00:00After a sensational win yesterday for Pablo Castillo and Kern Farmer, it's time to focus
00:11on the GC battle.
00:13Ben O'Connor was able to contain his rivals yesterday, but there'll be no hiding on today's
00:17brutal final climb, the Puerto de Ancales.
00:23Today we know it's a tough finish, very steep.
00:25There's another three and a half thousand metres of climbing like yesterday.
00:29Every day it's been between three and four thousand, so it's hard, but we're going to
00:33hang in there and give it our all.
00:37Primoz Roglic will no doubt make a move today.
00:40Sepp Kuhr says it's strange to be competing against his old team-mate, but the defending
00:44champion is hoping to get the better of the Slovenian and everybody else on the final
00:49climb.
00:50It's different racing against him after being team-mates for so long, but that's how cycling
00:57is.
00:58We'll move on to different things and in the race, you know, we're competitors, but it's
01:04always friendly.
01:05A climb like this is pretty simple, just super steep and you just need the legs, but hopefully
01:12you can go for it today.
01:15There are plenty of contenders for the overall podium and Richard Carapaz, currently fourth
01:20in the standings, knows that today is absolutely crucial.
01:25It's going to be a tough final climb with some steep gradients at the end.
01:30I hope to be up there with the best guys.
01:33It's a very important day and we have to be up there to stay in the fight.
01:39David Godou has been searching for his best form for more than a year, but the Frenchman's
01:43looking solid at this Vuelta, only a minute and fifteen off the top five.
01:48Today's an uphill finish and I think that's where we'll really see who are the best climbers
01:53at this Vuelta and who's feeling fresh after more than ten days of racing.
01:58I still seem to have a bit of energy left, so hopefully I can have a good stage.
02:05Stage 13 is 176km with almost 3,500m of elevation gain.
02:11There are several looseners along the way, but it's all about the final climb, 7.5km
02:16at 9.3% with sections at up to 15%.
02:21This is a proper leg breaker.
02:23We've had a very, very active start, a large breakaway of 23 riders out front and they've
02:33been working very well together.
02:34They've had great cohesion, of course there's been action and riders wanted to try and go
02:39for the King of the Mountains points.
02:42It quickly became apparent that there would be two races today, one between the breakaway
02:46riders for the stage victory and one between the GC contenders.
02:51The peloton allowing the 23 leaders to open up a big gap.
02:55Wout van Aert was up there in the green jersey, but the Belgian was actually also collecting
03:00polka dot points over the early climbs.
03:03He snaffled eight in total to become the virtual King of the Mountains as well as the leader
03:08of the points classification.
03:10There were no shortage of strong men up front, including three from UAE Team Emirates, Solaire,
03:17Schmidt, Campenaerts, Woods, Asgraen, Oomen and Terns were also part of this group, who
03:23soon led by over 12 minutes, with the nearest man on GC over half an hour down on the red
03:28jersey of Ben O'Connor.
03:30The day's winner was somewhere among these 23 riders.
03:42Inside 48 kilometres to go from the front group of 23 riders, Victor Campenaerts the
03:46first to try and almost make a breakaway from the breakaway.
03:53Campenaerts was followed by three men, van Aert, Schmidt and Simon Guglielmi.
03:57Caden Groves had also made the breakaway and he was scrambling to close the gap before
04:01the intermediate sprint.
04:03But this pace was proving too much, Guglielmi and Groves both going backwards.
04:10The front group eventually swelled to a dozen, with Campenaerts dropping and others taking
04:14his place, including the UAE trio, Oomen and Woods.
04:19Back in the peloton, Movistar had decided it was time to up the tempo a bit on behalf
04:24of their leader, Enric Mas.
04:27Van Aert completing the day's principal mission, 20 more points to tighten his grip on green.
04:35Onto the penultimate climb of the day, the Puerto de Lumeras, which topped out with just
04:4020km to go.
04:42Up at the front, Soler was keeping everybody on their toes with a series of attacks, although
04:47he was unable to open any significant gaps.
04:51The Spaniard was overhauled by van Aert before the summit, the Belgian simply untouchable
04:56today in his pursuit of points.
04:59Crash with one of the riders, one more rider down.
05:06Jay Vine is back on his feet.
05:08This is McNulty who has just been helped out of the bushes, having crashed on that corner.
05:15He's being helped to his feet and helped back to the road.
05:18Disaster for UAE then, but luckily both riders managed to finish the stage.
05:24The five remaining frontmen hitting the final climb, van Aert, Soler, Oman, Woods and Schmidt.
05:30Schmidt was the first to attack, but the Swiss champion was soon caught and passed by his
05:34Canadian counterpart, Mike Woods, gunning for glory.
05:39The 37-year-old had soon opened up a 30-second gap.
05:44The peloton also reaching the climb with Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe taking control.
05:51Danny Martinez doing all sorts of damage and shattering this group.
05:57Woods was soaring away to victory, but further back, the red jersey O'Connor was in a world of pain.
06:05Roglic taking over in the GC group with only Mass and Kuss following for now.
06:10O'Connor had already dropped to around 30 seconds and his losses would no doubt be heavier
06:15at the finish line.
06:17A rider who thrives in the Vuelta, thrives on these steep gradients.
06:21And on stage 13, as he takes a look over his shoulder, Mike, there's no one behind you.
06:27A wonderful performance, another Vuelta stage victory, and it's the maple leaf that's victorious.
06:34Mike Woods, the Canadian champion, wins stage 13.
06:39Woods reigning supreme, while Roglic emerged as the day's big winner on GC, finishing solo
06:45and putting time into all of his rivals.
06:51Woods taking his third stage victory at La Vuelta, following successes in 2018 and 2020.
06:57At 37, he is the fourth oldest stage winner at this race and achieves his objective of winning
07:02in the Canadian national jersey, a first Grand Tour triumph this season for Israel Promete.
07:09I'm on cloud nine right now.
07:11Yeah, my big goal was to win a race with this jersey.
07:13I've had a tough season this season with illness, about a tough race in terms of bad luck,
07:18a lot of mechanicals and crashes and missed time moments.
07:21So this is a big moment of catharsis, a big release.
07:25The pressure's been building and to get this win now, I'm on cloud nine.
07:30Woods winning by 45 seconds from Schmidt, with Soler taking his third third place of the week.
07:35Roglic led in the GC favourites, finishing 35 seconds ahead of Landa,
07:39almost a minute ahead of Maas and one minute 55 clear of O'Connor.
07:46The Australian's lead is down to just a minute and 21 seconds now over Roglic.
07:51Meanwhile, there were just 19 seconds separating Maas, Carapaz and Landa.
07:57It was an excellent day for Wout van Aert, who increased his lead in the green jersey competition
08:02to 112 points over Caden Groves.
08:06He is also our new king of the mountains, leading Soler and Wijn by 13 points.
08:14Carlos Rodriguez lost a few seconds to Schielmotor today,
08:17but he is still in the white jersey, leading Florian Lippovitz by 17 seconds.
08:23There is no rest for the wicked and tomorrow the riders will cover 200 kilometres,
08:27the longest stage with a long climb in the final.
08:31Join us for that on Saturday and thanks for watching.
