00:00The cone, Buck, the size of the cone has a lot to do with the times here, especially on the turn.
00:07It's a tall cone. When you get right here, when you get to this turn right here, you can't cheat
00:12it. If you get a little baby cone, you see guys try and cut the corner a little bit, try and get
00:16away with it. Yeah, if it's a tall cone, it makes it harder. Yeah, that's what you're looking for.
00:20So as a scout, if you get to the school and they give you the little cones, you got to stack about
00:2410 of them up. Yeah, the tricks of the scout. Here's Tomathan Good. Get his shot here.
00:34You know, here in Savannah, I talked a little bit about Jordan Morgan,
00:38you know, who ended up as a first-round pick of the Green Bay Packers, 25th overall.
00:44You know, he was kind of like Savannah, a guy who, you know, played tackle at Arizona,
00:48but we thought maybe could move in to guard as well. I'll be kind of curious to see how that
00:52decision's made for Savannah. Yeah, to me, I liked him at guard. I think you put him in at right
00:57guard. Well, no, you put him at right guard and let him just move people. You know, I think some
01:03teams will still, you know, have opportunity for him to play right tackle and, you know, he's going
01:08to be more of an asset in the run game initially than he is in pass protection. That's why I like
01:12him at guard. Give him some neighbors and let him just play big. He talked about Micah Potty,
01:16you know, who is, you know, that's the comp. That's someone that you're looking at body type
01:21wise that he compares to. Of course, the Packers just paid a big-time guard to come over from the
01:3049ers and Aaron Banks. He got big money. Almost $80 million over four years to help solidify
01:40that starting five for Green Bay.
01:43Let's go, hurry back. Let's go. This TJ Jackson getting ready to go here.
01:50West Virginia.
01:53I feel like this drill does benefit those that are just a little bit closer to the ground,
01:58right? They don't have to get down quite as much. It also benefits if you get long arms. You don't
02:02have to bend as much. Yep. But really, it's kind of you want to see the change of direction
02:08and how fluid and how quick can you be.
02:16You would be shocked how many times you can explain how to properly do this and guys have
02:20trained for it and how many times they will screw it up in terms of putting their off hand on the
02:24ground. Yep. Trying to get over the top of the cone. You know, it's you'd be amazed as what I'm
02:32telling you. I believe you. I believe you. I see a lot of these high school camps where they're
02:39getting times on this stuff and they don't, not all of them, I shouldn't put a blanket statement,
02:44but a lot of them don't know how to give the rules properly. I see these off hands going
02:48down. I'm like, geez, I could run a fast three cone time if I could do all that stuff.
02:54Yeah. And this is also an interesting one because it's not necessarily, you know,
02:57it doesn't necessarily correlate with 40 time, right? With speed that way, because,
03:02you know, if we go back and look, see if I can find it here from, let's see, it's the second
03:08group of wide outs. A lot of times wide outs on the three cone and change of direction stuff,
03:13like Cooper Cupp's three cone was off the charts. Like a lot of those guys who maybe didn't run the
03:16fastest 40s, but you can tell the athleticism, change direction, body control. And that's where
03:21I was, that's why I brought it up because Tez Johnson, you know, kind of surprised us running
03:254-5-1 in the 40, but then absolutely crushed the three cone at 6-6-5, right? Wide receiver out of
03:31Oregon. So you'll, you know, you'll see that sometimes as well, but you can really see that
03:35change of direction and sudden explosiveness coming out of breaks. Did we lose Buck? Do we
03:42still got Buck down there? Y'all got me? Hey, Buck, what was your pro day job? Everybody,
03:48I was the broad jump. Well, that was my job. What was your pro day job? So I normally would
03:53always get stuck doing the DB drill. So like I didn't necessarily, I would do like the 10s.
03:58Yep. So I'd do the 10s doing the testing and then if they didn't have the position coaches there,
04:04then I always would get stuck taking all the DBs through all the drills. Yeah, if we didn't have,
04:09if we didn't have a quarterback, I got stuck. Oh yeah. Dude, my arm at the end of spring,
04:14my arm felt like it was going to fall off. Yeah, everyone has a job and when you're the rat pack
04:18in a group like the West Coast, everyone knows what the job is. Hey, DJ, come on.
04:25Let's get that arm. Yeah, I don't want anybody else throwing because you know what it's supposed
04:28to look like. So once you show that you can do that job, that job is yours for eternity. Yeah,
04:33I was a long jump guy or the broad jump guy. So when they landed, you had to grab,
04:38I kind of grabbed their ankle so that they don't fall back, you know? So you grab that. Oh yeah,
04:43I would grab, cause if they fall back, we'll be there all day doing this. Oh yeah. So then you
04:48take the ruler out, you know, the long ruler and then that's how you get the, that's how you get
04:52the line there. But I'm not telling, it took me a long time to get that, you know, that sweaty
04:56smell out of my left hand from just grabbing that everybody's ankle. It had been worked out,
05:01you know, it's not a good, not a good situation. Uh, you know what job I never wanted DJ? What's
05:05that? I never wanted to do the measurements, arm length, hand size, because all the scouts
05:10are always complaining. This is different than the combine. Well, we saw some discrepancies,
05:16you know, this year, Buck, we saw some, you know, like for instance, Jalen Milrow's hand size was
05:20measured larger, you know, at the combine than it was at the senior bowl. And look, you can stretch
05:25that hand out a bunch, but it's not growing at this point. So there is some differences. Yeah.
05:32And, and, and you know what the scouting community will let you know. Yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. All
05:38right. I mean, it's a, it is really top notch. Now the home of Brian Schottenheimer head coach
05:46of the Dallas Cowboys as they begin a new era here. Remember, you know, Cooper BB,
05:54they found in the draft last year from Kansas state, wasn't necessarily here at the pro day
05:57competing, but is now a big 12 alum here and practicing in this facility, the Ford center,
06:08John Nelson going through the three cone drill. Yeah. After we get through these cone drills,
06:14they've got it set up at two different stations. So you've got the short shuttle, then you've got
06:17the three cone drill. So you finish one, you go to the other, that way they have them both going
06:21at the same time and hopefully be a little more efficient. And then once that is completed,
06:26we get these guys out to some field drills. We'll start seeing them get jump over bags,
06:30see some bags, working through bags, see some get offs. There's a football on a stick down there.
06:37Yeah. We'll get a fridge is watching, but we'll get to the good stuff here and D line workouts,
06:42buck. They will they will attempt to gas these guys a little bit. Check the gas tank, so to speak.
06:47Oh, 100%. That's part of the deal. You want to see what kind of effort they'll give when they're
06:52tired. So good thing they don't have Tim Kramer out here. Oh, that's the one that I used to love.
06:57Just wear him down. Pete Carroll did not. He famously put the USC D line through the ringer
07:05one year and Pete Carroll was not happy with how long he was making those guys work.
07:14I mean, it was a little tough. Hey, when you guys look for D linemen here,
07:17when you look at the short shuttle, you know, which is the 20 yard shuttle,
07:21right? And then you look at the cone drill, like, where do you where do you find value with the
07:25with the defensive lineman? Are you kind of you're evaluating different aspects of the game
07:29in these different drills? What are you seeing? How does it translate? Yeah, you're looking at
07:32change of direction, overall athleticism, you know, to me with D lineman, Buck, I don't know
07:38where you are, but I always put a lot more stock in the jumps just because I want to see how
07:43explosive they are. Well, yeah, the jumps, everything when it comes to like it should
07:48marry up with the 10 time we talk about how fast we want those guys to get off or whatever.
07:53The thing that I would pay attention to is the three cone and not necessarily the time,
07:57but just the ability to bend and redirect. Because you think about how many times you have to
08:01give a second or third effort to get a sack. I just want to see if they have the ability
08:05and the flexibility to be able to make some of those things happen.
08:09You got to stay straight down the line. He went way, way out. That's Andy Spire with
08:14Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There you see him with the red shirt on.
08:18Getting those times. He's added a nice mustache to his repertoire over the years. I appreciate
08:22that, Andy. That's a good look. One of the one of the best guys, just an unbelievable,
08:27unbelievable dude. We see a lot of guys on a knee. Andy's chosen to kind of go with that
08:33because you want people behind you to be able to see you got it. You go first one always goes down
08:38and then the next one can go on a knee. Then you could have somebody stand up if they wanted to.
08:42That's just a deep dive on scouting protocol. That's what we are. You see they've stacked the
08:47cones there. You see they had little baby cones. They did. So they stacked them. They did.
08:52All the tricks of the trade.
08:58Do you ever have to move a 40-yard dash finish line back a yard?
09:02Somebody tried to set you up for a 39-yard 40 ever in a pro day?
09:06Well, you always got to measure it. You always got to measure it out and don't just go off of
09:09the field either. You know what the lines are on the field. You do not trust that.
09:15That's good. Here we go. DL 31. Who do we got here?
09:20This 31 is Eric Phillips and a nice 40, 41 and 45.
09:26Four sacks this last year at Cincinnati.
09:33You want to try and stay tight to that last cone. Kind of just explode.
09:40Here's 32. Here's Randolph. He's an interesting one. Just watching him so far through the day.
09:46Randolph, yeah. Some of the fastest 40s from the D-line group.
09:49He's the one we said looked like a basketball player over 6'6".
09:54Two interceptions too this year at Baylor.
09:58I was talking to Dave Aranda about it and their head coach there in Waco and
10:02said, man, sometimes I just wish I could have one more day with Garmin.
10:07One more day just to kind of continue to refine the technique and kind of get that skill set
10:13really in tune. I feel like the best football in his career is still yet to come.
10:21Right hand, right hand.
10:28Have any tightness, Buck, you get to that top cone. That's where that'll get exposed a little bit.
10:33Yeah, every time. That final stretch. Can you bend down and turn around?
10:45Let's see. Matt Terpening from the Colts down there.
10:48Terp looks like he could still hoop, Buck, if he needed to.
10:52Oh, he definitely can be on the all scout basketball team. We'll take him.
10:56Is that right?
10:57Yeah, it's not a big honor. Now, that's a low bar with the scout basketball team.
11:04He's in the starting five.
11:09Jeremy Robinson.
11:13What did Robinson run here? He ran 519, was his? No, where is he? No, 483. I was going to say he ran.
11:20Yeah, he ran pretty good.
11:21Ran well.
11:23Yeah, Coach Leipold kind of sees him as maybe, you know, again,
11:27this stand-up outside linebacker type.
11:29Played the most football of the Kansas D-linemen that are here in attendance.
11:36Xavier Ross jumping up to the line.
11:39He's one who I thought had, he's the 519.
11:51Yeah, we'll get, you know, these times they'll all get out there. They'll all end up getting
11:55They'll all get out there. They'll all end up getting posted. The teams have it. The way the
11:58process works is, you know, a lot of guys now have their tablets, not just the pen and paper,
12:04but they can insert those numbers right away. If not, you throw those down on your sheet,
12:09you get back to your hotel tonight, and you've got a lot of work to do.
12:11It's a lot of data entry. I think people think about scouting. You have to watch players and
12:15watch tape and all fun and games. Well, there's also some long nights where you're taking one
12:20number after another and entering them into a computer. Data entry.
12:24A lot of data entry.
12:32Asafo Mensah.
12:40I'd be getting close to the end of the group here.
12:43Three sacks this year for the Horned Frogs and finishes that three-cone drill.
12:56You get some of these final three-cone drills run through as you get a look
13:04at Caleb Taylor from Kansas. 50 tackles over his career.
13:12Run his 40. If we look back, ended up at a 5.45. Try to put a nice time together here in that
13:21three-cone. Got to go with the white cleats as a big guy, too. Just going to make you look a
13:25little bit faster. That's right. Yeah, I was watching, you know, Lee Fitanu from Arizona
13:31State had those bright yellows and was tracking those things when that O-line group was out here.
13:42Rhett Lewis, Daniel Jeremiah, Bucky Brooks here with you.
13:49As we get set for some of these position drills, they've got them
13:53ready to go. That first bag drill is ready just as soon as these three-cones wrap up.
14:01Cody Waltersheed from Oklahoma State.
14:04Going through here, we had Dylan Woodkey from Kansas. Should be one of the next ones. I think
14:13if he, unless he has already done his.
14:18You forget how many guys are just in this group. It takes a while to get through all these.
14:21Who's Conroe Toole? Hey, Conroe Toole. Nice 40-yard dash, 4.66. Again, not a ton of production.
14:27You see it on the screen there, just the two and a half sacks, but has done enough in this
14:31workout with as well as he ran that piques your interest.
14:35Oh, that's it. I think that's a good, that's it. I'm going to see that three-cone.
14:38Nice. That's a good looking three-cone.
14:43All right.
14:47So we got a 40. We got a three-cone. Good, good. He's got a couple of tools in his box there.
14:52That's what we're looking at there.
14:53Okay.
14:54That was for Sarah.
14:55That was. Hey, Bucky, find some tape, man. Go put a 28 on the back of his shirt, man.
15:00We've got to get a number on Conroe Toole.
15:01I know. I know. He can't run around being blank, man.
15:05No, he's, I mean, he's lighting it up right now in the testing.
15:08Leader in the clubhouse in the 40s of the day at 4.66.
15:14Here's B.J. Green. He had a nice time as well. He was one of our leaders at
15:194.7, I want to say. Yeah, 4.70 on his first run.
15:23You'll be shocked. Some guys cannot do the three-cone. I've, and Buck, you've been there.
15:28I've been at Pro Day, and some guys, after like the fifth time, are like,
15:31no more chances. This is your last chance. We're not doing this anymore.
15:34But they just, they don't have the body control or the balance to be able to do it. It's, yeah,
15:41it's interesting.
15:43Seven flat for Conroe Toole, courtesy of producer extraordinaire Ed O'Brien.
15:46Baby Ed.
15:51Oh, B.J. Oh, B.J. Turn it, turn it. Oh.
15:55So if you look at the top 10 SAC artists off the edge last year, their average three-cone time was
16:017.01. He's right there. He's right there with them. Just a little bit under that average.
16:06What's the 40 on that one?
16:08The 40 would be 4.62.
16:10He was at 4.66.
16:11Those guys can get out and go. He's not that far off.
16:14No.
16:14So again, if you look at the computer programs that scouts use, they have
16:19color-coded in terms of whether you're above the line or below the line.
16:23So you might look at measurements that might have, you know, his height weight,
16:26he might be in the green, but then the speed and the testing, he might be in the red.
16:30Okay.
16:31He's going to be, you know, in terms of the size, the speed,
16:34greenish, testing, he's got a lot of green on his card.
16:38Yeah, he's played 44 games with 16 starts. And yeah, as you mentioned, the production, not,
16:42you know, super eye-popping, but these,
16:44these numbers in the landscape of what we've seen today with this group certainly are.
16:49Go!
16:49Yeah, hop up. Good. All over. All the way over. Good. Good.
16:51Hey, smooth exchange. Exchange. Bow! Good. Invertible.
16:54Bow! Get to me. Get to me. Get to me.
16:56Good job.
16:57Good. That's a good one. That's a good one.
16:59Bend. Talk about bend, burst, and then effort to finish.
17:02Get it. Get it.
17:03Good drill.
17:03Get it. Get it. Get it.
17:05Go!
17:05Yeah, keep your eyes up a little bit.
17:07Let's roll, baby. Let's roll.
17:08All right. Now we're grooving.
17:08Take off. Take off. Over.
17:10Go. Get back. Get back.
17:10We got some juice down on the field now.
17:12Go. Get vertical. Good. Bow. Get vertical.
17:13Ricky Barber.
17:14Get to me. You good. Bow.
17:16Bow. Bow. Bow. Bow. Bow. Bow.
17:19I see the foot quickness, balance, be under control.
17:25We got Buck. Is Buck down there?
17:28Yeah, I'm with you.
17:29Buck, talk about balance, body control.
17:31Big part of this thing, showing off your athleticism as well as your quickness.
17:35Yeah, multidirectional movements.
17:37Being able to make multiple things happen in succession.
17:40Here, Tyler Bay, the guy who's a star now at the Eastridge Rhyme Game.
17:43Being able to kind of get through the bags, make a move, redirect.
17:46That's what you want to see.
17:49Brendan Mott, again, you want to talk about production.
17:51Certainly got it right there, leading the conference in sacks.
17:55Got to keep your legs underneath you.
17:56Go. Get back.
17:57Go. Get back.
17:57Vertical. Vertical.
17:58Get out from the skis a little bit.
17:59Bow. Good exchange.
18:01Get to me. Get to me.
18:02Get to me. Let it go.
18:03Debris on the carry.
18:04Good. Good. Good.
18:07Yeah, he has a power generator.
18:09That's what you would say down there, lower body.
18:11Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it.
18:12Get it. Get it. Get it.
18:14Again, the body types, Buck.
18:16There's a lot of similar body types down there.
18:19Yeah, it's so funny, man.
18:20The guys that you love are the ones that show DB-like feet,
18:23like quick, in and out, like a little typewriter.
18:25Moving back and forth, doing this part of it, which is the W drill.
18:28And then can they put their foot in the ground and redirect and go chase down the field?
18:33John Nelson.
18:34Go. Come back.
18:35Get in. Get in.
18:36Get out of there.
18:37Get in. Get in.
18:38Good. Good. On me.
18:39I'm reaching off the bags.
18:40Said go. Take off.
18:41Good. Bow.
18:43The last part of that is just simulating like you're going to chase.
18:46The ball's out.
18:46You've got to get your foot in the ground and go chase.
19:01Hey, smooth as fast.
19:02Smooth as fast.
19:03Said go. Take off.
19:04Good. Get over.
19:05Good. All the way over.
19:05Good. Bow.
19:06Yes, sir. Good exchange.
19:07Good exchange.
19:08Good exchange.
19:09Big DBs, baby.
19:10Yes, sir.
19:10Go. Get him out of there.
19:11Good one. Great rep. Great rep. Great rep.
19:13It's tough, too, when you get some of the big guys then mixed in with the edge guys.
19:17So one guy goes through it.
19:18You go, wait, what happened to the next guy?
19:20Well, he's 50, 60 pounds difference.
19:21That's right.
19:22Good. Let's do it. Let's do it.
19:23Said go. Take off.
19:25You good?
19:25Go. Take off.
19:26Bon Quoi.
19:26Good. Plant.
19:27Go back. Get back. Get back.
19:28Get back. Vertical.
19:29Javier Garrett transferred into Kansas from North Dakota State.
19:33Bow. Bow.
19:34Good.
19:34Kind of looking down to, you know, kind of assessing where the feet are.
19:37I want to see him bend his knees a little bit more there.
19:41Conor O'Toole had a day today.
19:45Yes, sir.
19:46Looks good going through the bags.
19:47Said go. Take off.
19:48Had a good three-cone time.
19:49Had the best 40 time of the week.
19:51That's right.
19:51Bow. Do a good square round.
19:53Ah. There we go.
19:55Obeel Zico from Oklahoma State.
19:58Talked about got a lot of additional playing time due to the injury to Colin Oliver,
20:02who I don't think we saw work out today.
20:04Get out of here.
20:05Let's run. Let's roll.
20:06Take off.
20:07Good. Take off.
20:08Bow. Get back. Get back.
20:09Good rep right there.
20:10Square round. Get down.
20:11Good. Bow.
20:13Bow. Get to me.
20:14Got to keep your eyes up.
20:15Yes, sir.
20:16Get going.
20:27Boy, I love the energy of this group down there on the field.
20:29Yeah, they're finishing.
20:30Can you feel them now?
20:30Bow.
20:31Vertical. Vertical. There we go.
20:32Bow. Get to me.
20:33Good exchange.
20:34Yeah.
20:34Good exchange.
20:35Ah. Out of there.
20:36Good job, baby.
20:37Moving around nicely.
20:39Up, up, up.
20:39Quick, quick, quick.
20:40Up, up, up.
20:43Here's Garmin Randolph, another guy who we really liked with some of the athletic testing.
20:47Look how long he is.
