00:00Hey what's up y'all, MKBHD here, and today, Samsung had their expected summer unpacked
00:07event in July, and they announced two new phones and three new wearable devices.
00:14Well, it's more than that if you count the small and the large sizes, but a lot of stuff.
00:18I got to go hands-on with all of it, and so here are my first impressions.
00:20So I'm going to start with the two new phones.
00:22This was the reveal of the newest foldables, so you got Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6.
00:28And in general, these phones are very much still minor iterations on top of the last
00:32year.
00:33Shocker.
00:34I was actually thinking about that, like this kind of feels like a dismissive way of saying
00:37it, like, oh, Samsung's settled, they're not really changing anything.
00:40Which is kind of true, but also on the other hand, these are still phones that are at the
00:44forefront of two of some of the most advanced parts of the tech world, which is foldables
00:50and AI.
00:51So, there's that.
00:52So yeah, the Fold 6, the big one, looks just like the Fold 5, you know, square up the sides
00:57a bit more, change up the look of the camera housing just a little bit, and give it slightly
01:02thinner bezels on the inside and the outside, and that makes the cover screen just a tiny
01:06bit more usable.
01:07And now both of these screens get up to 2600 nits now.
01:10Give it the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, give it some new colors, and that's about it.
01:15You got yourself a new generation.
01:16I mean, there's a couple other even smaller things, like, you know, a slightly better
01:20hinge.
01:21There is a new ultra-wide camera, and the square sides, I think, give it a little bit
01:25more interior volumes, which allows for a 60% larger vapor chamber for better cooling.
01:30But aside from that, like, same battery size, same general form factor, same underscreen
01:36camera on the inside, just a lot of the same stuff.
01:38I think more of the focus for this phone, and for the others, of course, is this new
01:42AI, this Galaxy AI thing that they're pushing to the forefront.
01:46And so kind of similarly to what Apple just did a couple months ago, is they're trying
01:50to surface all of the AI things that they've been doing and some new stuff to the top,
01:54so you can see it all in one place so regular people actually use it.
01:58And they also kind of brand it Galaxy AI, sure.
02:01So now in the settings app, right at the top, there's this new Galaxy AI section full of
02:06all of the newest features, some of them genuinely useful, I'll say, others, maybe not so much.
02:12Like call assist, okay, clearly that can be useful, like there's things like the interpreter,
02:16you can speak back and forth to people in different languages, that's cool.
02:20Note assist is going to help people summarize things inside the notes app, transcript assist
02:25will summarize voice notes, all these things are pretty standard, we've seen them before.
02:30If you use Samsung's browser instead of Chrome, for some reason, you can hit that stars AI
02:35button and get all the summarization you'd want of any web page that has a bunch of text
02:38on it.
02:39We've seen that before.
02:40Generative fill of some extra information from a photo you've taken is also not new,
02:44but now it's new to Samsung's gallery app, so if you want to make a photo a wider angle
02:49than it actually was when you took it, or maybe just straighten a horizon or something
02:52and you need to fill in some corners, it seems to do a surprisingly good job at that.
02:57But then there's also drawing assist, which can take something you draw or sketch in notes,
03:03even if you're an absolute piss poor artist like myself, and it generates art in any number
03:09of different styles from it in Samsung notes.
03:12This looks almost exactly like what Apple's like image playgrounds app is doing.
03:17The watercolor style, a little more tame, but then there's also this 3D cartoon style,
03:22and if you give it some time, honestly, pretty impressive.
03:26I don't know if this is good art, but it's just a lot.
03:30That's a lot to do with my finger painting.
03:32So anyway, the Z Flip 6 is, again, along a lot of the same lines as the Z Fold 6.
03:37So again, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, squared up sides, slightly refreshed design, and spec-wise,
03:42they've kind of matched a lot of things with the base S24.
03:45So it actually has the camera from the base S24, the 50 megapixel main camera, and the 12 megapixel ultrawide.
03:51The battery gets bigger.
03:53It goes from 3,700 up to 4,000 milliamp hours, which is promising.
03:57And that inside screen does also get to 2,600 nits now as well.
04:01And there's a wider variety of widgets for the outside screen.
04:03So ideally, it just gets a little bit more useful than before, and it also gets a vapor
04:07chamber for the first time in a Flip, and a new base of 12 gigs of RAM.
04:12And there's these new colored metal rings around the cameras, so you can kind of visually
04:15tell, oh, this is the new one.
04:17Like, I'm convinced that's the only reason they did these rings.
04:19But yeah, we'll have to see if these phones and their folding screens age better than
04:23their previous generation.
04:24Obviously, a slightly better hinge can help, but as far as I can tell, they just look
04:28like the same level of crease, the same feel of a hinge.
04:31Just overall, very similar hardware package to the last year.
04:34The cherry on top, though, is these phones are both 100 bucks more than last year.
04:38So the Z Flip 6 is going to be 10.99 instead of $1,000, and then the Fold is going to be
04:4318.99 instead of 17.99.
04:46So that's the direction they're trending.
04:49But then there's also the wearable stuff that they announced, and I think people will be
04:52just as interested in, maybe even more interested in the wearables than the phone refresh stuff.
04:57So there's two new watches, two new earbuds, and the ring.
05:02So the Galaxy Watch 7 gets a nice little refresh, nothing too dramatic.
05:06It still looks super familiar and it stays starting at $2.99 for the 40mm.
05:10But then they've dropped in a big one.
05:12There is a Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra in the lineup now.
05:16We saw the rumors I talked about on the Waveform podcast.
05:18This is something that we've been kind of expecting for a bit, and what they've finally
05:21come up with is titanium body, sapphire crystal display, same size 1.5 inch circular display
05:28as the 44mm, but a much beefier body around it to fit in a 590mAh battery.
05:35Super resistant to 100m.
05:38They gave it a new watch face, dual frequency GPS, which is also coming to the Watch 7.
05:43And as you can see, they gave it this big orange button called the Quick Button, which
05:53is a custom mappable, yes, activity button that can start any number of different activities
05:58or workouts or whatever you want it to do.
05:59I mean, look, it's clear that this is targeted at the Apple Watch Ultra.
06:03I don't think they're trying to hide that at all.
06:04It's literally the same name, but this one is also $650 instead of Apple's $800.
06:10So my question is basically just how do they stack up head to head?
06:13Battery wise, it may actually be better.
06:15They're saying it can do 100 hours in power saving mode, but also, you know, feature wise,
06:20accuracy wise, we'll see.
06:21Samsung is also doing this new thing where they basically compile all of your health
06:25metrics from everything they measure into one score, an energy score with AI.
06:30And I want to give that a shot as well, but yeah, this is basically just an obvious entry
06:33to give you an option at that higher price point like Apple's done with their Ultra Watch.
06:38So now it's going to be out there.
06:40Now, they also announced the new Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro, and they have obvious equivalents
06:47and other ecosystems as well.
06:48But there's some new cases and new designs here.
06:50Everyone's saying actually aesthetically, they look like the first generation AirPods,
06:55which they're not wrong, especially at the top.
06:57But then these long stems on the Buds Pro actually have these blade lights to indicate
07:02different modes or statuses, which is pretty interesting.
07:05And then, of course, they beef up the pros over the regular Buds with things like ambient
07:09mode and soft tips and this new adaptive noise cancellation that goes up or down based
07:15on the surroundings like sirens.
07:17So the Buds 3 are $179 and the Buds Pro are $249.
07:22But last but not least, they finally gave us details on the ring, that thing that they
07:26teased, I don't know how many months ago it was when we first saw it.
07:31The idea is pretty simple.
07:32It's a ring.
07:33It's a 24-7 fitness tracker, something that you can wear not just while you're awake,
07:37but when you sleep and when you shower and going swimming and all that stuff.
07:41Something you just always have on you.
07:42Now, I've actually never tested a smart ring before, believe it or not.
07:46I play a lot of sports with my hands.
07:48I've never worn a ring for a long time.
07:50But from what I understand, the Aura Ring is basically the standard that everyone is
07:55kind of familiar with.
07:56So I'm assuming Samsung is going to at least try to match what the Aura Ring does.
08:00So we finally get to see the Samsung ring and it looks basically exactly like any other
08:04smart ring.
08:05Pretty minimal on the outside.
08:07Actually a slightly concave design to avoid scratching, which I think is pretty clever.
08:11And then it comes in three different finishes on a titanium frame.
08:14There's matte black or silver or gold.
08:17I'll give you one guess at what my favorite is.
08:20It's 7mm wide and 2.6mm thick.
08:23The sensors are all on the inside as expected.
08:25So heart rate, skin temperature, accelerometer, etc.
08:29And it's also water resistant to 100m as well.
08:32So this thing is claiming a roughly 7 day battery life, depending on your size.
08:36And once it's dead, you can pop it on this clever little charging case that when you
08:41do, it kind of lights up a ring around the ring to show you your charging status, which
08:45is kind of cool.
08:46And it should give you about 1.5 more times the total life of the ring until you charge
08:50it all up again.
08:51And then the price will be $399, which is $100 more than the base Aura Ring price.
08:58But the difference here is no subscription cost.
09:02So the Aura Ring does have a subscription.
09:04It's like $6 a month and that eventually adds up.
09:08But this would just be $399 for the watch.
09:09It gets all the features, all the Samsung Health stuff.
09:12But you also must use a Samsung Galaxy phone and the Samsung Health app.
09:17So yeah, I'm happy to see some competition that isn't a subscription.
09:21And that's kind of it.
09:22That is what Samsung announced today.
09:24It's two new phones.
09:25It's two new earbuds.
09:27It's two new watches and the ring.
09:31And that's all hitting shelves relatively soon.
09:33All pretty premiumly priced as well.
09:35Wow, that was an alliteration.
09:36That was a total accident.
09:37But yeah, all the stuff's coming out soon.
09:40Now before you go, what if I told you this phone is worth a million dollars?
09:46And it's not actually, but let me explain what channel sponsor dbrand has going on here.
09:50So this is their latest drop called Case Hardened.
09:52So if you've ever played Counter-Strike, apparently you'll already know about the in-game economy
09:57for Case Hardened skins.
09:58In fact, just last month, this AK47 apparently sold for over a million dollars, like actual
10:04dollars.
10:05Apparently this blue gem skin is about a 1 in 21 million, like ultra rare.
10:10Now real Counter-Strike fans are probably already typing comments about how dbrand's
10:14Case Hardened isn't random and there aren't any actual blue gems.
10:19But here's the thing.
10:20Just like in the game, dbrand made thousands of Case Hardened patterns.
10:25And yes, some of them are random blue gems.
10:27It won't be quite 1 in 21 million, but they look awesome.
10:32Both designs have a sort of a metallic sheen.
10:34The way the light plays off them kind of makes it fun to stare at the back of your phone
10:37instead of the front.
10:39Maybe that's healthy?
10:40But I'll leave a link down below in the description in case you want to check it out and spice
10:42up your device.
10:43Because yeah, Samsung does not exactly go hard with the colors usually.
10:46Yeah, either way, that's been it.
10:48Let me know what you think of these new devices and these new wearables and which ones you
10:51want to see reviews of first.
10:53Thanks for watching.
10:54Catch you guys in the next one.
10:56Peace.
