This evening and overnight, a band of persistent heavy rain pushes over Scotland, turning to snow in the north and in upland areas. This will be accompanied by some strong gusty winds along exposed coasts in the far north and northwest. Through to tomorrow morning we will start to see this heavy rain move into Northern Ireland as well. Elsewhere, a dry and cloudy night across England and Wales. Feeling mild in the south, but turning chilly in northern Scotland. An amber rain warning is in effect for parts of Scotland tomorrow. - This is the Met Office Weather forecast for the evening of 30/12/2024. Bringing you tonight's weather forecast is Honor Criswick.

00:00Hello there, good evening. As we head towards the New Year's celebrations, I'm afraid it's
00:05a very unsettled forecast ahead. Multiple Met Office warnings in force, including an
00:10amber warning issued for New Year's Eve for rain across parts of Scotland. So do take
00:14care if you're travelling around for any festivities. And as we head into this evening, we'll see
00:19those outbreaks of rain push their way into parts of Scotland, falling as snow mainly
00:23across hills but also to lower levels too, mainly across northern parts of Scotland.
00:28And where we do see those outbreaks of rain turning rather heavy and persistent at times,
00:33where we do see that amber warning issued across parts of Scotland. And then through
00:36the early hours of the morning, we'll start to see that heavy rain start to creep into
00:40parts of Northern Ireland too. But across much of England and Wales, a dry night on
00:44offer, plenty of cloud around though that is going to keep temperatures up. But a chilly
00:48start across northern parts of Scotland where we do see that snowfall. And then for New
00:53Year's Eve itself, an unsettled day ahead for many of us. Plenty of blustery winds across
00:58the far north. We could see gusts of around 60, maybe even 70 miles per hour across parts
01:02of Northern England as those outbreaks of rain move through. They will eventually clear
01:07parts of Scotland but plenty of blustery showers here. Once again, these could be heavy at
01:11times and falling as snow at times too, particularly across the far north of Scotland. Shetland
01:15for example, seeing multiple snow showers. Temperatures up by a degree or two, particularly
01:20across northern parts of Scotland but often feeling rather chilly under those cloudier
01:24skies. Through into the evening, we'll see these outbreaks of rain slowly shift their
01:29way further across parts of England and Wales. Though it does generally stall across northern
01:35parts of Wales and northern parts of England for midnight itself if you are out celebrating
01:39New Year's Eve. And across the far north, once again, plenty of showers. These merging
01:44into longer spells of rain at times too. And once again, we could see some snow and we
01:47do have a risk of ice also for northern parts of Scotland. But across the south, once again,
01:53largely dry, though plenty of cloud around as we head towards the new year. Then through
01:58the early hours, once again, those outbreaks of rain still continuing across northern parts
02:02of Wales, northern parts of England and central parts too. Once again, this rather heavy and
02:07persistent at times, still those showers continuing across the far north. And slightly milder
02:12across the south where we see those cloudier skies linger on but turning very chilly indeed
02:16across the far north of Scotland as we start to introduce a brisk northerly flow here.
02:22And then for New Year's Day itself, once again, outbreaks of rain. These slowly edging
02:26towards the south and southeast, still heavy and persistent at times. And to the north
02:30of this, it is going to be turning very cold. So if we see any blustery showers moving through,
02:35these likely falling as snow across hilly areas and very blustery amongst these showers
02:40too. So feeling very cold in the wind. But across the far south, milder, yes, but it
02:45is going to be a wet afternoon on offer for the new year.
02:50So as we head into next week, once again, this cold northerly flow that will slowly
02:54shift its way towards much of the country. So we'll start to see more sunshine for the
02:58end of the week, yes, but plenty of sunshine. These likely falling as snow and it is going
03:03to be feeling cold, particularly in those brisk northerly winds. But of course, for
