00:00 Okay, go live! Hello everyone, Mike Karrick here, straight out of Zurich, Switzerland.
00:07 12 o'clock East Coast time and 9 o'clock in Los Angeles. Today here, what I'm going to share
00:16 with you is a really cool haircut. My model here wants to have shorter hair for summertime,
00:22 which is great. Just quickly what we did, she washed her hair today and now what I just did,
00:30 a little bit, I just sprayed a bit of water on it because her hair has a naturally wave,
00:36 natural wave shape and I want to emphasize the wave actually. So it's just really just
00:42 super light mist over it, so just that I kind of like relive the wave. So I know what the
00:50 wave pattern is because again it's going to be more like kind of a wash and wear kind of a
00:54 attitude towards her new haircut. I'm going to start the haircut here on the side and
01:01 when I cut short hair I actually like to part my hair here right by the curvature zone of the head
01:06 and here I'm going to also part the hair here over on the back of the head. I am going to be
01:16 slide cutting everything so I'll be using my Karchier K-Wide Royale. This particular shear
01:23 is very simple. I actually was one of the first shear company worldwide to actually polish edges,
01:30 so what we did here is a regular convex edge on it and then we polished it off so it doesn't cut
01:35 the straight line anymore. So perfect to slide cut the scalp. Kind of almost like a little bit
01:40 like a razor in the hair except I think it's much smoother on the hair than a razor as well. So here
01:49 I'm going to just a little bit and tilt your head here sideways and here just keep your head right
02:04 here. Yeah, just take that first section holding the hair pulling the hair straight out here at
02:09 the 90 and right here in front of my hand I shorten the hair. So there you go. I just want
02:18 to leave here a little bit of softness as you can see because her hair is a little bit, almost a
02:25 little bit on the finer side but perfect with a wave to it and I just don't want to get of course
02:31 no harsh lines nothing whatsoever because again we're letting it naturally dry. So again this is
02:37 how I do this. I'll just take again a vertical section right next to it. I'll pull the hair
02:45 straight towards me. Here I have my guide and I just here right here at the pivot that movement
02:53 is I just open and close my thumb very gently. Okay as you can see here also what's very important
03:00 actually when you start cutting somebody's hair short always ensure someone's hairline as you can
03:05 see here the hairline is very very high up so we have to create here hair. We certainly don't want
03:10 to create a hole back here. Okay so we have to be careful we have to make sure that we actually
03:16 leave some length in the nape. Okay right on here continue and I'll slide again right in front of my
03:25 fingers. So excellent this is where we as you can see here leaving that length here in the nape.
03:34 Okay but here we're short but we want to make sure we have that corner here filled in. I'm
03:39 certainly going to adjust it later on again but first I'm just kind of like building the structure
03:44 of the haircut. Okay so right on here as well so for all slight cutting shear fan the Korg Shear K
03:54 Wide. It's a W has your name on it and absolutely dream come true. A shear that has
04:03 it's made me a better hairstylist actually because it reacts like no other shear does in hair.
04:08 Absolutely brilliant. Dream come true and also we're having a sale still going on right now so
04:17 anybody that is interested in ordering a pair go for it mykorg.com and you get free shipping and
04:26 handling and about give and take about 20% discount depends on what shear model you're
04:33 picking but free shipping and handling as well. So we're going to pull it off the website in about
04:38 12 hours I would say. So here well I work exactly till the center back like so. Excellent here you
04:49 can see beautiful and now what I'm going to be doing here is I'm going to do the same thing
04:56 on the other side before we're going to move up to the top layer. That's my own personal choice
05:06 I like to first work both sides meaning just one side and do the same thing on the other side.
05:14 Some people like to work all the way up till the center I like to first do both sides left and
05:20 right that's just personal preference I have better balance better feeling for the balance
05:27 of the distribution. So there we go just like so.
05:32 Excellent
05:43 Same thing pulling the hair straight towards me
05:47 and right in front of my hand let's cut this down same thing like on the other side. Now
05:56 before you're going to continue double check quickly that the side you just that I just
06:02 cut the second one that it's the same size length as the other side. Okay if that looks good
06:09 perfect we're just simply going to move on. Oh it's going to look so delicious.
06:15 Especially it's so nice to actually see that hair cut off first because she has a little
06:23 bit of a natural movement in it and I just love natural movement I just think it's so
06:27 so soft and feminine. Excellent same thing here again too I'm just going to pull everything
06:36 straight out and right here in front of my hand here very gently very gently right here again
06:43 right in the pivot right up in here that's where we do the shaping.
06:47 Vertical section I like to work with verticals and diagonals because it doesn't leave any cutting
06:58 lines. The more horizontally you go is more of a weight line you create so
07:05 unless I cut straight through or a one length bob but otherwise I like to work in verticals and
07:11 verticals and diagonals they're just much softer. It's kind of my preference and my personal taste
07:18 as well. How to go about hair let's see there's many ways lead to wrong and you know there's
07:28 many ways you can approach this. I just found this here a very safe way a very easy way.
07:33 I don't like to make cutting hair complicated I think we already have enough going on in our
07:40 lives and really cutting hair let's be honest it's really not a complicated thing. You always
07:45 have to look at someone's hairline at someone's hair texture and then you can sculpt it accordingly.
07:55 Right here just take my angle over it and I'm gonna blend it in to the other side here.
08:03 Excellent so right here as well and I stand behind her here I have a good feeling it's coming on
08:18 here well and again as I said in the beginning I'm just gonna first do the whole structure of
08:24 the haircut till we then gonna go back into all the detailing but as you can see here there's
08:30 not one cut in line it's just all beautiful and soft. Okay so now we're gonna move up again
08:37 to the other side and what I'm going to be doing now here is just the lightest lightest lightest
08:48 mist of water as you can see just the lightest mist just the lightest mist of water here.
08:58 Excellent now I'm gonna go right here up to where she parts her hair I'm not gonna take the part
09:06 like completely nice and solid here as you can see just kind of how she wears it naturally
09:13 I like to approach it this way same thing and here as well just blend it in.
09:26 Vertical here pull it down follow the guide.
09:51 And just right here as well till the center back.
09:56 Excellent anything on the other side.
10:04 Now she's gonna wear her hair parted on the right side so she's wearing it to the left so
10:12 I'm gonna take this entire left piece and the left side will seem to be then maybe a little
10:19 bit heavier but certainly not asymmetric anything kind of weird going on she can still of course as
10:28 well wear it to the other side but I'm just going to take that entire piece now so I'm
10:33 crossing over onto her other side right now I take here vertical as well.
10:45 Just like so as you can see here just comb it here really push to the side.
10:52 Pulling it straight out here that's my guide.
11:08 Next section here as well.
11:15 Like so.
11:24 Promo pig knee kit as well.
11:39 Always ensure that you place the head to where it's comfortable for you.
11:50 That you can do a great job.
11:55 Cool.
12:03 Over here just to kind of cross-reference this into it there we go.
12:20 Super excellent here just quickly from the back as you can see here beautiful this is
12:28 with a little bit the heavier side but it's going to be absolutely great also love what's
12:33 going on with the color now we have the top layer a little lighter enable a little darker
12:38 darker she has a certain possess to it I'm just going to grab here one more piece.
12:47 Excellent yeah that's the guy here I was looking for so I was adjusted obviously when you slide
12:54 cut you are not creating straight lines you're actually everything is blended into it it has
13:00 almost as I said in the beginning kind of like a razor edge kind of a feel to it so
13:04 what it is is you not always try to create every single hair at the same
13:12 length because we all are uneven but you want to have and what you want to create is a even
13:18 shape okay and also the hair that I create and that I cut and I want to give to my clients
13:24 shall complement someone's lifestyle shall be easy to take care of it shall suit someone
13:38 okay whatever that is but this is the hair that I'm thriving for and not just because I learned
13:43 a new technique I want to do it now or a new trend that doesn't suit someone hair shall suit someone
13:50 because we a woman shall feel like a million bucks about and by the way us guys as well
13:55 all right so here this is great so we have created here the actual shape now we're going to go into
14:04 it and we're going to detail and I'm going to switch my shear to the KM Slide Royale one of
14:13 my biggest pride the entire sliding line this is how it works absolutely brilliant has a very
14:19 different finish on the blade we got a calmex edge on the right the top is straight the left is
14:24 rounded this side is very short we got a flat tip got some polymer glide here at the pivot
14:29 and what you can do here is now you can slide cut and sculpt the hair accordingly to it
14:35 and this is what we're going to be doing down here is we're just going to take a
14:43 diagonal across the head here and just going to clip here the very ends and just going to ensure
14:53 that everything here just blends perfectly into it and this is not really about length anymore
15:00 because we shaped it up now so now we just want to ensure that we have not too much weight going on
15:06 and that all the hair just folds beautifully in every way possible
15:13 utmost important also here neckline we can create now as I said in the very beginning
15:22 our neckline is a little bit higher up so her hair doesn't grow that far down so we've got
15:26 a great one here and here we can just beautifully sculpt it now into
15:33 the shape and because of having the shear of course they're having a flat tip you can just
15:43 gorgeously beautifully here very simply slide cut that weight out and sculpt into a really cool do
15:51 as well
15:56 super right to the side here
16:12 love to point cut with the texturizing shear, sculpting shear without pulling on the hair
16:17 it's absolutely heaven. See tools nowadays have become much easier when I learned cutting hair
16:24 in the mid 80s tools weren't like that so now it's definitely much easier so
16:30 for anybody out there that actually has started cutting hair as well
16:36 let's say as late in the 70s or the 80s you know check out the new tools they're a lot of fun
16:43 you can do much more stuff with it plus you're also faster and I like to be fast
16:50 because that means you can take more clients
16:53 when you obviously here we're finishing it dry now what is utmost important completely dry what's
17:04 utmost important you have to move that hair always make sure see here if you have a little bit of a
17:11 weight line so here we just go in and just sculpt it out it's very minimal what you take out also
17:18 don't be afraid about the time to it. Right in front, holy smoke you're a new you
17:32 very cool now what I'm going to do here is well I'm just going to bring it all the way over to
17:39 the other side just going to clip here the ends just to ensure here it has an asymmetric feel
17:48 to it but it's not really asymmetric so she can wear the hair on the other side and that's why I'm
17:56 also bringing it over here you can flip it over the hand like so always ensure as well when you
18:06 look at from somebody's profile here it's all balanced well nice this is definitely important
18:21 we'll be up next is premier Orlando show
18:25 June what is it again I'm leaving on the first second third four and five
18:33 we got that in Orlando, Florida definitely great show check it out we have three classroom
18:41 each day one Saturday Sunday Monday Saturday the exhibitor floor is not open so but we are
18:48 having classrooms so check it out I'll be there with Ross, Steven, Adams and Vincenzo
18:57 will be teaching classes then thereafter we have ABCH it's America's Board of Hair Colorists
19:09 I'll be also teaching cutting classes super cool and then we also have IBS New York sorry IBS Las
19:19 Vegas the end of the month the end of June and in the meantime I'll be actually seeing clients in
19:27 New York also in Washington DC with superstar hair colorist Michael Connelly
19:37 and Los Angeles too so quite a busy week indeed we're actually busy months traveling
19:50 so look how beautiful he's starting to shape up here absolutely gorgeous
19:55 absolutely brilliant and again her hair maybe looks a little thicker on
20:04 on the on Facebook now on the live stream but it actually it's on the finer side so again it just
20:12 really depends how you slice cut and texturize your chair it's all completely doable awesome
20:31 super so finishing touches right up here just the top layer a little bit over directing
20:38 up here into a 90 as you can see look I'm moving my hand while I cut just want to make sure it's
20:45 not too heavy right up in here then I think we're pretty looking pretty good how does it feel okay
20:52 nice excellent
20:55 anybody that tuned in if you want to follow me on Instagram it's uh it's a Mike on the line
21:09 card I'll post all sorts of stuff a little bit from my travels and hair stuff of course
21:16 many other things so excellent in the flow that I announced now the Facebook
21:20 live event too we're trying to do uh we're trying to be active about it
21:27 so trying our best here this is just super and I think it's also the trick also is to be able to
21:36 stop because you know don't overwork something because you know what happens
21:42 as you keep on cutting and cutting and cutting hair gets shorter shorter shorter and trust me
21:50 um if the client gets too short hair she's not going to come back for sure okay so what we're
22:00 going to be doing now here we're just going to add some styling product to it a little bit of
22:04 called perfect styling wax super light styling wax perfect for her kind of a hair texture
22:12 very important always rub it in between your hands very well and I'm just kind of like
22:17 mushing it a little bit into it let's get a little bit of texture here cool
22:22 excellent you know why don't you stand up quickly
22:26 so very good so
22:37 excellent yeah pull it over a bit so fantastic cool yeah let's take that one off
22:48 it looks even better without the cape on so here let's go through the haircut here one more time
22:55 quickly we got a beautiful shape here short in the nape and on the side you have a nice top layer
23:01 here as you can see here beautiful from the back of the head as well this is the side you can pull
23:06 back super nice and can hear the front which you can style over to the side or not even as much
23:14 you know it's completely up to her she has here complete freedom to style
23:19 awesome thank you everyone for watching and um see you Orlando LA Vegas one of these places
23:34 so thanks see you soon thanks for watching
