00:00:00Celtics beat is brought to you by price picks and the game time app
00:00:06All right, everyone. We are back new edition of Celtics beat. Thanks so much for hanging out here with us
00:00:11Hopefully your weekend is off to a great start part of me or if you are listening, of course
00:00:17Early in the week, you know, it is a podcast after all who knows what the Celtics are up to at this point in time
00:00:22They got a home game coming up on Sunday as we sit here right now
00:00:27That is against the Pelicans and then a little you know trip to a quick trip to Toronto back home for a couple against Orlando
00:00:34And Atlanta and that you know really takes us through the next week
00:00:38It's a quiet week for the Celtics on the heels of what largely was a very successful road trip
00:00:44obviously, you know wins over
00:00:46Minnesota and blowout of Houston took care of Denver albeit without yokich and then you know
00:00:53Fall of course at Oklahoma City the Celtics they'll respond to all of that by coming back home and
00:00:59Really kind of having their doors blown off by the Kings in the fourth quarter in particular part of the issues
00:01:05That we do need to discuss for this
00:01:08imperfect
00:01:11Hope to be perfect kind of contender a team that felt so perfect last year
00:01:16But yeah
00:01:17It's not the case Adam Kaufman and Valenti and Gary Washburn is here with us from the Boston Globe part of the CLNS family as
00:01:23Well, Gary, how you been?
00:01:26Good good. Good guys. Same all same all obviously almost to the midseason
00:01:32but an interesting season so far, but everything everything's good and
00:01:36kind of yes, I'm covering the ups and downs of
00:01:40This team because it is they're getting to the point where the minute you count on them
00:01:46They do something a little different they they go against the grain
00:01:49I just thought that Sacramento game was a game that was a lot to talk about there
00:01:54Yeah, I mean, let's let's get into it
00:01:56You know you wrote about it
00:01:57Obviously people can check out the article
00:01:59But I think in large part it starts with the title and I don't know if you wrote this title or if that was the
00:02:04Editors but outworked and unfocused Celtics have slipped into being just another contender now
00:02:10This were a few years back people would look at it and say one what else is new, you know
00:02:14Outworked unfocused inconsistent what-have-you but but the whole just another contender thing, you know, that would have felt like a compliment honestly
00:02:22But now obviously we see what they do
00:02:25you know what they did last year and and
00:02:28Just almost wire to wire and no issues in the postseason and and now you come back into this
00:02:35Run back largely the same team you improve in some areas. You're generally healthy
00:02:40I know there was the porzingis injury at the start of the year
00:02:43But generally this team out, you know, some bodies in and out of the lineup you expect that every team goes through it
00:02:48But mostly this team is is right where you want it to be health wise and yet there is there's just something
00:02:55Going on that it goes beyond roster construction because we know there's no issue there. It goes beyond basketball
00:03:01it's there there's something kind of within the
00:03:04the DNA of this team right now that is I
00:03:08Don't know if we kind of label it
00:03:11Championship hangover or you know, there's just there there is as again talked about in the article
00:03:17there is a certain level of lack of focus that is happening right now that
00:03:24You don't want them to be that team and there are so many of these teams year to year that just says I will flip
00:03:30The switch when the playoff gets here, you know, we'll be that team again because we just were do you worry about that team?
00:03:36Repeating what it did last year given what we're seeing this year
00:03:41yeah, I worry about the other two teams like
00:03:44In my story, I pointed out like they won the East last year by 14 games, right?
00:03:50Right
00:03:50There was there was 250 win teams in the East the Celtics in the Knicks
00:03:54Like it was a bunch of mediocrity in the East last year and they won and they won
00:04:00The overall best-recognized by seven games of Thunder at 57 wins
00:04:04Now the Cavs are on a 73 women pace and the Thunder might be on a 70 win pace
00:04:11So there's two teams who are just legitimately better than the Celtics
00:04:17And the Celtics are on a 58 win pace
00:04:19And if you would have said that that's not a bad record 58 and 24, you know
00:04:24Probably good enough to get that number to see depending on what the Knicks do
00:04:27But it just seems like their level of consistency and concentration
00:04:32Isn't there because you're talking about seven home losses already
00:04:35They had for all of last year and they lost at home to Memphis
00:04:39Oh, see Memphis a quality team
00:04:42But you know fell apart in the fourth quarter against Memphis fell apart in the fourth quarter against, Indiana
00:04:48Bella Peltz part in the fourth quarter against Sacramento where they were up
00:04:5372-63 and then they literally got out scored 34 to 11
00:04:57And it's just like what's going on here by a Kings team without the air in Fox
00:05:01and
00:05:02It's not only like
00:05:04Teams are playing better against them, which they are
00:05:07Guys, I just think it's lack of concentration and it started to me if you look at you know
00:05:12I don't know if you guys watch the whole Sacramento game, but they lost that game in the fourth quarter
00:05:17when Devin Carter hit those two threes like that game to me they were done like he got two open threes and
00:05:25He was fourth NBA game. He was two for ten from three in those first three games
00:05:30so, of course, they let him shoot and he hit him both like Steph and
00:05:35this after that the cells were down six and they were just never the same and
00:05:42Then they get discouraged shots aren't falling
00:05:45Tatum drive to the basket
00:05:47Repeatedly is not getting foul calls. So he gets discouraged missing the layup or he's trying to make some
00:05:53Tight pocket pass that gets picked off like there's just so many things going on with this team and it's not that they're not
00:06:00Good they're not contenders or they suck or the trash nothing like that, but you're talking about
00:06:06Are they contenders for this year?
00:06:09This is not 24 if you guys you guys are talking about earlier
00:06:13The Cavs are for real the Cavs are not scared of the Celtics. They're not looking at next year
00:06:19Well, maybe you know, we'll reach the conference finals this year and lose the Celtics in the next year
00:06:24Maybe what no, I'm sure Cleveland's fully feeling like we can go to finals
00:06:29and the same thing with the Thunder like
00:06:32Totally, there was no
00:06:34There's no fear. So we're talking about this year. That's my last year. That's it
00:06:39Oh that roster won the finals if you look at the numbers like not every
00:06:44Nobody besides baby Peyton is having a really standout season like so far
00:06:50Everybody's kind of going with what they do
00:06:52Some shooting numbers are down their defense is down and Joe can point to some of the the statistics
00:06:59Oh, we're fourth and defense and all that
00:07:00But look at the fourth quarter like that defensive fourth quarter against Sacramento the one against, Indiana
00:07:07Like, you know, they're getting punched in the mouth, and I'm not sure
00:07:11some of that's effort desire
00:07:14Discouragement because threes aren't going down and shots aren't going down. So
00:07:18If you're talking about if you want the Celtics to lose in the second round, don't complain. Don't say anything. They're fine
00:07:25They're great if you want them to make the finals
00:07:27I think there's a reason for concern and some things and that need to change and have to be done have to improve
00:07:33That maybe not my time. I'll show this trade Tatum
00:07:37Not saying that but there has to be some adjustments mentally as well as physically
00:07:43Yeah, there's been a kajillion
00:07:46Moments in the tenure of Joe muscle of you and him kind of verbally sparring over three-point shooting and I'm going to beat that dead
00:07:53horse, but the idea of
00:07:55shooting variants being
00:07:58This is what's hurting this team. The threes just aren't going down. I
00:08:02See that I hear that
00:08:04But this team also has to recognize that when the shots aren't going down
00:08:08You have to be crisper at everything else like people were like, hey, man that the Oklahoma City loss like what do you think?
00:08:15I'm like, well this team needs to realize that if it's not gonna shoot
00:08:17Well, they just can't turn the ball over a ton of times either like that game was winnable
00:08:20They missed open shots, but they also turned the ball over like idiots the end of the game, too
00:08:24So it's it's you know
00:08:26last year's team was so good that I think it maybe has
00:08:31Morphed our brains a little bit to thinking like oh this team just gonna be red hot from three for
00:08:3682 games the regular season and 19 games in the postseason
00:08:40Where in reality Gary is this team just like okay?
00:08:44If you're if the shots aren't falling last year was an anomaly. It was an incredible anomaly
00:08:49It will go down in NBA history is one of the most single-seasoned like the most dominant single seasons in NBA history
00:08:56but when we pull the curtain back and kind of stay it all the way back is
00:09:01This team forgetting that if the shots aren't falling that everything else has to be
00:09:07significantly crisper on both ends of the floor for them to reap because it's like yeah
00:09:11You can you can turn the ball over 20 times if you're shooting 40% from 3d hit 20 of them
00:09:15But when it when they're when you're 11 of 41 or 10 of 45
00:09:20The other stuff that you were good at last year has to be even better than it was last year
00:09:25Does that seem to be like the case to you?
00:09:27yeah, I mean they've got to improve on all aspects of the game in terms of concentration to like
00:09:33Last night Tatum was drove to the basket
00:09:36either missed the layup thought he was fouled and just stopped and like shook his head and
00:09:42Then got back on defense as opposed to just get back on defense
00:09:45Derek white
00:09:47Like put his head down a couple of times because he missed a lot of open threes as he usually makes Derek white
00:09:53Is going through a slump?
00:09:55It's it's it's a prolonged slump now. He's not terrible from three, but he's just not hitting those open looks because
00:10:03Him hitting open looks is key to the author key to the offense because he's gonna get so many
00:10:08Because of the focus on Tatum and Brown he's missing open looks Al's missing open looks
00:10:13Hauser
00:10:15You know, there's good Hauser and there's not so good Hauser
00:10:18You know if Hauser is going over five or four six like it's no reason to really have them on the floor
00:10:25You know, and so you don't have to me
00:10:30that bucket get her off the bench because teams are now shifting their focus to Peyton and
00:10:36Peyton is trying to deal with the adjustments to him. I'm trying to want to huh?
00:10:42He's in a slump too. Yeah, totally and they're turning him into a driver and they're putting bigger defenders on him
00:10:50And they're making him have to like beat guys, you know
00:10:55like the other
00:10:57Kind of a key sequence last night where he kind of shoved
00:11:01And he got the little jumper over Malik month, but they called the charge. They call offensive foul
00:11:05Like I don't know how he hasn't had many offensive fouls this year
00:11:09But maybe that's something that
00:11:11Officials are to look for. Hey, man, he's clear in space like, you know teams are adjusting to the Celtics
00:11:17They're taking more threes. They're defending Celtics as the Kings had that zone
00:11:23the Celtic didn't really know what to do with it and
00:11:26To me. It's a level like you said Evan of having to do everything else get back on freakin defense
00:11:33I quit shaking your head or nodding or shake
00:11:36You know being down or putting your head slumping your head after a miss shot get back on D
00:11:41One time last night as I pointed out in the story
00:11:45Jason went to the rim. I missed oh man guy back on defense
00:11:50He goes to the left wing. I think the cover may be like
00:11:58Trey Lyle's and then there's
00:12:01Monk at the open of the top of the key for a three and Monk hits it like
00:12:06Because you're going they Kings played five on four because Tatum was slow to get back then covered the wrong man
00:12:12Like there's just lapses like that and it was I said they played good ball on the road
00:12:18They played good ball. They like you like they were a solid fourth quarter
00:12:24From winning that Oklahoma City game and they kind of fell apart and then they left
00:12:28You know door open for a couple threes and and he had he had struggled but they need to get hit three of them
00:12:35And they lost right, but I just don't see the consistency
00:12:39And I don't want to hear guys about world's first game after a long world
00:12:44They're on the road for a week man. It was it was not like one of these seven game
00:12:4914 day tracks where you're just yelling for nowhere time is they literally had two full days off before Friday's game
00:12:57I mean they played Tuesday in Denver
00:12:59They had Wednesday and Thursday off, you know
00:13:02Like I don't I did a whole like first game back from a rope. You're playing a team without its best player
00:13:08You're playing a team that wins the last time Sacramento and I look at what's less of Sacramento one in Boston
00:13:13It's got to be ten years at least
00:13:16The Kings are not a great road team. They're better than the road that at home. They're actually awful at home this year
00:13:22Yeah, you know it's probably one of the reasons Mike Brown got fired
00:13:25But like they were ready to sort of let go of the rope when it was 72 63 and the Celtics
00:13:31Couldn't build on that lead then Sacramento caught him at the end of the quarter
00:13:36Then here comes Devin Carter with two threes to begin the fourth and all of a sudden the Suns are down six
00:13:40And they're like what just happened here and they just don't have the gill at this point
00:13:46The fortitude to rally and go. Okay, let's let's get this game
00:13:51And so
00:13:53It's to me. It was effort and focus and
00:13:56discouragement from missing
00:13:59Open shots from taking threes from you know, missing layups
00:14:04And you know, it's just a combination of things
00:14:08Yeah, I mean the the aggravating thing about last night
00:14:11You know this this game against the Kings and anyone who watched this and obviously the three of us did but anyone out there listening
00:14:17Watching who watched that game, you know, this is what like I'm so I'm not
00:14:21the type of person Gary that
00:14:23Is sitting there like getting all riled up watching a game
00:14:26In the regular season and yelling at the TV and all that stuff unless I got you know money on it or something like that
00:14:32But generally reserve that behavior for the postseason when the games really matter and yet fourth quarter last night
00:14:38it just there there were so many instances where
00:14:43Again, it wasn't look shots. Don't fall shots. Don't fall. That's just part of it, but
00:14:49The effort required just to you know
00:14:52Go for a rebound that it they were there
00:14:55They just seemed and I don't take anything away from the performance because he was excellent
00:15:00But they the Celtics seemed in many ways. So just sort of
00:15:06Okay with DeMontis Sabonis hauling in rebound after like they weren't even challenging him. It wasn't all positioning
00:15:13It wasn't all just tallest guy on the floor. What have you it was just you know
00:15:19Acquiescing and and just sort of backing out of the way and especially in that fourth quarter where things are unraveling
00:15:26You'd see them start to rely on the three or outside shot and what-have-you and you know
00:15:30Trying to shoot their way back into the game and fine
00:15:33That's that's just how they want to play it is what it is
00:15:35But ball bounds off the rim and you'll see like three Kings in the vicinity and the Celtics aren't it?
00:15:42The Celtics are already working on running back
00:15:44There are you know, they're just not even going for the second chance and that that to me was what was
00:15:51Especially sort of disconcerting about this game and and honestly just their disposition
00:15:57That's why I I mentioned off the top of the show
00:15:59there's just something that I don't like in the DNA of this group right now that it's just the we're the defending champs and
00:16:08There's nothing you can do about it until we're not and when we get to the postseason again
00:16:12We're gonna show you but maybe they can't flip that switch or maybe somebody, you know does
00:16:20Suffer whatever kind of injury they go down, you know, they're they're not the way we want them to look come April May June
00:16:26So I'm I'm rambling here, but there's that that to me. It was the thing
00:16:31It was it was they were just even if they managed to win that game
00:16:35They were just failing the eye test time and time again down the floor. That's what was aggravating
00:16:42yeah, I mean I look at their losses guys and like
00:16:46That I think it's not like you're right. I don't mean there's a lot of things going on
00:16:51But if you look at their losses this season
00:16:54to to Indiana
00:16:57That loss at home the Golden State the whole loss at home with Lana
00:17:03Respectable loss
00:17:06To Cleveland without Jalen Brown with a game
00:17:09They could have won at Cleveland. They lost at home to Memphis. They lost on the Chicago
00:17:15that loss at Orlando where they led by by they led by
00:17:1915 at halftime and then just kind of went through the motions and got shut down
00:17:24Um the loss at home to Philadelphia like the law
00:17:29Oklahoma City, but I mean if you look at their losses guys like only
00:17:34Two are like you'd say yep
00:17:36Legit losses, Oklahoma City in Cleveland
00:17:40That's it. The other nine
00:17:43You're like they probably should have won that game or why are they losing to this team?
00:17:47You could put Memphis in there. So three little 11 losses, but at Indiana they lost an overtime
00:17:54You know Golden State a game that now the Warriors are playing terribly or they were
00:17:59But the Warriors are played a really good game that night
00:18:03But the Warriors are played a really good game that night
00:18:05that whole loss to Atlanta without Trey that kind of blew their NBA Cup chances like
00:18:12They're losing the teams that they should they should beat and last year. That's the thing
00:18:17this last year's team with this schedule
00:18:20is
00:18:21probably
00:18:22uh
00:18:23true
00:18:2634 and 4
00:18:27Something like that because they they didn't really let down against opponents
00:18:32but this time
00:18:34It's the it's it's the quality of the opponent
00:18:37SAC Chicago twice against Indiana Atlanta
00:18:42Philadelphia at home and the six was just lost last night at home to new orleans without without zion
00:18:48I mean the the pelicans are a mess, but they happen to win at philadelphia last night like
00:18:53The losses are getting concerning because of the competition and that's got to be mental
00:18:58I I do understand though teams are playing better
00:19:02Like teams are just playing guys are stepping up, you know guys are are having
00:19:07Sometimes career nights, but we all knew
00:19:10Sabonis rebounds
00:19:11Monk scores and derosen scores all those guys did what they did
00:19:17And they did it better, you know
00:19:19Tatum 15 points that you can't have tatum's got to have more than 15 points like guys
00:19:24Derek white's got to be better like
00:19:26Huh, especially right after jennings calls him out. Yeah. Yeah, exactly 15 points better respond with more than 15 points
00:19:33Yeah, I mean to so to me like it's not
00:19:37Well, they've had this really, you know
00:19:39Difficult schedule. I mean they've done what they've done good against they beat minnesota twice
00:19:46They blew out houston. They beat beat cleveland at home. They've beaten detroit who's a solid team
00:19:53Now they've beaten them three times, you know, they've beaten milwaukee three times
00:19:59So it's not a talent thing
00:20:01It's not well this team just isn't as good or they're late. It's when they play teams. They should be that's why
00:20:09I mean now with zion coming back off the suspension tomorrow, but someday against the pelicans becomes kind of like a
00:20:15Well, you hope that they step up. I mean, it's it sounds like a blowout but
00:20:20You know, you don't know and that's the thing it's the concentration against some of the lesser opponents like
00:20:25You know losing twice to the pacers the bulls the hawks
00:20:30Teams that they should have beaten and this last year this team did not have that type of issue
00:20:35So to me, it's it's mostly mental concentration
00:20:39And then falling apart in the fourth quarter indiana
00:20:42I think went on what 13 nothing run in the middle of the fourth quarter if the celtics cut it to two
00:20:48Philadelphia blew them out in the fourth quarter on christmas day. Like they're letting go of the rope and i'm not sure why
00:20:55late in games

00:22:06You can even add the oklahoma city game late in the fourth where you know, they were right there
00:22:10There was neck and neck and then oklahoma city just pulled away
00:22:13And what felt like of the blink of an eye it was like all of a sudden like oh, they're down
00:22:17What now? Oh, okay, whatever like this is over. Um, I want to use tatum's words a little bit
00:22:24Because
00:22:26last year
00:22:27He said something I thought that was extremely important and I and i'm i'm glad he said it it was about previous trips in the playoffs
00:22:35And why this one that resulted in a championship was different than the previous ones was because they didn't skip any steps
00:22:41I loved how he said that and we all we often talked about boston playing with their food too much
00:22:46You know letting letting a series that gets atlanta go to six games or are keeping teams around longer than they should
00:22:53They weren't they didn't have that killer instinct. They didn't want to
00:22:55Get rid of guy get rid of teams in five games and four games and be in
00:23:00Not understanding the value of having that downtime that rest to build you up for the next series and last year
00:23:05Obviously they dispatched everybody in four and five games. So clearly they understood we can't skip any steps. We have to get this done
00:23:12Does it feel like they're trying to skip steps right now?
00:23:14Can they afford to skip steps right now considering the way the rest of the nba is because you look around
00:23:19Cleveland is not skipping any steps
00:23:22They continue to absolutely kill everybody. They play their offense is unbelievably good
00:23:28They have two good big defensive guys that play pretty much every second of the game
00:23:34Oklahoma city on the meanwhile
00:23:35They have the best perimeter defense in the nba by a mile
00:23:38And they're led by what I would consider the lead mvp candidate right now. They're not skipping any steps
00:23:44So to use tatum's words against him, does it feel like?
00:23:48Boston is skipping steps and can they afford to?
00:23:51Considering the other guys that are in the contender status certainly aren't right now
00:23:56I
00:23:57Think they said all the right things at the beginning of training camp where they didn't want to skip steps
00:24:02And this is a new season and we're going to take it
00:24:05One day at a time and we're not even going to think about the playoffs. We're going to get ourselves together now
00:24:10and I think that sounds great, but I think a lot of
00:24:13They're guilty of looking ahead. They're guilty. I think of just kind of getting bored with the process
00:24:18Bored with some of the opponents
00:24:20It's great to get up for the big guys
00:24:22But you got to take care of business against the teams that are
00:24:27That are that that are capable of beating you but shouldn't beat you
00:24:31but you look at cleveland, you know cleveland's not perfect, but
00:24:35I thought an interesting thing that told me about cleveland was the night after oklahoma. They had a really bizarre
00:24:41Oklahoma city toronto home back-to-back, right?
00:24:44Emotional win over oklahoma city everybody plays or you know great game
00:24:49The what high ratings then here come the raptors and the raptors, you know, they rest out of it mitchell
00:24:57So the rap and the raptors are playing well that night because the raptors
00:25:01With barrett and with scotty barns and with quickly they got talent. They're not
00:25:07Obviously they're headed for them straight for the lottery, but they have guys that on a particular night can get you
00:25:13and
00:25:14the
00:25:15uh
00:25:16They they led the cavaliers most of the way then here comes garland with a 40 piece guy step up
00:25:22They win what 129 120 like they get the dub
00:25:26Wasn't pretty they didn't cover the spread. They know it wasn't it was it was a it was an ugly win
00:25:33But they responded and said you're not going to come in and spoil our party after we didn't beat the thunder
00:25:39We're going to do whatever it takes to beat you even though it's not we're not at our best
00:25:44And that's the thing where oklahoma city
00:25:47um
00:25:48comes back
00:25:50And beats the breaks out of the knicks after losing
00:25:53To the thought to to cleveland. I mean he just
00:25:57They just pushed they beat the knicks twice now twice in six days
00:26:01Like they just beat the brakes off of them and the celtics
00:26:05I just think have to get that and i'm going to use my rocky
00:26:09Uh three reference they gotta get the eye of the tiger back
00:26:12Like and I don't know if you know, they need apollo creed to visit training camp
00:26:18And get them back where they they had fire again
00:26:22But they definitely need
00:26:24to have that
00:26:26fire to where
00:26:27No, we're not going to let sacramento come in because you you knew it was okay
00:26:32The king's hit I think eight threes in the first quarter like okay sacramento is here to play like this new doug christie
00:26:40Sac team is not mike brown sac team. They came in
00:26:44We're here to win. We know you're coming off a long road trip. So you knew
00:26:48Okay, the key the celts aren't going to just pull away and win by 25. This is not
00:26:53Going to happen. You're going to have to grind this game out. So i'm not saying
00:26:57Oh, they should have blown the kings out. The kings weren't even you know, shouldn't be on the floor with them
00:27:01No last night was going to be a tough game
00:27:04But you got to find it in your fortitude to play better in the fourth quarter and not get out scoring 38 21
00:27:11That's embarrassing. You can't let
00:27:13Sabona said the three-point line like okay who's going to guard me here and just
00:27:17You know can't open three like they got embarrassed and they stopped trying
00:27:23and then they got you know, and and and
00:27:26Missoula who never throws in the towel threw in the towel and what two and a half minutes left like he saw it
00:27:33like guys just just
00:27:35Hit the showers like i've only seen him do that one other time. It was that milwaukee game
00:27:39They were getting the yeah when they were like kicked in and that was the only time i've seen missoula say no
00:27:44We're not we're not even trying here
00:27:47That's really it so it's like for me, you know, I don't know it's it's frustrating kaufman when you look at
00:27:53You know coming off of last year where everybody was hitting
00:27:5640 of their threes
00:27:58This year what doesn't happen you would hope that they would you know
00:28:03Find different ways to win basketball games and just stop, you know
00:28:06It's still relying on the three-point shot so much. You know what I mean?
00:28:09well, we've been talking about that for a while, it's the
00:28:13You know again, like you just said you need to be able to win
00:28:16Other than you need to be able to win on on nights. The threes aren't falling but beyond that
00:28:21There's a a mental toughness that i've alluded to multiple times and gary's talked about and wrote about that
00:28:28They haven't been displaying there's
00:28:31you know beyond all of that the
00:28:36You know, don't read your own press clippings and all of these things, you know, I understand that yeah
00:28:41Like it's everything they said in the offseason and media day and leading into the year about
00:28:45You know being the hunted and wanting the red dot on the forehead and all that like
00:28:49Yeah, that was going to come to fruition when you're the defending champs
00:28:52That's that's what's going to happen
00:28:54But I don't need them to just entirely change the way, you know
00:28:57The style in which they play basketball that led to so much success last year and I still believe
00:29:02Is going to be largely successful for them this year. You just want them to respond on certain nights when
00:29:09Something isn't going right find like you said find another way if if not another
00:29:16Specific strategy on the floor. Okay. Well, let's go more inside. Let's let's try and attack
00:29:20Let's try and draw fouls like it's there. It's it's the mental component that feels like on certain nights
00:29:27Like last night in the fourth quarter for whatever reason long grind of the season coming off a trip. I don't know it's it's sort of
00:29:35Missing it's it's eluding them right now. So that's that's what we need them to clean up obviously, but the uh,
00:29:43You know the in the spirit of embarrassing gary used that that word earlier
00:29:47What was uh, just to take us away from the the negativity for a moment or at least turn the negativity onto somebody else the uh,
00:29:54Embarrassing was was this whole, you know, jason tatum brandon. Jennings thing
00:29:58Not so much on the tatum side of things even though, you know responding with 15 points
00:30:03Uh, not a great look after you're going to respond on social media, but but jennings
00:30:07I just think this is the evolution of
00:30:11Of commentary as a result of social media and podcasts and all these different platforms that didn't exist decades ago
00:30:19Is is just a fascinating dynamic to coverage in sports in general, but a league like the nba or the nfl, you know
00:30:26Obviously most prevalent, you know, you've got a brandon. Jennings never
00:30:31Look, he accomplished a hell of a lot more in the nba than I ever did or ever will but uh, you know
00:30:36By nba standards didn't do much, you know, he didn't last a decade
00:30:40Didn't average 20 points a game didn't win anything other than being, uh, you know first team
00:30:46uh all rookie, you know back in his first year obviously was out of the league before he was 30 and
00:30:53Yeah, it still kind of has the nerve to go on
00:30:56I I guess a podcast or wherever he was. I don't know if it's his podcast or he was a guest or whatever
00:31:01He was doing espn where I I don't even know wherever he existed
00:31:06He said that jason tatum was the softest celtics superstar ever
00:31:10and
00:31:11that would mean something if it came from
00:31:15Kevin garnett right or or paul pierce or you know, some top 75 top 50 player all time, especially a celtic
00:31:24When someone like brandon jennings says it I understand everyone's sort of compulsion to want to just laugh at it
00:31:31But what I wanted to talk to you about specifically gary because you've covered this team for a long time
00:31:35Or this league for a long time. You've been around these guys for a long time. I thought what joe missoula
00:31:42Said in response to this was was just so
00:31:46Spot on and I think about it all the time. I think about it in regard to you know, certain members of uh,
00:31:52Of celtics history for that matter, but you don't often hear it vocalized which is that a lot of guys
00:32:00Play their careers, whatever happens happens and then they retire and over a certain period of time
00:32:07they cert they they
00:32:09believe that ultimately they were maybe better than they were and their careers were better than they were and they
00:32:16Feel as though they can come out and make comments like this and and you know that that it's going to mean
00:32:22Anything and I I just i'm curious how many people or how often?
00:32:27You feel like you're running into this situation when you are
00:32:31Either interviewing someone or just you know watching tnt or espn or wherever, you know
00:32:37Some podcast or something on instagram something on social media and you're you're just hearing these players. It's like man. Do you remember?
00:32:45When you were in the league and what that looked like and what you could and couldn't do
00:32:50Well
00:32:51One thing I discovered
00:32:53years ago
00:32:54covering baseball
00:32:56um in talking to base performer baseball board most professional at four professional athletes think a
00:33:03They either were much better than they really were
00:33:06Or much worse than they really were. So there's certain athletes just have this level of humility about when they played
00:33:13And they talk themselves down and you're like wow, like, you know, and they you were great
00:33:18Yeah, I was so it was pretty good. I did all you know, I did what I could and then you got guys who
00:33:24were
00:33:25pretty good who think that they were hall of famers or
00:33:29Uh think that they were better than they were
00:33:31It's usually nothing in between no one not many athletes have a complete
00:33:36accurate
00:33:37perception of their career except guys
00:33:41Like bird and magic who were just freaking great, but even magic has kind of a humility, right?
00:33:46Badger could say hey, I was the best player all the time. He never heard him say that right?
00:33:50You've never heard some of these guys. Um
00:33:53And and I just think we're in a generation now where a lot of these guys
00:33:59Um
00:34:01The guys who came in 10 12 years ago. So you look at like, uh, the jeff teague podcast, you know
00:34:07Jeff teague just finished playing and you look at the gilbert arenas kenyan martin
00:34:12Rashad mccants podcast and like you look at these guys and they talk the league and and
00:34:19Kenyan martin was a very good player number one overall pick, you know
00:34:23Uh had health issues, but played a long time much respect to
00:34:28Kenyan martin
00:34:29Gilbert arenas his knees don't give out. He's a potential hall of famer and as much he's a knucklehead
00:34:34He he was that good, but he just couldn't stay healthy for a long time. He didn't have a very long long career
00:34:41uh
00:34:42and then um
00:34:44but rashad mccants
00:34:46like a guy who
00:34:48Was a first round pick in minnesota never really panned out never really
00:34:53played
00:34:56Never had a signature nba moment never the signature nba moment
00:35:00I think is when he got drafted
00:35:01I think stern had his head turned and he tapped stern on the back and said hey i'm here like
00:35:07I came on the podium. I think that was like his signature and he's
00:35:11telling you about current guys who are
00:35:15Much better careers than he had and I think the brandon jennings thing is just sad like
00:35:20God, like joe said, you know, and there's third a lot of things. I agree with joe on certain things
00:35:26I don't but as old as guys get some of these guys become inflated with like oh I was I was good
00:35:31Yeah, you were good in high school
00:35:34Like yeah, brandon jennings was a top 10 high school pick. He didn't go to college
00:35:39he was one of those guys that went overseas and then came back and then
00:35:42If i'm looking at his numbers, I know you have adam he had a good first
00:35:48five and a half years
00:35:50Yeah
00:35:51Of his career then suddenly he he fell off a cliff
00:35:56And then he became just a guy and I know he had some injuries
00:36:00and
00:36:01Like you said he was 20 28 when he
00:36:04His last nba game like he averaged 14
00:36:09points in his career
00:36:11uh, almost six assists
00:36:13uh
00:36:14shot
00:36:15uh
00:36:16Career 38 from the field. Oh, that's not good
00:36:2041 on twos. That's not good. Like
00:36:23You know, he was not an electrifying player. He wasn't even close to an all-star
00:36:28He had a good season in the lockout year. He averaged 19 a game. That was his best year like
00:36:33a solid stretch
00:36:35but
00:36:36Not you don't look at brandon jeans and be like, you know, I just think you know
00:36:40And I just think some of these teams like I remember
00:36:42uh
00:36:43I think he was at a bucks game and they introduced him as a bucks legend like let's fall into that now
00:36:50like no
00:36:51You're not a bucks legend like oscar robinson and junior bridgman and brian winners
00:36:56And marcus johnson and giannis are not looking you're not in the you're not you're not getting into the club
00:37:02Like no like those are those are bucks legends, you know, bobby dandridge those are bucks legends like no
00:37:09You're not a bucks legend, but these teams. Oh, you're a former player. You're a bucks legend. Oh and these guys
00:37:16Fall into that and they basically think that they're like, you know, and they sit on these, you know podcasts and they just shoot
00:37:24Then I think there's resentment for the money. These guys make
00:37:27Game has gotten soft when I was playing. Oh, it wasn't like that. Oh, I went up against kobe and
00:37:34And I get it. Um
00:37:37I just think in any aspect of life
00:37:41Like you can't constantly harp on how hard you had it
00:37:45Young people don't want to hear that shit. Excuse my language. Like, you know, it's it wasn't your it's not your time anymore
00:37:52If someone asks you how was it? You can feel free to tell them
00:37:57As a journalist, I do not tell young people how hard I had it becoming getting to the point
00:38:02Like kids don't want to hear that
00:38:05It's their time. You have to just respect that it's easier for them and you can't resent them for it
00:38:11So I just think
00:38:13It's just sad and that's that's how we it goes here
00:38:17um with these podcasts and all these guys and then
00:38:20As I asked joe last night, I don't know if you saw the pregame like kind of reminding him
00:38:25Like do y'all lump all them in with media so I so tatum's blaming us and blaming me
00:38:31For the being the media called himself the media didn't call him
00:38:34You saw no a former player called you saw like not the media brandon jennings is not registering for a pro
00:38:41Basketball writers association card like no
00:38:44He's a guy who's on a podcast
00:38:47who's a former player who
00:38:49if you
00:38:51Really know hoops, you know who he is
00:38:54I'm sure there's a lot of youngsters. They're like
00:38:58They might have played him in 2k with him in 2k or something
00:39:01But you know, they don't know
00:39:04Grant this guy like oh man. Yeah that dude. Oh, he was like
00:39:09like
00:39:10The derrick rose, they know derrick rose, right?
00:39:13They know that dude, right? You're not derrick rose. You're not one of these guys that had a 12 14 year career
00:39:20You battled in playoff series you had signature moments like no you you played six or seven years you got hurt and then
00:39:29Your career was done. You were out of the you know
00:39:34Brandon jennings played in 25 playoff games
00:39:37He never made it
00:39:39There was he never seen he'd make it past the first he went to an eastern conference semis
00:39:45um
00:39:46As a reserve as a reserve in washington in his last year
00:39:51In 2017. No, that was the second last year
00:39:55When he when he was just kind of a bench guy for the wizards like that was his longest playoff run
00:40:01He's never he never played no finals. I played no eastern conference finals. Don't cover nothing
00:40:06so
00:40:07I think you have to kind of look at it like that. I hope jason and those guys do look at it like that
00:40:13um
00:40:14in terms of just
00:40:16Okay, look look at the source as opposed to
00:40:19Oh, man, these all these media members think i'm soft. That's not right. I know i'm not soft like don't listen to that
00:40:26That's just crazy. It's unfortunate
00:40:29but
00:40:29you know those guys say crazy things and they laugh and they giggle it up and they all talk as if they
00:40:35Because I think a lot of them. Well, I was a shit in college. Yeah, you were
00:40:38You know, you were good, you know or not james like a guy like rashad mccants. Yeah, so you were good
00:40:44You were you know, what is he a 15th pick?
00:40:46You know, that's great. None of us think I ever say that but what happened in your career? What is your signature nba moment?
00:40:54you know
00:40:55you know, I had a 50 point game when I was like, that's that's nice in a regular season game, but like
00:41:01to me
00:41:02like
00:41:03You know the nba could go on without brandon jennings and it's not like well you gotta if you're gonna talk about the nba
00:41:09in the 2010s
00:41:11Uh, you've got to talk about brandon jennings like no you don't
00:41:15Like you you know
00:41:17If you mention him, that's fine
00:41:19But he's not I don't get that
00:41:23his best shooting year was
00:41:26Was 2011 12. He shot 41 42 percent from the field
00:41:3133 percent from three that was his best
00:41:35best shooting year from the field
00:41:38Was 42 percent
00:41:41I
00:41:42Have to laugh at the brandon jennings bucks legend comment and just for fun. I just pulled up michael redd
00:41:48You know if if if brandon jennings is a bucks legend
00:41:51I don't know what michael redd is because michael redd kills him in every category pretty much
00:41:55Yeah, I do want to piggyback on this. This is interesting
00:41:58and I want to get to
00:42:00Some people have made this point
00:42:03about
00:42:04The way the nba covers itself and in jennings and this podcast
00:42:09leans right into this and
00:42:11You know when it comes from ben and jen it's one thing or if it comes from like
00:42:14Shaq and kenny and chuck. It's a little bit different. But at the same time it feels like
00:42:20the nba
00:42:22Tries to like kill itself from within more than any other professional sport out there right now, like you don't have
00:42:29nfl guys
00:42:30talking about
00:42:31Justin herbert the same way guys are talking about jason tatum or you don't have baseball guys with baseball
00:42:38Podcasts or guys on major baseball broadcasts talking about the game of baseball the way that you know
00:42:44Chuck and kenny talk about
00:42:47Guys shooting too many threes in the league this year. Is this does this feel problematic?
00:42:52Is it or is it is it like too much honesty? Like it just feels like the nba
00:42:58Is the only one
00:42:59And real quick because and this is probably where you're going with gary, but I I think
00:43:04And i'm gary. I'm curious if you agree with this because I you know
00:43:08Watch a lot of this crap. I think the large difference is that in the nfl
00:43:13former players people like us whoever but we're focusing on former players they
00:43:19A lot of them are trying to be analysts. They are trying to give I think it's inside the nba-itis
00:43:24Like there's one inside the nba like they're there's a countdown where steven a and perk they've seen perk
00:43:32Go at guys and become successful and make a lot of money and become a media personality for being
00:43:39um
00:43:40you know like
00:43:42Critical right and I just think these guys they can say what they want
00:43:47Um, there's no filter. There's no fcc
00:43:51There's no one saying anything like hey, you might want to calm down on using this language or you know
00:43:57Might want to not want to talk about angel reese in this fashion or things like that
00:44:02That's misogynist sexist things like that. No, no, no, there's no filters there. They just oh i'm keeping it real
00:44:09and you got a lot of guys who probably either a need the money or two don't need the money in a sense and just
00:44:15want to just
00:44:16Be you know, and what's the guy dj atomics with his podcast the the the the you know
00:44:23i'm talking about probably having right the uh
00:44:26and oh man, he uh
00:44:29Uh
00:44:30dj atomics, he's like a
00:44:33Adik mek something like that. I have to this is too cool for me. I have no idea what you're talking about
00:44:39I'm, not cool anymore. So i'm already
00:44:42I don't know that the young kids are listening to one more break
00:44:44We gotta tell you that uh today's show it's powered by game time. There is nothing better than going to a game live
00:44:51It's fun to watch on tv. It's certainly fun to talk sports
00:44:54We do it here on this show, but to be there to be watching so many core memories
00:44:58Yeah, and game time helps you in a kajillion different ways new feature called game time picks
00:45:03It makes getting tickets to see your favorite teams play
00:45:06Even easier they filter out all the fluff to show you the most incredible deals on grade seats
00:45:10so it's a waste time searching through thousands of tickets and
00:45:14Look, there are different ways for you to know how good the deal is that you're about to snag via game time
00:45:19They have something that's labeled great deal amazing deal, but the best tickets are labeled super deal
00:45:26Which means the tickets you're looking at at that particular moment the top one percent
00:45:30Of prices based on the value for that game and that kaufman is usually the first thing you see when we scroll the ticket
00:45:37So make sure if you're looking at game time, you're looking for super deal
00:45:41Those are the best plus with game time you get all in pricing which for me
00:45:45Is one of the greatest inventions ever because you know
00:45:47I hate getting to the end and seeing all the taxes and fees and all things I have to pay for that didn't realize
00:45:51I had to pay for margins. Yep game time takes care of that from the jump, which is great
00:45:56You get a panoramic view from your seat. So you make sure that your view is spectacular
00:46:01And if you find a lower price kaufman, they will refund you credit you
00:46:05110 percent of the difference so you're making money if you find somehow somehow some way find tickets for less
00:46:12Buy your tickets with game time download the game time app create an account use the code
00:46:17Clns get twenty dollars off your first purchase terms apply again create an account redeem the code
00:46:23It's clns get twenty dollars off download game time today last minute tickets lowest price
00:46:31Guaranteed let's get back to the show
00:46:34Yeah, dj
00:46:37Akka akka mix he's an american podcaster internet personality
00:46:42Right. So he pulled him up. Okay, so that's the guy who's going off about drake and kendrick lamar and I got
00:46:51I know this and I I heard like
00:46:54Podcast where he's just headline that pops up dj
00:46:57However, you pronounce it
00:47:00Academics
00:47:02Okay, yeah
00:47:05It's it's not spelled the way academics is yes
00:47:08Dj academics claims drake would help lebron james cheat on his wife. Yes. Okay
00:47:14So that's his podcast, right?
00:47:17and that's like
00:47:18and he's just
00:47:20Throwing daggers at people and I just think these players see that and be like I want to do that
00:47:25I want to just be like laying dudes out and I want to tell them how hard it was when I played it like
00:47:31And some of these guys resent not being in the league
00:47:34They resent how they exited the league the league said to brandon jennings. We don't need you anymore
00:47:40You're a 30 year old
00:47:42Has been or you don't you don't bring anything to the table?
00:47:45So you'll be out of the league like you didn't know so he didn't get signed or he had to go overseas
00:47:50Like I just think guys
00:47:51are letting their personal resentments
00:47:54And how their career ended or a coach they played for
00:47:59um
00:48:01Take they let that affect how they feel about today's younger players. I don't know
00:48:06Evan if like it's a situation where the nba is eating. It's young
00:48:10But I do think that there's a high level of criticism
00:48:14From a lot of the former players and like you said you don't see that in the nfl
00:48:19but you don't have
00:48:21how to put it like you don't have an inside the nba and nfl like you have you know, esp like
00:48:26You know, you have first take rip rip some guys or whatever or rex ryan or really keep it real
00:48:31I mean, he's a guy who's kind of on that precipice of like, um,
00:48:35Just taking on it. You know, that was a stupid call
00:48:38What kind of playing call was that like but rex is also looking to be a coach again
00:48:42I want to show you how much he knows
00:48:45Or you've got like good morning football, but that's an nfl property. Yeah, they're not they're not. Yes
00:48:50They're not going to rip anybody there. They'll be they'll be maybe critical of a play
00:48:56But they're not going to let him hang a player out to dry
00:48:59I think the nba is just somehow different. I said everybody's got inside the nba itis
00:49:04Everybody thinks that they could be chuck and shack and ernie and kenny
00:49:09And these guys go on these podcasts with I said no filter no fcc
00:49:13And just say whatever the hell they want because they want to be significant too. Some of these guys
00:49:18They've spent their life being famous
00:49:21So they want to continue to be famous
00:49:23they don't want to go into this to the to the spotlight or out of the spotlight and like live a
00:49:29private life or live a go back into general business and become a businessman and
00:49:35Not think about basketball or hey i'll you know, make an appearance at a reunion here
00:49:40But yeah, i'm working at this company like some guys have that planned out or they want to coach
00:49:46You know now I don't think these guys want to coach I think
00:49:49one
00:49:51A team would be crazy to hire. You want to hire gilbert?
00:49:54You want gilbert arenas to to work with your kids like you know i'm saying although his son is a great player like
00:50:01You know, these guys are killing their chances. The league can pay you back
00:50:06If you finish playing and you want to work in the league
00:50:08Sometimes you just got to go through the channels. You might have to go into the g league
00:50:11you might have to be a be a you know, seventh assistant on the staff, but
00:50:16It can work
00:50:17But if you keep talking about guys like this, you're never going to get a chance
00:50:21So I don't know what the agenda of a brandon. Jennings brandon. Jennings is obviously 35 years old
00:50:27His professional basketball career is over. So what are you going to do for the next 40 years like?
00:50:33some of these guys do you know, I just think there's a lot of that goes into it simply because
00:50:39um
00:50:41I think guys are bitter about the money that these guys make the the salaries have risen exponentially
00:50:49since the new cba
00:50:50remember all those remember all those guys that made um
00:50:56Remember the 2016 when evan turner
00:50:59And luol ding all made that four-year either 64 or 72 kent basemore
00:51:05And that was crazy money to make 18 million
00:51:08And now you got guys who are making 18 million and that's a
00:51:12Trade very tradable easy to go in slip, you know plug in and play contract and we're not even 10 years after that
00:51:20If a guy makes 18, that's nothing
00:51:23You know i'm saying
00:51:25Your point because I mean it's right here on basketball reference. You want to guess what brandon. Jennings career earnings were
00:51:31than 18 million
00:51:34I would say no
00:51:36Yeah, it's either 30 or 35 or 40 30 you gotta remember the era that he played in 40 and a half
00:51:42Yeah, no, it's I mean, yeah, I I I don't know his finances. I'm not you know, how we invested in fred van vliet
00:51:49That's fred van vliet's salary this year
00:51:54But here's the here's the thing though like you talk about the nba inside the nba itis
00:51:59Like it means i'm, sorry. Brandon jennings and gilbert arenas and kenny martin and rashad mccain's like
00:52:04It means a little something different when you have charles barkley who is
00:52:08I I I beg kids to go back and look at chuck's rebounding numbers like he out rebounded shack in their primes like that's insane
00:52:15Shaq's a multi-champion, right? Kenny smith champion like those guys have the resumes but brandon. Jennings doesn't have a resume
00:52:23Like that's the thing that I don't like dude
00:52:25You don't you don't have the resume and then to get to the the back to like the coaching point these guys go into
00:52:30Podcasts instead of coaching look at doug christie, right doug christie who most
00:52:36young
00:52:37Zillennials have no idea
00:52:40That guy was I know who his wife is
00:52:43yeah, but that's like go back and watch the king's games when he when him and mike bibby and chris weber and voddy divac and
00:52:49Bobby jackson those guys were awesome. Yeah, they were going up against an insanely talented lakers team and took them to the brink
00:52:57They lost totally get it
00:52:59but they
00:53:00Like doug the you see doug christie as the head coach of the kings is super cool to me
00:53:05and yeah, and and he did he liked that path instead of
00:53:08Getting on a podcast and trying to take down jason tatum and yeah edwards, you know
00:53:14Hanging and guys, you know, let's say when you start hanging guy got the current players
00:53:20Like you're you're you're killing your chance
00:53:23Of being employed in the league the league pays a lot of people's bills like whether it be obviously the players
00:53:30but coaches scouts
00:53:33um, you know
00:53:35whatever you want to do you want to coach in a g league if you have to coach in a g like there's a ways
00:53:39to make a living and be
00:53:42A long time through the nba you want to get into you know, be a assistant general man. Like there's so many ways
00:53:49The league can offer you
00:53:51To have a salary you don't have to work a nine to five
00:53:55You just have to work within for your team or be a scout or whatever
00:53:59And these guys to me are just blowing an opportunity and who cares they may maybe they don't want that
00:54:04I just think there's something to
00:54:06A lot of these guys are unhappy with their their with how their career ended
00:54:11They're unhappy with the money that these guys made because brandon jennings is if he's 25 now, he's probably making
00:54:19He's probably making 30 million a year he's making tyler hero money, right and and
00:54:24And he's you know, why cannot be you know, like how come I didn't make that like you said out of 40 million
00:54:30Over his career. How much does he have left? How much you know, I think he maxed out of what he made
00:54:37The most in his career 8.3 million was the most he made that's mid-level exception money now
00:54:44And that was seven or eight years that's 2 15 16, so that's 10 years ago almost 10 years ago like
00:54:51The those salaries have gone up the league's gotten popular
00:54:55uh that new collective bargain agreement that one year where
00:55:00The the players refused to to escalate slowly
00:55:05And so they said we don't want our all our money now
00:55:07So whoever was a free agent in the summer of 16 cashed in big time
00:55:13And none of those guys, you know, evan turner remember he got 5 and 70 from portland. I mean, um
00:55:20And I don't think he finished that contract
00:55:23I know luol ding didn't finish that contract with the lakers
00:55:27timothy
00:55:28Mozgov the 4 and 64 he got that's what got mitch kupchak fired in la like there was so much
00:55:36That's happened in the 10 years and 15 years since these guys have played. I think these guys are just upset
00:55:42And they're bitter
00:55:44Jason tatum's making 50 million a year like, you know
00:55:48He was born at the right time. Jalen brown's making 300 million over five like
00:55:53You can't hate hate the game. I'll hate the player like you can't
00:55:58Be resentful
00:55:59You've got to understand it's their time
00:56:02somebody
00:56:03Now I don't know you you guys tell me
00:56:06How how old is the first hundred million dollar player in the nba?
00:56:11Oh
00:56:12This is oh, what a question
00:56:15Uh, is this wemby crack this at some point with the way that he's going it's wimby. So it's wimby
00:56:22Or is this kid 16 somewhere like
00:56:26Who is the how old is the first hundred million dollar a year player because we're up to 60, right?
00:56:3363
00:56:35So five to seven to eight years maybe
00:56:41That's what kind of resentment is that going to bring
00:56:44holy cow
00:56:45I mean that's going to transcend sports too. I mean you have like otani and and and soto are making you know
00:56:51a kajillion dollars per year now, I mean it's just
00:56:56Well, think about what the highest paid hockey player will be making at the time. Hello
00:57:01Nothing close not even a fifth
00:57:05Do you remember the uh, just you know, it's opposite end of the spectrum
00:57:08You're talking about 100 million dollars a year, obviously, but do you remember the uh, the nba's first hundred million dollar contract?
00:57:15Was it juan howard, right? One hour 1996. Yeah
00:57:21Seven years 105 or something like that people thought it was insane, you know
00:57:29At least you got rid of those long contracts too. Those are tough. Yeah. So hey, I mean
00:57:33Uh, shall we make 70?
00:57:36Didn't uh, soto gets so good 70 a year
00:57:40Uh, I don't think it's 70 based on because he's got like a 14-year contract
00:57:45That's gonna be and then all these deferrals, you know
00:57:47Which is I think the funniest part of this whole thing is we can defer this all these payments 65 over 15 with soto
00:57:53Yeah, yeah, but that's the thing like
00:57:56There's I think there's a level of resentment. There's a level of just
00:58:00You know guys watching these podcasts and these other podcasts and these guys just taking shots at each other
00:58:07and and then I think it's
00:58:09The locker room talk element you get a bunch of former players
00:58:12With no filter and they're just talking and you know
00:58:16And I and I you know, you got you literally have
00:58:20You literally have kwame brown
00:58:23on his like on youtube ripping lebron james, you know, like
00:58:27like
00:58:28You know, I I just you know i'm saying and i'm i'm a guy i'm not a big like
00:58:34Kwame was a bus. I think I didn't really put a real bad position
00:58:38Being jordan's first draft pick and going straight to the league. You probably should have went to florida's
00:58:43What he signed with he probably shouldn't need more maturity and he lasted 12 years in the league
00:58:47He wasn't a complete like, you know bust but you know, he's he's up there ripping lebron. Some of these guys who are now
00:58:55who were
00:58:56Serviceable players are just like you like you said like brandon are taking just shots at guys
00:59:01So you hope for my sake personally selfishly that tatum doesn't blame quote-unquote the media for what brandon jennings said
00:59:10and that's something you may pull aside and hey jason like
00:59:13I ain't saying that and I ain't right there. That's a former player
00:59:16That's one of your brethren not to be funny, but like
00:59:19Just because it was on the podcast does not make him a media member
00:59:23so
00:59:26100 I mean, it's all again whether it's resentment or just sort of looking for
00:59:31Relevancy like hey, I still exist, you know, that's yes
00:59:34I think I think it's a combination of that adam. I think it's it's
00:59:39You know celebrity is a drug and these guys want to be popular. They want to still be in the spotlight
00:59:43They want to be respected
00:59:45Some athletes are very good from walking away from the game and never seeing them again
00:59:51Or you only see them in a reunion
00:59:53And they're going to private practice big business and they they do what they do and they've handled their money
00:59:58well, and they live comfortable lives and you see them here and there and yeah, how you doing and there's guys who
01:00:05Are like no, I still need to be a part of this. I still need y'all still need to know who I am and
01:00:10That's a problem
01:00:12Yeah, no, it's uh, it's funny. I just you know, whatever we can go on forever on this
01:00:16but i'm just thinking about now again, like, you know chuck and
01:00:20And and shack especially but kenny is you know, obviously part of it like these I mean these guys are entertainers, you know
01:00:26They're like chuck doesn't chuck and shack couldn't name half the players in the league or tell you who they play for
01:00:32And we'll readily admit that it's like, you know, and it's just to heaven's point like in the nfl
01:00:38They're just they're a bunch of podcasts. Hell like brian hoyer and david andrews have a podcast
01:00:43I don't know who listens to it, but it exists, but they're not out there taking shots at guys in the nfl
01:00:49Those are few and far between like you can have kg podcast you can have like the you know
01:00:54all the smoke podcasts and stuff like all all that stuff and in the nfl, it's like
01:00:59it's like the show that you know ocho and and
01:01:03Sharp do like that's that's it. You know, that's and they're and they're talking about
01:01:08You know sexual positions off instagram live and stuff like they're not even talking about the sport half the time
01:01:14So it's you know, it's just uh, I think it was some value there guys
01:01:20from these podcasts when guys would tell stories from back in the day that they
01:01:25Could not tell during their playing days whether and some of them were funny
01:01:30sad
01:01:31all the above all playing my first time playing like when guys used to be
01:01:36Were more mostly telling their story. Hey, what was your introduction?
01:01:40What was your welcome to the nba or what was your welcome to the nfl moment?
01:01:44oh, I went I had to you know went head up and try to tackle jerome bettis and
01:01:49got a concussion like it was all these funny stories or
01:01:52stories about
01:01:53The life that I think we're all fascinated with
01:01:57Or you want to hear what was like for a guy to go up against kobe for the first time and things like that
01:02:02But now
01:02:03It's shifted from that
01:02:05to
01:02:06It's from from that to like
01:02:09You know
01:02:10this guy sucks and and and oh I could take this guy and oh if he played in my day like
01:02:15it becomes the the delusional thinking and the like
01:02:19We we talked about it like jones like like, you know
01:02:22You were you thought you were a better player than you really were
01:02:25And oh this guy needs to do this
01:02:27But he's like a five-time all-star and you didn't make any all-star games like, you know
01:02:32And then you got current player. You got the draymond green green podcast who's just draymond's laying guys out, you know
01:02:38That he doesn't like okay. Here's a list of guys. I don't like and here's why I don't like them
01:02:43And here's why they suck like, you know
