00:19In Monroe, Doug White stops believing in God after his younger and very humorous brother
00:23Jeffrey passes away from a sudden heart attack.
00:26In Connecticut, there is flight instructor, Kerry Sorensen, who lost his parents in a
00:31plane accident.
00:32In the control tower at RSW Southwest Florida International Airport, Fort Myers, is air
00:37traffic controller Dan Favio who is struggling with his job and personal life.
00:42Somewhere else in Fort Myers is little aviation enthusiast Donna Braley, who is engrossed
00:46in a flight simulator on her computer.
00:49While each of these people lives a completely different life and has no idea that the others
00:53even exist, they are about to cross paths in the most offbeat way.
00:57Doug White, his wife Terry, and their daughters Maggie and Bailey get on a private jet and
01:01are headed to their other home in Louisiana.
01:04The jet takes off and climbs when Joe Cabuck, the pilot, suffers a stroke and passes away.
01:09Doug has close to no experience in aviation, having had only an introductory flight session
01:13with his brother Jeffrey.
01:15As the jet is about to reach Fort Myers, Miami Center transfers the call to Fort Myers traffic
01:20control, where it is up to Dan Favio to make sure that Doug's family lands safely.
01:25Dan calls his friend Carrie, who is highly experienced in flying a King Air aircraft,
01:29the jet that Doug and his family are in.
01:30Meanwhile, Donna tunes into live air traffic and tracks the plane's route on her computer
01:35from home, hoping for the best with bated breath.
01:38Will Doug be able to land the jet safely?
01:41Will Terry's prayers work?
01:43On a wing and a prayer has the answers.
01:46A true incident.
01:48The events that unfold in On a Wing and a Prayer are real and occurred on Easter Sunday,
01:52that is April 12, 2009.
01:55After Jeffrey passed away, Doug had trouble believing in God and was angry for the way
01:59in which he lost not just Jeffrey but, before that, his father and his uncle.
02:04All three people died of heart attacks.
02:07Doug is angry at the way they were snatched from him and that too, in a way, they didn't
02:11deserve it all.
02:12This makes him abandon his faith, as we later see when he tells his wife to take care of
02:16praying while he tries to land the plane.
02:19In other words, he would rather do what he knows is logical and plausible to save his
02:23family than pray.
02:24Dan and Carrie work together and try every way in which they can help Doug land the jet
02:28safely.
02:29Carrie and his girlfriend Ashley even built a makeshift cockpit so that he could better
02:33maneuver Doug step by step.
02:35What follows is dangerous coordination among the parties to land the airplane.
02:40It isn't easy, as Doug fails to land the plane the first time and pulls it up again, only
02:44to head inside the thunderous clouds.
02:46Dan's phone is dead, which means that Carrie cannot be reached.
02:50This is when Doug remembers God and calls out to him.
02:53The very next moment, the phone in lifeless Joe's pocket starts to ring.
02:58Ashley has found the number of the registered pilot of the jet.
03:01Maggie, who is with her sister Bailey in the cabin, takes the phone out of Joe's pocket
03:05and hands it to her father, Doug, who is finally able to listen to Carrie's instructions directly
03:09for the first time.
03:11God seems to have heard him.
03:13Then begins a joint effort by Carrie and Doug to land the jet at Fort Myers.
03:18While we could say that God, or whatever superpower there is, heard Doug's call, we cannot deny
03:22that it was brave people whose unwavering efforts were what saved Doug and his family.
03:27Some may say that it was divine intervention that Ashley found the captain's phone number,
03:31without which Carrie wouldn't have been able to guide Doug.
03:34Others may say that it was Carrie who told Ashley about the pilot's registered contact
03:38being available online, so there was nothing divine there but the presence of her mind.
03:43Be that as it may, Doug's prayer and Carrie's idea overlapped and eventually saved the
03:47White family.
03:48Dana was tracking each and every move by the plane and listening to the instructions until
03:52Dan's phone went dead.
03:54She then decides to head to RSW Southwest Florida International Airport with her friend
03:58Buggy and wait to find out what happens.
04:00While Dana's POV doesn't concern the main plot, it does show how she, at that young
04:04an age, is smartly able to deduce what's happening to the plane by looking at the plane's movement
04:08on her screen, taking note of the weather, and listening to air traffic control.
04:13It just shows her enthusiasm to become a pilot, and by the end of the film, we do believe
04:17that she will.
04:19This is our faith in Dana, just as Terry had faith in her husband and knew that he would
04:22protect his family.
04:24There is this feeling of joy to see Dana, and how her latest experience only made her
04:28more determined to strive towards her dream rather than reconsidering it.
04:32Perhaps there is a Dana in all of us, waiting for a sign that reminds us that it is always
04:36worth it to dream.
04:38Does Doug land the plane?
04:40Throughout the events that occurred, Terry never lost faith, and before Doug began to
04:44land the plane the second time, she headed back inside the cabin and started praying
04:47with her daughters, telling them how much she loved them.
04:50Finally, in the ultimate act, Carrie tells Doug to let go of the yoke and the rudder
04:54pedals and let the jet land on its own.
04:57Doug calls out to God to let him protect his family and lets go of the controls.
05:02The plane lands on the runway on its own, bringing a safe end to what felt like a never-ending,
05:06tedious torment.
05:08After the plane comes to a halt, Doug apologizes to God for his doubts and sees his brother
05:12sitting beside him in the cockpit.
05:14Whether we like it or not, we have to admit that faith helps us get through even the worst
05:17of times.
05:19And that's all that's needed in this life.
05:21On a Wing and a Prayer is thus an aptly named film that shows how a person manages to fly
05:26by having faith, praying.
05:28It is a nice film, and keeping in mind that whatever transpired in it is based on what
05:32really happened, it becomes much more extraordinary as well as reinforces the importance of faith
05:36in life.
