00:08 - Welcome to the latest TV news.
00:34 My name is Sam Powell, and this week,
00:36 I'm gonna be speaking to sports reporter, Sam Morton,
00:38 about Brighton and Hove Albion's impressive results.
00:41 First in Europe against Marseille,
00:43 then in the league against Liverpool.
00:45 But first, here are the top stories from across the county.
00:49 Border patrol officers were seen detaining people
00:50 in East Sussex after a lifeboat brought people
00:53 to shore on Sunday.
00:55 New Haven's lifeboat was dispatched on Sunday afternoon
00:57 after reports of a small boat off the coast.
01:00 The Home Office did not comment on the incident,
01:02 but prepared a statement on incidents involving small boats.
01:05 The statement from January, 2023 said,
01:09 "The unacceptable number of people risking their lives
01:12 "is making these dangerous crossings
01:13 "is placing an unprecedented strain on our asylum system.
01:17 "Our priority is to stop the boats,
01:19 "and thanks to the work of the small boats
01:20 "operational command, alongside our French partner crossings
01:25 "are down by more than 20%
01:27 "compared to the same point last year."
01:30 A drug dealer who repeatedly supplied cocaine
01:32 in the Eastbourne area has been jailed for the third time.
01:36 Nigel Hollands was arrested in June, 2022
01:39 after messages consistent with the supply of Class A drugs
01:41 were found on another person's phone.
01:44 The messages came from Hollands' phone.
01:46 Officers stopped and searched him in Beach Road.
01:51 And they found him in possession of the phone in question,
01:53 and he was arrested and released under investigation
01:56 while inquiries were ongoing.
01:58 In July, 2023, Hollands was charged with being concerned
02:01 in the supply of cocaine
02:02 and acquiring, using, possessing criminal property.
02:06 Hollands, 37, of Cavendish Place, Eastbourne,
02:09 pleaded guilty to both offences
02:10 when he appeared at Lewis Crown Court on August 18th.
02:14 And on Friday, October 6th,
02:15 he was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.
02:18 And finally, Drusillus has become the second collection
02:23 in the UK to hold a rare remarkable species,
02:25 a pair of yellow-throated martens.
02:28 With just four of the species in the whole country,
02:30 the magnificent marten duo
02:31 make up half the British population of the animals.
02:34 Just 40 pairs of yellow-throated martens in Europe,
02:38 the zoo said it was overjoyed
02:39 to be able to give visitors the chance
02:41 to get nose-to-nose with the unique creatures.
02:44 The pair, named Nico and Sasha,
02:46 are settling very well, according to the zookeeper team.
02:49 The cute couple have been making themselves at home
02:51 in their brand new enclosure,
02:52 showing off their smarts by solving food puzzles,
02:55 exploring various enrichment toys on offer,
02:58 and eating their favourite gourmet snack, frog legs.
03:02 International best-selling crime and thriller author
03:08 and creator of the DS Roy Grace series, Peter James,
03:12 launched his 19th book of the Dead series,
03:15 titled "Stopped and Dead" on the 27th of September.
03:18 I had the pleasure of talking with James and his publisher
03:22 at the beautiful Brighton Palace Pier during the event.
03:24 I just saw you were outside with a dog.
03:26 Has it got anything to do with your book?
03:28 - It has indeed.
03:30 "Stopped and Dead" is about the huge nationwide trade
03:35 in dogs, black market trade in dogs,
03:38 that erupted during lockdown.
03:41 Everybody at the start of lockdown wanted a dog.
03:45 And I was reading a piece in the Argus
03:47 about a woman who was walking her dog
03:50 in the middle of Hove Park,
03:51 and she was mugged and the dog was stolen.
03:53 And I read that the dog was worth 5,000 pounds.
03:56 It was a breeding bitch Labrador.
03:58 And it's bad enough if you're mugged
04:00 and you have a watch or a purse stolen,
04:03 but at least you get over it and get the insurance.
04:05 And the dog, it's like having part of your soul ripped out.
04:09 And a dog is part of my life, part of our family.
04:12 And I had a meeting with Jo Shine,
04:13 the chief constable, just shortly afterwards.
04:16 And I said, "What was all that about?"
04:19 She said, "That was the tip of the iceberg."
04:20 She said, "Organised crime gangs realise
04:23 "the price of dogs has gone up 10 times
04:25 "since the beginning of lockdown.
04:27 "They can make more money out of the illegal trade
04:30 "in dogs than out of drugs.
04:32 "And if they get caught, they're looking at
04:34 "not even a custodial sentence
04:37 "unless they're very unlucky.
04:38 "Whereas the drugs, they're gonna get five to 15 years."
04:41 - So is this book is gonna sort of help people
04:44 to protect their dogs? - I hope so.
04:45 I've worked very closely with the RSPCA
04:47 in raising awareness.
04:49 And there's some of the tricks that the villains,
04:51 I mean, what they're doing is
04:51 they are firstly, literally stealing dogs.
04:55 Secondly, they are illegally importing dogs
04:59 from places like Romania,
05:00 where there's a high incidence of rabies
05:02 with fake vaccination certificates.
05:04 And thirdly, they're literally illegally breeding puppies
05:08 on these horrible puppy farms.
05:10 I should say that as a dog lover myself,
05:12 I have not depicted any dog being harmed.
05:15 I've depicted plenty of villains being harmed.
05:18 And I hope this does raise awareness.
05:21 And of the ways that the villains
05:24 are using to sell these dogs,
05:26 and they're very crafty.
05:27 One big way is they advertise in all the places
05:32 like Gumtree, Pets for Homes.
05:35 One of the tricks that they use is they'll rent an Airbnb.
05:39 And they'll advertise, "Nice looking puppy."
05:44 You think, "Oh, that's a cute little puppy.
05:47 "We'll go and take a look at that."
05:49 You turn up, it's a lovely house.
05:51 You don't realize it's Airbnb.
05:53 They force you to buy the puppy then and there,
05:55 rather than waiting the normal eight to 10 weeks.
05:58 You get it home, it's probably gonna get sick in a week.
06:00 You phone up, they've gone, vanished.
06:02 - You must probably have a dog.
06:03 - I have two dogs.
06:04 - Two dogs?
06:05 - Almost never in my life not had a dog.
06:07 - What are their names?
06:08 - Wally and Spooky.
06:09 My wife, Laura, always wanted to be able to
06:12 stand in the garden and shout, "Where's Wally?"
06:15 - Are they part of your books at all?
06:16 - They, every book I write, they kind of lie at my feet
06:21 and look at me and they say, "Come on, boss,
06:24 "it's time to go for a walk."
06:27 - So, Lucy, how many years have you been publishing, James?
06:30 - Well, Pam Macmillan have published
06:33 18 Grace novels, I think.
06:36 - 18?
06:36 - 18, or this is the 18th Grace novel.
06:39 - So, I know it sounds like a pun, but Dead actually sells.
06:42 - Dead sells very well, yes.
06:44 And we're looking forward.
06:45 We love the title of Stop Them Dead
06:47 and we're looking forward to
06:49 They Thought I Was Dead Next Spring.
06:51 - Okay.
06:52 - Which is Sandy's story.
06:53 - Wow, so we have a preview that nobody knows about.
06:56 - Absolutely, not announced yet.
06:58 - That's an exclusive latest TV.
07:00 - Oh, yes.
07:00 - You heard it from the horse.
07:02 So, what do you know about the book that he already,
07:05 you know, the one that he just published?
07:07 - Well, Stop Them Dead?
07:08 - Yes.
07:09 - Well, why Peter's so brilliant is
07:13 he writes fantastic crime plots,
07:15 but he also manages to pick on a very hot topic of the time.
07:20 And in this book, it's about the despicable trade in puppies
07:25 and dog, thief, and puppy farms.
07:28 And that's something that's,
07:30 anybody who knows Peter will know
07:31 that he's very passionate about animals
07:34 and it's something very close to his heart.
07:35 And it comes out in this book.
07:38 But it's also just a brilliantly exciting plot.
07:42 And it ends in a slurry pit.
07:45 That's all I'm gonna say.
07:46 - Ooh, well, I'm looking forward to read the book then.
07:50 And, so yeah, Peter actually told me
07:51 that he always had like a couple of dogs on his feet
07:54 when he writes.
07:55 I wonder if the font of inspiration
07:58 of most of his books comes from the love of dogs.
08:00 - Those dogs I happen to know are gorgeous and very gentle.
08:05 So I think, not the nasty crime side.
08:08 - Oh, fantastic.
08:09 Just wondering, how old can write a book a year, every year?
08:14 How can anyone be so productive?
08:16 - Because Peter just has inspiration.
08:18 Every, immediately he stops writing one book,
08:20 he starts another.
08:22 And he just picks topics that are very relevant.
08:26 And of course he has the great character
08:28 of Roy Grace to work with.
08:30 And he's fantastic, and now on television, of course.

08:41 - Did you know that just outside of Brighton,
08:44 in West Fairleigh, there's a place called Charleston?
08:47 The magnificent country house was the home
08:49 of Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf's sister, and Duncan Grant.
08:53 And become a gathering point for some

10:49 Welcome back to the Latest TV News.
11:03 Brian Ovalby and continue their impressive results
11:05 this season, with results in the Europa League
11:08 against Marseille, and away in the League at Liverpool,
11:11 both resulting in a draw.
11:12 I'm here with reporter Sam Morton.
11:14 How would you assess those performances so far?
11:17 It was excellent from Brighton in both those games, really.
11:19 I think against Marseille,
11:21 it was a really kind of tough situation.
11:23 The first time they've ever played in Europe,
11:25 away from home, and it was a really kind of intense
11:28 atmosphere in Marseille, which obviously knows all about
11:31 the Europa League, knows all about how to perform in Europe.
11:34 It's a really tough test, and it was a really difficult
11:37 first part of the game, really.
11:38 It was kind of a continuation of the Aston Villa game.
11:40 You could see nerves were there, and you could see
11:42 they weren't playing with their full confidence
11:44 that they had been in previous games in the season.
11:47 And they obviously fell two goals behind
11:49 really quickly in the game.
11:51 And you kind of feared the worst at that point.
11:52 You thought that it might be a repeat of the Aston Villa
11:55 drumming, really, and you kind of feared the worst
11:57 at that point, but they responded so well,
11:59 and they kind of got back to basics,
12:01 and they did what they do really well.
12:02 And they managed to come back and get a draw.
12:05 And it was the least they deserved, really,
12:06 and they could have had more.
12:07 There was a couple of chances at the end of the first half
12:09 when if they'd have got a goal back then rather than
12:11 after the break, it could have been a win.
12:14 So, really good result in the end for Brighton.
12:16 - Okay, well, we're joined by Ian Hart,
12:18 who's just at Marseille Airport at the moment,
12:21 following Brighton's 2-2 draw in the Europa League
12:24 Group B match.
12:25 It was an eventful game.
12:26 Brighton went 2-0 down after just 20 minutes.
12:29 Looked really shaky for a while, but the halftime break
12:32 seemed to revitalise them a bit, and they pulled a goal back
12:36 through Pascal Gros, and then a late penalty from
12:39 Gael Pedro made it 2-2 and kept Brighton's Europa League
12:44 dream alive, basically.
12:45 And Ian, you've been in Marseille.
12:49 You've had an eventful 48 hours, to say the least.
12:53 - Yes, indeed, yeah.
12:54 - How would you sum up your time?
12:56 - When you've been to Rochdale away on a Tuesday night,
13:00 this is a cakewalk, old son.
13:04 And the challenge is thrown at you.
13:07 I think you're so right.
13:09 It was a game of two halves.
13:12 We got delayed.
13:16 Tony Bloom was on our plane.
13:18 We got delayed, and quickly, before we talk about
13:21 the football, huge shout out to the club,
13:23 because they sent a bus for us,
13:26 and they got our tickets picked up.
13:28 We actually got in there after 38 minutes,
13:30 and Brighton started playing.
13:32 So they must have known that we'd turned up.
13:34 It was a three-hour delay with British Airways,
13:37 and we'll be looking into that,
13:40 'cause there's various issues.
13:43 Tony was superb.
13:44 Tony, I think you put it on your social media.
13:47 Deron, Tony got up and addressed the plane,
13:50 and put all our minds at rest.
13:54 And look, it was superb.
13:55 But on to the game, when we got there,
13:59 Brighton started playing at the end of the first half,
14:02 and probably had a chance with Danny Welbeck
14:05 that on another night might have gone in.
14:08 I think at two, one at halftime,
14:10 Brighton go on and win that game.
14:11 I mean, I'm still, as much as it's the experience,
14:16 and I'll take a point,
14:17 as a great save from the Marseille keeper from Matoma.
14:23 - Terrible save, second-half effort, yeah.
14:25 - Yeah, and the drinker had a chance.
14:28 Look, the group is still wide open,
14:31 and we've got two home games that we have to win.
14:33 I am, and I know Frankie has alluded to it,
14:38 the size of the squads and all these changes,
14:44 I think in some ways it can be counterproductive.
14:49 - It stops players from getting into a rhythm,
14:52 doesn't it, a bit.
14:53 But can you give us a flavour
14:54 of what the atmosphere was like there, Ian?
14:57 It looked pretty special on the TV last night,
15:00 but what was it like to be a fan at the Velodrome?
15:04 - Not you two youngsters, 'cause you're far too young,
15:06 right, but I went to the FA Cup final
15:08 when it meant something in 1983
15:10 against Manchester United, 100,000 people,
15:13 an electric atmosphere.
15:15 Two years later, I went to Celtic Rangers at Celtic Park,
15:19 and that was more than an atmosphere.
15:21 That was almost sinister.
15:24 That was fanaticism.
15:26 I have been to Brighton Palace games.
15:28 I've watched Brighton in 106 different stadiums
15:32 in competitive games.
15:33 I have never seen a set of fans like that last night.
15:37 And there is an argument that Brighton
15:40 might have been overawed by that atmosphere.
15:42 It was absolutely electric.
15:46 I mean, they've obviously got some fans
15:49 that have got a little bit of a reputation here,
15:54 but they are just relentless.
15:58 Watch out, Sussex, 'cause these boys,
16:02 if we thought Athens were fanatical,
16:04 we'd see nothing like these boys.
16:07 - And they, as you say, continued that again
16:09 against Liverpool at the weekend.
16:10 You kind of felt that they were back to their best,
16:12 definitely the best they've performed in quite a long time,
16:15 since the Man United game, you would say,
16:17 against Liverpool, and Liverpool really struggled
16:20 to deal with Brighton in that first 45 minutes,
16:22 but somehow managed to find themselves 2-1 at half-time
16:26 after two defensive errors from Brighton.
16:28 And that seems to be a recurring problem
16:30 for Albion this season, is the defensive side of things.
16:33 And they made a couple of silly errors
16:36 that proved costly, and Liverpool were ruthless
16:39 in taking advantage of that.
16:41 But again, they showed the character
16:43 and they managed to bounce back
16:44 and get a point in the second half.
16:46 So, kind of similar kind of results in a sense,
16:50 two good points, but two games they could have won
16:53 on another day.
16:54 - Absolutely.
16:55 Baleba and Igor both made their Premier League debuts
16:59 against Liverpool.
17:00 How did you rate their performances?
17:01 - I thought they were excellent, especially Baleba.
17:03 He was exceptional.
17:04 And as you say, his first start came on as a sub
17:07 against Bournemouth, and then started against Chelsea
17:09 in the Carabao Cups.
17:10 It was his first real chance to impress in the Premier League
17:13 and I thought he was excellent.
17:14 He kind of slotted into that midfield role
17:16 that Kaysedo kind of left behind really well,
17:19 really performed really well.
17:20 There's been kind of similarities to Ispessuma
17:22 in the way that he kind of starts attacks
17:24 and kind of has that presence on the ball.
17:26 And he could have even scored.
17:27 He had the chance where he just ran through the midfield.
17:29 No one picked him up and he had a shot just wide of the post
17:32 and it would have been just the cherry
17:33 on top of the cake, really.
17:34 He was excellent, really, really good performance.
17:37 And he was praised a lot by De Serby
17:40 at the end of the game in his press conference.
17:41 He was named as one of three players
17:43 that really impressed him.
17:44 And he said he's the perfect replacement for Kaysedo.
17:47 So, it's a big praise.
17:48 And the manager did also say that he thinks
17:50 he can be one of the most important players in Europe
17:53 in the near future.
17:54 And it's just another gem that Bryson have seemed
17:56 to have picked up from nowhere, almost.
17:59 It's incredible how they seem to do this.
18:01 And they're just taking their time with the players
18:02 and allowing them to gel and get used to the tactics
18:06 and the way that De Serby plays.
18:07 And obviously it's been difficult
18:08 with so many games this season
18:10 and not a lot of time for training.
18:11 So, it's even been more difficult
18:13 for these new players to gel
18:14 and they're doing really well so far.
18:16 And I wanted to mention Igor as well.
18:18 Slotted in really well.
18:19 I think he had a really tough game against Athens
18:21 in his debut in the Europa League
18:23 where he wasn't at his best.
18:24 But I think he's now starting to get used to the things
18:26 and he's slotted really well alongside Lewis Duncan
18:29 in that defence.
18:30 And I can't remember him making any errors at all.
18:32 So, he performed really well as well.
18:34 So, yeah, really impressed by both of those.
18:36 - It was Alexis McAllister's return
18:38 to the Amex Stadium as well.
18:39 How did he, what was his reception like, should I say,
18:43 with both the fans and the players as well?
18:45 - Yeah, no, really good reception for Alexis McAllister.
18:48 I think when his name was read out at the start of the game,
18:50 all the fans that were near me were applauding.
18:53 And that was really nice to see.
18:54 He was such an important player for Brighton
18:56 and obviously a massive part of their campaign
19:00 which got them into the Europa League.
19:02 So, definitely deserved of the praise
19:04 and the kind of reception he got
19:06 when he came back to the Amex on Sunday.
19:08 And it was really nice to see.
19:09 And at the end of the game as well,
19:10 I would have said he had his arm around him
19:12 and was trying to get the fans to applaud him even more.
19:14 And that was lovely as well.
19:15 And in the mix zone after the game,
19:17 De Serbi was a little bit late coming into his press conference.
19:20 But as he was walking in,
19:21 I saw McAllister just following behind him.
19:23 So, I think they'd just come out of a one-to-one chat,
19:25 which is also nice to see.
19:26 And they're obviously still really close.
19:28 And I think they appreciate each other really
19:30 for the impact they've had on their respective careers.
19:33 And I think, yeah, McAllister, he struggled in the game.
19:36 I think he was playing in a very defensive role
19:38 compared to what we saw in play for Brighton.
19:41 I think it was in the second half
19:42 that he was allowed to perform a little bit better
19:44 with more defensive protection behind him
19:47 in Gravenburch when he came on.
19:49 But yeah, he made quite a bad error in the first half
19:52 when he was intercepted by Dinger, who opened the scoring.
19:55 And he made a number of fouls
19:57 and he was surprised he wasn't booked in the game.
19:59 So, yeah, and I think he's made a decent start
20:01 to his career in Liverpool.
20:02 He's only gonna get better.
20:03 And it kind of felt like a proper goodbye
20:06 that he never really had for Brighton on Sunday,
20:08 which was good to see.
20:09 - Absolutely, and when Brighton return
20:11 from the international break,
20:12 they get their toughest test of the season,
20:14 they're away at City, the treble winners.
20:17 How do you think they're gonna fare against them?
20:20 - Tough game.
20:20 I think Man City are gonna be a wounded animal.
20:22 They've lost, obviously, against Arsenal in the league
20:24 and that's their second Premier League defeat in a row
20:27 after defeating us Wolves as well.
20:29 They also lost to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup
20:32 and they did obviously get that win against Leipzig
20:34 in the Champions League.
20:36 But I think Rodgerie not being there
20:38 has been massive for City.
20:40 They've really missed him
20:41 and they're still missing Kevin De Bruyne,
20:44 who I don't expect will be fit anytime soon.
20:46 But I think Rodgerie's due to be back
20:47 for the Brighton game, I think he is.
20:49 So that will be a massive boost for City.
20:51 And a bit of a shame that Brighton had to play
20:53 when he's back, really,
20:54 'cause he makes such a huge difference to that team.
20:57 But yeah, it'll be interesting to see how that game goes.
20:59 Brighton will have a little bit of confidence back.
21:01 Be interesting to see what players,
21:03 obviously, still fit after the international break.
21:04 It's obviously always a bit of a worry
21:06 when the players go off to play for their countries
21:08 or they're gonna stay fit
21:09 for the next round of Premier League games.
21:11 Hopefully everyone stays fit,
21:13 keep their confidence going from the Liverpool game,
21:15 and it should be a really good game
21:16 against a City side that's not firing all cylinders.
21:19 I think Erling Haaland's on a bit of a gold drought
21:21 for his standards.
21:22 So yeah, it'll be an interesting one.
21:24 I think both teams will be really looking to get a win.
21:28 I think both teams have gone a few Premier League games
21:31 without a win, so they'll be desperate
21:33 to get those three points.
