00:00Okay, so the Patriots should be 2-0.
00:16You know this.
00:18I know this.
00:19I've spent over 12 hours today poring over the film, taking the notes, you know the deal.
00:23We got EPAs, we got CPOEs, we got success rates, we've got everything and more that
00:28you could possibly want and yet I sit here and go, the Patriots have two big problems
00:32on their hands.
00:33Number one, you can tell me this, is pass protection.
00:36For a second straight week, Jacoby Brissette was under fire like this dude was dropped
00:39into a trench in pick either of your favorite World Wars, right?
00:43He faced pressure in more than 40% of his dropbacks.
00:47Basically the same percentage he saw in Cincinnati and in the last nine days, Patriots have not
00:51only lost one left tackle to injury, but another to irony because Chukwuma Okorafor, that left
00:56tackle literally left.
00:58So number two is a little bit more fixable and this is something that I wrestled with
01:03a little bit after the game.
01:04I wrote, hey, the Patriots got outcoached and not in a way that was like, oh my God,
01:08Drodd Mayo got pantsed by Mike McDonald running circles around him giggling like he's in middle
01:13school.
01:14It's just to say the small edges that were there that the Patriots needed, obviously
01:18late fourth quarter lead, trying to get better field position and put the game away and score
01:24just couldn't do it.
01:26And when I dove deeper, I found some more problems.
01:29So problem number two is the play callers.
01:32We'll just call them green.
01:33Okay.
01:34You get a grace period when you're Alex Van Pelt and you have not called play since this
01:37is my favorite trick, the Obama administration, but Obama 2009 since I was sorry, folks out
01:43there in high school.
01:44Okay.
01:45You get a grace period.
01:46If you're Demarcus Covington, who was just out of high school, guys, 35 first year calling
01:50plays.
01:51But when I looked at this game, the Seahawks outfoxed both of them.
01:57Now you could say, Hey, Mike McDonald's a really good coach.
01:59We talked about this with Bill Barnwell.
02:00Did that live up to that or what?
02:02In a way, of course, I know you didn't want to come true, but Alex Van Pelt first three
02:07drives of the game.
02:08He's cooking.
02:09He's got a touchdown.
02:10He's got a field goal.
02:11The Patriots have a 56.5% success rate.
02:13Very good.
02:14Two thumbs up.
02:15Borat style.
02:17Four drives though, that gets cut in half.
02:20Okay.
02:21Uh, actually by more than half, it goes down to 23.5%.
02:25So the Patriots are stubbing their toe, bashing their head against the wall until the fourth
02:29quarter.
02:30I mean, he makes an adjustment.
02:31It was just a little too conservative.
02:32By now you've heard the receivers had three catches.
02:35When you look at Demarcus Covington, I thought they had a cool game plan.
02:38This was right out of the gates.
02:39Like, Hey, what you got?
02:41You spin the dial, Mike McDonald, look at the straddle.
02:43I just picked up and watch it go.
02:45They had simulated pressures.
02:47You had overload pressures from Carver too.
02:49You were spinning into zone blitzes, all this different stuff.
02:51And Gino Smith said, okay, that's, that's cool that you can do all this.
02:55This is Marcus Covington.
02:56I'm just going to throw it to DK Metcalf.
02:59And that's how it went.
03:00The Patriots by no means made Seattle play left-handed.
03:02And in fact, Seattle waited them out.
03:06And you see this in numbers, and I'm just going to give you off the top and then we're
03:08going to get to the rundown.
03:10Seattle knew at some point Covington and the Patriots were going to go into their bag and
03:13they're going to pull out and all out blitz, right?
03:16This is what they do.
03:17They told me guys in the locker room, Hey, we're going to be more aggressive.
03:20And so that means blitzing.
03:21And they've got a couple of different variations, right?
03:23Just the all out blitz man to man.
03:25You've got the sit at the sticks, look at the quarterback, breaking anything that short,
03:30which is what happened to DK Metcalf touchdown and whatever variation it was.
03:34Gino Smith went 10 of 12 for 171 yards and a touchdown plus a sack in a scramble versus
03:43the blitz.
03:45And it gets worse.
03:46There was one drop in those incompletions.
03:49And number two on DK Metcalf touchdown, Bill Belichick came back to haunt his old defense
03:55because the blocking scheme that Seattle used, he may or may not have invented it.
04:00And if it wasn't him, it was someone on the Patriots staff back in 2005.
04:03Now we've gone fully into the weeds.
04:04Let's zoom out.
04:05We're going to talk about the offense.
04:06We're going to talk about the defense.
04:07We don't have game balls to hand out today because they lost.
04:09So we're going to do, we need to talk.
04:12What would NFL film say?
04:13And then mailbag, let me get out of here.
04:14But before we do all of that, even though the Patriots lost on Sunday, you know, you
04:18can still win with prize picks.
04:20Here's how we talk a lot about Drake May in this podcast, right?
04:23Rookie quarterback, top three pick.
04:25There's another rookie quarterback picked in the top three, Caleb Williams, who can
04:29win you money on price picks.
04:32Because if you put him in your stat projections going more or less, and he gets more than
04:37half a passing yard, boom, check.
04:39That's a win.
04:40Prize picks in case you missed it is America's number one daily fantasy sports app, where
04:43it's literally just that, you against the numbers they provide.
04:46It's the simplest, fastest way, for me to say this, to win money while you watch sports.
04:50Just pick two or more stat projections for a player.
04:53Go more or less, and that's it.
04:56Plus, if you pick the right four players, more or less, you can win up to 100 times
05:01your money.
05:02So, do like I do during basketball season.
05:05And we just had baseball season, RIP to the Red Sox.
05:08Spice up your week a little bit.

05:25Prize Picks run your game.
05:27Okay.
05:28Let's get to the offense right here.
05:29Number one.
05:30Yeah, it's a problem that the receivers had three catches for 19 yards.
05:36I was hoping at some point today, amid all the film, and I'm going to go run and do TV
05:40later.
05:41So, in case I sound like I'm speaking too fast, and there was someone very kind on the
05:44YouTube comments to point out last week, hey, Callahan, I can't even put you on 0.8, because
05:49it's still too fast.
05:50And when I do lower than that, you sound like you've had too many.
05:53So, please slow down.
05:54Twitch said, okay, I'll stop speaking so fast.
05:57And I'm sorry.
05:58But if it happens again, now you know, not to say, oh, look at me do TV.
06:01It's just we're in a rush.
06:02There's a lot going on.
06:03Anyway, I wanted to find the stat that said 82 or whatever receivers in the NFL had more
06:09receiving yards and catches than the Patriots entire receiving court did.
06:14And then I thought about it for a second.
06:16You know how close the Patriots were to winning this game, despite the receivers catching
06:21three balls for 19 yards?
06:22It was a field goal that was blocked.
06:25And then just a defensive stop somewhere in the 99 yards before the Seahawks would have
06:30to get to the end zone.
06:31Those sound perfectly reasonable to me, except we know that didn't happen.
06:34So I don't really want to play the result and start here with the offense.
06:38We just did the play calling part.
06:39We'll dive deeper into that.
06:40As again, Seattle adjusted, just cut the Patriots success rate by more than half in the middle
06:45quarters.
06:47I don't really care about that.
06:48That's playing the result.
06:49The process was bad either way.
06:51But if the Patriots won, you know, just as well as I do, that this would have been, look
06:55at this team.
06:56They won, even though their receivers got to hang out and sit my ties or Oktoberfest
07:02or whatever it is on the sideline.
07:04And they're 2-0.
07:05And they could be 3-0 this Thursday.
07:06Of course, it didn't happen.
07:07That's not how we're talking about it.
07:08Now it's a five alarm fire.
07:10But my point is this.
07:12You do not just get to blame Alex Van Pelt or the pass protection, which was dreadful,
07:17or even Jacoby Percet.
07:18It goes to the receivers, too.
07:20The Seahawks increased their man coverage rate late in the game.
07:25Around the second quarter, they said, OK, cool.
07:26You know what we're going to do?
07:27We're going to load the box.
07:28We're going to play man coverage.
07:30Against man coverage, the Patriots averaged three yards per play.
07:35Against zone coverage, it was five and a half.
07:37As the old saying goes, when it comes to receivers, coaches get them open against zone.
07:42When it's man to man, it's up to you.
07:45So to me, when I watched this film, Demario Douglas had the only case for what the hell
07:48is going on, a case he's now taking publicly, by the way, speaking in the locker room today
07:52to our guy, Doug Kai, among others, saying, yeah, last year, I felt like I could prove
07:57myself this year.
07:58Nah, not so much.
08:00Speaking though of Jacoby Percet and the pass game, I should know better than to do this
08:06after week two because I knew this was coming.
08:08As soon as the Patriots lose, as soon as the offense stumbles, you're going to have folks
08:13out there clamoring for Drake May.
08:16We're going to do it anyway.
08:17I'm breezing through this yellow light, OK, because here's the deal.
08:22I know how it goes.
08:23Offense struggles.
08:24Team loses.
08:25That's a quarterback.
08:26Fire the coach.
08:27OK, no one's firing Jarrod, man.
08:30So of course you want to start the top three pick for Jacoby Percet, who only had, God,
08:34I don't know what they're in here, like 149 passing yards, right?
08:37Here's the problem with that.
08:38I have a question for you.
08:40Do you want Drake May behind an offensive line that has been blitzed all of six times in
08:46two games and allowed pressure on 45% of those dropbacks?
08:52All dropbacks.
08:53It seems hazardous to me, and you can say, oh, Drake May would escape better and he would
08:57throw long.
08:58And you know what?
08:59Yeah, he probably would throw a little bit longer.
09:00This dude is a gunslinger.
09:02We saw it in North Carolina.
09:03The good plays, the bad plays.
09:04He's going to chuck it.
09:05But for two weeks, would he rank 10th in QBR, which is a refined version of passer rating
09:10that actually accounts for fumbles and scrambles in game situation, unlike passer rating?
09:15Would he rank 10th in success rate, which means how well are you doing as a quarterback,
09:19keeping your offense on schedule?
09:20Would he even be 15th in EPA per play?
09:23Because Jacoby Brissett is, Jacoby Brissett right now is walking the same path Mac Jones
09:29did to his utter demise in New England.
09:32Getting overloaded with pressure in weeks one and week two, going to play the Jets in
09:35week three.
09:36We all know what happened to Dallas a week before last year in New Orleans.
09:38After that, Mac lost his mind, okay?
09:40Jacoby Brissett is not losing his mind right now.
09:42He's keeping the whole offense together.
09:45And I get that when you watch him take three sacks like he did on Sunday, you think it's
09:49his fault.
09:50When in reality, he's doing an unbelievable job of taking bad situations and not making
09:56them worse.
09:57Because in the 28 times he's been hit or hurt, he has been sacked just four times.
10:03That 14% pressure to sack rate, again, when it's bad, how quickly does it go worse?
10:10For Jacoby Brissett, it's just 14% is among the best in the entire league, and it would
10:14be in any kind of season.
10:15It's a freaking miracle, because sacks kill drives.
10:21When pressure goes to sack, drives go in the toilet, right?
10:25You saw this on Sunday.
10:26Every time Brissett got sacked, the Patriots punted.
10:28When he was sidestepping rushers, extending, creating plays, and finding Hunter Henry down
10:32field, they often scored.
10:35That's it right now.
10:36And yeah, the accuracy is so-so.
10:38That's just who he is.
10:39You know what this was when you signed him, somewhere between the 20th and 30th best quarterback
10:42in the league.
10:43He's not going downfield.
10:44Spoiler alert, if you haven't watched the film, he doesn't have any freaking time.
10:47But what he's doing in the meantime is exactly what you hired him to do.
10:52Take the hits for Drake May until Drake May is ready, okay?
10:55Protect the football.
10:56The Patriots have not had a turnover in back-to-back games for the first time since December 2022.
11:02And he's avoiding pressure in a way that Matt Jones could not, Bailey Zappi could not, going
11:08back to Cam Newton could not, even towards the end in those stretches.
11:11And that's not a high bar, of course.
11:13But you're seeing the fact that the Patriots are in this game at the end, the power of
11:16not screwing it up.
11:18And no one knows how Drake May will perform, right?
11:21I know you're eager to find out.
11:23I'm a Drake May believer.
11:25He's going to start at some point.
11:26It's going to look great.
11:27We saw flashes in the preseason, but there's no possible way to know what it would actually
11:31look like, his effect on the offense, because we've never seen him play in real regular
11:36season NFL games before.
11:38I know what it looks like for Jacoby Brissett, and I gave you the numbers.
11:41It's been good enough for him, given the circumstances, the offensive line, the receivers,
11:47and the fact that the Patriots are already on their third tackle and we're not even at
11:49week three yet.
11:50Despite that, they could and should be 2-0.
11:54That's as much because of what the defense has done and what Jacoby Brissett has not
11:59allowed to happen to the offense.
12:01It's just a little harder to see.
12:03Okay, let's talk about Alex Van Pelt.
12:06This game plan worked.
12:07We saw it.
12:10First three drives, touchdown, field goal, success rate, as I mentioned, over 56%.
12:16Good across the board.
12:17What was that game plan?
12:18Well, they said, hey, Seattle, if you're going to stay back and do deep coverage, as we know
12:22you do, as Mike McDonald tends to, and a lot of teams have confidence, meaning one, Cincinnati
12:27and rushing us with four, that's fine.
12:29That leaves the middle of the field open.
12:30We're going to bulk up, Patriots ran 12 personnel, most of their snaps to their first three drives,
12:35which tells you how they want to play the game.
12:37Again, it worked.
12:38It worked because Jacoby Brissett was extending plays, like he did twice on the second drive,
12:42led to a touchdown, but also because Hunter Henry is an expert, a genius, a Mensa member
12:48at finding soft spots in the zone over the middle.
12:51They kept feeding Hunter Henry.
12:53Not only that, but Austin Hooper was on the field for a couple of passing downs, which
12:56to me was a little weird, especially in the red zone in place of DeMario Douglas.
13:02But that was the plan.
13:03Get bigger, run the ball.
13:05It was mostly man block runs.
13:06You saw some power, counter, duo, and this is the type of runs you want to work against
13:12the two high defense because whether you're pulling a guard from the right to left and
13:16power or left to right on counter, whatever the direction is, that gives you a numbers
13:21advantage on the other side.
13:22Defenses that choose to play with a lighter box, two high safeties, again, middle of the
13:27field open, don't really get to play the numbers game.
13:30They're giving that up to say, we'll keep the numbers in the back end and we'll see
13:33what we can do up front.
13:34Patriots said, cool again, 10 points.
13:37The issue was the Seahawks changed.
13:41They went a little more single high, not wholesale, but they definitely played a lot more man
13:46coverage and that started in the second quarter when over the next four drives, bringing into
13:50the fourth, play more man coverage, load in the box.
13:53The Patriots success rate went down to 23 and a half percent, less than half of what
13:58it was at the beginning.
14:00And part of this was not only just the Seahawks changes.
14:04It was that they seemed to have a tell as Jacoby Brissette said, but anytime that the
14:08Patriots didn't want to just run the ball or have Jacoby Brissette extend plays and
14:12get a little crazy in the pocket and they wanted to take shots, Seattle knew it was
14:16coming.
14:17Jacoby Brissette, there was a tell, there must've been a good tell they knew what was
14:20going on.
14:21And look, I might've missed something.
14:22I spent all day with the film.
14:24You don't get to all of it, especially little stuff and distributions and route concepts
14:28and formations that you can get really to the minutiae that's just automatic in the
14:32football facility.
14:33But if I had to guess about the tell, looking at what happened, I would say it was this.
14:38The times and places that Alex Van Pelt chose to call those plays, these deep play action
14:43shots we talked about all over the spring and in the summer, this is what the offense
14:46is, were just too obvious.
14:49Patriots get to midfield on their second drive.
14:52Between the forties where a lot of teams like to take these deep play action shots.
14:55Why?
14:56Because they have still half the field to go.
14:58So you've got the room to do it, but also the defenses are trying to keep you out of
15:02field goal range.
15:03Cause if you get another 10, 20 yards, you're right there.
15:05It's a scoring chance suddenly.
15:07So they want to do anything to keep you out of those 10 to 20 yards.
15:11So you go over the top of them, you go deep Alex Van Pelt, first and 10, they're at midfield
15:16Seattle as the Patriots call this deep play action shot brings the house in a way that
15:23Seattle before then Baltimore didn't really do.
15:26They'll get creative with zone pressures and SIM pressures and creepers and all this
15:29different stuff.
15:30But this was a, we're sending everybody.
15:32So Jacoby preset turns around, fakes the handoff, looks at the defense.
15:36Oh my God, everyone's in the backfield and he extends a play, finds Hunter Henry.
15:41But that play call was out of what I would say the rest of the game script and the menu
15:47sheet that the Seahawks were working from.
15:50They knew it was coming or they had a very, very good idea that was coming.
15:53The second one, early third quarter, Patriots get this fourth and one stop.
15:56Gino Smith goes to the QB sneak met by Kyle Duggar, met by Anthony Jennings, Raycon McMillan,
16:01boom, big stop, huge play, sudden change.
16:04So what they call that defense to offense, offensive coordinators love to call shot plays
16:10off of that to the folks who believe in momentum.
16:13You just ride in the wave.
16:14So what are the Patriots do in this space?
16:16There's very popular space, just like midfield, sudden change, first and 10 dials it up again
16:22in Seattle.
16:23This time doesn't blitz.
16:24They go, we'll keep our safeties back 30 yards downfield to the point.
16:28We still have five to 10 yards of cushion for your deep receivers coming at us.
16:32And Jacoby Berset turns around, doesn't have anyone in his lap, but looks at those safeties
16:36and says, well, this is a fun idea and scrambles for five yards.
16:40So the Patriots, when they did have protection or when they had an idea, they had the time
16:44and space to call the shot play.
16:45Seattle was just all over it, which to me, it was just, there was an obvious situation,
16:49a time and place that Van Pelt wanted to do this, which we talked about in the open.
16:53I think he gets a little bit of a grace period.
16:55You would hope though, that you start to mix in some of those shot plays at different times
16:59and different places because the Patriots need those to work.
17:03Drobmeyer said it today, we have to push the ball downfield.
17:06But I mentioned Seattle adjusting, more loaded boxes, more man coverage, success rate goes
17:11all the way down the hill.
17:12What changed in the end or after that, I should say, was not the Patriots suddenly started
17:18going to the receivers, which their game plan looked like they just weren't going to
17:23do anyway, because Devin Witherspoon, former top I pick, and Riquelon, the artist formally
17:26knows Riquelon, are really, really good in better corners than any of the Patriots receivers
17:31are receivers, is the Patriots change up the run game.
17:35So again, this was a man blocked game plan, power, counter, do all that stuff, which works
17:40against too high cover.
17:41So when you load the box and you're pressuring the line of scrimmage a little bit more, that's
17:44when you go outside zone.
17:46That's what Alex Van Pelt did in the fourth quarter.
17:49We're going to go side to side and let Antonio Gibson and remind you, Stevenson, who broke
17:53three tackles a piece, find a hole, hit it and go.
17:57And it wasn't just that Alex Van Pelt called for outside zone plays in the first five snaps
18:02of their last touchdown drive.
18:03It was that he sprinkled in a little variation pin and pull, which you would not have known
18:08this is offense or excuse me, outside zone just by looking at the movement.
18:12Because again, the pulling lineman generally speaks to man block scheme.
18:15This was not that.
18:16You notice David Andrews and a guard or a tackle on either side of him going with him
18:21and pin and pull.
18:23That's the pull.
18:24Andrews and a second lineman moving around in the direction of the play side, whatever
18:28play side that is, the tight end and or tackle pins or hens, the edge defender there pins
18:34them on the inside.
18:35So the lineman pulling around and get to space running back falls them.
18:38There's the pin, there's the pole.
18:40This is outside zone, which is a little man wrinkled to it.
18:42So anyway, the reason I bring this up is because a, that led to a touchdown drive for
18:47the first five plays on that drive.
18:49We're all outside zone and or pin or pull the next series that led to a field goal.
18:56What we saw then was Antonio Gibson go for 45 yards on what play hit and pull.
19:03So there's something to watch here and that there's an adjustment a little too late for
19:07me when you look at how well Seattle was doing, pressuring the line of scrimmage, pressuring
19:12your receivers, playing man coverage above 50% of the time after the first quarter.
19:18But they got there.
19:19Now the issue is when the Patriots had to pass, they had no shot.
19:23We talked about the protection.
19:24We talked about the receivers and man coverage, their success rate when they go to 11 personnel,
19:29three receivers, one running back, one tight end is freaking abysmal.
19:34It's 31%.
19:36And yet this is the most common personnel grouping they've used over 50% of the time
19:40against Cincinnati and Seattle.
19:43And so there needs to be a change, just period end of story.
19:47Either you change the receivers that get to take these snaps or you pivot even harder
19:52to 12 personnel, two tight ends, or maybe mess around with two running backs.
19:58Because what the Patriots have shown you is, yeah, they've got a fastball, baby.
20:01This is a one pitch pitcher who throws 102 and 102 is really scary coming at you.
20:06But if you get a hold of that, if you stop them on first and second down, you connect
20:09with this fastball.
20:10They've got nothing else.
20:11There's no changeup.
20:12There's no plan B. But when they keep throwing harder and harder, meaning when they add their
20:16personnel, they beef up three tight ends, an extra offense line, whatever, their success
20:20rate goes up with that.
20:21That can't be sustainable.
20:23The whole operation, frankly, does not feel particularly sustainable.
20:26Just like you can't have a one pitch pitcher in the major leagues, right?
20:29You need something to offset.
20:31And so to me, if you can't shore up the pass protection and shorter, which I just don't
20:35think is going to happen.
20:36You don't have the personnel.
20:37You're playing Thursday night.
20:38It's not there.
20:39You need to alter the play calling.
20:41And so as much as Jacoby Percet savvy, which wasn't even avoiding the pass rush and sacks,
20:49it was hurting to the line, then snapping the ball, and then finding Jalen Polk in a
20:54window after moving the safety away with his eyes, that'll be there.
20:59But you need to find a Mario Douglas.
21:01This is where I'll hammer down on the receivers.
21:03He is your best option against man coverage.
21:05He's your best option over the middle of the field.
21:07He's your best option after the catch.
21:09Get him the ball.
21:11It's inexcusable that they have not.
21:13So screens, pick route combinations, any of your going to concepts, and Van Pelt did try
21:19to get him downfield in a couple of wheel routes that involve switch releases, which
21:22I think were to kind of confuse Seattle's match coverage rules, where it gets a little
21:25trickier when the receivers crisscross right at the line of scrimmage, who's number one,
21:31who's number two, who am I following?
21:33But those plays took too long.
21:34So just like you get scheme touches for Stevenson and Gibson and Hunter Henry on the tight end
21:39screen for 35 yards, get the ball to DeMario Douglas, and specifically in more quick game,
21:45because there's been a lot of running.
21:46It's been a lot of deep play action shots and some intermediate game, but not a lot
21:49of three-step, boom, get the ball out.
21:51They need to do that.
21:54We talk a lot about the offensive line, but not specifically, to run down their stats.
21:58Darian Lowe, four pressures allowed again.
21:59He's hurt by not even play against the Jets.
22:02Michael Jordan, only one pressure, it was a sack, but pretty good for a guy who got
22:06a full-time promotion today.
22:08David Andrews, clean slate, slate, sheet or slate, pick one, Callahan.
22:13He didn't have a clean slate.
22:15But next to him, Leighton Robinson had a dirty slate, four pressures allowed for him, and
22:20he's a rookie.
22:21He's a fourth-round rookie who's better run-blocking than his pass-protecting that's going to happen.
22:25The one player, though, that everyone's been highlighting since, as far as I could see
22:28on Pat's Twitter today, is Michael Nguyen.
22:31And Michael Nguyen has paid a lot of money.
22:32He's got to play better than this.
22:34I didn't think he played as bad as some folks did, and we're going to get to this in a mailbag,
22:38but I did have him down for three pressures.
22:40Can't have it.
22:41The one thing he did do very well, indisputably, was run-block.
22:44Patriots averaged 6.4 yard per carry, running behind Mike Nguyen, their best offensive lineman,
22:50including a couple of times on weak-side runs, which I tweeted this out in real-time in the
22:54That's going to be their pet play, right?
22:57Everyone load up on the opposite side of the line of scrimmage.
22:59Go over left.
23:00Defense has to honor that with numbers.
23:02We're just going to go behind our best guy, who, if he controls the edge, we're off to
23:06the races.
23:07Stats monitor, Patriots, again, have been blitzed six times in two games, and that's
23:12it.
23:13One of the highest-pressed races in the whole league.
23:15But from the look-how-far-they've-come department, Patriots have played back-to-back games without
23:19a turnover for the first time since December 1st, 2022.
23:24So progress, I guess.
23:26Okay, time to talk some defense.
23:28But before we do that, if you have any interest in going to the Bats-Jets game Thursday night,
23:34or you want to go to any other NFL game, or you want to go to a comedy show, or you want
23:37to go to the theater, or you want to watch basketball or hockey or whatever else is coming
23:42up in your life, I would fully advise you, as I advised my uncle this week and cousins
23:46in New York, I'm going to see for this game, go to game time.
23:49Because you get 110% of the difference from that if you find a lower-priced ticket elsewhere.
23:57Because game time has a lowest-price guarantee.
24:00Not only that, they've got game time picks, which filters out all the fluff and only gives
24:04you incredible deals on great seats to all of these events that you don't have to waste
24:08time searching for all those tickets.
24:09Just go to game time.
24:11Lowest-price guarantee, seat view, all-in pricing, everything.
24:14The things that you want, I want when I'm going to Fenway, look at the seat, see what
24:18it looks like.
24:20If you like it, great.
24:21If not, pick another seat view.
24:22It's all right there at game time.
24:23Download the game time app today, create an account, and here it is, the best part, $20.
24:28Just use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.
24:31It's like you did laundry today and found the $20 bill in your pocket.
24:33Here it is.
24:34Terms do apply.
24:35Just create an account, redeem code CLNS for $20 off.
24:39Download game time today.
24:40What time is it?
24:41Game time.
24:42All right.
24:43Defense.
24:44All right.
24:45So I talked about Alex Van Pelt, a little bland with the offense of game planning, a
24:49little conservative, a little safe.
24:51Demarcus Covington is not getting the same sort of criticism from me.
24:56He was a little all over the place.
24:59And you generally like the guy who comes out and says, oh, you spin the dial, Mike McDonald.
25:04Yeah, we do too.
25:07Here's a cover three creeper.
25:09Here's a simulated pressure.
25:10There's a zone blitz, and it's all in the first drive.
25:13Here was the problem.
25:15The Seahawks knew the Patriots were going to get back to inevitably.
25:19They're all out max pressures, but you're not always just like man to man.
25:23Everyone else rushed.
25:24Sometimes it's like you saw in the DK Metcalf touchdown.
25:26Let's hang back at the line again.
25:28I, the quarterback, look for this short throw.
25:31It's a hybrid man zone kind of concept.
25:34And the Seahawks knew it was coming.
25:36And against the blitz, I'll say this again, Gino Smith was 10 of 12 for 171 yards, a touchdown,
25:42one sack and a scramble or Seat.
25:45There was an incompletion and we'll get to the Bill Belichick design blocking scheme
25:49that bailed the Seahawks out on that Metcalf touchdown to play in the fourth quarter.
25:55But the Patriots blitz rate of 27% was much lower.
25:58This was not the plan going in.
25:59The Seahawks just knew in critical moments, they're going to get back to it.
26:01And they were ready.
26:02And as you can, you just heard, got punished.
26:05The Seahawks had a 69%, a very nice 69% success rate against the blitz.
26:11The Patriots allowed 13.2 yards per play allowed when they rushed five or more.
26:16So why do I say they waited them out?
26:18Well, Marcus Covington runs all that stuff in the opening drive.
26:21They want to get creative.
26:22They want to run soft zone behind it.
26:24The Patriots only ran man to man coverage 30% of the time.
26:27And Christian Gonzalez was shadowing DK Metcalf, but it wasn't, it wasn't in a way that, you
26:32know, DK felt him.
26:33It was more like Christian is my parole officer.
26:36Like I'm very mindful of him, but if I want to do something and he's not around, I could
26:40probably get away with it.
26:41But he's not around a whole lot.
26:43So this was not someone locking him down.
26:45Obviously the stats showed you that.
26:48But when the Patriots did try to press the issue, this is where I say Demarcus Covington
26:53did a little bit too much third and seven, okay, 48 yard line.
26:57The Patriots have a couple of plays left in the half.
27:00Seattle's got the ball.
27:01Seattle's not in field goal range.
27:03Instead of saying, Hey, we'll keep everything in front.
27:06As long as you don't get 10 yards, a, you don't get a first down B or nine field goal
27:09range.
27:10We're fine.
27:11He dials up the zone blitz.
27:12It leaves the middle open.
27:13Noah fan gets 14 yards.
27:15First down field goal range.
27:16Seahawks get three points before the hat.
27:18Then you have another third and seven after halftime.
27:22Okay.
27:23This was a big giant zone blitz again.
27:27That's in Keon white and Joshua Uche flying backwards, 20 yards downfield where Gino Smith
27:32delivers a 24 yard dime for a completion.
27:35Another first down.
27:36They didn't score at the end of that drive.
27:37It wasn't a backbreaking play, but you get the point of the Patriots trying to press
27:41a little bit too much.
27:42Like, here's what we're doing to get pressure on you.
27:45We're going to set the terms.
27:47We're going to spin the dials.
27:48Well, it's different stuff.
27:49Gino Smith.
27:50Didn't care.
27:51He said, I'll throw to my guys.
27:52I know where this is going to come from and you can do all this extra stuff, but it's
27:55not going to lead to anything because we've got the horses you knew don't.
27:59And whether the Patriots chose not to play man coverage, cause they agreed with him or
28:02they just thought this zone approach was a better plan.
28:04It didn't work.
28:05And by the time they did get around to playing man or the all out blitz, here's how that
28:10blocking scheme worked.
28:12All out blitz pressure.
28:14The essence of it is, Hey, we've got 11 guys in defense.
28:17You have 10 on offense around your quarterback when he snaps the ball and holds it.
28:22We can cover all of your receivers one-on-one, even if there's five, then we have six players
28:27left over to rush at you.
28:30And because you have five receivers and a quarterback that leaves five offensive linemen
28:34to block six rushers.
28:36We're going to get a plus one.
28:37Well, what the Seahawks did is the same thing that Bill Belichick did according to Dominique
28:41Foxworth, ESPN, where the Pat's lost divisional round game, their three-peat bid in January
28:472006.
28:48So that's for the 05 season.
28:49Denver had a huge cover zero all out blitz package.
28:52So the Patriots entering that game said, okay, this is what we're going to do.
28:55We're going to have a receiver declare, go outside the formation, right?
28:58I'm going to be a receiver here, which told Denver how many players we're going to be
29:02blocking and how many players they needed the blitz except at the snap.
29:07The receiver went in motion and then blocked an edge defender who was intentionally left
29:13alone by the offensive line.
29:15So what this did was the receiver who's covered by someone on the defense, right?
29:21Goes and blocks to give a plus one upfront while his defender is no longer blitzing or
29:28covering anyone because he's covering someone who's blocking.
29:30He's in no man's land.
29:32That's evened up the 10 versus 11 with that defender in no man's land.
29:35It's really 10 on 10, which means you can block all of the blitzers so long as this
29:39guy does not rush, though he usually does after a second or two, and then find a receiver
29:44one-on-one who doesn't necessarily have to be within five to 10 yards of line scrimmage.
29:48You can go deep, have longer developing routes.
29:50The Patriots didn't win that game as we know, but the Steelers use that same scheme, that
29:55design of the receiver going and motioning, serving as a blocker, stalling his defender
30:01and coverage for a moment or two to erase that numbers advantage.
30:04Even if he did add to the rush, it's a second or two late, Brady or then Ben Roethlisberger
30:08had the time to develop and attack downfield, and he did.
30:11Well, Gino Smith did the same thing.
30:13This was on the Metcalf touchdown, which was a breakdown in coverage, but this was a wrinkle.
30:18I remember watching the film here today and said, this is too good.
30:22The point is Seattle had answers for the blitz.
30:25That was second and five at midfield, but they knew based on the Patriots' certain looks
30:29when they were going to go to this max pressure or all out pressure, which again, they did
30:33in overtime for their last two first down plays.
30:37The first one was a third and six, third and seven, Zach Charbonneau going into the flat
30:42opposite this max pressure, Gino Smith backs away, flips it to him, he runs for a first
30:46down.
30:47The other one was a moving pocket throw.
30:48The Patriots, again, all out blitz and some of the situation, like you just have to go
30:52force the issue.
30:53They already punted to start overtime, a field goal could beat you.
30:55You need to get them out of field goal range, but the Seahawks knew it was coming and they
30:58knew it in between both the Metcalf touchdown in the first quarter and those plays in overtime.
31:04Because again, 10 of 12, 171 and a touchdown, one sack, Gino Smith was freaking brilliant
31:09and the Patriots could never press them off, get them off schedule.
31:13That's what happened here when you're dropping Keon White and Joshua Uche into coverage and
31:17saying Marcus Jones and nickel blitz, bunch of different times they couldn't do it.
31:21Okay.
31:22And they ran out of options and that's how it looked.
31:24I mentioned Gonzalez.
31:25He gave up four catches.
31:26The Metcalf didn't see him a ton of man to man.
31:30It's just, this is why I wanted to wait.
31:32When I see a fifth game before I call him an all pro number one corner potentials in
31:36there, don't get me wrong, but this is not a game that he's pointing to me like I shut
31:40down DK Metcalf.
31:41No, you didn't.
31:42You didn't even get the chance to do that.
31:43Speaking of man to man, Gino Smith was eight of 12 for 101 yards and a sack plus two drops,
31:48which are brutal numbers for a defense that prides itself in playing one-on-one up front
31:52one-on-one Keon White had four pressures.
31:55He was the only guy on the defensive line to have more than one break on McMillan at
31:59two hurries.
32:00They were both on blitzes.
32:01I want to talk a lot more about him with Juwan Bentley, who I think is a major blow.
32:05He's getting the play calls in from the sideline.
32:06He's making the checks.
32:07He's the first one into the hole experienced guy.
32:10I'm watching their first couple of run plays and plays a run defense and he just triggers
32:14so fast.
32:15Like what is, what is he seeing that I'm not, which is not to say that I see everything
32:20that Juwan Bentley does.
32:21It's just to go like, if he's wrong, he's really wrong.
32:25He didn't care.
32:27But up front again is the issue.
32:29The Patriots don't have to reach into their big bag of pressure tricks.
32:33If Keon White and Richard Wise and Joshua Uche are getting pressure, they could just
32:36rush forward.
32:37They tried to, and it didn't work again, just a 27% blitz rate, which is really closer to
32:4120 before halftime, but they couldn't do it.
32:45Down the middle of the defense.
32:46This is, this is going to be a real test for them moving forward.
32:48Devon Gacho and Daniel Akwale, a defense tackle combined to play almost a hundred snaps.
32:53It's a lot.
32:54The rest of them to play all three downs, guys that are not used to that.
32:57Devon Gacho has been a starter for multiple years.
32:59In the middle of July, he survives at 99%.
33:01It's probably going to go to a hundred now with Bentley out.
33:03Duggar and Peppers are at a hundred percent and outside it's time to benchmark Wilsonman.
33:10Like he, he was in a rotation with Jonathan Jones.
33:13You notice it because he again had a defensive pass interference penalty and gave up a 16
33:17yard catch.
33:18I think it's Alex Austin time.
33:19This is really in the weeds.
33:20Now speaking of Jonathan Jones, no, it was not defensive pass interference.
33:24That sucks.
33:25Calls go against you.
33:27But it is a loser mentality.
33:28Okay.
33:29When, Oh, the ref took the game from us.
33:32No, no, no, no.
33:33You could have stopped them after the fact.
33:35You could have made stops earlier in the game, not to even be there in the first place.
33:39This was not a good defensive game for the Patriots.
33:41Geno Smith had almost a career day with his 327 passing yards, which would have been more.
33:48Okay.
33:49We're not for a couple of good tackles, which you didn't see from Marcus Jones could see
33:52Miss three.
33:53So that's about it for defense.
33:55It's the offensive teams.
33:56Austin Hooper blew it on the overload that led to the black field goal that forced the
34:00Patriots to, you know, defend a field where Seattle only needed a field goal, not a touchdown
34:06at the very end, obviously forced it to overtime.
34:08But who is the player?
34:10Who is the group?
34:11As we pivot now to, we need to talk in light of game balls.
34:14It's the offensive line.
34:15That's just, that's just what it is.
34:17It's it's untenable.
34:19You can't have pressure rates of 44, 45%.
34:21You can't have your quarterback saving your ass time and again, escaping all this pressure,
34:27not getting sacked.
34:28And if the best thing he do save a bad situation, cause it's just not going to be sustainable.
34:33There needs to be a fix here and it can't be Caden Wallace for the rest of the season
34:36left tackle.
34:37You need to make some sort of Godfather offer or find someone on the street.
34:40I don't even know who's on the street anymore.
34:42We always talk about David Bakhtiar.
34:43Do you think anyone wants to jump into this team fresh off the street just yet?
34:48I don't know.
34:49But here's the thing.
34:50This is why, uh, I and plenty of other media members were like, you need, you need a tackle.
34:57You need somebody else.
34:58They don't.
34:59What would NFL film say?
35:00Then we'll get to the mailbag.
35:01We'll get you out of here.
35:02Okay.
35:03So it starts, uh, in this fictitious documentary with Patriots 2024 season, every game you're
35:08watching at the end of the year, what does this game look like?
35:11I say they start at the top of the lighthouse.
35:13Cause who's up there as the keeper, absorber, watcher, whatever of the light lighter of
35:18the light Malcolm Butler, right?
35:20This was a plus organizational trolley.
35:24He's ringing in the bell, 2014 Superbowl team comes out at halftime on a duck boat.
35:29Um, vibes are high.
35:31Things are good.
35:32Patriots get an early lead.
35:33Then of course you got to show the Metcalf touchdown back and forth.
35:35We go 1713 Seattle at the half.
35:39Then it goes straight to the fourth quarter cause we didn't have any points.
35:41Romandre Stevenson, boom, touchdown, find the jumbo package, Gillette roars.
35:47We even get a reference to drive Mayo on WEI saying, Hey, we're going to run the ball.
35:51You got to stop it.
35:52Looks great.
35:53Here comes Tonio Gibson.
35:54Boom.
35:5545 yard run down the sideline, a field goal attempt, but wait, Oh, it's blocked.
36:00Oh.
36:01And Seattle's going to, Oh, they're kicking their own field.
36:03Oh.
36:04They tied the game.
36:05Okay.
36:06Overtime.
36:07Well, you can still win this.
36:08No, we got stopped again.
36:09And then Seattle goes down penalty flag.
36:10Oh no.
36:11They kick a field goal.
36:12Everything's quiet.
36:13Well, you can't win them all.
36:14They're going to the jets because they always spend a little bit more time in the divisional
36:18games.
36:19That to me is what NFL films would say.
36:20Okay.
36:21We got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, uh, questions in the mailbag and start with John, John Zanis,
36:27president of the, uh, company that, that, that produces, that does everything with this
36:31podcast except for what I'm doing right now, jumps in.
36:35Cause he's a good teammate and says, if sitting Drake may, John also just might believe this
36:39and it might not being a teammate, you might just be a frustrated fan like you, John says,
36:43if sitting Drake may before he's ready and under less than ideal circumstances is obviously
36:48the right thing to do is playing Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, and Bo Nix wrong.
36:53Uh, look, my first thing would be their degrees here, right?
36:57The Patriots offensive line sucks.
37:00Their offensive lines suck a little less, but their fans are probably saying the similar
37:04things about their past protection.
37:05Let's be clear again, draw the line, run blocking versus benefiting.
37:09There's a point at which within these degrees, you have to say, okay, this is where I would
37:13stop.
37:14To me, the Patriots are on the wrong side of that line where I would not start a rookie
37:18quarterback.
37:19I'm at the point I would consider Joe Milton before Drake may throwing him into this mess
37:23where again, 45% of the time you're off schedule.
37:26You're off platform.
37:27You're doing things you don't want to cause you just can't do your own job in the pocket
37:31and throw the football.
37:32That's where we're at right now.
37:33Kayla Williams at least has a receiving core.
37:37That was a bad offensive line.
37:38We certainly watched it.
37:39If you watch Sunday night football, but whether it's him or Jane Daniels, guys who played
37:42a lot more college football than Drake may, this is not an instance where all the situations
37:48are made differently.
37:49The organizational expectations are made differently.
37:51Their experience is not to say that Drake may won't be as good or isn't as good right
37:55now, but to me, your goals are to build him up to be the future of the franchise.
38:00If he goes in, he gets torn down and I don't care what the rest of the league or those
38:04situations look like.
38:05I think that's a fair way to look at it.
38:07Same way.
38:08If you were raising kids, I would say it might be in the same class, right?
38:12But you have different expectations based on their ability level or whatever else is
38:16going on in their lives that are not going on other kids.
38:18So at some point, the comparison is just not worth it.
38:20I don't even have kids.
38:23That should be, I think that made sense.
38:26Fiora, great question here.
38:28Will the amount of pressure that's getting to Perced eventually start to affect his game
38:31the way it did Mac Jones?
38:32Or does the fact that he's a veteran mean that he should be able to manage it without
38:36getting sped up like I was there?
38:39Slowing down now.
38:40How about that?
38:41Fiora, again, great question because I think about this like Mac Jones.
38:50Week one and week two survived a ton of pressure.
38:52Close games.
38:53Difference, obviously, the Patriots win the first one this year.
38:55Didn't win either of them last year.
38:57You go play the Jets.
38:58It's going to be a physical game, whoever it goes.
39:00And then there's an additive effect here with the pressure.
39:04Couple big differences, obviously.
39:05Perced, I think, is mentally tougher.
39:07I think he was when he entered the league.
39:09He's also more durable.
39:10He's a bigger dude who's taking a lot more hits.
39:12He's also someone that I think knew what he was stepping into.
39:16Whereas Mac Jones, very comfortable, liked what the offense was going.
39:19Then everything fell apart and he had a lot more pressure on him.
39:21We talked about expectations and just couldn't take it anymore.
39:25That's not going to happen to Perced as fast if it does as it did to Mac Jones.
39:28But that doesn't mean the Patriots shouldn't do everything in their power to fix this offensive
39:34line situation, which might not be a whole lot.
39:37We're in the thick of it now.
39:39The games have begun.
39:43Perced can manage this better, but there's no guarantee that he won't break because pressure
39:47breaks everything.
39:49It breaks everyone.
39:50And especially at the rate the Patriots are allowing it right now.
39:53Corey, quote, we're getting to the X's and O's.
39:57Is it too early to give May some RPO packages to sprinkle into games to give defenses a
40:01new look and get his feet wet, or is it better just to wait until he's actually the starter?
40:07The RPO shine, I think, is rightfully wore it off a lot the last couple of years because
40:12defenses in the NFL, same as they have in college, have found solutions.
40:15Some of it's man coverage.
40:16Sometimes it's the structure and alignment of the safeties, certain different keys, whatever.
40:22I don't think there's a real benefit, especially when the first letter of the RPO, as you know,
40:27is for run.
40:29Teams might just invite him to hand the ball off, depending on whatever the situation is.
40:34Or if he's throwing, it'll probably just be a slant because offensive lineman can't
40:37really go downfield.
40:38If he's holding on to the ball longer than he's at risk.
40:41There's no big benefit to an RPO package.
40:43You might as well just be saying, why not do a bootleg package?
40:46Eventually there's a little bit of a tip off here, right?
40:49So I think the 30% snaps in practice are legitimately valuable.
40:53I think that's the right way to handle it, build him up, give him experience against
40:56a good defense, right?
40:59And not have any kind of threat from physical harm or just building bad habits.
41:02And if he does have bad habits, you just, you fix it.
41:05It's practice is what it's for.
41:06But the idea of an RPO package, it's not, you know, like a wildcat package.
41:10If you had a running back to me would be more effective for this offense.
41:14And even that has maximum tell of, oh, there's a running back who's going to take the snap.
41:18I wonder what they're going to do, right?
41:21But there's no such upside because you can hit single wing off balance lines and make
41:27big gains running the football.
41:28But there's nothing really there with the RPO package.
41:31If you're going to run that, just run it with percent.
41:34Mike D, should the pads move Mike on one of the left tackle and insert walls at right
41:37tackle?
41:38No, but obviously a lot of changes should be on the table.
41:43The difference is Michael one who's never played left tackle on the teams actually shot
41:46this down internally from what I understand.
41:49So I'm not in a big proclamation way, but you know, they're not considering it because
41:53they've made up their minds.
41:54It's just, it's just not going to happen.
41:56So especially after this game where a lot, some folks are being like, oh, can you put
42:00him back to right tackle?
42:01Can you, you know, put someone else at right tackle, put them at back at right guard and
42:05put them at right tackle.
42:06He's never played there.
42:07He played left guard in 2021, then got benched and for the rest of the season, pretty much
42:14keep them at right guard or right tackle.
42:15I would keep them at right tackle.
42:17It took too long to get them there in the first place.
42:19You just got to write out these games and Kate Moss, I said weeks ago, should have been
42:22stuck at left tackle and develop their full stop.
42:24Hasn't happened.
42:25What are you going to do?
42:26Three more Lawrence?
42:27So does the West coast offense use the slot receiver more or less than other offenses?
42:31So I understand what you're going for here.
42:36Grouping the Patriots offense in with the West coast offense.
42:38What I would say is that when we talk about a West coast offense, it's really not the
42:41whole system.
42:43It's just the passing game, meaning you're using certain concepts.
42:47You're using certain timing, the way that you teach it.
42:50The quarterback's feet are tied with his eyes and that, okay, by the time you get to three
42:53steps or looking here, when you get to five steps, that means the receivers at a certain
42:57point downfield, those basic principles and then schemes are West coast.
43:02The run game could be anything else you could pair, you know, for example, uh, the Rams
43:08are an 11 personnel team.
43:10They will never, ever, ever have a fullback with Sean McVay.
43:13You would still call that a West coast pass offense.
43:16The Niners Kyle Shanahan are always going to have a fullback, but the run game looks
43:21very different.
43:22That's a two back running game, but still some West coast principles in the passing
43:25game.
43:27It's a coaching tree and then split off into their own branches, which is to say the personnel
43:31decisions are really more predicated on what's available to you and then your own coaching
43:36preference.
43:37Cause again, you just gave me two different examples of West coast offense, quote unquote,
43:40which really, again, only refers to a passing game that do very different things on the
43:44ground and then by extension with the personnel.
43:47So I think this is a personal preference of van Pelt and in Cleveland, they use a lot
43:51of two tight ends.
43:52Uh, it's a bigger offense.
43:54So it's not that they don't use the slot receiver a whole lot.
43:58It's also that receiving group, again, it's 31% success rate and they went to three receivers.
44:02Not good enough.
44:03It's bad.
44:04It's very, very bad.
44:05Uh, it should be better.
44:06There are ways that it could be better, but it's not because he's a West coast guy that
44:10they just don't like slot receivers.
44:11It's just how their team's constructed right now and how he's chosen to run the offense.
44:15Sox nation.
44:16Would this offense be a little better if Jacobi was able to decide where he starts his progression
44:20specifically?
44:21Because the progression is pre-planned instead of finding the best matchup, uh, pre-snap.
44:25So it is not lost on Jacobi preset.
44:29If I'm Jalen Polks across from no one, I would say, or tomorrow, Douglas is on a linebacker.
44:34He can make an audible, he can make a check.
44:36He could go from a run to a pass or pass to run, whatever it is, but the, the read progressions
44:42are a one, two, three within this system.
44:46It is not like we used to see in the old New England system.
44:48Um, you know, a man coverage concept on one side and the zone one on the other.
44:53Right.
44:54And those, that was the air heart Parkers.
44:55You get two different concepts.
44:56That was the play call merged together.
44:58This is very much 15, 16 words, and it's all going to be layered and tied together and
45:03make sense.
45:04And you can go one, two, three.
45:05Now he can skip a read.
45:07If for example, there's a blitz and he goes, okay, my first reads a post.
45:11I'm not even going to get enough time to throw that or look at it.
45:14Let me skip to three.
45:16So there is a, I would say room for improv, but like human application here, right?
45:22Like you're not always abiding by the rules when you're driving or doing whatever your
45:25job is.
45:26Sometimes you're doing the thing that makes the most sense in that situation.
45:30And he's doing the same thing, but this system works when it doesn't work.
45:33It won't be because he went one to two to three and should have just gone to three.
45:37You need to make that progression for a reason.
45:39They spent a lot of time designing this and that's just how they do things.
45:42Even if it's different from the last offense and the offense before that, before that,
45:45before that, getting out on this, Jordan, the key plays that cost the past yesterday
45:49with a 56 yard touchdown to DK Metcalf, the sack on third and six in the block field goal.
45:54Do you blame the play call slash decision or execution on each?
45:58I love and hate the word execution when it comes to, well, specifically in answers from
46:04players and coaches who I, I get why they're saying that they believe it.
46:09It's also to say, okay, Callahan, why wasn't your podcast so good?
46:13Well, I just didn't speak well enough.
46:14Yeah, duh.
46:16Like the whole, all of life is execution.
46:19Now there is a line to be drawn between let's call it the play call.
46:24As you just said, the play call or the execution, the play call by Kyle Duggar,
46:27who checked to that blitz, which let's be clear, whether the coaches did or the players did,
46:32Seattle knew it was coming because that's what the Patriots are about.
46:34The Patriots players and coaches, it was a bad play call and it was even worse execution.
46:39So it was second and five.
46:42Those sit on the fence, all out black, all out blitz, max coverage plays to me should
46:49be from better depth, right?
46:51Third and eight are longer.
46:52So I can really wait and read what the receivers are doing.
46:55And if he's just going upfield as Metcalf did, I've got time to get going and run with
47:00him.
47:01So to me, it was both the third and six sack execution.
47:05You got to throw the ball.
47:06I think you do.
47:07And Leighton Robinson got beat.
47:09Like on when he got beat, it was not pretty.
47:11They got beat a lot.
47:12We've talked about it.
47:13The block field goal.
47:14That was execution.
47:15Again, I think if you're Austin Hooper, you got to commit to one guy, right?
47:19Like you can't let both of them go by.
47:22And Julian Love was the inside guy.
47:24He's the one who got the block.
47:25And if Austin Hooper had committed to Julian Love, it's not to say that I remember the
47:29Seahawk who came up to the edge next to him wouldn't have gotten there too.
47:33But it's a similar principle with blitzing.
47:36It's usually an inside out read, right?
47:38Because the guy who's blitzing straight ahead in the A or B gap is going to get your quarterback
47:43faster if you're running back in blitz pickup than the guy coming off the edge.
47:48So at least count on that extra time and space to do you a favor and take the inside guy.
47:53He didn't take either.
47:55I don't know the specifics of field goal blocks to assess and talk about how to handle an
48:01overload.
48:02But it's pretty evident when most of the guys are on that side, what they're going to try
48:07to do.
48:08And then they did it.
48:09So that's it.
48:10All right.
48:11We have gone long.
48:12Thank you for hanging out.
48:13Patriots are playing Thursday night.
48:14Before that, we will have a new episode.
48:15Wednesday night, I think at the very latest, James White coming to hang out because he
48:18wouldn't have Cincinnati.
48:19We would have had him.
48:20But that man was celebrating his win as a member of the Northern Illinois coaching staff
48:24over Notre Dame.
48:25Sorry for all the Notre Dame golden domers out there.
48:27But it happened.
48:28And James White's very happy.
48:29And that makes me happy.
48:30So we'll be back.
48:31Pat's just preview.
48:32I will say this, and I'll remind you in the next episode, that will be it.
48:37No episode Friday.
48:38Nothing over the weekend.
48:39We will be back Monday or Tuesday after that.
48:41But until then, thank you again.
48:44And Wednesday night, James White coming to you from Pat's Jets.
