00:00 Welcome to Amacis Palagarams, a humble home in SS17 Subang Jaya,
00:05 where the enticing aroma of uppams fill the neighborhood every weekend morning.
00:10 Amacis Palagarams is a nearly 50-year-old family business,
00:14 now run by family members of the third generation.
00:18 Amacis is how I call my grandmother, my Maus Ma.
00:20 And Palagarams means Indian delicacies, right?
00:23 So my grandmother started this in the 70s,
00:26 and she's a part of the family, she's been doing it for many years.
00:30 Then my mom and Mrs. Gurspa had to get it.
00:32 Finally, I was the one in the family who always told my mother to stop doing this.
00:37 However, when Narmada lost her job as a physiotherapist in 2020,
00:42 she discovered the true value of the family business.
00:45 Soon after, her now husband and foodie Aaron J. Dasan
00:49 left his accounting job to carry forward the legacy of Amacis Palagarams.
00:55 In a strategic move to attract more customers to their main products, such as murkus,
01:00 they began serving uppams from Aaron's grandfather's home in February 2023.
01:06 Soon, they discovered that the main attraction was not the murkus,
01:10 but the three-generation-old uppam recipe.
01:13 So one guy left a review saying, "Best uppam in Malaysia."
01:17 We agree, too.
01:19 After one year of introducing these fluffy, sweet treats,
01:23 their menu today carries four variations of the classic Sri Lankan uppam.
01:28 One of their specialties is the original falapam,
01:31 cooked with milk rather than having the milk served separately.
01:35 Their menu also features plain and egg uppam
01:38 with a coconut sambal packed with smoky and spicy flavors.
01:42 Finally, their falapam with jaggery is pure heaven for those with a sweet tooth.
01:48 We get a lot of big families that come.
01:52 All families, 15 of them, will come and just sit down.
01:58 They'll be eating uppams on the stove, having tea,
02:01 having a good time, playing board games.
02:03 I think we feed off that energy also.
02:06 Yeah, the house has life also, I guess.
02:10 While aspiring to expand the business,
02:13 the couple acknowledges the special charm of operating from this cozy house.
02:18 I think we both genuinely like talking.
02:21 It's like interacting.
02:24 Yeah, you learn so many new things, you learn so many new stories.
02:29 And for a short while, you are in somebody else's shoes.
02:34 Narmada and Aaron continue to make memories of their own
02:37 while preserving her family's culinary legacy.
02:42 So, don't forget to drop by Ang Majis Palagarum in SS17, Subang Jaya
02:47 and check out the full article by logging on to FMT and following us here.
