00:00Good afternoon and a very happy new year from everyone here at the Met Office.
00:042022 is starting like 2021 finished, exceptionally mild for the time of year.
00:09There'll be some bright spells around though through this afternoon, but watch out for a few showers in places.
00:14And it's quite a blustery picture, particularly in the North West, where some very strong winds are likely in the North West of Scotland.
00:21It's all down to low pressure dominating through the next few days, those isobars quite tightly packed together,
00:26indicating some strong winds at times and some more organised spells of wet weather crossing the South as well at times.
00:32Winds swing to a northerly direction though by Tuesday, bringing much colder conditions to all areas with a threat of some wintry showers at times.
00:40Back to this afternoon though, and we have got one band of showers currently working its way eastwards across central and southeastern parts of England,
00:47but many places having a mostly dry afternoon with some bright or sunny spells.
00:51There'll be some showers there across Northern Ireland and North West Scotland, and here it will be very windy.
00:57There's a risk of severe gales across the far North West of Scotland with a wind warning in place here.
01:02And for everyone, another very mild day for the time of year with highs of 14 or 15 and locally even 16 Celsius.
01:09Through this evening, further bands of rain or showers will spread their way from west to east across the country.
01:15So expect some rain in most places through tonight.
01:18But with that cloud and that breeze persisting through the early hours, temperatures won't fall away too far,
01:24and it will be another very mild night for the time of year. Some places not falling below double figures.
01:30Through Sunday morning, it stays changeable with further bands of rain or showers spreading from west to east,
01:36but there will be some sunnier and drier periods in between, so not a complete washout on Sunday.
01:41But some strong winds are also likely, some gales in the far North,
01:44and also perhaps down towards some southern coastal counties through the afternoon.
01:48Another very mild picture, though, through the course of Sunday.
01:51Not quite as exceptionally mild as it has been, but temperatures widely reaching double figures.
01:56Then next week, it turns much colder, particularly by Tuesday.
01:59There'll be a threat of some wintry showers, particularly in the north, and it will stay quite windy.
02:03So it will stay quite cold. For further details, though, please make sure you follow us on our social media channels.
02:09Bye for now.
