00:00This was a this was a Belichick Ian schemed
00:03Kind of win will win, you know, the Patriots were always under Belichick
00:08We'll win as long as we do these things we can win this game and they did it
00:14we talked about it myself and Taylor on Thursday's live Patriots daily where we kind of did a
00:20what the how the Patriots can win this game right because in the prep the I
00:24guess the the idea behind it was any given Sunday a team can beat another team and
00:29Like you mentioned you have to do X Y & Z in order to get it done
00:32And it was basically run the hell out of the football control the line of scrimmage
00:36Stop the Bengals big three which they were able to because T Higgins was obviously out of the game
00:41Then Jamar chase was limited with the contract stuff
00:44And they got it done and they played smart football on offense. They didn't turn the ball over
00:49They just pounded the rock with Armand Rey and for the most part Jacoby Brissett made the right place and you know
00:55Well, I'm sure we'll talk about all of it more in depth
00:57But there was the plate there was the throw to Hunter Henry that got broken up
01:00That was a lucky one and that could have changed things because they wouldn't have gotten points down there in the red zone
01:05But it didn't it wasn't intercepted and that's what we have to work off of and so it was a gutsy win
01:11It was a statement win. I think let's talk about the guy who runs the program Gerard Mayo
01:17Debut as a head coach
01:19your thoughts on what you saw from him as a coach and
01:22Also the locker room in the buy-in level and what the guys had to say about
01:28Yeah, so
01:30You know a couple things I
01:33Just in general. I didn't know what to expect out of these Patriots new head coach new offensive coordinator new defensive coordinator new special teams coordinator
01:42You know what I did know of what I saw on the field I thought that
01:48Gerard made a really ran a really good camp that would have the Patriots physically prepared for this game
01:54I think that obviously showed up and might have been the reason for their victory in this game over
02:00You know a Bengals team, which now let's just call it
02:04They're a little soft and Jamar Chase has barely practiced and D Higgins was out and all that stuff
02:10So I definitely was confident that the Patriots would be physically prepared. I figured they would tackle well
02:17You know who knows how they would block
02:21Whether they would hold up in the running game
02:23But you know
02:23I thought they'd be
02:24physically ready and probably ready to go the distance more than the Bengals which I think played out the new era as
02:30We've talked about in New England is
02:33Really finally here which Rod Mayo did Sunday is achieved two things that Bill Belichick did not could not
02:40over the last four years without Tom Brady
02:42Win as a two-score underdog and win a statement game on the road Gerard did this in his NFL?
02:49coaching debut
02:51Now this is not about Belichick
02:52But if you are someone in that locker room listening to Mayo about this is how we're gonna win
02:56This is going to be the plan. It's going to work
02:58We're building but eventually over time this will work and boom like that. It happens right away. You were bought in. That's it
03:05You went on the road as the biggest underdog in week one something
03:08They themselves talked about in the locker room afterward and one big-time Mayo had the locker room before he's got it in his palm right now
03:15Which is the best thing you can have as a rookie head coach not to mention everything else
03:20It lies ahead, which is probably still a difficult season. This makes it that much easier because he's got proof of concept
03:26He's got buy-in. He's got something again. Bill Belichick could not do the last four years five times
03:31He was an underdog by eight and a half points or more
03:34Owen five the beginning of the Gerard Mayo era
03:37What would it looked like on the field from a coaching point of view and I would say that the coaching staff?
03:42passed their first test now some of the stuff I'm gonna say is a low bar to clear but
03:47After one penalty on the opening kickoff, which you like roll your eyes, you're like, oh boy. Here we go again
03:52really clean operation
03:54They guys got in and out of huddle. They got the play calls in you didn't seem to have too many procedural issues anything
04:00At least nothing that stuck out that you could see from the exterior
04:03I'm sure they have things they want to clean up here there, but it's not even at times this summer
04:08We saw they couldn't get lined up. They couldn't get substitutions done
04:11you know a ton of penalties and joint practices and preseason games, but if
04:16It felt like the whole operation itself went smoothly and I don't know
04:21Maybe I'm I'm not giving them enough credit or I wasn't giving them enough credit going in but Taylor
04:26I feel like they definitely checked that box and that was encouraging for me to see
04:31Yeah
04:31the biggest thing that I wanted to see from them was that discipline and playing clean football and I emphasize that
04:36Like we know there's gonna be issues. We didn't think the offense was gonna be even close to perfect
04:41I think we expected the defense to be good
04:43The special teams who were hoping would be decent and they ended up making an impact play, which was awesome
04:48Jeremy Springer era starting off on a great foot
04:51But I mentioned like the penalties especially for the offense like there were definitely some penalties that could get cleared up
04:56But the offense had the very low false start which honestly I didn't give him a lot of crap for because he came off the bench
05:02The crowd was roaring by the time he got in there
05:04So I was like, you know what as long as it's mid-drive too, wasn't it? Right? It was yeah
05:09That's the worst mistake like you take that
05:12Exactly, then David Andrews a legal man downfield where he kind of joked about it
05:15I think he was kind of like I didn't even realize I was downfield and then there was one more
05:20remember the third offensive penalty, um
05:24Sorry, I can't remember but if anyone remembers let me know but the fact you can't remember is kind of the point it wasn't
05:29That's actual cuz that shoot those two penalties. I don't think I'll forget those for the rest of my life
05:35Anybody will let me forget them for the rest of my life every time he does anything I get tweets about it now
05:40Yeah, so that was a little bit more under control I thought the turnovers now obviously they got lucky
05:45Ramon Jerry Stephenson fumbled almost had a crippling sense of deja vu from that a Jacoby Bursett making
05:51You know a not wise decision to try to chuck it up to hunter Henry off his back
05:55But things you got to clean up for sure, and I'm sure we'll get into Jacoby Bursett
05:58But I think this was a great way to start off
06:01Obviously they won plenty to clean up once again
06:04But I really liked what I saw from them for the most part especially from a discipline and clean football perspective
06:09The Patriots go in there, and they win the football game and look
06:13It was eerily reminiscent of a Bill Belichick coach team even though Bill is no longer here
06:19And I'm not talking about the most recent version of Bill Belichick
06:22We saw because they were a hot mess those last few years, and that's why he in part is no longer here it was
06:29Fundamentally sound do not beat yourself again
06:32They used to say it all the time Belichick you teach him how not to lose before you worry about how to win
06:37They did that yesterday. They didn't turn the ball over they did turn over the Bengals the Bengals gave them some gifts
06:43But it was just it was one of those games where I was like man for the first time in at least a couple
06:48Years, I felt like I watched a competently coached
06:52Well organized football team
06:54And I don't know if this is something that continues to carry on or if they found the right opponent in the right week
07:01With the Bengals, but will it was encouraging it was interesting to sort of contrast
07:05How the game went and why it was great, but then you can you know to get that first win under Mayo
07:10But you can also see like
07:12This is not a sustainable way to play offense. You know the way they did yeah the one thing
07:17I think I hit on like 900 times on Friday's pod was who's drive Mayo
07:21And what kind of coach team is this gonna be and yep?
07:23I think that the two biggest things for the Patriots again this season we talked so much about this in our season preview
07:28Who's the coach?
07:29What are the young players looks like obviously if there's foundational pieces Gonzalez was good
07:33The poke had some nice moment like you know Ramon Dre is a guy they extended and it was awesome
07:38He's always gonna be all he's a bruising back
07:40We'll see kind of obviously how he ages
07:42But you know those guys those core group and then who's the coach and then obviously who's Drake man the Patriots you know look
07:48They have a Seattle team coming cross country
07:49You know next week one o'clock game and Seattle have had some issues
07:53I know they won the game on Sunday, but Denver should have been up big time early and one o'clock
07:58You know East Coast travel coming off that emotion emotional kind of home win
08:02Oh, it's the Patriots. It's one week. I don't know
08:04I don't know why you don't think the Patriots couldn't
08:07You couldn't flirt with the idea of being to you know
08:09I don't know that they will but I think you can flirt with it
08:11So I think they were the one of the most impressive teams yesterday knowing
08:15There was a lot of questions about Gerard Mayo, and it's just one game
08:18But I think if you're a Patriots fan you say you know what we're gonna go in every game
08:22And we're gonna be damn hard to beat and I think that's the goal for this season
08:25So keep saying this stuff about Mayo now definitely means that that kind of belief level is super high
08:30In in terms of and the buy-in is really high from those guys there. I think that's evident
08:35I think you're gonna see it in almost every comment that comes out of there
08:38Yeah, and I think it's I mean everybody all the players saying that you know
08:43We love Gerard and he's our guy and you see the Gatorade bath that we talked about and Keon mentioned it
08:49But talking about going on Devon God draws podcast and they're gonna run through a brick wall for that guy
08:53So when Mayo speaks these guys are gonna listen, right?
08:57and so it felt like the you know, the
09:01The Patriot way for lack of a better term that draw or that Bill Belichick was preaching here for so long
09:06It just kind of felt like it run its course last year
09:08And you know, there was mistakes all over special teams and there was the internet
09:13Max Jones and stuff like that and it's like
09:17Now they listen to Gerard Mayo and they they want to win and they want to play hard for Gerard Mayo because he's been through
09:23It and he understands what they've been through like that
09:26you know they talk about Mayo mentioned that you know, the two-a-day stuff and how he was able to talk to
09:31Talk to Bill Belichick and they would not do two days because Mayo explained that this is what the players want things like that
09:37And so Mayo gets it from their perspective. So I think they want to play that much harder for him now
09:42You mentioned it too. There's rah-rah guys and there's got you know, I think of Brandon Staley from
09:48From the Chargers who early on looks pretty good. We're going forward on fourth down. I trust my guys
09:53These are my guys blah blah and it just takes it. It runs its course Jason Garrett. He was mr
09:58Mr
09:59Clap your hands and he he gave it his all to make sure that everybody knew that he thought the Dallas Cowboys were the best
10:04football team on
10:05The field but at the end of the day it ran its course there too
10:08And so look for now, they're 1-0. They want to play hard for Mayo. They shower room and Gatorade. They love them
10:14They they're on the same level as far as respect wise
10:17But at the end of the day, you need to keep winning football games in order for that to matter because otherwise
10:23Ultimately at the end of the you know, when if they do start to lose games, it's gonna look a whole lot different
10:28I don't know died. It's hard to describe it Nick, but there was definitely a different vibe like almost like a a
10:36Heaviness had been lifted
10:38And I do think that's a credit to Mayo and I think at least for one week. It was very real on Sunday. I
10:46Remember saying when people were looking at Belichick and Mayo and it was all you're gonna have another Belichick guy
10:51He's going to be just like Belichick and and I made a note at the time on
10:55My podcast and I think I made it on this podcast as well. And the point was
11:01Well, Mayo also understood what Belichick might not have gotten right and he's in the locker room and he's talking to these guys
11:09He had a great relationship with a lot of players on the team and I'm sure during those conversations
11:15Mayo picked up that some of them were frustrated
11:19Some of them had had enough of the Belichick method and it's not to say that Belichick can't work out next year if he comes
11:24Back to the league and it's not to say that Mayo has everything figured out as Greg just said it's been one week
11:29But it's the idea of you know, Mayo taking notes in learning. Okay. This is what works
11:35This is what I can bring to the table, which was you know, a lot of the principles football wise
11:41Mayo
11:43Stands, you know firm with Belichick, you know, really hip-to-hip shoulder-to-shoulder
11:47but he's watching this all play out in the locker room and he's like
11:50He's probably saying to himself. This isn't the way Bill like that. Just not not in
11:562023 this is like we can do a better job of reaching these players with all that said it wouldn't mean anything if we didn't
12:04See things play out the way they played out on Sunday, and I thought Mayo had a great day on Sunday
12:08I just thought Mayo had them ready to go like as a whole and that's credit to him
12:13We talked so much about in the summer how hard they really pushed them right lots of padded practices later in the day
12:20It was hotter live tackling. They only missed three tackles were Cincinnati miss
12:24I think it was like 1213. We heard Zack Taylor say a lot how bad that cost them the game
12:29So and on Ramon Dre alone, so yeah, so they were ready to go in that area. I thought they were well coached
12:36You know elsewhere helped Alex van Pelt was familiar going against Cincinnati seemed like they had a really good game plan
12:42They stuck to they executed we even heard, you know
12:45Mayo told us yesterday guys were going down the sideline
12:47But in the fourth quarter saying take him to the hill take him to the hill, right?
12:51They'd end every practice on the conditioning hill. So those guys were pumped up
12:54They were ready to go and it sounds small
12:57but those things really matter like in these early games where you could see
13:01Cincinnati was a team that didn't play their guys a lot in the preseason and they kind of looked like that
13:05And you know the Patriots they played their guys in the preseason
13:08They had those long training camp practices and they were ready to go and it makes a difference in a game like this
13:13This is what Mayo talked about
13:15Writing the ship it happened. Got 16 more to go and David Andrews is talking like yeah
13:20I think I think so
13:21What's his answer when I asked is this healing in any kind of way for a guy who not only was just at the literal?
13:25Center of all the dysfunction, but I'm going to talk to us at the media every single game last year as they go for in 13
13:31So I highlight them because they had to go through this log which made this all the sweeter, right all the bitterness the last two
13:37Years, but there's also something to be said for just the damn noise
13:40I heard waiting outside the locker room before I got in they do the whole
13:43Oh, yeah, right that you've heard and maybe even seen on social media since
13:49That was the loudest noise. I've heard out of a locker room and I don't know how long and when I got inside it was
13:55Maybe the happiest since 2018 which by now
13:59What are we like seven minutes in we thinking like did you
14:04Leave the stadium Callahan with a bag of cash to just kind of exaggerate all of this stuff
14:09No, this is this is what it felt like in the moment
14:11This was a moment that can stand on its own
14:13Even if they go 1 in 16
14:15You'll have this that you could hold on to it was both the start of something new in a moment unto itself because that's what
14:20They felt in there. And so there were good locker rooms. So get me wrong in 2021, especially that road win in Buffalo
14:25But this was it was like a weight lifted it was a joy rediscovered
14:30Validation it was okay
14:31We might be able to do this and who knows again how far they take it forward
