00:00He may still be recovering from a back injury, but that didn't stop Primoz Roglic taking
00:07control of La Vuelta yesterday.
00:11Today it's over to the sprinters with round three of the battle between Wout van Aert
00:16and Caden Groves.
00:19I have the jersey around my shoulders and so far it's quite a battle with Caden.
00:26I think today normally that will continue, so it's nice.
00:32Groves is confident he can outdo the Belgian on a flatter, straighter finish than on stages
00:37two and three.
00:40So I think the fastest will win today and it's not so much about who's on whose wheel.
00:47I think we've got the strongest team because we focus more on the sprints, so there'll
00:52be a lot of eyes towards us I believe.
00:55Van Aert and Groves are the big favourites then, but other sprinters like New Zealand's
00:59Corbin Strong still believe in their chances.
01:04I think I have the potential to upset them, so hopefully I get it right with the team
01:09today and I can fight and stay in good position and open my sprint as fresh as possible and
01:17really take it to Wout and Caden.
01:19A lot of teams will be solely focused on the sprint, but Oskar Taliscardi and Keirn Farmer
01:24will no doubt be on the attack long before then.
01:30Is the breakaway an obligation for you?
01:32Yes, the team will try to be in the breakaway, but we do have an option in the sprint as
01:36well.
01:37We're just learning little by little and we'll see how we do.
01:42177k between Fuente del Maestre and Sevilla without a single categorised climb, that's
01:50a rarity on this Vuelta.
01:53After yesterday's battle on Pico Vizuercas and with more high temperatures forecast,
01:57the peloton could be forgiven for taking it easy on this fifth stage.
02:06As expected, there was a relaxed start to the day's action.
02:09There's still a lot of road and a lot of climbing between now and Madrid, so the riders have
02:14to recover where they can.
02:16And also as expected, the two wildcard teams both had a man in the breakaway.
02:20Ibon Ruiz of Keirn Farmer already on the attack for the third time this week in the
02:25green.
02:26He was joined by Xhermin Juaristi of Uzcatel Ascari in the orange and they quickly opened
02:30up a five-minute lead.
02:33Little by little, the sprint teams began to post riders on the front of the peloton to
02:36start bringing down the gap.
02:39Here's a sign we've got used to on the Vuelta in recent years, Roglic in the red jersey.
02:44In fact, since it was introduced in 2010, nobody has worn a Roja more than the Slovenian,
02:49a total of 38 days.
02:51The next best is Chris Froome on 27.
02:56The peloton cruising along at around 35km an hour in the searing heat, with the riders
03:01just looking to stay cool and hydrated.
03:04The domestique were kept busy going back and forth between the cars to fetch bidons for
03:08their leaders.
03:09Today, Sevilla hosts a Vuelta stage finish for the first time since 2010.
03:15The last rider to take victory in the city was Brian Kocka on the Tour of Andalusia 2017,
03:21although that didn't necessarily leave a lasting impression.
03:24Yeah, I just found out on the podium actually, I won there on the Tour of Andalusia, but
03:30I couldn't tell you in which year it was.
03:332017.
03:34Any memories?
03:35I think the stage was shortened maybe.
03:38I definitely remember one stage in Sevilla, but I'm not sure it's the one you're talking
03:41about.
03:42But I do have some memories.
03:46Into the last 50km and the pace suddenly began to increase, with a slight crosswind making
03:51the peloton nervous.
03:53The speed increasing to over 50km an hour, which brought the gap to the two breakaway
03:57riders down to just one minute.
04:01It would soon be game over for Juaristi and Ruiz, especially with Van Aert and Groves
04:06eyeing up the intermediate sprint at 25k to go.
04:10A lot more stress and urgency in this peloton now, as it all came back together.
04:24And look at that.
04:25Adria opens up the door and Wout van Aert comes flying through, as does a powerful Caden
04:31Groves.
04:32Both of them throw for the line.
04:34It looks as though Groves took the 20 points.
04:39Groves once again pipping Van Aert to the line, but they were the only two to contest
04:43that sprint.
04:44It would be a different story in Sevilla, which the riders soon reached.
04:48There was then a terrible moment for EF Education Easypost as two of their riders went to ground.
04:55First Owain Dool and then Rui Costa, who couldn't avoid his team-mates on this bend, and the
05:00Portuguese champion would be forced to abandon.
05:04The sprint seems jostling for position on these wide, wide roads, and with just under
05:094k to go, they were into the final straights.
05:12Time for a high-speed shootout in the Andalusian capital.
05:18Now it starts to open up.
05:20It's quite messy.
05:21Brian Kockaar is there for confidence in that red and white jersey.
05:25Bittner's trying to move himself up for Team DSM Firmenik, as is Arne Marit.
05:30Currently it's still Alpecin de Keuninck, who's still got one rider in his alley plank
05:34at 4k to Groves.
05:35Here the sprint starts to launch.
05:37Here's Pavel Bittner, who's got the jump.
05:39Here's Wout van Aert in the green jersey, coming in, and it's like a bull has been unleashed.
05:43It's going to be a throw to the line, and that's close, but it looks as though Pavel
05:48Bittner has just taken his first Grand Tour stage victory.
05:54Marit, do you know who won?
06:07How do you feel?
06:08What the fuck?
06:09On August 5th, Bittner took his first professional win at the Tour of Burgos.
06:13Today, the 21-year-old became a Grand Tour stage winner.
06:16This could be the start of a stellar sprint career.
06:21Unbelievable.
06:22I mean, only a few weeks ago, a few days ago, I got my first pro win.
06:26So, yeah, to get the win at my first World, it's really...
06:31I still don't believe it.
06:34I think with DSM, we did a big portion of work, and a lot of work went into this.
06:39A lot of people, and especially in the final, the whole team was working.
06:43You had to beat Dan Wout in a long sprint.
06:45He's one of the best long sprinters in the world.
06:47It's just crazy.
06:50Bittner out sprinting van Aert and Groves to take a victory that will live long in the memory.
06:54He's the first Czech rider to win a Vuelta stage since Zdeněk Štíbar in 2013.
06:59No drama today for the race leader Primoz Roglic.
07:02He remains eight seconds clear of his nearest challenger, João Almeida.
07:08Van Aert picked up seven more points than Groves on today's stage,
07:11so he slightly increases his lead in green to 13.
07:18There was no action today in the mountains competition.
07:20Sylvain Monniquet is in polka dots before we hit the climbs again tomorrow.
07:24And Antonio Tiberi is still the best young rider by just three seconds from Renat van Aertveldt.
07:30Join us again tomorrow for a punchy sixth stage, and thanks for watching.
