00:00Primoz Roglic struck another blow at La Vuelta yesterday, taking his second stage win ahead
00:08of Enric Mas.
00:09The Slovenian doesn't appear to be suffering after his crash at the Tour, and he's cut
00:13Ben O'Connor's lead to under four minutes.
00:16The Aussies expect him to be put under serious pressure again today.
00:19It'll be a good battle today.
00:21I think it doesn't really get too much more exciting than these climbs.
00:26To be honest, it's epic and, yeah, it's going to be a good one.
00:29Primoz will try to give it a pretty big crack, Enric as well.
00:33I think they showed yesterday that they were super, super good, so I expect them to give
00:40their best to drop me again.
00:44Today is a big mountain stage which could suit the breakaway, especially if some of
00:48the peloton's top climbers manage to fight their way into the right move.
00:54I think there'll be a few leaders trying to get into the breakaway.
00:58Tomorrow's a rest day, followed by two stages which shouldn't be too taxing for the GC
01:03riders.
01:04So if some riders want to try to make up a bit of time, it's better to be one step ahead.
01:10UAE suffered a major blow this morning as João Almeida abandoned with illness.
01:15After winning the Giro and the Tour with Tadej Pogacar, the team will now switch their focus
01:19from GC to hunting stages.
01:22We'll keep going, we still have a very strong team.
01:25We'll try to be back at the front and get in the breakaway, pretty much the whole team.
01:29We're all quite far back on GC.
01:31We might end up in the top ten overall, but we're not fighting for the top places, so
01:36I think we should have some good opportunities, we'll see.
01:42Stage nine is the first proper day in the mountains in the Sierra Nevada, which is familiar
01:46territory for much of the peloton given all the altitude camps that are held here.
01:51For a first well-earned rest day, the riders will be able to give this one their all.
01:55There are three big climbs, including two ascents of the Alto de Hazianas before a downhill
02:00sweep into Granada.
02:02This evening we will no doubt have a clearer picture of who is going to be fighting for
02:06the overall podium.
02:13No fewer than 26 riders got into the day's breakaway, and as Godu predicted, there were
02:18plenty of leaders in there, including the Frenchman himself.
02:21UAE demonstrating their new attacking approach by getting three men into the move, Adam Yates,
02:26Marc Zolaire and Jay Vine.
02:28Wout Van Aert was also in there, along with Chris Harper and Max Poole, this breakaway
02:32built to go the distance.
02:36Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe pacing the peloton for Roglic, with race leader O'Connor adopting
02:41a more defensive strategy and looking to save his team-mates for later in the day.
02:48UAE setting a furious tempo as the breakaway reached the first climb, with Zolaire and
02:52Vine clearly working on behalf of Yates, no doubt their best option for a stage victory.
02:58Van Aert was among the riders going backwards, but Godu still had a team-mate in Stefan Kung.
03:03Further back, the peloton was also being thinned out, as one rider decided to make an ambitious
03:08move.
03:10Richard Carapaz, the Ecuadorian, has taken a flyer, and this is very, very interesting.
03:17Carapaz embarking on an individual pursuit of the breakaway, who were four minutes up
03:22the road.
03:23As the leaders reached the summit of the first climb, Godu taking the ten King of the Mountains
03:27points onto a short and swift descent before tackling Hazayanas, and it's seven kilometres
03:33at 9.5 per cent.
03:36Carapaz getting some assistance from his team-mate Darren Rafferty, who'd been dropped
03:40from the original breakaway as he continued to close the gap.
03:46The cream rising to the top as the leaders scrambled their way up Hazayanas, with only
03:50three men left at the front, Vine, Yates and Godu.
03:54Harper and Kung a little further back, and they were followed by Carapaz, who was having
03:59a superb ride, though he still trailed the front group by around a minute.
04:07Red Bull, meanwhile, were still in control of the red jersey group, with O'Connor now
04:11down to just one team-mate in Felix Gao.
04:17Yates made his move with 58km remaining, and Godu was unable to follow, the British rider
04:23quickly opening up a one-minute gap.
04:27Carapaz was still a man on a mission, but catching Yates was starting to look like a
04:31tall order as they entered the final 50km.
04:35The Ecuadorian soon bridged across to Vine and Godu, with Castrillo also along for the
04:39ride.
04:42Yates attacking the final climb, with two and a half minutes on the chase group and
04:46over six and a half on the peloton.
04:48Barring any accidents, the stage was his, though he did seem to be struggling in the
04:52heat.
04:54Back in the GC group, Florian Lippovitz was doing some damage on behalf of Roglic, with
04:58Sepp Kuss saying goodbye, but Roglic himself wasn't looking too hot, and Enric Mas sensed
05:03this was the moment to try to put some time into the Slovenian.
05:09Nobody could follow the Spaniard when he attacked, O'Connor and Roglic chasing in a small group
05:14that also contained Mikel Landa and Carlos Rodriguez.
05:17Solid stuff this from Mas.
05:19Yates meanwhile was being roared on as he reached the summit of Hazar Janas for the
05:23second time, there'd be no catching him.
05:27Mas looking set to take at least 30 seconds on his rivals, but then this happened.
05:31Mas almost comes down, a little mistake and he goes onto the gravel.
05:36Precious seconds lost and he would eventually be caught by the O'Connor group.
05:42Yates heading into the finish in Granada after a Pagacar-esque demonstration with everybody
05:47except Carapaz reeled in by the GC group, a barnstorming end to a spectacular first
05:53week.
05:54UAE Team Emirates and Adam Yates have grabbed the bull by the horns.
05:59An attack, 58.2 kilometres to go and it's Adam Yates, the man from Bari, who is victorious
06:05on stage 9 and what a performance that has been.
06:09Yeah, let's go, come on.
06:14Yates landing one of the most impressive wins of his career after that remarkable solo,
06:18it's only his second Grand Tour stage victory.
06:21The 32-year-old's having an excellent year, having already won the Tour of Oman and the
06:25Tour de Suisse, UAE bouncing back in style after they lost Almeida.
06:31I never suffered like this before, it's so hot out there from the last climb but it's
06:35cramping full and I didn't know if I could go.
06:38You know, I've had a lot of bad luck over the years in Grand Tours and I really didn't
06:42know if I could make it but I'm just so happy I could finally win another Grand Tour stage.
06:49Yates notching his sixth win of the season by a minute and 39 from Carapaz with O'Connor
06:53pouncing to take third place from the GC group and four bonus seconds.
06:59The Australian therefore finishes the first week with the lead of 3 minutes 53 over Roglic.
07:04Carapaz jumps up 15 places to third with Yates and Godou also up into the top ten.
07:11No change in the points classification today with Van Aert still 41 points clear of Caden
07:16Groves.
07:18We do have a new king of the mountains though, Yates collecting 22 points today to go four
07:23clear of Roglic.
07:26There's also been a shake-up in the youth classification with Lipovic now leading by
07:3031 seconds from Carlos Rodriguez.
07:32Antonio Tiberi had to abandon with heat stroke.
07:36The riders now have a chance to catch their breath on Monday's rest day before La Vuelta
07:40resumes in Galicia on Tuesday.
07:42Enjoy the day off and we'll see you again for Stage 10.
