15 December - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Hello. Whilst large parts of the country will be dry for the next couple of days, in northwest
00:05Scotland, the rain is really likely to build up through the course of the weekend. More
00:09on that in a moment. But here's the bigger picture. You can see this stream of cloud.
00:14That's low pressure and a weather front. But high pressure is dominating down to the south.
00:18And that, as I said, is keeping most places dry. But around the top of it, these weather
00:22fronts will be moving in. And the isobars are quite close together as well. So it's
00:25quite windy. And that's generating more cloud and rain across northwest Scotland. So a damp
00:31day here. Some rain and drizzle at times. Just filtering south into central and maybe
00:36southern Scotland. The odd spot of drizzle is possible elsewhere. But most just drab
00:40and cloudy. Some breaks in the cloud over eastern England could allow a hint of sunshine
00:45to come through. But as I said, most will just stay pretty grey. Fairly mild, though.
00:50Single digits across the east. But further west, 10, 11, 12 as the high. But it is quite
00:55windy, particularly in that northwestern corner. Very gusty conditions here through
00:59the night and indeed for much of tomorrow. The rain may ease for a time, but then we'll
01:03see further outbreaks of rain coming back into western Scotland during the night. Maybe
01:08a little of rain edging into Northern Ireland and Cumbria, too. But again, most places,
01:12certainly across England, Wales, will stay dry through the night with that blanket of
01:16cloud that will keep things pretty mild. If we see some more breaks in the cloud, a little
01:21misty across parts of eastern England, maybe the odd fog patch temperatures here could
01:25dip down to the mid single digits. But again, in the west, very mild. Some places staying
01:30in double figures through the night. OK, into the weekend. And again, for most places, cloudy,
01:36blustery, but dry sums it up. The main exception to that will be that northwestern corner of
01:41Scotland where the rain gets heavier through the course of Saturday and it's going to linger
01:46here into Sunday. And so it could cause some problems. The winds continue to strengthen
01:51as well. So a very blustery and wet day in the northwest elsewhere. A lot of wind may
01:56generate a little bit of rain and drizzle over the hills of West Wales and northwest
02:00England. But most places, again, just cloudy and dry and very mild for the time of year.
02:07Temperatures again getting up to 12, maybe 13 degrees Celsius, but feeling cooler with
02:12the strength of the wind. Now, wet and windy weather doesn't stop in northwest Scotland.
02:17It keeps going through Saturday evening and into Sunday as well. Again, further south,
02:21just a lot of cloud on Saturday night. Some rain and drizzle at times over coast and hills
02:26in the west. Rain in the northwest being caused by this wiggling, waving weather fronts, which
02:32sticks around into Sunday. The high pressure is still close by to the south. But some question
02:38marks about how quickly this rain starts to drift further south. But with it set to linger
02:43through Saturday, Saturday night and into Sunday morning, we have issued an amber weather
02:47warning for eastern parts of Skye, western parts of the Highlands and northern parts
02:52of Argyle and Butte. In this zone, 100, maybe 150 millimetres of rain could fall. More than
02:58that possible on some western hills. That is likely to cause some disruption. Mudslides
03:03are possible. Interruptions to the transport network. Obviously, the potential for flooding
03:08and fast flowing rivers as well. That rain will spread a little further south also into
03:12parts of southwest Scotland and maybe parts of Northern Ireland by the end of the day.
03:17But again, further south, many places just dry and cloudy, but quite breezy on Sunday
03:22and it will be another mild day after another very mild night. Please do keep up to date
03:27with the latest on those weather warnings and on the latest across social media. But
