00:00Hey what's up, MKBHD here and welcome to a hands-on and first look of a really interesting
00:08new folding phone, the Moto Razr Plus.
00:12So you know how a lot of these foldable phones have kind of felt like a small bump up from
00:16the previous one, they're all kind of similar for both the folding and flipping phones?
00:21Well this one feels like a big jump forward.
00:24For the first time in a while it feels like we're sort of leaping into the second generation
00:28of these flipping phone things, and it's pretty obvious why.
00:31So this Razr Plus, which is the fourth generation of the folding phone from Motorola, is going
00:36to have a gigantic screen on the outside cover.
00:39Now gigantic is of course a relative term, but in a small phone that folds in half and
00:43fits in your pocket, having a 3.6 inch 144Hz P-OLED display that goes basically corner
00:51to corner all the way around the front, and even has pixels around the cameras and the
00:55flash cutouts is pretty dramatically different from what we had before.
00:59Now the rest of the phone is pretty solid too, I can't quite call it a flagship since
01:04it doesn't really have the highest end available specs, but it's pretty close, it feels like
01:08upper premium mid-range, and the retail price is going to be $999 when it launches in a
01:12few weeks this summer.
01:14They've kind of slowly dropped the retro throwback aesthetic from the first generation of this
01:18thing, and they've tightened up the edges and modernized the whole thing, the huge chin
01:22is gone, and inside it's a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a
01:29decent sized 3800mAh battery with 30W charging and 5W wireless charging.
01:35So yeah, not any sort of crazy world-beater flagship specs, but still pretty solid.
01:40I will note that the 3800mAh battery is 1000mAh greater than the previous gen Razr.
01:48This thing only had a 2800mAh battery, so that puts it right in line with the current
01:53Z Flip, the 4, which has a 3700mAh.
01:57And then on the inside, the main folding display is a 6.9 inch, 22x9, 1080p POLED display,
02:04and it's a 165Hz LTPO display.
02:07It's not the brightest thing I've ever seen, but hey, for a folding phone, I think it looks
02:11really good, it's got the hole-punch selfie camera at the top, the bezels are even thinner,
02:16and the crease, it's not revolutionary, it's about as subtle as I've seen in some other
02:21folding phones with its redesigned aluminum hinge mechanism.
02:24It definitely disappears when you're looking at the content and just using the phone, but
02:28none of that is why this feels like a new generation.
02:32It feels like a new generation, of course, because of the giant outside display.
02:36So let's talk about it.
02:37This new outside display is really interesting for two reasons.
02:40One, because it's basically what we're also expecting, based on the rumors and leaks
02:43from what we've seen of Samsung's next flip, the Flip 5, it's probably also coming out
02:48later this summer.
02:50But also two, because it does throw a wrench in how you use a phone like this.
02:55So like I said, this is a 3.6 inch, 144Hz display that basically covers the entire outside
03:01of this phone, right up to you get near the hinge, where I assume the digitizer is.
03:05The two primary cameras, the 12MP primary and the 13MP ultra-wide slash macro, and the
03:11flash are cutouts with even more pixels around them and in between them.
03:16And so you can basically do anything you want on this outside screen.
03:21In its resting state, it's just a clock, of course, but you can change between a bunch
03:24of different clock styles.
03:26They all have black backgrounds, so they look pretty seamless on the OLED.
03:29You also get some basic notifications at the bottom left corner and the ability to manage
03:33those notifications.
03:34When you swipe down from the top, you have a whole bunch of quick controls, things like
03:39brightness and Wi-Fi and a flashlight and whatever media is currently playing.
03:44But then when you wake it up and unlock with a swipe up from the bottom or a fingerprint
03:48unlock, you basically get this entire home screen with a wallpaper and a bunch of pages
03:53of these things, widgets, shortcuts, etc.
03:57Now these are limited preset pages, they're actually called panels, and you can turn them
04:02on or off or rearrange them in the settings.
04:05But they do have a variety of things.
04:07There's a home panel with the clock and the weather and shortcuts to other panels.
04:11But then, of course, a calendar panel and a weather panel and a contacts panel, and
04:16you can put them in whatever order you want.
04:18There's also a Spotify one.
04:19Apparently they've worked with Spotify to create this perfectly optimized one, and I
04:23do think it looks pretty good.
04:25But also, you can just use whatever app you want on the outside screen.
04:29There is a settings page that lets you enable almost any app on your phone to work on the
04:34outside screen and control the continuity settings so when you open and close the phone,
04:39the app stays open, which is super useful.
04:41Honestly, it sounds pretty great since you can take photos and navigate with Google
04:46Maps and pay with Gpay and do all kinds of convenient stuff without even opening the
04:51phone.
04:52That's the whole point of the outside screen.
04:53But it also goes so much further than that.
04:56You can make and receive phone calls with the phone still closed.
05:00You can use a whole scientific calculator on the outside screen.
05:04There's a whole keyboard for typing out messages if you want to send emails or text messages
05:09from the outside.
05:11There's even games.
05:13Of course, these are bordering on gimmicky, but there's literally games that Motorola
05:17built to play on this outside screen, like this one where you feed the marble to the
05:21end of the maze, which is of course the camera cutout.
05:25You can watch YouTube videos on this thing if you want to.
05:27It's going to be a weird square aspect ratio with all of this, but yeah, there's basically
05:31no limit to what you can do on this outside display.
05:34It's a super screen.
05:35It can do whatever you want the screen to do.
05:40But hear me out.
05:41I don't actually know if that's what people want.
05:45Because the more I think about it, just zoom out a little bit with me.
05:49Those hot dog style folding phones, like the big folding phones, those are all productivity
05:53monsters.
05:54You got the screen on the inside and the outside.
05:56Those are for people who want to do as much as possible and fit as big of a screen as
05:59they possibly can in their pockets.
06:01Great.
06:02But then these little flipping phones, they've always been smaller and they've always been
06:07a little bit more regular, I think.
06:10It's also kind of nice to have a barrier between using your phone and not using your phone.
06:16So if there's just something small and there's a notification, you can clear it.
06:19But I won't get sucked into like scrolling through TikTok endlessly or Instagram Reels
06:25because I will have to open the phone for that.
06:28But now on this one, you can get sucked into TikToks on the outside screen.
06:33So is this a good thing?
06:34I mean, for me, yeah, I mean, I love having tons of functionality on the outside.
06:40The more, the better.
06:41And they've even built some extra stuff.
06:43The whole outside screen can be a viewfinder for the camera.
06:46And there's also this half folded mode that you can use to hold the phone where it feels
06:50like an old camcorder from back in the day, but the subject can still see themselves.
06:55So there's a lot of cool stuff.
06:56But yeah, I wonder if the customer of a flipping phone like this actually has that like super
07:02high on their priority list, you know, something to think about.
07:05Actually, Motorola, literally alongside this phone, also announced the new Razr.
07:10So this is the Razr Plus we've been talking about with the huge screen for 1000 bucks.
07:14But the Razr will come out later this summer.
07:17And it's also a folding phone, but with just the tiny one and a half inch postage stamp
07:21size display on the outside, just like from the earliest flipping phones, which, I don't
07:25know, just seems to make a lot of sense.
07:28And the rest of the phone will have just slightly lower end specs.
07:30Like it's a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.
07:33It's a 144 Hertz internal display instead of 165.
07:37It's 128 gigs of storage instead of 256.
07:40It's a vegan leather back instead of a Gorilla Glass Victus.
07:43And it's still IP 52 water resistant.
07:45But they didn't tell us the price of this phone.
07:47So I'm guessing, just based on context, and knowing that it's probably going to be meaningfully
07:52cheaper for this new phone to exist, this might be like a $599 to $799 brand new folding
08:00phone.
08:02And that's also really interesting.
08:03Plus also because it doesn't have the huge outside screen, it has room for a larger battery
08:074200 milliamp hours and a larger primary camera, 64 megapixel camera.
08:12So a little lighter on the wallet, a little bit more space for other things.
08:17Kind of interesting.
08:18Also speaking of wallets, this one's a little bit lighter in your pocket too.
08:21You can get it at shop.mcbhd.com.
08:23But that's it.
08:24Let me know what you think of the giant outside screen on the flipping phone.
08:28Is it truly second gen?
08:29Is this where we're going with them all?
08:31Or is this kind of overkill?
08:32I'll hang out in the comments for this one.
08:35I'm really curious what you guys think.
08:37Either way, thanks for watching.
08:39Catch you later.
08:40Peace.
