00:00The changes in the digital world and advancements in existing digital platforms are ongoing.
00:06For some young people and digital learners, it's hard to keep up with the new technology.
00:13Together with an academic professional, we will discuss the new digital frontiers
00:19and his initiatives for media and information literacy.
00:25What are the tips and knowledge that he will share
00:29that will help in using digital media more carefully and intelligently?
00:34Let's find out on MLL 101!
00:42Here we have with us today, MLL advocate and educator, Dr. Jomar Redubla.
00:49Good morning, Doc, and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:53Good morning, PP.
00:54Good morning!
00:55Maybe it's a good idea to share Layman's perspective on what the new digital frontiers mean
01:04and why it's important to focus on it now.
01:10Thank you, Phino.
01:11The new digital frontiers are about new possibilities and challenges
01:16like the rapid development of digital technology.
01:20Currently, the digital world is constantly changing and evolving.
01:25It's important to pay attention to learn how to navigate the new technologies correctly and responsibly.
01:35This includes the experience of new technologies like artificial intelligence.
01:43It's important to understand their effects on our personal lives, including our work,
01:50as well as our safety and privacy concerns.
01:56We need to be more prepared and equipped with the right knowledge
02:00so that we can use it more effectively and avoid dangers.
02:07One of the things you discuss in your talks is digital footprints.
02:12In your opinion, how do digital footprints affect our online privacy and personal security?
02:21Digital footprints are information and data that we leave online.
02:28For example, our social media posts, our birthday celebrations,
02:35and our transactions on the internet or websites we visit.
02:40Even though we don't realize it, it has a big effect on our online privacy and security.
02:48If we don't pay attention to our information,
02:52if we have digital footprints, it can be used against us.
02:56For example, stealing your identity,
03:00online scams, and other forms of cybercrime.
03:05Sometimes, our information becomes public or accessible even if we don't expect it.
03:12What we expect from this is that we should be more careful
03:17in sharing personal data and using privacy settings in our online accounts.
03:23Doc, another relevant topic that you mentioned is artificial intelligence,
03:28especially generative AI.
03:31How does it change our communication and creative field?
03:36Go ahead.
03:38That's a challenging topic, Tiffy.
03:40Anyway, generative AI is an artificial intelligence that can create new content,
03:47such as text, images, music, and video.
03:51It has a big impact on the field of communication and creativity.
03:56Through generative AI, content creation becomes faster and more accessible.
04:02For example, with just one click, we can create an article, artwork, story, or even music.
04:10We don't need to spend a lot of time or resources.
04:17There are many aspects that need to be considered,
04:21such as ethics and accountability in the use of AI-generated content.
04:26Of course, we shouldn't use AI in the wrong way.
04:32In particular, in the field of communication,
04:35it changes how we interact and get information.
04:39If we get information from AI, we will just share it.
04:44Again, we need to be more responsible in using generative artificial intelligence.
04:53Doc, as an advocate of knowledge in the new digital frontiers,
04:57what are your tips for young people in using AI tools?
05:04For young people, the most important tip is to be more responsible in using AI tools
05:10because we won't be able to stop the development of AI tools
05:15because that is already part of the progress of technology.
05:18Sometimes, when we quickly access technology,
05:22we lose our attention because we are very excited to use it.
05:27First, we need to learn how to do research.
05:30We need to know how AI tools work.
05:35We shouldn't just rely on all the information we see online
05:39because artificial intelligence can also create fake news,
05:44misinformation, and the like.
05:47Second, we should set our limitations in using AI,
05:51especially in social media and online platforms,
05:55so that we can avoid breaching privacy or using wrong information.
06:02Most importantly, we should be more careful in sharing our personal data.
06:07Lastly, we should always think about the consequences of our actions we do online.
06:17Lastly, what are the most important MIL competencies that the public should develop?
06:27Okay.
06:29Our curriculum in basic education that teaches media and information literacy is very good.
06:38I suggest that we improve critical thinking and media discernment.
06:47One of the aspects that I often discuss in my talks or in our groups
06:53is the formation of responsible online communities
06:56where we teach each one how to verify information
07:01and how to navigate the digital spaces safely and ethically.
07:07The MIL is important because it gives us the skills and practices
07:14to be more careful and to be more informed consumers of the media.
07:21We should learn how to identify what information is biased,
07:26what information is disinformation,
07:28and if this information is propaganda, especially in social media,
07:33so that we can make decisions based on the right and truthful information.
07:41Alright, Doc. First of all, thank you for the tips you gave.
07:48And second, congratulations for being a doctor, of course, Dr. Jomar.
07:55I saw your journey, your studies, and you deserve all the achievements and success you have
08:01as a director of one of the renowned schools and universities here in the Philippines.
08:06On that note, thank you so much, Dr. Jomar, for being with us this morning.
08:12Sorry, Spia, let's remember that the study of the MIL is not just about the knowledge
08:18and knowledge of the media and information landscape that we have today.
08:23This continues because, as we mentioned earlier,
08:26technology and traditional and digital media are constantly changing and evolving.
08:32That's what we're talking about in MIL 101.
