
21:23 Man United 3-0, surely.
21:24 Oh yeah, same with Chelsea. You would have thought.
21:29 And Newcastle and Aston Villa as well, all got to play this season. So, it's a really
21:32 tough, tough run in for Brighton. So, I think they've got to be looking at that game at
21:35 Brentford as one they've got to be winning, I think, to give themselves a little bit of
21:41 a buffer if they're going to try and get to the European places.
21:43 Absolutely. Well, best of luck to Brighton over the Easter weekend in the coming weeks.
21:48 Thank you very much, Sam and Darren. We're going to take a quick break. When we come
21:52 back, we'll be talking all things Crawley Town.
