00:00 Let's do it.
00:04 Hi I'm Cheryl.
00:05 I'm a beauty editor here at InStyle.
00:07 We're here for Transformation Live.
00:10 We're going to be doing a haircut, a lob today with celebrity stylist Mark Townsend.
00:16 And he's going to be showing us how to get this beautiful haircut on our Features Director
00:21 Lee.
00:22 And so we're going to walk right through it.
00:24 Let's do it.
00:25 We're doing a lob today.
00:26 We've talked before hand about length, but when you're going to get a haircut, make sure
00:31 you have a great conversation with your stylist before the scissors are picked up even.
00:35 Talk about length and talk about what kind of lifestyle you have and how much time you're
00:40 going to spend in the morning styling it.
00:42 If you've only got five minutes, your hair's not going to look like Giselle.
00:45 Exactly.
00:46 Unless you are Giselle.
00:47 However, I'll show you some tips and tricks to get something similar.
00:52 So Lee and I talked about a lob and we're going to go right around collarbone right
00:57 here.
00:58 And again, like instead of saying inches, I would rather say your hair will physically
01:01 fall right about here.
01:02 I was going to say, I think that's a really important part.
01:05 When people go in to see their stylist, they might be like, oh, I want two inches off,
01:09 three inches off.
01:10 And then they hate their haircut because they're like, it's so much shorter than I had expected
01:15 it to be.
01:16 Right.
01:17 So instead of saying the inches, show them exactly where you want it to fall on your
01:20 body.
01:21 Absolutely.
01:22 So that's a great starting point for the conversation of how you want your hair to look.
01:26 Just keep in mind, you know, you Google beautiful hair these days and you're going to see completely
01:32 unreal images of hair.
01:34 But I mean, I've done some of those photo shoots.
01:36 You have no idea the amount of extensions and wind machines and let's be honest, photoshopping
01:41 that goes into making that hair look so beautiful.
01:44 So a little bit of a reality check is in order when getting a haircut.
01:48 And guys, we're here with Dove Celebrity Stylist, Mark Townsend.
01:51 So please send your questions.
01:52 If you have any questions about lobs, about haircuts, whatever it might be, send them
01:57 below so we can have Mark answer them.
01:59 I'm ready to start.
02:00 Is that okay?
02:01 Let's go for it.
02:02 I can talk and cut at the same time.
02:04 So when someone goes in to see their hairstylist, you know, I think haircuts are something that
02:08 a lot of women are really, really scared of.
02:11 So you know, what should you kind of go in prepared for?
02:14 What should you do on your back end before just being like, hey, I want my haircut five
02:18 inches.
02:19 Well, like I said, photos are really, really, really good.
02:23 And also start paying attention to your morning schedule.
02:26 How off, like how much time really is important.
02:29 Some women have 30 minutes to an hour to get ready in the morning.
02:32 Some busy women have five to 10 minutes.
02:36 So talk to your stylist about how to get your hair looking like it's been done in 10 minutes
02:40 or less.
02:41 Okay.
02:42 So depending on your time, so if you're like a busy mom, maybe you don't have a full hour
02:46 to get your hair done.
02:48 But pin, you want to use Pinterest as your friend or like go through magazines, bring
02:53 in tears to your stylist.
02:56 Exactly.
02:57 And you know, stylists, we're kind of a brutally honest group of people.
03:01 Like we'll let you know if it's the right cut for your face shape.
03:05 And if we have to make a few adjustments to it, we will.
03:08 Like one of these things was she definitely wants to be able to keep her hair in a ponytail.
03:12 She is very busy.
03:14 So I want to be able to make sure her face framing layers can still get into a ponytail.
03:19 Right.
03:20 My favorite line today was, even if it's a little nub, as long as I can get it all off
03:25 my face.
03:26 I think that's important for a lot of women.
03:27 They want to feel like they can put their hair back in a ponytail if they want to work
03:30 out.
03:31 So with a style like a lob, what are some of the things that you want to keep in mind?
03:35 I think that a lot of celebrities are getting this cut.
03:38 It's really, really popular.
03:39 And I think it rides that perfect wave between it's not short, but it's not, it's got a style
03:45 to it.
03:46 So what should you keep in mind?
03:47 Like can only certain textures wear this or is this kind of like a, anybody can work it?
03:52 This is a super, super, super versatile haircut.
03:54 That's why we've seen it.
03:55 It's a haircut, you know, every few years it makes headlines because a celebrity does
03:59 it.
04:00 But think about it.
04:01 We saw Cindy Crawford do this in the eighties.
04:02 We saw Gisele do it in the late nineties.
04:06 Now Dakota Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen.
04:08 We're seeing all these great lobs, but they're versatile.
04:11 You can still wear them up.
04:13 You can put, you can change the texture if you want a really straight, sleek look.
04:17 It works amazing.
04:18 If you want to do like a beachy wave or work with your natural texture, this is a really
04:23 good one.
04:24 Women with really curly hair would be terrified of cutting too much length off because those
04:28 curls shrink up.
04:30 So again, just keep in mind that if you're going to wear your hair curly, tell your stylist
04:35 that.
04:36 Right.
04:37 I don't want to get my hair falling on the floor here, people, but it looks good so far.
04:41 Don't you worry.
04:45 When it comes to styling, what are some of the things that you really want to keep in
04:48 mind?
04:49 Say for example, if you have fine hair, if you have a lot, because I know, you know,
04:53 certain times like certain cuts can make it look either thicker or fuller.
04:57 So if you have fine hair, what are some things you should do?
04:59 Fine hair, you don't want to over layer the hair because then the ends can start to look
05:02 a little thin, scraggly.
05:06 You know, you want to have a little bit of bulk on your ends, which would be the opposite
05:10 for someone with very curly hair.
05:12 You want those layers to avoid the Christmas tree effect or like a nice A line.
05:18 Keep the A line to your dress, not your hair.
05:21 But we hear the word hack so much lately and I've been hearing like, what's the latest
05:27 hair hack?
05:28 And to be honest, the newest hair hack is learning how to use your products properly.
05:33 No two people have the exact same hair.
05:35 I mean, I work with a pretty famous set of twins and they have very different hair.
05:42 I have to approach their hair.
05:43 And Elizabeth too.
05:44 So like, Elizabeth, Elizabeth has the hair of both Ashley and Mary Kate put together.
05:50 She has the best set of hair I think I've ever worked with in my career.
05:54 So when it comes to like say thicker hair, what are things to keep in mind there?
05:59 You want to look for more of a smoothing lotion or I find myself using a lot of creams when
06:07 I'm working with thicker hair because you want to keep it nice and smooth so it doesn't
06:10 get too thick.
06:12 And again, with that A line look with the right layers, keeping this kind of face framing
06:17 shape is the way to go.
06:20 Like my fine hair girls, mousse is their best friend.
06:24 Mousse has such a bad rap from the eighties.
06:26 It's not the same.
06:27 It's not that just ball of alcohol anymore that can dry before you even get it to your
06:32 hair.
