00:00Cuba celebrates the 66th anniversary of the revolution that marked the beginning of a
00:11new era in the Caribbean island.
00:16In Yemen, Houthi forces shot down a US drone worth over 32 million dollars, the second
00:22such device struck in the last 72 hours.
00:29And in the United States, at least 10 people were killed and more than 30 injured after
00:34a multiple hit and run in New Orleans.
00:42Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana,
00:47Cuba.
00:48We begin with news.
00:49Cuba celebrates the 66th anniversary of the revolution that marked the beginning of a
00:53new era in the Caribbean island.
00:55This January 1st, Cuban citizens commemorate the beginning of a new era, led by Fidel Castro
01:01and Ernesto Che Guevara, who became symbols of resistance.
01:05During the day, the celebrations are accompanied by cultural events, parades and conferences
01:11that highlight the achievements and the challenges that still persist in the country.
01:17In this regard, for more than six decades, the Cuban people have faced significant challenges
01:22while they have achieved relevant progress in the areas of education and health.
01:31The Caribbean community, CARICAM, reiterated its support for Haiti, affirming that it will
01:36continue working to strengthen its national institutions and congratulating the country
01:41on the 221st anniversary of its independence.
01:46This way, CARICAM's Secretary General, Carla Barnett, expressed solidarity with the Haitian
01:51people and the community's willingness to collaborate with the Caribbean nation.
01:55In this regard, Barnett highlighted CARICAM's objective to help Haiti move forward in the
02:01search for peace, security and social progress.
02:04In addition, the Secretary General congratulated the Haitian people on 221 years of independence,
02:11stating that the date is a source of pride and celebration due to Haiti's indomitable
02:17resilience who persevered despite facing multiple challenges.
02:26Mexico lost the dispute panel with the United States and Canada in 2023 over the decree
02:31issued by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which prohibits the commercialization
02:37of genetically modified corn for human consumption.
02:41Antonio Aranda brings us details.
02:46President Claudia Sheinbaum informed that Mexico will continue to defend native corn
02:51after losing the dispute panel with the United States and Canada over the ban on the importation
02:56of transgenic corn for human consumption.
03:01Mexico is intrinsically linked culturally by our origin, by what our native peoples
03:06of yesterday and today are, and the resistance with corn.
03:10Corn is Mexico.
03:11That is why it is said that without corn there is no country.
03:14So protecting Mexico from planting transgenic corn is fundamental.
03:21There are already decrees, but now we want to take it to the Constitution and make it
03:25very clear that in Mexico it is forbidden to plant transgenic corn.
03:36Claudia Sheinbaum explained that one of her government's objectives is to guarantee
03:40self-sufficiency in corn for human consumption, taking care of corn biodiversity.
03:48We are impressed by what is most important for Mexico.
03:57Even though we evidently believe that it has health effects and that this must be decreased,
04:01but the part that is fundamental to protect is the seeding of corn in Mexico.
04:11Mexico is the cradle of corn domestication, which is why it is important to take care
04:16of the original genetic biodiversity, says this specialist.
04:22The Creole corn that is grown mainly in southeastern Mexico only has yields of one to five tons
04:28per hectare.
04:31That is why Mexico defends from 2020, when the decree published by President López Obrador
04:37came out, that the decree was more to prohibit glyphosate, but there was also a section that
04:42did not allow the importation of genetically modified corn.
04:51One consequence of banning the importation and planting of transgenic corn for human
04:56consumption could be the implementation of countervailing duties against Mexico.
05:00However, with the constitutional reform for the protection of white corn, Mexico can avoid
05:06the sanction.
05:10The government has established through President Scheinbaum and the Secretary of Agriculture
05:14that in February a constitutional law initiative will be in the Chamber of Deputies where the
05:19planting of genetically modified corn is prohibited, which does not contravene the treaty with
05:27the United States and Canada, but is a power of Mexico.
05:36In addition to the constitutional reform to protect native corn, Scheinbaum's government
05:40will promote agricultural production programs, provide free fertilizers and increase the
05:45creation of small and medium corn, bean and tomato producers, among other products.
05:53Congress also seeks to advance self-sufficiency in white corn, of which each Mexican consumes
05:58an average of 196 kilograms per year.
06:06As 2024 came to a close, several presidents of Latin America and the Caribbean bid farewell
06:11to the year by taking stock and announcing the most important projects for 2025.
06:17Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Colombian President Petro and Nicaraguan Vice President
06:21Rosario Murillo sent messages to their respective peoples.
06:25The Mexican President stressed that the challenges initiated by the Fourth Transformation will
06:31not take a step back.
06:34President Gustavo Petro referred to his achievements, highlighting that 2.5 million people came
06:39out of poverty in his country.
06:41For her part, the Nicaraguan Vice President shared the joint message of President Daniel
06:46Ortega, assuring that they concluded a year of commitment to peace.
06:55In Ecuador, relatives of the four children abducted by the military hold President Daniel
07:00Novoa responsible for their death.
07:02The Attorney General's Office confirmed that the human remains found in the coastal
07:07region belonged to the children.
07:09After 21 days of national commotion, the suspicions of many were proved right despite the government's
07:16covering attempts.
07:17Precisely, graphic evidence and witnesses were constantly dismissed by the head of state,
07:23the defense minister and the entire military high command, which referred to the serious
07:27crime as an incident.
07:29Furthermore, the relatives addressed President Novoa's decision to name the children national
07:34heroes, stressing it was made because he knew they were already dead.
07:44With the passing of time, outrage in Ecuador grows.
07:47After more than 11 hours, the Interior and Defense Ministries spoke about the crime that
07:53killed a promising youth football player, his brother and two friends, one of them only
07:5811 years old.
08:00After criminalizing them and their families, pointing to organized crime and questioning
08:04the responsibility of the parents, they were also laid with the official statement.
08:10It is worth mentioning that none of them apologized.
08:13President Daniel Novoa still does not mention them.
08:20And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
08:24TeleCity English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
08:28We'll be right back, stay with us!
08:43Welcome back to From the South.
08:57In Yemen, Houthi forces shot down a U.S. drone, a MQ-9 Raper, worth over $32 million, which
09:05constitutes the second such device struck in the last 72 hours.
09:09Precisely, the operation took place in the region of Marib, over its territorial waters,
09:14as confirmed by Yemeni military forces spokesman Yahya Zadeh.
09:18This is the 14th drone destroyed since the beginning of the operation to support Gaza.
09:24They also reiterated that they will maintain the defense strategy and will not cease the
09:29attacks until Israel's genocide in Palestine ends.
09:37In Palestine, a total of 45 patients from the Kanjini hospital in Gaza Strip were evacuated
09:43outside the Strip in order to receive medical treatment in the United Arab Emirates.
09:49The Palestinian Ministry of Health currently claims that several thousand people in Gaza
09:53are in need of medical treatment abroad as the health crisis in the region continues
09:58to worsen.
09:59The United Nations asserts that the situation has reached this point due to the constant
10:05and permanent attacks by the Israeli government on the Palestinian territory, which have severely
10:10weakened the country's infrastructure in various spheres, such as medicine and public health
10:15care, and have forced the country to close most of its hospitals, while those that remain
10:21in operation are only partially functioning and are facing a myriad of shortcomings.
10:32In Afghanistan, the Taliban have taken a further step in their offense against women's rights
10:37by announcing the closure of all non-governmental organizations employing women.
10:44The move, which comes on top of a previous ban on hiring Afghan women workers for alleged
10:50jihad violations, reflects a systematic pattern of repression since the regime took power
10:56in August 2021.
10:58The regime's Ministry of Economy has warned that any non-governmental organization that
11:03fails to comply with this new order will face revocation of its license to operate in the
11:09country.
11:10The United Nations has expressed its deep concern, stressing that these restrictions
11:14not only affect women but also exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, where
11:20millions are dependent on humanitarian assistance.
11:28On Wednesday, South Korean authorities confirmed the identification of all 179 victims of the
11:34Jeju Airplane crash.
11:36The Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Asian nation said that the five remaining
11:40unidentified victims had been recognized in the last few hours.
11:45In this regard, it specified it took forensic doctors four days to single out all the victims
11:51due to the conditions of the bodies as a result of the powerful explosion.
11:55The Jeju Air Flight 2216, which had taken off from Bangkok, Thailand, on December 29,
12:022024, was carrying a total of 175 passengers and six crew members, which had touched ground
12:09with its landing gear down and crashed into a wall outside the runway at Muan Airport
12:15in southwest Korea, leaving only two survivors.
12:23Italian authorities reported that at least 20 migrants are missing after a boat shipwreck
12:28off the island of Lampedusa.
12:30The Coast Guard said the chances of rescuing the missing people alive are very slim due
12:36to weather conditions.
12:37The first reports from the authorities showed that the boat left from Libya, heading for
12:42Europe through the Mediterranean Sea.
12:45The migrants were originally from Egypt, Syria and Sudan.
12:48The Interior Ministry reported that to date, Italy has received about 66,000 migrants on
12:55boats coming from North Africa.
13:02Let's take a second short break, but first, Telesur invites you to attend a special interview
13:07given by the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, to journalist Ignacio Ramonet,
13:12today at 5pm local time in Nicaragua and Mexico, at 6pm local time in Colombia, Ecuador and
13:18Cuba, also at 7pm in Venezuela and Bolivia, and at 8pm in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.
13:26Only on Telesur.
13:27We'll be right back, stay with us.
13:39Welcome back to From the South.
13:41In the United States, at least 10 people were killed and more than 30 injured after a multiple
13:46hit and run in New Orleans early on Wednesday.
13:50Emergency services reported that the driver of a truck was traveling at high speed and
13:55ran over multiple people celebrating New Year's Eve at Bourbon Street in the city's French
14:00Quartet.
14:02The perpetrator proceeded to get out of his vehicle and fire shots.
14:06At least two officers were injured as police responded to the attacker, who was then reportedly
14:11killed.
14:12In the aftermath of the incident, US President Joe Biden unveiled the FBI is proving the
14:18attack as an act of terrorism, while law enforcement are also investigating multiple suspected
14:24explosive devices linked to the hit and run.
14:33It did involve a man driving a pickup truck down Bourbon Street at a very fast pace and
14:40it was very intentional behavior.
14:44This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could.
14:49It was not a DUI situation.
14:52This is a more complex and more serious based on the information we have right now.
14:59Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara said in an end of year speech that French forces
15:06will withdraw from the West African nation in January, making it the latest country to
15:10end military ties with a former colonial power.
15:18We have decided on the concerted and organized withdrawal of French forces from Ivory Coast.
15:29As a result, the 43rd BIMA Marine Infantry Battalion at Port Bouette will be handed back
15:37to Ivory Coast's armed forces from January 2025.
15:43To mark this new stage in our army's life, I have decided to name this camp after General
15:48Ouattara Thomas Diaquin, a soldier with an exceptional career and the first ever Chief
15:54of Staff of the Ivorian Army.
15:59On Tuesday, Honduras demonstrated again in Serbia to protest against the accidental death
16:05of 15 people.
16:08Demonstrators gathered around the railway station in Novi Sad, some 70 kilometers from
16:13Belgrade, the country's capital.
16:15On November 1st, a section of the roof collapsed there, killing 15 people and injuring several
16:21others.
16:22A rally, which made 15 stops in memory of each of the victims, calls for political and
16:27criminal responsibility.
16:28On the same day, the Prosecutor's Office indicted 13 people, including the former Minister
16:33of Construction Goran Vesic.
16:40Russia has effectively ceased gas exports to Europe through Ukraine after Kyiv's refused
16:46to extend the existing transportation agreements.
16:49In regards to the measure that entered into force at 8 a.m. local time on January 1st,
16:55the Russian energy giant Gazprom confirmed that it is now technically and legally impossible
17:01to supply gas transiting through Ukraine.
17:04The end of the agreement, signed on December 30, 2019, and the termination of all deals
17:10between Gazprom and Neftogaz, was a unilateral Ukrainian decision, which the country's
17:16energy ministry called a historic event, that is taken in the interest of national
17:21security.
17:36In Argentina, among the many attacks by President Javier Milley on everything related to art
17:41and culture, cinema is perhaps the most damaged.
17:44Our correspondent Fabián Restivo has the details.
17:53This is Argentine film director Adrián Jaime.
17:56Telesur spoke to him to find out how things are going in the audiovisual world, one of
18:00the sectors under attack by the government of Javier Milley.
18:06It becomes difficult to counter everything because you are not on equal footing for the
18:10fight.
18:13These films recover, among other things, the memories of the popular struggles in Argentina,
18:19which makes Adrián Jaime one of the government's main targets.
18:25Adorni accused us of having received 15,000 US dollars to make a documentary film, which
18:30is not true.
18:31Our film is called Born on Them.
18:33It is about the Cordobaso.
18:35We reconstruct those two historic days with the pure archive material.
18:39We did all the sound, we were working on the sound during the whole pandemic.
18:43Less and less is being filmed.
18:45This year, five films were filmed via the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisuals,
18:50out of the usual 200.
18:57The Argentinean government has also established a series of prohibitions for filming.
19:02You can't talk about Perón, nor about the achievements of Kirchnerism, nor film with,
19:07for example, the popular singer Lali.
19:13There is a cultural battle, a battle that is not lost but is never settled.
19:17I don't believe that the 600,000 jobs that this industry generates, 600,000 direct jobs
19:24plus another 400,000 indirect jobs, an important portion of the GDP, where jobs are generated
19:30not only for those who are in front of the cameras, such as actors or directors, but
19:35for everything that is part of the audiovisual ecosystem.
19:38Hotels, logistics, carpenters, electricians, all of that, at some point, due to the systematic
19:45attacks that have been taking place, is surely going to emerge as a second criticism.
19:56The director's concern is not only cinema, of course.
20:02Argentina's film industry is going to be diminished.
20:06Today, we are in a process of resistance and of seeing how it can be sustained.
20:12We are in a process of resistance and of seeing how it can be sustained.
20:19Today, we are in a process of resistance and of seeing how it can be sustained.
20:27We are trying to leverage what they are trying to destroy or what they have broken.
20:32International entities, the most diverse in Latin America, Europe and Asia, have declared
20:37themselves in favor of sustaining, as Leonardo Sparaglia said, not only Argentina's cinema,
20:42but sustaining Argentina.
20:46From Buenos Aires, for Telesur, Fabián Rey.
