00:00Hey, what's up? MKBHD here, and welcome to your first look and hands-on of Samsung's new mid-year drops for 2022,
00:07the Flip 4, the Fold 4, and a really impressive looking new pair of watches.
00:12So, this is everything you need to know about all of it.
00:16So, I'm gonna start with the phones, and the theme for the phones is definitely
00:22refinement. And this was already the theme last year and the year before,
00:25but look, in the relatively young world of foldable phones right now, if we're being honest,
00:30Samsung is kind of dominating the space, like there's only a few foldable phones that real people are actually buying right now,
00:36and the Flip is apparently the most popular folding phone in the world.
00:41So, the Flip 4 looks and feels very much just like a Flip 3.
00:46It's like there's really three things that are notably new about it, and they're all subtle.
00:51So, one is a slight aesthetic trimming, so the bezels are just a little bit slimmer on the inside,
00:57the rails feel a little bit more trim and flat, plus there's a new set of colors.
01:01Then two is it's a bit stronger and more durable, so that's always good to see in a folding phone.
01:06So, the hinge is a little bit more trim and still feels very sturdy to open and close,
01:11and of course stays half open for all the software features that take advantage of that.
01:15And then three is there's updated specs.
01:18And I'm thinking, this is just me just using context clues,
01:21but I'm thinking that the most noticeable improvement year over year with this phone might actually be battery life.
01:28So, this phone has the new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, which has had excellent efficiency in some other phones I've tested so far,
01:34plus the battery also bumps up from 3300 to 3700 milliamp hours.
01:39That's a small thing, but it's a combo that could be great for battery life,
01:42plus it still fast charges up to 50% in 30 minutes, not bad.
01:46Other than that though, the hardware you're looking at is very similar to the last flip,
01:51and really there's one big new software feature,
01:54which is a bunch of new widgets and lock screen stuff on the outside cover screen.
01:58So, you got to love the lock screen customization and the functionality,
02:01potentially even matching your watch face to your phone.
02:04So, if this was early days, maybe the first one to two generations of the phone,
02:08that's when you'd expect to see more tinkering with like the size of the outside screen and what it really should be capable of.
02:14Now that they've settled on this size though, they're really just adding stuff that you can do with it.
02:18So, you can change quick settings, take a selfie, activate the flashlight, accept a phone call, start a new phone call, all types of stuff like that.
02:26This is all good quality of life stuff, makes a lot of sense.
02:29And I think there's flip fans out there,
02:31ahem, Austin Evans,
02:32who like the previous versions who are going to like this one too.
02:35But at the same time, if you weren't convinced on the flip,
02:38whether it's because that crease is still somewhat visible and feelable when you scroll,
02:43or because you don't like the idea of having to open up the phone every time you want to use it,
02:48or whatever else might've bothered you,
02:49none of that has changed either.
02:51So, this new one probably won't change your mind.
02:53And neither will the new price,
02:55because it's the same as the old price, $999.
02:58So, there are other phones that you could get for this price,
03:00other flagships, you know, gaming phones, slab style phones,
03:03but this one for $999 folds in half.
03:06And it's probably the most appealing folding phone to most people.
03:09But on the other end of the spectrum though,
03:10is the big unfolding productivity monster,
03:13the Fold 4.
03:14So, this is actually the one I'm personally most interested in.
03:17And what if I told you that the exact same set of things is new on this phone too?
03:23Well, it's actually a little bit more than that same stuff,
03:25but the Fold 4 also has an improved slightly slimmer hinge,
03:30which is one of the most important overall pieces of this phone.
03:33And it feels firm and confidence inspiring,
03:36and very satisfying to clap closed, which is great.
03:39It has a nice satin finish on the back with three colors,
03:42the gold, the black, and then this deep blue.
03:45And then it does in fact have a stronger Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the outside,
03:49paired with those aluminum rails.
03:50They've also updated the specs,
03:53again, with the same new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 inside,
03:56the highest end chip available.
03:57And it does have the same size 4,400 mAh battery as last year.
04:01And then there's a new camera system on the back as well.
04:04So, these folding phones have never quite had exactly the same set of cameras
04:08as the highest end flagships, you know, the ultra phones,
04:11but they do typically get right up underneath as the next best thing.
04:15So, this Fold here has a 50 megapixel primary camera,
04:18a 12 megapixel ultra wide, and a 3X telephoto,
04:22which will let you get up to 30X space zoom.
04:24I will definitely be testing these new cameras
04:26in these flipping folding phones in the full review,
04:29just to see how good they are.
04:30But if I was guessing, if I was guessing,
04:32they'll probably perform pretty similar to like an S22 Plus,
04:36which is to say pretty great.
04:37We'll see though.
04:38And then, surprise, surprise,
04:39the Fold 4 also has one big new software feature.
04:43This time, it's on the inside screen,
04:45and that's the dock at the bottom.
04:47So, you'll notice when you open an app,
04:49the entire dock shrinks down to the bottom into this sort of bar,
04:52kind of like a Windows taskbar.
04:54And from there, you can easily launch recent apps
04:58or hop back and forth between apps quickly,
05:00or even launch straight into multitasking
05:02with two or three apps on the screen at once.
05:04It's a small change,
05:05but I think it makes a big difference
05:07to keeping it easy and fluid
05:09to quickly multitask on a phone like this.
05:11I don't know about you, but when I open the phone up
05:12and it's got this huge seven inch screen inside,
05:15I just want to use a lot of stuff and multitask.
05:17So, you've got the button to open up any app
05:20all the way on the left.
05:21You've got the navigation buttons all the way to the right.
05:24I really do like this taskbar.
05:25And then just flipping through the device for a bit,
05:26the rest is very familiar to what we've seen.
05:30Just again, slightly refined.
05:32The outside cover screen is actually three millimeters wider.
05:35So, it's a slightly different aspect ratio,
05:38again, thanks to slimmer bezels.
05:40And you can just barely tell by eyeballing it.
05:42And on the inside,
05:43the bezels all the way around again
05:44are just slightly thinner.
05:45And the crease through the middle, to my eye,
05:47is a little bit less visible than it is on the Flip,
05:50though it's not too different from last year.
05:52Basically where if you're looking at the content
05:54on the screen, you really don't notice it too much
05:56because you don't pass your finger over it
05:59when you're scrolling,
06:00like maybe you would on the vertically folding phone.
06:02Maybe if you're a big stylist person,
06:03you'll get the whole S Pen case and everything.
06:06And then you really notice the crease
06:08when you draw a lot over the middle.
06:10But yeah, I'm not one of those people.
06:12So basically, it's there if you're looking for it,
06:14but it's not really too bad if you're not.
06:16You know what else though,
06:17you probably didn't notice if you weren't looking for it,
06:19the new under display selfie camera
06:22right up here on the top right-hand side.
06:24So, Samsung is using a new second generation
06:26hidden selfie camera up here.
06:28And from my very limited experience,
06:31it is actually very impressive
06:32just how well it's able to hide itself
06:34and stay out of view,
06:35even more so than last year's first gen.
06:37But the images that come out of it
06:40definitely do not look any better.
06:42Like that was the big weakness
06:43of last year's Fold's hidden camera.
06:45And it appears to absolutely be
06:48a weakness of this one again.
06:49You can see it does a fair amount of processing
06:51with the still photos,
06:52but I imagine a video call won't look too pretty.
06:55You know, I'll give it a shot.
06:56Maybe the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 will surprise me,
06:58but that's how it looks.
06:59Aside from that though,
07:00there's nothing fundamentally different
07:02in any technology across the board with this phone.
07:04It is still very much the productivity-based tablet
07:08in your pocket that we know and love
07:09just settling into its form.
07:11Basically, if we expect any sort of different shape
07:13with a foldable from Samsung,
07:15that's probably just gonna be a whole new phone,
07:16just a whole new model.
07:17So in the meantime,
07:18this Fold 4 launches again at the same price as last year,
07:21$1799.
07:23So I'll review both of these phones for sure,
07:25but low-key,
07:25maybe the most interesting new hardware to me here
07:28is actually the new pair of watches here
07:31that Samsung's dropped.
07:32There's a new Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.
07:36Some of you are already remembering
07:37that I haven't reviewed too many smartwatches in the past,
07:40but maybe leave a thumbs up or a comment on this video
07:42if you're interested in something on these.
07:44Basically, if you've been paying attention
07:46to Apple rumors lately,
07:48there's been all kinds of stuff brewing
07:49about maybe an Apple Watch refresh in September
07:52and maybe an Apple Watch Pro.
07:54But hey, here comes Samsung right out the gate
07:56just ahead of that with a Watch 5 and a Watch 5 Pro.
08:00So the Watch 5 has a sweet new design
08:02with a reshaped curvature
08:03and actually a flatter contact area on the bottom,
08:06so there's more contact with your wrist
08:08for more accurate readings of everything.
08:10There's two sizes, 40 or 44 millimeters,
08:12and each one has a 15% bigger battery than before,
08:15thanks to the new shape,
08:16for a claimed up to 50 hours on a charge.
08:19There's a nice bright OLED display on the front
08:21and they're covering it
08:22with a sapphire crystal glass this year.
08:24And the whole thing's IP68 water-resistant,
08:27looks pretty familiar.
08:28Plus they've added things like detailed sleep tracking
08:30with stages,
08:31which is another thing Apple just added to the Apple Watch.
08:33But the Watch 5 Pro is interesting
08:36because it's a more fitness
08:38and adventure-focused version of the same thing.
08:40So when you see them back-to-back,
08:41you'll notice it's thicker.
08:43It's a little more of a ruggedized version
08:45than the standard watch.
08:46They're only doing it in a large 45 millimeter size
08:49and the display is sort of inset
08:51behind these titanium bezels.
08:53And the sapphire crystal cover glass,
08:55they say is even stronger than the standard.
08:57I assume that's just because it's thicker.
08:58And they fit a 590 milliamp hour battery into this thing.
09:02So pretty massive battery
09:03without actually looking like a super huge watch.
09:06So they promise one and a half times the battery life
09:09of the standard watch,
09:10putting it up at 80 hours.
09:12And that is what I'm curious to test.
09:13So the Watch 5 Bluetooth only starts at 279
09:16and then the Watch 5 Pro at Bluetooth only
09:19will start at 449.
09:20So interesting new hardware developments from Samsung here.
09:24Very curious to see that stuff.
09:25Let me know in the comments
09:27what you're interested in seeing for the full review.
09:29I am definitely looking forward to testing it.
09:31But in the meantime, get subscribed if you haven't already.
09:33That's how you'd be among the first to see the review.
09:35That's been it.
09:35Thanks for watching.
09:37Catch you guys later.
09:38Peace.
