00:00Welcome to La Vuelta a España 2024.
00:04This 79th edition gets underway in Lisbon,
00:07although not everybody has found it easy navigating their way around the Portuguese capital.
00:15Well, here's Dani Martínez. What's happened to Primoz?
00:18Well, we just came from the hotel, so I don't know.
00:21We're waiting for him too.
00:30And where were you when your colleagues were here?
00:34Not here, yeah. A bit later.
00:37Actually...
00:38You were lost?
00:39No, I was told that it's a date.
00:41And then, yes, I was still waiting at the hotel.
00:45I wanted to have the stage by myself.
00:48And really, yes, I definitely enjoyed this nice crowd today up here.
00:53So, really big thanks, guys.
00:56Roglic is far from the only GC contender,
00:59and with no Pogacar, Vingegaard or Evenepoel,
01:02this race is looking very open indeed.
01:05I'll do my best. The team is motivated.
01:07I think we have a really good team.
01:09Everybody is quite strong.
01:10So, I'm just looking forward to enjoy these days
01:13and, like, always do my best and give everything in the road.
01:18You never know how your body is going to respond.
01:21I'll just see how I'm feeling day by day
01:25and, hopefully, everything goes well.
01:30I'm pretty fresh.
01:31Yeah, definitely different, not doing a Grand Tour beforehand.
01:35More than anything, I'm just looking forward to being here.
01:39Already happy to be here, feeling good and, yeah.
01:49Just 12 kilometres on the menu today,
01:52a high-speed run down the coast between Lisbon and Oeiras.
01:55It's not very technical, but the win could be a factor
01:59as the TT and GC specialists battle it out for the first red jersey.
02:09It's all smiles on the start ramp ahead of this 12-kilometre individual time trial
02:13for Luis Angel Mate, the first rider to roll down the ramp
02:18and to officially get things underway here in La Vuelta a España 2024.
02:23At 40, Mate is the oldest rider in this race,
02:27enjoying his 12th and final Vuelta before retiring at the end of the year.
02:31His opening time of 14.04 would soon be beaten.
02:36Enric Mas was one of the first overall hopefuls to start.
02:39The Spaniard has come second at La Vuelta three times in 2018, 2021 and 2022
02:45and he is aiming high once again.
02:47The Movistar leader going top of the pile in 13 minutes and 14 seconds.
02:52But that time was soon blasted out of the water by Edoardo Affini.
02:56The Italian helped Wismar Lisa Baik win the opening team time trial two years ago,
03:00even wearing red for a day, and 12 minutes 43 would take some beating.
03:07It can always be a bit of a surprise, let's say, the first day of a Grand Tour.
03:13In terms of feeling, you know, you come from altitude, a bit of racing,
03:17but you still need to discover a little bit how the body is really doing,
03:22but I think overall I can be satisfied with my performance.
03:28Affini settling himself down for a long stint in the hot seat,
03:31with nobody really threatening his time as the wind began to pick up.
03:35The favourites getting ready to roll into action.
03:43Well, let's see what this man can do.
03:45The youngest rider in the race, Joshua Tarling,
03:48the European time trial champion of Ineos Grenadiers.
03:52Well, Tarling may be the youngest rider in the race,
03:54but the 20-year-old was tipped as one of today's hot favourites.
03:58The Welshman setting off just before Adam Yates,
04:01who is sharing the leadership at UAE with the home favourite, Joao Almeida.
04:07Tarling was three seconds up on Affini at the intermediate check,
04:11but would he still be leading at the finish line?
04:13This one was going right down to the wire.
04:18By two tenths of a second,
04:22Eduardo Affini has just held on.
04:28Well, Tarling just missing out, but as Affini said,
04:31the first day of a three-week race can throw up all sorts of surprises.
04:35The Italian was finally beaten by the Czech time trial champion,
04:39Matijas Vacek.
04:40Like Tarling, the 22-year-old making his Grand Tour debut,
04:44he went six seconds faster than Affini, averaging over 57 kilometres an hour.
04:53Most of the GC riders were on course by now,
04:56with Primoz Roglic among the last to go.
04:59It was a good day for the Slovenian.
05:01He ended up as the highest ranked of the favourites in eighth place.
05:0517 seconds ahead of Yates, 29 ahead of Carlos Rodriguez
05:09and 36 clear of the defending champion, Sepp Kuss.
05:14Only two riders could now deny Vacek a famous win,
05:17Brandon McNulty and Wout van Aert.
05:21It was an intense tussle between the last two riders out on the course.
05:25They were both within a second of Vacek at the intermediate split.
05:29It would all come down to the final sprint to the finish line.
05:35McNulty, the time is still green
05:38and the USA time trial champion, could he try and add a Grand Tour stage victory?
05:44He comes through.
05:45He takes two seconds to the good of Vacek.
05:50The time's still green, but where is the finish line?
05:53Is he going to get there or is he going to run out of space on the road
05:58by the closest of margins?
06:00It's McNulty who wins the stage.
06:02Wout van Aert takes third spot.
06:05McNulty was disappointed to miss out on a time trial medal
06:08at the recent Paris Olympics,
06:10but the Americans bounce back in some style here at La Vuelta.
06:14A brilliant effort to claim his 14th career win,
06:17it's the second at a Grand Tour after last year's Giro d'Italia.
06:22I really don't know if I expected to win.
06:24I knew if something crazy happened, I could.
06:26So I guess something crazy happened.
06:28I was hoping for something good today,
06:31but this is really hard to believe for me.
06:3312 minutes, there's not really much pacing.
06:35I just felt good and went as hard as I could.
06:38I knew the split I was good,
06:40so I just had to hold on and give everything I had.
06:42So that was just full from the start.
06:46McNulty winning just ahead of Vacek and van Aert,
06:49with Stefan Kung fourth quickest.
06:51Roglic and Almeida both finished inside the top ten.
06:54McNulty's already led several stage races this year,
06:57including the UAE Tour and Paris Nice.
06:59He'll be the first man in the red jersey tomorrow.
07:04He also leads the points classification,
07:06though he'll be lending that green jersey to van Aert on stage two.
07:12And Kung will be in polka dots
07:14as the race's first mountains points are dished out.
07:18Vacek leads the youth classification outright,
07:21so the Czech rider will be wearing white tomorrow.
07:24We're going to be heading north from Cascais to Ourém
07:27with a punchy final that could catch a few riders out.
07:30Do join us then, and thanks for watching.
