00:00Miaou, miaou
00:23Henry's cat was doing his daily sleeping practice.
00:27It was a very useful skill to have in an emergency.
00:30First of all, he would write out a nice dream on a piece of paper,
00:34then put it under his pillow, close his eyes and pretend he was dreaming.
00:39His favourite dream was all about a multi-flavoured ice cream
00:43with 27 flavours piled up on top of each other.
00:46The problem was, how could he eat it?
00:49It was too high to start at the top and too difficult in the middle.
00:53Then he had a brilliant idea.
00:56He would bite off the bottom of the cone and suck the flavour through.
01:00This was the best part of the dream.
01:05But just as he got to the banana and onion, he heard his favourite sound.
01:09The ice cream van!
01:11He wasn't sure whether it was part of a dream or not.
01:14And was just about to practice sleeping again when he saw Chris Rabbit waving two choc-ices
01:19he had just brought from the ice cream van.
01:22Oh, look what I've got! Look what I've got!
01:24It was a dream come true!
01:26Even if it was a pretend dream.
01:28But then, something even stranger happened.
01:31Henry's cat noticed a TV advertisement for the very ice cream they were eating.
01:44Oh, that's clever!
01:46How did they know we were eating their ice cream, Chris?
01:50Oh, they didn't know! They didn't know!
01:53It was just what they call a coincidence!
01:55They've got lots of cartoons like that!
01:57In fact, the people who make these cartoons get all their ice cream free!
02:01And for nothing! Without paying for it!
02:04Henry's cat thought about it.
02:06The idea of free ice cream seemed a very nice sort of job to have.
02:10I wondered if he could get a job like that.
02:13Oh, I think I'd like that sort of job.
02:16How do you do it?
02:17Oh, it's easy! It's easy!
02:19You just have to be a cartoon animator!
02:22Oh, what's a cartoon animator?
02:26Oh, they're the ones that do all the funny drawings!
02:29Do you know it takes 947 drawings to go from here to here?
02:36And it takes three and a half persons 18 months to do!
02:41Not including holidays and overtime!
02:44It seemed like a lot of work.
02:46But it also seemed like a lot of ice cream.
02:50Henry's cat decided he would like to be an animator after all.
02:54Oh, I think I'd like that sort of job.
02:57How can I learn to do it?
02:59Oh, it's easy! It's easy!
03:01You just take a correspondence course!
03:04And with that, Chris Rabbit dashed off!
03:09And came back with a magazine!
03:11Oh, this magazine has got lots of correspondence courses in it!
03:15I'll read them out for you!
03:17You too can be a Prime Minister!
03:20Just send for our Prime Minister Kit!
03:22Contains handy stick-on smiles,
03:25book of promises,
03:27record of cheers,
03:30and a teat of mud for mud-slinging!
03:33Hundreds of satisfied customers are now running their own countries!
03:38There you are! There you are!
03:40Why don't you become a Prime Minister?
03:42Oh, I'd rather be an animator if you don't mind.
03:46All right! All right!
03:48Oh, look again!
03:50Here we are!
03:51Learn to hang-glide in the privacy of your own front room!
03:55Send 75p now!
03:57Here's another one!
03:58Why not be the first person in your street to rule the world?
04:03Oh, a Clinton Jade Priest knows how to get rich quick!
04:07Send 100 pounds for details!
04:10Oh, I think I'd just like to be an animator.
04:14I fancy all that ice cream, said Henry's cat.
04:18Here we are! Here we are!
04:20This is it!
04:21The Big Bob Animation Course!
04:24Satisfaction guaranteed!
04:26All your drawings back!
04:28Wow! It sounded just right!
04:31Henry's cat went and wrote for the course immediately.
04:35A few days later, the postman arrived with a big parcel!
04:39It was the animation kit!
04:41Henry's cat was very excited!
04:43He could hardly wait to get started!
04:45Inside the kit were all the things he needed!
04:48One giant, fluorescent rubber nose!
04:51An inflatable audience!
04:53A jar of cartoon sound effects!
05:00A rubber check!
05:02A pair of cartoon gloves!
05:04A lump-on-the-head mallet!
05:06A can of laughter!
05:09A stick-on joke hole!
05:14A dozen assorted funny characters!
05:17And the all-important electric ideas hat!
05:21There was even an animator's outfit!
05:24But first, he had to put up the camera!
05:30He was soon all ready to go!
05:32Except, of course, he didn't have any drawings!
05:35Except, of course, he didn't have any drawings yet!
05:39So he got a big pile of paper and a little book called How to Animate.
05:44It said...
05:46This book shows you all you have to know about how to become a very good animator.
05:54First, draw two faces, like this.
06:00Now, put face one on face two and flip the paper.
06:08You have now learnt to animate!
06:12Wow! Henry's cat was very proud of himself!
06:16He realised he must have a talent for this sort of thing!
06:20He then got very daring and tried out a lot of faces!
06:30In the next chapter it said...
06:32When you can draw a face, you must learn to draw a body to go with it.
06:43Over here!
06:48No! Over here!
06:54Henry's cat tried lots of different bodies for practice.
06:57And also different hats and things.
07:00Henry's cat felt very pleased with his progress and went right on to the next chapter,
07:05which was how to make figures walk.
07:09It was not as easy as it looked!
07:12Henry's cat could see that this would need a lot of practice.
07:16Somehow or the other, it didn't seem quite right.
07:22But then, Henry's cat had a brilliant idea!
07:25He turned the drawing sideways!
07:27That looked much better!
07:30It still didn't look quite right, though.
07:33Henry's cat thought he'd better go on to the next lesson and practice this one later.
07:38The book said...
07:39The next lesson is about sound effects.
07:43This tape contains the following sounds.
07:47A...
07:49A...
07:51A...
07:53A...
07:55A...
07:57A...
07:59A...
08:01A...
08:03And many more!
08:05This was very interesting!
08:07Henry's cat thought he'd try out some right away!
08:10You can put these together like this!
08:21He was very pleased with his animation.
08:23He put his film into a can and decided to go and look for work.
08:33He tried lots of studios.
08:38It seemed nobody wanted his work.
08:41His genius would be lost to the world.
08:44Then he had a brilliant idea!
08:46He would go to Big Bob's Bumper Cartoon Company and ask for a job!
08:53A nice lady receptionist gave him a cup of tea with two straws.
08:59Henry's cat didn't have to wait long.
09:01Big Bob soon arrived on his bike wearing gold-plated bicycle clips,
09:06a symbol of all successful animators.
09:09He gave Henry's cat his card and introduced himself.
09:13Then they went into the viewing theatre to see the film.
09:24Big Bob was very impressed and said Henry's cat could start right away
09:30and gave him an ice cream in advance on pay!
09:33This was very interesting!
09:35It was a big job!
09:38Henry's cat had to make a TV commercial advertising Wibble's Wobbly Jelly,
09:44which had a better wobble than any other jelly.
09:48First, Wibble's Wobbly Jelly and Brand X Jelly were put on a wobble meter.
09:54Then, an elephant jumped on the floor.
09:59It proved that Wibble's Wobbly Jelly was 56% more wobbly than Brand X
10:06with bigger, longer-lasting wobbles.
10:09Henry's cat's brilliant idea for a cartoon was to have a man and a lady come on and say,
10:14We like Wibble's Wobbly Jelly. It's got a wobble that's nice to gobble.
10:20Then the queen, or someone even more important, would give Wibble's Wobbly Jelly first prize.
10:27Henry's cat started drawing right away.
10:30It was not long before he had all the drawings ready to shoot.
10:34He put them all in order and took them along to the camera to be shot.
10:39There were a lot of other drawings ready to be shot, all waiting on the table.
10:43Henry's cat put his on one end.
10:45At that moment, he heard his favourite sound again.
10:49The ice cream van!
10:51He dashed over and opened the window to see where it was.
10:54Unfortunately, it was quite a windy day,
10:57and the wind blew all the drawings off the table and all over the place.
11:02Henry's cat quickly shut the window and started to pick up the drawings.
11:06There were his own and other people's drawings all muddled up.
11:10He soon put them in a big, neat pile, but they were all mixed up.
11:15Oh, never mind. I expect the cameraman will see which ones are which and sort them out, he said to himself.
11:23Well, the cameraman didn't know the drawings had been muddled up and just went ahead and shot them.
11:30The film went to the television people for broadcasting.
11:33Henry's cat and Big Bob and all his friends sat down in front of the TV set to watch.
11:39Well, what do you think they saw?
11:42The drawings had been all muddled up with other advertisements about socks and dog food.
11:48So Wibble's Wobbly Jelly was mixed up with a dog wearing socks,
11:53and the cartoon man came on and said,
11:55Wibble's Wobbly Jelly is good for your feet.
12:00And all dogs love it.
12:04Well, Big Bob was furious.
12:07If there was one thing he couldn't stand, it was his cartoons being laughed at.
12:12And he was just about to get very angry indeed with Henry's cat when the phone rang.
12:20It was a man speaking in a very posh voice who said,
12:24Oh, hello, Big Bob. Hello, little boy.
12:28I must say the film academy was delighted to see your experimental film.
12:35It's an entirely new art form, totally beyond human comprehension.
12:41We are nominating you for an academy award, the Nobel Prize for Animation,
12:46and we are making you an honorary gold guide.
12:50Well, this change matters entirely.
12:53Big Bob was so pleased he invited everyone round for a celebration.
12:58Henry's cat was amazed at his film being nominated for a big art award and said,
13:03Oh, I don't know much about art, but I do know what I like.
13:08And with that, he took an extra large lump of chocolate cake,
13:12smothered in whipped cream and walnuts.
13:33Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
