00:00Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here and this is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.
00:15You're probably thinking, wait Marques, I just saw this, your last video was about the
00:18Galaxy Note 10.
00:19No, that was about the Galaxy Note 10 Plus, the bigger flagship phone with a lot of the
00:25bells and whistles that sort of fits perfectly in the Note brand.
00:30This is the Galaxy Note 10.
00:33It's a bit smaller, it's missing a bunch of what the Note 10 Plus has, and it's still
00:38$950, and I still kind of like it.
00:45Let's talk about it.
00:46So if I'm being perfectly real, Samsung could've, maybe should've called this the Note 10e.
00:51This phone is a sort of a trimmed down version in a lot of ways, kind of the same way the
00:56S10e was a trimmed down version of the S10, but for a bit less money.
01:01So I think the best way to review this phone is basically to show exactly what's different
01:05about this Note 10 versus the Note 10 Plus that I just dropped a 15 minute video on,
01:10so I'll link that full review right below the like button if you haven't seen that one
01:13yet.
01:14This is the Note 10.
01:15So first of all, it's $150 cheaper, like I said, which posted at $949 to start, and
01:20that's kind of a little brother.
01:21And I say that because the most obvious difference is it's physically smaller.
01:25Now usually I'd always go for the biggest possible version of any phone, but so many
01:30phones have all gotten so huge these days that it's actually kind of refreshing having
01:34a smaller flagship phone.
01:36So the Note 10 is smaller than the iPhone XS Max, smaller than the OnePlus 7 Pro I'd
01:41been using before.
01:43I can reach all four corners fairly easily.
01:46It's actually really nice not having to stretch to reach the top on these giant phones just
01:50to get to notifications.
01:52I don't have any one-handed assist features turned on anymore on this phone.
01:56It's kind of nice.
01:57It's been a while since I've used a phone that's actually this small, which is plenty
02:01to say about a Galaxy Note.
02:03It's a 6.3 inch display, bezels still tiny, still the boxy overall shape.
02:09And another spec difference that a lot of people focus on is it's now a 1080p display
02:14instead of the 1440p that the big brother had.
02:17Now this spec is a perfect example of something that matters to many people a lot more on
02:22paper than in real life.
02:23Like if you haven't seen the Galaxy Note 10, if you haven't actually used this phone,
02:27you might see on the spec sheet that it's such an expensive phone, but it only has a
02:311080p display and that sticks out like a sore thumb.
02:34But in reality, this display is pretty much great.
02:38With that resolution, you'd be concerned about sharpness, but it's still pretty sharp at
02:41over 400 ppi.
02:43So you never really see any pixels.
02:45It still gets extremely bright or extremely dim.
02:48Colors still look pretty good.
02:49It's just mainly smaller.
02:51The hole punch cutout, even though it's the same size, appears just a tiny bit bigger
02:55since the phone is smaller.
02:57But overall, it's still not a huge distraction at all.
03:00I think if it was a notch, like the iPhone, I'd find it a bit more intrusive on this smaller
03:04screen.
03:05But even, you know, full screen videos or gaming and things like that are still fine
03:09here.
03:10I still do miss not having 90 hertz or any sort of high refresh rate.
03:14But aside from that, this screen has been pretty excellent.
03:17I just think still, because it's $950, you just sort of want it to have everything you
03:24want it to have, a 1440p display at this price.
03:27That's one of the only ways it really feels disappointing.
03:30Everything else, aesthetically, is pretty much identical to the big brother, just shrunken
03:34down, which makes things more reachable, more pocketable, and more holdable.
03:39So the cameras are exactly the same.
03:41The speakers are exactly the same.
03:43The fingerprint reader is the same.
03:45And the buttons are the same, but they're even more reachable, so they're a little
03:47bit lower.
03:48I didn't have a problem reaching them on the Note 10+, but if you did, these are a little
03:52closer.
03:53The software is also all still the same.
03:55But for some reason, and they did this on the Galaxy S10e also, on the smaller phone,
03:59they don't give you the option to change your screen resolution.
04:03On a phone with a 1440p display, they let you pick if you want to jump down to 1080
04:07or back up.
04:08On a phone with a 1080p display, they hide it.
04:11Maybe it's because they think it's fine to just leave it at 1080 max res all the time.
04:16I don't know, but I would have at least liked to have seen the option here, since this is
04:19the Galaxy Note.
04:21The S Pen is exactly the same, too.
04:23I was actually kind of wondering if the smaller phone would get a smaller stylus, but nope.
04:28Exact same stylus on the bigger phone with all the same features and gestures.
04:31And then performance is, for all intents and purposes, the same, but with some small spec
04:37differences.
04:38The Note 10 spec will always be 8 gigs of RAM and 256 gigs of that high-speed storage.
04:45None of that is expandable here.
04:47The Note 10 Plus, like we talked about before, can bump up to 12 gigs of RAM and 512 gigs
04:53of internal storage, and it has the expandable storage via microSD.
04:57And I think that for 90-something percent of users, that 8 gigs of RAM is plenty and
05:02the 256 gigs of storage is enough.
05:04But if you need more, you should consider the Note Plus.
05:06A couple of the small things, one, Note 10 has a bit of a smaller battery, 3500 milliamp-hours
05:13is the official number.
05:15Kind of small for a flagship, actually, in 2019, but after using it for a while, it
05:19became apparent that it doesn't matter as much because it has a 1080p display.
05:23If you bump up the resolution on the 10 Plus, you will start to get worse battery life.
05:27I kind of left it in the middle, got my four and a half hours of screen-on time.
05:31This phone, with a smaller battery but a 1080p display, got me those same great numbers
05:36for battery, about a four-hour screen-on time, which is pretty good battery life.
05:39And then Note 10 also lacks the support for the super-fast 45-watt ultra-fast charger.
05:46I don't know if that's a space thing or just a cost-savings thing, but it will still come
05:51in the box with a 25-watt charger, which is pretty good if you get the expensive extra
05:55one.
05:56It'll only work with the 10 Plus.
05:57And then Note 10, while I said it does have the same cameras, it doesn't have the extra
06:01depth sensors on the back, as you can see, that the 10 Plus has.
06:05So yeah, no AR doodle or anything crazy with depth sensing like that, although it still
06:09does portrait mode and live focus video just fine.
06:12So overall, you know, there's a good amount of stuff missing, but it's also still very
06:16much a premium phone with a premium build and the high-end specs.
06:20And it turns out the things that were sort of the most concerning to me, which were the
06:24display and the battery life, sort of worked hand-in-hand with each other to be fine.
06:29So it's still a great phone in a vacuum, but we're not in a vacuum.
06:34This is a world where other phones or other options exist.
06:39This is a world where the Galaxy S10 Plus also exists.
06:43Now why do I bring this up?
06:44Here's the thing.
06:45Here's the thing.
06:46Samsung is a smart company, you know, plenty of smart people working over there, but back
06:51in just March, it seems like they've made a phone that's better in a lot of ways than
06:57the Note and for less money.
07:00Galaxy S10 Plus came out just a few months ago, and if you look at how similar they are,
07:04they have the same specs.
07:06Some on the S10 Plus are actually better, so they both have the Snapdragon 855, but
07:10you can go up to 12 gigs of RAM.
07:12It has a bigger, higher resolution display at 6.4 inches and 1440p.
07:19Same ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.
07:21Better speakers in my opinion.
07:23And it has basically the same triple cameras on the back, but sideways instead of vertical.
07:27And you get a second sensor on the front for your depth sensing that the Note doesn't have.
07:31And it's much more rounded and tapered of course, but you also get that extra button.
07:36So Bixby fans, it is remappable.
07:38And you basically trade the S Pen for a headphone jack and a much bigger 4,100mAh battery.
07:46That is, that's a lot of reasons to get the S10 Plus over the Note.
07:51And it's cheaper.
07:52It starts at 800 bucks right now on B&H, and you can find it for way less than that.
07:58And then the Note is 950, so why does this smaller Note 10 exist?
08:04Well, it turns out, there is a select group of people that have always really liked the
08:09Galaxy Note experience or wanted to have a Galaxy Note, you know, S Pen and all.
08:14But just wanted it to be smaller.
08:16And the Note's always been a huge phone.
08:18It's been basically the phone Samsung makes that's their biggest for the past couple years.
08:23This one is smaller.
08:24It's more grippable, more reachable.
08:26And that's part of why I love it so much.
08:28So for those who liked the Note but wanted it to be smaller, this phone is for those people.
08:33So that puts you in like a really specific Venn diagram overlap of people who like don't
08:38care too much about the specs or the couple missing features.
08:42They just really want the S Pen and a smaller phone, and they have $950 to spend on a phone.
08:51This I guess, that's, this is that phone.
08:53Personally, I really like this phone a lot more than I actually thought I would.
08:56It's kind of refreshing actually having a flagship phone be smaller, even though it's
09:00still a 6.3 inch display.
09:02But all that being said, I would still go for OnePlus 7 Pro over this Note and over
09:10the S10+.
09:11It costs less than both of these phones, and it's got that higher refresh rate display
09:15that I've been so raving over lately that I really hope a lot of phones in the future
09:19pick up on.
09:20You're going to miss out on things like the better cameras here and wireless charging,
09:23but that's where I'd go.
09:25But hey, at least now we can answer the question in the title, who this phone is for.
09:30It's that small group of people.
09:32Could be you.
09:33Either way, thanks for watching.
09:37Catch you guys in the next one.
09:38Peace!
