00:00Can we talk about the new Galaxy Flip 6? Because this isn't it. Although from the outside
00:05you would struggle to tell because the Flip 5 and the Flip 6 are
00:09identical in terms of dimensions. The only ways you can tell are by these little color coordinated borders around the cameras.
00:15It's also now matte rather than glossy for both the back of the phone and the aluminium frame and of course we have some new
00:21colors. It comes in blue, yellow, silver shadow and a mint. Plus there will also be some Samsung online exclusive options.
00:29But even though on the outside this may not look or feel significantly different this year,
00:33I am actually more excited about the Flip 6 than I am the Fold 6.
00:36Mainly because they're actually a somewhat reasonable price and in fact the Flip 6 starts at the same price as last year's Flip 5
00:43£1,049 and I guess you 256 gigs of storage and also now 12 gigs of RAM.
00:48They've bumped it from 8 to 12 so no price increase for the Flip 6 unlike the Fold 6 which actually has gone up 50 quid
00:54now starting at
00:56£1,799
00:57£1,700 quid basically which is an awful lot of money and even though the Flip and the Fold do share quite a few of the
01:02same upgrades and we'll go into them all in a second, for my money
01:05it's the Flip that I'm more excited about.
01:07But if you do want to check out my full Fold 6 first impressions then click the link at the top right.
01:12Now Samsung actually told me that from their research of people who buy these flip phones
01:16they didn't necessarily want a thinner or lighter phone that wasn't the top priority
01:20but they wanted better cameras, bigger batteries and also better gaming performance.
01:24And so that's exactly what they've done. The biggest upgrade in my book is the fact that they've gone from a
01:293,700 million power battery in the Flip 5 up to 4,000 million powers. That paired with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip
01:36which is significantly more powerful, but it's also more efficient.
01:39And while Samsung didn't give me any hard numbers in terms of the battery difference
01:43I would expect the Flip 6 to last quite a bit longer than the 5.
01:46But of course, that's something I'll test in my full review.
01:49However, like the Fold 6, still the exact same 25 watt charging, which is a bit frustrating. Year after year after year
01:55no change to charging. The second biggest upgrade is that new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chip
02:01which is the same one you'd get in the S24 Ultra and it is quite a significant upgrade.
02:0641% faster MPU for all the AI stuff,
02:1025% graphics, 14% faster processor, although still no Wi-Fi 7.
02:14And as I say, they've bumped the RAM from 8 to 12 gigabytes and that's for both the 256 and the 512 gig models.
02:21What's interesting though is while on the one hand we could complain that it's not any thinner or lighter, on the other hand
02:26it's not any thicker or heavier. And that's despite the bigger battery and also for the first time on a Flip, a
02:32vapor chamber cooler inside. So we should get reduced throttling with that new more powerful 8 Gen 3 chip
02:38which should mean better sustained performance in games, less throttling over time for your longest sessions and
02:43generally just a cooler, better performing phone.
02:46Upgrade number three and actually they've made it a fair bit more durable because the current Flip 5 has an IPX4 rating, the Flip 6
02:55IP48. So it's more water resistant and also for the first time dust resistant
02:59so you can take it to the beach. And like the new Fold 6, we also get tougher glass.
03:03They've gone from an UTG or ultra thin glass to FTG or foldable thin glass
03:09which they say is a bit tougher and also reduces the visibility of the crease. Although
03:14holding the two side-by-side like the Fold 6, which I did in my other video,
03:18I couldn't notice that much difference to the crease if I'm honest.
03:22I'd hoped there would be a bit more of an improvement there to make it more subtle, but in my short time with it
03:26I didn't notice a vast difference. We also get a new hinge, what they call a dual rail hinge
03:31for both the Fold 6 and the Flip 6. And because of this new matte finish to the aluminium, both the frame and the hinge
03:37are 10% more scratch resistant.
03:40Upgrade number four and unlike the Fold 6, which basically has an identical camera to last year,
03:45it's actually a little bit disappointing, only the ultra-wide has a new sensor, the Flip 6 has a new 50 megapixel
03:51main camera up from 12 megapixels last year. Same 12 megapixel ultra-wide next to it
03:57and it also now uses Samsung's Pro Visual Engine, which the S24 Ultra uses, which basically offers much better low-light photography.
04:04We get better AI portrait shots, reduced noise in video and much better HDR.
04:08And because we have this new higher 50 megapixel resolution,
04:12it can give us essentially a 2x lossless zoom. The Flip 6 also has a 10x hybrid zoom. One thing
04:18I wasn't able to try out, but there's this new auto zoom feature,
04:21which will basically go between the ultra-wide and 0.6x focal length up to, I think it's 3x,
04:27depending on where you are and the scene, it'll automatically adjust that zoom range to give you a better composition for your shot.
04:33So definitely a bigger camera upgrade for the Flip 6 compared to the Fold 6,
04:37both in terms of hardware and also the software, the processing. You've got the 8th Gen 3 with its new ISP,
04:43you've got the Pro Visual Engine and also now the ability to shoot in 4k 60 with the ultra-wide lens.
04:48Currently on the Flip 5 you're limited to 30fps with the ultra-wide.
04:52Samsung's also worked with Instagram to bring some of these camera improvements like the processing and the better HDR from the native camera app
04:58into the Instagram camera app. So you'll get better quality shots if you're shooting straight from Instagram.
05:04Upgrade number 5, the software. This Flip 6, I don't know why I'm putting this as the Flip 5,
05:09the Flip 6 will ship running Android 14 and also Samsung's One UI 6.1.1.
05:14Samsung are also promising 7 years of full OS updates and it comes with some nice UI improvements,
05:20including making it easy to use in camcorder mode. You can also now have more widgets on the cover screen at once.
05:25But if you do pick up a Flip 6, I would still recommend downloading the Good Lock app from the Galaxy App Store.
05:31It is a proper official Samsung app and it lets you use basically any one of your downloaded apps on the cover screen.
05:37Your experience may vary in how well it works on this smaller screen,
05:41but at least you can access pretty much everything. And of course, we have all their Galaxy AI features.
05:46Now to be fair, the majority of these features are already available for the Flip 5.
05:50There are really only a handful of new features with the new 6.1.1 software
05:54and I have no doubt they will be going to the older phones as well at a later date.
05:57But there are some really cool features, which I demonstrated on the Fold 6 here. We've got all the assists.
06:02We've got note assist, chat assist, browser assist.
06:05You've got some really cool Gen AI image creation tools like Sketch to Image, Live Studio Portraits.
06:10I will be testing all these features properly on the Flip 6 when I get my review samples,
06:15so make sure you do stay tuned for my full review. Oh shoot, I actually missed one.
06:18Upgrade number 6. They have made the Flip 6's screen brighter.
06:23Up to 2600 nits peak HDR brightness, up from I believe like 1750 last year.
06:29And actually it matches the Fold 6 brightness as well.
06:32Not quite the same for the cover screen here. Still a 60Hz AMOLED.
06:35No change at all really for that one, but certainly a brighter main screen.
06:40But that is essentially it for the Flip 6. We have the mattified back and frame.
06:45We have the improved durability with the IP48, the FTG glass.
06:49We also have the bigger battery. We have the vapor chamber cooler.
06:52We have the new chip, the bump-in RAM, the new 50MP camera, the new colors of course, the brighter screen.
06:58And also I didn't mention this earlier, but they've actually tweaked the speakers and the microphone on the Flip 6
07:03to be a little bit louder and higher quality, as well as the latest software.
07:07What hasn't changed is the charging. Still 25W. The overall size and weight and form factor.
07:12And as I said at the beginning, also the price. £1,049 for the 256GB model.
07:17A little bit more for the 512GB of course.
07:19And there are some very nice cases you can get to go along with this.
07:23And to be fair, it does make the Flip stand out. It can look pretty cool.
07:26But what do you reckon? Have they done enough to tempt you to upgrade?
07:28Let me know what you make of it in the comments below.
07:30If you enjoyed this video, a cheeky like and subscribe would be fantastic.
07:33And I'll see you next time, hopefully in my full review of this, here on The Tech Chat.
