00:00Well, hello Los Angeles! How are you? Thank you for being here.
00:04What a beautiful day outside that we could all spend together in this dark windowless room.
00:08That's what it's all about. We've got a great afternoon planned for you with the Lumineers.
00:15Yep, we're going to hang out, we're going to have a little chatty chat with Wesley Schultz.
00:19We're going to hear some great live music and then stick around afterwards
00:22because we've got a reception out there with some drinks, some food, so the party continues.
00:27How many of you are here because you won your tickets by listening to K-Rock? Anyone?
00:31Yeah, it works, huh?
00:33Who's here because they're sleeping with someone on the sales department?
00:36That's why I'm here.
00:38That was a very loud reaction.
00:39That is a loud grunt. That's what it sounds like when you sleep with the sales department.
00:43Alright, on that note, who's ready to meet the man behind the magic,
00:48responsible for so many amazing songs, memories, and I'm sure all of you that have names,
00:52you probably think the Lumineers are writing about you specifically.
00:55Please say hi to the great Wesley Schultz.
01:06Welcome, welcome.
01:07Thank you so much.
01:08Thank you for being here.
01:10We have to start with a bit of a mystery and only you can solve this mystery
01:14because on the new album, which by the way came out on Valentine's Day, guys, this is very exciting.
01:21You have a song where you mention a crime that we believe took place while you were last here at K-Rock.
01:27Can you confirm or deny? Because Allie has the lyrics of the song, same old song.
01:31She will read you. This is the evidence of the song.
01:34Do you mind if I read this first, Wesley?
01:36Yeah, like evidence, like Exhibit A.
01:38Exhibit A, that's right.
01:40In La Brea where the tarp hits black like a starving mouth for the innocent,
01:44you said the boulevard was not that bad and they jacked our van with the instruments.
01:49In broad daylight, they popped the trunk and left the keys behind.
01:52The cops pretend to care. I'll never see my mom's guitar again.
01:56Wesley, are we responsible for you losing your mom's guitar forever?
02:00I just want to point out, I kind of jacked Elton John's lyric in that also.
02:05The boulevard was not that bad. Thanks, Elton.
02:08That's the real crime here.
02:10Yes. Let's bring the plagiarism front and center.
02:15It was 2011, actually.
02:17So you guys wouldn't have played us back then, sadly.
02:21This really backfired on us.
02:24We're not good detectors.
02:26We would have loved to have been playing.
02:29We were filming, they would call it like a takeaway show,
02:34where you would show up and it was one take,
02:38so you couldn't edit and you couldn't fix anything.
02:42We went into La Brea Park by the Tar Pits.
02:45I think the only instrument we had was a mandolin,
02:48so we were playing that song, Classy Girls,
02:50and our friend was filming us.
02:53We came back to the minivan and it was like 3.30 in the afternoon.
02:57The trunk had been popped open with some sort of crude, whatever it was.
03:05Why am I not thinking of that name?
03:09Not even that. It wasn't even a crowbar.
03:11It was just a screwdriver. I don't know why I'm not...
03:14Anyway, we were just confused.
03:17We opened up the trunk and we're like,
03:19that's funny, where are the instruments?
03:21Because it's just daytime, you don't think.
03:23And it's a really busy street.
03:25They took everything, but they left the keys behind,
03:28meaning they left the keyboard, because that was too heavy for them.
03:32Too big. Too worthless.
03:34I wrote a lot of those songs on my mom's guitar that they took.
03:37Well, the crime has gotten a lot better in L.A. since then.
03:40We filled out a police report and on the top right,
03:43it has your number of the day of crime.
03:46We were like 1,472 of that.
03:49The cop was like, you're not going to see that again.
03:52It's nice when they're real with you.
03:54So please, no one steal their instruments while they're here with us today.
03:57Let's give them a positive experience.
03:59The other cool thing though, and I'm sorry to interrupt,
04:02but the rest of that tour, we had three more weeks to tour,
04:05and everyone along that tour lent us instruments.
04:08I remember one of the cities, the guy from the Four Non Blondes
04:12who played acoustic guitar gave us a guitar for that gig.
04:15Everywhere we went, with the cello, with guitars, with bass guitar.
04:19So it was like a really side of people that was so kind for the rest.
04:24And we were, again, nobodies. They weren't playing us.
04:26I don't know if I said that before.
04:28You made that very clear.
04:30When we last chatted, you were working on an album.
04:32This was, I believe, the album three,
04:34celebrating the third chapter of the career of the Lumineers.
04:37And you were in the process, when we talked to you,
04:39you were trying to get cell phone reception
04:40because you were in the middle of the woods attempting to build a studio
04:43so that you could basically sequester yourself
04:45and come up with the right vibe for the album.
04:47When you were working on this new album, do you still have to go do that?
04:50That seems like a lot of effort.
04:51I never ended up building the studio, thankfully.
04:54Really?
04:55We just ended up recording in someone else's studio.
04:58Smart.
04:59It would have been very stressful.
05:01I was in a yurt.
05:02I was probably talking to you in the yurt I have in the Catskills.
05:05And I've made a lot of demos there.
05:07And Jare and I have recorded out there.
05:09That's where we made our last four records,
05:11was out in the middle of nowhere.
05:13Was it ironically planned to have this album come out on Valentine's Day?
05:18Because you obviously know how to write a love song.
05:20You've written many successful ones.
05:22But this album, to me, seems like one of your darker albums.
05:25It's very autobiographical.
05:27I don't know what you're trying to say about it.
05:30You've got songs called Asshole and Ativan.
05:33There's some political stuff in there.
05:35You talk about getting your van jacked.
05:37Yeah.
05:38I guess I'm just a negative person.
05:40No, I'm kidding.
05:42We didn't put it out on purpose on Valentine's Day.
05:46But in our first music video for this album, on the same old song,
05:49Jare was drumming with roses that were attached to his sticks.
05:53And so we took a photo of that.
05:55And then people were like, is that a clue on Reddit?
05:57Because they were following some rabbit hole.
05:59And they were actually correct because it was coming out on Valentine's Day.
06:02No, we're not that well planned out.
06:06And thank you for saying I write love songs
06:08because I always feel like they're so sad.
06:10A lot of your songs have been used as people's songs at weddings and whatnot.
06:14But as somebody who's provided songs for many couples,
06:17do you and your wife have a song?
06:19And is it a Lumineer song?
06:21No.
06:26She walked down the aisle to Walls, a Tom Petty song that we covered.
06:30But we don't listen to our version.
06:31We listen to Tom Petty's version.
06:34But she co-wrote, technically, Dead Sea because she said,
06:39you're like my Dead Sea.
06:41And we were just dating at the time.
06:43And I was like, did you come up with that?
06:45Or is that?
06:46And she's like, yeah.
06:47And then on Valentine's Day, I actually gave her a demo of that.
06:51And I snuck it into a box of chocolates.
06:54I cut out a CD shape, put the CD in, and hid it in the box.
06:59But I did it to kind of roast her because she said she hates people
07:03that give boxes of chocolates as a gift.
07:06So we were apart.
07:07I was recording, and I sent it to her.
07:09And she didn't even open it.
07:10She was so mad.
07:11She doesn't listen to me.
07:12And I'm like, well, did you open it?
07:13She said, no.
07:14She turned around, opened it up, and she was crying.
07:16It was very sweet.
07:17What a romantic.
07:19Yeah, see, I'm not that dark.
07:21I did the same trick with the box of chocolates on my penis.
07:23And my wife thought that was totally unacceptable.
07:25But they were romantic.
07:27I want to talk about the song, Asshole, because you claim that people,
07:33when they first meet you, think that you're an asshole.
07:35What is it about you?
07:37You're not the same asshole.
07:38Yeah, you're a nice guy.
07:39Every time we've chatted, you've been super nice.
07:41What do you think makes you or makes someone come across like an asshole
07:43in first impression?
07:44It's just something people tell me every once in a while.
07:47Like my roommates in college, my wife, my brother.
07:51I think part of it is that I'm very honest, almost to a fault.
08:00And when I first meet people, I don't know how to switch that off.
08:04And so I might say what I really think about something.
08:07How does this interview go so far?
08:10I mean, it was going well to the dick in the box thing.
08:13I agree.
08:14See what I mean?
08:15Do you still like me?
08:16Of course.
08:18No, but it's more of like a, there's a lot of, I think, humor.
08:24For those of you who have listened to the new record,
08:26if you haven't, check it out.
08:28I think there's a lot more of a sense of humor about it
08:31because I was telling a lot of other people's stories
08:34in the previous albums, and I felt a lot more at liberty
08:38to make fun of myself in these songs.
08:40So like on same old song, it says,
08:42I don't know what's wrong with me.
08:44I killed the mood so naturally.
08:46You know, it's like, and later in the song, I think I'm vomiting.
08:49Like, you know, the party has been done for hours.
08:52I'm laying on the bathroom towel and spilling all my guts
08:54below the throne.
08:55The throne is the toilet.
08:58But I think there's like, it's okay to make fun of yourself.
09:00Like for me, I had a lot of, I was laughing out loud
09:03at a lot of the stuff we were writing,
09:04especially coming up with Asshole.
09:06Because I thought, you know, I can say that quite honestly,
09:09and it's not about someone else.
09:11So it was nice.
09:12You're obviously going to play some shows.
09:15You're doing another tour.
09:16And as somebody who's been on many tours,
09:19especially your first one, where you were, I think,
09:23playing several cities.
09:25You know, I think you played South Carolina
09:26like three different times, and you didn't really
09:28have places to sleep.
09:30Thinking back to that first tour,
09:31what were some of the weirdest places you slept in?
09:34Because I heard you were sleeping at the houses of fans
09:37and air mattresses and all kinds of weird places.
09:39Yeah, I was on the doorstep of 30
09:42sleeping on an air mattress.
09:44It was grim, you know.
09:46But Stealth, who's going to come up and play piano
09:49just a little bit with me, he was key to staying
09:53in some of the weirdest houses I've ever stayed in.
09:56No electricity sometimes, no running water.
09:58There was a guy named Badger I remember waking up,
10:00and he's like, hi, I'm Badger.
10:02And I'm like, I'm not staying.
10:03Like, I don't want to stay here.
10:06And we stayed in a place that was called,
10:10they called it a living museum or something,
10:12and they didn't have heat at night.
10:14And there was a lot more to that story
10:17that I can't really go into, but it was a lot of good,
10:22I remember staying at fans' houses in Reno,
10:24and they cooked everything they had in their freezer.
10:27This guy's like, you never heard of corndog?
10:30I'm like, no, he just cooked corndogs.
10:32Everything was being made for us
10:35in the middle of the night, and we're like,
10:36this guy's the nicest guy.
10:38Now that you're so successful, have any of these people
10:40reached out to you and said, hey,
10:41I'll let you sleep on my couch for two weeks?
10:43Sometimes, yeah.
10:44I still have the same number, so every time I'm like,
10:47it's corndog guy.
10:48Yeah, corndog.
10:50I get it, I know.
10:52You owe me, man.
10:53I'm like, I do, I actually do, yeah.
10:55But at the beginning, when things were hard,
10:57I mean, it took you guys a while to come out
10:59with a hit song.
11:02I think you said you were almost 30,
11:04and was there ever a time leading up
11:06that you were like, man, how do I stay in the game?
11:09What if I decide to just be a bartender?
11:12Did you ever have a moment like that,
11:14and how did you talk yourself through that experience?
11:16Yeah, so I had a friend who was interning
11:19at Island Def Jam, meaning he just listened
11:23to music all day long, and then his only job
11:26was to pass it on to someone above him
11:29who would then listen to those and pass
11:31what he liked on, and it kind of went up the chain.
11:33And he's like, we have a policy that if anybody's
11:36like 28 or older, we don't listen to their music.
11:39And I had just turned like 29, I was like, uh.
11:42So I do remember thinking like,
11:48I don't know how this is gonna work out.
11:50And I left New York to go to Denver
11:53because I was a bartender one of the nights a week,
11:57and then I was a barista.
12:00And I just did everything I could
12:03in the service industry to make it work,
12:06and then I had this realization that I was getting
12:08way better at making drinks than making music.
12:10I was spending all my time just trying
12:12to make the rent in New York, so it brought me
12:14out to Denver just because I had no time
12:16for anything else, which I'm sure is a predicament
12:19for actors in L.A., but in music,
12:21you can do it wherever.
12:23So the blessing of all that was that
12:26when I moved to Denver,
12:30you can't like tour around Denver that easily,
12:32so I had to go out to each coast.
12:34So our first tour was like in a minivan,
12:36we rented one of the smallest U-Haul trailer they offer,
12:39and took that up the West Coast,
12:42across the country, down the East Coast,
12:44and back in a month.
12:46And I saw my brother at the tail end,
12:50my little brother, I went to his college
12:52and we played his living room.
12:54And I remember all his friends had gone
12:56to the LCD Sound System Show,
12:58and they all came back, and we're like,
13:00we had already played our entire set,
13:02and we're like, let's play again.
13:04Because now there's a crowd, and we played a whole other set.
13:06It was just, it was so great,
13:09and we got so much out of it, and it was odd,
13:11you'd think that it'd be the most exhausting thing ever,
13:14but it fed us in this really great way.
13:17So in that way, it was like sort of all
13:20a happy accident, a lot of this.
13:22We enjoyed writing songs, and the rest followed.
13:24Well, if you want to bartend again,
13:26we have a little thing happening after this.
13:28We've got space behind the bar, you can be our guest bartender.
13:30Automatic is out now, it is the album, of course,
13:32from the Lumineers, we're going to hear some of the songs
13:34in a few moments. We don't want to hog all of your time though,
13:36so we did ask your fans for questions,
13:38and we do have a couple of fan questions.
13:40Rapid Fire style, Ali, give them question number one.
13:43Alright, this comes from Eric in Northridge.
13:45Between you and Jeremiah, how many hats are packed
13:47for any given tour?
13:49He only really has one in a backup, I'm guessing.
13:52He's been wearing that fedora for 20 years.
13:55It's the same one? I always thought it was a new one.
13:57No, it's not the same. He loses a lot of things.
13:59It's not the same one, but it has been the same one
14:02for like the same style forever.
14:05He has like 50 pairs of everything he has,
14:07because he loses stuff sometimes.
14:10I have, yeah, I've got like 10 hats on me,
14:13but they're mostly these now, so they're easier to pack.
14:17Trista DDS, a dentist, wanted to know,
14:19have you ever been sued or wanted to sue
14:21Lumineers, the dental veneers?
14:25No, I thought we'd have to totally get rid of the name,
14:29because I was made aware that there was a dental veneer company.
14:32Like, full disclosure, we were playing an open mic
14:36in Jersey City in 2007.
14:38This guy just was like, up next, the Lumineers,
14:41and we weren't the Lumineers, we were Wesley Jeremiah.
14:44And we were like, that sounds cool, that's a good name.
14:47And then that band broke up.
14:50They were like an instrumental band, and they broke up.
14:53And so we were like, I think we might jack that name.
14:58Because we were trying to think of names,
15:00and we had the worst names humanly possible.
15:03Free beer was a good name.
15:04It was a bad name, yeah, it's misleading, trust me.
15:09Anyway, no, I would not sue them,
15:13and I didn't want to be sued by them.
15:14And somehow, because they're unrelated, they couldn't sue us.
15:19But they do pay a lot of money to come up in the search, I've heard.
15:22Oh, you guys?
15:24Yeah, they have to pay extra so that they populate the search.
15:28It's crazy.
15:29Sorry, guys.
15:31You have a new song called Ativan.
15:33If Ativan called and asked you to be the official song
15:36in their commercial, would you say yes?
15:38Yes, yes.
15:40Final question, and then we will get ready for some live music here at KROQ.
15:44Band swap question from Sean D.
15:46If you could join any other band for a night or a mini tour,
15:49which band would you want to take the leads or guitar in?
15:56There's a lot of bands I love watching live.
15:59I'm trying to think.
16:00One time, hmm, does that have to be Still Playing?
16:05Growing up, I loved Led Zeppelin a lot.
16:08That would be amazing.
16:10A more modern band, I would say.
16:12I saw Phoenix a few times, and they had two drummers,
16:16and it was just so much energy.
16:19So I was just watching them going,
16:22man, I wish we had two drummers, more energy,
16:27and less negative songs, but no.
16:31Who's ready for some live music?
16:33All right.
16:34Wesley Schultz-Bloominairs, thank you so much for all the songs,
16:37all the albums, Automatic.
16:38Good news, they're back in August to play a big show in L.A.,
16:41which will be very exciting.
16:42There's a tour rolls through here.
16:43We can't wait.
16:44And just in a few moments, we'll be back on stage
16:46to bring them out for some live music.
16:48Thanks for being here.
16:49Thanks, guys.
16:54The moment that you've actually been waiting for.
16:56We're going to do that interview all over again.
16:58No, that's not true.
16:59Get ready for the one and only Bloomin' Ears!
17:18We're back.
17:22How are you guys doing?
17:23Good.
17:24How are you guys doing?
17:25Good.
17:29Well, this is what we do much better than interviews.
17:32So thank you for sitting through my ramblings.
17:36We're going to play some old ones and some new ones.
17:38To warm up, we're going to play an older one.
17:41This is called Cleopatra.
17:43And on stage joining me is Byron Isaacs,
17:46amazing, amazing bass player and singer.
17:49And Mr. Stealth Oven, he never wears shoes.
17:51He's the guy who introduced me to Badger from earlier.
17:56You ready?
18:08I was Cleopatra
18:11I was young and an actress
18:14When you knelt by my mattress
18:17And asked for my hand
18:21I was sad that you asked it
18:24As I laid in a black dress
18:27With my father in a casket
18:30I had no plans
18:34Yeah
18:41And I left the footprints
18:44The mud stained on the carpet
18:47And they hardened like my heart did
18:50When you left town
18:54But I must admit it
18:57That I would marry you in an instant
19:00So damn your wife, I'd be your mistress
19:03Just to have you around
19:07But I was late for this
19:09Late for that
19:11Late for the love of my life
19:14And when I die alone
19:16I'll die alone
19:18I'll die of the old time
19:21Ah
19:29While the church discouraged
19:32Any lust that burned within me
19:35Yes, my flesh, it was not currency
19:38But I am true
19:42So I drive the taxi
19:45And the traffic distracts me
19:48From the strangers in my backseat
19:51They remind me of you
19:55But I was late for this
19:57Late for that
19:59Late for the love of my life
20:01And when I die alone
20:03I'll die alone
20:05I'll die of the old time
20:10The only gifts from my Lord
20:13Were a birth and a divorce
20:17But I've read this script
20:19And the costume fits
20:21So I'll play my part
20:29I was clean, a patchwork
20:32I was taller than the rafters
20:35But that's all in the past
20:38I've gone with the wind
20:41Now a nurse in white shoes
20:45Leads me back to my guest room
20:48It's a bare, bare room
20:56And a place for the old
21:00But I won't be late for this
21:03Late for that
21:05Late for the love of my life
21:08And when I die alone
21:10When I die alone
21:12I'll die of the old time
21:15Ah
21:18applause
21:29Please welcome to the stage
21:31Mr. Derek Brown on the drum.
21:33applause
21:38So this is the first single
21:40off our new album.
21:41It's called Same Old Song.
21:43We call it S.O.S.
21:45Here we go.
21:48drums play
21:54Hey mama, would you pay my rent
21:57Would you let me crash in your basement
22:00Cause any one of us could make it big
22:03Or could end up dead on the pavement
22:06And if I was to die
22:09If the plane went down and you survived
22:15You ever wonder what your parents meant
22:18When they told you grandma's in heaven
22:21Cause I don't feel it like I did back then
22:24In a black sedan of depression
22:27And everyone's alright
22:30But I cannot afford to see the light
22:36I don't know what's wrong with me
22:39I killed the mood so naturally
22:42The guests begin to make me feel alone
22:48Same old song
22:52We sing the same old song
22:58We sing the same old
23:02Same sad song
23:08In La Brea where the tar pit's black
23:11Like a starving mouth for the innocent
23:14You said the boulevard was not that bad
23:17Then they jacked our van with the instruments
23:20In the broad daylight
23:23They popped the trunk and left the keys behind
23:28All the cops pretend to care
23:31I'll never see my mom's guitar again
23:37I don't know what's wrong with me
23:40I killed the mood so naturally
23:43The guests begin to make me feel alone
23:49The party has been done for hours
23:52I'm laying on the bathroom tile
23:55Spilling all my guts below the throne
24:01Same old song
24:05We sing the same old song
24:11We sing the same old
24:16Same sad song
24:22Same old song
24:27We sing the same old song
24:32We sing the same old
24:37Same sad song
24:57guitar solo
25:14I could see it in the air
25:17Every word was like smoke from a cigarette
25:21You were blowin' in your hair
25:24The heater broke and the ozmo beat
25:27And the light in your eyes
25:34Alone on the freeway
25:42I was stranded in the bed
25:45You were listenin' to the dark side of the moon
25:49I could barely see your eyes
25:52Psilocybin in a hotel room
25:55And the light in your eyes
26:02The waves on the ceiling
26:08I'll be your bright side baby tonight
26:15I'll be your bright side baby tonight
26:20Tonight
26:23You were tired of Tacoma
26:26I was tired of believin' we were right
26:30Losin' every other friend
26:33Findin' nothin' in the afterlife
26:36But the light in your eyes
26:43Alone on the freeway
26:48I'll be your bright side baby tonight
26:56I'll be your bright side baby tonight
27:02Tonight
27:04You're stranded on a bridge
27:07You're cryin' for your kids
27:10I'll be your bright side baby tonight
27:15Tonight
27:17Tonight
27:24I could see it in the air
27:27Every word was like smoke from a cigarette
27:31Sun is comin' up ahead
27:34Get your crack in the windshield
27:37Shinin' the light in your eyes
27:45Alone on the freeway
27:50I'll be your bright side baby tonight
27:57I'll be your bright side baby tonight
28:03Tonight
28:05You're stranded on a bridge
28:08The cops are closin' in
28:11I'll be your bright side baby tonight
28:16Tonight
28:18Tonight
28:41Alright, this next one's a new one.
28:42This is called You're All I Got.
28:44Have fun doing it.
29:01Count the blows we took it like a champ
29:05All the years we walked it hand in hand
29:11Sighin' means it's hard to breathe
29:17Twenty years of no gives a damn
29:23Let the light come down on me
29:30Let the light come down on me
29:36Feelin' born and runnin' from shame
29:43Livin' for the love of yesterday
29:51Stretched limousines
29:55Pull the cord and flush it down the drain
30:00Pull the cord and flush it down the drain
30:05Let the light come down on me
30:11Let the light come down on me
30:24You're all I got
30:30You're all that I got
30:36There's no stretchin' that ain't goin' away
30:43Will we ever make it back to base?
30:49Frozen hands shakin' in the band aid
30:55Blame yourself for what you did yourself
31:01Let the light come down on me
31:07Let the light come down on me
31:14You're all I got
31:20You're all that I got
31:25I can't give it up
31:27Feelin' all the holes in us
31:33You're all that I got
31:39You're all I got
31:45You're all that I got
31:50I can't give it up
31:52I can't give it up
31:54Like Chesapeake's been overrun
32:00You're all that I got
32:07applause

33:20Automatic
33:23It's automatic

33:30Take your victory lap
33:34Running on an empty track
33:37The circle always brings you back
33:41Keep it in
33:44And the nursery rhymes
33:47You learn when you were only 5
33:50They're darker than the dead of night
33:53We sing them just the same
33:59Oh lover, is it ever gonna be enough
34:02Oh my lover, is it ever gonna be enough
34:05Oh my lover, is it ever gonna be enough

36:38Don't feel nothin' bad
36:43Nothin' bad
36:52I, I, got a new girlfriend
36:58Feels like he's on top
37:04And I don't feel no remorse
37:10You can't see past my blood
37:17Oh, Ophelia
37:20You've been on my mind ever since the flood
37:24Oh, Ophelia
37:26Heaven help you from when you fall in love

40:44Why'd you never bother to find it
40:50Like I did
40:56Seen in isolation all the time
40:59I'll be on the ocean in your eyes
41:02Tell it on the mountain he's arrived
41:05Everybody's famous for a while
41:08So long
41:14So long
41:19Flies are on the food
41:22Sleeping with your shoes on the sofa
41:31Lies down in the day

41:43And if you ever felt the presence
41:47Would you ever let it control you
