00:01:34We are coming to you from Center Stage Theater on West Beach Street in Atlanta.

00:01:38Since 1989, this has been the home of WCW Saturday Night.

00:01:42And of course, we are celebrating 20 years of World Championship Wrestling on TBS, Missy.

00:01:48I know, and it's so exciting, but I remember years ago seeing Mr. Gordon Soley that's right over here.

00:01:53You know, limousines have been coming all day, and here's the man who set the standard, Gordon Soley,

00:01:57along with the eighth wonder of the world, Andre the Giant.

00:01:59Gordon, I know this means a lot to you as well as everybody.

00:02:02It does indeed. It's a very exciting night. It's an opportunity to enjoy a bit of nostalgia,

00:02:07a chance for some of our younger fans to see some of the older great stars of professional wrestling,

00:02:13and the Space Odyssey continues as we go into the future.

00:02:15And, Andre, it's great to have you with us.

00:07:04and I was a sophomore in college.

00:07:05That's right, 1972, Jim,

00:07:07I was back serving in the United States Navy,

00:07:10and it's hard to believe that 20 years have gone by.

00:07:13Fans, we have three championship matches signed,

00:07:16but one of those matches,

00:07:17the light heavyweight championship match,

00:07:18is in jeopardy.

00:07:19It seems to be some type of problem

00:07:21with the light heavyweight championship match.

00:07:23I am taking personal responsibility

00:07:25of trying to find out what that problem is.

00:07:28We're going to kick it off here, ladies and gentlemen,

00:07:29with the first of our championship events.

00:07:31It should be an outstanding contest,

00:07:33quite a rivalry involving Steamboat

00:07:35and Austin for the television title.

00:07:36That's right, Ricky, the Dragon Steamboat has come close

00:07:39many, many times to taking that TV title.

00:07:42Stunning Steve has managed to survive.

00:07:45Whether he can this time,

00:07:46we will find out in a short time.

00:07:48Fans, Ron Simmons is on the hotline

00:12:12First, there will be no disqualifications allowed.

00:12:16And secondly, manager Paul E. Dangerously

00:12:20will be suspended in the tiny steel cage.

00:12:24He will be suspended over the ring area.

00:12:31And the officials are here to escort Mr. Dangerously

00:12:35to the cage, where he will be retained

00:12:38during the duration of this contest.

00:12:40I think, personally, it stinks, Ross.

00:12:42I mean, that a man of Dangerously...

00:12:47The position this guy holds is head of the Dangerous Alliance,

00:12:50and he has to be put physically into a cage.

00:12:56Austin interferes.

00:12:57He and that telephone got him in trouble,

00:13:01and now he's paying for it.

00:13:03Austin is a tremendous wrestler,

00:13:05with or without Paul E. Dangerously,

00:13:07but this will ensure that this contest stays one-on-one,

00:13:11and as the old cliche goes, may the better man win.

00:13:14Well, we're definitely gonna see who the better man is.

00:13:17As I've said, Steamboat has come close,

00:13:19but you can see the Dragon still with the ribs taped up,

00:13:22obviously not fully recovered from the devastation

00:13:25he took in the tag team tournament a while back.

00:13:28So if Stunning Steve is worth his salt,

00:13:30he's gonna check out the Dragon's ribs,

00:13:32and he's doing it right away.

00:13:33Austin going right to work on the body

00:13:35in the early going here.

00:13:36Steamboat, who suffered broken ribs

00:13:38in the NWA tag team tournament,

00:13:40still is nursing those sore ribs,

00:13:44and he's hammering back,

00:13:45but he missed with the martial arts,

00:13:47and Austin goes right back to work

00:13:49for those heavy rights and lefts to the ribs.

00:13:51And so far, more forearms, more punching,

00:13:54and not a lot of wrestling.

00:13:55There's a B.O. throw out of the corner.

00:13:57Headlock, hip toss, takeover,

00:13:58and now we're getting into the wrestling end.

00:16:31If there's a way out of that cage, Paulie will find it.

00:16:34But I don't think that there is.

00:16:35Near fall and Austin rolling Steamboat on the shoulders.

00:16:39Boy, these guys have had some phenomenal matchups.

00:16:43I was in the Omni in Atlanta on August 16th

00:16:45when they went to a time limit draw.

00:16:47What a match it was.

00:16:49Many of our fans saw that this past week on the Power Hour.

00:16:51The all new Power Hour, we should add.

00:16:54And you know what the nasty thing is about a headlock like this, Jim Ross?

00:16:58That's what can give you cauliflower ears.

00:17:01And if you've ever seen a cauliflower ear, it ain't pretty.

00:17:05Keep you right out of Hollywood.

00:17:10And the Dragon, you can see him yelling and taunting Paulie Dangerously.

00:17:13Kind of a cheap shot on Paulie, considering he's suspended in a cage.

00:17:24And again, landing on his feet.

00:17:26Austin trying to free himself.

00:17:27And Steamboat very pugnacious.

00:17:28And this time Austin pulled a hair.

00:17:30Well, when in doubt, you can always pull the hair.

00:17:32It works every time when you got a beautiful head of hair like the Dragon has.

00:17:35Easy to get those fingers into it.

00:17:41Steamboat with a good counter move.

00:17:43Boy, this is fast paced.

00:17:45Up on that second turnbuckle.

00:17:47Austin now coming up after him.

00:17:53And he catapults him off the corner.

00:17:55And Steamboat hammers to the canvas.

00:17:59And he's clutching the ribs, Ross.

00:18:01He obviously jammed the ribs when he hit the canvas right there.

00:18:05Steamboat in a real physical disadvantage.

00:18:14You know, Steamboat had better win this match.

00:18:16You know why?

00:18:18Because what on earth will he cry about if he loses?

00:18:20He can't blame Dangerously.

00:18:22He can only blame himself.

00:18:24Well, I haven't heard him cry too many times in his career, quite frankly.

00:18:27As Austin scoops him up.

00:18:29And there's a perfectly executed backbreaker.

00:18:31A very sound technical move, Jesse Davante Ventura.

00:18:35Right into those short ribs.

00:18:36The injured ribs on the dragon Steamboat.

00:20:21But it's countered with a hip toss by Ricky the Dragon Steamboat.

00:20:28Austin lowered his head a little early.

00:20:37the greatest television champion ever in WCW.

00:21:57Steamboat could not reach back and hooked the leg.

00:22:00And Austin was able to kick out.

00:22:02I'm amazed that Steamboat had the intestinal fortitude just

00:22:05to get Austin up on that one.

00:22:07He's got him cradled.

00:22:08And he's got the tights.

00:22:10And Steamboat again just barely, barely able to kick out at two.

00:22:16Austin now seems to be building some momentum here

00:22:19in this championship event.

00:22:23Hard right hand to the ribs.

00:22:25Austin has Steamboat up.

00:25:31You know, I was a member of the infamous East-West Connection.

00:25:37So I know tag team wrestling.

00:25:39I know what it takes.

00:25:40And it's tremendous action.

00:25:41And what a history TBS has had in the last 20 years with tag

00:25:45teams.

00:25:46So, ladies, let's take a quick look at just some of the teams

00:25:48that make up the history of WCW wrestling right here on TBS.

00:43:46regarding the light heavyweight

00:43:47title.

00:43:48And in fact,

00:43:49we're all going to have

00:43:50Here are five days regarding the Light Heavyweight Championship currently held by Brad Armstrong.

00:43:55Let's go now up to Tony Schiavone standing by with Cowboy Bill Watts.

00:43:59Okay, Jim, thank you very much.

00:44:01As all our fans know, and you've been telling us on WCW Saturday night, Brad has suffered

00:44:05an injury.

00:44:06He was in Sapporo, Japan recently, wrestling the Great Muda, injured his knee, and he's

00:44:10been working very hard to try to get into shape to wrestle tonight on Clash of the Champions.

00:44:14But the doctors have said, no, Bill, he cannot wrestle tonight to defend the Light Heavyweight

00:44:18title against Flying Brian.

00:44:19That's very true.

00:44:20You know, when you're looking at young athletes, the first thing you look for is a great heart.

00:44:23And Brad Armstrong has it.

00:44:25And this kid was wanting to go so bad on the Clash.

00:44:27His dad's here, who was one of the guys that started the tradition on TBS.

00:44:32And this young man was wanting to go no matter what.

00:44:34But we figure his doctor knows a little something about injuries, and that was a tear in the

00:44:38ligament.

00:44:39That's a serious thing.

00:44:40And to push it too soon could end his career forever.

00:44:44So we've made a rough decision.

00:44:45But the decision is because it's been over five weeks since he's defended the title.

00:44:50We're stripping him of the title.

00:44:51And we will hold a tournament.

00:44:52We'll announce the time and the date and the place for that tournament.

00:44:55And we're really sorry for Brad, because he's got the heart.

00:44:57He's part of what makes this tradition great here.

00:44:59Our heart goes out to him, but we do have to honor the decisions of the medical doctors.

00:45:39years that we're celebrating this evening.

00:45:40On the other hand, I'm extremely let down because of the severity of my injury that

00:45:45I can't possibly defend my title and be 100%, you know?

00:45:49My dad is here.

00:45:50I feel like I've let my family down.

00:45:53I try really hard to uphold that title belt.

00:45:55I traveled to Japan, and I did everything that I could to be ready for tonight.

00:46:00Well, Brian Pillman has come out, and this is the man you were supposed to wrestle tonight

00:46:06and defend that World Light Heavyweight Championship.

00:46:08Brian, it's got to be disheartening for you.

00:46:11I mean, you trained, you focused, you're the former champ.

00:46:13You had a shot to get it back tonight, but now it doesn't look like it's gonna happen.

00:57:43the finest Falls County New York wrestler I have ever seen.

00:57:46So much for the shoulder drop. He went for the pin very early there.

00:59:32he's a smarter guy than he looks. That's right, he ain't no dummy.

00:59:38if his opponent is not waiting for him, he'll drop the elbow on him

00:59:41to the floor. But that time the champ was waiting.

00:59:44Cactus is no dummy. Oh, and look at him scratch the back!

01:01:59his share of problems in recent weeks with young Dustin Rhodes

01:02:02and that situation is far, far from over.

01:02:11I'm amazed at how well Cactus is doing actually wrestling in the ring

01:02:14with the champion. And a third clothesline and I'll tell you

01:02:17champion Ron Simmons is hurting right now.

01:02:20This may be all right here. Three high impact

01:02:23clotheslines. There indeed is a method to the madness of Cactus Jack

01:02:26as he reaches in that reverse chin lock.

01:02:29He's making Simmons carry that 300 pounds.

01:02:32And you know what the tough part is

01:02:35here for Ron Simmons? This ain't football.

01:02:38He don't get a chance to call timeout. He can't go to the sidelines

01:02:41if he's hurt. He's got to stick it out in there with a madman

01:02:44like Cactus Jack.

01:02:47I had comments from Cactus Jack and from Simmons

01:02:50on my radio program that airs every Sunday at 9 o'clock

01:02:53on WSB. They were really focused for this matchup.

01:02:56We knew then it was going to be a tremendous contest

01:02:59and that's exactly what we're seeing here. I'm very impressed

01:03:02quite frankly of the game plan that is being executed

01:03:05by Cactus Jack.

01:03:08Well everybody looks at him as strictly a brawler

01:03:11but you can tell the guy does have wrestling knowledge.

01:03:14You don't get into this business not knowing the ABC's

01:03:17of basic wrestling.

01:03:20Simmons back up vertical but Cactus caught him coming in again.

01:03:26over aggressive nature and now rams his head

01:03:29into the top turnbuckle. Follows it with a headbutt that even

01:03:32staggers Cactus and Simmons comes back with a headbutt.

01:03:35They're exchanging headbutts and Simmons gets the better of the situation.

01:03:44I'm sure all of Simmons friends

01:03:47at Florida State University including Coach Bobby Bowden watching this one.

01:04:43And that was a kind of a unique style backdrop.

01:04:46He actually suspended Cactus on his back and came down with his weight

01:07:30As we're taking a look at the celebration,

01:07:33the post-match celebration and what a tremendous crowd.

01:07:36This tournament was held over three days in Tokyo.

01:07:39Absolutely. You know, Chono winning the NWA title.

01:07:42There you see him getting the belt put on him.

01:07:45But you got to remember one thing.

01:07:48The guy had the home field advantage.

01:07:51Rude had to travel a long, long way.

01:07:54And, you know, the results could have been a little different

01:07:57had it happened here in the United States.

01:08:48But he and Rude really battled back and forth, back and forth.

01:08:51Quite frankly, Jesse, the body of Ventura,

01:08:54this match could have been won by either man virtually at any time

01:08:57in this contest, as the fans are saying.

01:09:00Absolutely, and that's the point I'm making, Jim Ross.

01:09:03Was Ravishing Rick Rude, as you can see, Rude here going for the piledriver,

01:09:06trying to finish Chono off right here. Wham! He hits it.

01:09:09But Rude had a distinct disadvantage. He's the visiting team,

01:09:12and you know as well as I do from pro football,

01:09:15it always helps to be the home team, Jim Ross.

01:09:18Well, he was at a disadvantage, but right here at this point in time in the contest,

01:09:21he was controlling the action. And here Rude would go to the top

01:09:25and take a major chance in this contest

01:09:28as the sold-out crowd looks on.

01:09:31Many thought here that it would be over.

01:09:39And hits that knee. The knee right off the top,

01:09:42but Chono would not stay down.

01:09:45As the match progressed,

01:09:48Rude continued to control the matchup,

01:09:51but then Chono turned the tables

01:09:54and started building offensive momentum, and then the Ravishing one

01:09:57made that big move. And he fires Chono outside the ring,

01:10:00but you can see Chono responding immediately to the top rope,

01:10:03catching Ravishing Rick Rude off balance,

01:10:06not ready for it, catches him with the shoulder, hooks the leg,

01:10:09one, two, and three, and wins it right there. Big upset in my book.

01:10:12What a matchup. I'd love to see a rematch between those two men.

01:10:15As a matter of fact, I know that Ravishing Rick Rude

01:10:18is really thinking about daily

01:10:21challenging Chono anywhere in the world for the NWA title.

01:10:24As a matter of fact, Jess, I know you've got something to say about that.

01:14:08Well, ladies and gentlemen, we know that Barry Windham and the Barbarian

01:14:11are in a real war.

01:14:13And, Cactus Jack, we know you have no love lost for Dustin Rose.

01:14:17But this Butch Reed situation is a complete surprise.

01:14:21It's a signal to Ron Simmons.

01:14:23See, this isn't the first time that Ron Simmons has been a world champion.
