00:00:00Welcome to PLZ Soccer's football show. We're live on YouTube. I'm Peter Martin, Alan Ruffin,
00:00:13Tam McManus here with me in the studio. Delighted to have your company. And if you get a chance,
00:00:19don't forget to hit that subscribe button and come and join the football family as we
00:00:23talk football and bring you lots of programming right across the whole of our channel, seven
00:00:30days a week. We've got reporters out at games. We're bringing you reaction to the results
00:00:35across the Scottish Premiership with managers and players talking to us. And we're delighted
00:00:41that so many of you have shown your support for us over the course of last season. And
00:00:45as we move into week two, we'll be discussing the Scottish Premiership over the weekend.
00:00:50But while Tam has a quick sneeze, we'll then move on to what can only be described as European
00:00:58football at Conference League level, where we were hoping that Kilmarnock and St Mirren
00:01:04would do a good turn for Scottish football in the first leg and set it up nicely for
00:01:09the second leg. Well, we'll talk about that. We'll talk about Callum McGregor retiring
00:01:14from international football. Adam Ida all set for a return at £6 million from Norwich
00:01:19to Celtic. Hearts extending Stevie Naismith contract might interest you. Rangers all set
00:01:25for the new Hampden home. And over and above that, Bojan Mijovski may well be offski from
00:01:30Scottish football and Lee Carsley checks in as England's interim boss. Just a few of the
00:01:36topics we'll be discussing as well as the charity shield with both halves of Manchester
00:01:41locked head to head. Ruffy, we wanted a good result in the both games. What was your take
00:01:49on it? Well obviously Tam saw more of the St Mirren game than me with his satellite
00:01:54disc. But again, I just feel if the results were away from home, we'd be sitting here
00:02:00going we've got a wee chance here. But I think unfortunately, I don't know about Kilmarnock
00:02:04but St Mirren by all accounts were very fortunate to get that goal late on. So try and believe
00:02:11that they can go away from home and get a win. But I think in the evidence, that team
00:02:16looked a lot better than St Mirren. Yeah, I mean listen, Norway has a population of
00:02:21about five and a half million. Similar to Scotland. You would have thought we were just
00:02:27starting out at times in football because they played great possession football, Bran.
00:02:35Admittedly, and I'll be fair to Steven Robinson and the side, they were 18 games into their
00:02:41season. They're sitting second top. But god, it just looked like two different teams playing
00:02:47at a different level. Yeah, I watched the St Mirren-Bran game and I thought that Bran
00:02:52were miles ahead in terms of technically, physically. But a massive advantage Peter,
00:02:5818 games into the season. St Mirren have played one league game and they weren't in the league
00:03:03cups as well. So I think that they've got a big ask on over at Norway. I think both
00:03:08teams now had to take a lead over there. I think when you look at Bodo Glimt coming
00:03:12to Celtic Park and wiping the floor with Celtic, I think the Norwegian league, I thought was
00:03:16maybe on a par, but watching those games last night and the highlights, I think they're
00:03:19maybe a wee bit ahead of us in terms of their quality. But they'll still believe, I think
00:03:24St Mirren. I think O'Hara was a big miss for them, Peter. Ole Sane, I think, suspended
00:03:29for the second leg. So I think Bergen will be strong favourites. I think Camarna against
00:03:34Tromso might be closer. I wasn't really impressed with Tromso. I watched the first half. I thought
00:03:38Camarna were well in that game. So, listen, it's going to be tough for both teams, Peter.
00:03:43I think we needed both to take a lead over to Norway.
00:03:45Do you think, I mean, we've got to cut Stephen Robinson some slack on the basis that you
00:03:50say, okay, the Norwegians, Bran, are 18 games into their season. But it was the way they
00:03:58played football, Tam, that I've been very, very complimentary about St Mirren and Kilmarnock
00:04:05towards the tail end of last season. Because, quite simply, although we all agree Scottish
00:04:11football last season, I thought the standard was very poor. Kilmarnock and St Mirren could
00:04:17brag at having good seasons and played some half decent football, but they just looked
00:04:22out of their depth.
00:04:23Yeah, they did. And the St Mirren goalkeeper was outstanding. He had three or four outstanding
00:04:28saves.
00:04:29By half-time?
00:04:30By half-time. I think St Mirren took, I think their first shot on target was like 70-odd
00:04:33minutes at home. They never had a corner until 70-odd minutes. They were totally dominated.
00:04:37But football's football, Peter. Anything can happen. And they got that goal at the end
00:04:41and that gives them hope going over to Bergen. But they'll need to play a lot better. I think
00:04:45St Mirren, Bran were excellent, but I didn't think St Mirren turned up, Peter. I think
00:04:49they had seven, eight players off the pace. And you can't do that in a big game like that.
00:04:53So they have to play the game of their lives and hope Bergen have enough to…
00:04:56Yeah, I have to say, Robbie, I'm worried now. I think both of them could be going out.
00:05:02And again, this is my bugbear. When we get to the start of the season, by the time you
00:05:07get to August, you're lucky if you've got two left in half-decent competitions.
00:05:11Yeah, I don't think we expected it last night. I think, obviously, Comarnach and St Mirren
00:05:15were the two top teams in the top six. You know, a breath of fresh air last year. I think
00:05:21maybe Tam said the St Mirren team are a big, strong team. They bully teams and that, but
00:05:27when the other team's got possession of the ball, you don't get bullying them. I mean,
00:05:30if you kind of get near them. So, I mean, stranger things have happened when you go
00:05:35away from home, but I don't think… When have those stranger things happened,
00:05:38Robbie? No, with these smaller teams. Not in the last committee. No, I'm still believing.
00:05:43I'm still believing. Believing what? One of them will get through. One of them? Which
00:05:47one? I think Comarnach, probably. You think so? Yeah, I think Comarnach will get through,
00:05:50yeah. Wow. I think they've got players that have scored goals and, as Derek was saying,
00:05:55they're losing silly goals. If they can tidy that up, you know, instead of giving away
00:06:00stupid goals, you know, they've got a chance. I think they're good enough to go away from
00:06:04home and get a 1-0 or something. To put it into perspective, Peter, Serko Brugge, who
00:06:08just beat Comarnach, got hammered off a Mulder in the Norwegian team 3-0 last night. So if
00:06:14that's his friend to them… How many times did you watch that game? About 12? That was
00:06:17an earlier kick-off. Shall we tell you something? Shall we tell you? I'm seriously worried
00:06:23because you know what things are like. Everybody now in life has to put up with the fact that
00:06:28your whole relationship is based on you breaking from social media to say, is there any dinner?
00:06:35Right? But the big man, you must sit in one room and she sits in the other and then you
00:06:41meet up at the time you go to bed. That's it. I watched all sorts of football. Serko
00:06:47Brugge were excellent. So that's what we're talking about. The Norwegian league does seem
00:06:52stronger than us. Rosenberger being the stars in Norwegian football in Europe. I haven't
00:06:56asked for a couple of seasons. I know but the standard is always in there. But I have
00:07:01to say, I don't share your enthusiasm, Ruffy. I must admit. I think we still, although there
00:07:09is tremendous enthusiasm around our game and we are fanatical about football, sadly our
00:07:16football is not at the standard that we'd like it to be. Although, I'd counter that
00:07:20by saying that I'm slightly heartened by some of the players that have come into the league.
00:07:27Some of the youngsters that I hope are going to shine. I'm hoping that maybe we'll see
00:07:32an improvement in what we're watching this season. Certainly on the basis, I'm only talking
00:07:36one game, but I enjoyed the Dundee Derby. Celtic were really good against Kilmarnock.
00:07:43They played some really good football, which I think Brendan Rodgers has taken a season
00:07:47to get it out of them. Whether that continues or not, I don't know. But isn't it amazing
00:07:52that our whole viewpoint changes when we have to see our clubs go and play in Europe and
00:07:58you see the standard and the difference in the levels.
00:08:00Do you know, I think, Pierre, when we watched the Euros, when you watched all the national
00:08:04teams playing, they played different football fairs. They played possession football, movement,
00:08:10making themselves available. We don't seem to play that style. We've not caught on to
00:08:15that style of football yet. I mean, Celtic do it and I think Rangers do it to a certain
00:08:19extent, but I think taking the other teams out, I think because they're not used to playing
00:08:25European football and they come up against these teams like last night, as Tam was saying,
00:08:30possession football. I mean, Kilmarnock don't have an experience, Mirren don't have an experience
00:08:36of coming up against that kind of European style of football.
00:08:39On the evidence of Tam and I in Germany, Scotland are able to keep possession 42 passes, but
00:08:45unfortunately they're still in their own half by the time they play the 42 passes. But nevertheless,
00:08:51it doesn't fill me full of confidence. What also doesn't fill me full of confidence is
00:08:56when we get messages on our live feed saying that we need to stop playing the low block.
00:09:04I'm not having any of this 21st century low block, although I do like one person who says,
00:09:10Stuart Derrick says, St Mirren need to keep the high balls low. I think that oversimplifies
00:09:16the whole thing because quite simply, St Mirren need to keep the ball, which they did not
00:09:21do in that first half. I thought they were well poor and if Steven Robinson wasn't reading
00:09:26them the Riot Act at half time, I'd have been gobsmacked because he was jumping up and down
00:09:31like a madman on that touchline.
00:09:33I think St Mirren against Valour physically overpowered them. You heard their manager
00:09:39come out and say that after the game, Peter. They were no match for St Mirren physically.
00:09:42I think the Norwegians are traditionally a big strong team. I think they handled St Mirren's
00:09:47physicality. Long balls in behind. When they got the ball, they were just on a different
00:09:52level to St Mirren. They kept the ball. But for great goalkeeping and poor finishing,
00:09:55the tie would have been over. St Mirren are still in the tie. One each, you go over there
00:10:00with a bit of hope. But St Mirren will need to play a lot better. They'll need to keep
00:10:04the ball better and they'll need to take whatever opportunities come their way. Because on last
00:10:08night's evidence, just watching that game, I thought Bergen were two or three levels
00:10:12ahead of them.
00:10:13I agree. Do you think, can you see anyone getting through?
00:10:17I think it's difficult to see any of our teams going away from home and winning. I think
00:10:21at home we're usually stuffy and hard to beat. It's been a long time since one of our teams
00:10:26has got a great result away from home. Including Celtic in that. Rangers have obviously been
00:10:31better in Europe. But I think both of the teams are out. I think Comanos and Munna both
00:10:34got out, sadly.
00:10:35I agree with you Tam. I think that is the case. Okay, you can give us your view on it.
00:10:40Do you think Kelly can go away and defeat Tromso? And what about SK Brann? Can St Mirren
00:10:46maybe just get into their groove and provide a real surprise? Certainly hope so. One of
00:10:52them or both of them. I'm quite happy to get absolutely battered on next week's show
00:10:57if they were able to do it. But I can't see it. What about you? Can you?
00:11:02This is the Football Show and thank you to so many of you for joining us. As you'll probably
00:11:07notice on a yearly basis, everybody just starts copying us. They watch what we're doing and
00:11:13then they think, well we'll go and try and do it as well. And they wait to see what we
00:11:17are up to and our innovations and then they start to copy us day in, day out. We're flattered
00:11:24Roffy with everybody who obviously needs direction.
00:11:28Yeah, it's not the first time that we've met somebody and talked to them about what they're
00:11:33going to do and they steal your ideas. We could sit here all day because there's been
00:11:37tons of them.
00:11:38Yeah, absolutely. And with that in mind, it's nice to have Tam with us because obviously
00:11:44he's got his rat face on with the Daily Record Boys the other day.
00:11:47Oh, he was doing podcasts with them and everything.
00:11:50A man's got to feed his family Peter.
00:11:52That's a very good point by the way.
00:11:54I need to get myself a better satellite dish as well. This one was buffering last night
00:11:58so I need to get a better stick.
00:12:00Absolutely. And don't forget, we will give you the chance to join us in the studio when
00:12:05Tam kisses the badge and then we wave goodbye to him. That's our competition for next week
00:12:10where he can go and join Keith and all his mates at the Daily Record, Roffy.
00:12:13Do you think we should bullet him?
00:12:16I never knew he did that. I'm a bit taken aback.
00:12:20Oh, fantastic.
00:12:22I didn't know you were like that at all.
00:12:24I think you were fortunate a few months ago that you didn't do something that you were
00:12:27going to do at Easter Road.
00:12:28Yes, that's true.
00:12:29Someone you used to work with.
00:12:30Peter would have had a brain hemorrhage.
00:12:32A bit of skullduggery going on there.
00:12:34That would have been the ultimate snake by the way.
00:12:37I managed to use my experience to hit that one in the head.
00:12:40Absolutely.
00:12:42Listen, we love it. Competition is healthy.
00:12:45The great thing about it is so many people, broadcasters, radio and of course maybe not
00:12:51as much on TV other than the live games but certainly you can watch people talking about
00:12:57football. We all love it and as we say often on this programme, if you want any kind of
00:13:04programme where it's just talking about your club in a positive manner and they can do
00:13:08nothing wrong, there's fanzines as well out there on podcasts where they talk positively
00:13:13about their club and don't criticise them.
00:13:17So this would not be the show for them?
00:13:19This is definitely not the show for them. Absolutely.
00:13:23It would be the show for you.
00:13:25Exactly. Absolutely.
00:13:30We'll miss you at the Christmas party.
00:13:34The night out with Jacko and them at Christmas party will be great, won't it?
00:13:39Absolutely. I think Jacko's the only one left.
00:13:43Anyway, Callum McGregor retires from international duty.
00:13:47Listen, he's served the country well. I think he's a wonderful player.
00:13:53I think probably Steve Clarke has just said thank you because you've been first class.
00:14:02Remind me his age, just off the top of your head.
00:14:0432 I think.
00:14:0632, he's done his bit. I think he's about the only player in Scotland who's been playing
00:14:1250, 60 games a season for a long, long time. That's got to take its toll at some stage
00:14:18and you've got to say to yourself, well the club, I love the club, I want to play with
00:14:25the club as long as possible and playing for Scotland curtails that by a couple of years.
00:14:30I don't want it to happen. I wouldn't think anybody would have a bad word to say about
00:14:35Callum calling it a day. There are a lot of Scottish players who do call it a day when
00:14:41you know you could have something to say about them.
00:14:44Can I ask you this? Should we not be accused of being too faced about this, because we
00:14:50have been on this programme before, Tam, saying the international manager should call time
00:14:55in your career. The world has changed now, hasn't it?
00:14:59Yeah, it has and 31 is still reasonably young, I think, to call it a day. He's lost his problems
00:15:04with his achilles, which is maybe a major issue for him. He's missed games for Celtic
00:15:08over the last season, which hasn't happened the seasons before that. Peter, you're right,
00:15:12he was playing 50, 60 games. I think that's caught up with him physically and he's decided
00:15:18that he wants to step away from international football. I know Scott Brown done the same
00:15:21and Scott Brown immediately regretted it because he found himself trooping around the shops
00:15:25with the Wayne's and the wife when Scotland were playing and I think he wanted to go back.
00:15:30So, whether Callum does that, I don't know. But Bruny done the same and then thought maybe
00:15:37it's better to get away with the boys again, but I don't know if Callum will do that.
00:15:40I think it began to do with the Euros. With some of the, not stick that he got, but a
00:15:46lot of people were... Callum McGregor?
00:15:48A lot of the supporters were saying he never played as well as what he used to do and blah
00:15:52blah blah. I know a lot of the midfield, but I personally thought there was a few people
00:15:57who had an unfortunate go at him because of his level of performance over the three games.
00:16:03But when you're playing that many games in a season, you're going to struggle a wee bit
00:16:08at that level.
00:16:09He wasn't really one of those players that I thought was in the firing line for any criticism
00:16:14because overall, the team I thought should have been, without going back over old ground
00:16:20with Scotland, I thought they should have been a wee bit more adventurous in the Switzerland
00:16:24game and certainly in the Hungary game and changes should have been made.
00:16:28But listen, you learn by your mistakes. But Callum was coming back off injury, as you
00:16:33said. I think that's a valid point, Tam, you make.
00:16:36Yeah, and as I say, I think it's caught me. Physically, everybody was saying, oh Callum
00:16:40McGregor plays every game, and he did. For the last four or five seasons, he's hardly
00:16:44missed a game. But you see in the last season, he was starting to miss games. He was out
00:16:48for a while over the Christmas period with his achilles. He's just come back, he's kind
00:16:52of rushed himself back. I don't think he looked 100% at the Euros. I think a lot of your players
00:16:56get criticised, including Callum. So maybe he's thinking, I want to make sure that I
00:17:00am 100% ready for Celtic. With big games coming up, Champions League, it's going to be difficult
00:17:05for me and those international breaks are a time for me to rest my body and maybe go
00:17:08away.
00:17:09He's got a level of performance that's way up there above everybody else. If he thinks,
00:17:13well, I'm going to drop down with the amount of games I'm playing and picking up injuries,
00:17:17I don't want to go through. I want to be my best.
00:17:20Okay, he's out. So who takes his place? Is it a Lewis Ferguson?
00:17:24Yeah, we've got three Nations games coming up. The people that were on the fringe I think
00:17:31should now be given a chance. I think there's a lot of players that have been there for
00:17:34a long time. Maybe Stevie Clarke will find a new way of playing, with more forward-thinking
00:17:40players on the side. So yeah, I think these guys will be now saying to themselves, well
00:17:44he's out, there might be two or three, there might be another two or three that might come
00:17:48out of the shell and say, well, I'm maybe no one to play either.
00:17:52Yeah, probably. I think you've got Gilmer, McTominay, McGinnon there anyway. You've got
00:17:56those three. You've got Lewis Ferguson obviously been out injured but hopefully he'll be back
00:18:00soon. And you might have some other younger players, young boy Watson, Nick Camarlot coming
00:18:04through, he looks really good as well. So you might have players coming through but
00:18:07I think, I agree with Ruffy, I think you might find maybe a few just thinking to themselves,
00:18:12maybe it's time for me to concentrate on my club. But it's such an honour to play for
00:18:16your country and I think it should be the manager saying, listen, you're not picked
00:18:21rather than you saying, I'm not going to turn up again for my country. I don't particularly
00:18:25agree with that but times have changed. Club rules are oost over country, Peter, as we
00:18:30know now.
00:18:31Absolutely. Adam Ida, it looks as if they're talking to try and finally get the deal over
00:18:37the line. Whatever that figure is, Adam Ida, what do you make of it as a signing for Celtic?
00:18:46Well, at the end of last season he came on and he scored big goals. You can't take that
00:18:51away from him, you know. And he looked the part but I think, I just think it's not a
00:18:59massive gamble but I think with the success that Celtic have had with picking up players
00:19:04down in England with £4, £5, £6 million, they think, I think they think he is a player
00:19:13that can go to another level. I think they're looking at it thinking, right, this could
00:19:19be another one that's maybe £6 million and maybe get £12 million for him in a couple
00:19:23of years. He's playing for Ireland, isn't he? He's an international player. I just don't
00:19:28know how he's going to fit in regular week in, week out in that Celtic team.
00:19:33Tam?
00:19:34Yeah, I think he's got all the attributes, Peter, to not only play for Celtic and do
00:19:39well domestically here in the Champions League but then go to England in the Premier League.
00:19:43I think he's six foot plus, he's left-sided, he's quick, he's physical, he scores goals,
00:19:49he's good in the air, he's got a nice touch. I think he's got all the attributes for Celtic
00:19:54to have two or three good seasons at Celtic, Peter, and then sell him down south for £20,
00:19:59£25 million if he does well. So I think that £6, £7 million could be money very well
00:20:05spent for Celtic.
00:20:06Yeah, of the Ida who Celtic fans have experienced and Paulo Bernardo, both of those players
00:20:13didn't start regularly. This might be the season if they're regular players, there are
00:20:18permanent signings that Brendan Rodgers says, OK, now you've got to really push, now you've
00:20:22got to convince me that you're part of this system that I'm building. Will it be enough
00:20:27for the Celtic fans? Are they expecting more? Are they wanting more?
00:20:31No, I don't think it'll be enough. I think both of those players were part of the squad
00:20:35last season, so Celtic fans will be thinking, well, I'm not really strengthened. They were
00:20:38still part of it. Bernardo and Ida, I think it's great for filling out the squad in terms
00:20:43of depth, but I think the Celtic supporters will want to see someone coming in better
00:20:47than Scales. I think they want to see someone coming in better than Taylor. I think those
00:20:51two areas in that left-hand side, if Celtic want to make an impact in Europe, have got
00:20:55to be strengthened. Domestically, no problem. I think both those guys will stroll through
00:21:00games, majority of the games in the Premiership, but Champions League you've got to find better
00:21:05for those two areas. That's the key for me. OK, Bernardo coming in and Ida coming in strengthens
00:21:10the squad, but if you want to strengthen the actual team, you're starting XI, you need
00:21:14to strengthen that left-hand side of the defence for me.
00:21:17Yeah, we've already said centre-back, left-back. Ida's one striker, I still think they need
00:21:23another striker and possibly someone in the midfield to replace Matt O'Reilly, who will
00:21:28undoubtedly be sold in the last week of the window.
00:21:31Yeah, I think that's why the Bernardo one had to go through. I think Brendan Rodgers
00:21:37knew at the end of the day, although they were going on about the fee and all that,
00:21:41I think Brendan Rodgers knew somebody from England would pay the asking price, so I think
00:21:46that's why it was so important for Bernardo to get in there. It doesn't stop the cry,
00:21:54the outrage when he goes, but it'll sort of muffle it a wee bit, but they need to come
00:21:58back with something else. I think they need two centre-halves. I think Cameron Vickers
00:22:02was picking up wee niggly injuries and I think the Celtic support noticed when he wasn't
00:22:08there for a month or so, it was a bit iffy for a wee while. Quality, they've got to buy quality.
00:22:13You're saying that, but Celtic have got horrors of centre-halves. I mean, they've got Kobayashi,
00:22:18they've got Lagerbielka, they've got Norocchi, they've got Welsh, they've got Scales, they've
00:22:22got Carter. I think they need to get Iddy. I'm sure three of them, Peter. You can't just
00:22:26keep signing centre-halves.
00:22:28No, exactly. And you can't keep centre-halves on your books who are a standard below. So
00:22:34I think, and some people might want to actually play regular football, I think Stephen Welsh
00:22:39must be looking insane himself, unless he's of the mind that he's thinking, OK, I'm on
00:22:44good money at the moment.
00:22:45He signed the new contract, didn't he? He signed the new contract.
00:22:47And Scales has signed a four-year deal. Norocchi, they want to listen to offers. They're quite
00:22:52willing to put him out on loan. So all of these decisions will be made. One story that
00:22:57came out that I think I'm really happy about is Stephen Naismith's had his contract extended
00:23:02to 2026 with his backroom team. And I think that's the reward for not only the last season,
00:23:09but I think they've started well. They look as if they're in a right good outfit with
00:23:14their bench as well.
00:23:15Yeah, they've got a strong squad, Peter. I think they're massive favourites again for
00:23:18third place. I think Stephen totally deserves it. I think he's done a fantastic job there.
00:23:23A lot of supporters weren't sure of him when he first came in. I think, I look back to
00:23:27the last game of that season when Hibbs visited them under Lee Johnson. If Hibbs won, they'd
00:23:32leapfrogged Hearts in that European place and they'd get a 0-0 draw with 10 men. And
00:23:37that was a sliding doors moment for me because I'm not so sure Stephen would have still been
00:23:40there if Hibbs would have won that and finished above Hearts.
00:23:43So ever since then, last season, the whole season, he was excellent. Started the season
00:23:47well against Rangers. European football to look forward to. I think their squad depth,
00:23:52I think their recruitment's been excellent. I think you look at guys like Danda and Pen
00:23:56Rice and guys like that who have come in. Spittle. They've got a real core of players
00:24:03who are used to the Scottish Premiership as well, Peter. So I think competition for places.
00:24:07I've kept Shankland, Hearts for me, massive favourites again to finish third and even
00:24:10try and push closer to Rangers.
00:24:12Yeah, the other thing I was going to suggest to you, and please don't think I'm being really
00:24:18pro-Hearts in this, but I'll open it up then and say to you, I cannot believe that Hearts
00:24:25and Hibbs are not sniffing around Ryan Jack who was in the stand watching the St Mirren
00:24:30game last night. He's a free agent and he has had offers from down south, as we know
00:24:37because he told us exclusively on PLZ Soccer where you get the best interviews. But quite
00:24:44simply, he's a player who's available, great experience, fit, free from injury.
00:24:51I agree, Peter, but we don't know how much Ryan's looking for. He might be outwith Hibbs
00:24:57and Hearts' budget. I don't know how much he'd be on at Rangers, but it'd certainly
00:25:01be miles more than Hibbs and Hearts could pay. I think if he was prepared to drop down
00:25:05to that level in terms of wages, I think every club outside Celtic Rangers would want him
00:25:09here. But whether he's prepared to do that or whether he's thinking to himself, I'll
00:25:13try and get a good deal abroad and make myself a few quid and go and play in the sun somewhere,
00:25:18we don't know. But I think he's obviously a no-brainer for teams like that, but it's
00:25:22all about what he's looking for. I think he'd be a great signing, Ruffy, and a real intent
00:25:27for a Hibbs or a Hearts in the middle of the park to get someone of that calibre. I have
00:25:33to say I agree with Tam. It's the player himself who decides, you know, is it money or is it
00:25:41playing football? What does he want at this stage of his career? You would like to think
00:25:46that it's football, playing with a good club that play good football and winning things
00:25:50or trying to win things, because he's obviously been at Rangers. So whoever gets him will
00:25:56have somebody who's come through a pedigree of playing with a top team, so that'll be
00:26:02a big asset for them.
00:26:03Yeah, absolutely. Okay, give us your thoughts on that. We're going to talk Scottish Premiership
00:26:09and the games over the weekend, some crackers to look forward to as well. We'll also discuss
00:26:15players who could be on their way out at some of the Scottish Premiership clubs and we'll
00:26:19look down south to the English charity Shield and the fact that Lee Carsley has come in
00:26:25as interim England boss. What do you make of that as well? Give us your thoughts on
00:26:30Komarnik and St Mirren, because quite simply they are just at this moment hanging on the
00:26:38edge of a cliff. Can they make it through? We don't think so. Tam and myself think both
00:26:43of them could be out. Ruffey thinks Komarnik maybe. Even Steven Robinson has mentioned
00:26:50in the press conference, if they are going to get through next week by knocking out SK
00:26:56Bran, they're going to have to perform better.
00:26:59I believe that our performance has to be a lot better to do that. The resilience, the
00:27:04character, the storyline, Paisley's puzzling tonight, it's absolutely fantastic for everyone
00:27:08involved. But we know that there's probably seven players there who are much, much better
00:27:13than what we showed tonight on the ball. We didn't have the ownership we wanted, we didn't
00:27:17buy the passes we wanted. And by the way, let's credit the brand as well, the press
00:27:20was incredible at times. But I'd rather them make mistakes on the ball than panic on it.
00:27:25We've got absolutely nothing to lose. They should come, they should beat us, they should
00:27:28have beat us, but they didn't. So it tells you how far St Mirren have come.
00:27:32Yeah, absolutely. What do you make of Steven Robinson's comments? Can the Saints produce
00:27:37a little miracle over there? A little bit of magic? And of course, they'll be training,
00:27:42they'll have played a game over the weekend. And again, that match fitness will maybe give
00:27:47them the opportunity to cause SK Bran some problems.
00:27:50OK, Scottish Premiership this weekend. Let's have a look at the fixtures to see exactly
00:27:55what you can look forward to. Rangers against Motherwell, Ross County Dundee United, Dundee
00:28:00against Hearts, Hibbs against Celtic, Aberdeen St Mirren and Kilmarnock against St Johnstone.
00:28:07That's what's on offer. You can give us your prediction on it. We'll certainly be offering
00:28:11you our prediction shortly. But before we get into the meat and bones of Hampden and
00:28:15Rangers against Motherwell, here are the news headlines.
00:28:19Welcome to your daily news update brought to you by Arnold Clarke. I'm Patrick and here's
00:28:23your top stories on the 9th of August. Bobby Wells snatched a last-minute equaliser for
00:28:29Kilmarnock last night in their UEFA Conference League qualifier, which kept the tie level
00:28:33heading into the second leg. Speaking after the game, Derek McInnes praised his side's
00:28:38mentality to push till the end. I think we've been a bit harsh with that, but great spirit,
00:28:42great determination. You always remember how a game finishes. I think they think the game's
00:28:46won. It's what we'll look forward to next Thursday.
00:28:49St Mirren also left it late to secure a 1-1 draw against Norwegian's side. Brand one player
00:28:54to be without in the second leg is Tiosi Olasanya, and while Steven Robertson wasn't best pleased.
00:29:00It looked like the goalkeeper ran into him. I get booked for stepping outside my box,
00:29:06but this is European football. They're clever with what they do.
00:29:11And in some transfer news, Bojan Mioski looks set to seal his exit from Aberdeen, as reports
00:29:16suggest he's been in talks with La Liga side Girona. Could he be making the move over to
00:29:21Spain? That's all of your headlines, brought to you by Arnold Clark.
00:29:52Great surface, great environment. I see they've put the Rangers branding all outside Hamden,
00:29:59so the supporters will go along there. It's something new for them. I don't think excited
00:30:05is the right word, but I think they'll go along there and I think the playing surface
00:30:09will suit Rangers. The size of the park will suit Rangers. Obviously Motherwell are saying
00:30:14they've got a few injuries, so for me it's just all about Rangers tomorrow.
00:30:18Yeah, of course it's early days. Home game's not exactly ideal for them in this ground,
00:30:25but it's a brilliant playing surface.
00:30:28Yeah, I think it'll be a great novelty for a lot of Rangers supporters who have never
00:30:31been to Hamden as a home team with a full stadium. Usually it's semi-finals, finals
00:30:35with half the crowd, so I think it'll be great. I think the players will enjoy it.
00:30:40Listen to Proof we'll be in the pudding, Peter. If they go there and win every game at Hamden
00:30:45they'll think, brilliant, might want to stay here. If they struggle, then they'll be desperate
00:30:49to get back to Ibrox as soon as possible. But again, I had a look at their fixtures,
00:30:53they've got a few home games coming up that they should win, including this one tomorrow.
00:30:57OK, let's get the thoughts of Philippe Clement. Patrick Mullen was out there to see what was
00:31:02happening in the Rangers' camp.
00:31:03Rangers will move into their new temporary home tomorrow when they take on Motherwell
00:31:07at Hamden Park. The move comes while Ibrox is being renovated, but Philippe Clement
00:31:12explained this afternoon that for him, Hamden Park, well, it's the best-case scenario,
00:31:16given the circumstances.
00:31:18Yeah, I've been involved in that, about choices to make, and it was for me the best scenario.
00:31:26And not only for the players, for sure also for the fans, because we need to think about that.
00:31:31And that was for me also a priority, that they could feel in a way at home, not travelling
00:31:39much more than it is now. It's not a big difference. It's a little bit different maybe
00:31:45for people, but not a big difference. It would have been different if it was at Moray Field,
00:31:50or it would have been in a big stadium in England, for example, where also other possibilities.
00:31:58So I'm really happy that the club could find a solution.
00:32:02Rangers head into the Motherwell game in between that crucial Champions League qualifier against
00:32:08In the first leg, it was Vaclav Cerny that impressed the majority of the fans.
00:32:12But speaking today, Philippe Clement said, well, the new winger isn't quite ready for his
00:32:16first Premiership start.
00:32:18Vaclav, like I said, I think he had six trainings now. We don't know.
00:32:23So it was before four weeks in holiday. So for him, it's like pre-season.
00:32:28So people cannot expect him to play 90 minutes for the moment, although he would love to do.
00:32:33It's Rangers versus Motherwell at Hampden Stadium tomorrow.
00:32:36It kicks off at 3pm and PLZ Soccer will be there live, keeping you up to date.
00:32:41Yeah, so there you are, Patrick just giving us the inside track.
00:32:45And of course, Cerny's just slowly but surely got to be eased into this team.
00:32:51But I'll tell you, looks good. I thought his ball in for Desser's equaliser against Dynamo Kiev was top drawer.
00:32:58Yeah, you could see a wee bit of experience. The boys shut him down.
00:33:02But he was smart enough to get it onto his left foot and put a quality ball in.
00:33:06So yeah, I think Rangers supporters will be looking at the players that are coming in
00:33:10and expecting them to be ready starters. But we'll have to wait and see how long that takes.
00:33:15Yeah, if you're going to predict a game at the weekend, this might be the easiest one to predict
00:33:19because Motherwell are missing eight first team players.
00:33:23Sam Nicholson, Callum Slattery, Harry Payton, Johnny Ketrumbis, Filip Stuparevic, Shane Blaney and Ross Callaghan are all out.
00:33:34So, he's got his problems. 0-0 last week, now Rangers at Hampden.
00:33:39Yeah, I think even going to play Rangers with a full team is difficult enough.
00:33:43But with that amount of injuries early in the season, it's going to be really, really difficult for Motherwell.
00:33:48Listen, they went to Ibrox last season, towards the end of the season, and won.
00:33:52So, they're capable of beating Rangers, but I just think the players have got out.
00:33:57Plus, Theo Bale even leaves a big hole in their attack.
00:34:00And I think Rangers should win this game comfortably and build on a good performance during the week.
00:34:05Yeah, it's a tall order for Motherwell.
00:34:08Sometimes you get fans who'll cut you some slack because they realise the pressures you're under.
00:34:14But the last thing Stuart Kettlewell wants again is...
00:34:17Do you remember that run last season when they just couldn't buy a win?
00:34:20And then all of a sudden people are thinking he's next for the sack because that's the way we go about our business.
00:34:27Yeah, well, Tam's already touched on it.
00:34:29They lost three of their best players at the end of the season.
00:34:32The Motherwell supporters will be waiting to see if they have been replaced.
00:34:37And we'll throw their trumpingsworth into the team.
00:34:40The injuries that you're saying they've got there and then having to go to Hamden...
00:34:44I think Rangers will be firing on all cylinders getting the draw in midweek.
00:34:49They'll be buzzing. Every player that they've brought in will want to be playing.
00:34:53Particularly when you're winning games, everybody wants to take part.
00:34:56So, I think it's one-way traffic again tomorrow.
00:34:59Yeah, I'm going four-nil Rangers, Ruffy.
00:35:01I'm going to go three.
00:35:02Three-nil?
00:35:03Three-nil Rangers for me.
00:35:04Okay, you two in it together.
00:35:06I take it you're not expecting Stuart Kettlewell at any point after going with that prediction?
00:35:10Well, to be fair, by the way...
00:35:11Four-nothing's a hammering.
00:35:13Four-nothing's a hammering, but it's happening.
00:35:15Has he got eight players out injured, Peter?
00:35:17Well, you see managers. I don't mean him.
00:35:19But managers like to paint a desperate picture.
00:35:24And then all of a sudden, oh, there's four of them playing.
00:35:27You've said four-nil, Stuart Kettlewell.
00:35:30And you've said he's lying about injuries.
00:35:32No, I never said that.
00:35:33I think you're going to get him back in, Peter.
00:35:34I think we'll get him back in.
00:35:35We'll certainly get him back in before the Daily Record.
00:35:37Get him back in for you and Jacko on your new show.
00:35:40And don't forget, you can join the two of them together.
00:35:43It's called Sleepy Hollow.
00:35:45The two of them just nattering to each other.
00:35:47Holding each other's hand.
00:35:51That's the joy, Ruffy.
00:35:53Honestly.
00:35:54You can just leather your watermouth.
00:35:56When's it on?
00:35:57I'll send you a link.
00:35:58I'll send you a link.
00:35:59I think it's on seven till two minutes past seven.
00:36:03Every night with Tam and Jacko.
00:36:05So, anyway, apart from...
00:36:08Listen, he can't mourn.
00:36:10We've given him a right good punt at it.
00:36:12Let's move to him against Celtic.
00:36:15Now, this is interesting because, obviously,
00:36:18I think if you have just joined us
00:36:20and you haven't heard the news,
00:36:21Callum McGregor has decided to retire
00:36:24from international football.
00:36:26Of course, you'll have your own view on him.
00:36:28Certainly in the last three or four years,
00:36:30I think he's been the best midfielder in Scotland
00:36:32by an absolute country mile.
00:36:34Brendan Rodgers, as you would imagine
00:36:36and as you would expect,
00:36:38very complimentary about his captain.
00:36:40This was his comment today on Callum.
00:36:44From a Celtic perspective, it's really good news.
00:36:46I think you all know the number of games that he plays.
00:36:48He never has a day off, ever.
00:36:50Now all his focus can be on Celtic.
00:36:52And I think that's one of the other things
00:36:54that probably, you know, is...
00:36:57I think you touched on it, Tam,
00:36:59but, Ruffey, here is a player
00:37:01who has relentlessly played
00:37:04over the last three or four years.
00:37:06You know, 60, 70 games.
00:37:08Constantly, every minute of the game.
00:37:10Slowly but surely, Brendan Rodgers started to...
00:37:13Maybe even Ange Poster Coggley would take him off
00:37:15the odd time if the game was done and dusted.
00:37:17But he was non-stop every week.
00:37:19Oh, there's no doubt about it.
00:37:21Any Celtic supporter, as soon as they go in there
00:37:23and they look at the team lines, they expect him to be on it.
00:37:25It was fairly noticeable last year
00:37:27when he wasn't on it.
00:37:29Celtic struggled a wee bit.
00:37:31Even one man coming out of that Celtic team,
00:37:33he just showed how much he means to the team.
00:37:35Pulls the strings.
00:37:37You know, and as you said there,
00:37:3990 minutes every week.
00:37:41You know, and it just...
00:37:43It just bleeds Celtic.
00:37:45You know, he's been there since he was a ball boy.
00:37:47He's come up all the way.
00:37:49He's another Scott Brown.
00:37:51They just want to play as many games as they can
00:37:53for their team.
00:37:55And if meaning not playing for Scotland
00:37:57means he can get another, maybe a year,
00:37:59playing with Celtic, then that's what he'll be thinking about.
00:38:01Yeah. Now, the good thing
00:38:03is that it's another week.
00:38:05There's more players come in
00:38:07from your old team at Hibs.
00:38:09And boy, does he need them.
00:38:11Nicky Caddon's come in, which is the twin of
00:38:13Chris Caddon.
00:38:15And also, I think, Junior Hoylett
00:38:17is another addition.
00:38:19He needs more. How many more do you think, Tam?
00:38:21Possibly
00:38:23a centre-midfield player.
00:38:25Maybe a wee bit of creativity.
00:38:27And I'd say maybe
00:38:29a wee bit of
00:38:31cover at centre-half. I think they're light, but
00:38:33listen, I think that's him now, brought in
00:38:35two centre-halves, a goalkeeper,
00:38:37you know, two wingers, two strikers.
00:38:39So, he's starting to get players in, Peter,
00:38:41which were badly needed.
00:38:43I think the result of the weekend,
00:38:45I think the players who were sitting in the sidelines
00:38:47like your Hoyletts and your Caddons must have been thinking
00:38:49am I going to get that wee extra bit of money I was looking for?
00:38:51Because Hibs might push the panic button
00:38:53after losing the first game 3-0. That's what happens.
00:38:55And they got three or four in right away
00:38:57this week. So, listen, I think
00:38:59they've strengthened the squad. I think Nicky Caddon
00:39:01always liked him, him and Junior Hoylett.
00:39:03Two decent wide players,
00:39:05I think Junior Hoylett will be a really good signing.
00:39:07I was impressed with him at Aberdeen last season
00:39:09and surprised that he didn't sign a new deal
00:39:11with them. So, we just have
00:39:13to wait and see. Obviously, Ciaran Bowie's come in as well.
00:39:15Four-year deal. Peter from Fulham, young Scottish
00:39:17player who went down to
00:39:19Fulham from Wraith Rovers
00:39:21early on in his career. He's back up.
00:39:23Good experience in League One in England.
00:39:25So, I think the squad is there now
00:39:27and it's up to David to get the best out of them.
00:39:29Is it noticeable that
00:39:31we're not talking about Martin Boyle?
00:39:33You haven't mentioned Martin Boyle since the start
00:39:35of the season. Isn't it funny this carry-on
00:39:37with going back to Australia
00:39:39and all that's got any effect on him at all?
00:39:41Because, I mean,
00:39:43last year, the year before, star man.
00:39:45Week in, week out. It's not
00:39:47been noticeable that he's playing that kind of
00:39:49whether it's a new style of play
00:39:51that they're playing. They're not getting the ball to him wide enough.
00:39:53But, certainly, we haven't been
00:39:55he's done nothing so far.
00:39:57I think they're too reliable on him, Peter.
00:39:59I think everything needs to go through Martin Boyle.
00:40:01I think teams just think to themselves, listen, if we stop
00:40:03Martin Boyle, Hibs have not got a lot else.
00:40:05So, that's why they've brought in another two wide players
00:40:07and two strikers. Because they want to see more
00:40:09in the forward areas.
00:40:11I think John Ewell is the one
00:40:13class act they've had in the midfield area.
00:40:15But, as you say,
00:40:17it's just one or two players.
00:40:19The rest of the supporting cast,
00:40:21the back line was giving away
00:40:23goals non-stop.
00:40:25That's the area that I think needs
00:40:27the biggest surgery.
00:40:29Get that back line sorted out.
00:40:31Stop losing goals.
00:40:33I mean, 3-0 against St Mirren.
00:40:35One of the goals was farcical.
00:40:37Yeah, but they've brought in two centre-halves, Peter.
00:40:39Good experience. And they've brought in a goalkeeper
00:40:41as well. So, that was the first couple of weeks
00:40:43of the window. I think David Graves went in and said
00:40:45definitely, first things first, we need to get
00:40:47two centre-halves and a goalkeeper in.
00:40:49They've done that. They've added the different pieces in the forward
00:40:51areas.
00:40:53Luke McEwan, they're still looking to try
00:40:55and sign him. He would be great, wouldn't he?
00:40:57He would be great, but speaking to Stuart Taylor last night,
00:40:59I think Hibs will need to pony up some more money
00:41:01if he's to go to Eastwood.
00:41:03I think there's interest in him in England as well.
00:41:05I think Dundee, if they get the right offer,
00:41:07will probably sell him.
00:41:09I think Hibs are obviously in for him, but they'll need
00:41:11to pay more money than they've offered so far.
00:41:13I'd love him to stay in Scotland,
00:41:15that's for sure. David Gray, no surprise,
00:41:17wants a reaction after last week's
00:41:19defeat.
00:41:21Regardless of who the next opponent is,
00:41:23I think we've seen that from the weekend.
00:41:25I think,
00:41:27and what I said was unacceptable was,
00:41:29especially on reflection looking back, the second half
00:41:31performance. It's very hard to take any
00:41:33positives from the game because the result
00:41:35overshadows the performance
00:41:37straight away for obvious reasons,
00:41:39but we know we needed to be better, the second half
00:41:41especially, and that's been the full focus
00:41:43this week, to make sure we get a reaction
00:41:45and there's no better way to do that than to
00:41:47come and test yourself on what should be
00:41:49a great day at Easter Road.
00:41:51Yeah, and actually,
00:41:53full marks to Hibs because
00:41:55they unveiled
00:41:57yesterday the bust
00:41:59of five, the famous five.
00:42:01All five of them were commissioned
00:42:03by a sculptor
00:42:05and
00:42:07it was just,
00:42:09they looked fantastic,
00:42:11all five of them. Can you name all five?
00:42:13Eh, really?
00:42:15Yep.
00:42:17We,
00:42:19Bobby Johnson, Willie Ormond,
00:42:21the good looking guy.
00:42:23Turnbull Smith.
00:42:25Turnbull Smith, aye? Yeah, there you are.
00:42:27Gordon Smith. I know the Hibs history, Ruffey obviously
00:42:29doesn't, even though he's in the Hall of Fame.
00:42:31Harrison for you, not knowing that.
00:42:33To be fair,
00:42:35you know, you don't get
00:42:37a chance to know all your Hall of Fame
00:42:39teammates if you're in there, do you?
00:42:41You're just kind of a milling around
00:42:43signing things all the time, aren't you?
00:42:45Yeah, and then obviously when you've been to
00:42:47three World Cups, you get your own cup.
00:42:49Yeah, absolutely as well.
00:42:51I was waiting there and
00:42:53I don't know if you've noticed, did
00:42:55somebody give you this or did you get it? Yeah, somebody sent
00:42:57me. I'd like to thank them very much,
00:42:59whoever it was who makes them.
00:43:01It's fantastic, by the way.
00:43:03Well, if you'd been Tam, you'd have known
00:43:05and then you'd have mentioned the name on
00:43:07the programme so that you'd have got your cup.
00:43:09It's a random person that gave you that?
00:43:11Just came through the post, these things happen.
00:43:13Still nice, isn't it? Yeah, it's lovely.
00:43:15Two fantastic photographs of you, Ruffey,
00:43:17in the early days when you were...
00:43:19That's just weird, somebody sending a random mug.
00:43:21It's a bit weird. You get fans
00:43:23when you're in the Hall of Fame, Tam. People actually
00:43:25like you, but if you move
00:43:27around so many clubs, people just
00:43:29don't get a chance to get to know you.
00:43:31Any Rochester Rhinos fans watching now?
00:43:35And on the back of that, a big hello to you
00:43:37truckers out there as well.
00:43:39There's more chances somebody from there sending us.
00:43:41Anyway,
00:43:43well done, Ruffey.
00:43:45Hibs Celtic?
00:43:47Tam's going to tell us that Celtic
00:43:49struggle at Hibs now and again.
00:43:51I don't think they'll struggle this time.
00:43:53I think the first
00:43:55half performance against St. Bern was reasonable,
00:43:57but the goals they lost
00:43:59were comical. Not in the Mall, but the
00:44:01first one St. Bern won was good.
00:44:03Celtic had 82%
00:44:05possession last week.
00:44:07When I was watching the game,
00:44:09at one stage of the game, Scales and
00:44:11Kurt Vickers were 30 yards
00:44:13at the opposition's box.
00:44:15That's how much they pressed in
00:44:17and couldn't get out.
00:44:19They just couldn't get out at all. I think it'll be
00:44:21the same tomorrow. I think
00:44:23they have too much movement, too much pace.
00:44:25I think Hibs could be the
00:44:27end of 3-0.
00:44:29Is that a comfortable 3-0 battering?
00:44:31No, no. I think Hibs
00:44:33will put up a show at some stage of the game.
00:44:35Clearly not.
00:44:37Probably the first half, but the three goals
00:44:39will go in at the same time.
00:44:41I agree with you, Ruffey.
00:44:43I think the way Celtic have started the season,
00:44:45the pre-season's gone well.
00:44:47I think the manager's managed to get
00:44:49his message across
00:44:51to the squad
00:44:53that he has. I think they're
00:44:55playing really, really well
00:44:57and everybody seems to be buying in
00:44:59to the way he wants to play now.
00:45:01I can see them defeating Hibs
00:45:033-0.
00:45:05I disagree, Peter. I think Hibs
00:45:07have ran Celtic very close at Easter Road
00:45:09in recent seasons. I think the
00:45:11addition of the three or four players I've brought
00:45:13in this week will give the whole squad a lift.
00:45:15I still think Celtic
00:45:17will just have too much, but I think it'll be a close game.
00:45:19All the games at Easter Road have been close
00:45:21recent times, so I'll go Celtic to nick
00:45:23it 2-1, but I think Hibs will put in a good performance.
00:45:25OK, we'll hold you to that.
00:45:27Dundee against Hearts.
00:45:29Hearts, buoyant by the fact that
00:45:31Steven Ace has got that new deal,
00:45:33but of course also excited
00:45:35by the fact that you
00:45:37have new players in.
00:45:39Players on the bench that can come on
00:45:41and make a difference. Heldrangers to a 0-0.
00:45:43So clearly
00:45:45all things looking good
00:45:47and I wouldn't rule out them
00:45:49I mean, Tam thinks Lauren Shanklin
00:45:51will stay. I wouldn't rule out
00:45:53them adding maybe
00:45:55one or two others before the window closes.
00:45:57I think Hearts were comfortable last year.
00:45:59Third in the league. A breath of fresh
00:46:01air. Never got near
00:46:03the second place
00:46:05Heldrangers. I think this year the
00:46:07expectations will be to try and get a wee bit
00:46:09closer. But I think Dens Park,
00:46:11as they proved last year, is going to be a tough
00:46:13place to go to. Anybody going
00:46:15down there will have to play particularly well
00:46:17to get away with three points.
00:46:19I think if Hearts are going to continue
00:46:21to be that dominant third
00:46:23team, they'll have to go
00:46:25to Dens and win and get
00:46:27three points.
00:46:29Last week it was the Dundee derby. It was great
00:46:31to watch. Great excitement. Both
00:46:33sides having a go on the
00:46:35front foot. Do you know what was refreshing about it, Tam?
00:46:37Watching two teams and
00:46:39the only thing on their mind was to play the ball forward.
00:46:41Pass the ball forward.
00:46:43The pitch was magnificent at Tanneryce.
00:46:45I was sitting in the press
00:46:47box thinking, this is
00:46:49a joy. If only this could be what
00:46:51we're watching week in, week
00:46:53out. Yeah, I think it's
00:46:55always been a really good derby. Even going back
00:46:57to the times I played. I think it was a 2-1.
00:46:59The two games I played. There's been
00:47:01lots of goals in this fixture, Peter.
00:47:03I think both teams went out to try and win the game.
00:47:05If you've got two teams who believe they
00:47:07can win the game and they both
00:47:09attack each other, you get an open game.
00:47:11You don't get that if one team thinks
00:47:13we need to sit in. So both teams need to take
00:47:15great credit for going for it.
00:47:17Two each was probably a fair result.
00:47:19It's a totally different game now.
00:47:21The high and the atmosphere of that, coming back
00:47:23at home to play a strong Hearts
00:47:25team. I think
00:47:27there'll be goals in this as well. I think Hearts might nick it.
00:47:293-2 in a thriller.
00:47:31I think Dundee have got goals in them but I'm not convinced of them
00:47:33at the back. Yeah, it's an interesting
00:47:35point you make. Tony Daugherty,
00:47:37just on reflection, as he
00:47:39prepares for the visit of Hearts, reckons
00:47:41that some of his players get caught up in the
00:47:43whole hype around that
00:47:45derby. The important bit, from
00:47:47my point of view, is to make sure that the
00:47:49players are laser-focused in the game.
00:47:51They can't get caught up in any of the
00:47:53surroundings. I thought we suffered a little bit
00:47:55from that last
00:47:57week. So it's important that we just focus on the game.
00:47:59We've been working all week on a game plan
00:48:01and we've identified in Hearts
00:48:03they've got a lot of strengths
00:48:05but they've also got weaknesses. So it's important that we
00:48:07negate the strengths
00:48:09and exploit the weaknesses. And if we do that
00:48:11and we carry out that game plan, we'll give ourselves
00:48:13every chance of taking points.
00:48:15Interesting times.
00:48:17He's done his homework. Will it be enough?
00:48:19Give us your thoughts on it. Regarding
00:48:21Hearts, they're going to be holding talks with Cammy Devlin
00:48:23and Xander Clark about
00:48:25extending their contracts.
00:48:27Kosuke Tagawa has left to
00:48:29join J League side, Kishima
00:48:31Antlers. Didn't
00:48:33quite set their head on fire. Three goals,
00:48:3521 games. He's off.
00:48:37There could be a few more out the door.
00:48:39How much did they get for him?
00:48:41For the boy Tagawa from the
00:48:43Kishima Antlers?
00:48:45Was he dear?
00:48:47Was he dear? No.
00:48:49Let's move on. I knew it was
00:48:51coming. I could see it going and I'm thinking,
00:48:53where is he going with this? How is he going to ram
00:48:55in this pun?
00:48:57But he's managed to do it.
00:48:59Anyway, and don't forget you can hear
00:49:01more of those puns on his new show
00:49:03when he leaves us.
00:49:07By the way, a Hearts
00:49:09fan says Ryan Jack's not good enough for Hearts.
00:49:11Really?
00:49:13I think he's good enough for Hearts.
00:49:15Illusions of grandeur at Hearts ready.
00:49:17You look at the players Hearts have got in there.
00:49:19They've got Danda in there, the wee boy
00:49:21Devlin. They're quite busy players.
00:49:23I don't know where he
00:49:25would fit into the way that they're trying to play.
00:49:27I'm not saying they're after him.
00:49:29I'm just saying he's available.
00:49:31Where do you play him?
00:49:33I think he's good enough and I think he can make an impact.
00:49:35Listen, we'll wait
00:49:37and see. I think
00:49:39Hearts are going to win it 2-1. 3-2 for me.
00:49:413-2 Hearts. 2-1 Hearts.
00:49:43Aberdeen against St Merton.
00:49:45This could be interesting. Obviously
00:49:47the Dons managed to defeat
00:49:49St Johnson by two goals
00:49:51to one.
00:49:53I'm not going to say this is
00:49:55the change
00:49:57in Aberdeen.
00:49:59Because we've seen
00:50:01I'm not saying
00:50:03false Don, Don of a new era.
00:50:05You name it. I'm just saying
00:50:07I just can't
00:50:09envisage that massive change.
00:50:11It has to happen, Peter.
00:50:13I don't think the Aberdeen supporters
00:50:15will suffer another year.
00:50:17The manager has done well since they came in.
00:50:19They've got reasonable results.
00:50:21I think he has to send the Aberdeen fans
00:50:23away with a big smile on their face tomorrow.
00:50:25I think he's got to set his stall out
00:50:27right away.
00:50:29The fans have got to go away saying
00:50:31we're going to be top six this year.
00:50:33Aberdeen supporters will probably
00:50:35be looking for a third or fourth.
00:50:37These are the games he's got to win.
00:50:39The other thing about it as well is
00:50:41they'll need to move quickly if Mioski
00:50:43heads out the door to try and get
00:50:45something that's going to excite the fans.
00:50:47I'm sure they've got the players
00:50:49and the irons in the fire in terms of strikers
00:50:51to come in, Peter. I think they've always known
00:50:53they're going to lose them at some point.
00:50:55Staying beyond this window, I think there's
00:50:57too many clubs in for him. There's so much interest.
00:50:59Aberdeen will just be trying to get a bidding war
00:51:01to get as big a fee as possible.
00:51:03It'll be a huge, huge miss for them.
00:51:05He scored 20 plus goals last season and they were dire.
00:51:07If you put him on a good side,
00:51:09I think he scores a lot of goals.
00:51:11I think that Aberdeen,
00:51:13in the evidence of the St Johnstone game
00:51:15on Monday night, Peter looked a decent outfit.
00:51:17They've signed a lot of players
00:51:19and they're playing a high press and they're getting after teams.
00:51:21I would expect them to play
00:51:23to beat a St Mirren team
00:51:25who could possibly be tired after doing a lot of running
00:51:27last night
00:51:29in that game against Bergen.
00:51:31They had to cover a lot of ground and I think they'll
00:51:33take advantage of that and win that comfortably 2-0.
00:51:35Michael Taylor says,
00:51:372-0 to the Dons. McGrath the first goal scorer,
00:51:39who knows, couldn't rule it out.
00:51:41I'm going to go 1-1,
00:51:43because I think St Mirren
00:51:45off the back of that result,
00:51:47they just look like
00:51:49a well-oiled outfit
00:51:51who completely understand
00:51:53the manager's
00:51:55instructions,
00:51:57but I think the five or six players
00:51:59that he was talking about that couldn't
00:52:01quite lay a glove on Bran will need to turn up.
00:52:03I think
00:52:05obviously St Mirren will make a goal of it,
00:52:07but I think the whole buzz about Aberdeen
00:52:09being up there, the supporters,
00:52:11I think it would need enough of a full stadium
00:52:13and that's one of the reasons why I think they have to win.
00:52:15I think they've got players
00:52:17that have shown to the start of the season
00:52:19that they will win,
00:52:21and I'm going to go Aberdeen 2-0.
00:52:23Okay, Killie against
00:52:25St Johnstone,
00:52:27Kilmarnock will have to produce something
00:52:29I hope in Europe next week,
00:52:31but they're up against a St Johnstone side that I think
00:52:33are going to be
00:52:35relegated. There you are, I've said it.
00:52:37I think they'll be
00:52:39stuffy. I think St Johnstone
00:52:41will try and sit in
00:52:43and try and take anything they can away from home.
00:52:45At home,
00:52:47the problem, as we all know, is strikers
00:52:49scoring goals. It hasn't happened.
00:52:51I just think
00:52:53Kilmarnock have got more goal power
00:52:55in their team.
00:52:57If the wee boy Armstrong's fit, healed,
00:52:59cause a few damage.
00:53:01There's only one winner for me and that's Kilmarnock.
00:53:03I'm going to go Kilmarnock as well.
00:53:05Narrow win, Peter.
00:53:071-0.
00:53:09Adam Webb who says
00:53:11the booze ban in Scottish football
00:53:13is irrational and clubs are being
00:53:15handcuffed by the law.
00:53:17You can drink at matches.
00:53:19The hospitality
00:53:21allows quite a number of
00:53:23fans to have a drink.
00:53:25You just can't get it on
00:53:27the kiosks the way we
00:53:29were able to in English
00:53:31football when we were watching
00:53:33a few games. You took full advantage
00:53:35of it. You were absolutely plastered.
00:53:39I think that's something
00:53:41that I think is a good point.
00:53:43He said they're handcuffed by the law.
00:53:45It's one law for one set of fans and another
00:53:47law for others.
00:53:49I'm not surprised that there's an American owner coming over.
00:53:51I think you've heard that from every American owner
00:53:53that's come over here. I think Ron Gordon
00:53:55was the same at Hibs.
00:53:57It's so regular
00:53:59over in American soccer.
00:54:01When I was playing over there, people sit at the game
00:54:03and have a beer. You go up and buy a hot dog,
00:54:05you buy a beer. That's all sports.
00:54:07That's not just football. That's baseball,
00:54:09American football, everything.
00:54:11He's come over and went,
00:54:13you can't get a drink at the games. Why?
00:54:15Obviously he's not seen the running pitch battles
00:54:17in 1981
00:54:19with Celtic Rangers which
00:54:21obviously the booze ban came into effect
00:54:23after that. It is 44 years ago.
00:54:25People should be trusted
00:54:27to have a beer but
00:54:29unfortunately we live in a country where
00:54:31we just can't really trust people to do it.
00:54:33We must be near
00:54:35a trial period.
00:54:37We must be near challenging it.
00:54:39That's what I'm saying. We must have a trial.
00:54:41Let's have
00:54:43a season to see how it goes and see
00:54:45if people can behave themselves.
00:54:47The stumbling block is the police. The police will not
00:54:49handle any trouble at all.
00:54:51Any trouble at any of the games
00:54:53is drink. But with all due respect
00:54:55Ruffey, they should challenge
00:54:57it and say you cannot
00:54:59have a situation where everybody can go to
00:55:01Murrayfield and have a right good bevy
00:55:03but you can't go to a match and have a pint.
00:55:05If you break the law,
00:55:07you break the law. You're arrested.
00:55:09You suffer the consequences.
00:55:11I agree Peter.
00:55:13People should be trusted but it will just be a small element
00:55:15that maybe lets it down.
00:55:17I'm sure we agree
00:55:19with Ruffey. Let's try it out and see
00:55:21because it will bring more revenue into
00:55:23Scottish football. Absolutely.
00:55:25Ross County v Dundee United to finish guys.
00:55:27It was 0-0.
00:55:29It was a terrible game. I watched that match
00:55:31as well.
00:55:33Not great. Not too
00:55:35excited by what Ross County
00:55:37have to offer at the moment. Dundee United
00:55:39surprised me Ruffey.
00:55:41Because of all the mumping and moaning about Jim Goodman
00:55:43I was going up there thinking they were going
00:55:45to be terrible to watch but they were
00:55:47really good. I think Ross County
00:55:49are always difficult up
00:55:51there at home in particular.
00:55:53It's the beginning of the season. They've already got a point
00:55:55under their belt
00:55:57so I think they'll put up a good show.
00:55:59I don't think they'll beat Dundee United but I think they'll be good
00:56:01enough to get another point.
00:56:03I think Dundee United will win it 1-0.
00:56:05I think the goals in this Peter. I was impressed with Dundee United
00:56:07in the derby. I thought in the
00:56:09forward areas particularly Trapanovsky
00:56:11looked different class and I think they'll go up there
00:56:13and win that 3-1.
00:56:15Miller Thompson looked good as well.
00:56:17They've certainly got a lot
00:56:19more pace and power. It was a
00:56:21totally transformed team from the championship team.
00:56:23Bar the back three
00:56:25the midfield and the forward line was drastically
00:56:27changed from that championship team.
00:56:29I think they look better. On our feed
00:56:31James says Dundee United 2-0.
00:56:35One of our other
00:56:37viewers has mentioned
00:56:39exactly Peter, you commit a crime
00:56:41somewhere you should get lifted.
00:56:43You shouldn't punish fans because
00:56:45of the sport they choose
00:56:47to watch.
00:56:49You can obviously have booze
00:56:51here in Holland as well.
00:56:53Yeah, you can have it all over the place.
00:56:55It's just
00:56:57this country. We need to take a more
00:56:59responsible outlook on it
00:57:01and give the football fans the chance
00:57:03to have a drink. Everything in moderation
00:57:05to be honest with you.
00:57:07Which is what I was appealing to him that night
00:57:09at Anfield. I said look Tam
00:57:11this is your sixth red wine.
00:57:13You did get hospitality Peter which was
00:57:15free drinks. I've got to take advantage
00:57:17of it. Absolutely.
00:57:19My interview after the game will live long in the memory
00:57:21where you asked me about the game
00:57:23and I didn't even know who was playing.
00:57:25Where I was.
00:57:27Anyway,
00:57:29just quickly before we go
00:57:31Down South, Charity Shield,
00:57:33Man City, Man United. Are United better
00:57:35this season after that vote
00:57:37of confidence for Ten Hag? I think they have
00:57:39to be better. Will they be
00:57:41better enough to take
00:57:43Man City?
00:57:45They've still got their quality players. That was amazing
00:57:47amount of money they got for
00:57:49I'm going to try and pronounce his name.
00:57:5182 million.
00:57:53Unbelievable. One of these
00:57:55big clubs throw at each other.
00:57:57Incredible. I think he wanted a new challenge
00:57:59apparently and of course it helps
00:58:01City when they have to duck and dive on the
00:58:03financial fear of play.
00:58:05Okay
00:58:07Charity Shield.
00:58:09Give us a scoreline.
00:58:11Man City 2-0.
00:58:13I'm going to go 2-1 to Man United.
00:58:15Simply because you've seen the FA Cup final
00:58:17I think Ten Hag knows how to play them and they've got pace
00:58:19on the counter attack to
00:58:21get in behind that
00:58:23City back line.
00:58:25I'll go with City to win 2-1.
00:58:27Just a footnote, Lee Carsley, interim
00:58:29England manager.
00:58:31He was appointed by the Republic of Ireland. He's been with the
00:58:33under-21s at England.
00:58:35He's got a little run of
00:58:37games that he'll be in charge until
00:58:39they decide who's getting it full time.
00:58:41I think this was always in the cards, Peter.
00:58:43I think it was heavily linked to Ireland and I think he knocked that
00:58:45job back because we obviously
00:58:47had a vested interest in that job with Neil.
00:58:49We were looking to see the runners and riders
00:58:51because we'd put a lot of money on Neil to get that job
00:58:53which unfortunately he didn't. I think Lee
00:58:55was always thinking to himself
00:58:57if Gareth Southgate leaves, I could be in it.
00:58:59He'd done a fantastic job with the under-21s.
00:59:01I think they won the Euros
00:59:03or the Under-21 World Cup. I think it was the Euros.
00:59:05He's very highly rated with English
00:59:07FA so I'm not surprised
00:59:09that he's in there. That's a job he's been waiting for.
00:59:11Thank you
00:59:13to so many of you
00:59:15for your comments.
00:59:17Some of them positive, some of them negative.
00:59:19I like to take everything on the chin.
00:59:21One comment says
00:59:23Tam, you're right, as a Scotsman
00:59:25if there's free drink, it's an obligation
00:59:27to go there and have a
00:59:29good night out. You didn't cause any trouble
00:59:31to be fair to you.
00:59:33I'm a happy drunk.
00:59:35As he swayed down the Anfield Road
00:59:37just bumping into
00:59:39cars, he seemed happy
00:59:41enough so I just let him go.
00:59:43Still doesn't
00:59:45beat you and Maggie in a night out.
00:59:47It's quite early.
00:59:49Five or six would be early enough
00:59:51to open the cocktail bar.
00:59:53Absolutely.
00:59:55Once you two get the champers.
00:59:57Listen, have a great weekend.
00:59:59Go out and support Scottish football.
