00:00The 21st and final stage of La Vuelta is an individual time trial around Madrid.
00:06Primoz Roglic has the red jersey and a two-minute lead in the overall standings,
00:10and this is one of his favourite disciplines, on paper at least.
00:16I always say I'm not a time trial specialist, but OK.
00:20I just have to give everything on the road, and that's it.
00:27It's a real GC day, so I just have to finish it off.
00:33With a fourth overall crown, Roglic will match the all-time record of Roberto Geras.
00:38Meanwhile, after nearly two weeks in red, Ben O'Connor is set to take his first Grand Tour podium
00:43before he leaves to Catalan AG2R for Jayco Alula next year.
00:48Thanks to all the boys these last 20 days.
00:54I love them to bits, and they always stepped up when they needed to, so I'm very happy.
01:01But I still have to do a good time trial tomorrow.
01:05This final effort isn't just about power, but also energy levels.
01:09How much has everybody got left in the tank after what's been a gruelling three-week race?
01:17The Stage 21 time trial course is 24.6km on flat roads, which should suit the specialists.
01:23We can expect average speeds of up to 55kmh as this Vuelta finishes with a bang.
01:36Listen to the noise.
01:37Well, this is Stage 21 of the Vuelta a España. Welcome along.
01:42The last time La Vuelta finished with a time trial was in 2021,
01:46when Roglic secured overall victory with the stage win, but there was a lot more climbing that day.
01:51And it quickly became apparent that the ruler would be fighting it up for glory in Madrid,
01:56as Eduardo Affini and Victor Campenaerts both set solid early times.
02:01It was also a good day for informed riders like Mauro Schmidt,
02:04who's been in four breakaways at this Vuelta and claimed two second places,
02:08the Swiss all-rounder going fastest in 27.14,
02:11though he was soon ejected from the hot seat by the day's surprise package,
02:15former under-23 world champion Filippo Baroncini.
02:21Today I woke up with really strong legs, really focused,
02:26wanted to try to go all in, empty the tank to try for the win.
02:35I have no regrets, I gave the maximum on the road.
02:39Unfortunately for Baroncini, Stefan Küng was on an absolute flyer,
02:44the Swiss champion blowing everybody out of the water in his bid to finally land a Grand Tour stage victory.
02:51And the Swiss champion, supersonic Stefan Küng, what's it going to be in the end?
02:56What's he got left and what's it going to be by the time the other riders come to the finish line?
03:02Küng though, 43 seconds better, that's enough for first right now.
03:07And could that be enough for a Grand Tour stage victory?
03:14The last rider from Switzerland to win a Grand Tour stage was Schmidt at the Giro in 2021
03:19and it would take something special to stop Küng from following in his footsteps.
03:24It was soon time for the GC riders to get going
03:27and while there were some narrow gaps within the top 10, it was hard to see anybody troubling Roglic.
03:34The red jersey Primoz Roglic is underway, the final rider to roll down the ramp.
03:40The real battle was between David Godou and Matthias Schjelmose for 5th place overall
03:45and it was going the way of the white jersey, also the Danish national champion.
03:49A resurgent Godou would have to settle for 6th place.
03:54Richard Carapaz and Enric Mas were unable to put any pressure on O'Connor, who finished as the runner-up.
03:59Roglic didn't round it out with victory this time, coming 2nd to King Küng, but he still conquered Spain.
04:07Rocket Roglic is going to win his 4th Vuelta a España of his career.
04:12What a performance, a new team, Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe, what a team it's been.
04:18Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe, what a team it's been.
04:21And Primoz Roglic, he's going to come across the line, he's a winner again at the Vuelta a España.
04:31Kung finally breaking his duck after a host of near misses
04:34and also landing his team's first Grand Tour win since the Giro 2022.
04:40I really wanted that win today and I knew with the parkour you had to go out hard
04:45and just keep it together until the end, that's what I did.
04:47I suffered a lot today but I think everyone at the end of this hard Vuelta
04:51and I'm just so happy that I got this win here at the Vuelta, my first Grand Tour stage win
04:58and it's been a long time in the making.
05:00Kung taking his 29th career win ahead of Roglic, Cattaneo, Baroncini and Schmidt.
05:05For Roglic, it's a first overall win since 2021.
05:10We all sacrificed, we all lived for it and I just feel happy actually that I can do it
05:18and I really appreciate the support that I can do it for the people.
05:26The Slovenian equaling the all-time record with a fourth victory,
05:30he finished 2 minutes 36 clear of O'Connor who held off Mass and Carapaz fairly comfortably in this final time trial.
05:39Caden Grove successfully defended the green jersey.
05:42Admittedly, he probably wouldn't have done so without Wout van Aert's abandon,
05:46but the Australian still won three stages like last year.
05:52Jay Vine won the polka dot jersey that slipped through his fingers in 2022
05:56ahead of his teammate Marc Soler and one of the revelations of this race,
06:00two-time stage winner Pablo Castrillo.
06:04Matias Schjelmose finished as the best young rider ahead of Florian Lippovitz
06:08and within the top five overall.
06:14Join us again in 2025 and, as ever, thanks for watching.
