Pat and Matt discuss Tom Brady's induction and a few leftover takes from the 2 days on minicamp.

00:00:00You're listening to the Patreon Nation podcast.
00:00:31All right, welcome into another edition of the Patriot Nation podcast.
00:00:34As always, it's your guy, Pat Lane here with my man, Matt St.
00:00:37Gene, and it's been one heck of a week for the red, for the, uh, excuse me,
00:00:43for Boston sports fans, Tom Brady gets inducted last night.
00:00:46The Boston Celtics are up three, nothing in the NBA finals.
00:00:51I don't know what's going on with my voice here.
00:00:53Uh, three, nothing in the NBA finals.
00:00:55And, uh, the red socks are like back to 500, I guess.
00:00:59I don't know who cares.
00:00:59But they're always, Hey, that's cool.
00:01:02There, they always go one game below 500 and then win the
00:01:04next game, as far as I can tell.
00:01:06I'm following from Twitter.
00:01:07I haven't tuned into a game since like April.
00:01:10They just, here's the best part.
00:01:11They just lost a series to the worst team in baseball.
00:01:15Like by far the worst team in baseball, a team that had lost 14.
00:01:20Eight, 19 straight games.
00:01:21I don't even know some outrageous amount of, of, of games they had lost in a row.
00:01:25The red Sox lost two straight to that team.
00:01:27And then they proceeded by beating the best team in the NL.
00:01:31So, you know, I mean, who knows?
00:01:33Um, but no one really cares about the red Sox anyways.
00:01:36Well, no, nobody knows what they're doing.
00:01:38Cause you know, there's no red Sox fans.
00:01:40If anyone part of it, that's a great point.
00:01:42That's a great point.
00:01:43I love all at TD garden and all jobs.
00:01:46And that's the best part of it, right.
00:01:48Is that there was that tweet and I don't know, you know, if you guys saw that
00:01:51tweet that, um, on Wednesday night, that was like bosses, the best sports town in
00:01:56America, because they've sold out two arenas and there's zero games being played
00:01:59in those arenas.
00:02:00And Michael Hurley quote tweeted and was like, yeah, but the red Sox had a home
00:02:03game and no one was there and nobody cared.
00:02:05I just, I thought that was hysterical.
00:02:07So it turns out, turns out your owner coming out after being criticized for two
00:02:12full years now, minimum of, for not spending enough money saying, eh,
00:02:18everybody's got the same chance.
00:02:20Who cares?
00:02:21Does not drive people to the ballpark.
00:02:24That just, yeah, I can't even, I didn't want to get into that schmuck.
00:02:28Um, but you know, but Hey, we're here.
00:02:31It's, it's a great time.
00:02:32The red, the Celtics almost blew it last night, almost blew it, but they didn't
00:02:37blow it.
00:02:37And that to me, that kind of, you know, they, they were just lacking that.
00:02:45I feel like the last few years, I know Luca fouled out and whatever, but like
00:02:49they were lacking that, like this was a complete meltdown in the fourth quarter.
00:02:55They were up 21, all of a sudden they're up one and you're like, Oh my God,
00:03:00they're going to lose this game.
00:03:01Like all the momentum's gone the other way.
00:03:03They're going to lose.
00:03:04They're on the road, tough environment, like who knows what's going to happen.
00:03:08And then they end up pulling out the victory.
00:03:10And, and I was impressed by that.
00:03:12And to me, that was almost, it was almost more impressive than going up.
00:03:1621 was the fact that they were able to stop that slide.
00:03:21And, you know, part of that was Tatum and a lot of that was Jalen Brown.
00:03:24Tatum had a very nice dunk, um, in, in mixed in there as well.
00:03:28But, you know, look, this is what they've done all year long and
00:03:33this is what, who they've become.
00:03:35And I think that, you know, whether it's the Jays figuring it out, finally,
00:03:38whether it's true holiday adds another element there, whether it's, you know,
00:03:42whatever it might be, whether it's Joe Missoula, I don't know, but they've
00:03:47figured it out and they're one win away from a championship.
00:03:50No, one's ever come down from three.
00:03:52Oh, uh, to win.
00:03:54So I think we can safely kind of eliminate, uh, Dallas.
00:03:57And I, I just feel like unless the refs literally hand the game to Dallas
00:04:02tomorrow night, I don't see how they win game for when I, one thing I appreciate
00:04:08about how this team has grown is the way they stay steady when things get tough.
00:04:14Um, cause you know, in past years when the other team starts making a run, you
00:04:20know, you're going to get really bad decisions with the ball and awful things
00:04:23happening and, you know, for the most part, even when things weren't working
00:04:27and they kind of stuck to their game and they've done that all post-season, I
00:04:30think it speaks to the buy-in that you've gotten with the coach too, because
00:04:34it's a whole lot of, Hey, like, we're not, we're not necessarily trying to win
00:04:37each and every possession we're trying to win games and within games, like we're
00:04:41going to have runs and that they are going to have runs and you just have to
00:04:44stick to what you're doing because we believe that over the course of not
00:04:48five minutes, not 10 minutes, not 12 minutes, not 24 minutes, but 48 minutes.
00:04:53It's going to make us the better team.
00:04:55Uh, and time and time again, it has all post-season.
00:04:57So.
00:04:58Uh, it's crazy that they're 15 and doing the playoffs and Kristaps
00:05:01Porzingis is out like he's played six games.
00:05:05Uh, Steve, I think this team can play better than they have.
00:05:10And we're looking at possibly 16 and two in the playoffs.
00:05:13That is, uh, unbelievable performance.
00:05:16And I will say, you know, scary to see the other team come back.
00:05:19You know, we've never once talked about on this podcast, the fact that the Rams
00:05:23came back from down 17, three, 36.
00:05:27We've never talked about how the Panthers came back from down, whatever it was in
00:05:32Superbowl 38 to take the lead in the four or, uh, we've never talked about, well,
00:05:37then the Eagles didn't really make that, but, uh, you know, we've never talked
00:05:43about how bad the third quarter was in Superbowl 49, you know, it doesn't, how
00:05:48you get there doesn't necessarily matter.
00:05:50Like it's, that was a good team.
00:05:52They're on the ropes.
00:05:53They're at home.
00:05:53Of course, they're going to make a run at some point.
00:05:56You held up.
00:05:56That's all that matters.
00:05:57So hopefully you finish it out in game four Friday night.
00:06:02Uh, that bring that trophy home to Boston.
00:06:04Give the duck votes.
00:06:05That's right.
00:06:05That's right, baby.
00:06:07So, and listen, I think your point is kind of well-made and I think it does segue
00:06:11nicely into where we are right now, right?
00:06:15With Tom Brady being inducted into the Patriots hall of fame and you take a look
00:06:22at those teams and the coach, not that Joe Mazzuola is Bill Belichick, like let's
00:06:27pump the brakes, but like, you know, you take a look at the coach and the
00:06:31players that were there and how they always kind of stayed even keel.
00:06:36And everyone talked about Brady and how he brought that passion and desire
00:06:43and work ethic with him everywhere.
00:06:45And they just played their game nonstop over and over again.
00:06:50And that's what, one of the things that made him the greatest of all
00:06:54time, um, a litany of things, but certainly one of the things that was
00:06:58his ability to perform in the clutch, no matter what's happened before, no
00:07:02matter how many times it's happened.
00:07:03That Saints game is a great example.
00:07:05You know what, with the, um, uh, Cambro Tompkins catch in 2013, like
00:07:10they had tried twice in the last few minutes of that game to, to get
00:07:16the lead back and failed twice.
00:07:17Brady had thrown an interception on one of those drives and we're
00:07:20thinking the game's over and they get the ball back because of their defense.
00:07:23And, you know, drive it on the field and score a touchdown.
00:07:25And it's like, those are the types of things where, yeah, sure.
00:07:29We're back against the wall.
00:07:30We can't do what it hasn't been done before.
00:07:33And, you know, maybe we're not able to do it, but they figure it out somehow.
00:07:362009 against the bills where they scored two touchdowns, 2013 against the, against
00:07:40the, uh, Browns, they were covered onside kick, right?
00:07:46Yup.
00:07:47Yup.
00:07:47So it's all those, it's all those different things that, you know, that
00:07:50happened, that went into it, that, you know, made Brady who he was.
00:07:54And of course my Belichick, who he was as well.
00:07:56And, and, you know, made the Patriots such a winning team for 20 some odd years.
00:07:59And, and we're seeing that with the Celtics now, which is really cool.
00:08:02And that's this year.
00:08:05So who knows if that continues, but that's how you build
00:08:08a dynasty with guys like that.
00:08:10And if they can continue to play this way and continue to be as even
00:08:13killed as they are and as talented as they are, there's no stopping them in
00:08:17the next few years to, of, you know, winning multiple championships or
00:08:21at least getting to multiple finals.
00:08:23Yeah.
00:08:23I mean, if they're healthy next year, the expectation is at
00:08:25least that you make the final.
00:08:26Obviously when you get to the finals, anything can happen, but you know,
00:08:30they're, they're constructed as a great team.
00:08:32And you talk about the group that we saw out there last night is last year's
00:08:38team, but without Brogdon, without smart, without Rob Williams plus drew holiday.
00:08:45Yeah.
00:08:45Like it's a lot of this as internal development, you know, Derek
00:08:49white, taking a step up Tatum improving so much as an all around player, the
00:08:54way he sets up everybody else on this team, uh, Jalen Brown making his
00:08:59handle better, becoming a more confident player playing freely.
00:09:02Well, both ends of the floor, Peyton Pritchard, Sam Houser, Sam Houser
00:09:08playing defense, like Sam Houser shooting was great last night, but
00:09:11playing defense, like, what are we talking about at an incredibly high
00:09:15level, um, and in some ways, you know, it's to bring it back to the Patriots.
00:09:19It's like, all right.
00:09:20Yeah.
00:09:20You don't have the soup Tom breeze for Superbowl ring without, you know,
00:09:25Antoine Harris making big plays in the games and J.
00:09:30R.
00:09:30Redmond.
00:09:31Um, and I'm trying to think of some of the other names that were involved,
00:09:34you know, not a lot of guys got touchdowns in that playoff run, but during
00:09:37the season, you know, Terry Glenn gave them stuff during the regular season.
00:09:40Jermaine Wiggins.
00:09:42Yeah.
00:09:43And it's like, it's as Brady said, it's a team thing.
00:09:47You can't do it without the team.
00:09:49Um, and I think, you know, Brady said a lot of the things that I think we have
00:09:52been saying when the Brady Belichick debate comes up, like it's a team thing.
00:09:56It's Brady and a Belichick and all of the other people who
00:09:59helped make this what it was.
00:10:00That's why you had so many present and former players at that event.
00:10:07Uh, so just, it was incredible.
00:10:10I know I, I couldn't be there in person.
00:10:12How was it to actually be there and see it was, it was so incredible.
00:10:18It was so incredible.
00:10:19It was just an unbelievable night.
00:10:22Um, one of the best nights I've ever had at Gillette stadium, just
00:10:26a, just such a unique thing to, um, I almost don't like so much happened.
00:10:33I like, don't even know where to start, right?
00:10:34Like, do you start with, you know, Brady and Belichick?
00:10:38Do you start with, you know, Bill bird?
00:10:40You start with Jay Z, they're live performing public service
00:10:43announcement and Tom Brady walking out to it and, you know, all of those
00:10:48different things and the craft just did such a great job of, of, of doing it.
00:10:51But there were so many moments.
00:10:54And I think one of the things that, that resonated with me was something
00:10:57that blood so said to, to Brady, not that he's the worst backup quarterback
00:11:01in NFL history, um, but, but that, you know, he could have been an asshole.
00:11:08And the fans would have been in the stands, right?
00:11:10The, he won six Superbowls.
00:11:11He took him to nine, like we owe Tom Brady our happiness.
00:11:16Right.
00:11:17And of course it wasn't just him as, as you mentioned, but like
00:11:20he's Tom Brady's to go, right.
00:11:21So we would have shown out for him, but he was like the, the, you know, the
00:11:25hundred or more former teammates are here because of you, the guy, not you,
00:11:33the football player, because of you, the teammate and the person that you
00:11:36are.
00:11:37And I think that really resonated with me.
00:11:39And you hear that with, with Tom, when he's talking about it and he's, you
00:11:43know, he's in his, in his speech is shouting out the kitchen staff and the
00:11:50trainers and the, you know, equipment people and the people doing the laundry.
00:11:54And like, you know, when he had personal relationships with each one of those
00:12:00people and you hear about the, the time that he spent with those people that he
00:12:04didn't, he wasn't asking for limelight.
00:12:07He was just there building relationships and how every time he met a new teammate,
00:12:11he'd introduced him.
00:12:12Hey, I'm Tom.
00:12:12How's it going?
00:12:13Like we freaking know who you are, but like, but that's the point is that he
00:12:18wanted to be one of the guys.
00:12:19Right.
00:12:20And he went out of his way to do that and they went home and then said, Hey, you
00:12:24know, mom, I think Edelman was like, Hey mom, Tom Brady knows who I am, you know,
00:12:28like, but it's, you know, but that's kind of the whole point.
00:12:31That's what he's trying to do.
00:12:33And I think he did a really good job of that and it just shows through.
00:12:37And, um, man, it was just, Oh, it was, it was an incredible night.
00:12:41It looks, I think that was like one of the things that stood out when they all
00:12:46talk about Brady and they all talk about Belichick is the amount of accountability
00:12:51and respect that kind of went both ways for the whole team.
00:12:57Um, you know, if you're an unvaccinated free agent showing up to a team that
00:13:01already has three super bowl trophies with this quarterback, he's the one
00:13:06introducing himself to you.
00:13:09That makes you want to go run through a brick wall for the guy who's
00:13:12the one to make the team, but that's going to take it to another level.
00:13:14And also the fact that this guy was a team captain, you know, he did his
00:13:18homework, I'm sure Brady at some point before that is probably researching all
00:13:23of the undrafted free agents that they've signed, looking up pictures so he can
00:13:26recognize them when he sees them in the hallway, looking up fun facts about all
00:13:29of them, undoubtedly for at least some of the guys on offense, probably watching
00:13:33at least some highlights, some tape in there to get an idea of who this guy is
00:13:37and, and how they win and what they can bring to the team.
00:13:39And it's like, if that's what the leader is doing, if that's what the guy who's
00:13:43at the top, who, if he stopped working and rested on his laurels, nobody would
00:13:47care and he could probably still coast to being the greatest quarterback of all
00:13:50time, if that's what he's doing, that's a challenge to every single other person
00:13:55in that locker room to, to take their game to that level.
00:13:58And like, they talked about the, the Saturday night meetings where it's
00:14:02basically Brady, the coach, and so I'm like, first you bring in the offensive
00:14:05line and tell them, this is the mistake you made.
00:14:07This is a mistake you made.
00:14:07This is the one you made.
00:14:09And then he's doing, I said, the receivers as an accountability thing.
00:14:11And it sounds like, you know, Bill did versions of that with the defense as well.
00:14:15And I, we talked about the Patriot way for a while.
00:14:19And I feel like what the Patriot way really is, is incredible attention to
00:14:23detail when you play football, because of the amount of effort you put in.
00:14:27So you just make less mistakes in your opponents.
00:14:30You're going to avoid the dumb things that lose you football
00:14:33games more than your opponents.
00:14:35There's no better way to do that than having a elite defensive head coach who
00:14:40has that attention to detail with one unit and essentially a quarterback slash
00:14:44offensive coordinator who has that respect and attention to detail with the
00:14:47other unit, like, uh, it's you, you lose that and it's understandable how things
00:14:54went the way they did, uh, which is a Testament to how amazing Tom
00:14:58Brady is personally in the play.
00:14:59Yeah.
00:15:00And, you know, Belichick pointed that out, right.
00:15:02And he said, you know, in his B I thought Belichick had a fantastic speech.
00:15:06And there's some fan things that I think I obviously want to talk about,
00:15:10but, you know, when he mentioned the fact that it's a, it's the plays that
00:15:16Tom Brady didn't make that almost are his best place, right.
00:15:20The fact that he didn't make bad mistakes, that he didn't turn the ball
00:15:25over in big situations that he checked out of a play when he knew it wasn't
00:15:28going to work, that he, you know, decided to throw the ball away instead of
00:15:35trying to force it into triple coverage, that he not turning the ball over and
00:15:39giving them an opportunity to win the game that gets overlooked from time to time.
00:15:43Right.
00:15:44But farm is a guy that made a ton of mistakes was a gunslinger and
00:15:48threw it all over the place and threw a ton of interceptions.
00:15:51And he gets lauded for that because he threw a lot of touchdown passes and it's
00:15:55like, well, you know, and it, right.
00:15:57It was super entertaining, but like he only won one super bowl.
00:16:00Right.
00:16:00And it's like, part of the reason he only won one super bowl is
00:16:03because he made those mistakes.
00:16:04And Brady knew that they could have won a super bowl in oh nine.
00:16:10And he's in a field goal range, throwing the ball across his body
00:16:14over the middle of the field gets picked off and the saints end up
00:16:16winning that NFC championship game.
00:16:18Like that's, it's literally that.
00:16:21Same thing happened in oh seven.
00:16:22Stupid Packers.
00:16:23If we would play the Packers would have killed him in oh seven.
00:16:25And instead we play the giants.
00:16:27Yeah.
00:16:27Well, and I think they, um, I had took the loss of my train of
00:16:32thought and where I was going to go with that, but, oh, I, yeah.
00:16:34And I remember now Bill was talking about how he also loved the way Brady would
00:16:38bounce back because nobody's going to be perfect football's hard going to have
00:16:42bad moments.
00:16:42And he talked about how, you know, one, they knew they needed to go to one court
00:16:47and they went to Brady.
00:16:49He didn't have his best game.
00:16:50Against the range, but they knew they needed to go to one.
00:16:52So they committed to it.
00:16:53And the next game for you went out and had that point, the best game of his
00:16:56career, and that was something you saw from him time and time again.
00:17:00I can't off the top of my head.
00:17:02I can't really think of a single time.
00:17:03He had bad games back to back now that I can remember maybe 2019, if we want to
00:17:08talk about that and how rough things were at points that season, but even then I
00:17:12don't think he really had bad games back to back, uh, that, that crazy level of
00:17:18consistency that he brought in the way he elevated every human being around him.
00:17:23Uh, incredible.
00:17:25Incredible.
00:17:26Well, yeah, I agree.
00:17:27So, uh, by the way, Thad James Ray, Matt Nagan, hello.
00:17:31Thanks for coming through.
00:17:32And Nagan says, you know, 2007 is maybe the worst way to end a season.
00:17:35Obviously the worst loss in history of sports, but 17 years removed.
00:17:43Right.
00:17:44And I think what we can finally do, and it hurts like hell.
00:17:48It hurts like hell still, but I think what we can finally do is appreciate the
00:17:54greatness of that season and how incredible they were that year and, and how they
00:18:01changed the way that football was played that year.
00:18:05Um, and I, I just think that, you know, it was, it was something special.
00:18:10It's something that we haven't seen since I know Manning, you know, broke that
00:18:14record with, uh, with Denver a few years later in 2013, but I don't care like that
00:18:21to me, that's, that's the gold standard of offense.
00:18:23That was the most unbelievable offense I've ever seen.
00:18:26And, you know, obviously for them to lose like that is terrible, but like, I think
00:18:32I'm, I'm finally getting to the point where I can like appreciate what they did
00:18:36that year and just not think about the Superbowl, you know?
00:18:40Yeah.
00:18:41And I think you could see that when Randy gets up there and gets introduced and he
00:18:46gets that long standing ovation.
00:18:49Yeah.
00:18:49Um, and it was, he played, he played what?
00:18:53Three, three and a half years in New England is what it's amounting to.
00:18:58Two and a half.
00:18:58Cause you got traded in 2010.
00:19:01Yeah.
00:19:01So seven, eight.
00:19:02Oh yeah.
00:19:03Hello.
00:19:03Yep.
00:19:03Yeah.
00:19:04If I could count.
00:19:04We all, we all mentally discarded that.
00:19:07Oh, eight years.
00:19:08Sorry.
00:19:08Yeah.
00:19:08Right, right.
00:19:09Yeah.
00:19:10But he played three and a half years in New England.
00:19:12That's, that's a less than a rookie contract.
00:19:15Right.
00:19:15And they're come in and get that ovation.
00:19:19Um, I feel for him because I know he was the guy who early in his career and late
00:19:24in his career, bounced around the league a little bit.
00:19:26And I think it was trying to find where exactly he was home in the league and to
00:19:31come back for an event that isn't even for you and get that reception, um, must
00:19:36have been incredible for him.
00:19:38Yeah.
00:19:38You know what?
00:19:39And I, and I think I was chatting about this last night with my dad on the way
00:19:42home, the thing about him and of course it didn't end particularly well here.
00:19:50Um, and it really didn't kind of end well at a lot of places with Randy and,
00:19:54and, you know, I think he's regretted that at times and, and as other guys have
00:19:58to, same thing happened with Ty Law when he left here.
00:20:00Right.
00:20:00But he's never, he's been back, but he's never been back in this type of scenario
00:20:08where it's like, Hey, introducing Randy Moss to the crowd, like hasn't really
00:20:12been that type of scenario where we've been able to really, truly show our love
00:20:20and appreciation for him as a fan base.
00:20:22And so last night is one of those types of things where, you know, where
00:20:29he, where we were able to do that.
00:20:32And I think that he was a little overwhelmed because he wasn't expecting it.
00:20:35Right.
00:20:36He wasn't expecting it.
00:20:37And I think we just, it was, it was a real moment.
00:20:42It was a real moment for us to say thank you to him, you know, for, for what he
00:20:47did and the amazing, you know, play that he gave us for three and a half years.
00:20:52And that's, you know, it's one of those hard things that like, it's tough.
00:20:57It sucks that he retires without a ring.
00:20:58And, and, you know, we'll always have those question marks and everything,
00:21:02but like in the Ravens for that too.
00:21:04Cause you almost could have had one then too.
00:21:07It was a yard away.
00:21:09Yeah.
00:21:10Yeah.
00:21:10And that's, so it's those types of things where you look at it and just say, man,
00:21:14like there are so many interesting parallels and interesting ways, um, that
00:21:21it goes, and I just think to me, like, it's just, it's a really interesting,
00:21:26um, you know, landmark, I think for him where it's like, man, he was just so good.
00:21:33He was so good in the 23 touchdown season.
00:21:36I mean, it's just outrageous.
00:21:37And I, you know, I can remember back to, cause now you got to remember now I was,
00:21:42you know, 23 in 2007.
00:21:44So like, I remember it and I remember watching him and we were talking about
00:21:49that first game against the jets and we hadn't really seen Randy and he wasn't
00:21:53really great the last year in Oakland.
00:21:56And it was kind of like, ugh, you know, I feel great about this guy.
00:22:01And that first, I think the first pass that Brady threw in the year, he just
00:22:06threw a bomb and Moss had started out on the right side, the right outside and
00:22:13just ran, just ran all the way across the field and just, and that was it.
00:22:21And it just ran by everyone.
00:22:22And it looked like he was jogging the whole time.
00:22:25And he just like, just ran by every single guy and caught the ball and
00:22:29walked into the end zone at the other pile on.
00:22:31And I was like, Oh God, this is going to be so much fun.
00:22:35And it was, no, I was actually, I was rewatching that game the other day
00:22:38cause I wanted to experience it again.
00:22:40And it's funny cause he did catch passes before then.
00:22:42And they're all like underneath.
00:22:43I think there was one, he took for like 20 yards at one point, but
00:22:46it's very much like a, a slow burn.
00:22:48Like I think he gets like, maybe I don't think he gets a catch on the first drive.
00:22:52I think he gets like one on the second drive.
00:22:53It's a drive later where he gets like two or three catches in it.
00:22:56And it's like, okay, I'm starting to see how this looks.
00:22:59And then they bring that one out.
00:23:01I think he had talked about how he and Brady just kind of had like a, not a
00:23:05signal on it, but they kind of knew he was going to be open and it was just
00:23:08going to be like, if the defense is this, I'm going to go straight.
00:23:11They do this.
00:23:11I'm just going to go all the way across the field, even given that he
00:23:15goes all the way across the field.
00:23:16Yeah.
00:23:17And it was just like, there was no stopping it.
00:23:20And I think, you know, that's amazing.
00:23:22But some of the later ones like touchdown, he had against the Bengals, the one
00:23:26he had against Washington, a couple of jump ball ones were incredible.
00:23:31Obviously the 23rd against the giants is fantastic.
00:23:35Just the, my, the two Miami ones, just outrageous.
00:23:38The one where he caught it with his bicep.
00:23:40I mean, it's just, you know,
00:23:42well, and that's that 0-7 team is like, yeah, that, well, that last Sunday
00:23:46sucked, but the other 18 Sundays with a couple of Saturdays and Mondays,
00:23:51I think mixed in there.
00:23:53Yeah.
00:23:54Incredible.
00:23:54Pure spectacle.
00:23:56You didn't want to miss a minute of it.
00:23:59Like I was, I was in fourth grade at the time.
00:24:01So I'm, I'm a kid then.
00:24:03And it was funny for me.
00:24:05Cause like, I grew up watching the pads from super bowls, but also the
00:24:08first super bowl that I can actually remember watching in any way is super
00:24:12bowl 39, like 38 and 36 are ones that I'm like, I know I watched, but my
00:24:17memories of them are mostly, you know, DVDs and highlights and things like that.
00:24:22And it was seven.
00:24:23That was the kind of, Oh man, like this is, I'm finally old enough to
00:24:27appreciate, start to appreciate what's actually going on out here.
00:24:31And it felt, it felt unstoppable the whole, the whole way.
00:24:35And obviously, unfortunately it wasn't, but it really did feel that way.
00:24:40That's what it is.
00:24:40That's what those things are.
00:24:41Obviously the championships are fantastic, but as a fan, uh, sometimes
00:24:44you got to stop and smell the roses a little bit along the way too.
00:24:47And that journey was fantastic.
00:24:48Yeah.
00:24:49Yeah, it was.
00:24:49And that's, you know, and so.
00:24:52As terrible as it was it, you know, Hey, you look, you look back and try to look
00:24:57back with a little bit of fondness if we can.
00:24:59Um, and so anyways, okay.
00:25:02So the Randy Moss moment was incredible and it was kind of unscripted.
00:25:07We didn't know it was coming and then it came and it was awesome.
00:25:12The bill Belichick moment was cathartic.
00:25:17And of course that's the first time we've seen Belichick since, right?
00:25:21He had the press conference obviously.
00:25:23And then when he was in the roast, um, but to see him in that moment
00:25:29and to be able to say, thank you really.
00:25:35Right.
00:25:36And that, you know, that standing ovation lasted damn near three minutes.
00:25:40Um, and it was well-deserved and it could have gone on for another 20
00:25:43minutes if we're being honest.
00:25:44Right.
00:25:45But Bill tried to silence the crowd multiple times and we were, we weren't
00:25:49having it, we just weren't having it.
00:25:51He had to hear it from us.
00:25:53He had to know from us and, you know, and we gave him that last
00:25:57anyway, she goes, he deserves it.
00:25:58And look, there's a lot of people, myself included, that thought it was
00:26:02time to move on for bill Belichick.
00:26:03Okay.
00:26:05And I stand by that take, that doesn't mean he's not the greatest
00:26:09quarter, the greatest coach in the history of the NFL.
00:26:11He might be the greatest coach in all sports.
00:26:13Right.
00:26:14And so like, you know, just because, okay, fine.
00:26:18Maybe it was time for us to move on.
00:26:20Like, hello, he's still the best ever.
00:26:23And so of course we're going to love and appreciate him no matter what.
00:26:26And that's one of those things where people are like, well, you're all hypocrites.
00:26:29And this is like, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:26:30Don't get it twisted here.
00:26:31Like no one's sitting here saying that it wasn't bill Belichick and that bill
00:26:35had nothing to do with it and Tom was as long as there are people saying that
00:26:38obviously, but like anyone with a brain is saying like, you know, he's the
00:26:44greatest coach of all time, but it might've been time to move on.
00:26:47Right.
00:26:48He deserved that ovation.
00:26:49He got it.
00:26:50It was fantastic.
00:26:51It was great.
00:26:52It was great about it.
00:26:53Was that like Tom stood up and was given the ovation.
00:26:55Then Tom sat down and then people were still going and Tom was like, well, okay.
00:26:59He stood back up and started cheering for him again.
00:27:01It was just great.
00:27:01It was, it was really, really awesome.
00:27:04And bill deserved it.
00:27:06And his speech was fantastic.
00:27:09I thought was, was great.
00:27:11Um, and I was impressed by it.
00:27:13Not that I'm, you know, not that I didn't know that he had to hit him, but
00:27:17for a guy that doesn't love to talk a lot, he really went into a lot of detail
00:27:21and talked about a lot of different things and, uh, and spoke from the heart.
00:27:24I thought, and, and I, it was, it was great and it was great to see him there.
00:27:27And it was kind of great to see him back on stage.
00:27:30Didn't mention Gerard Mayo.
00:27:31I think that was intentional.
00:27:33And, and look, it might've been personal maybe, but to me, I think if he mentions
00:27:40Gerard Mayo in his speech, that becomes more of a story than, than, you know, that
00:27:44detracts from the story because he mentions Gerard Mayo to me, you have to
00:27:49try to make something out of it to say, Oh, we didn't mention Gerard Mayo.
00:27:52What does that mean?
00:27:53Like, no, no, no, no.
00:27:53Don't let's not play that game.
00:27:54It's about Tom Brady.
00:27:55It's not about, you know, the new coach of, of the Patriots.
00:27:58But it's not, he's not talking about craft.
00:27:59He's not talking about Mayo, but that's also, it's a night of celebration.
00:28:04You know, this isn't the time to nitpick that stuff.
00:28:06If things come up later that are relevant and yeah, we can circle back to this, but
00:28:10it's not, not worth talking about.
00:28:11I thought his speech was fantastic.
00:28:13I loved your loved hearing the stories, the pebble beach one.
00:28:16I think he sold that one before, but so funny and very characteristic
00:28:23of who Belichick and Brady both were.
00:28:26I would love to know what they were saying to each other on stage when they
00:28:30were both up there just talking to one another, because they were, they had of
00:28:35anybody that came up to talk to Brady, they had the longest kind of one-on-one
00:28:39exchange both before and after the speech.
00:28:42Um, I was like, man, we need to get, we need to get some lip readers in here to
00:28:46figure out what's being said.
00:28:49Um, but yeah, no, they were, that was fantastic.
00:28:53Love to hear him speak.
00:28:54I could listen to Bill talk about football and the Patriots and Tom Brady for.
00:28:58Hours on end.
00:29:00Uh, I do want to go back just a tiny bit on that.
00:29:03By the way, he's on his crusade about Rodney Harrison and I couldn't love it
00:29:07more.
00:29:07He is like going to bitch about it until Rodney Harrison's in the hall of fame
00:29:12and like, and I love it so much because Rodney deserves to be in there.
00:29:16He's a top five safety of all time.
00:29:18Deserves to be in the hall of fame and isn't and Belichick had every single
00:29:22opportunities had a chance to speak publicly.
00:29:23He mentions Rodney Harrison and that we should be in the hall of fame.
00:29:26And I just, it's going to happen at some point.
00:29:28It hasn't happened yet, but like, God damn it.
00:29:31Bill Belichick is not going to give up until it happens.
00:29:33And I I'm very excited about it.
00:29:34And I think he'll be the guy to give the speech in camp.
00:29:37That's what I think.
00:29:39Um, because you know, he's, he's banging the drum.
00:29:43They, they need, yeah, they, they need to put bill on like whoever it is that votes
00:29:47for people going to the hall of fame.
00:29:49Um, they should have him doing all pro votes and, uh, all kinds of stuff like
00:29:55that.
00:29:55Cause he has an incredible eye for the game.
00:29:57Uh, but I love that he's banging that drum for Rodney.
00:30:00Um, I wonder if you said you wanted to go Rodney.
00:30:02Oh, go ahead.
00:30:04I wonder if once he's done banging the drum for Rodney, when Rodney gets in, if
00:30:07he's going to turn his attention elsewhere, the name that immediately comes to my
00:30:11mind is Matthew Slater.
00:30:12If he's going to start banging that drum.
00:30:14Uh, so yeah, we'll see.
00:30:16I did want to go back for a second to the people who introduced Bill Belichick.
00:30:21Cause, uh, first of all, just as a broad strokes thing, having a lot of the players
00:30:26involved to do some of the segue things was a lot of fun and they seemed to all
00:30:31enjoy it a lot and they were all hamming it up.
00:30:33Which I loved and I thought was a great way to include them, but, um, it was hard
00:30:39to see Dion and Troy up there without David Patton that, um, that stood out to
00:30:47me as somebody who, uh, you know, really should have been up there, uh, RP David
00:30:52Patton, cause he would have been perfect for something like that and was
00:30:55instrumental in so many of those runs.
00:30:58One of those voices I wish we heard.
00:31:00And I think it, it, it's crazy.
00:31:04Tom Brady was in the league for so long.
00:31:06Like David Patton isn't his only former teammate who has, who has passed on.
00:31:11Like there are others as a result of just life happening and Brady's career
00:31:15going so long that things happen.
00:31:19Um, so, I mean, there were, there were others who also could have been
00:31:22there, um, in celebration too.
00:31:25So yeah, I just wanted to give Patton and all the other former
00:31:30Patriots a shout out there.
00:31:32Yeah, no, it's a great call.
00:31:33And that's, you know, of course, right.
00:31:36And, and, you know, Terry Glenn is one of those who's passed on since.
00:31:39Um, and so it's crazy to think about, you know, and of course, uh, Patton
00:31:44obviously played with Brady a lot longer than, than Terry Glenn did, but you know,
00:31:47it's, uh, yeah, it's sad to see.
00:31:49And it's, you know, it's nice to, to kind of have those memories and you're right.
00:31:53Like to not have him up there was, uh, you know, it was something
00:31:56that as you're sitting there and, and I'll tell you, it was, it was almost
00:32:01as cool for me sitting next to my dad.
00:32:03And we're like, Ooh, there's James Devlin.
00:32:05Oh, there's LeGarrette Blunt.
00:32:07Oh, there's Stephon Gilmore.
00:32:08Oh, there's, you know, Matthew Drew.
00:32:09Oh, there's this guy.
00:32:11It was cool to see all those guys back.
00:32:13Right.
00:32:14And you know, that was a really fun part of it.
00:32:18I thought, um, a ton of guys, like, I think, I think it was reported
00:32:22that over a hundred guys were there.
00:32:24Was, um, was David Givens there?
00:32:28I don't think I, I don't, I don't believe that he was, I don't believe he was.
00:32:33Cause that's, he, that's a name that, yeah, he was a Patriots playoff legend.
00:32:38The guy, he caught a touchdown pass and seven straight playoff games,
00:32:42eight straight playoff games, something like that from 03 to 05.
00:32:46Um, totally, you know, just faded into obscurity after that.
00:32:52I don't know what he's up to.
00:32:53I don't know if he was there.
00:32:54He's another guy would have loved to see, you know, in an ideal world, that
00:32:57group of receivers who's up there introducing Bill at the end is going to
00:33:01include Troy Dion, David Patton, David Givens, throw Bethel Johnson in there
00:33:06too, for some of his contributions to the team.
00:33:08Um, so yeah, but they were, they were doing the, what do you call it?
00:33:14They were only doing two players at the time anyway.
00:33:16Yeah, no, it was cool.
00:33:17And I just thought it was, I thought it was extremely well done.
00:33:20Um, with all those guys there.
00:33:23And I thought it was, it was really cool.
00:33:24And of course, you know, they retired Brady's number, which like, obviously
00:33:29they announced they're commissioning a statue, which I think is great.
00:33:32And I kinda, I had said that was going to happen as well.
00:33:35I think everyone kind of predicted that was going to happen.
00:33:3612 foot statue, of course, 12.
00:33:39Right.
00:33:39Um, but it's pretty cool that it's going to be, you know, out there in the
00:33:42plaza, um, for everyone to kind of see, I wouldn't be surprised if at some
00:33:47point in the future, there's a bill Belichick statue somewhere near that as
00:33:51well, uh, similar to where it is, um, in green bay where they have, they
00:33:57have Lombardi and they also have, uh, I think they have curly Lambo.
00:34:01I maybe that's, maybe I'm wrong about that.
00:34:03I, they have another guy as well.
00:34:04Maybe it's Hornig.
00:34:05I don't remember who the other guy is.
00:34:07Yeah.
00:34:07They need a, they need a Belichick statue to go next to next to that.
00:34:12And I wish, I wish that was something they could have announced last night,
00:34:14honestly, but I do get why they're not going to.
00:34:17Yeah, not yet.
00:34:18You wait until you're going to wait until he's officially
00:34:20retired, until he's done coaching.
00:34:22And then you can do that.
00:34:24Um, and so, um, maybe it was BART star with that.
00:34:28I, you know what?
00:34:29I honestly don't know.
00:34:30I, I was there last year or no, two years ago.
00:34:32I, I don't remember who the second guy was, but either way, um, there'll
00:34:37be a village at Belichick statue.
00:34:38You would think at least the other guy I wanted to give a
00:34:41shout out to was Peyton Manning.
00:34:43Peyton Manning got a standing ovation when he came out.
00:34:46Um, and he's just, he's such a professional, right?
00:34:55He's a guy that he just is so gregarious.
00:34:59It's hard not to like Peyton Manning.
00:35:01Like, of course we didn't like him when we were playing against him and, you
00:35:05know, people will still bring up the HGH stuff and all those other things and
00:35:07whatnot, but like, it's hard not to like him.
00:35:11He's comes across a very likable guy.
00:35:15And the thought that I had sitting in the stands and I, and it's funny, I didn't
00:35:19tweet it out and I think, I think Alex Barth, I think it was Alex Barth tweeted
00:35:22it out last night or this morning.
00:35:24I'm sorry.
00:35:26Was they remind, and my dad had said this as well, so I'll give him credit
00:35:29cause I know he's watching too, um, that reminds you a lot of Magic and Bird.
00:35:36How they were rivals and they were constantly, they were both at the top of
00:35:40their game and they played against each other and their teams didn't like each
00:35:46other, but they were friends off the field.
00:35:48And they, and I think that they, that they were that way, pretty
00:35:52much their whole career.
00:35:54And you know, it's, it's rare to see guys have as good of a
00:35:59relationship as him and Manning have.
00:36:01And so I thought that that was really cool.
00:36:03Uh, him coming out and, you know, and talking and talking the way he did
00:36:07for quite a while with, with, uh, with Tom.
00:36:10Oh, I like the mutual respect there.
00:36:12I would love to learn more about their what?
00:36:15Oh, eight.
00:36:15Oh, nine adventure.
00:36:17It's a high school wide receivers in middle of nowhere, Tennessee.
00:36:20Um, we need a follow-up story on where these receivers are now.
00:36:25I, some journalists, please dig into this, get their names,
00:36:29find out what happened to them.
00:36:31We get the full story now that we're, we're far enough removed that I
00:36:34think we can get details on that one.
00:36:36Um, but yeah, I'd love that he came for it and, um, was a good
00:36:40sport about the whole thing.
00:36:41You know, I, nobody would blame Peyton Manning for saying I'm never
00:36:44going to Gillette stadium ever again.
00:36:46Yeah.
00:36:47That'd be completely fine.
00:36:48And just to show up, I think, uh, there's a ton of respect to him.
00:36:51And I love all the former players who were given Tom, the shout out,
00:36:58people who beat him, people who lost him, lost to him, all those, those
00:37:01big rivals and Jason Taylor being in that.
00:37:06Um, shout out to them for doing it.
00:37:08Shout out to the Patriots for putting that together.
00:37:10Genius move because there is nothing 60,000 Boston fans love doing
00:37:14more than doing Eli Manning like that.
00:37:17It's been 17 years and we're like, that is still something.
00:37:24Yeah.
00:37:24Like put, put A-Rod up there, put Eli Manning up there.
00:37:28So those are two of the top five.
00:37:32Yeah.
00:37:33But it's, I think it's like Eli and A-Rod, those, you put up a picture of
00:37:38either one of those people at any Boston sporting event, you're going
00:37:43to get incredible amounts of booze.
00:37:45Um, getting them both was really funny, but, um, great finger on the
00:37:49pulse of what the fans want there.
00:37:52Oh, and Charles Woodson, you know, it was great with Charles
00:37:54Woodson where, you know, of course he's a Michigan guy and played
00:37:58with them and so on and so forth.
00:37:59And it was, that was really cool.
00:38:01And then for him to say, you know, wasn't a damn fumble and take
00:38:04it and take a sip of the wine was great.
00:38:05Like that's, you know, a perfect way to end it.
00:38:07And, um, you know,
00:38:08when you put out the wine, I thought that was going to be true
00:38:10bloodsuckers wine for a second.
00:38:12I thought it was about to be a joke.
00:38:14I know.
00:38:14Yeah.
00:38:15A little, little drew a little drew shout out, but you know, and, and
00:38:19Drew's, he's another guy, man.
00:38:21That's so gregarious and outgoing and so incredibly well-spoken.
00:38:26That's a guy that could easily be in media if he wanted to be.
00:38:28He doesn't need to be because he makes enough money selling wine.
00:38:31And probably doesn't need to be in the limelight, but he's a guy that, that
00:38:34certainly could be if he wanted to be.
00:38:37Um, I think so.
00:38:40So anyways, um, I thought that that was, that, that stuff was
00:38:43all pretty interesting to me.
00:38:44So, um, you know, just a great night, an awesome night, uh, incredibly
00:38:50well done by the crafts, um, you know, and just seeing it and being a part
00:38:56of it, I think was so cool.
00:38:57Like just being there and seeing it all.
00:39:00Um, I really, I really, really enjoyed it.
00:39:03And again, to me, that's what I was saying to someone before the game,
00:39:05because we tailgated in some before, before the event, we tailgated and stuff.
00:39:08And I was like, this is, this is the whole reason, like if you're a season
00:39:12ticket holder, this is what you're doing, right?
00:39:15This is, this is the whole point, right?
00:39:17Like, what are you doing if you're not here?
00:39:19Right.
00:39:19So, uh, and that asked for that, as if there was food there,
00:39:23there was just a regular food.
00:39:25We were just in the stands.
00:39:26I think if you were sitting down below, um, maybe there was food for you, but,
00:39:31uh, but we were not on the stage or we were not on the floor.
00:39:34We were, uh, we were not invited as a guest by the crafts, which was
00:39:38just kind of shocking.
00:39:39It was a big, a big shock.
00:39:41So yes.
00:39:43Uh, two, two more things.
00:39:44So Jane's pointed out Edelman cussing, which was hysterical.
00:39:47Um, and then Brady saying, you know, he paid him $10,000 to mention
00:39:52him by name, which was hysterical.
00:39:54And then Edelman falling up with a tweet saying I would have paid him
00:39:5720 grand dimension games, games with names, which is incredible.
00:40:02Uh, and then by the way, the last episode of Matt light is, is, oh, I
00:40:07gotta, I gotta, I gotta watch that one.
00:40:09Um, and then lastly, for me, what I thought was really cool, and there
00:40:14were a good amount of current Patriots that were there, every single Patriots
00:40:21rookie was there and not only were they there, they were wearing their
00:40:26Jersey, which I thought was, I thought was pretty cool, but I thought it was
00:40:31pretty cool.
00:40:32They were all there.
00:40:33They stayed for the whole thing.
00:40:34It's like, Hey, this is how it was done.
00:40:38This is what happened, right?
00:40:40Learn something, right?
00:40:42See what he did, see what they did and try to emulate those things
00:40:47that these guys did for so long.
00:40:49And I, I just thought it, I thought it was great.
00:40:51And, you know, in some of his, in Brady's speech, he talked about how hard football
00:40:55is and how that really builds character.
00:40:57And he'd do it because it's difficult, not because it's easy, but because it's
00:41:01hard, um, and that stuff I thought was, was great.
00:41:05And so that was, those are the things that I love to see.
00:41:07And these guys are sitting there doing that.
00:41:09And I thought it was great.
00:41:11And, you know, just good old fashioned indoctrination.
00:41:14Yep.
00:41:15Yep, exactly.
00:41:17If I first thought after that was no pressure, Drake.
00:41:20Yeah.
00:41:20Right.
00:41:22Oh my Lord.
00:41:23Yeah.
00:41:24And we're, it's funny cause you know, you're, these are the
00:41:26shoes you're still trying to fill.
00:41:27This is the job is to somehow live up to that standard, which
00:41:31no one ever will, but it's the goal.
00:41:33Um, and it's, you know, a phenomenal.
00:41:35Experience for Drake made it get to see Brady talk about all of that stuff
00:41:42and experience that experience, what that stadium can be like the first
00:41:46time those rookies have been at Gillette stadium with a crowd to experience
00:41:50what Boston fans are like, like they'll get a little taste of training camp.
00:41:54And then obviously in the season, but this is their first real experience
00:41:57with that, which is great for them.
00:42:00Um, and yeah, I think, I think I even saw some of the, I think the
00:42:03undrafted free agents were there too.
00:42:04I guess I Charles Turner was there, the undrafted center.
00:42:08So, um, yeah, just.
00:42:12Incredible opportunity for them just soak in some of that stuff and
00:42:15hopefully a little bit of that greatness rubs off on this, uh, on this next group.
00:42:20I think I literally, I think the only thing I was possibly disappointed
00:42:23in was that when they did that group of receivers up on stage,
00:42:27I wish Dion was up there too.
00:42:29So they could have gotten really from him or Troy, somebody who
00:42:34was there from the beginning.
00:42:35So they could have overlapped the entire era instead of starting with.
00:42:39It was seven and on, I think I wish they could have gotten some of those
00:42:42early years too, but I get it.
00:42:43There's only so many, so much room up there.
00:42:45Only so many microphones when that's, and that's hard, right?
00:42:49It's, it's just difficult to include everyone, right?
00:42:51Because you have to include Gronk.
00:42:53You have to include Jules.
00:42:58There were the top four for touchdowns.
00:43:00And I think that was kind of the, that was kind of the thought process.
00:43:03I wouldn't have minded having Dion or Troy up there over Wes, but then again,
00:43:10they had Dion and Troy up on the center stage as opposed to that stage.
00:43:13So, um, yeah, they were involved, but I liked, I think, I think it was a good
00:43:18event for West to somebody who has.
00:43:21But it heads, we'll say within England Patriots since leaving.
00:43:26Um, he's, he's, he's the guy where he turned down being at this event.
00:43:31I don't think anybody would have been super shocked by it.
00:43:36Um, given the way some things have gone, but that he's willing to come back, I
00:43:40think says a lot, you know, Matt Patricia was there.
00:43:43That's a guy who, with how things have gone has every reason to not show up.
00:43:48And he came, um, I think says a lot about the respect that they have for, for Brady
00:43:54and for the organization, um, you know, for all the, so we'll say issues, the
00:43:59drama around the crafts really do protect their own.
00:44:03Like if you are a Patriot, you are a Patriot and you are part of the family.
00:44:07And I don't, I don't know how many teams could have done something like
00:44:11what we saw at Gillette last night.
00:44:13Yeah, I agree with you.
00:44:14I agree with you.
00:44:15So we got to get into ad break, but before we do, I just think, you know, just
00:44:19to kind of put a bow on this, you know, there were so many good years.
00:44:25There were so many great years, right.
00:44:27And you talk about, you know, Bell Brady was here, was the starting quarterback
00:44:31for 18 years and made it to nine Superbowls one, you know, made it to what
00:44:37did they say?
00:44:3813, the 13 AFC Jamboree games won the division 17 out of 18 years
00:44:44as a starting quarterback.
00:44:46Um, just man, like in the one year they didn't win the division, it was a tie
00:44:52breaker that they lost on.
00:44:54It's not like they've finished with the same record as the division winner.
00:44:57When Tom Brady was a starting quarterback with Tom Brady as a starting quarterback,
00:45:02they never fit.
00:45:04As a matter of fact, even when Castle was a starting quarterback for that
00:45:07matter, from the year 2001 until the year 2019, they never finished below.
00:45:16They finished with the best record in the AFC East, maybe the best record in
00:45:21the AFC East, but they finished with the best record in the AFC East, which is
00:45:23insane to think about, um, that, that type of run that they went on.
00:45:28So, you know, a ton of great times, but it was, it was great.
00:45:32It was, it was really nice to relive all that.
00:45:34And I'm hoping in some ways that game is a nice past the torch
00:45:39moment to the next iteration.
00:45:42I think in some ways we, we felt like the Brady, uh, return game against
00:45:47the Bucs might be that moment.
00:45:49It wasn't, uh, this is a nice ceremonial passing off.
00:45:53Hey, you never know.
00:45:54You never know.
00:45:55So, yeah.
00:45:56Uh, I want him to read my ad here.
00:45:58Yeah.
00:45:58Let's do your ad and then, and then we'll get into, uh, some minicamp stuff.
00:46:01Yeah.

00:47:02There you go.
00:47:02Love it.
00:47:03Love it.
00:47:04Um, now let's get into some minicamp stuff.
00:47:06And, and here's the thing with, we talked about this Brady stuff, right?
00:47:12And of course our Brady was great leader and how he was unafraid to
00:47:15call guys out for making mistakes.
00:47:19And you starting to see a little bit of that with Drake may nothing, not
00:47:24yelling at guys, not belittling guys, but you know, KJ Osborne tells a story.
00:47:29I feel like we've talked about this on here before, but KJ Osborne, Osborne
00:47:32tells a story about how in, in a route that he ran with to Cobra set at
00:47:38quarterback may may came over to him and said, Hey, you know, I think he really
00:47:43could have run this road a little bit better.
00:47:44It was fine, but you could have run a little bit better and
00:47:47they had already talked about it.
00:47:49And so he, but he was like, Hey, it's like, I appreciate you
00:47:52coming and talk to me about that.
00:47:53Those are the types of things that you don't see, right.
00:47:58That oftentimes you don't hear that leaders and winners do.
00:48:02Right.
00:48:03And I think that that's one of those things where it gives you a little bit of
00:48:07an excitement for what you see from Drake may.
00:48:10And of course we've seen his, we've seen his ability on the field and we've
00:48:14seen a little bit of what he can do.
00:48:18And I think, you know, and as we start and we'll get into it, of course,
00:48:21but the mentality that he has off the field and the way that he interacts
00:48:27with his teammates, I think that makes a huge difference, a huge difference.
00:48:32And again, I think that, you know, that Matt Jones had that to a certain
00:48:37extent, obviously not enough of it.
00:48:40Right.
00:48:40And so we'll see if Drake may has enough of it, um, and can
00:48:44put the work and the time in.
00:48:45And I think his ability, of course, is significantly higher than the Mac
00:48:48Jones's ability was whether he ever realizes that ceiling or not is a
00:48:52question, but then that, that comes down to it and look, Tom Brady said
00:48:56last night, you know, he said, he was like, look, I was incredibly lucky.
00:49:01I walked into a, to a, um, to a quarterback room with drew blood.
00:49:06So, and I had a really, a ton of really good coaches with Charlie Weiss and,
00:49:11and a lot of other offensive assistants that were there, they were great coaches.
00:49:16And I got to learn and get developed by those guys.
00:49:18And he said, you know, guys will ask me, who do you think is the
00:49:20best young quarterback going to be?
00:49:22And he said, I don't know.
00:49:23Tell me where they're going and who's developing them.
00:49:27And that to me, you know, you say, okay, I feel a lot better.
00:49:33I feel a lot better about where the Patriots are right now than where
00:49:38they were three years ago when they drafted Matt Jones, right?
00:49:41They have a good veteran quarterback that is okay.
00:49:44Being a backup if he has to be, but I think as a good leader and a good
00:49:47guy to follow and to go professional guy, AVP, I think is a very good
00:49:55offensive coordinator is a smart guy.
00:49:56He of course played quarterback in the NFL and TC McCartney from everything
00:50:01I've heard, you know, seems to be a solid quarterback coach as well.
00:50:04So of course the jury's out on him still.
00:50:06I mean, who knows?
00:50:07But, um, you got Ben McAdoo and they have McAdoo as well.
00:50:11And so, and those are the things where I feel like they're set up for him to
00:50:15learn and develop and understand what's going on and they're not rushing him
00:50:19into a situation where he has to play.
00:50:21Um, and they weren't necessarily doing that with Matt Jones either.
00:50:24He just, he beat Cam Newton out, but to have a guy like Percet in his corner,
00:50:29where if he beats out Percet, Percet's not getting cut, he's
00:50:32staying on the team as a backup.
00:50:34Um, and I think that that's really important.
00:50:35And so those words by Brady kind of resonated with me last night where I
00:50:40said, you know what, I feel, I feel a lot more comfortable with the situation
00:50:44that Drake Mays in right now than, than Matt Jones was a few years ago.
00:50:48When you're talking about comfortable in the situation from an exes
00:50:52perspective, a lot of that is having receivers.
00:50:54They can make plays for you.
00:50:56And you look at minicamp, the last play of minicamp is Jalen Polk with one second
00:51:02left on a two minute drive, catching up a leaping diving touchdown, the back
00:51:08pylon from Drake May, um, which is what we've been looking for.
00:51:13And I think Polk has been a little bit slow to come on at points in this.
00:51:17Um, he's not like, he's not a guy who's going to wow you before the pads come on.
00:51:22I don't think anyway, but it sounds like he has been a monster in the red zone.
00:51:27And I was listening to, uh, I believe it was as Bucky Brooks and Daniel
00:51:33Jeremiah, um, their podcast, I think that's who it is.
00:51:37And they were doing an exercise, um, this week talking about the most
00:51:43consistent players at each position of all time.
00:51:46So we're talking about guys with, with like eight consecutive thousand
00:51:50yard seasons as receivers, eight consecutive 80 reception seasons
00:51:55as receivers, things like that.
00:51:57Right.
00:51:57In the one common trait, all the guys that was what we're talking about.
00:52:01It's not speed.
00:52:03It's not quickness.
00:52:04It's not height.
00:52:05It's hands.
00:52:06They all had excellent, excellent hands.
00:52:10A guy, actually a guy who right now, um, is, has the opportunity to tie
00:52:16Jerry rice for most consecutive 1000 yard seasons, Mike Evans.
00:52:21He's not the fastest though.
00:52:22He's fast.
00:52:23He's not the quickest.
00:52:24Is it a good route runner?
00:52:26He gets open and catch the ball, especially that big frame, which helps him.
00:52:30And I then translate that to a guy like Jalen Polk.
00:52:34And he's a guy who's a good enough athlete to play wide receiver
00:52:36at a high level in the NFL.
00:52:38Still needs work on his route running.
00:52:40Still needs detail work all over his game.
00:52:43I think what you would expect, but he catches the ball.
00:52:46And I think when you're talking about a young receiver, the only way to get
00:52:50better is to be on the field, to develop and learn and grow in one way to make
00:52:55sure you are actually on the field to get those reps is if you catch it,
00:52:58when they throw you the ball, like if you're not open, but you still do make
00:53:02plays, that means they're going to keep putting you out there, which gives you
00:53:05more opportunities to work on your game, more reps with the starters in practice
00:53:09to fine tune everything and then maximize that opportunity and by that
00:53:15Polk is already, you know, we're not hearing you at him creating crazy
00:53:18amounts of separation, but they're in the red zone and he's catching
00:53:20touchdowns in minicamp and it's like, all right, that is how you earn the
00:53:24trust of a young quarterback and put yourself in position to be developed.
00:53:28And I love, love, love to hear that.
00:53:30Absolutely.
00:53:31And you know, it seems as though him and may are inseparable, right?
00:53:33They were sitting together for, for the majority of the night last night.
00:53:37Um, you know, and that, that's kind of, that's what you need, right?
00:53:43That's what you need to do, right?
00:53:44Cooper cup was a Cooper cup of Matthew Stafford, but like have breakfast every
00:53:47morning, right before Cooper cuffs huge year.
00:53:49And so I think that those are, those are kind of those interesting things
00:53:54where you look at it and say like, Hey, you know, this is, this is
00:53:56kind of where we're at, right.
00:53:58And, um, you know, we'll see where poke goes and how good he can be.
00:54:06Um, but I do think I, I totally agree with you that having that reliability
00:54:10of just catching the damn ball in your other, another guy that, that has
00:54:15really flashed in this minicamp was Cajun booty, and I think may have
00:54:18thrown like four straight touchdown passes to booty or whatever.
00:54:21Well, last year he got his opportunity week one because of a few injuries
00:54:25and multiple times couldn't get his feet down or what didn't run the right.
00:54:29Didn't run quite the right route and kind of just wasn't able to complete
00:54:33the plays they needed to make.
00:54:36And he gets buried on the depth chart.
00:54:37As other guys come in and out and it doesn't really separate himself.
00:54:41If he makes those catches, there's a chance that he sticks around.
00:54:44Right.
00:54:45And so, um, you know, you have to take advantage of the opportunities
00:54:49when you're a young player, you have to take advantage of the opportunities that
00:54:53he didn't.
00:54:53And maybe Paul can, once he gets it.
00:54:57Yeah.
00:54:57And being on the field is huge.
00:55:00Yes.
00:55:00He was not on the field of minicamp on Wednesday, Taekwon thorn.
00:55:05Yeah.
00:55:05We don't know why he wasn't there.
00:55:07Presumably injured.
00:55:09Um, Javon Baker, you know, he's, he's out there, but he's rehabbing
00:55:13something he and Marcella's dial.
00:55:15Neither one is involved.
00:55:16Um, which is like, it's early.
00:55:18So I'm not too worried about those guys, but you gotta be on the field to be
00:55:21developed in case on booty is a guy where it's like, all right, if he can give you
00:55:25anything, um, that a sixth wide receiver spot, even the fifth wide receiver spot.
00:55:31Wide open right now.
00:55:33Uh, right.
00:55:33If booty can turn into something, I think that would be awesome.
00:55:38Think there's a chance that if he turned into something and it's up on the 53 man
00:55:41roster, he may be suspended and not on the 53 man roster, but that's a bridge
00:55:46that we cross when we get there.
00:55:48Um, if he's an asset for you, if he matures, if he can do it, cause all of his
00:55:53issues are still going back to college.
00:55:54This isn't new things he was doing in the NFL.
00:55:57So, um, if he can give you anything that is a plus from what you expected from him
00:56:04after what you got his rookie year.
00:56:07And yeah, I'm excited to see these guys start to play with pens.
00:56:10You know, obviously it's great to see them produce.
00:56:13You're also seeing their names next to like a ZZ, her own.
00:56:16And, um, uh, the names escaping you, Mikey, uh, what's his last name?
00:56:21Mikey, Mikey, big, big body corner they brought in and it's like, all right,
00:56:26these are undrafted guys and they are supposed to be better than them, but
00:56:30they're making plays, which is what you would like.
00:56:32Um, and yeah, and the other guy who's been flashing his name, I just keep
00:56:37seeing his team bell, which I'm not shocked at.
00:56:40I don't, I still don't understand how he fell to the seventh round.
00:56:43Uh, it's a really good athlete can be used in a ton of ways.
00:56:47Good with the ball in space can stretch defenses with his speed from the slot.
00:56:52Um, I wouldn't be shocked if he's tied into week one.
00:56:56I'm not as I was never as high on Austin Hooper as others were anyway.
00:56:59Yeah.
00:57:00I can't feel the same way about Hooper.
00:57:02Yeah.
00:57:02Which by the way, can I, can I throw a little stat in here?
00:57:06I don't know if he'd seen me tweet this earlier, but, uh, so I was in the
00:57:11athletics football show today.
00:57:12They had Ali Connelly on who's a British football journalist, a very big numbers
00:57:16guy, and they did a whole AFC East thing, which worth listening to.
00:57:20Um, especially if you want, if you want to hear a more negative perception on
00:57:23where the Patriots are this year, all he brings up a lot of points that I
00:57:27think are, are worth listening to.
00:57:28I don't necessarily agree, but worth listening to a great episode
00:57:31going around the division.
00:57:33They talk about the Patriots last year and how they brought in Mike Kosicki.
00:57:36And the idea was to be a two tight end team.
00:57:39The Patriots were 32nd in the NFL in expected points added.
00:57:45We have out of two tight end personnel.
00:57:48They were minus 75 expected points on the season.
00:57:53The next worst team, the New York jets at minus 27, how much worse they were at
00:58:01the next team at the, this is supposed to be what they were going to major in.
00:58:04This is supposed to be the big part of their offense.
00:58:07They've been trying to do the two tight end thing since the
00:58:08Johnny Smith year in 2021 too.
00:58:10And they haven't gotten it to work out.
00:58:13I don't know if that's going to change this year.
00:58:14I don't know if it's going to be great.
00:58:17You have to improve that number.
00:58:19You got to be better.
00:58:21A hundred percent.
00:58:22Uh, it just, golly.
00:58:25I mean, like that's including like Pharaoh Brown taking that 75 yard
00:58:30touchdown or whatever against the jets.
00:58:33Right.
00:58:33And that's, yeah, man.
00:58:35Those are the types of things that you just can't have.
00:58:38Um, you need more when you get those guys out there and here's, I'll tell you.
00:58:43And, and I, I don't know this for sure, but I would venture to guess that
00:58:52Jean bell and his Florida state teammate, Johnny Wilson, both dropped
00:58:57so significantly because teams didn't know what to do with them.
00:59:03They didn't know, like, what are you?
00:59:06Are you a tight end?
00:59:07Are you a fullback?
00:59:08Are you like, what position do you play?
00:59:11Right.
00:59:11And Johnny Wilson is kind of the same way where it's like, well, yeah,
00:59:15you're like six, eight or six, seven.
00:59:17Great.
00:59:18But like, you're not super fast.
00:59:20So you're like, kind of like a, I mean, you're like, well, I kind of like a wide
00:59:25receiver, but you're kind of like a tight end, but you're not really
00:59:27strong enough to play tight end.
00:59:28It's like, it's like if I were playing Madden, right.
00:59:31Johnny Wilson's a guy I would draft in the sixth round and switch him to tight
00:59:33end, and then I would dominate in the seams because he's just faster than all
00:59:37the linebackers that, that try to cover him.
00:59:39Right.
00:59:39And so, but that's not, that's not how it works in the NFL.
00:59:44Right.
00:59:44And I think
00:59:45the thing with Johnny Wilson too, is that despite his big frame, he doesn't
00:59:49have like great hands either.
00:59:51So he's totally like this unicorn of a player.
00:59:55Yeah.
00:59:55Right.
00:59:56And so, and Wilson may never pan out and Gmail might not pan out either, but,
00:59:59but I think that the reason they dropped is because teams looked at them like,
01:00:04what do we do with this guy?
01:00:06Right.
01:00:06And I think that that's that more than anything is why they ended up where they
01:00:10were.
01:00:11Um, and you know, look, it benefits the Patriots because they were able to get
01:00:14him, you know, late in the draft and the seventh round and you know, and we'll
01:00:18see what happens.
01:00:19I mean, I don't, it doesn't guarantee he's gonna be a great player or anything
01:00:21like that.
01:00:22They're not wearing pads yet, but just the fact that he's out there making plays
01:00:25right now is a good sign for the Patriots.
01:00:27Well, like bell is a guy who didn't really use properly South Carolina.
01:00:32Like, I don't think he's been really used properly since maybe his sophomore year.
01:00:36I don't think South Carolina knew how to use him, which is why he transferred and
01:00:40ended up at a Florida state team that was more defense than offense.
01:00:45And I don't think was super well coached.
01:00:48It's weird because they were a dominant team and didn't lose a game, uh, in the
01:00:52regular season, but also like they, the, you watch like the techniques.
01:00:57So I think they were just better athletes.
01:00:59So most of the teams they played and they just kind of relied on that for a lot of
01:01:02the year.
01:01:02And especially on defense, they could just, you know, mow teams down.
01:01:06Yeah.
01:01:06And you had a lot of mouths.
01:01:07If you don't often see on Coleman, Johnny Wilson, Jaheim bell plus other guys, you
01:01:11know, in the, in the queue there, and you have two unicorns there who are like,
01:01:17like difficult to figure out what to do with, like, in some ways you kind of wish
01:01:22Jaheim bell would be playing the role that like Johnny Wilson's playing a little bit
01:01:25at points and like, you know, the, the negative side, you can look at him and say,
01:01:30well, he's a tight end.
01:01:32You can't a tight end slash fullback.
01:01:34They can't block.
01:01:35Uh, and we just don't have a role for him, but he's really fast and he's a good
01:01:41athlete.
01:01:41So I think in the modern NFL, there's a space for him on a roster.
01:01:45I don't think he's ever your date.
01:01:47I don't think you ever, you're starting tight end.
01:01:48I don't think he's ever a guy who'd be a good enough blocker to do that.
01:01:52But I think he's a guy who can block when schemed into it.
01:01:55And, uh, he's not Debo.
01:01:58He's not like, maybe Kyle use check might be a better example of a guy who's like,
01:02:03just like a good athlete.
01:02:04And like when he's the fourth or fifth best option on the field, he can really, you
01:02:08know, help you out and create some mismatches.
01:02:12Well, and that's, and that's kind of the idea, right.
01:02:13Is that he's never going to be a number one target, but as an ancillary piece, as a
01:02:17guy, that's kind of like a little bit of a gadget guy.
01:02:20I love it.
01:02:21So, um, so we'll see seventh round, right?
01:02:25Right.
01:02:25And so many camps over, um, they don't have anything going on until training
01:02:29camp, um, which of course is about a month away.
01:02:34Uh, they haven't officially announced the dates yet, so we don't know
01:02:36exactly when they're going to be.
01:02:37But usually it's about, it's usually around the 20th or 21st or 22nd,
01:02:43somewhere around there of, um, of, uh, of July.
01:02:48And so we'll see, I think it's probably be that week.
01:02:50So I think 21st is a Sunday.
01:02:53So usually they start on like a Wednesday or a Thursday.
01:02:56So I would think with that, like July 24th, 23rd, 24th, depending on how it
01:03:02is, like they might do, maybe they do start on Monday and they do to
01:03:05unpacket practices and get to the real bosses Wednesday.
01:03:08We'll see.
01:03:09Um, yeah, I can't wait to see the pads come on.
01:03:13I can't wait for preseason.
01:03:14I can't wait for, you know, the joint practices.
01:03:17I got one this year, just one, but I think it'll be telling.
01:03:20And that's where, you know, that we've got a, what looks like a new look
01:03:23offensive line with Caden Wallace is going to be on the right, right tackle.
01:03:26I'm like a winning right guard.
01:03:27I'm guessing that's their best five.
01:03:29And Caden Wallace at right tackle is a guy I do feel comfortable with.
01:03:32It's a starter.
01:03:33I don't think he'll be a high level starter right away, but I think he
01:03:36can think he's better than what Vidarian Lowe gave you.
01:03:38I think he can be, you know, Conor McDermott level starter for you year one.
01:03:41And if a core four can also be a Conor McDermott level starter for you at the
01:03:45other tackle spot, you can have a 25th best offensive line in the NFL,
01:03:50which is a step up from last year.
01:03:52That's very correct.
01:03:53That is very correct.
01:03:54And I think, you know, city zone was left guard.
01:03:57Coles range is out of a job.
01:03:59Seems like, um, seems like that's where we're headed.
01:04:02Um, you know, he's not out there and if he gets healthy, uh, but hopefully,
01:04:07hopefully, you know, the, the, the ideal outcome here is that you get to camp.
01:04:10Coles range is back and he looks like a starter and we can throw
01:04:14months of worrying about this out the window because then city, so it
01:04:18can go back to the right side on when him kicks out the right tackle.
01:04:21Caden Wallace goes back to backup swing tackle or however they want to use him.
01:04:25And you have a, you have your backup configuration set for if strange does go
01:04:29out, um, but yeah, that's brutal injury for strange and the longer we go without
01:04:35updates, the more, yeah, it just doesn't, it doesn't look good.
01:04:40Doesn't work like a, if he's starting the year on the pup, like if he's not
01:04:45going to back until week seven, then you're a backup now.
01:04:50Like that's unless, unless the line is absolutely awful and
01:04:55unplayable without him, he's just going to be a backup when he comes
01:04:58back and he might not, but it'll take a time to like, get up to full strength.
01:05:03Like there's a world where Cole strange is not fully healthy to
01:05:08play football until 2025.
01:05:10Like that's, that's the tough part with stuff like this.
01:05:14Um, and that was something we talked about last year.
01:05:16He was a rookie.
01:05:18He got thrown in with bad coaching.
01:05:19It didn't, he looked good at points, but it was up and down.
01:05:23And then he apparently got hurt during camp last year, was trying
01:05:25to play through it, struggling and then gets hurt and might not
01:05:29really be himself and fully healthy.
01:05:31If he gets no training camp, then he's not going to be fully.
01:05:34His was himself or football ability for the whole season.
01:05:37So you're not going to get a hundred percent close range until 2025.
01:05:41And at that point, his job might be gone and you're shipping him
01:05:44out for a day free pick somewhere.
01:05:45So hopefully it goes another way because he seems like a good dude
01:05:48and he can be an asset.
01:05:50I want him in new England, but that's the way the sport goes stuff.
01:05:54Yeah, it's not great.
01:05:55So let's do, we got one more ad to do.
01:05:57And then, uh, new contract that we have to talk about, um, that
01:06:01will, that we'll get into quickly.
01:06:04And then we'll get you guys out of here.
01:06:05Uh, so price picks is America's number one fantasy sports app with

01:07:05Again, sneaky one right there for you.
01:07:08And then I'm going Kaitlyn Clark with more than three and a half, uh, three
01:07:11pointers made and Brianna Stewart for more than 23 points.

01:07:27your first deposit up to $100 price picks, pick more, pick less.
01:07:35It's that easy.
01:07:38All right.
01:07:39So last, last bit on the agenda, Trevor Lawrence, the number one pick from 2021.
01:07:47Got paid.
01:07:52Wow.
01:07:53A lot of money, a lot, a lot, a lot of money.
01:07:58I honestly don't know if he's worth it yet.
01:08:00I don't, but if you wanted to keep him around, you kind of didn't have a choice.
01:08:06Well, Nate, it's a tough situation.
01:08:08Cause he got, I mean, he's, he's played three years as a starter now.
01:08:13And his first year as a starter, he's got urban Meyer as his head coach.
01:08:18And then last year, you know, just an insane number of drops and errors around
01:08:25him and plays that went the worst possible way and a receiving core that I don't
01:08:31think really fit his strengths anyway, or really fit one another a lot of overlap
01:08:36with all the guys they had.
01:08:37So it was a really weird room.
01:08:39I'm not upset with it.
01:08:40Like this is.
01:08:42So it's $200 million guaranteed, which is fourth among all quarterbacks right now,
01:08:48which sounds crazy, but this is how the quarterback market works.
01:08:52Like he's, he's over Lamar Jackson.
01:08:54Now he's over Jalen hurts.
01:08:56So for Jerry golf, Kyler Murray, Josh Allen, my homes, even Deshaun Watson's
01:09:02still at the top of that leaderboard.
01:09:04Yeah.
01:09:05But when you look at the average value as the percentage of the cap, he's 10th in
01:09:11the NFL is according to spot tracks, boat track spot track.
01:09:14I don't know how you say it.
01:09:16I don't really know.
01:09:16Yeah.
01:09:18It Trevor Lawrence is probably about the 10th best quarterback in the NFL.
01:09:23And when you also add in the fact that other quarterbacks will get paid and that
01:09:27it will slide down that leaderboard.
01:09:30Yep.
01:09:30I think it is probably completely fair market value for him.
01:09:34He's not a bad quarterback.
01:09:36He is somewhere between like the 15th best into the eighth best at this point,
01:09:40depending on how you want to read things and how you want to project him into the
01:09:44future, but he's still young.
01:09:46I think he hasn't played his best football yet.
01:09:48He's at a market value thing.
01:09:52I think this is just something you have to do if you're Jacksonville.
01:09:54Right.
01:09:55And that's, that's what it comes down to.
01:09:56Right.
01:09:57And so, and dad points out, you know, that there are eight QBs making
01:10:01more money than Patrick Mahomes.
01:10:03And he's right about that.
01:10:04It's kind of crazy.
01:10:06They signed him to that massive contract and everyone was like, oh my God, that's
01:10:10an insane amount of money.
01:10:11And it was an insane amount of money.
01:10:14He's making, he counts for under $40 million against the cap this year, which
01:10:19is a little bit of a discount.
01:10:20Now in the next three years, he counts for 66, 68 and $64 million respectively
01:10:29over the next three years against the cap.
01:10:31That's a whole crap ton of money, right?
01:10:33They're definitely going to do some finagling to move that around.
01:10:36You would think they would kind of have to do some finagling, right?
01:10:39But either way, when you look at the contract that he signed, right.
01:10:46A 10 year, $450 million contract.
01:10:50That's an average of $45 million a year.
01:10:52Trevor Lawrence just got paid $10 million more per year than Patrick Mahomes.
01:11:01Yeah, the whole country is still like, it's, it's certainty is kind of what you
01:11:09get out of that if you're both the team and Mahomes and here's the other thing.
01:11:13I'm sure if we get four years from now and quarterback's been paid $65 million a
01:11:19year, if he comes back and says, Hey buddies, can we adjust this a little bit?
01:11:23Can I get a little bit more?
01:11:25I don't think they're going to play hard ball with him too, too much at that.
01:11:27But I think they'll give him what he wants.
01:11:31Yeah, they'll, they'll rip it up and, and, and restructure if they need to.
01:11:34And I believe at a certain point, there's like not really a, any restructure kind
01:11:39of, uh, anything I feel like, um, yeah.
01:11:46So the thing with Mahomes is that because his contract is so long, what they can do
01:11:50is just take future money, give it to him now as part of signing bonus, and then it
01:11:54becomes like prorated.
01:11:56So they over the course of the deal and they can spread it out.
01:12:00So because that deal is still has so much time left on it, they have a couple of
01:12:04years of wiggle room to play around with signing bonuses and kick things down the
01:12:08road if they want to, um, I mean, his contract runs out in 2031.
01:12:13So like they get some time, they get some time to figure it out.
01:12:15So, yeah, by the way, speaking of contracts, well, the other thing we forgot to
01:12:19mention from any camp Devon God draw not participating as seemingly a contract
01:12:25thing that hasn't been said, but Rod Mayo said without saying that it's a contract
01:12:31thing.
01:12:32I'm not sure.
01:12:32I get gone.
01:12:33Shaw's got an 11 and a half, a million dollar cap hit this year, making quite a
01:12:39bit of money for himself.
01:12:40He's a good player, but I want, I wonder what, I wonder if what he's looking for
01:12:44is an extension.
01:12:44I wonder if he's looking for another year tacked onto this, to stay in new England
01:12:48and get some certainty out of it.
01:12:50Which I can, which I can certainly see, right.
01:12:52Matthew.
01:12:52He's a good player.
01:12:54They'll have to take a little bit less money than I think he's getting right now.
01:12:58Um, maybe, maybe not, but like, I think, yeah, you would think, yeah.
01:13:03But I think there's a reminder extension coming up.
01:13:06I have to think they're going to extend to Don.
01:13:08I still think that's gotta be common and I will see what they do with God job, but
01:13:13I would, I, I wonder if they do that.
01:13:15The other possibility that I saw brought up was that he might be concerned.
01:13:18He's going to be a cap casualty in camp.
01:13:20I think it's outplayed by somebody.
01:13:22They're just going to cut him the end of August and he's going to have to go find
01:13:25a new team because he is worth a lot of money.
01:13:28Uh, and I wonder if he's looking for some roster guarantees, some kinds of extra
01:13:32money to have insurance and either something, something to make it harder to
01:13:36cut him or some extra money at front.
01:13:38So if he gets cut, it isn't as big of a deal when he has to go look elsewhere.
01:13:42Which makes sense.
01:13:43Which does, which definitely makes sense.
01:13:44Um, actually matter of fact, as I was walking, so my parents had gotten there
01:13:50early, uh, my wife dropped me off, me and my sister off, um, on route one.
01:13:56And so we were walking down route one and I'm walking by the McDonald's on route
01:14:00one across the street from the stadium.
01:14:02And who's walking up with like a big cardboard box.
01:14:05And he has Matthew Jude on walking the other side.
01:14:07I'm like, I'm like, yeah, sure.
01:14:09It is.
01:14:10I'm like, I don't know what the hell he's doing.
01:14:11Walking route one, but here he was.
01:14:13And I'm like, Matt, my good luck this season.
01:14:16And I said, no, I'm like that contract's coming.
01:14:18It's coming.
01:14:19We're going to get you that extension.
01:14:20So he's like, ah, you don't appreciate it.
01:14:22Or something like that.
01:14:23You know, he didn't really respond, but that way, you know, Hey, thanks.
01:14:27You know, whatever.
01:14:28So, um, he has to get paid you, but you've paid all these other guys.
01:14:34You have to pay Jude on, he's been a good soldier.
01:14:37He's here.
01:14:38He's at mini camp.
01:14:40He's got like the face of the franchise the last few years.
01:14:43And he says all the right things.
01:14:45He wants to be a leader.
01:14:46He's trying to be a leader.
01:14:48To me, it's like, why are you paying all these other guys?
01:14:51If you're not going to pay him?
01:14:52So, um, I hope they do the right thing with him.
01:14:55I think that they will.
01:14:56Um, another guy that I saw that was, that was there last night.
01:14:59And I mentioned his name was to find Gilmore.
01:15:02If you don't love what's going on in camp with your outside corners, might
01:15:08not be a bad guy to give a call to and see if he will be willing to come
01:15:11back on a, on a short money deal.
01:15:13Uh, for, you know, one or two years, I think that that would make a ton of
01:15:16sense if you don't love now, listen, if you feel like, you know, Alex Austin
01:15:21and Isaiah Bolden and those guys have taken a step forward and you feel like
01:15:26right.
01:15:27And they can actually be like contributing players on the outside.
01:15:32Okay.
01:15:32I'm I'm okay with letting the young guys eat.
01:15:34I'm I got no problem with that, but if you're concerned about their
01:15:38progression and you don't think one of those three guys can make an impact
01:15:42on the outside and even Marcus Jones, I'll throw in there, although I think
01:15:44he's a soft corner, I'll even throw in, in him and maybe John Jones is that guy.
01:15:48And we don't have to worry about it.
01:15:50Um, but you know, if you don't see one of those guys be in that kind of third
01:15:55corner, that depth corner, and you're really worried about it, I wouldn't,
01:16:00wouldn't hate to see them throw some money.
01:16:02It's the wrong Gilmore.
01:16:03No, I'd love to know what they think of what they're seeing
01:16:05in practice from those guys.
01:16:07I think that'd be really interesting.
01:16:08Uh, cause it's, uh, Alex Austin showed some stuff last year and as things
01:16:13stand, you'd be asking him to be your fourth corner, which I think is fine.
01:16:16You can totally get by with that.
01:16:18Um, the issue is that all three of the guys ahead of him are guys who have
01:16:24missed time with various injuries.
01:16:27You know, who are the guys that had to have been missed most of
01:16:29last season with the same.
01:16:31Injury, right.
01:16:32Uh, and Jonathan Jones has not been known for his health in his NFL career.
01:16:37Great player, but he's missed time.
01:16:39Uh, so yeah, whoever's fourth, fifth corner, you're going to play in this
01:16:43defense anyway, because guys are going to get rotated, but, um, yeah, the other
01:16:48name, I don't think we've talked about Sean Wade.
01:16:50He said, first of all, he's still around, right?
01:16:53Uh, I think, I don't know.
01:16:57I'm pretty sure he's still, I think he's one of the vets who isn't there.
01:17:00I'm guessing.
01:17:02Yeah.
01:17:02Um, yeah, let's go with it.
01:17:04Oh, it's good to use.
01:17:05I'm checking.
01:17:06I'm checking their roster right now to double check.
01:17:07Yeah.
01:17:08Sean Wade's still around.
01:17:09He was not bad for them when he played last year, he was serviceable and like,
01:17:16all right, if it's, if it's Sean Wade and Alex Austin is your corners four and five
01:17:21and you like what you've seen from Marcus Jones, who isn't there right now.
01:17:24And you obviously Jonathan Jones is a starting caliber corner.
01:17:27Um, all right.
01:17:29I think we got something going and that's your top five.
01:17:32And then can Marco Wilson challenge somebody and give you something.
01:17:36And Isaiah Molden challenged somebody and give you something.
01:17:40Can either of those, any of those undrafted guys, you know, Azizi
01:17:43Hearn, who, whose name has been heard a lot here.
01:17:46Do you have the guy whose name I forgot earlier?
01:17:48And I'm forgetting again right now, who had Joan Polk, I think,
01:17:51beat for a touchdown at one point.
01:17:52The bigger guy, uh, Mikey Victor.
01:17:55Um, yes.
01:17:57Any of those guys, if they can challenge for a spot, you know, this is a defense,
01:18:00a team where you're an undrafted, a free agent, you're going to
01:18:03have chances to make a team.
01:18:04So, um, yeah, I, I'm not opposed bringing Stefan Gilmore, especially
01:18:10as kind of a vet mentor for Gonzalez.
01:18:13I think the two of those guys would go well together.
01:18:16Um, I think if you bring in Stefan Gilmore, that means one of Jonathan
01:18:22Jones to Marcus Jones is a rotational player for you and not going to be
01:18:26Jonathan Jones, though.
01:18:28Um, yeah, I, I, I would like it from a football perspective.
01:18:32I'm not sure.
01:18:33I think Justin Simmons is the one that probably make more football
01:18:36sense for them this year, as long as they like the depth that
01:18:38corner and what they're seeing.
01:18:39Yeah, I agree.
01:18:40I do agree with you.
01:18:41So, you know, we'll see, see how it goes.
01:18:44I also bet, but I bet Gilmore is looking for a contender he can land with too.
01:18:49I would assume that he probably is that, that to me makes the most sense, but
01:18:54that's, I wonder if, I wonder if a place like Philly, although they just drafted
01:18:59two guys for probably any other chunk playing time for them.
01:19:01Um, good point.
01:19:03Team though, it makes sense.
01:19:04Maybe it's Detroit, Terry on Arnold there.
01:19:06Um, and they, they could probably use a little help, but outside
01:19:09corner right now, I don't know.
01:19:11We'll see.
01:19:12That'll be a saga to watch.
01:19:13Uh, I'll be rooting for him.
01:19:14See, see wherever he ends up going.
01:19:16Yeah.
01:19:17Yeah.
01:19:17So that, that says Gilmore to San Fran.
01:19:21I don't think he'd be a fit in what they want to do defensively, to be honest,
01:19:25although I'm not a hundred percent.
01:19:26Sure.
01:19:29Yeah.
01:19:30Yeah.
01:19:31I suppose you're not necessarily wrong.
01:19:32So they might, they might also do, they fired the defensive
01:19:35coordinator for a reason last year.
01:19:36So, but they, they fired him because he wanted to be aggressive
01:19:39and play a lot of man defense.
01:19:41And I think they want to go back to more regular like zones and stuff like that.
01:19:46So I don't know if he's the guy they want for that, which I think
01:19:49would be a silly reason pass on him.
01:19:52I think if you can get a guy like that and make him work, you do it, but yeah.
01:19:58So, all right.
01:20:00Well, I think that's what we've got, man.
01:20:03I think that's all we got.
01:20:05Anything else you want to add before we go?
01:20:08I don't think so.
01:20:10Okay.
01:20:10If the Celtics do win Friday night, you know, enjoy your
01:20:15celebrations and be responsible.
01:20:17Yes.
01:20:18Don't do anything stupid.
01:20:20Yes.
01:20:21Or not yet.
01:20:23So no, it's a, it's all I got, right.
01:20:26I mean, listen, you know, I think that we, man, I think that we it's an exciting time.
01:20:36It's an exciting time for the Celtics.
01:20:38And so we'll see, you know, and I don't know if they're going to win game four,
01:20:42but I kind of just feel like I almost wonder if Dallas is even
01:20:44going to show up for game four.
01:20:45So that almost, I feel like, you know, the Celtics obviously take
01:20:51that huge lead in the third.
01:20:53And I feel like Dallas coming all the way back and then losing anyways is almost
01:20:58more of a gut punch than if they had lost by 25 or 30, you know, you got, you
01:21:03got points from Luca, not a bad Kyrie game.
01:21:09Tate Tatum, who I think played pretty well, but still like not a hyper efficient
01:21:14score, so it's not that Tatum can have a 50 point game.
01:21:18Like I wouldn't be surprised if it happens tomorrow night.
01:21:20Yeah.
01:21:20You didn't have to deal with that and all of that.
01:21:24And you still can't get a win.
01:21:25Um, especially with Luca and him begging to be taken out of the game with fouls.
01:21:31Yeah.
01:21:31Um, just like one of the most deserved foul outs I think I've ever seen.
01:21:36You know, technical in there too, man.
01:21:40He's just, yeah, that's annoying.
01:21:42If you didn't have to be like this when he chooses to be, so you play your game.
01:21:47If you're the Celtics and you should win it.
01:21:51And if you don't, there's no reason to be nervous whatsoever, because I don't
01:21:55have any faith that the Mavs can do this, do enough to win for two games in a row.
01:22:01No, me neither.
01:22:03Me neither.
01:22:04So, uh, if, if that does happen, if the Celtics do lose the next
01:22:08game would be Monday night, correct?
01:22:10Yes.
01:22:11And so if that were the case, obviously we will not have a game on Monday.
01:22:14I will not have a show on Monday.
01:22:16And then, so we'll, we'll figure it out from there.
01:22:19I'm not a hundred percent sure where we're going to go.
01:22:21Um, but we'll let you guys know, we'll probably end up doing it on Tuesday,
01:22:25maybe, um, or another day, who knows?
01:22:29But, uh, we'll give you some fun content next week.
01:22:33We'll let you guys know.
01:22:34Let's put it that way.
01:22:35Yeah.
01:22:35So then we'll go from there.
01:22:37So anyways, thank you for coming through as always people.
01:22:41The chat, uh, was going through going strong.
01:22:43We appreciate you guys as always.
01:22:46Um, and, uh, and we'll see you guys hopefully on Monday night, hopefully
01:22:51on Monday night, go Celtics.
01:22:52And, uh, hopefully they'll close it out Friday night.
01:22:56Take care guys.
01:22:58Thanks for listening.
