00:00Personal best through the first sector for Hajar, for Albon, for Stroll, for Sunoda, for Sainz, and for Gabriel Bortoletto.
00:09The Haas is yet to push on. Berman's in the first sector. Ocon is on an outlap. He's gonna be last over the line.
00:15Albon improves to P8. So Lawson down to 13th, and he's backed off this lap.
00:20He may just about have time for another one, but it's gonna be tight. Lando Norris went out there and improved his first and third sectors.
00:27He is ahead by three tenths of a second. Pressure lap time this for Carlos Sainz, who comes over the line, goes ahead of his teammate,
00:34and finds his way into the next part of the session. Improvements coming from loads of those further back as well.
00:40Lawson now 15th, and I don't think he has started a flying lap. This could be it for Lawson.
00:45Fifth for Hajar is a superb effort. Ninth for Lance Stroll. Yuki Sunoda is in the drop zone.
00:50Gabriel Bortoletto is pushing on. The racing bull car is up to ninth position.
00:56Gabriel Bortoletto made it through into Q2. SQ2 at the moment is possible, because he's got to 14th.
01:03So Lawson is gone. 18th, and he's pitted. Disaster continues for Liam Lawson.
01:08The two Haas cars started their laps very late, and we ride on board with Oli Berman.
01:12Gasly is done. He's in the drop zone. Hulkenberg is improving as well.
01:16They're all pushing. They're all on personal bests, and they need it.
01:19One Haas over the line, and going to ninth position.
01:22What a lap when it counted for Oliver Berman, who now drops Jack Doohan into the drop zone,
01:27along with his teammate Pierre Gasly. Bortoletto on the bubble.
01:30Let's see whether Hulkenberg can get past, whether he can out-qualify his teammate in this format.
01:35Hulkenberg can't find the time. He's out. What about Esteban Ocon?
01:39He improves to 18th, but he can't make it either.
01:43Just understeered wide at turn nine, and it is an understeer-inducing corner,
01:48that you've got to wait for the front to turn.
01:50You can see the steering lock on, and he's just tried to squeeze on the gas,
01:54but he's run too far off the road there, lost the traction of the rear tyres,
01:58and that is Lawson done.
02:00That was Esteban Ocon putting a wheel on the gravel, coming through the 16th and final turn.
02:05He's been out-qualified by his new teammate, Oliver Berman.
02:09And it's Doohan, Gasly, Ocon, Hulkenberg, and Liam Lawson is 20th in the Red Bull.
02:19Hamilton's out there, and he is on Norris' pace in the middle sector.
02:23So this is more like it, then, from Hamilton.
02:25We have seen that he's been able to match Norris. First lap, not so much.
02:29Now he's got the tyres fired up, and it's working.
02:31Alonso's first sector, once again, is really good.
02:34His middle sector's decent, so it's looking good for Fernando Alonso.
02:36Good teamwork from the Racing Bulls.
02:38Slipstream orchestrated on the long back straight here for Yuki Tsunoda.
02:42Every second helps, every tenth of a second helps around this circuit,
02:47and it's the fourth-fastest time for the Japanese driver,
02:49and Lance Stroll goes ahead of him into P4 at the moment.
02:53One year ago, Aston Martin were in the top three on the grid around here.
02:57Lewis Hamilton finds the top three.
02:59He's two-tenths of a second back compared to the benchmark set by Lando Norris.
03:03Charles Leclerc doesn't have the pace of his teammate at the moment.
03:06He's only in fifth.
03:08What about the rest of the order?
03:09Fernando Alonso makes it into the top eight.
03:11He's ahead of both Mercedes.
03:13Yeah, Mercedes slipping down, need to find a bit of something.
03:15Behrmann gets into the top ten as well, but everyone behind is improving.
03:19Super lap from Oliver Behrmann, who is really having a better time of it in round two
03:24compared to round one.
03:26Sainz is not going to make it into the top ten shootout.
03:29Neither is Gabriel Bortoletto.
03:31He's gone into 13th position.
03:32Alex Albon was a star in Melbourne.
03:34He's a star in Shanghai.
03:36A superb lap to go ahead of the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
03:40Tsunoda is in eighth.
03:41Alonso is in ninth.
03:42Tenth for Oliver Behrmann, who was this man's teammate when it came to Formula 2 last year.
03:47But it's Antonelli who finds the fourth fastest time and knocks out the Haas driver.
03:52Russell is next up.
03:54He was behind Antonelli.
03:55He's a rookie teammate before.
03:57He comes across the line.
03:58He's second fastest.
03:59Ahead of the McLaren of Oscar Piastri.
04:02This is where Hajar's chance of SQ3 disappeared.
04:05If you haven't driven the circuit before, it is pretty specialist coming through this first turn.
04:09It goes on and on and on and you've got to go through five gears before you just pick it up there at turn three.
04:16Alonso, Behrmann, Sainz, Bortoletto and Hajar are out.
04:23Lewis Hamilton, the rear moving around on the exit at turn 13.
04:29They're desperate to stand on the power and take all the momentum they can onto this long straight with the DRS open.
04:36Piastri's in the mix as well.
04:37This is going to be hundredths, if not thousandths of a second.
04:41As we come over the line, Hamilton has the middle and it's the best one.
04:46The middle sector is the best of anyone out there.
04:48One minute to go.
04:49Still a battle rages between the Ferraris and the McLaren.
04:53Will Lewis Hamilton go to the top?
04:55He will by eight hundredths of a second.
04:58Norris is going quickly though through the middle part of the lap.
05:01Here's Charles Leclerc to the line.
05:02The Ferrari cuts the beam and goes to third.
05:05He's two tenths back on what his new teammate could do.
05:09Now Piastri and Norris are the only drivers who can get in the mix when it comes to Hamilton.
05:14Piastri misses out and Lando Norris is in the background.
05:18Lando Norris is pitting and Lewis Hamilton has found a lap time to take him top.
05:24Can Verstappen take sprint pole?
05:27It's only to start at the front for a 19 lap race, but it's so competitive.
05:32And once again, Formula One is not following the script.
05:36How about the world champion?
05:37Does he take it away from Lewis Hamilton?
05:39Oh, he misses out by less than two hundredths of a second.
05:43And the two titans are at the front of the field.
05:46There's a seven time world champion and a four time world champion.
05:50Welcome to Ferrari Lewis Hamilton.
05:53He's the driver to beat in the opening sprint of the year.
05:57Over the line goes Albon to eighth position.
06:00Yuki Tsunoda will complete our order.
06:03He's got the hairpin at 14.
06:05Hamilton, Verstappen, Piastri, Leclerc, Russell, Norris in sixth.
06:11No one would have predicted that.
06:13Now, where does Yuki slot into this order?
06:15As we complete our top ten, eighth place is a great lap.
06:19Where are we?
06:20That's San Diego.
06:21Really?
06:22Yeah.
06:23Good job, San Diego.
06:28Mega job.
06:32And that is why Lando pitted.
06:34He was on for a pole lap, had to throw everything out of the final corners.
06:38You have to take some risk.
06:39And he's made a big mistake.
06:40Sicked on the grid.
06:41Max Verstappen, not with the pace overall.
06:44He's only two hundredths of a second away.
06:46And the support that Lewis Hamilton has is outrageous.
