00:09And welcome into Poke the Bear episode 242 presented by CLNS Media and sponsored by our
00:15good friends over at PrizePix and Game Time Tickets. My name is Connor Ryan and once again
00:20we are joined by the esteemed, the knowledgeable, Ty Anderson of 985 The Sports Hub. Ty, what's going on?
00:28What's up? How are we doing today? Doing well, doing well. We are, this is the draft episode.
00:35It's going to be short but sweet. We're going to dive into the Bruins finally after what seems
00:41like 10 years actually having an intriguing first round pick to talk about. So we'll dive
00:47into obviously the man of the hour, Dean Letourneau, but kind of the Bruins overall approach this draft.
00:54Busy day across the league. A lot of teams clearing cap space, moving players without
00:59retention, Ty. It's interesting to note, but you know that's maybe a story for another day when we
01:04look at free agency and what these teams do with that cap space. But I guess before we kind of
01:10dive into the overall approach, we have to start with the 6-7 forward, the new Tage Thompson,
01:18the new Michael Rasmussen, the new Joe Colborne, whatever the hell he's going to be. Dean Letourneau,
01:24which a guy that, again, you look at how the Bruins have approached when they've had these
01:29first round picks. You look at guys like Johnny Beecher, Trent Frederick, guys who are everyday
01:35NHL players are very productive in what their roles are, but the floor I think was easy to
01:40chat with those guys, but the high end ceiling, not really there. Letourneau feels like it's the
01:45opposite where it's like, he's like the NBA, he's the dude who's like Giannis, right? Played in
01:52Greece, 6'8", like he's going to grow another two inches. You don't know what the hell you're
01:56going to get, but if he hits, you've got a player that every other team in the league covets,
02:02right? And I think that's kind of what you're banking on with a guy like Letourneau. A big
02:06risk, but you can see the upside for sure. Yeah, and I think that's what's important to
02:11note here, right? It's like, it's sort of, you know, I said this on Twitter on Friday night
02:16when the pick was made, but would you rather strike out swinging for the fences or ground
02:21out on a bunt? You know what I like? If it's wrong, you're wrong. It doesn't necessarily matter,
02:27you know, like the kind of player you're wrong on, but I think that this team is positioned now to,
02:33or not positioned, but out of necessity, they have to take swings on high skill,
02:39high ceiling kind of types. And you know, the skillset was tantalizing, right? 6'7",
02:45got a good shot. He can skate well for a big man, which I think is the most noticeable
02:50trait that you see. Like a lot of times, like when you get a guy who's 6'5", 6'6", whatever,
02:55like the most common thing you hear is he's got to work on his skating. Well, this guy already
03:00has that part of his game down, or at least to the point where it's not a problem necessarily.
03:05So I like the makeup and I like the idea of swinging for the talent versus the,
03:11ah, he'll be a good third liner who can play some solid two-way hockey. It's like, no, that
03:15this team, they can find a thousand of those. They have a thousand of those. You got to get
03:19the skill. So from that standpoint, I respect the, the courage of making this pick, uh, which
03:25may have been made for them. You know, you look at some of the trades leading up to that pick,
03:30namely Utah, uh, jumping in front of the Bruins and grabbing a two-way center out of the OHL,
03:35which you're like, okay, like that could have been the Bruins pick you would think. So, um,
03:41I respect the approach more than anything else. And if they're wrong, they're wrong, but
03:46I'd rather go down swinging than, than not at all. So to speak.
03:50Yeah. You look at like who Utah takes number 24, Cole, Cole, uh, Bowden. I think that's how
03:55you say his last name, but, uh, that's kind of the complete inverse, right. Of what LaTurno is
04:00because like, I think Cole Bowden is one of those guys that you look at his skillset. He's already
04:05a really good detailed player, a good two-way player for easy to map out, right? Like future
04:12third line center, maybe he's above that, right? Like you never really know, but you can kind of
04:16comfortably chart out what he could be, uh, in LaTurno is kind of the complete opposite.
04:21Like, and it doesn't feel right saying, I guess, boom or bust, because like, if he becomes,
04:25you know, Michael Rasmussen or, uh, Brezo or like, even like Brian, like Brian Boyle,
04:31you looked at like how he skated at like BC, like, like six, eight. And again, like became
04:36a useful kind of more of a bottom six player. So like, even if, uh, LaTurno is not page Thompson,
04:42you can probably still get value from him. But as you said, I think if you're the Bruins and
04:46you're so desperate for just that top six game changing talent, like you've got plenty of guys
04:52that could eventually slot into these roles. I look at like Brezo who kind of fell as backwards
04:57into a roster spot. And you have those kinds of players go for the guy in LaTurno who if all works
05:02out well at five years down the road, and he's this six, seven forward scoring 35 goals, you
05:07want to have the player that everyone else in the NHL looks at. And it's like, damn, where the hell
05:11are we going to get a guy like that? Right? Like that's, I think if you're the Bruins and as you
05:15said before, Ty, like, it's not that you have the luxury of doing it, but like now you, when you
05:21have these opportunities, you need to add the guys that could hit as opposed to the safe.
05:25Plug and play players. Cause you can find those guys. You can find the Heinens. You can find
05:30these players on the market that can shrug your bottom six, but go for a guy in LaTurno who
05:35could be something there for you. Yeah. And the other part of it too,
05:38is that, and this is the part of drafting a player like this that I hope the Bruins
05:43understand and accept is that you're going to have to be patient. Like, he's not going to be a guy
05:48who, I mean, maybe he is, and if he is, that's fantastic, but it's going to be a longer kind
05:53of developmental curve for him. Given some of these things we've talked about, given the size,
05:58the rod and this playing in Canadian prep, you know, which is a step below the OHL or the CHL,
06:03whatever league you want to pick. And out of the gate, he's probably going to be playing
06:09bottom six minutes at BC. I would imagine it's, I don't know if he's the kind of guy who comes in
06:14and immediately gets top six kind of minutes there. I know he's, he's going in a year early,
06:19so maybe he gets a slight bump, but, you know, I don't know if he's going to be top line for them,
06:24but, you know, having some patience and, and, and understanding it's going to take a little bit,
06:29you know, a little while, I hope they have that kind of patience. You know,
06:33we we've kind of read a lot of the comps or tage Thompson, you know,
06:37tage Thompson took a long time to get going. Right. Like it, it took what it took,
06:42I think his third or fourth full season in the NHL before he started to really be like that,
06:47I think it was 30 goals or 35 goals, whatever it was got traded by St. Louis. Obviously
06:54now St. Louis isn't going to complain. They got Ryan O'Reilly out of that deal. So
06:57pretty good trade for them looking at, you know, the, the banner they have in St. Louis, but
07:02patience is going to be the name of the game. And so I hope the Bruins have that patience and don't
07:07lose sight of the things that we're talking about and what he can be for their team.
07:10Because I think that's going to be, you know, out of all the first round picks they've drafted
07:15under the Sweeney regime. I feel like this guy's going to require the most patience. I think of
07:21that group, to be honest with you. Yeah, absolutely. I looked it up
07:24yesterday. Cause I was like, I remember that tage Thompson like took a little while, like
07:28he was good at, at UConn that you could see maybe he's a top six potential there, but he had in his
07:34first, you know, like three and a half years, he played 145 games total between St. Louis and
07:38Buffalo, 18 goals and 145. And we know Bruins fans and the patients there. If like, this is a
07:46guy who, when he's like, again, like 24, which is like, you know, Tate Thompson didn't take off
07:52till I think he's 20 age 25 season. If Dean Letourneau is here at 24 and he's got 11 goals
07:59and 18 assists and people are freaking out, like you don't want to be the guy that jettisons a
08:03player like that too early. And all of a sudden he goes somewhere else and all of a sudden he's got
08:0731 goals and he's, he's, you know, showing off that skillset. It's almost like we all see,
08:12especially with these kinds of players at that size that are like mapped out as powerful words.
08:16You have to give them more time to fill out, learn the game. But for these guys like Thompson
08:21and Letourneau who are that size, but it's, they're not like powerful words. Like it's just
08:25kind of part of, you know, it's a compliment their size. It's not like their main identity,
08:29right? Like it's so much other things with it. Those guys are so unique that you just need to
08:34carve out as much time as possible. Like, hell, it would be great if he went to BC this year and
08:38he's got 31 points or something in 40 something games for a really good Eagles team. But don't
08:44be surprised if he's again, a middle six, a bottom six player with 11 points as a freshman,
08:50like it's a huge transition going from prep to hockey East in one year. So but that doesn't
08:56diminish, you know, even if it's going to be maybe a longer development timeline,
09:00you got to stay the course with a guy like that, that if he is something you want to be the team
09:05looking at it years from now, being like, we gave up on that guy a year too early and he's
09:08a top six fixture somewhere else. And it also speaks to the idea that the Bruins are not the
09:13Bruins of say four years ago when they were drafting guys with the hope of, okay, how quick
09:18can they be? How quickly can they be ready? You know, like look at Fabian Lysel got taken on the
09:23first round in 2021, uh, played in Vancouver for a year and then was immediately thrown into the
09:28pro game. And I don't think it's necessarily hurt him. I think playing against men younger
09:35is going to help you, but it's not exactly like he's not fast track to the NHL at the same time.
09:40And it kind of just speaks to the idea of the Bruins are not the win now team. They were
09:46when they had Chara and Bergeron and crazy for the final five years of their career,
09:50like they're taking a more patient approach and, and it's, it's a bit jarring, like in a way,
09:57like, like to watch that transition happen in real time that they are no longer, you know,
10:02a team that is making draft picks to win now, or to use it as capital to win now, like they
10:08acknowledge the path in front of them and restocking that pipeline and, and, and being
10:14patient. And so now they're going to actually follow through with that, you know, and that's
10:18going to be, that's the part that's always tough for a team. You can say we're going to be patient,
10:21but executives, when they're coaching and executing, you know, executing for their job,
10:27like sometimes patients escapes them. Yeah, no, it'd be interesting to see how it plays out.
10:32Obviously a lot more to talk about with this draft class beyond just Letourneau and his,
10:35his potential there. But before we do that, Tyler, let's take a quick break.
10:38Yeah. From our good friends over at prize picks, the NBA finals are over and the Celtics are

12:09back to the show. Shout out once again to our good friends over at prize picks. Ty, before we dive
12:16into the remaining three draft picks that the Bruins selected, I did make a trade today as part
12:22of it but moving on from Jacob Lauco, a guy who became kind of a fourth line regular 60 games last
12:31year. They move him and their fourth round pick to move up 12 spots. Take Elliot Gronewald, a
12:38Vermont kid going to Quinnipiac next year. Also get Vinny Letary back, but I think he's kind of more of a
12:44probably Providence guy. You're going to plug in their top six guy. Hopefully helps a few other
12:48guys along down there. But looking just specifically at Lauco, we surprised at all with it because it
12:54felt like kind of the writing was on the wall, especially once the Bruins bring in a guy like
12:59Mark Castellic. Feels like there's room there that they're kind of banking more on
13:04him, Beecher, and Brezzo kind of being the new crew there moving forward.
13:09Yeah, you know, the writing was on the wall for me even before this. At Bruins breakup day, Jacob
13:16Lauco was the only guy not to speak. And you know, sometimes you read into that, other times you don't.
13:24And it wasn't like, oh, he's definitely gone now. But I don't know, like the way that they
13:29utilized him late in the year, the way that he was in and out of the lineup, seemingly no matter
13:33what happened results wise for him, I thought was really bizarre. You know, you look at him
13:40in the Toronto series, he draws a penalty. He really was a thorn in their side, it felt like.
13:46And then they scratched him. And you're like, why? What's going on here? And he was only really put
13:52back in the lineup when the Bruins lost Jesper Boquist to injury. And so it was just odd usage,
13:59right? And I just feel like that they were changing the complexion of their team now.
14:05Now, how is that? How do they make up for his loss? Right? Like the Bruins have talked about,
14:10and that sounds weird talking about a fourth liner. I understand that. But like
14:14the Bruins entered the offseason talking about getting faster.
14:18Right. Okay. Well, Jacob Blanco is probably your fastest bottom six option besides Johnny Beecher
14:23and their complexion of their fourth line typically requires two speedier guys.
14:28So are they changing the complexion of that fourth line? That's one thing I wonder.
14:32And secondly, Loco was great at drawing penalties. So who takes up that mantle,
14:37right? Because like that, like that is something that is important in today's game.
14:42Every elite team has a great power play or a power play that can score a timely goal
14:46or just bleed clock essentially. Right. And so how do they make up for that? That's what I want
14:51to know. But ultimately they saw a guy they wanted with that defenseman. And they said,
14:57he's not going to be here in 12 picks. Let's get them. And so to make that kind of move,
15:03a, you got to be right about it, but B two, if you're going to have to cut from your pool,
15:09it's not the worst to have to cut from a guy that internally, to your point,
15:13they may look at and say, we can replace him just fine. Right. Yeah, exactly. So a tough,
15:18tough loss logo. Great guy to talk to you about the Lord of the Rings game of Thrones,
15:24the MCU, great guy, great guy in general. So he will be missed. Um, but best talk to him
15:30over in Minnesota, moving forward, hopefully he'll be able to carve out more of a regular role there.
15:34I feel like he will be grading. He's like a great, just like, especially for what that contract is
15:38a great, just bottom six guy to have anyway, because I feel like the number one thing with
15:42him energy, which again, just on the Toronto series, like drawing penalties, laying hits,
15:46there's value in that if he keeps on doing that. So, uh, wishing the best of luck to him,
15:50uh, moving forward, but, uh, Ty looking at kind of the overall, uh, draft class for the Bruins.
15:56Again, it's only four guys. Uh, as we said, Olaturno, uh, Grunenwald, uh, you know,
16:01a defense may be more known as a defensive defenseman, uh, Jonathan Morello, uh, a guy
16:07in the Ontario junior hockey league, uh, still 17, doesn't turn 18 until I think the very end
16:12of July, the guy was a little bit, maybe more upside than people expect. He's going to go to
16:17clocks in two years from now, he's going to the USHL next year. And then, uh, Loke Johansson,
16:22who, you know, you've got a good player when his like elite prospects page is him
16:26smashing a guy into the glass. It's like the, there's no video of him. I already tried looking
16:30for it. It's crazy. Yeah. There's no one has recorded anything in Sweden. We don't know what
16:35the hell's going on over there, but the one photo we have is him obliterating a guy into glass. So,
16:40you know, you've got a good guy there. Um, looking at just the overall approach from the Bruins,
16:45whether it's how they're structuring the decor, uh, with, you know, it seems like they're clearly
16:50targeting size or, you know, upfront with their forwards. Uh, what have you seen in terms of how
16:56they've approached this draft class and how you can kind of maybe read the TV as to how they're,
17:00they're, they're trying to build up this pipeline once again.
17:04Yeah. Um, you know, Dean Letourneau is, is sort of the, the exception, but they're following the
17:12blueprint they've laid out now for, I think three straight drafts where it's bigger body defensemen
17:17and forwards who the first thing you read is speed or high motor, um, you know, talking about Morello,
17:25he, he, I always want to say Morelli cause that's a, that's a side of my family. Uh,
17:29talking about Morello here, he, uh. Rage against the machine.
17:32Yeah. Um, no, but, uh, so, uh, he actually won a fast, a skater competition at the all-star game
17:41in the OJHL. Um, he's a guy who, again, like you, you read about him and motor comes up high
17:48intensity, speed, good skater. This kind of fits the bill with Chris Pelosi, who was a high motor
17:54type. This fits the bill with Matthew Potra, a gri, a greasy high motor kind of center. Uh,
18:02so this seems like it's their MO moving forward is you want, you don't care about their size
18:07necessarily, but you want forwards who can skate well, have a high motor, have a little bit of
18:12grease to their game. And then you're going to have a big defense defensive core behind them.
18:16And so this is the plan it's been laid out now for three or four drafts in a row that, that
18:21this is their prototype for forwards. This is their prototype for defensemen and they're building
18:26out their pool that way. And, and it helps you can add some natural scoring talent that like they
18:31did in the first round, but, um, this is their blueprint, right? And I think, you know, it's
18:37comparable to some of the other blueprints you see around the league. It feels like Tampa has become
18:41a much smaller team upfront, but they all got motors and they all can fly. And so you just,
18:48you have to hope that they're not behind the eight ball or behind where the game may be
18:52trending in that regard. But I think this is sort of like their identity or their future identity
18:58is coming to focus here. I think all these last couple of drafts. Yeah, it does seem like when
19:02you look at just how many teams have a pretty similar blueprint in terms of big mobile defensemen,
19:08some physicality, some size, uh, and forwards that, you know, you'll take the,
19:13the blend of size and speed, but just guys that have a high motor can impact the game,
19:17can make things happen, kind of make something happen out of nothing. Um, that does seem like
19:22that's a good strategy to kind of follow in terms of just trying to find ways to get the inside edge.
19:28So, uh, encouraging see from the Bruins in that regard, um, Ty, before we wrap this one up,
19:33we're also going to talk very quickly, looking ahead at, uh, the next couple of days,
19:37on Sweeney's comments earlier on this week in Vegas, before we do that,
19:41take a quick break here from our good friends over at Game Time Tickets.

21:32Shout out once again to our good friends over at Game Time Tickets. All right, Ty, we won't dive
21:38too far into free agency outlook. We've already done that before. By the time this episode drops,
21:43we're going to have probably a signing or two already to start breaking down or start looking
21:49ahead at. But looking at Dawn Sweeney's comments on Thursday from Las Vegas, I think he spoke for
21:56about 30 minutes, kind of laid the groundwork for how they're approaching free agency,
22:01how they're approaching, obviously, new goalie Jonas Corporasolo, all those things. What was kind
22:05of your main quick takeaway from his overall spiel or how he was mapping out this offseason?
22:12Yeah, I think the biggest takeaway for me is they're going to get a center.
22:16Now, who that guy is, the rumblings of a lot of Island Home have only gotten stronger. We'll see
22:24if he's their number one target, but it does feel like they're being very, I don't want to say
22:32cocky, but they're confident in their approach, right? They're pretty much shutting the door on
22:38Jake Dabrowski, it sounds like, and they're confident that they can get an upgrade. Now,
22:43is that an upgrade at the middle and then you move Pavel Zaka over back to wing?
22:48Like, we're going to have to wait and see, but I think there's a confidence that Don Sweeney is
22:54exuding at that press conference that makes me think they got some big fish sort of lined up,
23:01or they're legit hopeful they can get a big fish. And I think it has to be in the middle.
23:07I'd wonder about a guy like Steven Samkos as well.
23:10I feel like.
23:11It just feels like they're going to make a big signing. And then the biggest question though,
23:17and it relates to Jonas Corposalo as well, is like, do they have the money to make two big
23:22signings? Like, can they get, you know, a tier one guy and a tier two guy, or do they have to get
23:28one tier one guy and then a couple of tier three guys? Like, that's what I kind of wonder about
23:33with this team. And you only have so much cap space, right? And you got 20 something million.
23:39Swayman's going to eat up a big chunk of that, probably just under a third of it,
23:43or maybe a third of it for that matter. And so do you have the extra million,
23:48million and a half you might need to secure two notable free agents versus one and some depth
23:54filler? That's what I really wonder about with this team, but it sounds like their confidence,
23:58like they're confident they're going to get a pretty good guy this summer.
24:02Yeah, that, that was my, I mean, my main takeaway from it was like listening to what he says,
24:06like immediately talks about middle of the ice upgrading there, even mentions like upgrading
24:10the defense and it's like, and how they have to, you know, not just be aggressive. He's like,
24:15we were going to be, we're going to attack. We're going to do all these things. I'm like,
24:18again, not getting too far ahead of myself, but I'm like, are you trying to like
24:22sign Lindholm and Stamkos? Like, are you going to have the money to do that? Like, are you like,
24:26you know, is it Lindholm and Anthony Duclair and Alec Martinez, which seems more realistic,
24:32or is it, are you legitimately trying to, you know, even if it's like Lindholm and Toffoli,
24:37right? Like that would make sense as a replacement, but are you trying to swing
24:40for the fences where, for someone more, the fact that you mentioned like the defense,
24:44it's like, are you trying to like sign like Brady Shea? Are you trying to get like another
24:47dude to, you know, pair with McAvoy or something like that? So it doesn't seem like it's beyond
24:53just like, all right, we have got the cap space we're hopeful to add. It's like, no, we're going
24:56to try to steal some headlines on, on Monday, on July 1st. So it's very, yeah, it's very interesting
25:03to see like what they're approaching and how the money's going to, to map out. Cause again,
25:07it'd be a lot of fun if you get Lindholm and the Stamkos, it makes you an already good team that
25:13much better, but is the money going to work? That's the biggest question, right?
25:17Yeah. And you know, I, I wonder if there's an element here of the Bruins saying, you know what,
25:23like let's focus on getting two high impact forwards and we can score our way out of our
25:28problems. If we think that we're one left shot D short of having an ideal grouping,
25:34you can always make a trade in season as well. If there are guys out there that peak your interest,
25:38but I think the biggest thing that I want the Bruins to, to do on July 1. And this isn't,
25:45this is the theme of what we've talked about to this point. Have a little bit of patience,
25:49get your big fish, try to get another one, but if you don't, Hey, July 5th, prices start to drop,
25:55man. There will be a good player out there who is unsigned, who you can get for 2 million instead
26:00of four and a half. And so that's something that the Bruins, I think a veteran GM like Don Sweeney
26:06should be mindful of is not blowing all your money on day one. It's great to be part of the party,
26:12but if you're part of the party, but you don't get anybody you actually want, it's a bit of a waste.
26:16Right? Like I go back to 2021 when they had all this money, like we've got to spend all this
26:21money. And it's like, well, maybe you don't have to spend all of it. You can save a little bit of
26:25it. So I just, that's, we've talked about before, but that's my biggest hope is just don't blow it
26:30all on July 1, unless you thought you're getting what I would consider to be your one, two, and
26:34three targets. Right? No, exactly. So we will definitely recap. We'll break down. There'll be
26:40no shortage of stuff to talk about this upcoming week. It's going to be,
26:43dare I say a shit show die in terms of the amount of news. Yeah. There's going to be way too much
26:48stuff. We're going to die or Dean Letourneau is going to like have two people talking to him
26:52on like the Thursday of there's a July 4th of dev camp, the final day or for that 4th of July
26:58scrimmage. But Ty, before we let you go, where can we read your stuff? Where can we hear you?
