Celtics reporter Noa Dalzell recaps the Celtics 118-114 loss to the 76ers in the latest episode of You Got Boston. That includes the good (Jayson Tatum’s play, Al Horford’s continued reliability, Derrick White finds his rhythm) and the bad (Kristaps Porzingis exits another game due to injury and the Celtics’ defensive intensity is just not there). Joe Mazzulla and Jayson Tatum acknowledged the Celtics consistency is not where it needs to be — and the season seems to be at somewhat of an inflection point.

00:00What's up everyone, this is Noah Delzel and I'm here with a post-game version of You Got
00:25Boston here to recap the Celtics' 118-114 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
00:31Still here at TD Garden where the Celtics just lost, I think, I don't want to say one
00:35of their worst games of the season because there have certainly been worse losses, but
00:39it was their fourth loss in seven consecutive games, you know, three of four.
00:44And I think this was the first one where you could kind of feel the players, Joe Mizzoula
00:48talking about how, you know, the effort is not maybe where it exactly needs to be, the
00:53consistency is not quite where it needs to be defensively, there's a certain level of
00:56ownership that's not there.
00:58And so far with these losses, we really haven't seen it go in that direction.
01:01We haven't seen anybody be super outspoken, and they weren't super outspoken, but I think
01:06there was a sense of honesty about the fact that this is not a stretch of great basketball
01:11for the Celtics.
01:12So I'm going to keep these episodes short, probably just 20-minute reactions, and just
01:17talk about kind of the good things and the bad things that we saw in this game, and then
01:20just any takeaways from the post-game press conferences.
01:23So you can find these podcasts on my YouTube channel, on You Got Boston, or also on CLNS
01:28Media.
01:29And normally I'll be doing these from home, but they still have the court assembled today
01:32in Petey Garden, so figured I'd just stay here and do the reaction show from here.
01:38So I'll start with the good things, because today they were more bad than good, which
01:41has not been the case covering this team over the last year and a half.
01:45I think the one positive is Jason Tatum has been playing really at a high level of basketball.
01:52Tonight he finished with 32 points on 11 and 20 shooting.
01:55He shot four of eight from three.
01:56He's finding some consistency from beyond the arc, which is great to see.
02:0015 rebounds, that's back-to-back games for him where he's had 15 rebounds.
02:05And overall, I think that just offensively, he's finding his rhythm, he's not forcing
02:08things.
02:09In fact, I would have probably liked to see him shoot more than he did in this game, just
02:14because I think at certain points he kind of had the hot hand and the team, I don't
02:18want to say went away from him, but he wasn't able to kind of consistently find a good rhythm
02:22there.
02:23And I don't usually feel that.
02:24I feel like usually he's able to kind of continue asserting himself if he has it.
02:28So Tatum's play just in general during this recent stretch has been a bright spot in what
02:32it has otherwise been a pretty disappointing couple weeks of basketball on both ends for
02:37the Celtics.
02:39I'll also just shout out Al Horford, who was a plus 22 in 33 minutes.
02:44It's pretty remarkable that at his age, he's still able to give the Celtics such high quality
02:50minutes.
02:51They were outscored by 26 in the 15 minutes that he didn't play.
02:57And so that's substantial.
02:59And Bede was a minus 18 in this game, even though Joel Embiid, I thought, was pretty
03:04strong in general, considering the fact he's missed so much time.
03:07That was the result.
03:08So Joel Embiid finished with 27 points on 8 of 15 shooting, and ultimately that stuck
03:13out to me as actually something you would live with, just considering how effective
03:18Al was on that end.
03:20So I think you're looking at a Celtics team that has a couple of guys that have been individually
03:25struggling.
03:26Drew Hall, they didn't play in this game.
03:28Christoph Porzingis played in the first half and then tweaked his ankle like 90 seconds
03:34into this one and then just didn't come back at all.
03:37And I think at halftime, he probably got evaluated and Joe said he didn't have much
03:41of an update, but Porzingis was questionable to return with an ankle or doubtful to return,
03:46I should say, was the official injury update with an ankle injury and never came back into
03:51this game.
03:52And that's just another game now that's kind of been piling up where he's just not able
03:58to finish these games out.
03:59He has played consistent minutes and has come back from this initial left leg injury, but
04:06he hasn't been able to string together four or five games where he's just healthy.
04:10And so that has stood out and that's why Al was so important in this one.
04:13But ultimately, it wasn't enough, despite I think Lou Cornette gave good minutes and
04:17Emilia Cicada was fine in his minutes as well.
04:18So it wasn't really any of those guys' fault, but you kind of need him in these kinds of
04:23matchups, especially with Drew out and guys just not playing at the level that we're used
04:28to them playing.
04:29Technically, I'm supposed to still be on the good section.
04:32But I think the one other thing I was going to mention was Derek White has really struggled
04:35with this shot of late, and he was able to find a rhythm tonight, shot 5 of 10 from beyond
04:40the arc.
04:41And just in general, I think these last few games, he's been finding more of a groove
04:45offensively.
04:46He finishes with 21 in this one.
04:48So that's the things I think that stuck out.
04:51I mean, you have to also like the response, but ultimately this team fell behind by as
04:55many as 16.
04:57You saw them tie things up going into the fourth quarter, and then the 76ers began that
05:03period on an 18 to 2 run.
05:06And that's really unusual to see the Celtics in those big moments on a national TV game
05:10on Christmas in front of a really riled up fan base to see them come out so flat.
05:15And it was all done when Embiid was off the floor.
05:18The Celtics kind of were taken advantage of by the 76ers bench players.
05:22Caleb Martin, stop me if you've heard this before, but he finishes with 23 points on
05:288 of 11 shooting in this one shot, 7 of 9 from 3, and he's been really struggling with
05:32this shot.
05:33So that certainly stood out.
05:35Tyrese Maxey was sensational in this game.
05:38He scored 33 points on 12 of 13 shooting.
05:40They really didn't have an answer for him, and he kind of burned them with a minute to
05:44go with one second on the shot clock.
05:46Tyrese Maxey was able to shake both Derek White and Pritchard for a wide open layup.
05:50And so that was certainly one of those defensive breakdowns that we're quite familiar with
05:57at this point that we've seen quite a few of throughout these last few games.
06:01To me, I think the Celtics' defense was the worst that it's been in quite some time.
06:06They broke a bunch of records.
06:08They actually didn't have any steals until the final three minutes.
06:11No steals in the first half was the first time they've done that since the 90s, which
06:17that was pretty remarkable to watch.
06:18And honestly, it matches the eye test.
06:20Sometimes, you know, the defensive stats don't always back up what you feel like you're seeing
06:24on the floor.
06:25And in this game, I felt like just energy wasn't there.
06:28And it was kind of hard to believe because I think with a team like this and a game like
06:33this, you would think that they would just come out ready to play just because of the,
06:36you know, you're playing on Christmas, you're playing against a team that maybe has been
06:39struggling but is all healthy and is a conference rival and has been for many years now.
06:45And the guy that honestly stood out to me was Jalen Brown, who I've given him, you know,
06:50I've been so impressed by his performances over the last year and a half on that end,
06:54on the defensive end.
06:55He seemed really disengaged in the first half, both offensively and defensively.
06:58And he came alive in the third quarter, scored 14 in that period.
07:02But you really, you know, you saw down the stretch when they needed to come back from
07:06that fourth quarter deficit, all of a sudden, you know, there was just another gear that
07:10they stepped into.
07:11And Jalen was a big part of that, Peyton Pritchard was a big part of that, everybody really was.
07:16But it took until their backs were really against the wall to see that defensive effort
07:21that I think at points last year were what this team was really used to and what kind
07:27of we became used to watching as the media.
07:29So, you know, I think the defense is what I'll be watching, obviously, offensively,
07:34this is not the same team that we saw last year.
07:37They were the second best three-point shooting team last season, and this season they're
07:4116th in the NBA.
07:43And so that's a substantial difference, it's just three-point percentage.
07:47And Joe Mazzullo was asked about that pregame and he didn't read, he said he's not going
07:50to kind of read too much into it, and that it's not a huge sample, and that he's comfortable
07:55with the guys taking the shots.
07:58But I think, you know, the offensive thing you can live with, the defensive slip, I think
08:01is where it's a little bit harder to understand it because it's less variable.
08:05You should be able to control, you know, your defensive intensity and effort and connectivity.
08:10And yes, they were without Drew Holiday today, and, you know, obviously he's important to
08:14what they do on that end, and Porzingis didn't play that second half, but they still have
08:18enough from a personal standpoint, in my opinion, to play consistent basketball on
08:22that end always.
08:23And it's a long season, you're not going to see that effort every single night, but I
08:27think we've just reached the point where I'm willing to say it's like a little bit more
08:31than just a bad week.
08:33And I actually asked Tatum if he felt like it's just a bad week of work, or if it's just
08:37one of those kind of things that just you chalk it up to an 82-game season, and he didn't
08:43really, that wasn't actually his answer.
08:45I thought he might say like, yeah, it's just a bad week of work, it was a little bit of
08:47a cop out.
08:48And he said that last year during a stretch of games that culminated in that bad Lakers
08:54loss where they got blown out by a no LeBron James, no Anthony Davis Lakers.
09:00But he said, we just got to man up and look in the mirror and figure out some things that
09:02we got to do better at.
09:03Everybody's fully capable, we've always done a really good job of responding.
09:08And so there's no panic, but I think that they are acknowledging the fact that there
09:11are some habits and things that they have to address.
09:14And we just were, you know, it's the first time that we're hearing that language come
09:18out of their locker room.
09:19And I think it's a good thing because, you know, we've noticed it for a couple of games
09:22now, but the fact that they're willing to call it out is, and not in any, nobody's getting
09:26their fingers pointed at anybody, but I think that it stands out as like maybe a turning
09:30point here.
09:31And maybe it won't be.
09:32They have a couple, you know, home games coming up here.
09:36And I think it's an opportunity for them to string together some wins before they go out
09:38west for a really difficult road trip.
09:40So we'll see.
09:41But I actually thought that the fact that they were able to express the fact that this
09:45is not the level of consistency and intensity defensively that they're used to, it stood
09:50out as generally a positive thing to me.

10:55PrizePix, run your game.
10:59So I think we're looking at a stretch of games here where they host the Pace Series on Friday
11:02and on Sunday.
11:03And there's a team that's given them some challenges over the past few seasons and we
11:08talk about it all the time that it almost doesn't need to be said, but you know, that
11:12sweep in the conference finals was the most competitive series that they actually had.
11:17And this is a team that's been trending upwards.
11:19They had a really rough start to the season, Tyrese Halliburton and the rest of the group,
11:23but they've been a lot better of late.
11:25And so just thinking about this as a kind of big picture way, I think this Celtics team
11:30has an opportunity to shrink together a couple of wins and then on Tuesday they host the
11:35Rafters on New Year's Eve.
11:37And so all three of those games, you could easily kind of start a win streak here before
11:40you go out West where you're facing a really difficult slate with the Rockets, the Thunder,
11:45the Nuggets.
11:46I'll be out West kind of covering those games on the ground.
11:49And so I think the big question that everybody has watching this team is like, is this just
11:53what happens when you win a championship and then you play in, you know, through June and
11:57then you, some of you go to the Olympics and play there and you have a short off season
12:02and you feel a certain level of confidence that's maybe a little bit unshakable.
12:06Is this just what happens?
12:08Or is this the sign like this just isn't the same team as last year and the end result
12:11won't be the same?
12:13And so where I land on this ultimately is that it is the same team and I don't think
12:20anything substantial has changed and they've dealt with a little bit of injuries, but nothing
12:24significantly worse than what you would expect or worse than other teams have dealt with.
12:29But you have to replicate that same level of hunger and desperation that you had last
12:33season.
12:34And I think that part of what made that group really special last year is that they were
12:38coming off of a terrible, terrible exit that we know motivated Jalen Brown and we know
12:43it motivated everybody on the roster that they lost in seven games, were humiliated
12:46on their home floor, eliminated to Miami and again, short of their first championship as
12:51a core.
12:52And that motivated them and that they were hungry almost every night last season, maybe
12:56a handful of games where they came out flat, but for the most part, you were watching a
12:59really desperate team and it played into the playoffs and then you saw them become a really
13:03confident team too.
13:05But I think the desperation almost happened first.
13:08Right now they're a confident team, but I don't know that they're as desperate and that
13:12can change really quickly.
13:13But you don't want to say like, let's just coast through the regular season and then
13:17in April we'll turn it on because we've seen historically that's just not how it works.
13:21These habits take time to build and bad habits over time result in bad habits in the playoffs
13:25and they result in teams not winning the championship.
13:28And so right now it's December.
13:31They still have a pretty good record, I mean a good record, they're 22-8, they're the second
13:36seed in the East, third best record overall, but you go out West and you split those games
13:41and now we're having a little bit of a different conversation.
13:43So I feel very optimistic about this season, the season's forecast and kind of where things
13:48are headed, especially given the fact that this group has such a body of work associated
13:54with it, like ultimately guys like Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown, there's no reason why I wouldn't
13:59believe that they can turn it up because we've seen it happen so many times.
14:03My big concern, honestly, with this group right now is Kristaps Porzingis' health moving
14:08forward and not the ankle tweak from this game because I don't have any reason to believe
14:12this is a serious injury, but the fact that it seems like he just can't play five games
14:17in a row without hurting something, and there's similar types of injuries, lower leg injuries,
14:22and so I'm not, yeah, I'm not, I don't want to say that I'm panicking about it, but I
14:27think you do start to think if you're a Brats evens, if you're a Domazula, that you want
14:31to have some contingency plan in place that's more than just assuming that Porzingis is
14:35going to be healthy in the playoffs because we've just seen now, since last year's regular
14:39season he hasn't been able to be healthy for extended stretches, you know, he came back
14:43in the playoffs, got hurt within two games, you know, hurt his calf, comes back in the
14:48finals, two games later gets hurt again, misses the first, you know, 20 or 15 or so games
14:53in this regular season, and then since then he's been kind of on and off, so it stands
14:57out to me as is the biggest question about this team right now.
15:01If there is a question, it's that, and then do you have enough to kind of compensate for
15:06it?
15:07You had it last year in the playoffs, and I felt like part of it was the run that they
15:09had, they didn't have to go up against guys like Giannis and Embiid, not that Porzingis
15:13is your answer for those guys, but it helps to have more size, and then the other part
15:17of it is just the fact that from an injury standpoint, like, they were otherwise really
15:22healthy, so it was just him, and so they were able to compensate for that, and you can't
15:25be certain that that's going to happen again too, so I think that's the thing that stands
15:28out, obviously off the bench you're not getting a whole lot right now, Pritchard really struggled
15:32in this one, he was 0 of 8 from 3, Hauser is just not getting off looks, that's, it's
15:37kind of been the most frustrating thing to watch, because you're talking about a guy
15:39who's one of the best hit-one-shooters in the league, I mean, he took 0 shots in the
15:43last course, Orlando, and took 1 shot in this game, and I think part of that is his mobility
15:48and his back, he's playing more limited minutes, he played just 13 minutes tonight, defensively
15:53he's being exploited a little bit more, so that's part of what's keeping him off the
15:56floor, but also, I've said this a million times, but I think that whether or not Hauser
16:01is getting good looks is a great sign of how the Celtics offense is looking, whether it's
16:06a healthy offense, whether the ball is flying, whether the guys are moving or not.
16:11There's nothing I love more than going to watch Celtics games, NBA games, and just going
16:14to events in general, and I always use GameTime for all of my ticketing needs.
16:19GameTime has a new feature called GameTime Picks that makes getting tickets for live
16:22events even easier, GameTime Picks filters out all the fluff to show you only incredible
16:26deals on great seats, so you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of
16:30tickets.
16:31So right now I'm looking through the GameTime app, I see that there is a Christmas Day game,
16:36against the 76ers, and I can click on that and I can actually see not just what the seat
16:41options are, but what the view of the court will be, because GameTime offers seat views,
16:46where you get a panoramic view from your seat in the app before you buy.
16:49There's also a lowest price guarantee, where GameTime will credit you 110% of the difference,
16:54and there is all-in pricing, so you can actually see the total upfront price, no surprise fees
17:00at checkout.
17:01So I'm looking right now, usually my holiday gifts are tickets to different sporting events
17:05that I know my friends and family will be interested in, and I always use GameTime for
17:09all of those purchases.
17:11Take the guesswork out of buying tickets with GameTime, download the GameTime app, create
17:14an account, and use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.
17:18Terms apply, again, create an account and redeem code CLNS for $20 off.
17:24Download GameTime today, what time is it?
17:26GameTime.
17:27So I'm going to close shortly here, because we did do a post-game show on CLNS Media,
17:31you can find a full breakdown of this game.
17:34Also you can find all the press conferences on CLNS, so if you want to hear what Tatum,
17:38Al Horford, Joel Embiid had to say, all of that's on there.
17:43The last thing I will say though is that defending a championship is really hard, and I think
17:47there's a reason why nobody's won consecutive championships since the 2017 Warriors, and
17:52so it was never going to be just a smooth ride of domination without any issues.
17:56It was always going to be challenging, and I think that right now we're seeing there's
18:00a fork in the road, and there's an opportunity for them to respond to that adversity with
18:05a string of wins and just much better, much more desperation and connectivity defensively.
18:10Or you can see what happened to defending champions in this league, and that's you don't
18:14get back to the same place you were last year.
18:16We haven't seen anybody even make the conference finals in years now, so the norm in this league
18:20is actually, has become to win a championship and to come back the next season and not be
18:25the same.
18:26And I still think that this team has all the pieces and all the, you know, from the coaching
18:30staff to the star players to the depth at their best to defend that title, but I think
18:35that nobody should be kind of overly rattled to the fact that it's not a cakewalk, because
18:40it's just never meant to be a cakewalk.
18:42And so we'll see if there's any updates on Porzingis, we'll have updates on Friday from
18:46Shootaround, we'll have updates from the game on Friday as well, so you can continue kind
18:52of following along coverage.
18:53You can find me on Twitter, SnowDazzle, and on CLNS Media, we'll have all the press conferences
18:58from today's game.
18:59But I just wanted to close with that reminder, because ultimately, that's the reality of
19:04how these things go.
19:06And I think if you watch Tatum's post-game press conference, he reiterated this point
19:10many, many times, that they don't have any of the, you know, they don't have any shake
19:15in their confidence right now.
19:16They know they can respond, but they're also not going to pretend like there aren't issues.
19:19There are defensive things that they need to work through.
19:22And they've came up against a team, a 76ers team that I've been, I picked them as the
19:26number one challenge for the Celtics in the East, heading into the season.
19:30And now, you know, it hasn't looked like the best pick, but this game, I felt a little
19:35bit of vindication at least that I got what I was thinking.
19:38Because when Tyrese Mack is playing at the level that he was playing, Joel Embiid, I
19:41think has another gear that he's going to get to, and then you've got world players
19:43that at their best are Celtics killers, like Caleb Martin, you know, he's one of the scariest
19:47guys that can walk into this building, you know, and unfortunately, so there's pieces
19:51there that I think can make this team formidable.
19:54And part of it is just that, that you saw that and ultimately you lost by four points.
19:57So you were, they hung in there and I liked the fight down the stretch, maybe woke them
20:01up a little bit, and maybe that's something that they can carry forward to future games.
20:04So thanks for watching, thanks for following along, I'll continue to have post game reaction
20:08pods along with our post game show.
20:11Thanks, everyone.
20:12Enjoy your rest of your Christmas.
