00:06sila'y nagbibigay ng karangalan sa Pilipinas sa larangan ng theater at music.

00:17At para ibahagi sa atin ang kanilang journey, ayam, makakakwentuhan po natin this morning

00:37Micael, kwentuhan mo naman kami, paano nagsimula yung pagmamahal mo sa teatro.

00:42And we heard, eleven years old pa lang, no? Nagpe-perform ka na.

00:47Because I think, pagbata ka, kakanta ka lang, pero theater is a different, di ba, art form.

00:55Magkwentuhan mo naman kami.

00:56So, I started sa Ateneo. Obviously, it's a boys' school.

01:00So, it was more for a social reason na I went to do theater.

01:04Kasi that was the only time that I was gonna be able to meet parang co-ed.

01:08Tapos, you know, after doing it quite a while, I realized it was a lot of fun.

01:14Tapos, you know, the more you do it and the more you kinda realize, like, I can do this for a long time.

01:21So, I started looking into Repertory Philippines, doing a few bits here and there.

01:28Tapos, nung ano, when I moved to the UK, at the age of 14, I did a lot of local shows.

01:36So, a mix of play and musicals.

01:38Tapos, it was more for an opportunity for me to explore music and different styles of musicals

01:43that I wasn't really familiar with.

01:45Tapos, kasi it's so accessible here.

01:48Tapos, York is a very thriving community of local talent.

01:51Tapos, I went into university and then still continuing doing that till now.

01:55Nice! Talagang passion ni Mikael ang musical theater, no?

01:59For Ayana naman, Ayana, paano nagsimula ang musical journey mo mula Pilipinas hanggang sa UK?

02:05At anong dahilan? Bakit musical theater yung pinasok mo?

02:11So, na-introduce po sakin ang musical theater at a young age of 7.

02:15Kasi po ang mother ko, nakakita siya ng on-sale DVD copy of Sound of Music.

02:20So, from there, nagsimula na siya.

02:22Diret-diret siya na yung mga extracurricular classes in singing and violin.

02:28And from there, pinush ko na lang all the way through my college and my master's,

02:34yung musical theater training ko.

02:36And I really pushed musical theater kasi yun lang yung,

02:41I really pushed musical theater kasi yun lang yung time na kung saan pwede kang mag-express

02:47ng kahit anong thoughts mo na walang judgment.

02:50And at the same time, ang ganda ng mga new works na lumalabas,

02:57na whether it be a song, a play, a musical, maganda yung mga lumalabas na emotions.

03:05It can be turned into something more artistic.

03:08Hindi lang siya in a form of words or books.

03:11It can be turned into something else.

03:13So, it has no limit and it has no judgment.

03:17It's like you can express yourself freely.

03:20Imagine, Mage, 7 years old pa lang si Ayana.

03:24Aya, kumbaga, iminulat na siya ng kanyang parents sa musical theater.

03:28Alright.

03:29Mikkel, ito naman, sa mga character na iyong ginampanan,

03:34aling role yung pinaka-mahirap at bakit?

03:37And also, your favorite character na ginampanan mo?

03:42I mean, yung mahirap, I think, I mean, it's really hard to say kung anong pinaka-mahirap

03:47but I know the one that was the most parang energy-taking, I think.

03:54Kasi, it was the first time I ever got a lead

03:57and that was a couple of years ago playing Seymour sa Little Shop of Horrors.

04:02Tapos, it was really exciting kasi it was the first time na there was an Asian

04:07or even a Filipino lead here sa York, specifically.

04:11And it was such an honor to be, you know, doing it sa York Theatre Royal.

04:16You know, the thing was, like, I never left the stage.

04:18Tapos, vocally, napaka-demanding din siya.

04:20Like, it's, you know, it's a lot to take on

04:23but it was so rewarding that I never found it talaga difficult as a role.

04:28It was just, you know, for me, it's a very treasurable moment.

04:31Tsaka, I'll always look back to that with very, very high happy moments, you know.

04:36How about your favorite role?

04:40Yung ano, I think, I think it's still that one.

04:44Favorite ko talagang role yung si Seymour.

04:46I would honestly do it again and again.

04:48Tapos, I mean, so far, we know, like, mga three Filipino-Americans

04:52now playing it on different spaces in the U.S.

04:56So, like, sila Darren Criss, George Salazar,

05:00tapos tsaka si Conrad Ricamora.

05:05So, like, you know, trying to follow in their footsteps

05:07is a really, really honorable thing.

05:09So, yun talaga favorite role ko.

05:15from your favorite role?

05:18Kaya na ba this morning?

05:22Medyo late na siguro.

05:24Baka mamaya yung mga neighbors magalit.

05:28Okay, for Ayana.

05:31Ayana, ano yung karanasan na pinaka hindi mo malilimutan

05:34sa mga pagganap mo sa theater acting?

05:39I guess yung number one na notice ko is about

05:43my personality and how much nag-shift siya.

05:47I did two specific dancing roles

05:51na medyo considered raunchy sa culture natin.

05:55Pero kasi it is part of the story

05:58na may malaking significant siya dun sa storyline.

06:02So, I forgive that.

06:04Pero kasi I'm not really a full-fledged dancer.

06:07And at the same time, I do not like wearing

06:10those kind of clothings.

06:12Pero I did not expect na

06:14stepping into a different character

06:17can really bring out a new side of you

06:20na hindi mo may expect na lalabas.

06:22Talagang being in a character

06:25really shows you different sides of you

06:28and you get a chance to learn more about yourself,

06:30how people can perceive you,

06:32how you want to control some of your actions.

06:36It's a form of self-reflection din.

06:38So, you're having fun while discovering something new.

06:42Wow, I think it's a nice thing, no?

06:45You're enjoying something at the same time

06:48you can express, reflect about yourself.

06:52Eto, curious naman kami,

06:54it's so nice to have a kababayan with you abroad.

07:00Mikhail and Diana?

07:02Mikhail, kwetohan mo naman kami.

07:06So, actually, we met down south sa London

07:10kasi we had a West End audition at the time.

07:13And it was a massive coincidence

07:15kasi me being from New York,

07:17we started talking,

07:19I was like, oh, Filipino, Filipino, di ba?

07:21Tapos she said that she was from Leeds

07:23which is not too far away from here at all.

07:25Tapos exciting e, kasi

07:27I don't know about you, Ayana,

07:29kasi I don't know how you feel about

07:31meeting a Filipino in the UK doing musical theatre,

07:33which is quite rare, I think.

07:36Well, I actually like the feeling.

07:39Mm-hmm.

07:41Well, I like the feeling about it

07:43kasi it's like, that's so nice

07:45to see someone who has

07:47already been here for a long time

07:49and has assimilated

07:51or adjusted to the culture

07:53and I kinda wanna learn that way.

07:55Yan din yung reason kung bakit ako nag-pursue ng

07:57studies here is to somehow

07:59incorporate yung cultures natin

08:01with them.

08:03And the fact that there's someone here who actually has done that,

08:05I was like, this is amazing.

08:07And it's a great way to

08:09feel at home then.

08:11Like, I am not,

08:13you know, somehow

08:15it kinda helps with the homesickness, ba.

08:17So, yeah.

08:29different culture here

08:31sa music industry?

08:41Number one na nanotice ko

08:43is that they, I guess

08:45I've mentioned this earlier na

08:47it's when you're doing

08:49something experimental or any type of

08:51new show, they are not

08:53judgy. They will let you do

08:55whatever the hell you want.

08:57Whether it be right or wrong,

08:59hahanapan ng paraan para maging

09:01okay siya sa show. Para mainagay yan

09:03sa show. Yan yung isang

09:05malaking blessing to it kasi

09:07they really emphasize

09:09creative freedom and

09:11it's such a respectable

09:13and open space.

09:15So, with this show,

09:17we approached it slightly differently.

09:19So, even though I'm listed as

09:21co-director atsaka kami in the show,

09:23we try to do it in a very

09:25collaborative process. Para

09:27kasi we need to have every voice heard

09:29kasi iba-ibang lahi has every different

09:31experience and in York

09:33especially, it's very hard to find a

09:35multicultural group like this

09:37that are featured.

09:39So, you know,

09:41it's very exciting to be able to tell

09:43individual stories and yet still be a

09:45unit together

09:47that can, you know,

09:49that's a very strong, talented cast

09:51that can still move the show forward.

09:55So, meron ba kayo mga upcoming projects

09:57dapat abangan ng ating mga ko-RSP.

10:05this show that we are actually doing together right now

10:07is called Songs for a New Year.

10:09It's

10:11National Center for Early Music sa York

10:13from the

10:1524th to the 26th of October

10:17and hopefully yung mga UK kababayan

10:19will come see us because it is a very special

10:21show that features a lot

10:23about our different cultures

10:25especially Asian American and

10:27Filipino and we would really like to

10:29see that featured

10:31and be more prominent in yung local

10:33theater dito.
