*Moscow and Washington to resume talks
Transcript
00:00In Argentina, Lourdes filed complaints before the justice system against President Javier
00:13Milley for his involvement in the Libra cryptocurrency scam.
00:18In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the national government confirms the entry of
00:24M-23 rebels and Rwandan allies into key territories in North and South Kibbu.
00:32Russia and the United States agreed on the need to resume talks and address the situations
00:36in Ukraine and the Middle East.
00:43Hello welcome from the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesus Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:49We begin with the news.
00:50Argentina's justice system confirmed the reception of criminal complaints against the nation's
00:55president Javier Milley, accusing him of being part of a cryptocurrency scam that has become
01:00a global scandal.
01:01The economist Claudio Lozano has filed the first formal complaint, although would not
01:05be the only one, against the move in which the ultra-liberal president promoted a cryptocurrency
01:11that then crashed.
01:12While Mariano Llorenz, president of the Argentinean court, ordered the appointment of a judge
01:18to the case, the complaints filed by foreign law firms already exceed 100.
01:23This happens as rumors spread regarding the current situation of the head of state, which
01:27is said to have locked himself up in the presidential residency.
01:37And the defense for the single national union of the construction and similar industries
01:41of Panama accused the nation's government of endorsing abuses and violations against
01:46the members of the union arrested after protesting for their rights.
01:50The 83 workers were provisionally detained after the violent intervention of the police
01:54in a demonstration they held against the bill to reform the social security fund.
01:59The union's defense also denounced the absence of separation of powers and guarantees for
02:04workers and accused the country's president, José Raúl Molino, of directing the whole
02:09operation.
02:10They also denounced the move as a political trial that undermines the rule of law in the
02:13country.
02:23We have to be prepared for the worst, we have to fight until the end, otherwise, as things
02:29are going, the court will surely order the provisional detention of these 83 comrades.
02:36So I ask you to remain united, to be strong, because we have to continue this struggle
02:41which seems to be long.
02:45But based on the law we will do our best to get our comrades free, remember that this
02:49is a political trial.
02:51In this context, the General Secretary of Soundtracks Trade Union, Salo Mendes, called
02:57for massive mobilizations on Thursday.
03:05The prosecution has not managed to present its charges yet, Milino's charges, because
03:09Milino is behind all this, and neither has the false guarantee judge allowed an impartial
03:17process.
03:23She is biased, she even intervenes in the process as a party, giving advice to the prosecution,
03:31so what is the right thing to do?
03:36It is necessary to continue resisting, to mobilize in the streets with the people, this
03:41Thursday 20th is decisive.
03:47In Colombia's Catatumbo region, thousands of residents face a humanitarian crisis which
03:51has worsened in recent days by the violence generated by armed groups.
03:55The most affected population in the region are the indigenous communities, since they
03:58live in areas at risk of violence caused by the armed conflict, which began on January
04:0316, 2025.
04:05Local authorities report that despite the efforts of the municipal governments, the
04:09mayor's office has been overwhelmed by the displaced and their financial resources depleted
04:14by the magnitude of the crisis.
04:16Today, more than 100 people have been killed by armed groups in the Department of Northern
04:20Santander and adjacent areas, while another 85,000 have been affected.
04:32And on Sunday, a soldier of the Haitian forces and two officers of the security brigade were
04:38killed after an attack by members of armed criminal groups in the municipality of Kenscoff.
04:44During the new attack, houses were set on fire and the national police arrested members
04:47of the armed group.
04:48A spokesman of the police force, Lionel Lazar, reported that law enforcement personnel have
04:55already regained control of the area where the radio antennas are located in the metropolitan
05:00region of the Haitian capital.
05:02Armed groups want to gain control of the area in order to take off the air some media
05:07outlets that are hostile to them and to extort money from the owners.
05:31A 5.1 magnitude earthquake was registered during the early hours of Monday in the state
05:35of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
05:38The epicenter of the quake was located in Yucitán de Zaragoza and was reported a few
05:43minutes after midnight.
05:45So far, no fatalities, injuries or damage to structures have been reported.
05:49The Mexican seismic alert system explained that the alarm did not go off because the
05:54earth movement had not been intense enough.
06:04And severe storms, including volcanoes, have unleashed a devastating flooding across the
06:09southeastern United States, resulting in at least nine fatalities, eight in Kentucky and
06:14one in Georgia.
06:15Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear described the event as one of the most severe weather incidents
06:21in the past decade, prompting him to declare a state of emergency.
06:25The storms left over 39,000 homes without power across the state, affecting residents'
06:30ability to seek safety and assistance.
06:33All 120 counties in Kentucky reported significant flooding, with some areas receiving between
06:38three to eight inches of rain.
06:41Emergency teams have conducted over a thousand rescues as they respond to the crisis.
06:45The situation is particularly dire in eastern Kentucky, which is still recovering from devastating
06:51floods in 2022.

07:21Welcome back.
07:28In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, insecurity worsens in the east.
07:31The national government confirms the entry of M23 rebels and their Rwandan allies into
07:35key territories in North and South Kipu.
07:38An official government statement did not clarify if the rebels remain in the invaded areas.
07:45It only said that they are observing the situation.
07:48M23 leaders confirmed that they are in control of the cities such as Goma and large areas
07:53of North and South Kipu.
07:55Over a million people are said to be under M23 control, though large waves of Congolese
08:00have moved to neighboring nations.
08:02Domestic observers fear the breakup of the African nation.
08:07We are getting customers because there aren't many taxis or vehicles.
08:14We are told it is because fuel stations are closed.
08:18We are still using the fuel reserve that we have.
08:23We are not afraid now, but the fear is still there, but we see the people moving about
08:28little by little.
08:31Antogo's Electoral Commission has announced the provisional results of the senatorial
08:35elections, giving the ruling party 31 of the 54 seats.
08:39Dago Yaper, president of the National Independent Electoral Commission, said that 1,723 of the
08:451,949 municipal and regional councillors eligible to vote had done so.
08:50These elections mark the final stage of the presidential election.
08:541,949 municipal and regional councillors eligible to vote had done so.
08:58These elections mark the final stage in the drafting of a new constitution promoted by
09:02the current president Faure Ndiangbe, and largely boycotted by the opposition, which
09:07criticizes the changes, that this new constitution could allow the president to circumvent term limits.
09:14And the African Union's Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole
09:18Addoai, warned of possible break-up of the Democratic Republic of Congo after the M23
09:23armed group entered the city of Bukabu.
09:26These statements were made at a press conference on the sidelines of the AU summit in the Ethiopian
09:31capital, Addis Ababa, after columns of M23 fighters allied with the M23 armed group were
09:38entered the center and another city, a key city in the Eastern Democratic Republic of
09:43the Congo on Sunday.
09:44With fears that the offensive could ignite a regional war, the international community
09:48has multiplied calls for a de-escalation and ceasefire, so far in vain.
09:52It must be noted that the conflict with M23 has lasted more than three years.
09:57We are expressing grave concern, that is what our leaders did, on the situation in Eastern
10:04DRC.
10:05Calling for immediate withdrawal of M23 and their supporters from all occupied towns and
10:13cities and cities and towns and cities.
10:16We are calling for immediate withdrawal of M23 and their supporters from all occupied
10:24towns and cities, including Goma Airport.
10:29We also express concern that this escalation, this new escalation, should not become an
10:37open conflict that would destruct and impact on humanitarian activities and the already
10:46very weakened social fabric in the region.
10:53Also in Ethiopia, the 38th AU Summit adopted the Convention of Unending Violence Against
10:58Women and Girls, becoming the first comprehensive continental instrument of its kind to address
11:03such actions.
11:04The document establishes a comprehensive and legally binding framework for the prevention,
11:09elimination and effective response to all forms of violence against women and girls
11:13in Africa.
11:14This legal and social victory addresses the root causes and drivers of such violence,
11:19strengthening legal and institutional mechanisms and promoting a culture of respect for human
11:24rights, gender equality and dignity, ensuring that African Union Member States reinforce
11:29a common approach to eliminating such violence.
11:49The Hind Rajab Foundation, a legal arm of the Umayyad 30th Movement, has filed a complaint
11:59with the International Criminal Court against Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
12:04The Foundation accuses Saar of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection
12:08with Israel's military actions in Gaza since October 7, 2023, alleging that he is complicit
12:14with Prime Minister Netanyahu in the mass displacement, starvation and persecution of Palestine.
12:19With Saar's planned visit to Brussels on February 18, the HRF urges Belgium to stop him and
12:27cooperate with the ICC, citing Belgium's obligations as a signatory to the Rome Statute.
12:33The HRF is named after Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli forces.
12:45And the Arab League has condemned Israel's delays in withdrawing from southern Lebanon.
12:50In a statement, Secretary-General Ahmed Goldgeit warned that any postponement would be a deliberate
12:57call for crisis.
12:58He stressed that the withdrawal must be complete and on the agreed date.
13:03He urged parties guaranteeing the agreement to pressure Israel to fulfill its promise
13:07and leave southern Lebanon on schedule.
13:10Israel was forced to accept a ceasefire with Hezbollah on November 27, after suffering
13:16losses and failing to achieve its objectives despite killing over 4,000 people in Lebanon.
13:22The 60-day truce was extended for three weeks until February 18, after Israeli troops missed
13:27the withdrawal deadline.

14:08Welcome back.
14:10The governments of Russia and the United States agreed on the need to resume talks, resolve
14:14their differences and address the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
14:18Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke on Monday about the telephone conversation
14:22between President Biden reporting on his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, in which the two
14:27presidents stressed the need to put behind them a period of bilateral relations that
14:31has been described as anomalous.
14:33In this context, the Kremlin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that this Tuesday, the
14:37first talks with the U.S. representatives will take place in Saudi Arabia, where they
14:41will discuss possible negotiations.
14:51Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky had already announced his decision not to attend
14:56the meeting.
14:57He made it clear that he demands European involvement and does not want to enter into
15:01negotiations before determining what security guarantees the United States and its allies
15:06are prepared to offer to ensure that the ceasefire is not violated.
15:10The Ukrainian president has also stated that he would not accept a negotiated peace between
15:15Russia and the U.S.
15:21And in this context, the British government is said to be ready to send troops to Kiev.
15:25The British proposal aims to protect the security of its territory and the whole of Europe,
15:29according to Prime Minister Gary Starmer.
15:32The decision taken at the White House and accepted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
15:36seems to have taken not only London by surprise, but also all the leaders of the European bloc.
15:42According to Starmer's latest statements, security has become the great challenge and
15:47is emerging as the crucial topic of the meeting to be held this Monday in the French capital,
15:52Paris.
15:59In Germany, the 66th Munich Security Conference closed on a sour note for the Europeans.
16:04Forum Chairman Christoph Hösgen described it as a nightmare for Europe and closed the
16:09conference in tears.
16:10The presence of the U.S. Vice President James Devane specially upset the Germans.
16:15Both Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck condemned the U.S. support for
16:20pro-Nazi parties and organizations in Germany.
16:23The president of the Munich conference went further and said that the Trump administration
16:27lives on a different planet and assured that after the Vance conference, the forum may
16:32no longer be a transatlantic initiative because there are no longer common values between
16:36Europe and the United States.
16:43And veterans of the German anti-fascist movement, grannies against the right, have ramped up
16:48their demonstrations ahead of federal elections on February 23rd.
16:52The actions come as polls show the far-right AFD party at a record 20% or higher.
16:58Most of the group's members either have early childhood memories of Nazi Germany and grew
17:03up amid the rubble of a devastated and shamed country, now determined to warn younger generations
17:09of the dangers of political extremism.
17:12The OMAS movement has become a force to be reckoned with as right-wing extremism is on
17:18the rise again.
17:23I hope that everyone will vote for a democratic party on the 23rd.
17:33But I also find it very important to criticize the democratic parties.
17:42So, it's really difficult.
17:45But one party is definitely not allowed to get the vote and that is the one, this right-wing
17:51extremist AFD.
17:52I can't even name it.
17:56The grannies against the right are actually very important.
17:58They are older people, some of whom probably lived up to the 1945 period themselves.
18:03Some of them are really very old.
18:05And they simply stand up for human rights, against racism, against discrimination, against
18:10hatred.
18:11And I think that's very important and very supportive.
18:22In Cuba, the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, presented
18:28his book, Río Quemado, during the Havana International Book Fair.
18:32During the presentation of his literary work, Rodríguez explained that the book is based
18:37on an extensive poem which is interwoven between each of its chapters, solving a conversation
18:43between an 11-year-old boy and the pain and terror of his father's murder.
18:48In this sense, Rodríguez points out that this work has served to exercise many things
18:53that, at some time, were difficult to deal with.
18:56During the presentation, the Venezuelan Minister of Communication, Freddy Ñáñez, was also
19:00present and emphasized that the book fair in Cuba represents the defense of dignity
19:05and a response to all those who try to silence the voice of the people.
19:18Indeed, the Cuban Book Fair is much more than a book fair.
19:24It is an exercise in dignity, a defense of beauty, and a response to the scoundrels
19:30and savages who seek to silence an entire people.
19:33It is a fair that it is a moral choice and for which we in Latin America are grateful.
19:38Today, we at La Sirena Publishing House are celebrating because we have a stand here in Cuba.
19:44Thanks to the generosity of the Cuban Book Institute and we hope that this edition
19:48reach young people and Cuban readers.
19:57But we are proud to also present the second edition of the book Río Quemado
20:01by the writer, political poet and psychiatrist Jorge Rodríguez Gómez.
20:07In a special interview for a news multi-platform telestur, the president of the National Assembly
20:12of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, talked about his experience presenting the book at the fair.
20:21It is always a pleasure to come to this free land, to the land of Fidel, to the land of Raul
20:26and also to one of the most important book fairs in the world.
20:29Without a doubt, one of the most important in our continent.
20:34For its persistence, for the strength it presents, for the great variety of titles
20:39and the great numbers of activities that take place at this fair.
20:43So I feel deeply proud and grateful that I have been able to come here to present the pages
20:49that I have been working on over the years.
20:52Here we have come to present a collection of poems, which is very meaningful to me,
20:57which is a poem dedicated to my father, today the anniversary of his birth,
21:02we have presented the book Río Quemado, which is a long conversation throughout the book
21:08between an 11-year-old boy and the pain and the fear that the murder of his father means.
