This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the week ahead 19/02/2024.

After a fine start the weather will turn wet again, especially midweek. By the end of the week it’ll be a little colder but temperatures will only return to around average rather than anything unusually cold.

Bringing you this forecast for the week ahead is Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin.

00:00 Welcome to your Outlook for the week ahead from the Met Office.
00:02 Temperatures will be dropping a little bit through this week.
00:06 The rain will be keeping on coming as well,
00:08 thanks to low pressure systems.
00:10 Bit of a ridge of high pressure brought many of us
00:12 a fine day on Monday.
00:14 That high tries to hold on in the south on Tuesday,
00:16 but then weather fronts open the door to more weather systems
00:20 barreling in from the Atlantic.
00:22 That'll bring some spells of rain,
00:24 and often the ice bars will be close together,
00:26 bringing some periods of gusty winds as well.
00:29 Why so?
00:30 Well, because as you can imagine with the bigger picture,
00:33 the jet stream is pretty active at the moment.
00:36 This lively jet stream, fast moving river of air
00:39 high up in the atmosphere that dictates our weather flavors.
00:42 It's shifted to the south at the moment,
00:44 pushing low pressure systems our way.
00:46 And if anything, later this week,
00:47 it dips even further down to the south,
00:50 and that is a breeding ground
00:52 for more areas of low pressure.
00:54 So yes, a pretty unsettled week of weather ahead.
00:57 But let's rewind the clock,
00:59 because at least on Tuesday,
01:00 high pressure hanging on in the south.
01:01 A dry day by and large over central and eastern England.
01:05 One or two showers for Wales perhaps early on.
01:07 But we do have this weather front drifting southwards.
01:10 That'll clear from Scotland and Northern Ireland
01:12 by the afternoon.
01:13 Showers will follow in behind,
01:15 and that rain will push into parts of northwest England
01:18 and west Wales by the end of the day.
01:20 It's getting quite breezy as well,
01:21 particularly so in the south,
01:22 but this is a cold front,
01:24 so ahead of it, we've still got the mild air in place.
01:27 Temperatures getting into the teens in places,
01:30 but starting at least to turn a little chillier
01:33 further north.
01:34 That process will continue later this week
01:37 as the first cold front pushes through.
01:39 And then a couple of weather systems we're watching.
01:41 This one in particular winding up
01:43 just as it approaches the UK.
01:46 Again, the ice bars squeegeeing together.
01:47 It's going to get windy,
01:48 but a greater cause for concern
01:50 is the amount of rain this is going to generate
01:53 because the ground is saturated
01:55 in places across Wales and southwest England.
01:58 That is likely to cause some issues.
01:59 So there is a warning in place,
02:01 further flooding, further disruption,
02:03 highly likely actually.
02:05 The rain will spread to all areas pretty rapidly,
02:07 and for most, it'll actually clear through the afternoon.
02:10 So something a little bit brighter.
02:12 Temperatures, if anything, going up through Wednesday
02:14 because that weather system is bringing milder air,
02:16 but it won't feel all that mild
02:19 with the wind and the rain.
02:21 That weather system should be clearing through,
02:23 but it's linked back to another one,
02:24 which potentially brings another spell of rain
02:27 as we go through Thursday.
02:29 In particular, this weather front could be quite active,
02:31 some heavy rain on this one
02:33 as it moves through during the course of Thursday.
02:36 So again, if you've got plans for Thursday,
02:37 do keep up to date with the details
02:39 because this could be quite a lively band of rain
02:41 as it crosses from west to east.
02:44 Again, following on behind,
02:45 something a little brighter for a time.
02:47 But again, as it clears through,
02:49 temperatures will be dropping once more,
02:51 back closer to average by Thursday.
02:54 Still quite mild across the southeast.
02:56 Low pressure systems continue to dominate
02:59 and you can see the isobars pretty close together
03:01 here through Friday.
03:03 Friday is going to be a boisterous, blusterous day
03:05 with sunshine and showers.
03:07 We'll all be in the colder air on Friday,
03:09 which means when the showers come along,
03:11 they could have a wintry flavor to them.
03:13 Over the hills of North Wales, Northern England,
03:16 and particularly Scotland,
03:17 there will be some snow mixed in with the showers.
03:19 But it's basically a showery day.
03:21 One minute it's dry, the next minute,
03:23 you're in the midst of a downpour.
03:24 And temperatures on Friday,
03:26 colder than at the start of the week,
03:28 but actually just close to average for the time of year.
03:31 Single figures across the north,
03:32 double digits likely further south.
03:35 Need to watch things as we go into the weekends
03:37 because low pressure systems continue to develop
03:40 and with a jet stream dipping south like this,
03:42 said that could be a breeding ground
03:44 for some areas of low pressure.
03:46 So that is one to watch
03:47 as we head towards Saturday and Sunday.
03:49 Keep up to date with the forecast
03:51 and of course, the best way to do that
03:53 is hit subscribe.
