00:00Yo what's up guys, MKBHD here, and so I don't always do unboxings, but when I do, it's
00:09usually of the most interesting stuff.
00:12And so this might be the most interesting phone in the world right now, it's the Galaxy
00:16Z Flip, or Zed Flip.
00:18So this is my sort of second look at the device, I bought this one and I'm about to put my
00:22main SIM card into it, and I'm about to make it my daily phone.
00:26So when you get it out the box for the first time, you're once again greeted with a similar
00:30warning from the original Galaxy Fold, you know, don't press against the screen too hard
00:35with anything sharp, avoid scratching it, it's not water or dust resistant so keep that
00:40in mind, and no screen protectors or adhesives on this screen.
00:45And then in the box you also get some USB-C AKG earbuds, and a Samsung fast charger which
00:51is definitely nice to see.
00:53But let's take a closer look at the phone itself.
01:07So there it is, the Z Flip as everyone else who spent their $1380 will get it.
01:13Yes I got the purple one, call me crazy but I think this looks better actually than the
01:17mirror black version, simply because of the fingerprint situation.
01:22This may be, maybe the most fingerprint magnet phone I've seen in a long time just because
01:28of how much you have to touch it to handle it.
01:31Like look here, check out this demo, this is a freshly wiped down phone right, I use
01:35microfibers to clean off phones all the time before videos, all I'm going to do is open
01:39it and swipe around to do a couple of things, nothing too crazy, a normal couple seconds
01:43of use, then I close it and oh my god there's already a ton of fingerprints all over the
01:50back.
01:51It's wild, it's not even worth trying to keep it clean, this feels like one of those
01:53phones that you'd be better off putting a skin or a case on.
01:57And of course the case situation to a folding phone like this is of course pretty interesting,
02:02so I'll leave a link to a good case below.
02:04So a couple of things that I've noticed now that I've had it out the box for a day.
02:08One is for as much magic talk as Samsung has said about this being the first ever foldable
02:13with a folding glass display, well we've seen that play out a bit in a bit of a controversial
02:17way.
02:18We of course probably saw Zach did his legendary durability test which revealed the protective
02:23layer on top seems to scratch just as easily as before and that sparked Samsung to talk
02:28about their screen and screen protector replacement program.
02:31With mine here you can see all the warnings are still here even when you boot up the phone
02:36it's still telling you actively don't even put a screen protector on it, it's fragile,
02:40it's fragile, be careful.
02:42So the advantages of it being a glass screen seem to really be limited to the way it feels
02:47in the hand and under your finger, which is definitely better than previous plastic
02:51folding phones but that's about it there.
02:54And then also there's a bit of a warning about magnets like the original Galaxy Fold
02:58so I figured I'd get the handy magnet paper to see where the magnets are in this phone
03:02and sure enough there are some matching pairs of magnets at the top and the bottom that
03:07keep it held snugly together when it's closed.
03:09So then holding this phone and using it my thoughts are definitely backed up that you
03:15know despite the little indent up by the selfie camera and the still very visually
03:19obvious crease this Z Flip is the most complete and well-built folding phone yet.
03:25I'm definitely sticking by that you know the evolution of what they've learned from the
03:28first Galaxy Fold just a couple months ago is really impressive but there's a couple
03:32key differences that aren't necessarily all that great.
03:36The taller aspect ratio for example is feeling kind of like a mixed bag you know 21 by 9
03:41is pretty cool as far as keeping it slim and manageable for such a big screen but
03:46it's now definitely too tall to reach anything at the top corner with one hand even for me.
03:52So it's gonna be more of a two-handed device most of the time and you're also gonna have
03:56some pretty sizable black bars when watching anything but 21 by 9 content and I'm not a
04:01huge fan of like zooming in to fill the screen because you chop off a lot of the video when
04:06you do that.
04:08So yeah something to keep in mind.
04:09And speaking of hands I actually think this phone is easier to open and close with one
04:15hand than the Moto Razr was for me and a big part of that is because of the hinge weight
04:20and the tightness and it just feels more under control.
04:23So I like this phone's hinge more than the Razr's but because of how slippery it is and
04:28because of how expensive it is I still tend to want to just do everything with two hands
04:34every time just to avoid maybe the possibility of dropping it.
04:37And so it's just a little bit annoying to have to go through this whole two-handed
04:40process every single time you want to use the phone.
04:44I mention this because the Z Flip almost completely gets rid of the outside cover screen that
04:49the original Fold and even the Moto Razr have.
04:52So you're really not ever using the phone when it's closed.
04:55You have to open it up every single time.
04:58And for the record I do prefer the outside cover screen even like the one on the Razr.
05:02I think being able to see your notifications, interact with them, clean them up a little
05:06bit, stuff like that, that would be great to avoid having to open the phone every time.
05:11But the tiny tiny screen on the Z Flip is basically just going to show you the time
05:15and your notifications and if you're crazy enough it can be a viewfinder for a selfie
05:20from the main camera but that won't even let you switch over to the ultrawide.
05:24It's so limited.
05:25The screen's too small to add a toggle.
05:27So yeah, the combination of no functional outside screen plus two-handed opening and
05:32closing every single time is the one thing that I think may weigh on me a bit as I'm
05:38using the phone every day.
05:39But hey, you know, if people of olden days did this with flip phones every single day
05:44then maybe it's not so bad.
05:46I will say having a phone that folds down to being so much smaller and fitting in my
05:50pocket better, the idea in general is growing on me even though it's very clearly still
05:56an obvious crease and even though the technology is a couple compromises short of being ideal
06:01for most people right now, I feel like the idea of a vertical folding phone is at least
06:06making more sense to me as I get used to having like a lot less feeling phone in my pocket
06:12if that makes sense.
06:13Like I've had huge phones in my pockets for a long time and this really actually does
06:17feel like a lot less than that when it's folded.
06:20So I get that.
06:21So let the testing begin.
06:22I'm going to use this phone just like I use any other phone.
06:26If anything starts to break or scratch or dent or peel or anything like that, you guys
06:32will be the first to know about it.
06:33So thanks for watching this unboxing and second look.
06:36This is one of many videos coming up on a bunch of this new tech that's all coming
06:39out.
06:40So definitely stay tuned and get subscribed if you haven't already to be the first to
06:44see that when it comes out.
06:45Catch you guys in the next one.
06:46Peace.
