00:00Welcome to the football show on PLZ Soccer's YouTube channel.
00:09I'm Peter Martin, Alan Ruff and Tamek Manas are here with me and we're
00:13delighted to be back for the new season.
00:15It's Monday and by the time we head all the way through to the Friday,
00:20hopefully we'll get quite a bit of engagement from you and what you
00:24think about your favourite team, their signings, the players that have
00:27headed out the door and those new faces coming in the door.
00:30We want to hear from you.
00:32Don't forget to hit the subscribe button on our YouTube channel.
00:35If you download the app, you'll get all the breaking news at your fingertips.
00:38Ruffie, it's hard to believe it.
00:40Summer isn't over, but we've had a well-earned break.
00:45Certainly have. It's too long.
00:46I keep saying that every year.
00:48I mean, you enjoy it when you get it, but then as the day's going,
00:51you want to go back and you want to start talking about the football
00:54and what you've been missing.
00:55Yeah, absolutely.
00:56Over the summer, though, it was good though, Tam,
00:58because we had the European Championships to look forward to.
01:02And in some ways, I thought there was a lot of games that disappointed.
01:07And amazingly, without starting off in a kind of an anti-English campaign,
01:14but I thought England had an easy run all the way to the final.
01:16And then eventually they got their comeuppance.
01:20Yeah, I think that's been the case for England over the last few tournaments.
01:23I think for their good run games, they should be winning.
01:25And then they've come up against a good side and they've come up short.
01:29It's not always the best team wins a tournament, Peter,
01:31so I'm glad this time the best team won the tournament.
01:33Spain were the best team by a mile in the tournament.
01:36For a split second, I thought when England equalised,
01:38they might go in and actually steal the Euros,
01:41but Spain went on and won it.
01:42So I think we're glad that the best team won,
01:44but we're disappointed.
01:45Obviously, we were there.
01:46We're disappointed in the Scotland performances and results,
01:49but hopefully they can improve that for the Nations League.
01:51Yeah, do you think we missed Ruffey when we were over there, Tam, to be honest with you?
01:55No, I don't think we did, no.
01:56I don't think we did.
01:5811 days, 10 days, Ruffey would have been struggling.
02:02He'd be hardened over there, you know, in a few pints.
02:04Absolutely.
02:05If I can pay you a compliment, you definitely stepped up.
02:08You were the man who got the golden jersey,
02:13because you know that way when you head to a 10-day trip,
02:17you have low expectations.
02:20I was a consummate professional, by the way.
02:23You were indeed.
02:24For the first time ever.
02:25You were indeed the consummate professional.
02:27But it was great, Ruffey, and I have to thank so many people
02:33that we ran into who were basically Scotland fans
02:37that mentioned to us that they watched the programme from near and far, Tam.
02:41Yeah, there was.
02:42I mean, we interviewed the guys from New Zealand.
02:44We've seen people from Australia, from America.
02:47There's so many people that watched the show.
02:49We gave away a lot of prizes and all that.
02:50So it was great interacting.
02:51It was eye-opening, I think, to see how many people actually watched the show.
02:55There was loads and loads of Scotland fans who actually watched the show as well.
02:59Yeah, from not only the UK, but as Tam mentioned there,
03:04New Zealand, Australia, Canada, America.
03:06It was just absolutely fantastic.
03:09So thank you to you all for your support,
03:11and hopefully that will continue into the new season.
03:13And with that in mind, to be perfectly honest with you, Ruffey,
03:18the fans were magnificent.
03:20The team weren't.
03:22No, they weren't.
03:23I think the first game was disappointing.
03:24I think Porteous getting sent off didn't help things.
03:27But, you know, I thought, well, we're all led to believe we're going to have a goal,
03:31you know, and I can understand coming against Germany, the home nation,
03:35why you wouldn't have a goal.
03:36You'd be disciplined.
03:37But as soon as the first goal went in and then the second one went in,
03:41you know, there was no way back at all, you know.
03:43But as the game progressed, I think the last game was a disappointing one
03:48when you've got to win it.
03:49And I don't think we made an effort to win it until the last five, ten minutes,
03:52which for me, I didn't think it was good enough.
03:55I thought there was some team...
03:57There should have been substitutions earlier, much earlier.
04:01I thought James Forrest should have appeared at some time.
04:04What's the point of taking him?
04:05You know, he's in fire over here.
04:07I think he would have made a big change,
04:09but I would have certainly thrown in another striker.
04:12I just went winger, two strikers, three at the back.
04:14Let's have a go at them.
04:15Yeah, I think you're 100% right.
04:17I mean, when we were there, Tam,
04:19I think the Germany game was such a disappointment
04:23because we were woeful.
04:25But then from there, I mean, I think Steve Clarke deserves credit
04:29for, yet again, getting us to a tournament.
04:32But when you're there to get to the game against Switzerland,
04:36I thought even in the last 15 minutes, I thought if he was adventurous,
04:41if he had that feeling of, listen, we're here, let's have a go.
04:45I thought Switzerland was there for the taking in the last 15 minutes.
04:49They blew it.
04:50The substitutions were too late and not the right ones.
04:54And then, as Rafi mentioned, Hungary was just a disaster waiting to happen.
04:58You could see it coming.
04:59First substitution, 76th minute.
05:02And the aftermath of it is we just had a whole group of fans
05:06so disappointed in what they were watching.
05:09Yeah, and the Tartan army travelled in incredible numbers.
05:12I mean, Peter, I've never seen anything like that in my life.
05:14Every city we went to, we went to three cities, mobbed with Scotland fans.
05:18I don't think I've seen any other supporters but Scotland fans.
05:21And to let them down, you know, really, in the two games you spoke about,
05:25the Germany game never turned out.
05:26I thought Germany were excellent.
05:27Switzerland, I think the thinking with Steve Clarke was,
05:30let's not get beat here and let's take it into the last game.
05:33Whereas you could see, you could have went for it in the last 15 minutes.
05:36If we lose that game, we're out.
05:37So I kind of defend him a little bit on that game.
05:40But the last game, we were woeful.
05:42We didn't create a chance in 70, 80 minutes.
05:44And it was roughly said, the last five, 10 minutes we started to have a go
05:47and it ended up, because Hungary had to win as well to have a chance.
05:49So yeah, really, really disappointing, particularly the way we started
05:53in the group, you know, beating, you know, we beat the champions.
05:55Yeah, they weren't wanting to win it.
05:57We beat them comfortably at Hamden.
05:58And we're unlucky away from home, you know, played well.
06:00So we've got it in us with a big performance,
06:02but we've just never done it in Germany.
06:03I just wonder, just in the aftermath of it all,
06:06you know, obviously Spain rightly went on to win the tournament
06:10because they had fabulous footballers and they entertained
06:13and they were on the front foot.
06:16And they also had a key element that a number of teams didn't have,
06:19which was they had players who could beat a man, which was a joy to watch.
06:23I wonder what Steve Clarke will be thinking now.
06:26He's got possibly two years, I think, left in the contract.
06:30Does he have enough in the tank with the squad that he has?
06:33Is there enough coming through?
06:35Because I was reading there only 24 hours ago, I think,
06:38you know, Liverpool are looking at Ben Doak to put out and loan.
06:42You know, do we have enough of that calibre of player?
06:45Is he somebody that could step forward and give us options?
06:48I think he can, Peter, but he's got to play every week.
06:49I think, you know, just being part of the squad at Liverpool is not enough.
06:52I think that he has to go and play, whether it's the Championship in England
06:55or whether it's the Premier League up here.
06:56He needs to go and play a full season.
06:58I think he's very, very talented, but he needs to play football.
07:00I don't think he's going to play for Liverpool.
07:02So he's definitely won.
07:04Tommy Conway obviously came in and, you know, looked sharp in the friendlies.
07:08I think he's out of contract at Bristol.
07:10I think there's a few clubs sniffing about him.
07:12I think there's a few coming through.
07:14Billy Gilmore's still young and, you know, it might be a changing of the guard,
07:17but I don't think it's going to be quite yet.
07:18I think they'll get another campaign out of them.
07:20This Nations League, you'll get another campaign out of,
07:23you know, your Hanleys and guys like that.
07:24And then I think after that, I think there's got to be some,
07:26you know, three or four fresh faces coming through to push in.
07:29Interestingly enough, Robbie, I wonder,
07:31does it need a fresh approach from the manager?
07:34Well, you've just touched on Spain there,
07:36and I think the pleasing bit about Spain up front, they played two wingers
07:41and they were the exciting ones, because if you watch most of the games,
07:44all the damage was done in the last third of the park.
07:46However, midfield players got the ball,
07:49they fed the ball to these two guys who had all the ability in the world
07:53to get into the 18-yard box, take people on
07:55and create goals and score goals as well.
07:58So I think he needs to change his formation a wee bit.
08:01I think we need to start playing with an out-and-out wide player.
08:04And unfortunately, James Forrest at this moment in time
08:07is the only one we've got as a wide, wide winger, if you know what I mean.
08:11Unless there's somebody who comes out for somewhere.
08:13But it'll be interesting to see when he comes out.
08:15We've got three really hard games in this Nations League.
08:19We've moved up the league now, we're in the top league.
08:21You know, he really has to get players set to their formation and stick by them,
08:26you know, and hopefully we can get back on a winning run
08:29because we're track record now.
08:30When Steve Clarke came in, we were talking about 15 games unbeaten and all that stuff.
08:35But now it's a reverse.
08:37Now the stats keep coming up.
08:39Every time we don't win a game now, we're getting worse and worse.
08:42So we need to start getting a team out there that can win games.
08:45Yeah, absolutely.
08:46What do you think about it all?
08:48Scotland going forward,
08:51would you be confident with the current squad?
08:53Maybe three or four fresh faces?
08:54Who are those fresh faces?
08:56We still can't score goals, still can't defend.
09:00Those problems are still there to be addressed.
09:02But it was a great summer of football.
09:04Certainly, I enjoyed watching Spain.
09:06I'd tipped France.
09:07Tam, who'd you gone for?
09:09I'd went for Portugal.
09:12I think France beat them.
09:13I think France and Portugal were both disappointing.
09:15I think they played not to get beat.
09:17I think Spain were more free-flowing and, as Ruffey said, play with the wingers
09:22and went out to attack and win games.
09:23They were the only team.
09:24England were the same.
09:25They were counter-attacking KG.
09:27France hardly scored a goal.
09:28So I was really, honestly, I was glad that Spain won it
09:32because it was not just a victory for the best team,
09:33but a victory for football for me.
09:35Yeah, absolutely.
09:36Just as a footnote to that on the England situation,
09:38and this is something that sometimes,
09:40I wonder if we're guilty of it right across the UK,
09:43but I think especially down south,
09:45the expectation far exceeds the reality.
09:49Kane, for me, he gets, at times, pasted from all quarters.
09:55But he was playing in a side that certainly didn't play to his strengths.
09:58And over and above that, Ruffey,
10:00I think they elevate players to what they think is world-class,
10:04when really they're not.
10:05They've got great players.
10:06I haven't got world-class.
10:07I mean, Bellingham will be, I think, a world-class player in the future.
10:12But he's still learning his trade.
10:13Yeah, that was the thing.
10:14I couldn't get my head around every time I seen a game.
10:17You know, they were talking about Bellingham up there being world-class.
10:20I've never seen him doing anything world-class.
10:23In any of the games, you know,
10:24I know he's a wonderful player and a great player to watch.
10:27I think, unfortunately, England have got more individuals,
10:31individual players, you know,
10:32rather than a team, collective,
10:34who are all going out fighting for each other.
10:36I do think they're hard to beat because they're well-organised,
10:39but certainly they're never excited.
10:41You know, and I was getting particularly worried on holiday
10:43because there was a lot of English supporters in my hotel.
10:46And every time they went to another round,
10:50you could see the English shirts coming out in force.
10:53And fortunately, I left in the semi-final
10:55because I don't think I could have bared that another night.
11:00Well, listen, at the end of the day, well done to Spain.
11:03We're looking forward to a new domestic season.
11:05It's already up and running as far as the Premier Sports Cup is concerned.
11:10And then, of course, you know, you get a situation where suddenly
11:13the big boys come into the equation in the last 16.
11:17I think we can look at the draw for it after all the games
11:20that have taken place.
11:21Celtic against Hibernian,
11:22Dundee United against St Mirren,
11:24Aberdeen Queen's Park,
11:25Falkirk Hearts, Dundee against Airdrie,
11:28Motherwell Kilmarnock, Rangers against St Johnson
11:31and Spartans against Ross County.
11:34So those games are in the last 16
11:37and suddenly we've got cup football to look forward to.
11:41I liked the cup being decided this end of the year
11:46to give you that piece of silverware that somebody can build on.
11:49Yeah, because I think it was usually February, March, the final of the League Cup.
11:54And I agree with that.
11:55I think the final was just before Christmas.
11:57I think it's great to have a trophy in the cabinet, whoever club it is.
12:02The draw there, some great ties, fair play to the Spartans.
12:05You know, getting through into the knockout stage is fantastic for them.
12:09Hibs will be ruined losing that game to Celtic Hearts.
12:11You know, if Hibs win that game,
12:12they finish as one of the top three and they're seeded and they avoid Celtic.
12:16So it just shows you, you know,
12:18obviously the Hibs were still going to go through,
12:20but the fact is they've got Celtic away because they lost that game against Celtic.
12:25You know, Falkirk got home to Hearts.
12:27You know, some really good ties here.
12:29And as I said, I don't like this seeding.
12:32I think it should just be an open draw, Peter,
12:34but it's thrown up some really, really good games.
12:37Financially, it's quite lucrative for the smaller clubs.
12:40If you get through...
12:41For Spartans, especially.
12:42If you get through and you get a Rangers or a Celtic or even a Hearts and a Hibs,
12:47but to get back to Rangers and Celtic,
12:48you're talking about £100,000 in the kitty.
12:50And you keep hearing managers at the start of this season saying,
12:54my budget's tight, this is that.
12:56If you draw one of them and you get a wee run,
12:58because this is a cup that you can get a wee run in
13:01and you can go right to the semi-final.
13:03They need the money.
13:04And a lot of them will be rubbing their hands,
13:07you know, with the draws that they've got.
13:09Yeah, absolutely.
13:10You can give us your views on the football and your favourite team.
13:15We'll talk about them individually as well shortly.
13:18Thanks to so many of you.
13:20James says, Scotland squad needs some youth added to it.
13:24Needs some width as well.
13:26The national team says, Shug, not good.
13:28No world-class players.
13:29Decent midfield.
13:30But the real problem is strikers.
13:32Duncan Ferguson was the last proper striker Scotland had.
13:36Welcome back, says Patrick.
13:38Delighted to have you boys back.
13:41To suggest Kane is not world-class as well.
13:45To be nice, stupid, says Kevin.
13:48Well, to be perfectly honest with you,
13:51at the end of the day, what I said about Harry Kane was
13:53that he didn't get the service.
13:56If you listened, Kevin, he just didn't get the service.
13:59They have elevated a number of their players.
14:02I watched, I was there at the Champions League final.
14:05He's at Real Madrid, he's a great player,
14:08but he's not world-class.
14:10World-class, in my mind, is a regular player
14:12who can play and perform at the highest level,
14:15and makes an impact in a game.
14:17Now, maybe my standards are a wee bit higher than most.
14:20I think Kane is world-class.
14:23My point being, I don't think they play to his strength.
14:27You're right, I would agree 100%.
14:29They don't play to his strength.
14:30And see when you take Kane out of that England team
14:32and put him on the Spain side,
14:34you'd score goals on that side.
14:35Oh, absolutely.
14:36With the two boys that are wide,
14:37and the two boys that are getting into positions
14:39and putting balls in.
14:40That's when you see him.
14:41I just think he was unfortunate.
14:43I think, obviously, he was carrying a wee bit of injury,
14:45but he sort of, as the games went on,
14:47he started trying to go and look for the ball,
14:50rather than being in there, waiting on it coming in,
14:52and it never came in to his assets.
14:55Yep, absolutely.
14:57Just before we move on to a number of things
14:59I want to talk about, guys,
15:00because obviously, Monday, by the time we get to Friday,
15:03we'll have to offer our predictions,
15:05which are usually wildly off the pace.
15:08But we'll offer our predictions
15:10on who we think is going to win each tournament.
15:13You can give us your thoughts as well.
15:15Give us your thoughts on the players,
15:16in and out, at your favourite side.
15:19Are you happy with the business that's done at the moment?
15:21Are you angry?
15:22Are you looking for major changes?
15:24Do you want some transparency,
15:26some answers from your club
15:29as they prepare for the new season?
15:31We'll take a stab at who we think is going to win the title,
15:35who we think is going to be relegated,
15:37and who we think will be in the playoff.
15:38And it all starts again.
15:40I wonder if there's a...
15:42Do you get more enthusiastic, Ruffey,
15:44because we have to wait closer to the window closing
15:47or closer to the season starting?
15:50Yeah, I think every supporter, you know,
15:51obviously looks at the transfer window,
15:53you know, coming in, going out.
15:55You know, a lot of them are anxious.
15:56A lot of the clubs get it done pretty quickly.
15:59Some don't.
16:00They hang on.
16:01And I think the supporters are a wee bit anxious,
16:03particularly the Rangers.
16:04I'm talking about the Rangers and Celtic.
16:06I think Hibs and Aberdeen have just got to get better.
16:09They've got to get better for the league.
16:10They've got to have a more consistent performance.
16:13But whereas Rangers and Celtic are concerned just now,
16:17as far as the Celtic supporters, they'll be...
16:19I think they've got to be anxious.
16:21It's OK saying,
16:22yeah, we're going to bring players in,
16:23we're going to bring players in.
16:24If O'Reilly was to move,
16:26I think all hell would break loose.
16:28I don't think...
16:30If there's nothing coming in...
16:34If tomorrow I picked up a paper and they were sold to Atlanta,
16:39I think Celtic supporters would be particularly anxious
16:42because there's no midfield getting talked about.
16:46It's been the boy up front and they've got the two goalkeepers.
16:49I think Celtic supporters will be particularly anxious
16:52as the week goes on.
16:53I know Brendan Rodgers has said,
16:55yeah, there'll be players coming in by the end of the window,
16:57but they've got to come in.
16:59They've got to come in.
17:01Well, I don't want to start.
17:02I'm in quite a positive mood about Scottish football at the moment
17:07because, obviously, I've had the summer from hell.
17:11So I'm trying to change my attitude, Tam.
17:16But I've been in this movie a million and one times before
17:20with regards to Celtic and Rangers
17:22and the spin that goes on
17:25and the late, late signings that undoubtedly are coming
17:29and who's in control and who's calling the shots.
17:33I could make a million and one programmes on it.
17:36The one thing that I think is strange
17:38is we have both sets of fans looking at it
17:42and they're far from happy.
17:43If you're a Rangers fan right now,
17:45you're looking and saying to yourself,
17:47is it clear that Clement is...
17:53Is he settled?
17:54Does he look as if he's happy with what he's been sold?
17:58Are the fans being told the real situation with the stadium
18:04and the ongoing works there that have forced them out to Hampden?
18:09Are they happy that they've got enough signings
18:12that suggest that Rangers can wrestle the title away from Celtic?
18:16These are all the unanswered questions at the moment
18:19and how many more players are heading out the door
18:22and how many players are coming in
18:23that are actually going to make a telling contribution.
18:27That's your Rangers predicament.
18:29And as Ruffey's mentioned there,
18:30if you listen to Rangers fans, then you listen to Celtic fans,
18:34Celtic fans are thinking,
18:36wait a minute, we've been in this movie before.
18:38They're thinking to themselves,
18:40late signings, two goalkeepers,
18:45Ida and Bernardo deals not done,
18:48dragging on, heading towards that end of August transfer window.
18:53Yeah, first the Rangers, Peter.
18:55I think that the Rangers supporters are obviously concerned.
18:58I think that Philippe Clermont does need time and patience,
19:00but I think that if you look at the Rangers squad
19:02over the last two, three seasons,
19:04they haven't been good enough.
19:05I think that Philippe Clermont is clearly coming in
19:08to rip it up and start again.
19:09Peter, he's getting rid of big earners.
19:12Ryan Jack's out the door, Goldson's out the door,
19:14Barisic's out the door, Lundstrom's out the door.
19:15I think Tavernier will go as well.
19:17There's five big hitters out the door.
19:19I think it needs a freshness at Rangers.
19:22I understand that Rangers supporters will be concerned,
19:24but I wouldn't be.
19:25I think this has been needed, Peter.
19:26I think this has been needed at Rangers for two or three seasons.
19:29They need to get rid of all these players,
19:30you know, and bring winners in,
19:32bring better quality in to challenge Celtic.
19:34In terms of Celtic...
19:36Better quality costs money.
19:37I don't want you to jump...
19:38Don't jump onto Celtic right now.
19:40Just bear with me on what you're saying about Rangers.
19:43Better quality needs money,
19:47which the proof is in the pudding.
19:49I think between now and the end of that window,
19:53not only is it crucial that he gets that quality
19:55that you're talking about,
19:57but he also has to make sure that they don't suffer
19:59what they suffered last season,
20:00which is players coming in,
20:02either being injured, not making a contribution,
20:04and suddenly...
20:06Well, I think it's a foregone conclusion.
20:08Dynamo Kiev are on the horizon.
20:11Yeah, Dynamo Kiev is going to be a hard tie.
20:12I watched them against Partisan Belgrade.
20:15I think they won the first leg 5-1.
20:16That's quite a difficult game for Rangers,
20:18and obviously they need that money
20:19to try and get into the Champions League.
20:22No, Peter, I think they do need better quality players in.
20:25Tavernier is a strange one for me.
20:26A lot of Rangers supporters want him out the door.
20:30For me, these are one out of the five or six
20:32that I mentioned I would keep,
20:33simply because I think, quality-wise, he's got it.
20:36Domestically, he's got it.
20:37OK, he struggles a little bit in Europe,
20:39but to get a right back that can defend in Europe,
20:42you're talking 10, 20 million pounds.
20:44So I think Tavernier, for me, I would keep.
20:47I think the other ones, Rangers need to get rid of.
20:49Cantmill's another one for me.
20:50I'd get rid of him as well.
20:51I think that he's come in and not made the impact
20:54that the supporters wanted.
20:56And I think they've got to have a little bit of patience.
20:58I think the players that Rangers are getting linked with,
21:00they've signed Cherney, he's got a good pedigree
21:02at Wolfsburg, Czech International.
21:03I think the players that they're getting linked with,
21:05if they can bring them in,
21:06I think they'll be a better team this season, Peter.
21:08I think that he was left a lot of average players
21:13with Michael Bale, not to put it politely.
21:15He's got rid of one of them, back to Holland.
21:17I think possibly he could get rid of another one in Decers.
21:20So I think he's looked at that squad and think to himself,
21:23we're nowhere near good enough.
21:24We need to get rid of five or six.
21:25We need to bring five or six in.
21:26So I understand the Rangers supporters
21:28being a little bit fearful of players coming in and out,
21:32but for me, it's been needed, Peter.
21:34It's been needed for two or three years.
21:35So if I'm a Rangers fan, I'm thinking,
21:36let him get on with his job.
21:38Let him clear the decks and let him get players in.
21:42Yeah, I think he's got to get the time.
21:43The proof is always in the pudding, Roffy.
21:46There are, and again, we love the fact
21:50that there's written newspapers.
21:52You've got your radio broadcasters, your TV broadcasters.
21:56You've got all sorts of people offering their opinion.
21:58You've got fanzines.
22:00You've got what I call the ultra fanatics
22:03who will only hear, you know, green, blue, maroon, whatever,
22:09tangerine.
22:10They only want to hear positive things
22:12and they don't want to hear the criticism.
22:14The one thing that is evident throughout the season,
22:18and we always mention it to our journalists as well,
22:20never let your eyes deceive you.
22:22Cantwell was a sand dancer for me.
22:26He was one of those players that was too busy posturing
22:29rather than thinking, I've got to go and deliver for Rangers.
22:32It's no surprise for me that he's chapped the manager's door
22:36and said, look, I want to go to pastures new.
22:39If I was a Rangers fan, I'd say, not only let him go,
22:42even before he chapped the door, I'd be saying,
22:44find yourself another club.
22:46Well, I think it was noticeable.
22:47A part of the season, I think it was a European game, wasn't it?
22:50He hauled them off after 20 minutes, you know,
22:53and if managers don't think that you're playing to the way,
22:56the system, and you're just doing your own thing,
22:58then the game's moved on now.
23:01You have to be really exceptional
23:02to have that kind of player on the park.
23:04And I think the writing was on the wall for him
23:06after that game.
23:08But I think the Rangers manager is working.
23:12The players it seems that he's bringing in
23:14seem to be on a budget.
23:16Do you know what I mean?
23:17I think he would love a bigger budget.
23:19I think he'd be the chance to bring in a better player.
23:24He would do it, but he's now been told,
23:28this is the budget, this is who you can bring in.
23:31Again, we're still seeing the loan players coming in,
23:34and that means they're on obviously quality wages,
23:36but they're not laying out so much money.
23:39It'd be interesting to see what the finished article is.
23:41I think the jigsaw puzzle is all over the place
23:44just now with Rangers, but once we get to Celtic,
23:46I think it's the same over there as well.
23:49But I think Rangers, as Tam said,
23:51needed that clear out.
23:52They needed to bring in better players,
23:54and the supporters will be excited by new players
23:57coming in and seeing how they do.
23:59They'll just be interested to see what the big one is.
24:02And the big one for me is Shanklin.
24:04That would be a notice of intent for me.
24:08If he finds enough money to buy Shanklin,
24:12the Rangers supporters will be ecstatic
24:16because he's proved he's now matured and he's got on.
24:20But every time Rangers keep talking about him,
24:23it's the money side of it, it's the money side of it.
24:25And then on the other side of it,
24:26we'll have to see what Hart's are talking about.
24:29You know, we've not got Charlie Adam here
24:31to put a price on Shanklin.
24:33So, it'll be interesting.
24:35He's running out of last year's contracts, so.
24:37I don't think Hart's will fall into that trap.
24:40No, not at all.
24:41This is it.
24:42This is what you've got to pay here.
24:43I believe that Hart's are thinking to themselves,
24:45well, we're prepared to keep him and let him go for nothing.
24:48But if Rangers put in £2 million, £2.5 million, £3 million,
24:52are they going to knock that back just to have him for one season?
24:55Well, they're adamant, quite simply,
24:56that they want the £4 or £5 million.
25:00I mean, they're absolutely adamant.
25:02For a player with one year left, they're never getting that, Peter.
25:04No, but the other thing about it is,
25:08I have my doubts whether...
25:10I have my doubts right now.
25:11I think there needs to be...
25:13I don't know.
25:14I think we're not getting a clear enough picture from Ibrox
25:17on what's going down,
25:19especially with the stand.
25:22I think that's irking a lot of Rangers fans,
25:25the extent of being out of that ground
25:28all the way through to November,
25:30because it will be for the European matches.
25:31That's the first thing.
25:33And then Hamden.
25:34And Hamden, as Celtic found out in the 90s,
25:36is a soulless place if you're not playing well.
25:40And that's the first thing I think that's annoying them,
25:43the second thing is,
25:45if you're a Rangers and you want a Shanklin
25:48and you've got the money, you go and get him.
25:50You go and get him.
25:51Get him in there, get him in in the season,
25:53get him in at the crucial time where he is
25:56able to settle in
25:58to play the crucial qualifier.
26:00The qualifier's massive for them.
26:02This isn't one of these situations where you're saying,
26:04oh well, they drop down to the Europa League.
26:08Getting into the Champions League gives you a whack of cash
26:11in this new format.
26:12These eight games are absolutely massive.
26:15It's anywhere between 40 and 60 million.
26:18And that is a real huge shot in the arm for Rangers.
26:22So I'm looking at the stadium,
26:24I'm looking at the delays,
26:25I'm looking at the move to Hamden,
26:28I'm looking at the recruitment at the moment
26:30and I'm saying to myself,
26:32it's no surprise the Rangers fans I speak to
26:34are looking and thinking,
26:37this side does not look as if it's capable
26:39of beating what is the bookies' red hot favourites,
26:42which is Celtic.
26:44And I think Celtic, as we switch our attention here,
26:47I think Celtic are in a situation where as ever,
26:50they're bored.
26:51Who are older, wiser,
26:53just look at it and say, well,
26:55you could have potentially
26:57150 to 200 million in the bank.
27:00They're building a new complex at Barrowfield.
27:04They've got add-ons that they could get from Frimpong.
27:08The sale of Matt O'Reilly.
27:11Money coming in, hand over fist and season ticket money,
27:14you can't get,
27:15the waiting list for season tickets is absurd.
27:17So it doesn't matter what they do,
27:19it doesn't matter what message boards are all going mental
27:22about the lack of signings.
27:23Quite simply, Celtic's board can sit there and say,
27:27let's wait.
27:28Rangers are not in a place where they're capable
27:31of really taking the title off us.
27:35That's what they'll be thinking.
27:37And they'll be looking and saying,
27:38can we wait and duck and dive
27:41on what we need for the Champions League?
27:44Because we're guaranteed the money anyway.
27:45Well, if they're planning to be competitive
27:47in the Champions League, Peter,
27:48they need to sign four or five players.
27:50I agree with you, I think the squad right now,
27:52that Celtic squad right now would win the league,
27:53will win the league.
27:55If they want to be competitive in Europe,
27:57that squad will get battered again.
28:00I don't think they're good enough,
28:01you know, in terms of making an impact.
28:04I think the Rangers,
28:05going back to Rangers,
28:06I think the Rangers fans will be more happy
28:07with the players that are going out the door.
28:09I think they're thinking to themselves,
28:11they've got rid of a lot of players.
28:12Sef Wentes, I think, is gone as well.
28:14Lammers, you know, all the guys I mentioned.
28:16You know, Lindstrom, Barisic, you know,
28:18Golsan, all heavily criticised last season.
28:21So I think if you're a Rangers supporter,
28:22you're thinking, great, we're getting rid of all these players.
28:24You're freeing up a lot of wages, by the way.
28:26That's a lot of money getting freed up in wages.
28:28And Ruffey was talking about loans.
28:29Loans cost money.
28:30You know, you might go and get,
28:32might go and get a 10, 15 million pound playing loan,
28:34but you're going to need to pay them 40 grand a week.
28:36So they need that money sitting there in terms of wages.
28:38So it's all dependent on who Rangers bring in.
28:41I think you'd be happy if your Rangers fan,
28:42the players going out the door,
28:43but the players that come in,
28:45I think they will be better than the ones that left Peter.
28:47Yeah, I do.
28:48I think Lindstrom last season was poor.
28:52You know, Barisic was poor.
28:53Golsan, I think his legs have gone.
28:56Lammers was a disaster.
28:58You know, Sef Wentes was poor.
29:01You know, Ryan Jack was injured.
29:03You know, so you're looking at all these players
29:04and going, surely Rangers can bring in better than that.
29:06And I think they will.
29:07But whether that's enough to topple Celtic,
29:09I don't think so at the minute.
29:10Yeah.
29:11Ruffey mentioned Shanklin.
29:12Shanklin's a game changer for Rangers.
29:14Shanklin comes into Rangers.
29:15I think the whole, you know, whole complexity changes.
29:18I think Rangers supporters start thinking,
29:20we might have a 25, 30 goals a season striker now.
29:23Whereas we haven't got that for me.
29:24I know Desser's done it last season,
29:26but for me, if Shanklin was playing the Rangers team
29:28last season, I'd have scored 40.
29:31Yeah, you've had a full, refreshing, you know.
29:35You big Steins haven't they wore off with you yet?
29:39Do you know what, I'm actually at the point, Ruffey,
29:42honestly, I'm sitting looking at him right now.
29:44I've missed him, right?
29:45I've missed him because of his lunacy, right?
29:48But I'm looking at you and I'm thinking,
29:50is it too early for me to just give him one
29:53right across the jaw?
29:54Because I just think, I mean, I just think,
29:57I think Celtic are so far ahead financially, Ruffey.
30:01And again, the only thing that I am looking at them
30:05and I'm thinking, you know, this is the same movie
30:09since 2003 after the UEFA Cup.
30:12This is just assess it, look at it as a business.
30:18They're a well-run business and they're just going to say,
30:21this is the plan.
30:22We're going to do one for the future.
30:25We're going to sign an old timer
30:27who's maybe going to get his last hurrah
30:30and his name is Kasper Schmeichel.
30:32And then we're going to wait and argue the peace
30:34over these people to see if we can get them cheaper.
30:37And then we're going to bring in those three
30:39or four projects for the future.
30:41And at that point, then Celtic fans will look and say,
30:47well, we've given you our season ticket money.
30:50We've also given you our Champions League money.
30:54Is this side capable of getting the results that they crave?
31:00One thing I would say is, you know,
31:02this is Brendan now at the chance
31:03where he's got a chance to emphasise to the board,
31:05I want to build a team.
31:07So Kasper Schmeichel doesn't exactly
31:10and the other goalkeeper,
31:12I think Celtic fans would have wanted more by now.
31:15Oh, most definitely.
31:16And it's okay, everything you said there
31:18and I do buy into it,
31:19but the first range of Celtic game,
31:22whenever that comes about,
31:23if Rangers compete with Celtic and possibly beat them,
31:27the same story is going to come out.
31:29Why did you not do something about this?
31:30Why are we not drawn away from them?
31:32Because it's been proven in a one-off game,
31:35Rangers have to be that far away for Celtic in the games.
31:38But in the long term, Celtic have proved
31:41that they've got the stamina to see it through.
31:43So I just wonder why you would want to wait
31:45and something like that happening.
31:47I just wonder why you would,
31:49because we go back to O'Reilly again,
31:52they seem to be upping, upping, upping the bids,
31:54and unless you've got somebody in the pipeline
31:57that you're going to bring in,
31:58a big name, a really good player,
32:00that's the only way you're going to get away with it.
32:02Because I still think, if we're on Celtic now,
32:06I think the goalkeeper has been a tremendous signing.
32:08It's just a complete swap for Harp.
32:11Yeah, I think he's a better keeper than Harp.
32:14Same pedigree, he looks a wee bit younger than Harp
32:18and he's still playing in the Euro finals.
32:20He's got everything in his background.
32:23I thought the boy Johnson had a poor season last year.
32:27I've already thrown my tuppence with him with scales.
32:29I think he's a really rude, good club player,
32:33but not Champions League player.
32:35I bet they haven't done anything about that.
32:36I think they're trying to get a couple of centre-halves
32:38out the door.
32:40In the midfield, three are as good as anything,
32:43but if O'Reilly leaves, who comes in there?
32:46We can't even start talking about letting him...
32:48I know O'Reilly came from down south
32:50and he proved that you can pick up players like that,
32:52but talking about a boy playing for Watford and somebody else,
32:55they should be setting their sights higher than that.
32:58They should have somebody at the Euros
33:00who have seen somebody from Switzerland or Hungary
33:02or any of these teams that are in the wage bracket,
33:06in the price range.
33:07Worth a punt.
33:08That's the kind of player that the fans would go,
33:11oh, I remember him in the Euros, he was fantastic.
33:14That's who we're getting.
33:15Somebody like that.
33:16Yeah, what do you think about that?

35:03That's certainly the vibe we got, Ruffy,
35:06from so many people who say they just sit down in America,
35:12I wish I could remember the guy's name with his son.
35:16Chad?
35:16No, it wasn't Chad.
35:19Chad Hogan?
35:20I wish I could remember the guy's name.
35:22It was Gary, I think, or Guy.
35:24And he was a big Rangers fan with his son
35:26and they just sit down on the telly
35:28and get kept up to date with everything
35:31that's happening with PLZ Soccer.
35:32I mean, it's been noticeable when the teams have been abroad
35:36and you see the supporters from abroad,
35:37Celtic and America or the Celtic supporters clubs
35:41coming to their games and Rangers would be the same
35:43if they go away somewhere.
35:44And obviously you've got your ex-pats away,
35:47you know, who need a wee bit of Scottish football.
35:50And I mean, if we supply that and keep them happy.
35:53Yeah, absolutely.
35:53You're still going strong.
35:54Still feeling good, Ruffy?
35:56Yeah, still good and great.
35:57I think I might have maybe taken a couple of years off
36:00if I'd have went to Germany.
36:02I don't know if I could have survived that lagger.
36:07I might have had to.
36:08Can you remember when we set this up?
36:10You remember when we started in year one, two and three
36:12when I was stressed?
36:14That's exactly how it was in Germany, Ruffy.
36:16Oh, I'm glad I wasn't there then.
36:17Exactly.
36:19It was one of those, a long time to be away, 10 days.
36:24Although I have to say, Ruffy, you know, when you look at it,
36:26I enjoyed, I certainly enjoyed Germany.
36:29I enjoyed the Champions League final with Real Madrid,
36:32watching them, you know, Real Madrid doing to Borussia Dortmund
36:35what they do to so many teams that I've watched them
36:39play against over the last couple of years.
36:41Enjoyed a wee bit of Wimbledon as well, Ruffy?
36:43Yeah, I saw that, yeah, that went good.
36:45Unfortunately, Andy got knocked out.
36:47But, you know, the women's final was good, which you were at,
36:50and so was the men's final, which was magnificent.
36:53Champions League final, Wimbledon final.
36:55I know.
36:56Kind of hide cash, can't you not?
36:58Or freebies.
36:59With all due respect, with all due respect.
37:01Took the men's polo, you know, down at...
37:06Oh, no.
37:07I'm going to head to the Dundee derby this weekend.
37:10I'm really looking forward to it as well.
37:12Great to have United back in the top flight as well.
37:15Just on that point then, before we talk about the likes of Dundee
37:18and Dundee United, Ruffy,
37:21Michael Goode's signing, where do you think...
37:23I mean, I agree with you wholeheartedly on the point you made.
37:26With regards to Brendan Rodgers, if you look at the contrast,
37:30and I don't think at times it means too much other than players' fitness,
37:35Rangers didn't have a great set of matches
37:39where the fans got excited about the results.
37:41You know, they just weren't able to produce the performances
37:44and the results that they were looking for.
37:46Celtic, in contrast, my God.
37:48You know, the game against Man City, great to watch.
37:50The game against Chelsea, I think I saw two Chelsea fans
37:54on one of the social media feeds,
37:57and boy, were they not happy with the result.
38:00They're playing good football.
38:02Rodgers has now got a situation where he's got them playing the football
38:06that he wants them to play, and of course,
38:09you know, they delivered the title.
38:11Yeah, they did.
38:12Pre-season games are always two sides to it.
38:16You know, if you're doing particularly well, you're great.
38:18You know, players are looking sharp.
38:20If you're not getting the results, it's, well, it's just only warm-up games.
38:23Don't judge us on these games, you know.
38:25But if you're winning them and you're winning them in style,
38:28which I think Celtic, obviously, the game against Man City was good to watch.
38:32But again, for me, I think the back four needs to get shuffled a wee bit.
38:37Midfield three are bang on.
38:39The two guys out wide, you know, Palma and Erkoon, couldn't look good.
38:44But they've not produced the consistency that the other two had.
38:49Abada and the boy that went away with it.
38:52They've not produced that consistency yet.
38:54If this is a new year for them,
38:56if they're the two kind of players that need a year to settle and just blend in
39:00and they can produce the form that the two wide guys are,
39:03then Keogh will start scoring more goals.
39:05But I still think the Celtic supporters want a big bit of quality.
39:09At the beginning of the season, you've already touched it,
39:12Tam's touched on it.
39:13Do they want a good home season?
39:16Do they want to win the league?
39:18Do they want to win the Cup?
39:19Are they going to get excited again about just getting into Europe
39:22and the lights coming on?
39:23Yeah.
39:24What is it you want?
39:25You know, what are you telling your club?
39:27Do you want to be better in Europe
39:29or do you just want to keep winning leagues and Cups?
39:31Yeah, lots of people engaging with us
39:33and thank you very much for your support.
39:35As we get ready for the new season,
39:37Gary Conner says,
39:39Peter, can you call Charlie Adam and get the real valuation on O'Reilly?
39:44I think, I think...
39:47£450,000.
39:48£450,000 Celtic have to pay Atalanta.
39:53Well done to Charlie and Fleetwood.
39:55You got a good result there, didn't you?
39:57Yeah, absolutely.
39:58After being relegated.
40:02Yeah, well done, Ruffey, that's good.
40:04You've really lifted his spirits.
40:06And by the way, you know me,
40:08I like to read out positive and negative.
40:11Steve Sloan says,
40:12Peter looks older than Ruffey.
40:14Yeah, I think I have to take that on board.
40:17Is that just since he came back from Germany?
40:20That's exactly it.
40:22I do look older than Ruffey.
40:24And again, I don't play golf, balls, tennis.
40:28And that's my day, really.
40:30The way Ruffey does.
40:32And also, this one says,
40:35Ruffey will outlive Tam.
40:39Which is a fair comment.
40:40By the way, can I just,
40:41I'm going to mention a name to you, Ruffey,
40:43because I think Hugh Scott has been with us since the very start.
40:4810, 11 years ago.
40:50And he says, great to have you back, guys,
40:52after a long, disappointing summer.
40:54I feel your pain, Hugh, actually.
40:56Just to think, Spain won,
40:58and we beat them well at Hampden.
41:00Just goes to show we peaked way too early.
41:03Dunn Eldon says,
41:05two and a half million for Shanklin tops.
41:08And also, somebody says,
41:11life expectancy in East Kilbride is 52, Tam.
41:15So, not long for you to go.
41:17And you'll be gone.
41:19And Shane Johnson says,
41:21St Mirren and Kilmarnock with a win Thursday in Europe.
41:24Well, that brings us nicely to the teams out with Celtic and Rangers.
41:28And quite simply, you know what I'm like, Ruffey.
41:31I really want the provincial clubs,
41:34the smaller clubs,
41:36to get that cash in Europe.
41:38To get into the biggest pot they possibly can.
41:42I just wonder about Kilmarnock.
41:45Maybe have they shot their ball,
41:47not winning at home?
41:49Yeah, I think so.
41:51Although the home team now has got to come out and win the game.
41:54That might suit them.
41:56I do think Kilmarnock are pretty good.
41:59Up front, particularly.
42:01I think they've got quality in there to score goals.
42:04So, I hope they can do it.
42:06We need them.
42:07We saw last year St Mirren doing particularly well.
42:09Top six.
42:10We need these clubs in the top six.
42:12We need them.
42:13Again, Rangers and Celtic at least a hard time.
42:15Yeah, I want to see Killie
42:18do something against Bruges.
42:21They're maybe not the team that everybody totally associates.
42:25They're not the stronger Bruges.
42:27But certainly, they've got some tidy players there.
42:30They've got a few players that are being watched
42:32by top European clubs.
42:34They look good on that surface, thank God.
42:37It's only the last year we'll see it there.
42:40But Killie have to do something.
42:42If they could get a win away there,
42:44it would be absolutely brilliant.
42:46I'm not ruling them out,
42:47but I think they're up against it.
42:49Yeah, they are, Peter.
42:50I think the pitch suited Kilmarnock that night.
42:52I think that surface.
42:54The brand new AstroTUFs are fine.
42:57That AstroTUF is older than Ruffey's Skechers.
43:00It was shocking.
43:02It was pissing the rain.
43:05To be honest, it just suited Kilmarnock down to the ground.
43:08On a big grass park,
43:09I think it's a different game over there.
43:11I hope Kilmarnock do get through.
43:12I'd really, really love them to get through.
43:14But I think they'll come up short.
43:15I thought you were right.
43:17I think the forward areas,
43:18they had two or three really quality players.
43:20But they couldn't show it on that pitch.
43:21It was like Bambi and Ice at times.
43:23They were just slipping about.
43:25Yeah, interesting you saying that.
43:27Shane says, best of luck to Kilmarnock.
43:29That's from a St Mirren fan.
43:31Graham Caldwell says,
43:32I don't think Circle were that impressive.
43:35Kilmarnock to win 2-1 on Thursday.
43:37I hope you're absolutely right.
43:38Chris Fraser says,
43:39I've been watching you for years.
43:41Chris, absolutely delighted that you've been watching us.
43:45So many people watch the programme.
43:47So many people listen to it on the podcast as well.
43:51And we're absolutely delighted.
43:53I can tell you the figures that we delivered last year,
43:56240 million impressions right across the whole year,
44:00from June to Junetam.
44:02And the views we got were absolutely massive
44:06across YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
44:08People, you know, recognising the brand,
44:11linking in, downloading the app
44:13and watching us on YouTube as well as the channel.
44:16The subscribers.
44:17It's just been a great season for us.
44:19And down to yourself, Ruffy and all the lads.
44:22And the girls as well,
44:23because Alisson, Kerry,
44:25such a vital part of the team,
44:26along with Patrick and Blair and Cheryl.
44:29Yeah, it's a hard-working team.
44:30They've got to be.
44:31It's a tight-knit team.
44:32And they're out at games.
44:33And you're in here.
44:34And the most important thing is getting the brand out there,
44:37getting the clicks and the hits and the subscriptions
44:39and the more the merrier for everyone.
44:42Yeah, absolutely.
44:44So thank you to...
44:45If I haven't mentioned you,
44:47Gary says,
44:48remember to get your predictions in for the weekend.
44:50Yeah, absolutely.
44:51We are taking last year's predictor
44:54out to our gala dinner in November, Ruffy.
44:56We're going to do a gala dinner.
44:58Obviously, it's bearing in mind that if you too,
45:01because you're growing in popularity,
45:03the two of you on the after-dinner circuit,
45:05we'll try and pick a date when you two are not working.
45:08Well, pick one in August,
45:10because you know we're out in August.
45:15Yeah, good point.
45:17It's only the really good speakers that are out in August.
45:21We'll head for November.
45:23And we'll get everybody in.
45:25We're going to have a gala dinner.
45:27We've got big news on the way for PLZ Soccer.
45:30As ever, we always like to add a couple of signings to him.
45:33I think he'll be happy with the two boys they've added.
45:36Yeah, you've got two...
45:38One...
45:39Both are currently still playing.
45:41And I think the viewers will enjoy their views.
45:45I played with one of them, played against one of them.
45:48Brilliant.
45:49Well, one of them is my type of player.
45:52No disrespect to the other one.
45:54He's obviously the guy you'd carry with you.
45:57He's a good lad.
45:59He's got an opinion as well.
46:01We'll have to drag it out of him.
46:03Tam, you need a couple of over-the-top tackles to make sure he's on for him.
46:07So I'm certainly looking forward to that.
46:10Somebody said, has it aided McGeady?
46:13No.
46:16Enough said.
46:17Listen, St Mirren.
46:19Now, I don't know about you, Rafi,
46:21I'm going to be glowing in my praise of them.
46:23I'm a big fan of Steven Robinson.
46:26To see the fans marching.
46:28Oh, it was great.
46:29Just brilliant to see them all marching.
46:31First time since 1987.
46:32Fantastic, isn't it?
46:33It's just great.
46:34They loved it.
46:35And I love the fact that they managed to get a good, credible draw.
46:38Well, they've had a great season.
46:40You could see things have changed at St Mirren.
46:43Obviously, new owners coming in there.
46:46100% behind the local fans.
46:48They're giving the fans part of the stadium when the big noises come.
46:52So you can see the fans are now bought into it, and it's great.
46:55A lot of them have memories of the last time we were there.
46:58One of my old teammates scored the last time St Mirren were in Europe.
47:03When they scored, he played for Partick Thistle.
47:05Dougie Sumner?
47:06Dougie Sumner scored.
47:07Oh, you've got to give me that one, Rafi.
47:09It's a good one.
47:10That's brilliant.
47:11That just shows you how long ago it was.
47:13By all accounts, they should have won that game.
47:16Let's hope.
47:17Let's hope that they can.
47:19Fancy St Mirren strongly, Peter.
47:21I watched the highlights.
47:22A few of my friends are St Mirren fans.
47:24They couldn't believe they'd ever won.
47:25So I'd fancy them.
47:26I packed St Mirren Park.
47:28It'll be brilliant, won't it?
47:29The place will be buzzing.
47:30How much fear will carry them over a line for me?
47:33I remember Maka saying when he played for St Mirren,
47:36he was in Europe all the time.
47:38Just absolutely fantastic.
47:40Has he started already?
47:41No, he started one.
47:42I missed it.
47:43I missed it completely.
47:44What was it he said?
47:45I can't remember.
47:46It was so quick.
47:47It was a rotten line.
47:49I just want them.
47:50I would love...
47:53We want them all in because of the coefficient.
47:56But just to get in.
47:57This is, for me, for a St Mirren, for a Carmarnock, for a Hearts,
48:02to get into the Europa League Conference League group stage,
48:08that money is just unbelievably...
48:12It changes and alters the budget and the players,
48:15the standard of players for the next couple of seasons.
48:18I think particularly for St Mirren and Carmarnock,
48:20I think Hearts have got a few quid in the bank already.
48:22They're obviously well-run, the foundation of Hearts.
48:24I think for Carmarnock and St Mirren, it's massive money.
48:27£4, £5, £6 million.
48:29I see Danny Armstrong's out of contract at Carmarnock.
48:31That could be the difference between giving him an extra grand a week,
48:34£1,500 a week.
48:35There you go.
48:36You want to stay, right?
48:37I'll sign.
48:38So they can not only attract better players, Peter,
48:40but they can keep their better players as well.
48:42So I think there's a long way to go.
48:44Obviously, they've got a couple of more rounds to go through.
48:46But I think you'd fancy St Mirren strongly.
48:49Carmarnock have got a tougher game,
48:50but if Carmarnock can get through that game,
48:52then you never know.
48:53They can get in the group stages,
48:54but you'd like to see both of them,
48:56and at least one of them in the group stages
48:58for the whole coefficient.
48:59Every day at four o'clock on PLZ Soccer's YouTube channel,
49:03you'll have football chat of some sort on a Monday.
49:07Definitely the football show,
49:08the women's football show will be a Tuesday.
49:10Wednesday, the football show will be on here
49:13with special guests as well, Monday and Wednesday.
49:16And Friday as well at four o'clock.
49:18Thursday, we'll have the journals for you at four o'clock.
49:22And I'll be continuing my one-to-one features.
49:25I've thoroughly enjoyed chatting to so many people,
49:28not only from, you know, the football days,
49:31legends, past and present,
49:33but lots of people from other sports as well.
49:37And there'll be a few surprise faces in the one-to-one.
49:40So there's lots of content for you to look forward to.
49:43And if you're getting ready for a game at the weekend,
49:45I love this time of year because usually it's not a bad time
49:48to get the t-shirt on and go and watch football.
49:51And here's what's on offer, I think,
49:53over the course of the weekend for you,
49:55as far as the fixtures,
49:58which is quite simply a Dundee derby.
50:01I'm looking forward to it, Ruffy.
50:03We've got two games on the Saturday.
50:08We've got three games on the Sunday
50:10and a game on the Monday as well.
50:12St. John's in Aberdeen.
50:13Yeah, we've said about it all along, you need derby games.
50:15Our league definitely needs derby games.
50:18I think we're posted that we're up there with supporters
50:22coming to games throughout the season.
50:24But adding a derby game into that, you know,
50:26just put the figures right through the roof.
50:28And I'm sure any of the supporters at Dundee
50:31will be really looking forward to it.
50:32Probably a sell-out.
50:34Yeah, I mean, Tam, you think about it.
50:37We've got a situation where we know we've got a fanatical
50:42nation of football lovers.
50:44So you've got an Edinburgh derby, which as ever,
50:47you know, people are clamouring for tickets.
50:49You've got Rangers and Celtic
50:52obviously not clamouring for tickets for the league matches
50:56because it's always just one set of fans.
50:58I think there's going to be a little bit of give and take this season.
51:02And then to get the Dundee derby as well.
51:05And let's not forget, when Aberdeen are playing well,
51:08they've got a great travelling support.
51:10Yeah, I'm glad that Dundee are back in the league.
51:13I was fortunate to play in a couple of derby games for Dundee.
51:16And the atmosphere was electric at both games.
51:18You know, the whole city gets behind either side.
51:22The Edinburgh derby as well.
51:24So, no, you're right.
51:25I think that that game over the years,
51:27that Dundee derby has been filled with goals and incident.
51:30There's been, you know...
51:31Big scores, hasn't there?
51:32There's been big scores.
51:33I think there's been a 5-1 or a 6-2.
51:36For the first time in a long time for me,
51:38Dundee got into the favourites.
51:39Dundee had a great season last season.
51:41You know, they finished in the top six
51:44and you've got Dundee just coming back up.
51:48I don't think a lot of fans are still convinced about Jim Goodwin.
51:51They've got off to a slow start in the League Cup.
51:55So, for the first time in a while,
51:57I think Dundee got into this game as favourites.
51:59Is the first Rangers-Celtic game Hamden?
52:02Yeah, well, I can tell you right now, Robbie,
52:06I'm just going to look at Celtic Park.
52:09It's on the 1st of September.
52:11It's a 12.30 kick-off.
52:12At Celtic Park?
52:13At Celtic Park.
52:14Well, that saves the carry-on with the stadium.
52:17Ibrox not being ready.
52:18I'm sure they'd want to play Celtic at Ibrox rather than Hamden.
52:22Yeah, I mean, that's a...
52:23Again, I think...
52:25When's the second one, Peter?
52:26Well, if my memory serves me correct, Ham,
52:28I think there will be a small contingent of Rangers fans,
52:31more than has been before,
52:33that they'll be allowed into that match.
52:35That was agreed at the tail end of last season.
52:37Is that fair?
52:38Yeah, listen, we want the full allocation for away supporters.
52:42You know, it's not the same fixture.
52:44It's not the same colour, same atmosphere.
52:46You know, having 800 away supporters as well,
52:48having none, to be honest,
52:49it's just a small, tiny pocket in a corner.
52:522nd of January, Rangers-Celtic.
52:55I mean, just the Rangers supporters would like to think
52:57they're back in Ibrox, but January...
52:59Do you think it'll change now that the chap Beesgrove
53:01isn't there?
53:02Beesgrove isn't there, because he came out and said
53:04under my stewardship, it'll never change.
53:07Do you think there'll be a different aspect
53:11of thinking about it now that he's not there?
53:13With regards to the...
53:15He said there'll never be a 3,000 or a 4,000 or a 5,000
53:19visiting support while I'm here.
53:22I'm sure it was him that said that.
53:24He's away.
53:25That's what I'm saying.
53:26So I'm wondering if there's going to be a change.
53:28Well, I'd like to think so.
53:29I think both teams would like to change.
53:32I did say to you when they were going through...
53:34I don't want to be negative on the first programme,
53:36but I did say to you that what they would do
53:38was eventually say, well, they're not getting
53:40the full stand.
53:41Here's a wee token gesture.
53:43We'll get to 2,000.
53:44And that's what's happened.
53:46Listen, you want to see fans at the game.
53:48Great.
53:49Let's celebrate at the moment the fact that the season's
53:51starting.
53:52And I think a Dundee derby for me up at Tanner Dyce
53:55will be magnificent.
53:56I'm really looking forward to that.
53:58You've got Hearts Against Rangers as the opener,
54:00which is brilliant because Hearts are looking...
54:03I think they've made some good signings.
54:05I like Stevie Naismith.
54:07And I think, you know, Rangers going there
54:10is a brilliant opener for satellite television.
54:14And then in the afternoon, you've got Motherwell
54:16against Ross County.
54:17Yeah, the Hearts-Rangers game's a cracker, Peter.
54:19It's always a great atmosphere at Tyne Castle.
54:21It's an intimidating stadium for anybody to go to.
54:24Rangers have been poor in the pre-season games.
54:26I don't think Hearts have been particularly great either.
54:29But as Ruffey said earlier, you can get a false narrative
54:32in terms of winning games in pre-season.
54:34I remember being at Hibs and we played, I think it was
54:36Cardiff, the championship.
54:37We played day and a half at the park.
54:39Played great against Leeds.
54:40And I'm thinking we're going to do something this season
54:42in the first game we lost to Carmarlock at home, 1-0.
54:45And other times we've been poor in pre-season,
54:47you've come flying out the trap.
54:48So I think that whole thing is out the window
54:50as soon as the first competitive game starts, Peter.
54:52Are you worried about the Hibbys?
54:55Yeah, because I've only signed two centre-halves
54:58and a goalkeeper.
55:00Are you worried about the narrative coming out
55:02between the Black Knights, the board now,
55:05the manager that's in there, his inexperience?
55:07I don't think it helped Peter, the comments from Bill Foley.
55:10In terms of Malcolm McKay and David Gray,
55:13wouldn't have been his picks.
55:15I think he's got a 25% stake in the club,
55:18which is great, Hibs needed that money and that investment.
55:20But that doesn't give him the right to call the shots.
55:22He's got to have some say in it, of course.
55:24But I don't think those comments helped,
55:26particularly as a manager.
55:28Malcolm McKay's in place at the top,
55:30in play at the minute.
55:31So I am a little bit worried.
55:33I think the Kelty-Hearts game was a poor result,
55:35but the other games, Hibs have looked good.
55:37Queen's Park and Peterhead have scored goals,
55:40but they need two strikers in at least for me.
55:43They're heavily reliant on Dylan Venti,
55:45and I'm not quite sure he's the answer.
55:48I'm not going to change my mind on St John's,
55:50I'm picking them right now.
55:53But I'll tell you, Aberdeen is going to be
55:55the big conundrum for me.
55:57Jimmy Tilleen, we're going to find out
55:59if he's going to be able to get players
56:02who can play this high press that he's talking about.
56:05Yeah, I think the Aberdeen supporters
56:07will seem refreshed.
56:09They think they've got a manager who's going to
56:11take them somewhere.
56:12I hope he does.
56:14I think we need a strong Aberdeen up there.
56:16I think he does need to bring other players in,
56:19but it remains to be seen who he brings in.
56:21Yeah, absolutely.
56:22You can give us your view on, well, your team,
56:26or indeed the unfolding scenario with players
56:30in and players out at your favourite side.
56:33Thank you to so many of you.
56:36Kevin's saying, why is PLZ not listed
56:39on the new predictor?
56:41Don't worry, we are going to start that poll
56:43for you for the new season.
56:45Tam's going to be in there,
56:47and quite a lot of us are really looking forward to
56:50The two New Pundits going to be in as well?
56:52Yeah, we'll throw those two in as well.
56:54Absolutely.
56:55A conflict of interest for one of them.
56:57Yeah, that's true.
56:59That's a good shout, actually.
57:00They're not, they're not.
57:01He's not in the Premier League now.
57:02No, no, you're fine.
57:03Both of them are fine.
57:04Damn you, Jess.
57:05I thought you were going to let the cat out of the bag there.
57:07Anyway, as ever, Ruffey will be with me
57:10for yet another season, Ruffey.
57:12If I'd have said to you we'd have been 12 years together,
57:14you'd never have believed it, wouldn't you?
57:15No, I wouldn't have believed it,
57:16but just keep turning up.
57:19Ruffey, are you going to show them on the camera?
57:21No, they're new.
57:22Raise them up, raise them up.
57:23Yeah.
57:24New Skechers.
57:25New Skechers.
57:26I don't want to say whose new Skechers they are,
57:28but they're a famous ex-footballer who advertised them.
57:31No laces, you just slip into them.
57:33Oh, right.
57:34Old man's shoes.
57:35Fantastic, there you are.
57:36You don't even have to bend down.
57:38Brilliant.
57:39God, it's like a scene from a movie.
57:41Anyway, brilliant to have Ruffey back with us,
