00:00In Argentina, lawyers filed a complaint before the justice system against President Javier
00:18Milley for his involvement in the Libra cryptocurrency scam.
00:25In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the national government confirms the entry
00:29of M23 rebels and the Rwandan allies into key territories in north and south Kivu.
00:38And Russia and the United States agreed on the need to resume talks and address the situation
00:42in Ukraine and the Middle East.
00:54From the south, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:58We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:17Argentina's justice system has confirmed the reception of criminal complaints against
01:21the nation's president Javier Milley, accusing him of being part of a cryptocurrency scam
01:27that has become a global scandal.
01:29The economist Claudio Lozano has filed the first formal complaint, although it will not
01:35be the only one, against the move in which the ultra-liberal president promoted a cryptocurrency
01:41that then crashed.
01:42While Mariano Llorens, president of the Argentinian court, ordered the appointment of a judge
01:48to the case, the complaints filed before foreign law firms already exceeded the 100.
01:54This happens as rumors spread regarding the current situation of the head of state, which
01:59is said to have locked himself up at the presidential residency.
02:15The
02:37union's defense also denounced the absence of separation of powers and warranties for
02:43workers and accused the country's president, José Raúl Molina, of directing the whole
02:47operation.
02:48They also denounced the move as a political trial that undermines the rule of law in the
02:53country.
03:03We have to be prepared for the worst.
03:05We have to fight until the end, otherwise, as things are going, the court will surely
03:11order the provisional detention of these 83 comrades.
03:16So I ask you to remain united, to be strong, because we have to continue this struggle
03:21which seems to be long.
03:25But based on the law we will do our best to get our comrades free, remember that this
03:29is a political trial.
03:33In the context of the 83 Panamanian workers arrested, the General Secretary of the Sun
03:39Trade Union, Saúl Méndez, called for massive mobilizations on Thursday, February 20.
03:46The prosecution has not managed to present its charges yet, Mielino's charges, because
03:51Mielino is behind all this.
03:53And neither has the false guarantee judge allowed an impartial process.
03:57She is biased.
03:58She even intervenes in the process as a party, giving advice to the prosecution.
04:02So what is the right thing to do?
04:03It is necessary to continue resisting.
04:06To mobilize in the streets with the people, this Thursday 20, is decisive.
04:10The construction workers will continue mobilizing in the streets.
04:13The social organizations, the peasants, the indigenous people, the education workers,
04:18etc., have announced their mobilization.to defend the social security and to demand the
04:23freedom of the political prisoners.
04:25Because these are political prisoners?
04:26These are not common criminals like the ones in the presidential palace.
04:31In Colombia's Catatumbo region, thousands of residents face a humanitarian crisis which
04:36has worsened in recent days by the violence generated by armed groups.
04:40The most affected population in the region are the indigenous communities, since they
04:44live in areas at risk of the violence caused by the armed conflict, which began on January
04:5016, 2025.
04:51Local authorities reported that despite the efforts of the municipal governments, the
04:56mayor's office has been overwhelmed by the displaced and their financial resources, depleted
05:02by the magnitude of the crisis.
05:04To date, more than 100 people have been killed by armed groups in the Department of Northern
05:09Santander and adjacent areas, while another 85,000 have been affected.
05:24On Sunday, a soldier of the Haitian Armed Forces and two officers of the 40th Protected
05:30Air Security Brigade were killed after an attack by members of armed criminal groups
05:34in the municipality of Kenscoff.
05:37During this new attack, houses were set on fire and the national police arrested members
05:42of the armed group.
05:43The spokesman of the police force, Lionel Lazaret, reported that new law enforcement
05:49personnel have already regained control of the area where the radio antennas are located
05:54in the metropolitan region of the Haitian capital.
05:57Armed groups want to gain control of the area in order to take off the air some media outlets
06:03that are hostile to them and to extort money from the owners.
06:16The government of Mexico announced Monday upcoming meetings with the United States to
06:20address issues related to security and trade.
06:23The information was provided by the nation's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, during her daily
06:28morning press conference, where she explained that the meetings seek to eradicate drug trafficking
06:33and high-powered weapons on the border with the United States.
06:37Sheinbaum highlighted her government's efforts to combat organized crime and informed that
06:42a methamphetamine laboratory had been dismantled in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.
06:48The president indicated that the upcoming meeting with U.S. officials will deal with
06:53the imposition of tariffs by the White House and the effectiveness of the U.S. initiatives
06:58against her country.
07:15A 5.1 magnitude earthquake was registered during the early hours of Monday in the state
07:20of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
07:23The epicenter of the quake was located in Yuchistan de Zaragoza and was reported a few
07:28minutes after midnight.
07:30So far, no fatalities, injuries or damage to structures have been reported.
07:34The Mexican seismic alert system explained that the alarm did not go off because the
07:39earth's movement had not been intense enough.
07:54On Monday, Chilean authorities ordered the closure of national parks in the Los Lagos
07:58region, which are threatened by forest fires spreading from neighboring Argentina.
08:03The fire started in the Rio Negro province and could reach Chile during this day due
08:08to strong wind.
08:09Authorities began to organize an emergency plan for the eventual containment of the flames.
08:15Chile's National Forest Corporation informed that the fire could enter through Cochemo,
08:21a border town in the south of Chile, which stands out for its vegetation, natural landscapes,
08:27camping sites and tourist areas.
08:29The fire started on January 30 in Argentina and has already consumed more than 4,000 hectares
08:35of vegetation.
08:45Severe storms, including tornadoes, have unleashed devastating flooding across the southeastern
08:51United States, resulting in at least nine fatalities, eight in Kentucky and one in Georgia.
08:56Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear described the event as one of the most severe weather incidents
09:02in the past decade, prompting him to declare a state of emergency.
09:06The storms left over 39,000 homes without power across the state, affecting residents'
09:11ability to seek safety and assistance.
09:14All 120 counties in Kentucky reported significant flooding, with some areas receiving between
09:20three to eight inches of rain.
09:23Emergency teams have conducted over 1,000 rescues as they respond to the crisis.
09:29The situation is particularly dire in eastern Kentucky, which is still recovering from
09:34devastating floods in 2022.
09:42And now we have a short break coming up, but remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUS
09:46or English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
09:50We'll be right back, stay with us.
10:00Welcome back to From the South.
10:12In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, insecurity worsens in the east.
10:16The national government confirms the entry of M23 rebels and the Rwandan allies into
10:21key territories in north and south Kivu.
10:24An official government statement did not clarify if the rebels remain in the invaded
10:28areas.
10:29It only said that they are observing the situation.
10:33M23 leaders confirmed that they are in control of cities such as Goma and large areas of
10:38north and south Kivu.
10:40Over a million people are said to be under M23 control, although large waves of Congolese
10:45have moved to neighbouring nations.
10:48Domestic observers fear the breakup of the African nation.
10:54We are getting customers because there aren't many taxis or vehicles.
11:06We are told it is because fuel stations are closed.
11:10We are still using the fuel reserve that we have.
11:15We are not afraid now, but the fear is still there, but we see the people moving about
11:19little by little.
11:22Togo's Electoral Commission has announced the provisional results of the senatorial
11:29elections, giving the ruling party 31 of the 54 seats.
11:34Dago Yabre, president of the National Independent Electoral Commission, said that 1,723 of the
11:411,949 municipal and regional councillors eligible to vote had done so.
11:49These elections mark the final stage in the drafting of a new constitution, promoted by
11:54the current president Faure Gansigme and largely boycotted by the opposition, which criticises
12:00the changes, that this new constitution could allow the president to circumvent term limits.
12:20Israel sent government representatives to Cairo, Egypt, to discuss the second phase
12:30of negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
12:33Israeli media said that the Egyptian government will mediate between Hamas and Tel Aviv to
12:38deal with the hostage exchange.
12:40They also detailed that after the meeting, Cairo will receive the new directives from
12:45the Israeli side to negotiate the second agreement.
12:48Since the ceasefire came into effect, dozens of Palestinians were released, while Hamas
12:53released 70 of the 251 Israeli hostages.
13:03The Hand Rajab Foundation, HRF, a legal arm of the March 30th movement, has filed a complaint
13:10with the international criminal court, ICC, against Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
13:16The Foundation accuses Saar of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection
13:21with Israel's military actions in Gaza since October 7th, 2023, alleging that he is complicit
13:27with Prime Minister Netanyahu in the mass displacement, starvation and persecution of
13:32Palestine.
13:34With Saar's planned visit to Brussels on February 18th, the HRF urges Belgium to stop him and
13:40cooperate with the ICC, citing Belgium's obligations as a signatory to the Rome Statute.
13:47The HRF is named after Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli forces.
14:00The Arab League has condemned Israel's delays in withdrawing its forces from Lebanon.
14:05In a statement, Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gade warned that any postponement would be
14:10a deliberate call for a crisis.
14:13He stressed that the withdrawal must be completed and on the agreed date.
14:17He urged parties who aren't in the agreement to pressure Israel to fulfill its promise
14:22and leave southern Lebanon on a schedule.
14:25Israel was forced to accept a ceasefire with Hezbollah on November 27th after suffering
14:29losses and failing to achieve its objectives, despite killing over 4,000 people in Lebanon.
14:36The 60-day truce was extended for three weeks until February 18th, after Israeli troops
14:42messed up with the withdrawal deadline.
15:12Welcome back to From the South.
15:23The government of Russia and the United States agreed on the need to resume talks, resolve
15:28the differences and address the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
15:32Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke on Monday about the telephone conversation
15:36between President Vladimir Putin and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, during which the
15:42two presidents stressed the need to put behind them a period of bilateral relations that
15:46has been described as anomalous.
15:49In this context, the Kremlin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that this Tuesday the first talks
15:54with the U.S. representatives will take place in Saudi Arabia, where they will discuss possible
15:59negotiations.
16:11Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky had already announced his decision not to attend
16:16the meeting.
16:17He made it clear that he demands European involvement and does not want to enter into
16:21negotiations before determining what security warranties the United States and its allies
16:27are prepared to offer to ensure that the ceasefire is not violated.
16:32The Ukrainian president has also stated that he will not accept a negotiated peace between
16:37Russia and the U.S.
16:46In this context, the U.S. Congress ramps up pressure on Ukraine over military aid payments.
16:51Congressmen warned that Ukraine is expected to repay the investments made in the Ukrainian
16:56conflict so that the U.S. can guarantee the continuity of assistance in the future.
17:02They also said that the decision came after the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky refused
17:06to sign a document granting the United States a right to 50 percent of his country's future
17:11mineral reserves in search of a better deal.
17:15Congressmen stressed that the U.S. citizens deserve to be compensated and deserve to receive
17:20some kind of compensation for the billions that have been invested in the war.
17:30Meanwhile, the British Prime Minister says he is prepared to send troops to Kyiv.
17:37The British proposal aims to protect the security of its territory and the whole of Europe,
17:43according to Prime Minister Kate Starmer.
17:44The decision taken at the White House and accepted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr
17:49Zelensky seems to have taken not only London by surprise, but also all the leaders of the
17:55European bloc.
17:57According to Starmer's latest statement, security has become the great challenge and is emerging
18:01as a crucial topic of the meeting to be held this Monday in the French capital, Paris.
18:12And Spain said Monday it was too soon to discuss sending its troops to war-torn Ukraine as
18:17part of any potential peacekeeping force, after Britain declared it was ready for such
18:22a move.
18:24It is too soon at the moment to talk about deploying troops in Ukraine.
18:30There is no peace at the moment and the effort has to be to achieve it as soon as possible,
18:34making it clear that we, Europeans, have always wanted peace.
18:39Whenever there is talk of any kind of deployment of forces, we have to consider what the mission
18:43is, who can make it up, under what flag, with what mandate.
18:47So it is legitimate to have this debate in these moments if it brings us closer to peace.
18:52For having a serious debate on that, there are still a lot of hypotheses and the first
18:56one is when we will be able to truly talk about a fair and durable peace.
19:02In Germany, the 66th Munich Security Conference closed on a sore note for Europeans.
19:08Forum Chairman Christoph Hussegin described it as a nightmare for Europe and closed the
19:13conference in tears.
19:15The presence of the U.S. Vice President James Devance especially upset the Germans.
19:20Both Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck condemned the U.S. support for
19:26pro-Nazi parties and organizations in Germany.
19:30The president of the Munich conference went forward and said that the Trump administration
19:34lives on a different planet and assured that after Devance's conference, the forum may
19:39no longer be a transatlantic initiative because there are no longer common values between
19:44Europe and the United States.
19:51Veterans of the German anti-fascist movement, the Omas Gegen Recht, or Grannies against
19:58the Right, have ramped up their demonstration ahead of a federal election on February 23rd.
20:05The actions come as polls show the far-right AfD party had a record 20% or higher.
20:12Most of the group's members either have early childhood memories of Nazi Germany or grew
20:18up amid the rubble of the devastated and shamed country now determined to warn younger
20:24generations of the dangers of political extremism.
20:27The Omas movement has become a force to be reckoned with.
20:32A right-wing extremist is on the rise again.
20:42I hope that everyone will vote for a democratic party on the 23rd.
20:48But I also find it very important to criticize the democratic parties.
20:58So, it's really difficult.
21:02But one party is definitely not allowed to get the vote and that is the one, this right-wing
21:07extremist AfD, I can't even name it.
21:12The Grannies against the Right are actually very important.
21:14They are older people, some of whom probably lived up to the 1945 period themselves.
21:19Some of them are really very old.
21:21And they simply stand up for human rights, against racism, against discrimination, against
21:25hatred.
21:27And I think that's very important and very supportive.
21:31And with this information, we have come to the end of this news brief, but you can find
21:35this and many of the stories on our website at telecelenglish.net and join us on social
21:40media, we are on Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and TikTok as well.
