00:00Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here, and this is Samsung's new flagship, the Galaxy S20.
00:10I actually kind of like that they're catching up the name to the year, so 2020, Galaxy
00:16S20.
00:17Now, I don't know that they'd say this ever publicly, but if you went to Samsung
00:20and just asked, hey, what's the most important phone that you guys make every year?
00:24What's the most influential phone in your lineup?
00:28It would be this.
00:29It would be the new Galaxy S flagship.
00:30This is the phone that the average person sees as the Android-iPhone competitor, as
00:35the big nemesis.
00:36And when you have such a big reputation to protect, you tend to not take as many risks.
00:41You want to make the right safe moves in the right places, and then take the risks with
00:46other phones.
00:47So I have my buddy Judner here, whose YouTube channel is Your Average Consumer, to help
00:51me out with this one.
00:52So you should definitely check out his channel, link below.
00:54So without any further ado, let's get into Galaxy S20.
00:57So Samsung made some moves with this phone, and they're all around pretty great.
01:01It's a new high refresh rate display, a bigger battery, a new camera system, and 5G.
01:08Pretty simple, safe, but all good moves.
01:11So I'll start with the display, because it's the best upgrade.
01:13So you might remember I was harping all of last year on how much I love high refresh
01:17rate displays, and there were naysayers, but now we're all slowly, I guess, realizing
01:23how good it is.
01:24So now Samsung's on board with the Galaxy S20, and we've got a super fluid 120Hz display.
01:30It's also 0.1 inches bigger, and flattened out a bit on the edges.
01:34So this is the biggest, best change for the Galaxy S20.
01:38I'm a gamer, so when I'm gaming, and if the game supports 120Hz, it's a whole nother
01:46level, guys.
01:47It feels so different from regular games, that you just fall in love immediately.
01:52There's certain types of games also that look better at 120Hz.
01:56Like I was just playing a golf game, and the ball flies through the air, and it's smooth
02:00and everything, but a racing game, where you're really trying to react quickly, and stuff
02:06is coming at you real quick, flying across the screen, there's less tearing, that's
02:09where 120Hz looks amazing.
02:11Yeah, like I said, it's a must.
02:14It's a must.
02:15So, needless to say, I'm a huge fan of the high refresh rate.
02:17I've been saying it.
02:19But also, something you notice in pretty much every phone that's moving up to the
02:22high refresh rate, is a bigger battery to keep up with it.
02:26And so Galaxy S20 also does that, moving from 3400mAh to a 4000mAh battery.
02:32On paper, that's pretty good, that's a substantial gain, it's almost 20% bigger.
02:37And you also still have the wireless charging, and you have up to 25W fast charging.
02:41But at the end of the day, you just want battery life to hold up.
02:44Alright, so battery life.
02:45How's your battery been?
02:46I don't want to spoil your video, and I'm sure you'll go into detail on it, but generally
02:49on S20, what's that been like?
02:53I can pretty confidently hit 5 hours, maybe even slightly under that, but we're talking
02:59about 4000mAh and 120Hz always on.
03:04So I'm not going to say I'm pretty happy with it.
03:08And for you, that's a whole day, getting to the end of the day, no problem?
03:11Oh yeah.
03:12It's been about the same, like a 5 hour screen on time day is pretty good.
03:17There are some days where I might need more, and so I can kill this phone in a day.
03:21I don't think I could say that about the 5000, 6000mAh phones.
03:26But yeah, I'm comfortable with the battery at 120Hz.
03:29Yeah, I mean, you'll see a difference between this and the Ultra, for sure.
03:34I think so.
03:35But I think given the fact that you are using it at 120Hz, it's worth the trade-off.
03:40120Hz is that good.
03:42To me, it feels like an even trade between high refresh rate and battery life, meaning
03:46this phone got up to 4000mAh and it didn't really gain a ton or lose a ton of battery
03:50life.
03:51The Ultra still has better battery life with that even bigger battery, but overall, I'd
03:55give this phone a solid B+.
03:57And then of course, if you really want to save battery, ProTip, you can, it's like,
04:02it comes out of the box at 60Hz, but ProTip, you can switch it back down to 60Hz and you
04:06will gain, tests say, around 30% battery life by switching down.
04:11So if you're about to have a super long day and you know you won't have access to
04:14a charger, you can switch down to 60Hz, fine, longer battery life.
04:19But the rest of the internal specs, as a reminder, are bumped up to 2020 flagship numbers, which
04:25are just crazy big numbers across the board.
04:27So Snapdragon 865, 12GB of RAM across every one, 128GB of UFS 3.0 storage to start, and
04:35all great performers.
04:37And as I expected, this phone performs great.
04:40Actually, it performs every bit as great as the S20 Ultra.
04:43That's something we don't talk about as much, is the ceiling for performance in these high-end
04:47phones is pretty consistent.
04:50And in a brand new phone, you know, going from 12 to 16GB of RAM doesn't make that
04:55much of a difference right now.
04:56So the S20 doesn't stutter or lag or have any problem multitasking or holding apps
05:02on the RAM any worse than the Ultra, in case you were wondering.
05:05All right, I got an average consumer question for you.
05:07Okay.
05:08Because I'm apparently out of touch.
05:10Okay.
05:11Does the average consumer miss this headphone?
05:15This is the first headphone jack being gone from a Samsung flagship.
05:18It was gone from the Note 10, but like, this is the default Android phone.
05:22The headphone jack is gone.
05:24Is that, is this a big moment for that?
05:27It's a big moment, I'd say, because I think it shows the willingness people are to accept
05:33that it's gone.
05:34Yeah.
05:35Samsung's been one of the last companies to really hold on to it.
05:37Yeah, I agree.
05:38No headphone jack.
05:39Not a big deal for me.
05:40It's been like three years now of me not using a phone with a headphone jack.
05:44I have my wireless headphones, but yeah.
05:47I've complained about it for a long time.
05:49Yeah.
05:50And then after a while, I noticed a lot of people in my comment section would just be
05:53like, dude, get over it.
05:54It's like, oh, am I, I'm trying to defend you guys, but if you're cool with it, then
05:58okay.
05:59So I stopped kind of knocking companies for taking it away.
06:02Yeah.
06:03You still got to have the headphone jack.
06:04There's a couple options left, but this is no longer one of them.
06:06So the new camera system, the last big change in these phones, it's kind of funny.
06:11It's a 12 megapixel main camera with OIS, a 12 megapixel ultra wide camera, and a 64
06:18megapixel 3X telephoto camera.
06:20So of course the specs are a bit worse on paper, but the camera experience of the S20
06:24in a couple of ways is actually better than the S20 Ultra.
06:28That's mainly because the S20 Ultra had a couple issues that the S20 doesn't have.
06:33Plus the couple of things that the S20 Ultra does specifically better than most like zoom
06:39aren't necessarily enjoyable or applicable to everyone.
06:42So a typical photo from the Galaxy S20 camera is sharp.
06:45First of all, some may find the look over sharpened actually at times, but you can't
06:48ever really complain that it's soft and Samsung has continued to tone down and dial back what
06:53used to be this crazy saturated and vivid color complex to now a more neutral look
06:59that I like.
07:00And I still think it works.
07:01The S20 actually still likes bright exposures though, and it will err on the side of overexposure
07:05sometimes, but generally it takes nice photos.
07:08Plus I've had none of the S20 Ultra's autofocus issues, thanks to dual pixel autofocus being
07:14back here.
07:15And the sensor being smaller also technically means the fringing at the edges that I talked
07:20about with the S20 Ultra is less of a problem.
07:23I'm actually seeing less involuntary bokeh and less close focus smearing.
07:28And then zoom will get you to a maximum of 30x instead of 100x.
07:32But I still find that's plenty.
07:34That's enough for me.
07:35Like I mentioned before, I usually just zoom with my feet, but in the few instances where
07:39I can't, you will get crisper far away shots with just this telephoto.
07:44I mean, videos are pretty solid, especially if you're using like the super steady.
07:47That's really good.
07:48It looks so good.
07:49Yeah.
07:50I can shoot B-roll with this and probably get away with it.
07:53I think so.
07:54I think for the average person.
07:56Well, yeah, yeah, that's true.
07:57But for us, maybe, maybe not.
07:59But I think regular people using this for video, they're not going to have any complaints.
08:04Like things are a bit sharp, you know, but for the most part, it looks pretty solid.
08:10So the 4K video on this phone looks good.
08:128K video, while it's available, and that's amazing, it's still kind of compromised again.
08:18It's still 24fps, still has some rolling shutter and has no tracking autofocus.
08:23But really the main thing is it doesn't even come from the main camera this time.
08:27It comes from the higher resolution 64 megapixel telephoto camera, which means it crops in
08:32a lot and is just generally harder to use.
08:35So I'd stick with the 4K video for the most part for safety.
08:38So they hit the big three with the right moves with camera, battery and display.
08:43They're all better, but then they have to be smart about preserving, keeping the familiar
08:48good stuff, which they also did a lot of with S20.
08:51So they kept the ultrasonic fingerprint reader and it's fine.
08:54You know, they kept the speaker at the bottom of the phone.
08:57That's fine.
08:58They still have one UI, of course, and all their 25 million features, still IP68 water
09:04resistant, still expandable storage.
09:06It's actually better button placement, meaning they got rid of the Bixby button.
09:11They still have the hole punch camera up at the front.
09:13It's moved to the middle now, but it's still a small cutout.
09:17And really they just kept the same general design aesthetic and materials from Galaxy
09:21S10.
09:22I mean, it's a glass sandwich.
09:23In the spirit of figuring out the average consumer, I did a little poll on Twitter
09:27to try to figure out how many of you guys use a case on your phone.
09:30And if I was guessing, I would have said something like 60-65%, but it was closer to 80% of you.
09:38So if you're looking for a case for the Galaxy S20, might as well check out the grip case
09:41from channel sponsor dbrand.
09:43I don't have it here, but I think Andrew does over there on the other side of the studio.
09:48You got the one with the teardown skin on it.
09:49Let me get that one over here.
09:53So, yeah, the grip seems to work pretty well.
09:57It's pretty protective.
09:58So, yeah, like I said, a lot of the right moves.
10:01These phones also now have 5G across the board, S20 to S20 Ultra, but the regular S20 only
10:07supports low to mid band 5G, while the S20 Plus and Ultra add millimeter wave.
10:13So, you all know how I feel about 5G.
10:14I already have said you probably shouldn't buy these phones just for 5G, but it's a
10:18great choice.
10:19You all know how I feel about 5G.
10:20I already have said you probably shouldn't buy these phones just for 5G, but it's worth
10:24noting, this will never have millimeter wave 5G.
10:27But now that we've seen what Samsung's improved and we've actually used it, this definitely
10:30still looks and feels like the default Android phone, which if you're going to compete, this
10:36is the thousand dollar phone you got to measure up to.
10:38And if you want to charge more than that, you got to beat it at something.
10:42And I feel like that's exactly what Samsung wanted and they're still happy to have that
10:45spot.
10:46So big thank you and shout out again to Judner for the collab.
10:48You should check out his day in the life video, I'll link it below the like button
10:51where he goes over all the little nuances and things you find using a phone like this
10:55on a daily basis.
10:56But that's the Galaxy S20.
10:58Is it the best phone?
11:00No, it's not even Samsung's best phone in their lineup.
11:03That would be the Ultra, but this is a better buy.
11:06So this is the new default.
11:09Who's going to beat it?
11:11That's been it.
11:12Thanks for watching.
11:13Catch you guys in the next one.
11:14Peace.
