00:00Primoz Roglic seized control of Vuelta yesterday and is potentially just a day away from his
00:06fourth overall victory.
00:08The Slovenian's in red for the 40th time, but he and his team still have plenty of work
00:12to do on the road to Picon Blanco.
00:15It doesn't really matter strongest or not strongest, but we just have to manage it,
00:22we have to be there, we have to fight, do our best and that's all we can do and we see
00:29what that means with the result at the end.
00:32Having led the race for 13 days, Ben O'Connor is now determined to save his spot on the
00:37overall podium.
00:39What do you expect from your opponents on GC, the guys behind you?
00:44I mean, the same as pretty much every single day so far, MNAS and Carapaz in particular
00:52are the most aggressive and they're going to try once again to try and drop me.
00:58Enric Mas gained a minute on O'Connor yesterday and the Spaniard says that he likes the look
01:03of today's mountain bonanza.
01:06I like it when it's this hard. The climbs aren't as tough as some of those that we've
01:12already done, in Granada for example or on other stages, but still I think I can do well
01:18on this stage.
01:21Meanwhile, it's a red-letter day for Thomas de Gendt, who'll be retiring at the end of
01:25this year, the 37-year-old Belgian celebrating his 500th Grand Tour stage.
01:32It's difficult to achieve, I think. You have to be without any injuries for a very long
01:37time to be able to do so many Grand Tours. It's just a personal goal of me to achieve
01:45the 500, so now in the last Grand Tour I could achieve it.
01:54Stage 20 could be described as a Toblerone stage, with climbs littered throughout the
01:58day. And the closer we get to Pican Blanco, the harder they get. The final climb itself
02:03is 8km at over 9%, so expect fireworks. In fact, on a day with nearly 5,000 metres of
02:10elevation gain, anything's possible.
02:15Stage 20 is officially underway. 172km and 4,720 metres of elevation.
02:25There was yet another fast-paced start, as the riders who still have a bit of energy
02:30left tried to fight their way into the breakaway. Ten men eventually went away as they approached
02:35the first climb of the day. The top three in the mountains classification were correct
02:40and present, Marc Solaire, Jay Vine and Pablo Castrillo. Also along for the ride were Clément
02:46Bertet, Jack Haig, Carlos Canal, Harald Tejada, Thomas Champion, Sylvain Monniquet and Marco
02:52Frigo in the break for the sixth time at this race.
02:57Several riders were unhappy about missing the move, and they tried to bridge across,
03:02including Max Poole, Pavel Bitner and Kasper Asgreen, but they'd missed their opportunity.
03:07Vine leading Castrillo and Frigo over the first climb as the gap increased to around
03:12two minutes.
03:17This was a rollercoaster stage with very little respite between the climbs. The break was
03:22soon embarking on number two of seven, as Xavier Isassa tried to attack from the bunch.
03:29At the front, Vine, Castrillo and Solaire were gearing up for another tussle.
03:43Asgreen, Bitner and Isassa were still stranded between the break and the peloton, but the
03:48gap began to drop as the Ineos Grenadiers hit the front. The chasers were all swallowed
03:53up on climb three, the Alto del Caracol, where Vine took another maximum haul ahead of Solaire.
03:59The polka dot jersey was heading to UAE, but to which rider?
04:05The next climb was longer, category one, and at this point, Solaire and Vine had pulled
04:09clear of the rest of the breakaway, along with Clément Bertet. The peloton closing
04:14the gap to around three and a half minutes, with T-Rex Quick-Step now on the front.
04:20Solaire going solo to take maximum points and then caught on the descent. Apparently
04:25there were no team orders from UAE, so the strongest man would take the jersey.
04:30Solaire attacking again on the fifth climb.
04:39The Spaniard pulling around 30 seconds clear, but it didn't look like he or the breakaway
04:43would be going for the stage honours, because the peloton were now within three minutes.
04:49Solaire taking five more points to draw level with Vine at the top of the polka dot standings,
04:54but he was once again caught on the descent.
04:59On to the penultimate climb, and it was soon game over for Solaire, with the peloton now
05:03closing fast. T-Rex bringing the gap down to a minute before Cattaneo launched Lambda.
05:10White jersey contenders Skjelmozer and Rodriguez were briefly distanced, and with 32k to go,
05:16it was breakaway over, as Vine and Bertet were caught by the red jersey group.
05:21Skjelmozer managed to get back on terms, and almost as soon as he had, Pavel Sivakov attacked.
05:28The Frenchman going over the summit solo. Meanwhile, Primoz Roglic was looking comfortable,
05:33even if three of his team-mates had abandoned on the day, Martinez, Gamper and Dens.
05:40Vine holding on to take two points from the GC group and snatching the polka dot jersey
05:44back from Solaire. Sivakov now leading by around a minute.
05:50Here's Sivakov, rounds the right-hand corner. 55 seconds is the advantage, and he'll get
05:56to the base of the climb with 7.9km to go. Sivakov leading the way up the final climb
06:03with Florian Lipovic setting the tempo for Roglic in the red jersey group. Then with
06:075k to go, Eddie Dunbar attacked, the stage 11 winner setting off in pursuit of Sivakov.
06:14The GC favourites just marking each other for now, as Dunbar caught and passed the UAE
06:20The riders reaching the steepest passages at 18%, but the gaps never really opened up.
06:26Dunbar gritting his teeth as O'Connor, who had been distanced, caught up with the help
06:30of Felix Galle. The Irishman entering the final kilometre with around 15 seconds, and
06:36despite some half-hearted attempts from the favourites, nobody would catch him.
06:40300m for the Irishman. He came into this Grand Tour having never won a Grand Tour stage.
06:48He'd gone through so many trials and tribulations, injuries, having to come back from adversity.
06:53And right now, Eddie Dunbar is coming into this World Tour and he's stamping his authority.
06:59On the penultimate stage, on the final mountain stage, he comes into the barriers, he's sprinting
07:04for everything he's got left. 150m remaining for the Irishman of Jaco Alula. What a performance.
07:11He looks around over the right-hand shoulder. He pushes a big gear. He's got a few hundred
07:16metres left and he's got no one in sight. Well, fortune favours the brave and the brave
07:22is rewarded. Eddie Dunbar is a two-time Grand Tour stage winner.
07:29Dunbar doubling up in some style on Picon Blanco and becoming the fifth rider to win
07:34multiple stages of this World Tour after Van Aert, Roglic, Groves and Castrio. After battling
07:39through some difficult periods, the 28-year-old has now picked up three of his five career
07:44victories in the past few months and he has certainly made his mark on this race.
07:49There's going to be more ups and there's going to be more downs. That's just the way life
07:52is and I've learned that throughout my career. But moments like this don't come around too
07:58often. I've had two of them now in the last two weeks and I'm just looking forward to
08:04sharing these moments and celebrating them with friends and family.
08:11Dunbar holding on to win by seven seconds from Maas, followed by Roglic, Carapaz, Berrade
08:16and O'Connor, who only shipped 14 seconds. Roglic is heading for victory then, with O'Connor
08:21set to claim his first Grand Tour podium. The Australian is just nine seconds ahead
08:26of Maas and 58 kia of Carapaz. Rodriguez, though, drops to tenth after losing more than
08:30five minutes. No sweat for Cade and Groves, who'll be going home with the green jersey
08:35tomorrow. And Jay Vine will conquer the mountains after that barnstorming battle with his team-mate
08:42Solaire.
08:44Schelmose is looking good for victory in the youth classification. He leads Lipowitz by
08:48over a minute before the final individual time trial. It's a flat 25k course around
08:54Madrid to round out this 79th edition. So join us again for the final hurrah on Sunday
08:59and thanks for watching.
